Introduction and Banter

00:00:16
Speaker
Yo, welcome to another Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. This is Dennis Terrell, Terrell Knife Works, and my dickhead friend Jared Sandoval from Echo Blades is with me.
00:00:27
Speaker
He's like a virus, you just can't get rid of him. Please, just ask and I will go. Just ask. I was totally not ready for that.

Mother's Day Celebrations

00:00:38
Speaker
I was doing, for the intro, I was reading something or listening to something and and then all of a sudden I heard our intro. I'm like, what the hell? I'm like, oh I guess we're going.
00:00:50
Speaker
Well, hell. Hi. tell you what. I tell you what. How you been? I've been great. Yeah?
00:01:01
Speaker
Things are good? Things are okay. Just okay? How was she? how Did you celebrate your mother for Mother's Day? I did. Yeah, had we had a great Mother's Day. It was actually really good. And I think it comes on the heels of me actually ah being a little prepared this year.
00:01:20
Speaker
but um Prepared? Were you not prepared last year? I'm i'm horrible at this these things, dude. It's a guy thing. I'm horrible. And it sucks because if there's any...
00:01:34
Speaker
day that I think you you shouldn't be that way. It's it's this day because both my my my wife and my mother just amazing women. and you know But I try to subscribe. Lynn and I do the same thing with Valentine's Day. We don't make a big deal about that. I'm more of a hey, let's celebrate them all year long and not try to be a lame and just pick one day where you go nuts.
00:02:01
Speaker
Yeah. think it's a continuous thing, which would probably someone could make the case that I continuously suck at that. But anyways, I wasn't going to say it. and a yeah But no, we had a great

Golf Outing and Family Time

00:02:16
Speaker
a great day. the The girls came over and did some stuff with Lynn on Saturday while Jared and I went to golfing.
00:02:23
Speaker
um And yeah, I shit the bed. which is Wait, wait, wait a second. You said the girls came over to do something. Saturday.
00:02:34
Speaker
Oh, Saturday. Okay. I thought, like, what? You said you did something. Yeah. Saturday. So jaredt Jared and I went went golfing on Saturday. Yeah.
00:02:44
Speaker
And yeah, i didn't. I shot okay, but it's not, not, not what I've been shooting. And then Jared shot a fuck an 82. Check this shit out. He shoots at 82, which is fucking incredibly low.
00:02:58
Speaker
And he doubled the 16 tripled 17 doubled And he still shot an 82. So I had to take a shoelace. had to take a shoelaces out on like hole 17. Cause he was going to, you know, try to do something stupid. He was throwing a hissy fit.
00:03:15
Speaker
And I was like, dude, you got to chill out. Like, come on. That's an amazing round. But, uh, yeah, we did that. And then, uh, I'll get back to that. And then, Oh, please. I can't wait. I'm on the edge of my seat.
00:03:27
Speaker
I know. and And we'll talk about pool too. Okay. good Yeah. Uh, Yeah, so then um Lynn went out with the girls on Saturday, so they spent some time with her. And then Sunday, everybody had to work, which is kind of weird. So I got the awesome opportunity to go get, which I thought was I was going to go get a pedicure.
00:03:54
Speaker
with Lynn. And, um, so every now then we go do that on like our anniversary. I'll go with her and, and do that. So, um, but turns out I just got to watch her get a pedicure and a manicure. So I just basically sat next to her for about an hour and a half, two hours. Well, good husband.
00:04:12
Speaker
Yeah. Which is fine. Yeah. ah We just hung out and, uh, And then my mom came over after, and then we went and had lunch at the, at the golf course and Jared was working there.
00:04:28
Speaker
So then after we had lunch, we went over to the, to the range and we all hit some balls. So it was cool, man. I, it, it was not planned and it wasn't intentional. and I know it's like, Hey, like golf is everything, blah, blah, blah, but just worked out that way. And So Jared got to see my mom.
00:04:45
Speaker
ah We spent like, I don't know, 20 minutes at the range and then came home and watched some movies and stuff. but it was pretty cool. was It was a, it was nice chill day.
00:04:56
Speaker
um and just got to celebrate, two of the, uh, most important people and women in my life. So it was good. I missed my grandmother a lot though. That was, yeah that was kind of tough, but, um, yeah, it was a good day.
00:05:14
Speaker
It was a good day. I even ended up, uh, I couldn't watch any more TV. So I went in the shop and did some handstand and for a couple hours towards the, in the evening time, uh, yesterday.

Knife-Making Adventures

00:05:27
Speaker
And how did that go? I dude, I got my ass busy this week. I was in the shop, uh, three evenings and uh, after Jeff, and Jeff came out and golfed with us on Saturday.
00:05:40
Speaker
um And then we went back to my house and then we ran new airlines for for the compressed air that I've been having the issues with. I bought some new hose and we kind of redid that.
00:05:54
Speaker
And then he took off and I spent, yeah, the rest of the afternoon in there. I think, yeah, you were to text me because, yeah, ah ladies and gentlemen,
00:06:06
Speaker
I had to buy brand new sandpaper because Dennis has found the most awesomest thing. Couldn't let Brent and I just live in our little cool sandpaper world. He has to try to one up us. So, uh, yeah, this stuff, but not better.
00:06:22
Speaker
Where do you get I don't know. I I'm going to try it. Cause, um, yeah, don't, no one gives a shit about being right. If it's better. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like, I'm that guy. I don't care. You can fucking sit on your high horse with having to have all the greatest ideas in the world. i don't give a shit. If it's better, i'm gonna i I'll be happy to say it's awesome. um Yeah, but I just, did i did a, I'm in hand sanding. I've been ah telling myself all week that I'm in hand sanding heaven.
00:06:53
Speaker
um And that's how I'm going to choose to think about it. because it sucks. We all know that, but yeah. but Sometimes you just get in the groove. Sometimes you just like, I put music on and or I'm just kind of chilling and i just, because I had four knives to hand sand Friday and you just got to bear down and do it. That's all I did Friday was hand sand four knives.
00:07:20
Speaker
So yeah, mean they're they're folders, but it's not. Oh, okay. I was going to say I hand sanded four knives last week and uh to various stages um i just kept myself not stepping out of the shop like i'd get get frustrated or look at something get like i i i i learned with for me with hand sanding that it's better for me to go with intent and
00:07:51
Speaker
And then if I'm starting to feel like I'm about to say it's good enough, I'll put the fucker aside because it's probably not good enough and give it a second, move on to something else. And then when I come back to it, you'll notice some areas that you need to do. And.
00:08:07
Speaker
Anyways, it works for me. Um, and then I started going through this fucking immense pile of shit that I have. And I was like, God dang, I have a lot of knives that need to get through the, uh, through the, uh, that first stretch. Oh, I was putting the the sand shark through its paces, uh, with the, uh,
00:08:27
Speaker
With the stones and the and getting everything up to like, I think, two... think got some up to 400. And then I'm stopped because I got to do some handles. Yeah.
00:08:40
Speaker
And these are all full-tang knives, mostly? No, there's two two hidden tangs. and Actually, I guess it's three. Three full-tang knives.
00:08:53
Speaker
So five, sorry. But... Yeah, it was good, man. i'm I'm actually feeling like I want to to finish some stuff. for I mean, I do. I've always wanted to. It's not that. But I was like, last week, I was like, i don't give a shit if I do or not. But I'm feeling a little hopeful here to good to have some stuff to bring. So we'll see.

Traffic Delays and Knife Heat Treating

00:09:20
Speaker
there and then i even yeah i uh i think i talked i talked to you about it but maybe not because on friday i did talk to you about it on friday we had ah i want to make a joke about it but we had a ah guy fuck traffic up for the entire bay area community that has to travel to the valley which is a large percentage on friday it's also people going out of town it's like huge i mean Yeah, somebody was having a having a tough time apparently and decided to hang out on the side of an overpass and threatened to jump and they shut the freeway down for like three hours. and
00:10:00
Speaker
It's about what, three miles from, four miles from my house? Yeah, it takes me less than 15 minutes to get to your house. And because I'm off from the freeway a little bit. Yeah. So it it takes me about 15 minutes to get. yeah to It is not more than four miles. It is. It is not more. than Yeah.
00:10:20
Speaker
So it's pretty close. I didn't get to you. What was it like an hour and 45 minutes? Yeah. Yeah. It almost took me two hours because I had to go like way backtrack and then try to come back.
00:10:32
Speaker
um But anyways, I was telling you that I um i heat treated um the the basket weave Damascus chef knife, but I used the new even heat.
00:10:48
Speaker
And apparently i I haven't set the, ah it doesn't have the same audible alarms that the the other one has. Which is not a big deal if I'm just if i'm just heat treating, because I'll do things that keep me entertained or or focused back on the on the oven. This time I was i had a fucking audio book or a podcast going on, headphones on, and I was hand sanding.
00:11:14
Speaker
Bloop. Oblivious. Fucking oblivious. So i let i let this knife go through. i did all the the thermal cycle. uh, grain refinement, whatever it is. Uh, and then on the heat treat, I have a, uh, um, a setting where you go through the 10 minutes soak. And then if you're going to do a handful other knives, I have like an additional 20 minutes after to keep a whole time. I let it go through the whole fucking thing. I caught it and it had finished everything and it was dropping down to like four, 1450. And I was like, mother. so I let it sit in for like 30 minutes. Soak.
00:11:52
Speaker
And then I caught it, redid it again, let it go back up another 10 minutes, and then heat treated it. but Yeah, I mean, it's not going have the best grain in the world, but I don't think it's going to be, you know, the end of the world. Would I go through the whole cycle again? Probably not.
00:12:11
Speaker
Well, I didn't. Yeah. We'll see. I mean, we I'll... ah I'll bring it by and we'll yeah do to do a hardness test on it and yeah make sure it's not too chippy. in and It came out at like an, and then I never sent you a picture, but it came out an interesting color.
00:12:28
Speaker
Cause I know like that grayish dark gray, but it came out a little darker than that. It wasn't black. I said it was black, but once all the scale and shit came off.
00:12:40
Speaker
Yeah. But it was a, it was ah it was a different color than I've seen. come so Maybe that's just because it sat around your shop so long it got dusty. Could be. Could be.
00:12:51
Speaker
That was fucking... That's good one, Dennis. It's real good. Here I am. I'm just trying to knock me down.
00:13:03
Speaker
um Yeah. So, anyways, I don't know. Anybody... Have any thoughts on leaving a knife in for 14 hours? Soak. I mean, but yeah man i i it's not like it's spiked up in temp. If it was a forge and you shot past the temp, um that would be bad.
00:13:23
Speaker
Is it ideal? No. ah The grain's probably a little bit bigger, but I don't think it's the end of the world. you were eating a batch of of six or seven knives and I had them going through that same cycle,
00:13:38
Speaker
Eventually that, you know the last one would have been in there for that long. Well, that's not a good idea either. If you got that many knives, you should get a really big quench tank and do them together. Ideally, not, you know, I wouldn't do more. I don't heat treat more than
00:13:57
Speaker
um if it's carbon steel and not usually not more than four knives. Maybe I don't either. Yeah, I don't either. Because you've got to hold them for it for a long time if you're doing one at a time.
00:14:09
Speaker
Yeah. Stainless isn't as bad because you've got the... you know you're already holding You're already holding them for half an hour anyway on stainless usually. So I just don't feel it's as bad there.
00:14:20
Speaker
I don't know. Any metal nerds, tell me if it's F or not. Laren, if you're listening, chime in. Yeah, come on, Laren.
00:14:30
Speaker
Oh, man. So even heat. Even heat for the win. Yeah. Even heat for the win. Absolutely. you You should, you should have paid the extra buck and got the ah audible. is it got the alarm? You just didn't set it or what?
00:14:46
Speaker
I don't know. I didn't have to have it on. why I cheaped out when I got mine. I should have got the old one. it's got it's got it's got everything. i I don't think I it either... i didn't hear it. That's another thing, too, because I was in headphones. so

Even Heat Kiln Benefits

00:15:01
Speaker
But i and but i I really don't have any excuse here, Dennis. No. I have the tap controller. I have the the notifications on my phone, my watch. like Did you get the notification?
00:15:16
Speaker
I just zoned the fuck out, dude. I was just hand sanding away. Because I get a lot of... my My wrist is always fucking buzzing and shit from things going off. So maybe it did, and I just didn't pay any attention to it. But um yeah, they make it extremely hard to forget.
00:15:32
Speaker
Which is why, if you're in the market for a heat treating oven, you should go check out Even Heat Kiln. They are a family... owned and operated company since 1948 building the highest quality heat treat ovens available and i am torn whether i want to do this or not
00:15:56
Speaker
i am literally torn but yeah hold on what the fuck is going on with this thing i don't know what you're talking about my my uh My screen won't move.
00:16:11
Speaker
Stop being such a pussy. Oh, that's what I was trying to scroll to. God. winner will Yeah. You just ruined the rhythm there. Yeah.
00:16:24
Speaker
Yeah. But if you're having any problems,
00:16:31
Speaker
staying at attention, throw it in the evening heat. It'll get you all nice and vertical. Yeah. Like, devin you got a vertical oven, huh? Yeah, that's right. That's when, yeah you know.
00:16:45
Speaker
When you're too little less than horizontal, you take to vertical. if that you You don't have to worry about going P. Yeah. he vertical It's the Cialis for the knife community right there. thank you a and Good stuff.
00:17:02
Speaker
Yeah. Awesome ovens. Get yourself one. Get yourself two. Get yourself three. Fuck it while you're at it. Go talk to Spencer and the boys. They will take care of you. ah They'll be at um the the big show coming up here in less than a month now.
00:17:20
Speaker
Yeah, it's getting close. Three weeks. Three weeks now. Got to get some shit done. had a pretty... now i think about i had a pretty Pretty active weekend.
00:17:35
Speaker
Kim was away um visiting the grandkid again in Colorado, so I was by myself, and I just did lots of honeydew projects and the whole weekend. you do What did you do Saturday afternoon?
00:17:50
Speaker
What did I do Saturday afternoon?
00:17:54
Speaker
Yeah. when you I'm trying to think. What did I do? Um, Saturday. What the fuck did I do Saturday afternoon? i don't know, but I was like, Hey, are you still in here? Like, Nope. I'm leaving the shop now. Oh, No, I was like i was in and out of the shop. I i hung some curtains. I did some other shit. You honeydoing? I was honeydoing the whole day. And then I went in the shop to um grind that buoy.
00:18:27
Speaker
and uh use my Ameribraid rotary platen to thin the edge I use the waterfall platen to fix the um to make the plunges perfect I was loving life it was awesome if you guys need a grinder extraordinaire, go get yourselves a, uh, an Ameribraid.

Etching Techniques for Damascus Knives

00:18:50
Speaker
Use discount code triple T 10 for 10% off accessories or TTT for a discount on machines. Go get yourself one or check out the hyper disc. Uh, I did a shit ton of buffing on Friday. Um, because I've, I've modified my process for, um, etching and I now, um,
00:19:14
Speaker
for etching Damascus. And actually, if anyone's interested in the in the, I actually wrote up a recipe for my students and anybody if anybody wants a copy of that, maybe I'll put it up on the, ah ah because it's a step-by-step. But now i am I am back to sanding my blades to 2000 before they go in the acid.
00:19:37
Speaker
lame and i know you love that part uh and then they go in the acid they do the couple of dips and then they get buffed and then they go into coffee and all of these blades came out just stunning the coffee came out perfect the um yeah the i have one the one i'll show you um it's downstairs i'll show in a couple of days Or you'll see an Instagram video of it. Super high contrast. And it's like a pretty low layer, just Damascus, just alternating layers, but so black.
00:20:14
Speaker
Very nice. So, yeah, I was using the hell out of my buffer and I wish I had a yeah a Hyperdisk. It would have been easier to swap out wheels quickly. Mm-hmm.
00:20:25
Speaker
Yeah. But yeah, Saturday I did a bunch of honeydew projects. And it's speed. What's that? And it's variable speed. Yes. That would be nice.
00:20:37
Speaker
um I did. so I want to talk about this new sandpaper. So I went to order i'd like. Oh, no was what's going on?
00:20:48
Speaker
So first off, I'm going to tell you that I am. ah jar Jared's going to like bust my balls here. So get ready.
00:20:59
Speaker
It's almost June, dude. We already know. You don't need to make a major announcement. Your month is coming. Don't trip. We still love you. No, I'm saying, for what I'm about to say, I don't um prescribe to like the herd mentality when it comes to products. And when someone tells me something, I have to try it for myself. And Jared's got this shitty grin on his face. um I did try your sandpaper. That was a good one. um
00:21:31
Speaker
But I know. It's not my sandpaper. You're the one you recommend it. I i um literally have a million other examples in my mind. Yes, I'm sure you do.
00:21:44
Speaker
But go ahead. the The rhino wet is one of those things that I personally, I think there's like a herd mentality ah over that one. I don't like it. I think the backing is too thin, especially on the rolls, the rolls specific. I don't use the sheets much. I use the the adhesive back rolls. So I'm a big fan of the adhesive back rolled sandpaper.
00:22:08
Speaker
That's all I use. um So i yeah I buy the Dura Gold stuff, which is cheaper than end of stuff by a lot.
00:22:19
Speaker
um But they didn't have any in 220. So I'm on Amazon scrolling, whatever. And then I see Dura Gold, but it's purple.
00:22:30
Speaker
I'm like, what the hell is this? And it's $220, and it's Dura Gold Premium. And I'm like, oh, fucking get me some of this. And it's like $24.99 a roll.
00:22:43
Speaker
The other stuff is like. Versus $18. $18. $18.
00:22:47
Speaker
yeah ah And I got it. And the the the only thing that's the same thing I don't like about the sandpaper you recommended, there's the only downside, but I'm okay with it. Like I'll live with it, is that it's not a paperback. You can't rip it.
00:23:03
Speaker
I'm used to like, oh, I use a bit of sandpaper. I rip that piece off and I move the sandpaper up. I stick it to my stick again. This one, the backing is like, I can't even describe, it's like a hard plastic.
00:23:17
Speaker
You can grind the, fuck off of an edge and it won't wear through the backing. The backing is like crazy stiff, um which is really cool when you're really going at something. it Anyway, I love this sandpaper. it It lasts forever. I felt like the 220 ground like a 120.
00:23:42
Speaker
So go get some. What are you laughing about?
00:23:48
Speaker
I'm a child. You are a child. It's really stiff. You're going after it. Sorry. like a I just can't. I'm like crying right now. and so speak It's good sandpaper.

Duragold Sandpaper Review

00:24:05
Speaker
I suggest you guys try it. It's the Duragold. And this is not, actually reached out to them and tried their luck. Of course you did. Of course you did. have no shame.
00:24:17
Speaker
I wanted to reach out to them and see if I can do a video on it and get them to send me a bunch. So I'm going to do it. i I hope you I'm only doing the video if they send me a bunch, but. I was amazed. I was amazed how long it lasted. The funny thing is, is that when i was looking for, when I came across the X tooling or whatever the crap is that um I found, the purple stuff was, I almost bought that.
00:24:45
Speaker
The difference is that at the time that Sam paper was 25 bucks and the other one was like, I think it was like 14 bucks a roll for, yeah for the stuff that we had. It's gone up a little bit since, but it's still not 25 bucks. But um yeah, that, that that's funny. Cause I had, I had never seen the purple stuff before. So I was yeah surprised. I thought it was a new, maybe it is a new.
00:25:09
Speaker
The only thing that kind of threw me off is description of it because it's like they give some weird description like like longboard like i'm like what does that mean is it mean for like surfboards like what does this mean i have no idea but it says longboard on a lot of things yeah i noticed the same i was just gonna say that the same word right right as you said it yeah it's weird like i and that threw me off why they keep saying but i think the dirt goal the the the yellow stuff says it too i don't i don't remember that
00:25:41
Speaker
There's a couple of different ads on it. depends where you buy it on what link you use on Amazon for it. But I don't remember them saying that. Longboard continuous roll PSA. Huh. That's the premium or the yellow?
00:25:55
Speaker
No, that's the yellow. And then you got the longboard ceramic film. Yeah. Yep.
00:26:08
Speaker
So, and then there's wet, dry, longboard. There's, yeah, there's all kinds of, i noticed that word too, but at any rate. Yeah. what It's good stuff. I was, I, well, I ordered some, I ordered some, it'll be here Wednesday.
00:26:22
Speaker
Yeah. We'll see. So give it a try. Let me know what you think. I think it just, yeah um I did notice you have to use a lubricant. You have to use like Windex or something like that. Using it dry. um When do you not use it?
00:26:39
Speaker
When I get to the high grits, like when I get 800 and 1,000, I won't use a lubricant. I always do. Yeah. No, I raw dog it at 800 or 1,000. Yeah, my man. Get it, dude.
00:26:53
Speaker
Get it. Yeah. I don't. Because it gets messy. And yeah, I don't want it to. Speaking of raw dog, and I saw a a reel on Instagram where some golfers stuck hot dogs inside like a fucking big old Yeti.
00:27:10
Speaker
it was hot water with a hot dog, like four hot dogs in it. And they had the top on and then they were like in the middle of their round and they fucking busted it out. Had some warm hot dogs ready and and some buns and made their own hot dog, brought their own hot dogs to the thing. i thought it was fucking genius.
00:27:28
Speaker
Absolutely genius. Very white trashy. I don't give a shit. That is that is next level next level cool to me i don't drink right so i don't like there's a lot of cool little you know hide your keep your shit cool and so um man and plus i'm a fat guy so uh not anymore i think i think ah i think you're gonna you're gonna lose that fat guy title i think we're taking it away i i'm happy to let the fat guy go but the fat will never die You will always be there. I think people that that only see you at Blade Show, they're going to be like, but who's this guy? with
00:28:07
Speaker
Where's Jared? yeah There's some picture. ah If you're interested, ah i like to do this thing where i'll I'll show you a picture of the guy that ate this Jared. Yes, I was going to say There is a large mammal that used to be named Jared that occupied...
00:28:30
Speaker
seen it took up yeah took up a huge amount of oxygen after but anyways that dude would have uh yeah would be having some hot dogs in a thermos right now but uh yeah i i thought it was fucking super cool but um yeah i don't know how we got the hot dogs and fat jared but i don't know yeah yeah Oh, I got to give a shout out to, I haven't even listened to the episode, but the title of the the episode for the Knife Talk guys, the title of their episode this week made me laugh.
00:29:09
Speaker
ah The title of their episode is, Do Northers are the Flat Earthers of the Knife Making Community. And if you understand what that means.
00:29:21
Speaker
That's Canadians? No. Do Northers. What's Do North? I'm pretty sure this means the people that only quench with the knife facing oh north. right Fair. Yeah. Okay. I thought they were ripping on you. I'm pretty sure that this is, i i guarantee you this is Jeff Fader's hot hot take. His hot dog. His hot dog.
00:29:43
Speaker
Which I totally agree. There's... ah when i I got whatever, a couple of months, it was really boring. I think Kim was away or something like that. And I'm, you know, I've watched all of Netflix and I find a show called, uh, fire and iron or something. Have you ever seen that on it's a, it's not, you told me about it.
00:30:05
Speaker
And, uh, it was, I watched the first episode and he's forging and it was pretty entertaining. And it got to the point where, you know he does very rustic stuff and it got to the point where he's like oh this this knife warplank crazy i didn't have my quench tank uh face due north i'm gonna have to quench it again and he quenches it again and it's straight and he's like see see and that's what it reminded me of when i saw that and i never watched that show again after i saw that on there yeah that's yeah okay
00:30:37
Speaker
not Not to alienate any of our listeners who believe in this horse cocky. Well, come on. Why are you going to be sensitive about that? You call everybody stupid for doing anything you don't think is appropriate, and you fucking want apologize to the dude in authors? Get out of here. Oh, no. this is Apologize to the fucking multi-pin guys, you ass.
00:30:59
Speaker
uh multi pins are fine three pins no good if you want to put six pins eight pins that's fine just don't do three it's all fine dennis god it's all fine it's whatever floats their boat your boat face it due north and get the hell out of here going home going home Yeah, no, that's funny. And I don't get that shit. i'm I mean, here I am fucking leaving knives in the oven for 10 days. So whatever.
00:31:30
Speaker
You've got bigger problems. I got bigger problems. Yeah. can't even fucking pay attention for more than two seconds. And yeah one other, speaking of knife relating things, um I got to give Rick a shout out. Rick Hall, because he kind of turned me on to this. and um What?
00:31:49
Speaker
What? Say that again. Rick Hall. I'm giving him a shout out because he turned me on to this, what I'm about to say. No,
00:32:02
Speaker
know I'm so interested. Rick, I'm going to text you to listen tomorrow. This is an amazing day. I can't even imagine because... Just go ahead. yeah i've I've credited Rick for many things.
00:32:15
Speaker
And I've actually been doing it on the last couple of Hidden Tangs, which is using an end mill and a really long 316th end mill.
00:32:26
Speaker
and then plunging into the block and then just going back and forth you get a perfect perfect hole in the handle because you did it with a mill and like it's an expensive end mill because it's like a fucking five inch end mill but uh long but it's three sixteenths how how much is expensive oh they're like a hundred bucks for the fucking bit yeah Holy, okay, yeah, that's expensive. That that that makes it not. down there and i probably believe I'll be at your house.
00:33:03
Speaker
I've already broken the end off, so now it's a four-inch end mill because I broke it out of the collet, but I still use it, but now it only goes four inches. Story of my life. Ha, ha, ha.
00:33:15
Speaker
yeah But um it makes like i slot the the the put the knife in the handle and it's perfectly straight. Like, you know, I still bet it, but.
00:33:30
Speaker
It's awesome. no No screwing around with files and scraping the hole or anything like that. That's an excellent suggestion, and I'm glad you followed Rick's suggestion. Yeah.
00:33:40
Speaker
So that's cool if you guys have a mill, do your handles in a mill with a long end mill. No, I have one. Yeah, get off your ass and use it. ah just it Yeah, I've never set it up.
00:33:53
Speaker
Well, you also haven't spent the $1,000 in tooling you're going to need once you start using it. Yeah. There's that. i already have all that. You have all the tooling, parallels, all that shit.
00:34:06
Speaker
Yeah. well, you got no excuse. I'm not. Look, i'm I'm next level at finding deals, right? I paid like fucking $250 for this freaking mill and had, I have every call it, um all kinds of, yeah, parallels, fucking holds. i Yeah, I got it all. It's the best. I just don't have a collector in your shop.
00:34:30
Speaker
I don't have a DRO, so it's pretty much useless. Come on. You can do a lot with DRO. Without it? With it. Without without a DRO, can still do a lot. Come on.
00:34:42
Speaker
Sure. I should be able to do what you just said. Absolutely. You don't even need one for that. That's right. So. Thanks, Rick. ah he I've actually been doing it for a little while, but I haven't.
00:34:56
Speaker
yeah I didn't hang him out for it. No, it was his idea. Oh, okay. All right. I thought you were saying. No, no. I thought thought about it, but then he told me, so I did it.
00:35:09
Speaker
It wasn't his idea originally, but. I'm sure it wasn't his idea. He kind of motivated me. But he told me, so I'm giving him credit.
00:35:20
Speaker
I almost hurt your feelings. I'll tell you what. ah All right. That's good. This is more funny, but I don't know. I don't care what you guys are thinking right now. but This is absolute heaven for me to do this to Dennis. Of course it is. his look right now is like, whoa.
00:35:37
Speaker
It's good. But yeah, I'm getting close on that. Bowie, which will definitely be the last knife for Blade Show. And yeah, then I'm in sheath hell for probably two weeks.
00:35:52
Speaker
That's a lot of sheaths, dude. ah Well, a lot of those knives are folders. um which i really I really appreciate folders that I don't have to do a sheath, and ah they're easy to sharpen.
00:36:05
Speaker
I got one, two, three. This will be four boos. I think I want to get a block, a grip tech. Matt, hit me up, dude. want to see if we can get a block.
00:36:16
Speaker
Does he sell blocks? Of grip tech? Yeah. i Like, I haven't seen it. Maybe I but i just saw the um on Baker's site. Someone did. It was a JB. Somebody did ah a knife with um with a grip tech on it. And it was a hidden tank.
00:36:37
Speaker
Because I think that would be cool. Use the grip tech on there. glue a couple scales the other i don't need to i could just have him make a block oh look he's monster and then i can just no it's not that i'm you know important i'm just trying to transition into a fucking ad read how about how about fuck off

I'm probably going to actually get them all out to my patrons and, um, I might do a video just for them in case I'm for the first time I'm going to put all those knives up for sale to patrons before blade show, and then they'll ship after blade show. So that's the plan. But if you guys want to sell your knives, get them up on the drop point.
00:43:45
Speaker
It's free. Why wouldn't you? Get them up on the drop point. You can even put drops that are coming up so that they don't have to be live. They can be a month from now, whatever you want, put them up in the drop point.
00:43:59
Speaker

00:49:08
Speaker
Okay. Anyways, what are we talking about? How brutal it's going to be, and you're going to decide to go to a baseball game, which is the most boring sport in the world, next to golf. I don't know how you're going to do it.
00:49:23
Speaker
Apparently I just love boring things, including Dennis Terrell, king of fucking boring. So I don't even think anybody's even awake after if I could just listen to you for the past 20 minutes. So, well, why don't you cry about it?
00:49:37
Speaker
No, we can go cry myself to sleep.
00:49:43
Speaker
Anyways, Baker, Forge and Tool makers of the most awesome premium pattern welded steel this week. I just saw a post right now that they have a limited quantity ready to ship of mosaic Damascus.
00:50:02
Speaker
This is a nice pattern. It is really damn cool. I think it was what, 272 or something like that was the number I was hollering? 270 number, mosaic number 272. But Koi, come on get off your ass and give it a name, not a fucking number. What are we, the army?
00:50:17
Speaker
Come on. Hey dude, I don't support that kind of talk. Okay. Okay. Give it some fancy name. I thought you were a marketing genius. Come on. It's 272. What is McDonald's?
00:50:29
Speaker
Order 272. Come on. It's made right there in Boone, North Carolina. I know. its it mean It's pretty. It needs a name.
00:50:40
Speaker
It's ready to ship. Okay? I'm busting your balls, Clay. It takes a lot of time.
00:50:47
Speaker
It looks different. It does. Same quality. Pick the one that fits you fits your build, okay? Yeah, it's a good one. I like it. I like it a lot. It's really cool. I try my best to just kind of hold them off there, Koi.
00:51:01
Speaker
I don't care. it Name the shit. Clean it, etch it, protect it. Get yourself some Gator Piss OG, Gator Max, Gator Heavy. um First, you got to clean it up with the Grime Reaper.
00:51:13
Speaker
Then you dip it in the piss. And then you protect it with the skin. it's Yes. Protect it with the skin. Piss all over it. Yeah. Piss all over it. And then...
00:51:25
Speaker
Yeah. Put that ceramic natto beat off resistant gator skin. Then you can go. Then you can piss on it and see they just to see the piss beat right off. It is it's it's it repel. It's a great repel.

00:52:21
Speaker
Well, when I send him a bill, good thing I'm sending him the bill, not you.
00:52:32
Speaker

00:52:45
Speaker
um ah Somewhere we, I don't think we've ever called out. And I mentioned him a million times. um Mr. Mike Fagnino. who was my master smith that I went through going to journeyman. I have a class with him in August um at Rick Hall's house. so I figured I would call out Mr. Mike Vagnino as a blade maker, folder maker in particular extraordinaire. So yeah, he's always at, um,
00:53:16
Speaker
blade show and texas and just a really cool dude good guy and he's one of he's one of the coolest if not the coolest dude yeah yeah ah still still the funniest when i did my journeyman and uh he you asked him and i view you about him every single time i ever sit down To hand sand anything. That is one of those things that you never know the impact that you have on somebody when you share anything with them. Like what sticks with people. But that right now, him coming down on his glasses, like... If you're going to hand sand, fucking hand sand. If going to hand sand, fucking hand sand. That'll never... just had that conversation with our good friend Brent today.
00:54:04
Speaker
Why? Was he not hand sanding to your logic? I'm not going to say anything more. But I just felt that there was an opportunity to... Brent, are you hearing this? Oh yeah, he's hearing it.
00:54:14
Speaker
He's hearing it. He knows all about it. Jared's reading you the business. It really wasn't that, that, that serious, but, um, he knows what we're talking about. So, but I think about that because, and that's why I share the same feedback with, with, uh,
00:54:30
Speaker
with Mr. Smith because of that day. Awesome maker. Awesome dude. Always look forward to seeing him. It's a damn shame. He lives right by some family in the valley. I got to get out there and just go say hi to him.
00:54:45
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I'm looking forward to this bolster release class. That should be a fun one. Be my first, well, I've done an auto, but it'll be kind of first kind of,
00:54:59
Speaker
Official auto I've learned in a class. I'm learning it the right way instead of muddling through it for hours and hours and days. and Fucking it up a bunch of times. so Looking forward to it.
00:55:12
Speaker
Yeah. So who do you have? That's Mike Vagnino on Instagram. two thousand and michael It's Michael Vagnino on Instagram. It's Michael Vagnino on Instagram.
00:55:27

00:55:40
Speaker
MV Knives. Oh, MV Knives. He has a company. Yeah. That's not the name I'm thinking of.
00:55:50
Speaker
Anyways. Oh, no, MV Knives. That's his website. That's his website. That's his website. No, but he's got a separate company. Like, he does, um like, a production line of knives. Yeah. What is it?
00:56:00
Speaker
I don't remember. It's fucking driving me nuts.
00:56:06
Speaker
I'm looking on his website, and I don't remember. Terrain 365, those? Yeah. Yep, Terrain 365. Yeah. Yeah. yep terrain three sixty five ye ye So that they make blades that are like 100% rust proof, non magnetic, because they're not um it's a special Uh, dendritic cobalt.
00:56:29
Speaker
So it's not actually, um, steel. ah The knives are dendritic. Uh, I became intrigued with dendritic steels and dendritic cobalt. So that's what those terrain 365 knives are made from.
00:56:43
Speaker
It's pretty cool. You can see them at a blade show that you should he has it a booth just for train 365. Yep.
00:56:52
Speaker
ah Yep. Yep. Cool.
00:56:58
Speaker
All right, who do you have? um I have... The name is Wooden Rail Workshop. Rob DeMarco.
00:57:10
Speaker
So we just um had the... the um God, I'm blanking the fundraiser. Yeah. The fundraiser for Bob Gore, um, had a little waffle and, um, obviously wanted to support our, our buddy, Bob.
00:57:30
Speaker
And, I was lucky enough to, get my name drawn for Mr. DeMarco's, uh, pen. So he's a he turns pens and, there's a whole bunch of other stuff. I was looking through the, uh,
00:57:47
Speaker
through his site. Anyways, it's Wooden Rail Workshop. Rob DeMarco. He's only got 189 followers. So let's let's step that up. But he I won three pens and am a pen whore.
00:58:04
Speaker
Like if there really was a pen island, i would I would be a subscriber to it. That's a good joke. um So look that up. Yeah, penisland.com.
00:58:18
Speaker
ah But look, on all seriousness, I have this thing with pens, and I you know i bought the the tactical turn pen at Blade a couple years ago. Spend a fuck ton more money than anyone should spend on a pen. i still have that one.
00:58:35
Speaker
But I got these three awesome pens hand turned. I am fucking through the moon with these things. um And he also...
00:58:47
Speaker
Ooh, where'd it go? um Was very kind and threw in a ah very unique bottle opener with some, what is it called?
