Denis Tyrell: So I got it the first thing on everyone's mind. Actually, we'll save that for a few things. We got a few things to to talk about. First, we just finished a long weekend for Memorial Day. so hopefully everyone enjoyed the long weekend and...
Denis Tyrell: you know, thought about the reason for the holiday. um i was a bachelor all weekend because um Kim was at Universal Studios. How was your long weekend?
Bald Man: All right. um It was pretty good. It was actually my wife's birthday on Friday.
Denis Tyrell: Oh, all right.
Bald Man: kind of, we went to a hockey game Friday night and then Saturday we drove over to Fort Lauderdale, Miami area and hung out all day and then headed back in the evening. So yeah, we had a full weekend and then Memorial Day, we just kind of relaxed and got some rest and did some yard work. So There was that.
Denis Tyrell: Nice. Nice. I work all weekend. ah
Bald Man: I feel like a lot of people in our community are working around the clock right now.
Denis Tyrell: There's that.
Denis Tyrell: ah a Funny thing is um I am more ahead than I've ever been for blade show.
Bald Man: Yeah. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Last week, middle of last week, I finished what I thought was going to be my last knife. And I was like contemplating, Oh, I'm just going to do some other shit. And then, I got to bug up my ass Friday to start a new folder, which is now going to be complete tomorrow. And I got another knife. So I'm like way ahead of the curve.
Bald Man: All right.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Bald Man: That's how it always goes, right?
Denis Tyrell: That's,
Bald Man: Whenever you hit your deadline and you've got everything, then all of a sudden you get really antsy and you feel like um I could squeeze in one more or there's something else that I could tweak, whether it's display or maybe do another sheath or fix little stuff here and there.
Bald Man: So yeah, there's always something last minute that makes you push it to crunch time.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, i'm I'm actually really um really happy in lot of things. I did a whole new display this year that um my video this Thursday is going to be about that display and just talk about.
Bald Man: OK, good.
Denis Tyrell: I've had a few people talk to me about, you know, what should I do for my display at Blade Show? And i've I know you've tried all kinds of things and I'm taking a
Bald Man: who
Denis Tyrell: one page from your book and I've got the overhead sign, which I, I don't know why I slept so long on that one, but yeah, banners and must, the table cover I think is the like ground zero.
Bald Man: Yeah, banner is a must.
Denis Tyrell: You need the nice table cover that has your logo on it.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Um, but I think the banner is super helpful, especially at blade show when there's 900 tables, uh, you need to stand out. Hmm.
Bald Man: Yeah, people always do the, I'm going to keep walking and I'll come back. And if they can't find you, they're not coming back.
Denis Tyrell: exactly yeah yeah and um
Bald Man: Good. So you're working on full, a whole new display or just adding a few things. What's going on?
Denis Tyrell: so the first thing i'm going to do which i i've said i was going to do in the past and just never got around and just never did it but this year i'm definitely jacking the table up
Bald Man: Okay.
Denis Tyrell: So, cause the, all those tables, if you guys don't know, all those tables have, um, feet to go down. So you can actually jack the table up like six to eight inches. That's the first thing we're going to do.
Denis Tyrell: So I want the table to be higher.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Almost. I mean, I'm going to get it to go as high as it can go. Uh, cause I would prefer it be standing height because I don't, I hate, I think it's a terror.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: And I know you agree with this. It's a terrible idea to be sitting at your table and talking to people.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Right. You need to be standing up.
Bald Man: And it's, it's,
Denis Tyrell: but You need to be eye to eye.
Bald Man: Yeah, you need to be eye to eye. It's also visually people are able to see what you have better when they're there at the table.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Right.
Bald Man: So that's good.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. So I'm jacking everything up and i made, see, I'm flying on a plane.
Bald Man: Moving the table up.
Denis Tyrell: So part of it is what can I do that I can still fit in the suitcase? So I made their 24 inch, I'm using my hands that you can't see 24 inches long and they're up about, um, about a foot off the top of the table.
Bald Man: Okay.
Denis Tyrell: And then it's a bar that has two lines of magnets in it with felt over top and it's at a 45 degree angle.
Bald Man: Perfect.
Denis Tyrell: So all the knives are going to be stuck and there's two of those.
Bald Man: Awesome.
Denis Tyrell: So all the buoy knives are on one, all the folders are on another. And I made a really fancy display for the big dagger.
Bald Man: OK.
Denis Tyrell: And then the chef knives and other, the low end stuff will actually be down on the table. So everything is up visible from a ways away.
Bald Man: Good.
Denis Tyrell: Um, now with the signage and everything. So I'm happy.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Plus got a new table this year. So happy about that too.
Bald Man: Good.
Denis Tyrell: We're closer to the front.
Bald Man: Yeah, so you moved yeah you moved further up to the front from where you've been the last few years?
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, where we used to be at 23.0, which was actually a nice location for traffic because it's kind of on like a corner.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: um Not exactly on a corner, but there's two of those big um hallways or aisleways, whatever, which was right.
Bald Man: Right. It's kind of a thoroughfare.
Denis Tyrell: But I think it'll be nicer to be closer to the front. So now I'm at the exact same column. I'm still 0, but I'm 7.0. So quite a bit closer to the front.
Bald Man: Okay. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: um I am surrounded by except for one guy who's the guy right behind me, everyone's a master smith around me. but So um I guess I'm in good company, scale
Bald Man: Oh, all right.
Bald Man: So yeah, that's where that's where you need to be because those are the customers that you're looking for.
Denis Tyrell: Right.
Bald Man: um The customers that come to the show looking for the ABS knives. That's where you want to be at.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. So I'm kind of in that,
Bald Man: For me, that would be a nice
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Well, I think you'll do well wherever you are. But um yeah, I am in the kind of the ABS area, which is where I wanted to be.
Bald Man: Yeah, good, good. Yeah, I think for the table displays, i always really like the tiered displays. I like your idea of doing tiered. I've tried that in the past, and the thing that frustrated me with the tiered setup that I had, I think the first year, maybe the second year at Blade Show, but definitely the first, I made these big displays, and the problem I had was they had cubbies where you would set the knives, so like a little shelf.
Denis Tyrell: I remember. Yeah.
Bald Man: um And the the frustrating thing for me was people would come up to the table and ask a question about the knife and point at it, and I would have to crane my neck around to be able to see which knife they were talking about. So that was ah a pinch point for me, but I really do like the tiered stuff. so And those boards, magnetic boards, are are a really solid move. So yeah, it'll be cool.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, plus I can see them because the board is only three inches thick, so and I can see over it because they're at a 45-degree angle.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Right.
Denis Tyrell: So if they're pointing at something, can still see it, um which is – yeah, i I love the displays.
Bald Man: Right. Good.
Denis Tyrell: They're also very light, um and they're – you know obviously they dismantle and they will fit in a suitcase because they're only 24 inches. um So I haven't weighed my suitcase yet when they're in it, but um yeah, hopefully everything goes well.
Bald Man: Good. Yeah, I feel like every show I change my display somehow. i always I always feel like there's something I could tweak better. you know I didn't like what I did in Texas, which that was moving back to a table and So I tried something and I needed to tweak it. And so I tweaked it a little bit and made some new displays, which funny you're talking about going to like nice wood and finished and all that. My displays this this year and Atlanta are going to be cardboard. Yeah.
Bald Man: I, and the reason I did that, I always did 3D printed, three d printed um little stands for the knives. And i don't know, I have a new t-shirt and stickers and everything that I started doing, which are the the tagline is my knife has seen some things.
Bald Man: And then below the image, it says mostly cardboard or mostly boxes.
Denis Tyrell: I like it.
Bald Man: ah Um, so I felt like I'm like, oh, well, this fits perfect. I was going to 3d print some little boxes out of some brown filament to look like boxes.
Bald Man: And then I was like, why don't I just design some cardboard cutouts that I can laser cut and display everything there. So that's what I'm doing for this year.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, and it's cheaper.
Bald Man: It's cheaper and it's fun because it's going to go with the theme. So I'm into it. We'll see if I do it again next year, but I'm definitely into it this year.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, and you're driving, right? So you can, even if it was something big and bulky, you have the luxury of just throwing in the car. um
Bald Man: Yeah, I'll be driving. Uh, but you know, I got four people in the car driving with me, so we're going to be loaded up. We're bringing a truck this year.
Denis Tyrell: yeah Four people with you?
Bald Man: Uh, sorry, three people. So total of four of us.
Denis Tyrell: Okay, it was going to say, yeah, you and Therese, yeah.
Bald Man: Yeah. So yeah, but I bring a mini fridge and all that stuff. So, um, and because I have the booth, I have to bring, you know, when you get a booth, they don't provide you a chairs, a table.
Bald Man: It's just a 10 by 10 box. Um,
Denis Tyrell: So they don't even give you a table?
Bald Man: Not even a table. So I have to bring my whole display, which is I can tear it down and packs small for what it is.
Denis Tyrell: wow
Bald Man: that's a total It's an eight foot display. So I took a eight foot butcher block and cut it into two pieces. So I have two four foot four by 24, you know, 48 by 24 butcher block tables. And then I got some shelving. Um, and cut it down to the height that I wanted it at. And I just use that shelving and make all that. So it it looks like a nice, you know, it turns out to be a really nice table display. Uh, gets you up. So yeah, we're high. I think I forget what it was. I, I want to say it's like 36 inches high, maybe a little higher. Um, so we're, you can literally stand and rest your arms on.
Bald Man: Um, so we're right there.
Denis Tyrell: i love that the the only the only down i wish see if i was um if i was driving or if yeah i'm i doubt we'd do it but if like there was a target nearby would go find one of those standing chairs um that that that would be nice because you know you know that we don't have talking right those really really tall like a director's chair that would be perfect
Bald Man: Yeah, it's,
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Because then you could kind of lean on it and it doesn't. Because if I sit down, the table is going to be like up here.
Bald Man: We... Yeah, I didn't bring chairs last year, and so we did a Walmart run Thursday night last year um and got some folding stools.
Bald Man: So they were tall enough, and they're easy enough to get in and out of, so you can sit down when you need to and you're still eye level because you're basically standing in them anyway. So definitely be bringing those again this year.
Denis Tyrell: Hmm.
Bald Man: But yeah, the booth, they they give you nothing. They give you just a 10 by 10 box.
Denis Tyrell: Wow. And it's how much? Like $1,200 or something crazy?
Bald Man: It's a little more than that.
Denis Tyrell: Wow.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Jesus. You're scaring the shit out of me.
Bald Man: Yeah. But it's so worth it. Again, so I bring ah i bring a crew with me and that crew, they're all in the knives. So they always go and buy stuff.
Bald Man: And you know how it is, even with a table, you know, when you go get handle material and whatever, you're trying to store it under the table.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Tons of crap under the table.
Bald Man: Yeah. And so this is great because it's kind of a landing spot where we can, know, There's plenty of room to put stuff. And when you're, you know, one of the guys goes and gets lunch, we can eat lunch away from the table back in the back. And yeah, it works out great.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that's good. So how's the, how's the actual prep for the, uh, the show going like knife, knife, knife stuff, actual stuff to sell.
Bald Man: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, the knives are going good. i have one knife to finish up. i kind of I talked to you about it earlier. Actually, last week I was making a sheath for it and that didn't turn out well. So I am not a leather leather worker. So I got really frustrated with that sheath. So I'm still figuring out what I'm going do for that. But other than that, I have all the knives done, just that one for the sheath. And like I said, now I'm getting antsy and
Bald Man: trying to figure everything else out, any other little extras that I can do.
Denis Tyrell: You got a week. I'm surprised you're not banging away three more knives or something.
Bald Man: Yeah, i I just decided to kind of... First of all, this is the first year that I haven't had two jobs um and haven't had to really hustle through that. This is also the... So the last two years um for... ah May is always a busy month for us. So I usually try to... The last couple years, i've I've tried to wrap up everything before May ah so that I can spend time... you know my My son's birthday is in the beginning of May.
Bald Man: Our anniversary is in May. My wife's birthday, again, was just this last week. so And then Mother's Day is thrown in there. So I try to... actually be present with family during that. And so that's been a struggle. But the previous two years, both of my kids also graduated high school in May.
Bald Man: So we had a lot going on.
Denis Tyrell: busy
Bald Man: So this year is the first year that has been slower from the fact of not having multiple jobs and also not having a graduation and family coming into town and all that stuff to deal with. So, yeah, it's been a little more relaxing this year.
Denis Tyrell: yeah well i i was trying to get a jump on things um because it's my anniversary this weekend um So we're going away, not, we're only going away Sunday, Monday.
Denis Tyrell: um But I didn't want to, you know, I didn't want to be down to the wire, you know, so why I'm happy where I'm at.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: I, you know, I've, I've procrastinated and I've got sharpening to do on like, I feel like a dozen knives, but other than that, everything's and the, the folder that, that I'm doing, but,
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Yeah. Make sure you get those knives sharpened. I forgot to sharpen a couple of knives one year and I got
Denis Tyrell: Oh, really?
Bald Man: Oh yeah. I forgot to sharpen a couple knives. Luckily i had brought, uh, actually one of my buddies, John, that comes with me, he, he brought his sharpener with him. Um, and so we were sitting in the hotel room and sharpening knives on, um one of the evenings while we were just hanging out.
Denis Tyrell: You just take take it over to the one of the sharpening booths at the show.
Bald Man: Yeah, I shouldn't have done that. Yeah. They probably would have laughed at me.
Denis Tyrell: Have them do it. Yeah.
Bald Man: Yeah. That's, that's what you're doing. Going run some over?
Denis Tyrell: maybe no i'll finish uh before i go but you mentioned sheets um i have a video on sheets coming it was supposed to be last saturday but i don't know it got busy so it'll be this saturday when that video will be on doing sheets with um inlays and gotta say i've always thought my sheets were a little you know i wouldn't say novice but
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: not up to the par of maybe the knives. This year, I'm very happy with the sheaths. And all my sheaths have inlay.
Bald Man: Good.
Denis Tyrell: um I did them all with inlay, which I kind of think... is almost like a cheat code because once you do the sheath with an inlay, then you don't have to worry about the stamping and all that other bullshit.
Denis Tyrell: Like, I don't really love stamping sheaths, but slapping on some Cayman skin or some, I really love that ostrich skin that I got at Texas, which was super cheap and it looks amazing.
Bald Man: okay yeah
Denis Tyrell: It was like 15 bucks for one that's like, whatever it was, 16 inches long. Um,
Bald Man: Wow.
Denis Tyrell: and uh so i did a couple with that i'm really happy with how the sheaths turned out um
Bald Man: Yeah, no, that's a good, that does sound like kind of a cheat code for adding texture and depth without having to spend a bunch of tooling time.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was, I thought it was so many, I mean, I don't have a sewing machine, so it's twice as much sewing, which I don't mind. It's like the sewing is a little therapeutic to me.
Denis Tyrell: um But, you know, what does it take me? An hour total to do all of the stitching on these sheaths with um with the inlay.
Bald Man: yeah
Denis Tyrell: um But it turns out, I showed you one. I thought it they turned out pretty nice.
Bald Man: oh yeah yeah that was you showed me that one and then i immediately threw mine in the trash thanks
Denis Tyrell: uh uh but i was happy how those came out so um yeah this and and this year i mentioned the last show um this year's the first year i've ever done a pre-sale before the show and um which i released to my patreon members only
Bald Man: Oh, okay.
Denis Tyrell: and uh that went really well um sold two of the highest end knives two of the lowest end knives and then one in the middle which was great um so it's nice to go into the show with a quarter of what i was going to bring already sold um and uh
Bald Man: Good.
Bald Man: Yeah. so are those pre-sales or those they're picking them up at blade show or
Denis Tyrell: I'm still bringing them to the show for display, but they're, they're sold like they will, and they know that they were, they will ship after the show.
Bald Man: You're going
Bald Man: to. OK.
Bald Man: All right, great.
Bald Man: Oh, good.
Denis Tyrell: And the nice thing is two of them, two of them have Kydex sheets, which I haven't made yet. So I'm not going to do it yet until I get home. Um, so in fact, the two low end ones, I'm not even going to bring, but the other high end ones for, uh,
Bald Man: Yeah. Yeah, I think ah having been to Blade Show before I was making knives as a collector, there's the hype around um getting Blade Show exclusives, which is a real thing, and it happens.
Denis Tyrell: Thank you.
Bald Man: Yeah. And it's still there even today for me, for, you know, some of those, some of the makers that it's hard, you can't get their stuff or you're on a two or three year waiting list.
Bald Man: It's great. um I found for smaller makers when you're, you're I just found that I would, I started making stuff the first couple of years I would make and I would hold back certain things and they would always sell at blade show. But I,
Bald Man: I just got to where I was like, you know what? I have so many people that follow me, whether they're email subscribers, so many good customers that ah don't go to Blade Show.
Denis Tyrell: Thank you.
Bald Man: So I just started selling everything. You know, as I make it, it goes on the website. And if it gets snatched up before Blade Show, then great. i'll I'll take it.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Yeah.
Bald Man: A sale is a sale.
Denis Tyrell: Everywhere all the time.
Bald Man: Yep.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Bald Man: A sale is a sale.
Denis Tyrell: I'm I, and I used to keep everything. Oh, like this is for like the, shoot like to, for the show. Um, and then last year, especially I came home with almost everything.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Um, and then sold them to some of my, my usual buyers, three days after the show. and I'm like, this year, and I'm like, I'm just going to do that first so that everything I make at the show is just kind of, you know, bonus money kind of thing.
Denis Tyrell: But I tell you, i' look I'm looking forward to seeing all of our friends and acquaintances there.
Bald Man: Yeah. Well, that's good, man.

Denis Tyrell: Right. out her I remember having those.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Those were pretty good.

Denis Tyrell: man. So, uh, yeah, I got sharpening. Oh, one thing, the other thing I did this year was, man, I was on top of things. I had all my knives laid out on the table and I thought I got them all out. I should take each one and do a little video of each one and then schedule IG reels or posts every day before the show.
Denis Tyrell: So I feel like, wow, yeah, I'm like on the ball.
Bald Man: Wow.
Denis Tyrell: So, uh,
Bald Man: Oh my goodness.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I got every day until Blade Show, I've got one or multiple um posts scheduled that now I don't have to think about and remember to do. So, you get yeah.
Bald Man: Man, that's some great thinking. I'll have to do that with all my free time this coming week.
Denis Tyrell: You're free. you No, you won't have free time. Give me a break. You'll figure out some way to fill it.
Bald Man: I got Yeah, I'm going to create a bunch of content because I got one sheath to make and I'll probably throw that one away too.
Denis Tyrell: do it.

Bald Man: yeah yeah, I'll be heading up Wednesday and we're going to stop a couple hours away and ah away from the venue and Hang out for the night and then head up there Thursday mid-morning probably. We'll get there.
Denis Tyrell: yeah uh our flight leaves here at 9 20 p.m and we with the time change when we get to atlanta it will be 5 a.m m i'm not happy about this

Denis Tyrell: yeah uh no he no he won't i haven't told i haven't told him and i'm gonna make him hear it now um i haven't told him yet but i upgraded my seat

Denis Tyrell: Well, he bought his own fucking seat. We usually never sit together anyway because by the time he books, we're usually like a row apart. But this time, you know what row I'm in? i am in seat 1A.

Denis Tyrell: That's right. i got a I upgraded first class with a nice reclining chair because i want to sleep. I don't want to be dead when we get there. So I was going to sit at the airport and they'd be calling the seats and I'd be like, oh,
Bald Man: Oh, man.
Denis Tyrell: It's time to board. He'd be like, oh, they're boarding first class, dumbass. I'm like, see you later, motherfucker.
Bald Man: ah
Bald Man: Oh, that's going to be great. So you're going to be well-rested and he's going to be all cramped.
Denis Tyrell: Well, yeah, he's back in steerage like like with 32 or something ridiculous.
Bald Man: They put him in the bathroom.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, see, he's the wiper.
Bald Man: don't know.
Denis Tyrell: i i I usually cannot sleep on planes. Like I might get, you know, a 10 minute, you know, blink of a power nap, but I'm hoping with the extra wide seat and the might have a few beverages that um that I'll be able to be able to sleep.
Bald Man: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Um, so, uh, you know I was just prepping stuff for the course to make sure that, you know, we're a little more organized and we can definitely do it in two days.
Denis Tyrell: Um, cause, yeah, I don't want it. I don't want those guys stuck in the shop for four days or something ridiculous like that.
Bald Man: Right. Well, that'll be good having Toby over with his son.
Denis Tyrell: So I like, yeah, yeah.
Bald Man: That'll be, I'm sure that'll be a blast. Do you have any other plans other than making knives with them?
Denis Tyrell: Uh,
Denis Tyrell: Um, we are, um Jared's actually in North Carolina for the first couple of days. So that's when we'll probably do at least one. I think the Monday we're just gonna take it like we get home Sunday night late.
Denis Tyrell: I think Monday we're just gonna take it easy, lie by the pool, have some drinks, make, make some barbecue, that kind of stuff.
Bald Man: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Maybe we'll go in the shop in the afternoon for a couple hours just to kind of get them going.
Bald Man: Yeah. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: But then I think Tuesday, the full day, we're going to spend in the shop. And then Wednesday is when I think Jared flies home. I don't know if he's going to. He might stop by for dinner or something like that.
Denis Tyrell: And um yeah, so I don't know what we're going to do Wednesday, Thursday, because that's Thursday. Jared's around. So I'm not sure if we're going to have a shop day or what we're going to do.
Denis Tyrell: Friday, we're actually going to Alcatraz.
Bald Man: Yeah. Oh, that'll be cool.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, actually pre-booked the Alcatraz tickets. So um did that. I want to take um Toby and Leland out on the jet skis if I ever actually get them back out of the shop for the fucking fourth time. um
Bald Man: So that debacle's still going on.
Denis Tyrell: So, yeah. ah well I don't remember what I said on the air last time, but... Cause like I was telling the whole time, like, it's really odd. Yeah. You're a car guy. It's really odd that the engine is dying.
Denis Tyrell: Like, like cylinders, like the pistons are fusing in the cylinders. Like to me, that's like lack of oil.
Bald Man: no Oh, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: And I, so and I said this to them, like, like you fixed it twice and it's happened where you put a whole new engine in. It happened.
Denis Tyrell: Then you redid the cylinders, like reboard the cylinders, put new pistons and all that stuff in. It happened again. and I'm like, maybe you guys should check the oil delivery system.
Denis Tyrell: um
Bald Man: Oh, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: So, yeah, now they checked it and they think it's the oil pump. And I'm like, pretty sure. I'm not a car guy, but I'm pretty sure I said that like two episodes ago. Well,
Bald Man: Yeah, that's a, that's, I mean, you should check oil pressure right away.
Denis Tyrell: well the
Bald Man: soon as you, as soon as you rebuild an engine, that's the one thing. Does it have oil pressure?
Denis Tyrell: They said they checked they check the oil pressure, but I don't know if the pump's kicking out intermittently.
Bald Man: Hmm.
Denis Tyrell: It sounds like what's happening. and Because then they said, oh, there's they found air in the lines, but they bled they know they bled the lines before, and they took it out and tested it.
Bald Man: Hmm.
Denis Tyrell: So I think it's some intermittent oil pump problem. So anyway, they're replacing the oil pump.
Bald Man: Interesting.
Denis Tyrell: Free of charge.
Bald Man: All right.
Denis Tyrell: Because they've messed it up this many times. I mean, there um they're competent guys. I think this is just bad luck.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: They're they're taking a bath on this for sure.

Denis Tyrell: Like, there this is definitely costing them money.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Cost me a shit ton of money. So I would like these to have them done when... So I'm going hit them up tomorrow and see if I can nudge them along. So...
Bald Man: Yeah, hopefully that gets squared away before Toby shows up and then gets a wave runner time.
Denis Tyrell: yeah i think that would be fun to uh take him out on the delta uh that's a definitely a california experience to go jet skiing on the delta but yeah but

Denis Tyrell: yeah it will be it will be busy i mean it it will and it won't because it's just kind of i'll be making a folder along with them but it's like that we' we'll probably have

Denis Tyrell: like two days in the shop and then whatever else they want to do. Maybe I'll take them shooting. Maybe we'll, you know, I don't know what we'll do. Shooting is probably on the list. I think, uh, we'll, uh, there's a gun range, like, like two miles from my house. So that's, uh, that's high on the list. I think,
Bald Man: Yeah. Last time Toby came to Florida, I think he went shooting, right?
Denis Tyrell: uh, I think he did. Yeah. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: so uh i think i mentioned it to him and he sounded interested to go to go shooting so we'll uh take him to go uh go trap shooting yeah um

Bald Man: Yeah, i will it's been a while since I had looked on their website, and just this week I was looking on their website to see what they had in stock. and Again, going back to like, am I going to bring something else to Blade Show? um Over the weekend, I was going over their website thinking about ordering a bar of steel, getting it here you know overnighted just to knock out a couple. and They have some really cool patterns that they didn't have the last time I looked on there, and Um, you know they have their, um, what's their, um their low layer stuff that they've been doing.
Denis Tyrell: know Yeah.
Bald Man: Um, I forget what they call that, but, uh, they have those, but man, they've got some, like some of the high layer patterns, um, that I hadn't seen before and just killer, killer steel, killer billets over there.
Denis Tyrell: I don't know what it's called.
Bald Man: So, uh, I was super tempted to pull the trigger, but I knew I wouldn't be able to see it before blade show see those knives actually get done so i will definitely be picking some up at blade show
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I actually did ah one of the folders I did, which i I, that was a whole debacle when I messed up that kumai because I'm an idiot. um You heard that when I was like, oh, I'll just straighten it with a hammer.
Denis Tyrell: Duh. it Cracked the whole thing right down the the the seam. um But one of the replacements, I just went into the drawer and pulled out a piece of Damascus that was like,
Denis Tyrell: It said 60 layer on it and, but they're totally straight layers and made a folder blade out of it. And actually I think it came out really cool, but it's low layer, but yeah, I thought it was interesting.
Denis Tyrell: You'll see it at the show, but, um, you know haven't done a low layer like that.
Bald Man: Yeah, cool. Some of the low layers look really good when they're just those really fat, bold lines that really separate. I like those.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Yeah, I agree. But, um, Yeah, I'm looking forward to the show, to see all my friends. um Yeah, it it'll it'll be a good time.
Denis Tyrell: um What was I going to say? oh I had a note here i'm going to I'm going to make fun of my wife here, see if she listens.

Denis Tyrell: Would she... She's I you guys have universal universal studios there, but I think you guys have different rides than the one in California.

Denis Tyrell: But the one here has got a new mummy ride. And I took my boys before Parker, um you know, when he was enlisting, we went on a little vacation for a weekend, you know, as a, you know, me and the boys before he got shipped off kind of thing. And we went to Universal Studios and we went on this ride.
Denis Tyrell: and I remember it being a decent ride, but I don't remember much of it. And she asked me, is it scary? I'm like, I don't remember it that much. It couldn't have been that scary. She sends me a text right after the ride and said, oh my God, that's the scariest ride ever.
Denis Tyrell: And she said, you know, the pictures, you know, when they take the picture,
Bald Man: Yeah, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: I should put this in there. I'll get Jared to put it in the show. She'll kill me. um The look on her face is the funniest picture ever.
Bald Man: She was terrified.
Denis Tyrell: Terrified. And, you know, grown woman terrified of the mummy ride at Universal Studios.

Bald Man: oh my goodness. Yeah, going to have to put that up.

Bald Man: man. I love blade show. I love going. um I love just, I love being able to just meet people, uh, see the same people say, you know, people we see every year, uh, friends that you get to catch up with. Um,
Bald Man: you know going it's going to be good i'm sure we're going to go to neil's place uh thursday night spend some time there hang out that's always a good time and you know the pit most other nights just hanging out in the pit um you know that's that's always a good experience hanging out um yeah and then I really do enjoy talking to whether they're customers or just people there hanging out at blade show that come by the the booth.
Denis Tyrell: Yep. yep
Bald Man: I get a kick out of it. I have a lot of fun. Just I, one of the things we have always done is just to ask people what they came there for and if it's their first year and all that good stuff and just get to know them and hear what knives they're into and whether it's folders or fixed blades and or swords or battle songs.
Bald Man: And I always like to see, you know, I remember, I'll never forget the first couple of years going to blade show as a collector, you always have in mind what you're going there for.
Denis Tyrell: Thank you.
Bald Man: And you want to see certain things. you know that's why we started going, me and my friends. We started going because there were no big knife stores down here that we could go and actually, you know, get our hands on the knives.
Bald Man: So we went to Blade Show specifically for that. We were like, hey, this is the one place that if there's a knife you've seen that you're on the fence, you know, i don't want to spend, you know, four or five, six hundred dollars on something that I might not like.
Bald Man: I can actually hold it. I can check out the if it's a folder, the action, see how it feels in hand, see how the blades ground like all that stuff. um And so I always like to ask people like, what would you do? Did you come here looking for something? And if they did, okay, did you did you find it? Yeah. Did you buy it?
Bald Man: Yeah, I bought it. Well, then why are you not showing it to us? So we always have people just pull knives out and show us the knives that they were super excited to find and get. And that's cool to me to see people light up. And last year, I specifically remember there was a a grandfather, a son, and a grandson. And the grandfather had been coming to Blade Show since I think the beginning, like the first year or two that it was there.
Bald Man: um And so it was like a, you know, guy's trip that they did and it was the grandson's first year coming. And so it was just really cool.
Denis Tyrell: That's awesome.
Bald Man: You know, you get to see that it's, it's, it's bigger than just a bunch of sweaty, smelly guys, you know, Googling over knives. And it's actually, you know, what what we came for, which is kind of checking out knives, but also meeting people. And um i also, the first couple of years we came, we would stand in line waiting to get into the show.
Bald Man: And in those lines, specifically the first year, there were two guys standing in front of us. And, you know, we were standing in line for like three hours waiting to get in.
Bald Man: And we still talk to these guys that we met in line at Blade Show the first year. And in that three hours, you know, yeah we talked about everything from, you know, family to work and play and all that. And so we got to know them. And so we get to see them when we go there last year.
Bald Man: Saw one of the guys because he would come and he just, he literally was like, yep, I got family stuff going on. i think he lived in, he lives in either Tennessee or Kentucky now.
Bald Man: And he said, i drove down. i just wanted to spend an hour or two, make the rounds and see everybody. And I'm going back home because I've got some family stuff going on.
Bald Man: So yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Jesus, that's a far drive for that.
Bald Man: Yeah, so things like that, it's super cool that those bonds are still there. So I really enjoy Blade Show for that. Just meeting people, seeing what their experience is, and meeting you know catching up with people that we've met in the past. that It's just that's a blast for me.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I totally agree. I mean, I've got viewers and fans and stuff that like to come by, which is awesome.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: It's always great to meet people that, um, you know, let's say, you know, they watch videos and yeah, that's always cool to, uh, to meet people and, uh, and just obviously that's where I get to see all my friends every year.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Um, so that's always fun.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: and I love the pit and I love hanging out, um,

Denis Tyrell: Almost as much as the show. um

Denis Tyrell: the The pit's always fun to see. you know Sometimes there's people you didn't know were going to attend that are going to attend and you know that's going to be fun. Probably do a little hanging out at Donnie's table outside this year.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Brought him a
Bald Man: yeah And it's always good because you go there and you wind up having conversations with people that you normally wouldn't um because maybe the people you would normally talk with are talking with somebody else and you wind up just striking up a conversation with someone totally different. and And that's great. So I love everything about it from you know the selling knives to finding new knives to collect and meeting new people and seeing the you know old friends. It's all great.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, last year was actually the first year. i don't i don't know. I just never went. I'm not a smoker. i i just never went outside, like during like the pit, right?
Denis Tyrell: Always hung out inside by the bar, like in that little area.
Bald Man: Yeah, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Last year was the first time i actually went outside because I think I was looking for Jared or somebody. And Jared was out there and Toby was out there and everyone was out there Donnie's table. And I'm like, oh, it's nice and cool out here at the...
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that was kind of cool. I might spend a little more time outside this year. We'll see.
Bald Man: It's a whole, whole different crew out there.
Denis Tyrell: Right. Yeah, it is. um Yeah, the the South Africans are always out there. Trollsky's always out there. Those guys are always half in the bag ah smoking smoking outside. So, yeah, I have to have a chat with those guys.

I think she'll knock it out of the park. um So, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: my fingers crossed for Kelly to complete that journey and well, sorry, complete it to, to get that level. I don't think the journey is ever complete, but um yeah, I'd love to see her get that, that rating of master.

Bald Man: yes Yeah, he's got a little bit of everything, and he just does really clean work. And the one thing, so I had seen a post a long time ago. if you have his page pulled up and you look at the hardware that he uses, they you know uses he like nut and bolts, bolts up handles.

Bald Man: Okay, so he had, in a video ah a long time ago, he brought up his hardware. So there's... it it looks different than anybody else's hardware.
Bald Man: It's like a ah button head, um like Allen or Torx, but he said those little notches, he machines those in each one.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Really?
Bald Man: Yeah. Cause he said somebody, you know, the post I saw was, he goes, I get asked all the time where I get this hardware.
Denis Tyrell: so I... have
Bald Man: And he goes, I machine these in. That's what he does. So it's little details like that that are just super cool.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, when I first looked at that, it's funny brought that up because it was one of the first things I noticed because I actually thought they look like pivot heads for folders because they really do look like pivot heads.
Bald Man: Mm-hmm. Right.
Denis Tyrell: But I see what you mean now.
Bald Man: Yeah, they look like specialty ahty fasteners for sure.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that's cool.
Bald Man: But yeah, so it's like a little three-point that he machines in there. Really, really classy stuff. So yeah, Osborne knives.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. and And really, I mean, they're not, it's just the time. It's just like a little detail. I don't think it's like exceptionally hard to do.
Bald Man: Mm-hmm.
Denis Tyrell: He probably slots them into a little jig and drops an end mill down of that radius and, uh, or whatever, whatever he uses. And, uh, but yeah, it's a cool idea.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Um, yeah I remember when I was looking for a Gulf, so before I discovered Gulf, so bolts, I could not find hardware that, that I was happy with.
Denis Tyrell: Um, and yeah, could you use, you use some other hard, you use like, um, almost like, um, don't want to say a Chicago screw. I know it's not, but it's something like that.
Bald Man: um Yeah. Yeah, I use typically button head screws with threaded barrels. um I have started using some Golso bolts and some things. So um yeah, ah use a little bit of a few of different things. But yeah, either Golso bolts or primarily for a while I've been using those button heads. Early on I used a a taper head screw and I I moved over to those button heads because of the texturing that I grind into the handles.
Bald Man: um If you go too thin, the tapers just bottom out before they actually make contact. So the button heads were the the move for me.
Denis Tyrell: Hmm. Yeah. Um, and now that I have so much folder hardware, I'm, I'm more into the, the, the barrel, the threaded barrel.
Denis Tyrell: Um, that's, and plus you get more of a mechanical connection. Well, I guess you get the same thing with the gulso bolts, but I actually find that, um, the heads on the gulso bolts strip really easy.
Bald Man: Really?
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Um, if, um, I, I make sure not to use, um, a drill or like a, you know, a screwdriver, electronic screwdriver on those things cause they strip really easy.
Bald Man: Hmm.
Denis Tyrell: And i actually keep a separate set just for fit up while I'm putting the knife together back and forth so that I don't mess up, especially the black ones. Cause you'll take the finish off the top.
Bald Man: Yeah, yeah you need ah you need a fresh bit for sure.
Denis Tyrell: Um,
Bald Man: Nothing that's rounded off. um Yeah, the Golsos are a little weird because they're not a tight Torx.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Bald Man: When you get your Torx in there, it's got a little wiggle to it.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it's, well, they're specially machined and they're not, I don't know, they they're not, it's not a torque. I don't think it's actually a torx bit. It's some little flowery, you're right.
Bald Man: Hmm.
Denis Tyrell: there There's a little slop in it when you do it. And that's probably why.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: If you use the drill in and out, just the the spin on it seems to to kill them. or and Unless they're metric or something.
Denis Tyrell: i don't I don't know. I've tried the metric ones and didn't seem to work. But I haven't used them in a while. But i the last few I did, I've been moving more to the um sacrificial gulso, not, um sorry, Corby's.
Denis Tyrell: Cause then you get the, the pin look without, um, you know, with, without it being a pin.
Bald Man: Okay.
Denis Tyrell: Um, and then it doesn't have the screw head on it, but they're not removable. Right. Like, They're there for all all of time after that.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: But it's a nicer effect, especially you want the copper ones because you can do the copper Corbys.
Bald Man: Right, right.
Denis Tyrell: All right. what ah Hold on. Who else we got to talk about?

Bald Man: Yeah, it's been stupid hot.

Bald Man: It's been stupid hot by me. So hopefully hopefully it's cool. Every once in a while it gets cool up there. So we'll see.
Denis Tyrell: I was warning Toby that it was going to be like hot here. We wouldn't be able to do any foraging and all week it's been like high of 70, you know, it's been in the sixties. I'm like, Oh, this is great spring weather.
Denis Tyrell: um But then again, if we want to go jet skiing and want to go in the pool, I'd rather not be 70 degrees. I'd rather be like 85, but um we'll see, I guess. But I would,
Bald Man: Yeah, I don't know what it's going to be like, but there's been quite a few years where it's been nice and cool up there. So we'll see.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I remember the one year that our hotel was like,
Bald Man: I'm hoping so.
Denis Tyrell: walking distance but far the one where we're like across the highway and uh uh yeah i was walked home once after the show and i was dead after parker was complaining so uh still up in the air if parker's gonna make the show um he had to put in for leave
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Oh, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: um Which is his request is already in as of last Thursday. so we're hoping it gets approved tomorrow because that will be seven days. Because if it's under seven days, the flight cost is going to go through the roof.
Denis Tyrell: So he was, don't know.
Bald Man: Well, it'll be awesome to see Parker again. Hopefully he can make it.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, i I really hope he... I think he's going to end up coming to California because the plan was he was going to fly to Atlanta, stay for the show, fly back to California, and then fly California to Chicago.
Denis Tyrell: So unfortunately, that means three one-way flights.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: um So... That'll be pricey. um I'm picking up the the California legs and he was going to pick up the flight to Chicago. So we'll see what it's with the Chicago, chicago sorry, the Atlanta flight, what the Chicago to Atlanta flight is going to be.
Denis Tyrell: maybe Maybe he'll get a deal.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Maybe if one of the, one of the flights isn't sold out, it'll actually, he could actually get a deal on it. I don't know.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: So. i would I mean, I'm going to see the kid anyway, but I would love for him to be at the show. I tried to coerce him into like wearing his uniform, but I don't think that's going to fly.

Denis Tyrell: He said no way would he be walking around in his uniform.

Bald Man: No, one I was there in October.
Denis Tyrell: Oh, he was already October. No, he didn't ship out until November. So yeah, he was probably with his friends.
Bald Man: But you know, he probably didn't want to come by because Jared was sick again then.
Denis Tyrell: Probably. jar Jared, good I think it's you. I think when he thinks of you, it's he starts to get sick.
Bald Man: You think it's me?
Denis Tyrell: I think that's what it is.

Denis Tyrell: He knows he's going to see you next week.

Denis Tyrell: I think now when he thinks about making knives, then he gets ill.

Denis Tyrell: That's what I think. He was supposed to be here two two days this weekend this past weekend, and he bailed on both days.
Bald Man: Yeah, I think...
Bald Man: It's either knives make him sick because he's sick of them or he gets so excited his immune system shuts down and he just can't handle it.
Denis Tyrell: yeah yeah probably that
Bald Man: I'll choose to believe that. I'm going to choose to believe that.
Denis Tyrell: oh all right man well anything else we uh we're gonna look forward to at uh blade show i'm not thinking of yeah we gotta we gotta to go to a nice dinner at least once all right we'll figure something out maybe saturday or something

Denis Tyrell: Well, the little, if it's not a million degrees, the little plaza that's next door isn't too bad. But you got a car. what are you worried about?
Bald Man: Yeah. I mean, still, it's nice.
Denis Tyrell: We can't all fit in it, but
Bald Man: This is true.
Denis Tyrell: we'll figure it out.
Bald Man: Well, it'll be a good time. I'm looking forward to it. Looking forward to seeing you there and seeing everybody else. So definitely be sure if you're listening and you stop by the booth, I will just like usual have some monsters and some waters. Denis Tyrell: I swear, I looked at the map and I thought I knew where your table was. um And then I looked there on the map and then I'm like, oh, because you say for a while you were like on the fence whether you're going to go back to a table or a booth.
Denis Tyrell: and that Maybe that was before Texas.
Bald Man: Yeah, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: And then just what last week or whenever it was that chatted with you was last week.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: I'm like, oh, he must have been going back to a table because because I don't see his booth while I was looking in the total wrong spot on the map is the problem. Um, cause then I was, cause then you said, oh no, I do have a booth. And I was like alarmed. Like, uh, you sure you do?
Denis Tyrell: Cause I don't see it.
Bald Man: ah
Denis Tyrell: Uh, and then I'm just blind and I couldn't find it, but, but I found it.
Bald Man: It was there.
Denis Tyrell: I didn't realize you were that. I, seemed like you were closer to us, but you're actually further away than I remember.
Bald Man: Yeah. Yeah, it's ah it's fairly central, and there's a lot of, um yeah, I mean, I had a lot of traffic there. it was a good spot, so I enjoyed it.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. I was, and I've said this before, I have this thing like I want to face the front of the, like, the entrances so that, like, people are coming towards you and you can see your table.
Bald Man: Mm-hmm.
Denis Tyrell: I know yours faces that direction too. I like that. I don't like having a table where people are coming from my back, even though you got the overhead sign that is double-sided and stuff.
Bald Man: Right.
Denis Tyrell: I just, I like to face the... um the entrance where most of your people are coming from so that i can see oh there's a big crowd coming i don't know it's a mental thing but yeah this year again my table is facing the front which i like so yeah you think we're gonna start to see i don't did you watch um um jeremy uh simple little life did you watch his video on the decline of the knife market did you hear about that
Bald Man: Right.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Good. Got to see all the action.
Bald Man: I did. yeah i watched his the yeah i watched his video on it. it's It was an interesting take. What did you think?
Denis Tyrell: um yeah i mean i've been saying it for years that for two years now that i think we're gonna see a decline now that um fortune fires off the air and there was a big you know, there was a big bubble and now it's going to contract. And I think we're seeing that contraction now.
Denis Tyrell: Um, And I think we're seeing more guys get out of knife making, which, you know, for the guys that hang around, maybe that's not a bad thing.
Denis Tyrell: um You know, it's, we don't want to see people go out of business, but, you know, for the the guys that stick it out, then, you know, it's, it will eventually be better for us, but the buyer's got to be there.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: And I think we're going to see a decline in the market. And I think that's probably happened already.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Bald Man: Yeah, I think the market, um I agree that there's going to be a little bit of a decline. i think that's true of most markets. um I think there was a there was a just a perfect storm that happened with...
Bald Man: COVID, Forged in Fire, people having more time on their hands to do things.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Bald Man: So you had a lot of guys get into knife making that were either out of jobs or their jobs are remote so they could do things with their hands.
Bald Man: you know It's a making being a knife maker just on the surface. It's they're small items. So and you don't need a huge shop to do it.
Bald Man: So it's not like woodworking, right? Woodworking, you need some room to store large pieces of wood, have big tables and table saws.
Denis Tyrell: yeah
Bald Man: um And so a lot of guys were able to get into it. um with a fairly, you know, we all know we most of us started with a little one by 30 cheap Harbor Freight, um, belt sander. And so your startup, your entry is super inexpensive, um, compared to a lot of other hobbies.
Bald Man: Um, so we saw a lot of guys get into that because they had time. We saw a lot of customers that were looking at those things because they were sitting watching TV and found forged in fire and Um, that handmade items just were super cool. I think both of those things have started to go away, which is why there's been a little map market downturn potentially. Um, that said, I agree with you. I, I think it's a good thing for guys that are going to stay in it. And it, and it does the cynical side says, well, it weeds out the people that were just there to make a buck. Um,
Bald Man: And if you're really passionate about knives and heat treat and edge geometry and fit and finish, then those guys are going to stay around.
Bald Man: Whether they whether it becomes a hobby and they continue to make knives or whether they continue to ramp up their business and go full time and make it a deal.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: yeah I mean, there's some guys that are, they'll kill it no matter what. I think you're one of those guys. You're going to kill it at the show. um There's lots get like Knives by Nuge, like couple these guys that are just going to kill it no matter what.
Denis Tyrell: And they just have that, that go get them attitude. And then, the high-end custom makers, they're always going to have their collectors. I think the guys that are going to get pinched are those either the and say newer makers or they haven't really found their niche yet um they're the ones i think they're going to take the brunt of this um so it is what it is it happens in all markets um you know things go through cycles and we're in one of those down where the start of one of those down cycles i think we'll we'll see how but it'll be interesting to see attendance at blade show if that's going to be
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: a predictor. Um, is that a trailing thing? Like, what are we going to see? Cause I think it's in increased the, like we haven't seen it decline yet. Attendance at blade show over the last three years.
Bald Man: Right.
Denis Tyrell: Maybe this is the one where it starts declining. So we'll see.
Bald Man: I don't think that'll be the case. I think, um yeah, I think it'll either increase or, it yeah, I think it'll increase, to be honest.
Denis Tyrell: You think it's going to increase?
Bald Man: I do. i think, I think ultimately there's more people that are getting into knives every day. um And I think there's more people that are staying as collectors.
Bald Man: I think that's the other thing that is not, um people aren't accounting for. you as Since I started as a knife collector, you know I'm trying to think of when the first year I went to Blade Show was. I think it was either nine or 10 years ago.
Bald Man: um and I had been collecting knives for three, four, five years maybe before that, I've seen the the knife industry talk about ups and downs even before now of um sales declining and sales is rising.
Denis Tyrell: Thank
Bald Man: And, you know, there's always the fear, right, that it's going to go away. I think two back to like what people are making, um Some of the people, and I'm not trying, I don't want to criticize anybody that's not um able to contend if they started full-time knife making.
Denis Tyrell: It's true.
Bald Man: I'm not trying to criticize. I'm taking a guess that as collectors or as hobby, people that are enthused about anything, whether it be knives, watches, if you're into hunting and guns or cycling, whatever you're into, whatever you're into,
Bald Man: your tastes change over time, right? You're chasing something else. And so if ah if maybe it's just seeing customers that are, their tastes are changing. You know, I think back to when I first started collecting knives, I started out with, ah you know, ah my family was young. we You know, I was working nonstop and we didn't have a lot of money because it was all going towards the kids in school and, you know, the house and all that stuff.
Bald Man: um And so. my knives that I started collecting were the Kershaw's and the CRKT's and $25 to knives.
Denis Tyrell: Thank you.
Bald Man: That was where i was at. and slowly over time, i began spending Your tastes change to where i'm not interested so much i mean some of the cheap inexpensive knives still grab my attention and they look cool But with that, I wanted more. i wanted ah premium steels premium handle materials or I was looking for other things. And so maybe that's what some people that are feeling the pinch are really their customers are moving on to something else, whether that's better. I don't mean it that they're on a better knife. They're just on to something else. You know, they started out with a hand forge knife and now they're going, well, a hand forge knife I have.
Bald Man: a full collection of those. Now I want to look at something that's, um, maybe a premium, you know, powder metal or G steel. That's going to be that super steel. So I can see and experience what that looks like, or maybe I want to get into folders or even the folder guys like me that started getting into fixed blades, your tastes just change.
Bald Man: Um, Again, I think that's the same with anything you collect. you know Watch guys are the same, right? Watch guys, you start out with one thing and then you you migrate to another. So I'm not so convinced that it's a decline rather than just the customers you're used to getting business from or maybe just their tastes have changed or they're looking for something that's different from all the things they have in their collection.
Bald Man: And they'll be back.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. And if Bladeshow Texas was any kind of indicator, that show has, since the last time I went, it seemed like it was twice the size.
Denis Tyrell: So um having, going to the show this year, i was blown away at the size of the show.
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: ah So if that's any the indication that that show is growing at least 20 to 30% every year Now, I think it's growing faster than Atlanta is. um It's definitely growing faster than Atlanta. But, um yeah, if if it's any indication, we'll see what Atlanta does this year.
Denis Tyrell: Hopefully it just, even at even a steady state.
Bald Man: I also think just looking at the, yeah, looking at the map of the exhibitor, the floor plan, it looks like they've rearranged to add more booths. I don't know how many more tables they can add um other than adding to the second, the baller room.
Bald Man: ah But it it looks like there were some changes in the layout. I mean, I'd have to look back over the previous years, but. it definitely looked like they added more. So I would say it's continuing to grow.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that's good.
Bald Man: and don't think it's slowing down and they're kind of capped up on their, they're capped out on their space and that venue.
Denis Tyrell: that's That's awesome.
Bald Man: So I would imagine they're turning away people that are trying to exhibit.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that's an interesting one because, i mean, it gets to a point that they have to just say, yeah, this is the amount of space we have. And it's either...
Bald Man: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: you get a whole nother block and then you got to pre-sell all that. Cause mean, they're, they always turn away, even Texas, they always turn away people, um, who try to get tables at the end.
Bald Man: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: I know I tried one year at Texas and it was like, like six weeks out and they said, no, there's no table.
Bald Man: yeah
Denis Tyrell: There's no tables. Um, but yeah, we'll, we'll see. Uh, it'll be a good show no matter what. I'm so looking forward to it. Um, we will Like I said, we'll get there Thursday early.
Denis Tyrell: um think knowing Jared, the first thing we're going to want to do is have breakfast and and i probably set up right at nine. i think I've got some Knife Maker Guild meetings to go to Thursday morning.
Denis Tyrell: and then, um, yeah, then we're going to do the setup and then hopefully we can get into our rooms and, you know, have a nap.
