Introduction and Reflections on Blade, Texas

00:00:16
Speaker
Welcome to another Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. I am your host, Dennis Terrell from Terrell Knife Works. And as always, I have my dickhead friend, Jared Sandoval from Echo Blades. And we are back from Blade, Texas.
00:00:30
Speaker
I tell you what. I tell you what. Listen, Bobby.
00:00:39
Speaker
Ugh. We had a blast. It was a great time and we are ready to talk about it. Jared, are we ready? I'm ready.
00:00:51
Speaker
was just fucking all fired up over here. You know, Dennis, One of the beautiful things, one of the many beautiful things that you provide, not only myself, but but our amazing community is just absolute pure energy.
00:01:08
Speaker
And I just want to thank you, dude. Like, I cannot keep up with how much enthusiasm, intensity you have. And it

Travel Tales and Family Time

00:01:16
Speaker
really shows in that great intro. So, guys, hold on. If you if if the first one minute and 22 seconds or any kind of signal of how this is going to go, you guys are in fucking trouble.
00:01:30
Speaker
I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what. he How are you, buddy? Are you rested? Are you back? Are you good? was pretty tired today, actually. I had ah had a little... I actually had to take care of the grandson today because he was sick. So he stayed with me for the day. So I didn't really do much until the afternoon.
00:01:55
Speaker
But I had a little nap, um which was nice. I can't wait for you to follow up this with, the already back to work and doing stuff for Blade Atlanta. I am fired up.
00:02:08
Speaker
Uh, well, yeah, that's, i have a timeline all the way till June of next year now. So, uh, I am geared up for everything. ah Must be tough, dude. I went to work today.
00:02:22
Speaker
so Yeah, that was great. while all the time listening or not listening to but receiving text messages from our wonderful friend mr brent smith from bald man text i mean bald man i can do it texting me and reminding me that he's not at work and he is slow rolling back home with his beautiful wife uh enjoying you know extending the the trip and having a great time so Yeah, that was cool.
00:02:54
Speaker
Yeah, it was pretty good to spend some time with. It was a pretty shitty thing to do to your buddy. Just let me just say that. What? What are you talking about? um For him to text me all day.
00:03:05
Speaker
Oh. oh it was I didn't know what you were referring to. Thank you. Okay. Let's get back to next time. Brent, by the way. Good job. Okay. There you go. Good job messing with Jerry.
00:03:17
Speaker
Yes, you did a great job. Anyways, yeah. So that was cool. um Well, first off, I don't want to let this thing get away from us, all right? So somebody's got to take control here. Last ah episode, I was not here, and you ah we had a um a fill-in guest who did a fantastic job, Mr. Toby Lowe. Is it murrell? Murrell? Murrell. Murrell?
00:03:42
Speaker
He says murrell. Murrell? Yeah, like like a painting? Like a Texan saying mural. Mural. I'll tell you, mural. Anyways, yeah, you guys did a good job. It was pretty pretty okay.
00:03:59
Speaker
Pretty okay. Yeah. I mean, again, Toby saved the day and kept everybody from falling asleep, but ah did want to shout ah him out and give a huge thank you.
00:04:09
Speaker
um i was kind of bummed to miss that one. I did do a ah ah brief check-in with you guys before you started, but I just couldn't. We couldn't figure that out if it was going to, if I joined for a little bit, if it was going to actually stick or screw you guys over. So at any rate, yeah yeah, he did good. But I did realize that ah when I do make my next knife, ah I'm probably going to call it the Toby cutter.

Knife Making and Social Media Humor

00:04:36
Speaker
The Toby cutter?
00:04:39
Speaker
Why, Jared? Okay, let me tell you, Dennis, because during one of the fuck during one of his little deals, All right, guys. Y'all know, everybody knows. And I had a whole big dose of it out at Texas. You know, the whole poke. So you're not making anything. You're not making knives anymore. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:04:57
Speaker
All great. However, He made a comment about something like, he has two grinders and two ovens and the but du to be and my I got all riled up. I was driving home from the airport on the Tuesday evening.
00:05:14
Speaker
And sure as shit, the next knife I made is going to be so purely out of spite to shut that up. Well, good. It worked, Toby. It worked. No, I'm not going to do it. I'm not going to make another one. But yeah, no, I was i was laughing pretty good, though. I was I found myself yelling at my radio. Mother fuck.
00:05:34
Speaker
so So that was pretty good. Yeah, you did get your balls busted quite a few times this weekend about knife making. So i I actually kind of felt bad after a while that we were endlessly busting your balls. so Why would you feel bad?
00:05:53
Speaker
Explain that. I'm a little curious. Because, you know, sometimes you take it too seriously. I just just in the car alone when Toby says it. Apparently he's the only one that gets under my skin.
00:06:07
Speaker
No, I mean, come on. Let's let's just let's just get that out of the way. Right. You know, I i have made a decision. i am OK with this decision. And then when I do get irritated, though, that's my fault because I'm the dumbass that comes on here every week and tells everybody what I'm doing. All the rest of you.
00:06:23
Speaker
wonderful people in our community can be Instagram, you know, pretty and not share what's really going on. And, uh, I just talk about it. So,

Travel Adventures and Culinary Experiences

00:06:32
Speaker
um, yeah, no, it was cool, man. I, all of the good pokes and jabs were all, all awesome. Well-timed some little, uh, little better than others, but it was, it was all good.
00:06:44
Speaker
Um, so, but prior to me leaving to Texas, I had to go to Idaho on Monday Um, and Tuesday. So I flew in Sunday night, was there Monday, Tuesday.
00:06:59
Speaker
Um, and then we'll get into it on my whole thing on breakfast. But, um, we, uh, went to a place in Idaho. though This is the place,
00:07:10
Speaker
that ah last time I went there, I looked around and I was literally the only brown guy in in the in the in the dining hall, right? And I started laughing to myself. I told my buddy I was working with.
00:07:24
Speaker
And then this time, we they were busting my balls about it. They were like, oh, hey, this is the place where you know that happened. I go, yeah, yeah, I did. um and the waitress comes out and we start talking.
00:07:36
Speaker
And I don't know how it happens, but she ended up, calling me. ah Next time I come in here, I'm going call. She goes, next time I come in here, I'm going to call you chorizo. And I was like, excuse me?
00:07:52
Speaker
And then she brings out this dude, the cook from the back. And tells me, like, to should try to introduce me to him. And I was like, hi, I'm Chorizo. It's like we were going to have some Latin-Mexican connection of some kind, and I was going to speak to him. Bro, it was it was absolutely hilarious. I couldn't... I can't imagine the awkwardness that that dude spoke, because he didn't speak a lick of English.
00:08:17
Speaker
and And you don't speak lick Spanish, so you two were... We were like a match made in nowhere. Yeah. Like it shouldn't have happened. But this lady straight said, Oh my God. Yeah. Next time you come in, I'm gonna call you chorizo. I was like, for what?
00:08:37
Speaker
I mean, it was, it was good. It was, it was, it was a lot of fun, but yeah. So that's what I had to do. I had to go to, um Idaho Monday, Tuesday, come home Wednesday and then fly out to Texas on Thursday.
00:08:51
Speaker
so I was fucking whooped, uh, on yesterday afternoon and today it was not, not the, not the fastest of days. I can tell you that I tell you what,
00:09:05
Speaker
but, uh, yeah, ah Yeah, it was it was a bit of a rough flight getting down there. You sound like you had a worse flight coming back, but my one going down Oh, my God. Thank you for reminding me.
00:09:18
Speaker
American Airlines, row 24, seat on that 732 or 30, whatever the hell we flew on. There was... thirty two or thirty whatever the hell we flew on there was thirty there was not a single millimeter of cushion in the seat that I sat in.
00:09:36
Speaker
I literally sat like on a concrete pad. My ass hurt so bad from like, I, there was nothing I could do to get comfortable. There was like zero cushion on there.
00:09:46
Speaker
First time I've ever experienced that. And I had like one of the largest mammals in the history of the world sitting next to me too. who like So I had like three quarters of a half of a no cushion seat. Oh, that wasn't me, by the way.
00:10:02
Speaker
No, it was not. Yeah. Yeah. My seat wouldn't recline on the way down, which was no fun. And on the way back was pretty good, though. I actually slept a bit on a flight, on both flights, which I almost never do. I didn't sleep but not a lick.
00:10:16
Speaker
I did watch the new, uh, chill. I watched the poop cruise. So good. It was good. So it was really good. It's so bad and good. Yeah. Like I'll never look at those red hazard bags the same.
00:10:30
Speaker
Um, and then, I watched the chili pepper, uh, documentary thing that came out. I was, but that was really good actually. So, uh, yeah, i gotta watch that.
00:10:42
Speaker
It was great. But yeah, we we got down there. was like Thursday 10-ish, 10 o'clock-ish around there. We landed and then Brent was nice enough to pick us up at the airport, which was cool.
00:11:00
Speaker
I got to the hotel. Brent had already checked in, dumped off. And not only did Brent pick us up from the airport, though, but he picked us up and he had ah Bucky's in tow. That's right. Yeah, we were. I wasn't in Texas for, but I don't know, 20 minutes. And I was already crowning a peach cobbler little get up, getting all sugar, getting all strung up on the mountain peach cobbler pie.
00:11:26
Speaker
Yeah, that was that's how you're supposed to be received. If you if you don't know. Yeah, yeah. I had an apple pie and it was delicious. That sounds it. Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:38
Speaker
But then we got there and we hooked up with Koi and the boys at a bar and just, you know, did a little...
00:11:51
Speaker
shooting of the shit with the Koi and the boys and Kyle from Sharky, Half-Lang Shark Knives was there and a bunch of other folks. So that was pretty cool.
00:12:02
Speaker
and That's really all we did Thursday night was just hang out and yeah, Jason Knight was there, a bunch of others and yeah, That was pretty cool. it was a good little relaxing evening before.
00:12:16
Speaker
Did you have a cigar? I do not smoke at all. And cigars kind of give me a headache at the best of times. So I did not have a cigar. But it was at a cigar bar.
00:12:27
Speaker
But luckily it was not. drenched in cigar smoker i would have had a hard time the fuck it wasn't there was a million cigars going in there yeah i just i don't mind i like to have a cigar every now and again um but yeah if if i'm not dude that would that would be unbearable i don't know how somebody doesn't smoke was was hanging out in there if it would have been packed and everyone would have been smoking i i would have had a hard time But there was weird. We like closed the place down. So it was there was only like a dozen of us.
00:13:00
Speaker
So it was not that that busy.
00:13:04
Speaker
I could imagine that place being way busier.
00:13:08
Speaker
But yeah yeah, it was like four empty seats.
00:13:13
Speaker
No, there was a whole well, the people were in the back room, though. We were in. Anyway, we had a good time, and it was it was fun. um And then Friday morning, ah we did the breakfast, because Jared has to have breakfast.
00:13:31
Speaker
And we went to the same place that he went last year with... um Lawrence from Maritime Knife Supply. I'll do the quick ad read here. If you guys need anything for knife making, he's the guy to get it from. Go to Maritime Knife Supply for all your abrasives, steel, equipment, tooling, you name it, they got it. But last year, Mr. Lawrence was, and Jared were, what did who was I doing last year? I forget why I couldn't even go.
00:14:05
Speaker
But, um, They went to breakfast last year and raved about this baby Dutch sampler. And um I don't know. I was kind of let down.
00:14:16
Speaker
It was not what I expected. um Jared's still sitting here in disbelief that I didn't like it, but it's not not my thing.
00:14:30
Speaker
He's like Mr. Blinky right now. I just, I don't know, man. I'm just, I don't know. ah Yeah. So anyways, I did find out, though, that there are some people in this world that don't wake up dreaming of pancakes like the moment they wake up. And it blows my mind because that's what happens. That's every single day of my life. I wake up and I think about breakfast, eating pancakes, French toast, bacon, eggs, potatoes, toast, the whole thing. And there's i'm so i I swear there's not a single day that goes by that that's not what I wake up wanting.
00:15:03
Speaker
And to find out that some people are like, meh, I can take it leave it. Most people are not like you in many ways. That's fine. But that's what makes me me is that I don't believe that.
00:15:15
Speaker
So it still blows my mind um because breakfast is super important. But the whole thing with the baby sampler, the beautiful, the Dutch, beautiful baby Dutch sampler is is the way that the lady says it. So I'm trying to have a good time everywhere I go and, ah talking to the people with the Southern draw, just absolutely. i made that lady say beautiful baby sampler, like a a million times. Are are you sure? um but no, it was not anything like I remembered and I don't, and I really just wanted it for the, uh, for them to say it.
00:15:51
Speaker
And, ah and then you ordered two of them. I did order two of them because I didn't realize that there was eight. And I'm glad that we did. But somebody read. We didn't even finish one.
00:16:03
Speaker
a We didn't even finish the one. Yeah, because when we also ordered full breakfasts on top of that. so But that's what I do. I'll order a ah a bacon, I mean, a pancake or something like that, have three bites and throw it away.
00:16:16
Speaker
And then have my my real breakfast. But yeah. That was good. Brent liked it. He ordered again. um So you are all alone with what you were thinking. But you're there. You're there. A sweets guy, a pancake, you know, kind of dude. And that I get. That's not for everybody. But this the shit is weird. But the next day.
00:16:36
Speaker
I ordered what they call a German pancake, which i mean, i I don't understand what the hell it is, to be honest with you, because I don't remember the eggs being a part of the the Dutch sampler plate.
00:16:49
Speaker
So it tastes it was nothing like I expected either. So I

Highlights from the Knife Show

00:16:53
Speaker
don't remember the egg, but I got this big old German pancake, which is supposedly... um it has some like egg what what were we calling it like ah like a giant crepe almost ah like a like an eggy crepe or a flat souffle like egg souffle yeah with like some kind of some kind of doughy shit on top anyways the other one and I just really wanted a pancake but I thought it was going to be like a really thin pancake was what I was thinking and that time we were with Noah ah you weren't even there because you were you had a good time the night before um but they bring this thing out and they it's massive it's like a ah bigger plate and they put
00:17:36
Speaker
a shit ton of butter, a shit ton of like powdered sugar. And then they have like two, I'd say, uh, one and a half, um, lemons.
00:17:46
Speaker
And I am, I'm not a lemon guy. Like I don't, i don't like it at all. It's not anything I care for. I don't like like lemon tarts or lemon sweets or any any any variety like that. And they dump... They go and they start freaking squeezing all these lemons in it. And I am pissed.
00:18:01
Speaker
like ah Brent's looking at me and I'm like, I'm about to send this shit back. And I never do that because... I'm for sure. I'm going to hate it. And then I'm like, can you just give me like a tub of syrup, please? Cause I'm just going to just douse this thing with, with syrup.
00:18:15
Speaker
And ah then the the last thing she says before she leaves, she, then she folds it all up into this, like, biscuit looking like, like you almost like a a what? A burrito.
00:18:26
Speaker
Almost, almost, but like a biscuit with a bow on top of it. It was, I don't know. It was, it was interesting. And, um, she goes now I saw you that you got the syrup. She's like, but this stuff is really sweet. Just try it without it.
00:18:38
Speaker
And I'm like, all right. So begrudgingly I go and I'd fucking get into this thing. Holy shit, Dennis. It was fantastic. I was so surprised. I cannot believe i liked it.
00:18:51
Speaker
And um I didn't taste a hint of lemon. um And it was fantastic. So I don't know what the hell it is. I actually liked the the the egg, the pastry, whatever. i liked that part.
00:19:07
Speaker
I just didn't like that it was like, it was like they put um fruit on it that was like really watery. Like they yeah like they like ladled it out of something and the bottom of the plate had like an eighth inch of water on the bottom and it made everything soggy. It was like ah fructose water, like like jarred fruits or some shit like that. Yeah. That part wasn't a fan of. I think the one you got sounds like it would have been better.
00:19:36
Speaker
ah it It was fucking good. That was good. like i would I'll get it again just just for that. But um yeah, that was that was interesting to to say the least. I was so surprised though. I couldn't believe that I liked it. I ended up eating almost most of it.
00:19:52
Speaker
And then I had like 14 pork chops and eggs. That's all I had. The three days we were there, i had pork chops every time. So i have I've had my fill of pork chops. And i had pork chops for dinner. Yeah, you were like a porkaholic. Yeah. That's that's what it's about.
00:20:09
Speaker
But um yeah, we hung out. We did the cigar things. Great to see Koi. You know what? i also got an opportunity to hang out with his brother, Jay, and finally talk. And I didn't realize that, like,
00:20:20
Speaker
I never talked to him. He's there in Atlanta a lot, but like I'm, you know, dancing around and talking a whole bunch of people, but, uh, shit, Jay's, Jay's awesome.
00:20:31
Speaker
And, um, they, uh, also, i don't know if you guys know that though. They make some of the most awesome powder. They make the awesome, the awesomeness of all awesome.
00:20:44
Speaker
pattern welded steel. And if you're in the market to get some, go check out Baker Forge and Tool. Use the app. You can get early access one day sooner than the website for all of their drops.
00:20:56
Speaker
um Do you have what they're into this week? I did not get an email, so... I didn't i didn't i didn't check that this time. But, um yeah, you can roll with the whole ah process there. You can clean it, etch it, and protect it. You can clean it with Grime Reaper um and etch it with... ah their line of Gator Piss, the OG, Gator Heavy and Gator Max for the stainless steel. And then when you're all done, make sure you ah coat it all for that protective nano ceramic coating Gator skin.
00:21:32
Speaker
And you can use the discount code TTT10 once you load up your cart with all of that good stuff and you can get 10% off.
00:21:42
Speaker
Do it. Dennis says do it, so do it. um But yeah, that was really cool. So they keep getting cooler. i don't know how that's possible. But yeah. And then we open the show.
00:21:54
Speaker
And Koei and the boys are just fun to talk to. They are always pretty animated. And, you know, it was it was fun. We had fun Friday night as well. But we'll get to that.
00:22:06
Speaker
Um, but Friday got into the show, actually before the show, cause you and Brent, cause Brent had an extra ticket for his table. So you and Brent went early after, um, uh, like right after breakfast, you guys went in and then I actually went over to, um, Starbucks cause I wanted a real coffee.
00:22:27
Speaker
Uh, and I met, um, Jeff Carey and Colin, who I never... That was Saturday. What's that? That Saturday. That was Saturday. That was Saturday.
00:22:38
Speaker
Shit, you're right. That was Saturday. Okay, sorry. Friday. i went I was in line Friday. That's what was, and then you came and got me. yeah Yeah. Okay, sorry. We'll hold that for the Saturday discussion. But, yeah, we got in, um and it was cool. My first thoughts were that...
00:22:54
Speaker
um Blade Texas was probably twice as big as the last time I went, which I thought was crazy. I didn't go last year, and I don't think I went the year before.
00:23:08
Speaker
So I hadn't been in three years, and it's definitely like doubled in size. I remember when I got in there, I felt like they opened up at least one more section. it was It was cool. ah Great to see that it's it's grown so much.
00:23:24
Speaker
But how was it compared to last year when you went? Exactly the same. Okay. Yep. Exactly the same. The only thing different was the concession stand was on the opposite side.
00:23:37
Speaker
The concession stand wasn't in that big old open area with the arena. Yeah, I've never seen that arena place open. Like it was never... Yeah. That was never open when I was... That was only difference. It was exactly the same, same layout, same everything, same size, um which I think is just is perfect.
00:23:55
Speaker
It's not too small. It's not too big. ah Just lends to... I think the word I kept using was like, it's it's it's like intimate in a way because how perfectly sized it is. um

Personal and Community Growth

00:24:09
Speaker
But there's plenty to do. You can't. I mean, two days is plenty.
00:24:12
Speaker
it's it's It's just, it's appropriately done. It's just done right for for the size and for everybody that's there. Yeah, it was good. Plenty to do, lots to see, lots of makers, ah good booths. I think there was less um vendors, though, like bigger vendors, because I didn't see many. um
00:24:37
Speaker
No, I guess the no, they were. It was all there. It was just a little different. I thought there was a lot of production knife guys there. Yeah, that increased. So I can't put my finger on who wasn't there that I'm thinking of, but yeah, it lot more. I remember SpiderCo. It was the only one I didn't. They were there. They were there? Okay.
00:24:54
Speaker
I didn't remember. um And Microtech was there too, right Yeah, they had a small. Yeah, it was pretty small. Not the big one have in Atlanta. But um yeah, it was it was good. Not...
00:25:09
Speaker
um some vendors Some material vendors, like Janssen Pops and Texas Faire Supply. and experiment Make Your Material Supply was there.
00:25:23
Speaker
um There was a leather dealer there that I wish would go to Atlanta um that I got some really cool stuff at. So yeah, lots of lots of stuff.
00:25:36
Speaker
It was great. I was very pleased with the the layout and the number of you know things that were there. um I did find myself kind of du that Blade Texas used to be the thing that Parker and I went to because he and I would go um and and you didn't go. So it was kind of like our thing. We went to it a couple of years.
00:26:01
Speaker
And so I felt myself missing Parker a little bit when we were there, but it was good. I know he's ah he's busy doing other things. So that's all right. But, um, Ladies and gentlemen, you just witnessed a little bit of human emotion from Dennis Terrell right there.
00:26:18
Speaker
The cyborg has just broken a circuit. I'm so proud of you, man. I love when you do that. that's That's awesome, right? I think the whole thing about doing things with people that you love and you care about is is making the memories, right? So when you make the memories, that's what sticks with you. And then you go to a place where, you know, you've made some memories and that person's not there.
00:26:38
Speaker
it's a very, very natural ah reaction to to miss them, especially when they're all growing up and doing shit that, you know, that you're not a part of right now. So, yeah, I get that.
00:26:49
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Jerry Jr. is going to be like that pretty soon. Enjoy. Yeah. That's why I'm not making any knives. That's why I'm not making any knives. That's why I'm golfing all the time and doing that. Speaking of, oh, my God, we almost got through without a golf segment here. I haven't golfed in a week, so I'm going through straight absolute golf withdrawals.
00:27:07
Speaker
First thing i did, walked Why cry about it I'm crying about it right now. I walked straight in the house ah last night at at midnight almost, I think by the time I got home, um and grabbed my fucking wedge and started chipping balls onto my couch just to scratch the itch.
00:27:24
Speaker
Boring! And then on the... ah But the week before I left, i ended up, and this is how golf goes, I shot my lowest round ever. I shot an 83.
00:27:36
Speaker
Dennis, I shot an 83. And the fucking best part about that, I was two over on the back. That's like almost professional status. I'll probably never do that. I'll you what.
00:27:48
Speaker
I'll tell you what.
00:27:52
Speaker
And then I followed it up with ah with an 88 the last time I did. So I'm ah probably going to shoot like a fucking 2,000 next time I go out because that's just the way golf is. But... um And then Jared started his job at the, uh, at the golf course. That's super cool. Speaking of, you know, um, of the boy.
00:28:12
Speaker
So the last time I golfed, uh, the time that I did, I shot that round, he was actually there. Um, he was taking down the flag as I was finishing the, uh, my last hole.
00:28:24
Speaker
So he's all fired up. He's got a job. He got his first paycheck. Um, yeah, dude, it's, it's really cool. Um, so, and then, uh, I think that's part of the Saturday talk. So anyways, yeah.
00:28:38
Speaker
So golf is great. And everybody that doesn't think so. So if you don't like golf and you don't like breakfast, just kick rocks, fool. Get out here. So you're telling me to kick rocks. That's it.
00:28:49
Speaker
Yeah. Get the hell away from This is the freaking the fire and steel last freaking episode of Triple T. I can't do this anymore.
00:29:01
Speaker
Well, i will I will take this opportunity to talk about why I went to Blade, Texas and my experience Friday. me your mouth. that off a Oh, what? I'm sorry.
00:29:17
Speaker
Unlike golf, many people actually want to hear this. I did. Let's hear Dennis talk about how great he did. and No, actually, it it wasn't about that. So I did take four knives for review, um and I tried to get in there early, so I wasn't.
00:29:37
Speaker
uh trying to talk to talk to these folks while they were customers at their tables um wenton's first first guy i spoke to was bill burke um because he did give me probably the best feedback um on my journeyman knives and uh immediately went to him and showed him and uh yeah he he he picked him apart pretty good um there was a couple of things on the dagger mainly the guard um the quillians were off the ends of the quillians were not symmetrical enough and there was a gap in the guard anyway there's a few things with the guard um and
00:30:20
Speaker
But what surprised me is that a couple of things that I thought they were gonna nail me on, like the twist and the wire, they did not. um And it did kind of surprise me that basically all of the all of the masters, they just ignore the steel.
00:30:39
Speaker
they just They pretty much ignore the Damascus and the blade. um You're basically doing that for you. You're not doing that for them. They don't care. They're going to judge everything that you put in front of them. Except acceptum to Damascus.
00:30:56
Speaker
Well, no, no. as in it's not um andlet like If you put a monosteel blade in front of them, they're going to judge everything. you know, grind lines and they can see lines easier on mono steel. That's why journeyman knives have to be mono steel. They're going to judge you on sanding and other J hooks and things like that. For Damascus, yeah, you can hide some of that.
00:31:19
Speaker
But, you know, there there are things that they're going to judge you on. So basically the over, you know, the the to cut to the chase, the overwhelming feedback was that um go simpler.
00:31:35
Speaker
don't give them so much to judge you on is what the overwhelming, feedback was. They all love the dagger. They all love the, the fluting on the dagger, the, you know, but there was things that they nailed me on, um like a couple of the plunge lines were off just by a tiny little bit like that, the plunge lines in the symmetry, that's what they're going to look at the most.
00:32:01
Speaker
So, uh, if you guys are doing journeymen and, or if you're thinking about doing master at some point, that's what you're gonna have to look for. um And they're just like stylistic things of like, hey, don't choose this on the guard because it's more difficult and they're just gonna judge you on it.
00:32:19
Speaker
So it really made me think. Did you fuck plunge? What's that? Did you mess up the plunges? Like, were they any were they worse than your journeyman's? No, no, no, no. It's just that the, you know, they're like, oh, well, this one's a tiny bit off on the top of the, um the top radius on the plunge.
00:32:41
Speaker
is just a little bit, you know, not exactly perfect side to side. They're looking for perfection. do you think that it's more specific on the Master? Oh, yeah, of course. Like they would let that plunge line ride on knife?
00:32:59
Speaker
Yes, for sure. Yeah. Yeah, you can have mistakes like, but if they see a plunge line off, if they see, um I had one, i had two knives, one that the it was the last knife I did for the set, the termination on the false edge was way off. I don't know.
00:33:22
Speaker
i don't know if I made it worse and didn't notice, but it one of them was way off. When I say way off, like off. sixteenth off um And they, Bill noticed that right away.
00:33:35
Speaker
and And you didn't. i I noticed it early on. I thought I fixed it, but apparently I. That's what I'm trying to get at. Yeah, that's what I'm trying to get at. Like.
00:33:47
Speaker
Yeah, there were there was things that, you know, i maybe I didn't think they, um you know, they were much about. Yeah. But god it what would basically boiled down to I wanted to hear what they were going to judge. I wanted to hear what the things that they were going to point out versus the things I thought they were going to point out.
00:34:08
Speaker
So that was a really great exercise. I i always tell people if you're going to do JS or or master, you should go to Blade, Texas because it's three months before Atlanta where you're going to get judged.
00:34:21
Speaker
and you have three months to now fix or make new knives and you'll get ah ton of feedback. So it was a great exercise. im Definitely going to go simpler on those knives when I actually make them. It did give me a ton more confidence on what I need to do for them.
00:34:41
Speaker
Sorry, folks, had a little glitch, audio glitch there, but we're back. um Yeah, I was saying, it It's good to go to Blade Atlanta. I got some great feedback.
00:34:52
Speaker
I know what to fix. So I'm happy that I went. And

Knife Craftsmanship and Product Highlights

00:34:57
Speaker
I'll be there this time next year with hopefully real MasterSmith knives to show the same guys. So it was good.
00:35:05
Speaker
but So you're going to have redo the set? Yeah, I did not anticipate that any of these were going to end up in my MasterSmith set. I was resigned that that was not the case. Unless...
00:35:18
Speaker
by some miracle they all said yeah these are great absolutely i did not think that was going to be the case so uh i was going in pessimistically uh which is good because none of them are going to make it but um but uh on to the good news is now i have a lot of blades done for atlanta so i'll be working on some more and um in fact i was working on handles today for some knives with some grip x that i picked up from matt at grip tech um and if you guys don't know what grip tech is you must be living in a hole um but uh grip x is a product from grip tech uh you can go check them out at grip tech official on ig or grip tech.com um
00:36:10
Speaker
I put together some segmented scales with the Grip-X that I got and ah love that stuff. So go check it out. Comes in a ton of different colors. um They also have the Limitless version, which shines up even nicer. And you can have higher finishes. And they've got a whole bunch of the 3D printed stuff, which actually was cool because I got to see a bunch of that in person that I had never seen before.
00:36:35
Speaker
So that was really cool. So yeah, go get yourself some GripX. Use the discount code TTT10. So yeah, working on knives for Atlanta already. They might end up getting sold on the website before that, but we'll see.
00:36:51
Speaker
You got yourself some GripX too, didn't you? I did. What colors did you pick up? um I got the glow this time. i had not used any of the glow variety.
00:37:03
Speaker
um So I got a and like a something blue in it that he had just finished. It was awesome. They put it under the the little black light thing. So freaking cool.
00:37:18
Speaker
And and i can't remember the other one i got but that was uh both of the sets i got were from the glow line because i have never used that stuff and that shit's awesome so yeah very and then and yeah it was awesome to see matt um i i i like that guy a lot he's uh he's one of the the few people that uh is very uh continuously at my my ball busting level and and i super appreciate it and i think the coolest part about it was that we've all agreed that you can't be that way with you because you're a little sensitive so
00:38:02
Speaker
you can suck it it oh but then yeah we got to meet his uh his buddy uh martin uh i think it's fishing knives um really cool dude um who's helping him out uh and yeah i was just it was really cool to to see and hang out with him for a bit so Yeah, go get yourself some ah Grip X and use the discount code TTT10.
00:38:34
Speaker
The newsletter ah featured Scales of the Week will probably reconvene next week. um we We hit the end of it last week. I think he had to drive like 18 hours or 15 hours or something like that on Sunday, so he wasn't going to get it.
00:38:55
Speaker
locked in today but next week be on the lookout for the newsletter and the featured scale of the week uh and the discount code and you can um until further notice you can double up on those discounts with the triple t10 and the newsletter discount so do that for sure
00:39:14
Speaker
We also got to see Mr. Frank Machado and his wonderful wife, Nita, at the show. Frank's always a blast. um Very cool dude. Fun to hang out with. And we got some hammers.
00:39:29
Speaker
got the best at Blade Show. i got the best hug in bla show Nina's was pretty good too, but Frank's is just absolutely incredible. All right. Okay. Sorry. i do i just need feeling Yeah. Yeah. You got yourself a do a double diagonal, a double peen.
00:39:51
Speaker
Yes. I got the closest thing to the curvy peen on the market right now. So the curvy peen hasn't quite yet been released, but I did get the double dual headed diagonal and I was thrilled to do that.
00:40:07
Speaker
i And I got to tell you guys, it was very fun watching Jared trying to figure out. He's he's in the car looking at it, and he's trying to figure it out because he keeps flipping it over. And I think you're looking at the face that's facing you, and you keep flipping it over and not understanding how the double thing works. it was Yeah, I was convinced he gave me a backwards one.
00:40:31
Speaker
For sure. thought it was too right? too right like Yeah, was like, I already have one. i yeah know like give Give me the other side, too. Yeah, that bent bent my brain a little bit. So Dennis has always enjoys the the... You know, like John Wayne said, you know, life is harder when you're stupid.
00:40:53
Speaker
So... Yeah, what did you get? I got the cross peen because I don't have it. yeah Actually... I have a crappy old cross peen that I made and bought from Lowe's, which I don't even use anymore. Um, cause I have the straight peen, but once in a while it is kind of, kind of nice to have your cream, your peen crossed. Um, get your peens cross mojinated.
00:41:17
Speaker
Oh, it's nice to have a cross, a crossy peen, um, once in a while. Um, so yeah, I picked up one of those to, uh, have on the, uh, on the anvil.
00:41:31
Speaker
Nice. Because I have seen students like, ah you know, trying to contort their body in order to use the straight peen because they want to hit something in a specific way and be nice. to Just hand them a different hammer.
00:41:45
Speaker
Yeah. That's always that. I mean, the only thing better than having one fat peen in your hand, the only thing grander is having two. Having a double. Having a double. Yeah.
00:41:56
Speaker
Ain't it grand to have two fat peens in your hand.
00:42:04
Speaker
yes no yeah it's always great to see frank and we got to have our uh have a good uh chat with him there for a while just full of stories dude that guy's yeah he's the complete opposite of dennis he has lots of energy so lots of energy lots of stories um yes but yeah he's he's a fun guy so if you guys need a hammer go check out two bastards texas smithian supplies and uh yeah go get some franken beans Frank and beans.
00:42:34
Speaker
Frank and beans. I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what. That's not going to get old ever.
00:42:45
Speaker
um Especially you don't let anybody in on it. but That's the fun part. Yeah. yeah um yeah we did we walked around we uh met a lot of people friday and uh then the show wrapped up and uh where we go for dinner oh yeah we went to uh some steakhouse for dinner and um yeah that was pretty good you didn't like yours but i did and i like bo mine was great you just ordered the wrong thing you ordered pork chops again
00:43:21
Speaker
I don't know how that's ever wrong in any fucking day, but yeah, it was that night. ah Yeah. What are they just dry? Salty as shit.
00:43:33
Speaker
Like overwhelmingly. Huh. Should have sent it back. No, i don't do that. Only if there's red onions.
00:43:43
Speaker
That's the only thing that gets sent back. Yeah. but yeah know i would i but did To kind of back up here. Friday we start. Brent gets going. um i got the opportunity to kind of be some assistance to him.
00:43:57
Speaker
um And ah to see the show from that side, um it is a very, very different vibe and flow than Atlanta.
00:44:09
Speaker
um It was way more consistent. And never really as intense as Atlanta, if that makes any sense. like the the Even on Saturday, you never get this like,
00:44:23
Speaker
rush of people where there's like just you're on to the next to the next it was like a steady stream of folks it was definitely busier saturday than it was friday um but then you know my my whole objective was to to try to cruise around and see um tables and talk to people um but you know we have awesome listeners and and we're yeah i just i'm so humbled and overwhelmed by the amount of support and the and the feedback that we get, oh that I get um when I'm talking to to people, because you I'm trying walking from one end to the next and you're just you know you get stopped and talking and you get in these conversations.
00:45:08
Speaker
And ah like ah the entirety of the show was, for me, it was just like a a awesome, no stress, no no pressure, no just a very cool stroll vibe. between people I hadn't met people that I've been looking forward to seeing. Um, it was just, it was fantastic.
00:45:28
Speaker
Um, and I, I really, really, really enjoy that show. Like it's fast become the thing that I look forward to. Uh, Atlanta's its own thing and it's, and it's awesome for me as well. But, uh, this is, this show is, is really good.
00:45:48
Speaker
Yeah. There was definitely not that, I know what you mean by like, There's times in Atlanta where you can't even walk between the tables because there's so many people, but it's very surgy.
00:45:59
Speaker
Like there'll be a surge and then there'll be a lull. And don't put you you're right. We didn't really get that in Texas. No. And I don't feel the surge from on the other side of the table, right? I feel it from being on the sell side, right? Yeah. Like, that part is is taxing sometimes at Atlanta. Like, it's from the next to the next. You just feel like a fucking parrot, you're you know, you're saying? Yeah. Saying the same thing to the same people, same dumb joke, same thing, same this. And it's just like, by the end, you're, you know, you're losing your voice and you're, and and it's like a couple hours at a time. It feels like it goes right there. And it it just, you know, i I didn't get that. Not, not one time.
00:46:40
Speaker
Um, And that's cool. That's a good good flow to have, I guess. um But yeah, the everybody that we got to talk to and meet, yeah thank you for for all the kind words and um really, really enjoyed. Yeah, just it was super cool.
00:46:58
Speaker
um And then i Irish goodbye everybody on Friday night atne yeah at the pool hall What was that place? It was a library, right?
00:47:11
Speaker
Yeah, that was pretty cool. I like that place. When I heard that Koi and the boys wanted to play pool, um I'm all in. And yeah, that was fun. Boring.
00:47:24
Speaker
ah that is a very fun game you just suck it it's not my fault it's just like me and go i whooped your ass all right okay let's play again and uh no slop this time let's play again yeah no it's not my thing uh but i mean you you have to understand though like the the i enjoy playing pool at like in the atmosphere like I did with you at your house. Right. But, um, I can only do the bar for so long. I get it. i totally, I, it just, it, and it's not anything like I'm, I feel weird or anything like that. It's just, it, At some point during that that time, everything kind of switches and and I quickly have to identify for my own reasons that it's time for me to go. and Plus, i was fucking tired.
00:48:12
Speaker
So um that was cool. And it's awesome to just be able to, all right, guys, see you later. And then you just go take a nice stroll down the windy tunnel and watch my beard fucking float away. That's fucking cool.
00:48:27
Speaker
but Oh yeah, Coy I got our freaking best beards in building picture. That was awesome. Oh, I didn't see that picture. Oh yeah. it's ah it was It was glorious.
00:48:38
Speaker
yeah I have not posted any pictures since everyone else is posting theirs and we were tagged in a bunch of them. I didn't bother. yeah I'll post them in a couple of days. But yeah, it was it was fun playing pool with the boys. I played with Jordan from JB Blades the most. where I was partnered up with him and playing against Grayson, who was just shit-faced. Having a good time. still winning. you still do he must be a He's a really good pool player because he was shit-faced and he was still winning half the time.
00:49:14
Speaker
He looked like he was having fun for sure. Yeah, he was he was having fun. um But it was fun. We ended up closing the place. And yeah, it was it was good.
00:49:27
Speaker
it was a It was a late night though. I kind of slept in Saturday morning while you and Brent went to breakfast. But yeah, it was good.
00:49:38
Speaker
it was good But, um yeah, while you guys went to breakfast, I went to Starbucks and met up randomly. I didn't plan it, but I randomly met up with Jeff Carey, um who I knew had some shirts that um and some stickers ready because he had sent me the picture and asked for my blessing on them.
00:50:04
Speaker
And these are hilarious. have Have you posted those on social media yet? um yeah yeah i did a story about him yeah so those are pretty funny and it's a picture of jared and i i'm like sitting down i have all these gold chains and jared's got his sparkly vest and it says uh it's some callbacks to some previous shows but it says straight out of canada and and to the little latino boy at the bottom so uh it was pretty funny um it got a lot of uh a lot of attention and uh
00:50:39
Speaker
Jared Pope pointing at the shirt to somebody and saying, Hey, that's me. You know, that's me. Yeah. That's how I found out. Like Colin came up to me and said, uh, he introduced himself. I don't know if I'd actually, if I'd met him, i feel like I had, but at any rate, he was like, you know, um,
00:50:55
Speaker
And he was wearing the shirt and he was like, hey, have you have you ran into Jeff? And I'm like, no, I haven't seen him. And I'm like, and I'm i'm supposed to, I guess, you know, I'll run into him. And then I look and he's like, yeah, he's got the the shirts. And I looked and I'm like, holy shit, that's me. And I was talking to some lady trying to buy some scales or some material or something like that. I can't remember. And I just I looked at her and I was like, hey, that's me. Look at which was weird, like on 10, 10 different types of weird level. But, uh, it was, it was really awesome. Um, really cool.
00:51:26
Speaker
Yeah. It was pretty funny. Yeah. As a, Yeah, i i I thoroughly enjoyed it. And that was super awesome. he does Jeff does some really cool stuff with the AI. And like i said, we just have we have the greatest listeners, man. They're just they're always poking support and doing shit like that. And you know like I said, it's humbling. It makes it feel pretty damn special sometimes. It's pretty cool.
00:51:52
Speaker
Yeah, actually, we did miss the which I was but mildly upset about, not upset, but disappointed. We did miss the Blade Awards, which I do tend to like to watch. Those are always Friday night.
00:52:05
Speaker
i don't know i The problem is we didn't even know where they were. um I had no intention on going. I don't feel like I missed anything. don't give two shits. I like to see the the the custom awards and see like best Damascus. Yeah, I would have i wouldve done that would have done exactly what I did. That sucks you didn't get to see it. Well, we went out to dinner, and it was a kind of a late dinner, so we wouldn't have made it anyway.
00:52:33
Speaker
But... Oh, and yeah, and john John Chandler made these little... I want to say it's like there's this reel that every single person has sent me. It's the ah like the leather golf ball holder that looks like a nutsack.
00:52:48
Speaker
You what talking about? Yeah. You've sent it to me. Everyone has sent it to me, right? And then it hangs down like a little carabined off your pant loop and you pull your balls off. And John Chandler made one. Yeah.
00:53:02
Speaker
um Apparently he got real, real cool and confirmed with Brent that orange is not my favorite color. So he made it an orange and it says Jared's balls on it. It was pretty cool.
00:53:15
Speaker
So I did. I got a picture with them. Does it have room for two or three? There's only two. Oh, they actually don't fit any golf balls, though. I tried when I got. home they don't fit golf balls? so Apparently my balls are too small for it. But
00:53:32
Speaker
but yeah, it was pretty cool.
00:53:38
Speaker
Yeah, and then Saturday did you know run it back again and and do all that. um Got the opportunity to to meet. um This was the the trip of the wives.
00:53:50
Speaker
um So we got to meet Noah's wife, Brian Hunt's wife. And then ah Brent's wife ended up joining us Saturday night too. So that was really cool. That was really cool to see Noah and and and hang out. Noah, Ryan, ah just ah everyone.
00:54:08
Speaker
Brigham, Micah, just on and on and on. Just our our crew, you know our people. And just this is good time.
00:54:19
Speaker
A lot of real real cool stuff. so And then... um And shit, and before know it, it's over, just like it happens.

Equipment Recommendations and Missed Opportunities

00:54:31
Speaker
What did you end buying? Were you a good boy or not? almost made it.
00:54:37
Speaker
ah So, okay, so I bought some carbon fiber, some eighth-inch carbon fiber, which is somewhat hard to find, some but some nice stuff. um And it was pretty cheap, so I was happy about that for folders. eating I need eighth-inch carbon fiber for folders, so I bought a bunch of that.
00:54:53
Speaker
I bought a bunch of leather. um They had a really good deal, the leather... purveyor that had a really good deal on like these caiman tails.
00:55:05
Speaker
So that, was and they were like, i think I got like four or five different colors, couple of black, got one in gray, really cool. And then they had some ostrich leather.
00:55:17
Speaker
which is very cool. And it was all, it was super cheap. They were only 15 bucks a piece. They're great. These are all for inlays on sheaths. So I think I got like three or four of the ostrich legs in different colors.
00:55:30
Speaker
So yeah, i got lots of that. I got some thin leather for overlay, um, the carbon fiber. And I was pretty, I was going to get away with like,
00:55:43
Speaker
250 bucks. maybe Maybe it was 300. I was going to get away with about 300 bucks. And the last hour of the show, i was i was at Micah's table.
00:55:56
Speaker
And between Micah's table and Brent's, where we were just going to pack up, I had to pass by Kieran's koa. And they and i asked him, I i yelled over Kieran, I said, hey, do you still have that set of scales?
00:56:12
Speaker
uh, ivory scales, big set of ivory scales. And I'm jokingly, I, I thought for sure he was going to say no, cause they were really nice. And he said, yes, I still have them. and i'
00:56:24
Speaker
as So I had to pick those up and they were not, they were pretty spendy. So, uh, yeah, you've, you showed me, im I'm like, Oh no. And then you showed me, you unfolded them. was like, Oh no. Yeah. Those were definitely more. No, no.
00:56:41
Speaker
That was about what I spent the whole time for that set of skills. So, yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, I got out of there with, it was like 700-ish. Oh, goodness.
00:56:52
Speaker
Yeah. I've had worse, but I've had better. um Yeah, I'm going to have to try and calm myself down at Atlanta.
00:57:03
Speaker
so But, um yeah, it was it was all good. I was happy and, yeah. Got the stuff I wanted. A couple of folks that weren't there, ah our buddies at Ameribraid couldn't make the show. But if you guys need a grinder, you got to go check out Ameribraid.com and check out the Fastback 2x72, the most amazing grinder on the planet, if you ask me.
00:57:32
Speaker
And if you ask Jared, if he doesn't keep blowing it up, um but go who use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off accessories or just TTT, that's TTT for discounts on machines.
00:57:47
Speaker
um They've got some cool stuff over there, so go check it out. They also have the HyperDisk, which is a rotary tool extraordinaire, a disc grinder, a buffer, a bunch of other attachments for it as well.
00:58:02
Speaker
So go check them out. They weren't at the show, but they'll be there in Atlanta for sure. So go get yourself a grinder. Yeah.
00:58:14
Speaker
And did you get your VFD? Is it sitting at home? Your replacement VFD? Yep, yep. That's right. Tomorrow I'm going to throw the new plug in and get that thing rolling. Right, right.
00:58:27
Speaker
And the boys at Even Heat also did not make the show. Yes, they did. What? Yes, they did. They did not. Even Heat was there? they did.
00:58:38
Speaker
Yeah. Quinn. I must have totally missed their booth. Brother Quinn was there. Oh, but they didn't have a booth. No, they did. i totally missed it. I don't know how I missed it.
00:58:49
Speaker
Well, you were probably looking at your own knives.
00:58:55
Speaker
No, seriously, I did not. I went over the booths. Where were they?
00:59:01
Speaker
They were general. Like if you come out of ah where Kieran was, if you went straight all the way down, they were they were on a booth on the right. Oh, damn it. Yeah. um Okay, I take it back. I guess they were there.
00:59:15
Speaker
And I totally missed them.
00:59:19
Speaker
So tell me about it. that was it. I went over there. I said, uh, hello to Quinn. And, uh, he goes, uh, he, he, he fucking cracked me up. Cause he was like, yeah, no, I'm not Spencer. You know, he's like, I go to these shows and he never, he doesn't make this one. And I'm like, yeah, well, yeah, forget Spencer dude. Um, but you know, I told him we were enjoying the, the knives and appreciate the the support and all that good stuff. Uh, and they had a, uh, I think either they got rid of one i only saw one um oven there so um but yeah like dennis said best even uh best kilns on the market uh and go get yourself uh two of them two of them let me mess around with one yeah you need to yeah cool cool uh okay i didn't see pelican pace there but did i miss them too nope he was not there yeah okay
01:00:15
Speaker
ah But if you guys need some specialty wax, hard wax, soft wax, Pelican oil, hand salve, soap, or you got that cast iron pan that you want to season, you want to get some butternut from pelicanpaste.com, use the discount code TTT10, and everything smells like oranges, so it's wonderful stuff.
01:00:37
Speaker
So go check them out, use the discount code, and tell them we sent you. Say hi to Travis. And you'll see him at Atlanta for sure.
01:00:49
Speaker
Yes, sir. All right. We got one more to do. We'll do that one after. Why don't we do some Maker Spotlight? Sure. All right. You go first.
01:01:02
Speaker
Macon, you go first. No. Why? I set it all up for you. I did it for you. Fine. I

Connecting with the Maker Community

01:01:13
Speaker
will do mine. Whenever I say let's do maker spotlight, you're supposed to jump in and go, oh, okay. My maker spotlight is.
01:01:21
Speaker
No, i I do enough. This one's on you. um I'm going to call our money. There's something beautiful about the screeching halt that happens when it's your turn. And I just, I'm not going to rob myself or anybody else about that. So.
01:01:37
Speaker
Look at you squirming. It's so good. Please continue. I'm going to call out Elemental Forge, our buddy Chris Lozacco. Yeah, Lozacco. His website says it sounds like Christmas taco. but But...
01:01:53
Speaker
um Chris Lozacco at Elemental Forge. His table was actually right beside Brent, so we got to talk to him quite a bit. And he's in Colorado, not too far from my my stepdaughter, so I might go see him when I'm there. I'm actually going to be there in two weeks, so I might give him a call and see if we can eat somewhere for beer or something.
01:02:18
Speaker
um But he's got some amazing stuff. Does a lot of kitchen cu culinary stuff. He had some beautiful knives there. So go go give him a follow. Right now he's only only got 314 followers, which is unbelievable to me. Criminal. So go pump him up. and make it make it so that yeah let's get him to 316 at least okay i know we lost a bunch of listeners after this fucking train wreck so yeah um yeah i mean the the the fourth and fifth knives on his profile are incredible
01:02:59
Speaker
mean, I got to you know look over all the knives that he had there. Just some beautiful, beautiful work. So well go check him out. yeah This is who I wanted to call out. I had this i had this really great conversation with with Chris. I had a whole bunch of ah conversations with him. um And just a fantastic dude, just super knowledgeable. One thing that he had on this table that I really thought was cool was, and it just kind of tickled my profiling ah bone, is ah he had a ah few like heat-treated, forged
01:03:36
Speaker
um ah profiles done, some integrals. He had some bevels started on some of them. And i thought that was a really cool idea um to just even to attempt to try to move something that maybe you didn't get a chance to finish or you don't even tend to or whatnot. But I think it's kind of gets somebody that's maybe struggling, doesn't have the ability to have a a forge to forged anything out but it wants to kind of still get that look um i thought it was a really cool idea um and i i haven't seen it i've seen profiled knives and you know i think you took some heat treated blanks last year too but i've never seen any of the forged stuff that so you could still get that brute to forge finish um and um do a a hidden tang fit up so i thought that was really cool um
01:04:27
Speaker
And then I had some really, really great conversations just about forging in general and super knowledgeable, man. He was the way there's certain people for me anyways, that when they, they explain their process or or the way things go, um I can actually when he was explaining kind of like forging something out, like I could see the steel moving in my mind the way that, uh, and I could just, be because it's, you know, I'm a little bit more experienced down the road because there's lot of times it's like fucking the,
01:05:01
Speaker
uh, but yeah, he was, yeah, it was just super cool. So, um, yeah I told him definitely I'm to throw him in the maker support group and, uh, that we were going to give him a shout out and he was going to have at least one more person you know follow him because uh yeah we suck but yeah super cool dude um you know just another testament to to the uh to being uh, you know, at a table and, and meeting your people around, around you, you know?
01:05:31
Speaker
Um, so that was, that was really cool, uh, to see him. Yeah. And was, it was good to talk to him and hear, I like talking to makers and hearing, um like their method, thought not just methodical process, but he does things for a reason. He's like, yeah, I do this and this is why, and I do this. And and he he's ah we were comparing notes on being engineers and, you know, having to scratch that engineer itch sometimes on certain things about knife making. And yeah, it was cool to to hear some of his thoughts and process, you know, why he does things. That was cool. Yeah.
01:06:14
Speaker
Yeah. Super cool, dude. Super knowledgeable. Very good stuff. um Yeah. So I have, um when I was out rolling around, i had two people. and um ah ah Next week, I'll get to the ah to another one. But actually, there's quite a few, because that's kind of what I was on the hunt for, was some...
01:06:39
Speaker
other than instagram attraction you know like just to actually see and hold but as i was walking through the table i came across this guy um and it is a living good underscore grindhouse on um instagram colter living good uh he has 12 000.4 followers um but e makes predominantly culinary knives. He was a chef.
01:07:07
Speaker
um And I'm always, you know, if you have that experience, ah you know, to to work in a kitchen, i think he was a line cook at one time, and then you transfer over into making, you know, that's, that's where you're going to get the the best product, the usability of the tool. And I'm always going to listen a little bit more intently um to somebody that has that that kind of experience with with the use of the things that we're trying to make for people. But I, thing project in particular caught my attention and he did um a themed kitchen knife of uh of the dean from hell um dime bag daryl from pantera's uh guitar and that thing was absolutely freaking fantastic and beautiful
01:08:03
Speaker
um And he's got and the other thing, dude, he does all his own photography, real good presentation and pictures and stuff on on Instagram. um On top of that, but that the Dean from Hell themed knife was just fucking off the charts because my son. started playing the guitar. um it's been like a year and a half now. And then I think, yeah, i did share. We went to go see Matt, uh, uh, Metallica last year. And, um, while he started playing, he has somehow, um, Pantera Dimebag Daryl in particular, um, has he, that's his, that's his jam.
01:08:44
Speaker
So, um, I ended up buying him a a that Dean guitar, and that's what he plays. And um so it made me think of my son, like you were saying there. So I called him on FaceTime and sent him some pictures of it, and he was all stoked. So um shout out to Coulter for being creative and and having a theme.
01:09:07
Speaker
That is really cool and kind of thinking outside of the box. But in addition to that, dude, he has the, some so just absolutely insane um sculpturing and facets on his handles. Yeah. but Both of those two things. I i saw the the guitar knife first and then I saw the one, yeah, the sculpted one that you're talking about, which is in the second row of his, no, third row of his Instagram.
01:09:31
Speaker
Yeah. um But there, yeah, just but even... even the little hunters and skinners and are the, whatever other styles there are on there. They're just, it's fucking really good stuff and, and out of the box and, and just original and, and a sea of makers that, and then no disrespect to anybody else. Right. But I, I've, I had the same conversation with lots, like a lot of times with people talking about trying to like set yourself apart and you know, and really understanding that,
01:10:07
Speaker
there's you'd be hard pressed to find somebody come up with another original idea like something that hasn't been done right every time you think you've done it you're like oh my god i want to do that and then it's just like when you just you're looking to buy a car or something you're you you're into a tesla like you all a sudden you want to see a tesla or you want to buy a tesla and then you start you notice every damn tesla and there's a billion of them on the road right you just never saw them before So you're thinking about as something, a feature on a knife that you've never seen before, that's super original and then it's it's in your you mental ah and then you start noticing that it's you know it's everywhere. It wasn't on your radar before that. So when I see things that are like specifically out of the box, or it's it's impressive because there's a lot of talented people out there with a lot of great ideas. and I think it's now at this point for me anyways, it's always like the, I was telling people, I'm going to go look around and see what ideas I could steal from people, you know, cause I'm, you're, you're, you're, you're walking around and taking a bit of this and a bit of that and a bit of this and a bit of that. And like creating, trying to create something of your own, right.
01:11:14
Speaker
um Through inspiration or, you know, example of or whatever it is, but yeah. So anyway, shout out to Coulter for a really cool build that caught my eye and and doing amazing.
01:11:26
Speaker
and great work. So, uh, go give him and, Chris to follow, um, and tell the boys at triple T said, what's up?
01:11:36
Speaker
Yeah.

Future Plans and Memorable Experiences

01:11:37
Speaker
Good stuff. Good stuff. Um, I, did I did look at a whole bunch of folders while I was there. I was pretty keen on that. I've got a folder design that I'm going to be working on.
01:11:49
Speaker
might go see, uh, Mike V first, my Mike Fang, you know, um, my MasterSmith for some tutelage soon. But if you guys are interested in getting your knives out there, um go check out the Drop Point from the folks at SCIF workshop. If you're tired of fighting algorithms and just pushing knives through social media to let's face it, most of our followers are other knife makers. So if you want to get your your stuff out there to people who are actually buying. yeah get out of the circle, jerk.
01:12:28
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. but but um Go check out the Drop Point. It is a free newsletter. Let you connect to makers. Sorry. Connects makers to collectors, not just maker to maker. So go get your stuff in front of people that are actually going to buy it. It's free. Goes out every week. And it's from the Minds at Skiff workshop and they make the finest hardware for folders, which I'm pretty sure I need to put another order in. So I need some more bearings for some folks that are coming for a folder class later this year. So yeah, go check out the Drop Point. And while you're at it, if you need some folder hardware, go check out Skiff, the Skiff workshop for all your folder stuff.
01:13:21
Speaker
all righty what else anything else about blade texas or uh yeah the best part the best part oh yeah that's right sunday so the show is the best part but yeah you're right uh the show is friday saturday so you always kind of have depending when your plane leaves you have most of the day or part of the day sunday so i'll all credit to mr brent uh brent smith a bald man knife and tool said hey why don't we go to um uh what the hell is it called i don't know why um stockyard yes the fort worth stockyards and i've heard of this before but i kind of thought it was more of um or at least
01:14:09
Speaker
I didn't know it was the touristy part of it. I thought it was the scene in Landman where they go into the big arena and there's like bullfighting and then they throw some cows down there and you get to pick which one you want to buy or some shit. It is that, but that's like the commercial side. We didn't realize there was a whole street.
01:14:32
Speaker
Yeah, a whole, you know, they've made a whole tourist thing out of this. So that was really cool. they The longhorns come marching down the street, and you get to see all the cows, and then it's all...
01:14:46
Speaker
texas paraphernalia shops everywhere um yeah it was really cool john wayne museum uh that was super cool a lot of you know dudes dressed up like old cowboys riding horses you could do horse rides a lot of shops like endless shops that it's fucking the the thing i was blown away that the the very first area that we started in it was like a ah long covered tunnel almost, but with shops on both sides. And there's a set of train tracks down the middle.
01:15:22
Speaker
And I was just like, huh, they just must've built this shit around. And in Buck is sure as shit. If they didn't pull a big ass train right down the middle of that thing that you could ride on there as well. Yeah. And it's a real train. Like I did not expect like a train with people was going to like be strolling through there.
01:15:39
Speaker
yeah mean either. Uh, that was big train. Yeah. Uh, Yeah, and there's shit. You could buy sets of long horn, like actual horns and stuff. It was yeah just, it was like endless, man. I got caught up in that I would just say that in the first half hour, i was feeling like, damn, I wish I was from Texas because this shit's really cool. There was like all kinds of like the whole theme was awesome. um Just completely out of my wheelhouse from anything that I've ever you know been a part of. um
01:16:14
Speaker
And then by the time you get to the end of the street, you're like, fuck, I'm in Hawaii, right? You know, how many hulas or lays can you look at her? You know, it's it's the same stuff on on repeat. But it's it was a really good time. um And I think, where were we there? We were with Brent, Liz, Noah, and Kelsey ended up joining us. um And we all just...
01:16:37
Speaker
had it Had a great time, had lunch. I had the absolute 100% without exception. No, no, not a single item competition. The best pecan pie I have, pecan pie I have ever had in my life.
01:16:55
Speaker
That shit was delicious. It it like sent me to some... like I felt like i got high. like that's That's what it did to me. like The dopamine release that I had after the first bite, it like made me like rock back in my chair, swing my head like Stevie stevie Wonder. like I was gone. I was in another... like It was so good, dude. Like, I can't, I can't explain it.
01:17:21
Speaker
It was, it was like liquid sugar crack. And I love liquid sugar crack. Well, good, good. Oh, that's right that's it. Good, good. I don't like it. It's too sweet. but Come on. You're sour, so you need the sweetness. bell Good, good. The best I've ever had in my life. and i get Oh, good, good.
01:17:44
Speaker
Jesus, man. You tired? You want to go to bed? We can just end it. tired, actually. Fuck, man. Jeez, that's great. But anyways, yeah, that was that was super cool. I bought a ah a ah short sleeve pearl snap.
01:17:59
Speaker
shirt that had little cowboys on it that I'm super stoked about. I did run into the probably the coolest golf shirt I've ever seen in my life.
01:18:10
Speaker
And it was like a an an old Wrangler um button up with like the fucking ropes that go around on the pocket lines and everything. dude It was fucking and but it was a stretchy super golf shirt and they just did not have it in my size.
01:18:26
Speaker
Otherwise I would have I would went broke for sure. That would ah that would have took me over. Because i I bought some some Rob's Wildwood ah handle material.
01:18:39
Speaker
um i got this really unnecessarily, like complete to me it's it's unnecessary, but that little ah drill jig that I got. Mm-hmm.
01:18:50
Speaker
Um, I, I've been looking at that thing for like two years. I've seen it at Atlanta. I saw it last year. And then finally I was just like, you know, fuck it. I'm just going to get it. It was like 70 bucks or something like that, but it's just a little jig to put your scales and your knife on and get it up off of the, off of the, uh, the drill table. Cause I, uh, end I use the, the one, two, three blocks.
01:19:13
Speaker
Um, and yeah, clamp them down and shit like that. it's just a whole thing. So I, I don't know. um I hope it's the coolest thing ever. but So next year when I make a knife, I'll let you guys know.
01:19:26
Speaker
And then I got a ah this little ah light, battery-operated light that like goes to like a bazillion lumens. And...
01:19:37
Speaker
It has like a 10 hour battery life at the highest setting and like a billion hours of life at the lowest. You can control the ah the temperature of the light. So i I need another one for the Ameribraid setup. So it's magnetic. So I'll figure out how to how to hook that thing up. But that was it.
01:19:56
Speaker
That's really what I ended up with. so Best pecan pie ever, though. That shit was... Noah had some, too, and he he went over Nodland. It was like I was on in like like on a fentanyl fucking der-der-der trip, dude. it was It was so good. It was so good.
01:20:17
Speaker
Oh, yeah.

Humorous Airport Incident and Personal Reflections

01:20:18
Speaker
And then Dennis almost got fucking ah full body cavity searched because he tried to take a knife into the airport. Oh, yeah. That was just stupidity. I even told myself in the morning, make sure you put this in your in your suitcase.
01:20:31
Speaker
um like And I told myself, oh, yeah, I'll remember later. Fucking in the security line. then you were done you were You had just got through the security line. You're about to go into into the check like to start. no I was starting to take stuff off to put in the bin.
01:20:46
Speaker
and then He throws the knife up in the air. like To me, he shows me that he's got a knife. I'm like, bro, don't do that. They're going to tackle you right now. like and then he disappears for a half an hour.
01:20:58
Speaker
uh, yeah. yeah So what'd you end up doing? I had to go find a little, they always have these little kiosk things that you can mail stuff back. But of course I couldn't find it. And then I asked three people cause nobody knew where it was. And then I got there and there was another guy doing exactly the same thing with a pocket knife. life is tougher when you're stupid bro yeah yeah so hopefully i'll get it in another two weeks they said like you know 18 days or whatever uh but oh well one other person that i ran into almost right away as soon as i got there was martin huber and i did
01:21:37
Speaker
between Martin and Trey from Third Hill Customs, I did get a bunch of info, a bunch of my questions answered about Austria on like bringing knives in and traveling knives and blah, blah, blah, blah what to do when they were going to go and places they were going to see other than the knife show. So looking forward to that. I did bring Martin. Hey, you weren't there for that. I did bring Martin a Canadian flag to, oh were you there when I gave it to him? I didn't i have no idea what it's about.
01:22:05
Speaker
i don't, I, I, I'm not in on that, but I did see you give it to him. He was happy. He was on hustle and grind. He was talking about how he has an American flag hung up and an Austria flag in his shop. And he's like, yeah, now people are going to start sending me, ah you know, and he made a point of talking about it And he said, yeah, now people are going to start sending me flags. So I brought him a Canadian flag and to put up in his shop.
01:22:28
Speaker
Martin, and I'm going to be watching your videos and expecting to see that flag. So, uh, very prominently martin don't put it up that'd be the the best joke i've uh yeah that would be awesome you just hang it hang it up in the package as it is with the maple fucking facing towards the wall that'd be fantastic in the bag oh that would be sweet oh man don't listen to him
01:22:59
Speaker
He did get the little Latino boy shirt, so that was cool. Yeah. I got a couple things and just to keep you awake and and do, but I had two really... One maker that I am just... don't want to say proud of but like...
01:23:16
Speaker
I am, i am proud. It just, it gives me hope for, for the future. um And, and I'm very grateful for what you can to say that these, these, these people, these younger, the younger generation are, are doing, this thing and they have found it so soon for somebody like me that found it, you know, as my beard was already white. Um, but just, just tipping tip. Well, you were like, your hair was white when you were like 20, dude, that doesn't count.
01:23:44
Speaker
So, uh, but, uh, the, uh, just to, just a special shout out to, Elijah white from working hands forge. Um, that he's just an outstanding young man um and is doing incredible work always trying to get feedback on what he's doing i watched him get um have somebody critique his knives and uh you know ah again i think when you're asking for feedback on knives um you know hey you have to ask for it right that's that's rule number one like so and he purposely sought out this this feedback um
01:24:22
Speaker
And it's happened to me last Atlanta um when I asked somebody to look at a knife and then somebody walked up during that. And the one of the things that they were telling me that as ah as a ah bit of feedback that they would do differently, um the other gentleman said, well, you know, I don't know if that's necessarily true, right? Because there's there's you mix up critique with preference.
01:24:52
Speaker
Right. And there's a, there's a, there's a very distinct line with what it isn't functional or is wrong from the making standpoint versus what you don't like to see on a knife. Right. Yeah. Um, and, and that's a, that's a super hard line to to distinguish. um But as I was watching him go through there, there was some of that, you know, like you could do better here or do better that. But predominantly, like, you know, the guy looked at me and he's like, this fucking kid's got it. You know, like everything I'm really now I'm like nitpicking him on is just like, you know, my preference type stuff. And he was very specific to say that, which I really appreciate it.
01:25:28
Speaker
And especially, you know, when you're giving that feedback to to a younger maker too as well, right? Because it's it's got to be constructive and and and done right. I would hope that it's done that way anyways.
01:25:39
Speaker
um But yeah, anyways, just always looking to get better. 19, killing it has just a... the the salesmanship. I saw him, you know, somebody even working with a customer.
01:25:51
Speaker
ah He hit him with a, yeah, you know, well, he looks like you really wanted Why don't I just go ahead and box that up for you? And was like, boom, boom, get him, dude. I went back and checked on it. And he said the guy came back and bought the knife from him. So I was like, just, that's awesome, man. I just, I don't know, man. I, the, the inspiration comes from, you know, many different angles and, and, and that kid just, he got me fired up and I just want to tip my cap to him. And then I went over there to try to, to, to, to support him. And and the little fucker ended up giving me a strop and wouldn't take my money. And I was very, very pissed off about that, but I'm super grateful. It was a very sweet gesture and and I very much appreciate it And I will use it and, and, and cherish that thing. So, and then in addition to that,
01:26:39
Speaker
um I had a, a gentleman come up to us in um in Atlanta and, And was, celebrate my clean date, May 2nd. Um, and I had just celebrated 18 years, um, clean, sober, whatever the hell you want to say. and I always go back and forth on whether I want talk about that stuff. Um, because, you know, it's, it, You don't do it for praise or to talk about me. Part of that whole process is just hoping that maybe somebody needs to hear that. And I don't know when it was, but it was at Atlanta.
01:27:19
Speaker
And um the guy came up, talked to me and shared, you know, and said, hey, thank you for... for sharing with that. I'm, you know, just starting out and blah blah, blah, blah, blah. And that stuff will always stick with me. So luckily that, that gentleman came up to Brent's table and I was like, Hey man, I remember you from, you know, and he shared me that he's still, still going strong and, um, and sent me just a very, very, very nice message that I read on the plane home. And, uh, I just, as,
01:27:51
Speaker
that what I want to say is that you, you, people often think that the, it's the same thing I'm saying thinking, saying about with Elijah, right? We think that experience is where we go for the inspiration, the knowledge, uh, in, in a lot of things, right. But people that have experience and the same goes with people in recovery, right. That just because you have a lot of clean time doesn't necessarily mean that you have all the answers in your you're fixed, right? That same thing for you, like, you know, experience maker, master, people come to you for all these things. But there's a point where I, as somebody that's been in recovery a long time, I'm still a person, I still need help, I still need, you know, things, right? You're still looking for inspiration, you're still looking for knowledge, you're still trying to gain. And it's oftentimes the people that are newer in the journey that provide that.
01:28:38
Speaker
for for me anyways, that inspiration. And and i just, it's it's it's anonymous type thing here. So I just very clearly want to say that if there's any missing misconception or, or an understanding that, you know, that I somehow helped this guy, I could tell you that that interaction 100% affected me in in a more positive way um this weekend. um Because I find myself, like I said, at a, you know, around things that, you know, aren't very conducive to, to what I should be doing sometimes. But, and,
01:29:18
Speaker
all of that stuff to just to say that, you know, it's about sharing the information. It's about giving back and it's about just kind of planting seeds. And, and that's why i continue to do it. That's why I do it. That's why I say the things that I say.
