Denis Tyrell: Hello everyone, welcome to an episode of the Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. I know you missed us last week, but we got a lot of stuff to talk about. i am here as always with my friend, my buddy, Mr. Jared Sandoval from Echo Blades, who pretty much joined me for the last two weeks, except for a short little interlude.
Denis Tyrell: um yeah it's been a while we got a lot to talk about jared
echo_blades: Yeah, we do. It was quite the role, for sure. we were pushing pretty hard. I've been, I know that.
Denis Tyrell: yeah yeah man yeah i mean uh where do we start i i guess with the the lead up to blade show and uh getting to blade show
echo_blades: Yeah. i Perfect timing, my wife just texted me.
echo_blades: It's great podcasting right now.
Denis Tyrell: Very important.
Denis Tyrell: We're starting with magic.
echo_blades: Yeah, it's just fucking right out the gate. Pure fire.
echo_blades: He's sleeping on.
Denis Tyrell: Well, folks, here it is.
echo_blades: That's right.
Denis Tyrell: Professionalism at its best. Yeah.
echo_blades: Well, I just wanted to give him, I just wanted to give him a little bit bit of rest from that overly exciting intro. mean, he blew their fucking socks off. I just needed them to catch their breath, get back down to earth.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: And here we are. All right, I'm back. Let's roll. So yeah, we did the ah the whole blade show ah travel again, um which translates to insomnia
Denis Tyrell: well
Denis Tyrell: well well insomnia you're talking about the first day uh the flight there because yeah because it is it is a red eye flight but some of us uh had a nice seat on the plane we got
echo_blades: for me.
echo_blades: Yeah.
echo_blades: Cause what?
echo_blades: Oh, I see where this is going.
Denis Tyrell: and got to wave wave at Jared as he was filed off to coach.
echo_blades: I see where this is going.
Denis Tyrell: um And I had a beautiful, beautiful seat in first class.
echo_blades: Which I, ah
echo_blades: yeah, you did. You left me. You ritzy, bougie ass, retired, not struggling knife maker.
Denis Tyrell: Worth every penny.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was great. Enjoyed the flight immensely, but still didn't sleep much.
echo_blades: I had zero, I had zero desire to do it. And then, When we got there, I had checked the day before to see if the prices had come down any any bit.
echo_blades: And there was still quite a bit of availability there. And then by the time we got to the gate, when I was really starting to think about it, ah ever ever it was all gone and I was i was screwed. So back to 34D I went or whatever the hell it
Denis Tyrell: I think you were even further back. You were like 38 or something. Ridiculous.
echo_blades: No, I think it was 34.
Denis Tyrell: That was Parker's. Yeah, Parker was in 38 on the way home.
echo_blades: Yeah, it was like 34 or
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: So.
Denis Tyrell: But we got there even though it was a red-eye flight. Earlier than normal, ah bright five a 5 a.m. That was a long day because we didn't get in.
echo_blades: Yeah. It was like 5 30.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Yeah, and then we set up the table and then
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: unlike last year, there was some event, baseball game or something, right? So we didn't, the hotel rooms were all packed. So we didn't get the hotel room till what? 3.30? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah, it was almost four o'clock.
Denis Tyrell: yeah
echo_blades: Yeah, it was almost four o'clock. And the the thing that you forget to tell everybody is that she had a little snotty nose when you before we took off.
Denis Tyrell: yeah
echo_blades: And I was just like, oh, my God. ah So you get a you get this combination here. i I think that we cannot, I cannot let this go unspoken about.
echo_blades: But we go...
Denis Tyrell: I know what you're going to say.
echo_blades: We go across the country. We don't sleep. We get up, we go to breakfast. and And oddly enough, like I haven't seen you in in a minute. because Oh, that's right. Because I was sick the week before. and du it was just a lot. been real busy. I was traveling. and leading up to the show. And so we get down, we sit down to breakfast and I'm Raz and Dennis and fucking kind of says something to me.
echo_blades: And then snapped back it at you and basically was like, you, he's like, quit being a bitch. And I'm like, motherfucker, you quit being a bitch, you little sick guy. And we have this little kind of like, Okay. All right. Got that out of our way. And I think that was the last time, except for what I'll talk about in our mid, mid evening fights. But other than that, we were pretty much a buddy old pals, but yeah, that was pretty cool. I appreciate, appreciate just a you getting to pop off and me popping back and then this eating grits and pancakes and going about our merry way. Yeah.
echo_blades: It was a little tenser for a second, but yeah. And then we, uh, yeah, that that was a bummer because the year before, ah we were able to get a room like about 11 o'clock and get the nap in a lot earlier.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that was really nice. I was i was ah almost counting on that nap, and it never happened.
echo_blades: Same. Nope. And we were just kind of, I think of the last hour we were in the lobby
Denis Tyrell: Actually, that's not true. and You had an hour and a half between like four and six.
echo_blades: No, we did nap eventually, but I was saying like getting there.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, yeah, we... we
echo_blades: Yeah. It was like, I think the last hour before we when we were waiting for the room, we were with Brent and everybody kind of half nodding out on the beanbags in the lobby waiting for the room.
Denis Tyrell: right yeah
echo_blades: But yeah. And then I remember telling Dennis, man, dude, I don't even think I can. a And I was out like a light.
Denis Tyrell: that was funny you were like you're like yeah i don't think i'm gonna be able to sleep and it was like i'm not even a minute later and you were out might have been the most sleep you got
echo_blades: I don't even think I finished the sentence.
echo_blades: I was gone. Yeah. 100% and bastard oh But yeah, then, I mean, it and then we did our normal, uh, our normal thing. We went over and, uh,
echo_blades: headed over to, uh, Neil's house and had a, uh, had a good time over there. Got to catch up with a bunch of people. And, uh, myself had a wonderful, absolutely great conversation with the fellow golfer, uh, Mr. Colton, the barbell blacksmith, uh, which was surprising to me because I had no idea that, um, that he golfed, but, um,
echo_blades: Yeah, so we started chatting around, and he's a damn good golfer, too. But and ah other than that, being having a cool golf conversation with somebody, and that I was 100% geared up to to get the normal jokes thrown at me about golf.
echo_blades: um Man, I had a conversation with him and Tucker... from, i think it's Cobalt. Sorry, brother, if i if I'm forgetting it, but two younger guys, I think they're 25, maybe 26, 27 at the most in age.
echo_blades: And man, I just, a huge shout out because having about an hour of Conversation with Colton and then think Tucker joined in a little while later.
echo_blades: But man, those two young men just kind of gave me some hope for our youth. Like it was it was not a conversation that I was expecting to have, um you know, because I forget I'm I'm getting up there in age and.
echo_blades: ah But to see and hear two guys, you know great makers, um but just talk about their the business, their plans, their kind of like life goals.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, you're old.
echo_blades: And just like just two solid dudes, great heads on their shoulders, good vision, good character. Like, I mean, it it was an actually a very refreshing conversation to have, um you know, because I in the real world, I deal with some younger people and sometimes, you know, I see, um, less than good character, you know, not, not overall. I'm not trying to be disparaging towards anybody. Uh,
echo_blades: but there's, there's a lot of times where I just kind of shake my head. Like, Oh God, I wish I'm not sure they get it yet. You know, maybe they have some, some growing up to do or something. It would be like having a conversation with me at that age.
echo_blades: So like, I'm not throwing darts and, and calling the kettle black at any means.
Denis Tyrell: He's just going to say.
echo_blades: Cause I sure as shit didn't have anything like, uh, together at that that age and um but yeah i just shout out to you guys man it was it was a cool conversation i really enjoyed it um and then continued on to you know just have ah have another great evening and a good get together with some people that we uh don't get to see very often on a in a different and it's always good um in that little setting prior to the blade show right when the shit starts rolling full steam and everybody's you know they're they're
echo_blades: It's the calm before the storm, I guess is what I'm saying. So cool, enjoyable lot of people.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was fun. and I had a good time at Neil's. Talked to a whole ton of people. um Yeah. and Talking to Toby and Leland a lot and Matt from Grip Tech and just the whole gang.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was good. It was good time.
echo_blades: Yeah, had some great times with Koi and Matt.
Denis Tyrell: Koi, yes.
echo_blades: Yeah, that's good stuff.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was good. It was good. And then... ah Yeah, and and then Thursday night Parker arrived, so i waited up for him. i think you you crashed a bit early, right?
echo_blades: I don't think we did. no we did not.
Denis Tyrell: Were you there when Parker came in?
echo_blades: Cause yeah, yeah, I was there.
Denis Tyrell: I thought you were already in one.
echo_blades: Cause you guys fricking forced me to go to the a waffle house.
Denis Tyrell: Oh, I i'm I'm getting my Waffle House nights confused.
echo_blades: Yeah. and Yeah. Dennis yeah. Yeah. Long story short. I got my arm twisted to go to Waffle House and I was done and I didn't really want to. And they're like, come on.
echo_blades: And then we end up at the wrong Waffle House.
Denis Tyrell: No, no, that was doubt that was the second night.
echo_blades: And for whatever reason, for whatever reason. m
echo_blades: Was it?
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that was with Lawrence. That was the second night.
echo_blades: Oh, you're right.
Denis Tyrell: No, the first night was very successful.
echo_blades: You're right.
Denis Tyrell: That was a very successful trip to Waffle House.
echo_blades: Oh, and I didn't go.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was just me and Parker. You're you're thinking of the, yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah, that's right. Oh, okay.
Denis Tyrell: Parker and I went to Waffle House.
echo_blades: That's the next thing.
Denis Tyrell: ah You were in bed. And, yeah, we got in at like one or something like that. And, yeah, then ready for the day one of the of Blade Show, which was good.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: did you like to Did you like the new setup? I didn't really talk to you about it. The the table setup, I mean?
echo_blades: No, I, and well, no, we didn't talk about it.
Denis Tyrell: No, you didn't know?
echo_blades: Yeah, I couldn't, yeah my honestly, I don't know. and I think that we were fortunate enough to to land around some good people again.
echo_blades: um That was super, awesome. Um, I had a lot of anxiety around that because just that's the kind of person I am, uh, especially having been around the same people for, you know, four years or three or four years like that. Um, basically the same.
echo_blades: Um, but yeah, we, we, we lucked out again, had some cool people around us. Um, and then,
echo_blades: I think it's like the theme of the show. I can't figure out if it was our the or location or if it was just the actual show was kind of different this year.
echo_blades: Wasn't a big fan of that big ass pillar right in front of us, but, um
Denis Tyrell: Right. Yeah. I knew that was there. I saw that on the map when I saw my table.
echo_blades: but for every time I talk to anybody, um the, the, the overhead banner that you had, was visible from all over the place. So if you knew where we were, i don't think it was problem finding us.
echo_blades: um But I don't know about like the the new people, just like the the traffic. So now I'm curious about your opinion about that too, because this show, ah i didn't, I didn't get,
echo_blades: I didn't spend a lot of time at the table. i I kind of continuously roamed more regularly than I have in the past.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, in fact, and and I did the opposite. I stayed at the table. I did very little. I didn't even hit all of the tables, which is like first time ever that I haven't at least gone down every row and um at least briefly. I didn't even make the rounds um to all the tables.
Denis Tyrell: So that I kind of regret not not going. I didn't make it over to the even heat. I was over at even heat, but it was before the show started and the guys weren't down yet.
Denis Tyrell: um But when the show was open, I was trying to stay at the table a lot. Um, but I did think, I think overall, I'm curious what the numbers were, but it felt like traffic was down this year.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: yeah. Yeah.
echo_blades: The best way I can describe it is all the years prior, no matter all of the years, it's always been a kind of a slow go, especially on Friday.
echo_blades: But then we would hit these like big waves of people where we we get stuck in, you know, just interactions with with people for an hour or two at a time. And then you get a little bit of break.
echo_blades: And then you'd get another big wave, especially on Saturday. It's like there was ah it's like moments of these like large waves and a lot of people nonstop talking.
echo_blades: And then it would chill out for a second. And then we' get these waves. And I don't think we ever got that huge wave. It was just like a so steady, slow crawl of people for the times I was there.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I mean, there was one point there's one point saturday around like eleven eleven thirty that we got a decent size um you know, group around the table, but Sunday was a ghost town.
echo_blades: Oh, I wasn't there.
Denis Tyrell: Like, yeah, like we might as well have not shown up on Sunday.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Like it was really everyone, like the whole show was super like quieter than I've ever seen it.
echo_blades: Did you get a notification that you had to be at your table throughout the whole show?
Denis Tyrell: No. Well, that's always, that's part of your contract.
echo_blades: Oh, okay.
Denis Tyrell: I didn't get any like extra notification or anything.
echo_blades: I guess because...
echo_blades: Yeah, because I heard... um the the booths anyways that there was some heavy emphasis on them not wrapping up and bailing early on Sunday like a little more than normal yeah
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, but that's that's always part of, oh more than, don't know. I didn't get anything extra.
echo_blades: okay but you stayed for for the entirety
Denis Tyrell: We started breaking down at like, quarter to 12 even though it was open till 2 and then actually it was probably 12 30 we started breaking down and we were we just headed out at like one like quarter to one I think we were done because there was nobody like everyone almost everyone was breaking down at that point even though the show didn't close till 2
echo_blades: gotcha
echo_blades: Gotcha. Okay. Gotcha.
Denis Tyrell: but as far as like the table set up how did you think the display went yeah
echo_blades: I think it was good. Yeah. I liked it. I think you had a ah good thing. um
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, other than...
echo_blades: I think you learned your lesson. Yeah. I think you learned your lesson the hard way. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: So for everyone, if you watch the video, I had like the knives on these on these like on these magnetic boards at like 45 degree angles. But what I didn't consider is standing behind those you have all these blades, they're in a 45 degree angle pointed right at your head and people want to shake your hand and you have to reach over this well like death contraption.
Denis Tyrell: And i was I was trying not to do it and like going to the side and shaking people's people's hand. And at one point, Saturday afternoon, a guy handed me like a knife to look at and I quickly grabbed it And I impaled myself.
Denis Tyrell: I'm actually really lucky. It didn't hit. Like if i I'm looking at it right here and it's like, I can feel the tendon right here and attended right. And it just, it went in the tip of the knife.
Denis Tyrell: Like this gash is like three quarters of an inch wide. So the blade went in probably three quarters of an inch, like the tip.
echo_blades: It was a lot worse than it looked like because I watched it happen. um and And I didn't think you like made ah any different kind of move, but it just it just worked out to where it' was just like you perfectly jabbed yourself.
echo_blades: but like And you reacted kind of like nonchalantly.
Denis Tyrell: yeah
echo_blades: Um, and then when we were trying to tape you up, that's when I, you were like, you had one, you had to like covered and then you like looked it up and I was like, Oh shit, that looks like that might, we might need to glue this or something.
Denis Tyrell: It definitely could have used too like a stitch or two for sure. I mean, I managed to like like bandaid it together tightly so that it it it did heal.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: It looks a little goofy now, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to a scar there.
echo_blades: Oh, for sure.
Denis Tyrell: um Yeah, but next time I use that, the handles will going be going up and the tips will be going down. Um, which is what I did Sunday and, uh, it was a lot safer.
Denis Tyrell: and it still looked fine.
echo_blades: i mean, even when you had to lower them, it was decent. Like, when there was only like an inch or so of the blade sticking up, that was probably a lot more manageable than what we originally had.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: But, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. It was actually, what when I flipped it the other way, it's actually better because the blades are closer to people for them to see the blades and then they can still grab the handle.
echo_blades: But thank God. ahead.
Denis Tyrell: So it actually works out better. that the handles are up. It's safer for me. um So that's way I'll be doing it next time I use those.

Denis Tyrell: And I even said, as soon as I put them up there, this is dangerous.

echo_blades: And, yeah, we... We ran through one full one trying to get you to stop bleeding.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, and i ending and pretty much the second one the next day.
echo_blades: Yeah. And then we had to go back. Yeah. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: I didn't get mine until after, but, uh, they're really cool.
echo_blades: They literally showed up the day i got home.
Denis Tyrell: Huh?
echo_blades: but So, yeah, the the day i came home, they were there when when I woke up the the next morning.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: So that they didn't come in until when Tuesday after Blade Show, which is a bummer. Yeah. Because he let me know, like,
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, they're beautiful.
echo_blades: three weeks before that that he had ordered them, but they just, they didn't get there in time. Yeah. It was really cool. Great idea. Super sweet. I thought we would have been styling and pimping all through blade show. If we were able to, to rock those shirts though, cause they're, they're damn cool.
echo_blades: Oh, it's a bummer.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Yeah. I'll be wearing mine in Austria, so everyone will see it if they go to Austria.
echo_blades: Yeah. Everyone, everyone, everyone's going.
Denis Tyrell: Everyone. All the cool people that go.

Denis Tyrell: oh But the show went well, sold a few knives, um plus the pre-sold one, the pre-sale ones. So overall, the show was very good.
Denis Tyrell: And now I need to ship all those knives out tomorrow. But um yeah, went really well. Happy. Got some professional photos taken from Josh Lynn Fraser. So I'm anxious to see what those look like.
Denis Tyrell: And yeah, overall, it was really good show.
echo_blades: Yeah, I can't.
Denis Tyrell: Had really fun time at the pit with all all the folks out there.
echo_blades: Always.
Denis Tyrell: Donnie D and the whiskey table was a big hit as usual. um Yeah, had some good conversations out there. Any other highlights from the show you want to mention?
echo_blades: Yeah, I got myself a ah a sweet Wiener Smith ah Swiss Army knife um from Blade HQ. and And I got this little this little, yeah, it's like a little Swiss Army thing, but it's a glizzy.
echo_blades: And na I could not not buy this thing. And I came back. When I got it, i basically walked in. It was on the complete opposite end of the show from us.
echo_blades: um Literally on the on the complete opposite end. And I came back holding this thing up. And every person that I saw, I stopped and showed and just professed my undying love for the glizzy.
echo_blades: And i ended up probably getting about seven or eight of them sold just for me coming back talking.
Denis Tyrell: How come you're good at selling other people's knives and not your own?
echo_blades: I don't know.
Denis Tyrell: What the hell?
echo_blades: It's probably because this was a fucking, this probably because I had, uh, this was super cheap little knife. Um, and there wasn't a guy on the table that kept dropping the knife that was right before me in price.
Denis Tyrell: and ah
echo_blades: Maybe,
Denis Tyrell: Parker, Parker did. i think he bought that glizzy before you did.
echo_blades: No.
Denis Tyrell: Are you sure? I thought i thought swore he showed it to me like Saturday morning.
echo_blades: No.
echo_blades: No. No. Not even close.
Denis Tyrell: Okay.
echo_blades: No.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, Parker was trying really hard to sell that Damascus spike knife, but to no avail. to
echo_blades: Yeah, I mean, I had a ton of people pick my knife up, and I thought it was going to go ah a bunch of times. it I ended up taking it home with me, but...
Denis Tyrell: I swear I had it sold twice.
echo_blades: Yeah, you had some interactions with it, but yeah, this it didn't go. But then I'm joking, I'm busting Dennis' balls because – The knives were similarly priced, and then I come back the next day, and that spike knife dropped $25, and the next day it dropped. And I'm like, bro, that's like unwritten table mate rules.
echo_blades: You're trying to get me. But I was surprised they both – I could have, but I take my my suggestions from Micah.
Denis Tyrell: You have dropped yours.
echo_blades: He says, don't ever do that. Take it back home with you. It'll sell the next time. So. ah yeah But yeah, that was cool. But I didn't have any... That wasn't the the reason for being there. So it wasn't a big deal on my side. But I mean, more than anything, I think the highlight for me is always, for since we've been doing this show, is running into talking to all the listeners, getting incredibly uncomfortably good feedback from people. And I just...
echo_blades: you know and i just If I had the opportunity to talk to you, and I'm sure Dennis as well, we appreciate you guys so much. um it I want to say it makes it all worth it because it's not like this is a huge amount of effort, but it is always great to hear that you know what we're doing is is appreciated and that we're doing a fairly decent job.
echo_blades: Um, I had some really cool talks with, uh, uh, actually more people than I expected about, um, the, the last show that we did about my son graduating. And apparently I kind of got borderline a little emotional and, a couple of people come up to me and said that, you know, that I had was getting them there too, um which I thought was really cool. Cause you know, I forget, you know, we're here talking and bullshit and doing our thing, but you know, there there's seven people, six, seven on a good day that actually listened to us. And so it is really awesome. We appreciate you guys and appreciate you taking the time to, to let us know that it's it's awesome to hear.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it's super fun talking to folks. And I had so many people come up and say, oh, they love the videos and they love the podcast. And, you know, it was, yeah, it was, it's super fun.
Denis Tyrell: I love talking to folks about that stuff and what they like to make. And, uh, yeah, it was, it was great show for that, uh, from that aspect.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Um, but I'm not so on the traffic stuff. I mean, kind of expected things to start slowing down. So maybe this is the you know, maybe this is it. Um, we're going to start to see the ah traffic at the shows, um, decline, but the odd number, odd thing is we didn't, I, someone said, I didn't really notice it, but someone said the tables were a little further apart, like as if there was not as many tables, but there was the same table number. So I don't get that. I wonder if they just rearrange things.
echo_blades: Yeah. I don't know. I didn't notice any less makers for sure.
Denis Tyrell: Right, and and that's...
echo_blades: i know there was a ham i hate it handful of people that weren't there, but I know that was kind of preplanned, but um no, I didn't get that at all.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. mean, we'll see, because if fewer and fewer people go to Blade Show, or as many makers going to go, it's going to turn into a, you know, a B2B show for makers pretty soon if we don't get the... um you know, the attendees, but I think that this year was the first time they had that arts and metal show.
Denis Tyrell: So i'm wondering, you know, if that did have an impact on, especially the higher end makers, um, you know, not as many collectors kind of thing.
echo_blades: Yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah. Very well could be, man. And I'll be lying to you if I've, if I had any idea of what the recipe was and what was going. Um, I'd, yeah, I'd make a lot more knives, but I certainly don't. But I will say though, that it's very, very consistently, you're going to get the people that got their ass handed to them, didn't do anything. And then there's always the other side of that where they had the best shows they've ever had, you know?

And and it's partially my fault because i didn't bring appropriate PPE to the party. Normally we have earplugs or i have some headphones or something to do. i didn't have nothing. And I just had to freaking bear the, uh, the storm. So,
Denis Tyrell: My earplugs were working so good, i didn't even hear Parker in the bed beside me.
echo_blades: Yeah, it must have been some some some high quality freaking decibel reduction because I'm surprised.

echo_blades: I know there were some floors above us. i don't think they're there anymore, but sorry, but the Waverly is now only 12 stories.
echo_blades: The other thing um I found out too, is that apparently um I've heard this for, for a long time now, but when we were uploading our shows, it was coming in as audio as video and causing some people problems to, uh, they couldn't hear it.
echo_blades: And apparently.
Denis Tyrell: Or they couldn't listen to it in the car is the first time i had heard it, heard that issue.
echo_blades: Okay. Yeah. Cause I know, they keep saying, and then i remember the the handful of times that I've uploaded this show. I'm like, man, this is the same direction he's given me. And it it clearly says,
echo_blades: audio only, but somehow it was coming out to, uh, to video, but I guess Dennis, was able to reach out to, uh, Zencaster and get that all worked out. So it looks like that's been taken care of now. So
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. I don't know why that's not a setting. You actually have to call their tech support and get them to switch it off on your channel, which is really dumb. But yeah, it is resolved.

echo_blades: Yeah. And then Sunday I bailed out. My buddy picked me up around nine o'clock and I drove four hours to Charlotte and had a really good time.
echo_blades: um Golfed three times. um So there's a restaurant. and So I didn't get to take Toby there, but if anybody comes to visit, there's a spot in the town that I grew up in that has the most amazing banana shakes, and there's a burrito spot right next to them. So I i always, if anybody's coming to visit, I always take them there.
echo_blades: um So i have this thing for for banana shakes. There's a restaurant down there in the south called Cookout. Have you ever been?
echo_blades: You ever heard of it, seen it?

echo_blades: Yeah, it's called Cookout. um And i remember the first last year when I went, I go into the place and they have the the food is like the cheapest shit I've ever seen in my life.

echo_blades: three bucks for a hamburger. Like, I mean, I, it was so cheap. I felt like saying, all right, restaurant, this one's on me. Cause there was no, no other time in my life. am I going to be able to buy a bunch of people's dinner like that? But, uh, yeah, the, the, it's, it's amazingly, uh, not that much money or it was, but the, but the milkshakes are like,
echo_blades: six bucks. They're like double, triple the cost of the hot dogs, but, uh, they have a banana shake there. And man, I had like three of those fuckers while I was there. That was like, it was awesome.
echo_blades: Um, cause I really didn't, we didn't really have any over the top good food this, this trip at all that that I can recall.
Denis Tyrell: Well, I thought the steakhouse was pretty good.
echo_blades: it was okay. Yeah. It wasn't bad.

echo_blades: Um, but yeah, that the banana shakes was, was the killer for me. And then we had, uh, another on all you can eat sushi, which again, i don't, it's the second place now that I've ran into that, but it's not a thing here, but apparently exist in, in Charlotte and Reno from what I understand.
echo_blades: Um, But yeah, did a bunch of golfing, ah which was really fun. Hung out with a couple of my buddies. and um Dude, humidity is horrible.

Denis Tyrell: You can only take so many showers a day. That's how I feel in humidity. like It's like you take a shower and 20 minutes later you feel disgusting already. I don't have...
echo_blades: it wasn't even that. Yeah. I get, yeah. a hundred percent. Like there's no escaping it and Like it wasn't even that bad. It wasn't like Florida, like Florida's the the worst I've ever been in through all the islands I've been through all the Caribbean and all those places, Florida, the time I spent in Florida, that was the most God awful shit I've ever experienced. So this wasn't bad, like that bad, but it was, it was definitely there. um i mean, at one point we golfed the the Sunday night, we did ah like a twilight round.
echo_blades: Um, and we were out on the golf course till like fucking nine o'clock. And I was, was the first time I've ever golfed in a tank top. Um, I went in there and I, apparently, ah yeah, it was a nice place.

echo_blades: Uh, I was surprised, but I went in there. I was actually so conscious about it that I went and I bought a polo inside the the place. And I was just like, Oh yeah.
echo_blades: And they're like, Oh, you're just going to put that on. You want the, the guy said, oh you're going to, you want me to take the tags off so you can wear it? And i was like, Yeah. So I just, but I walked out, I teed off and got a couple holes down and I was like, fuck this. But I was literally in the car, just driving in circles in the fairway, just trying to keep the wind blowing on me. Cause just to get some, the, the, it felt like an air conditioner cause it's all sticky and the wind had a little small breeze, but yeah, it was, it was shitty, dude.

Denis Tyrell: and uh yeah they uh came back primarily you know to hang out with us but uh to do a folder class so we spent a the first day we just relaxed for the morning did a little hot tubbing a little swimming and then we went in the shop we spent most of tuesday in the shop um just getting those folders done and then wednesday morning and then when you got there we just We just leisure.

echo_blades: Um, so it was cool. Did a pier 39 walk the Embarcadero, which that place is toned down a lot. They, they redid it.

Denis Tyrell: No, they've redone the most of the ports on that side. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: ah Toby did awesome. He got, I mean, he fell down once, but he got right up pretty much surfing the wave.

Denis Tyrell: um Yeah, he did really well. And Leland as well.
echo_blades: And Leland did awesome too. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Leland got up and yeah, it was, it took him a be few tries, but that's normal um for the first time trying to get up there. But yeah, it was a good time.
echo_blades: Yeah. I didn't just for clarity here and full transparency. i did not get to wake surf. Um, and I got dragged by the boat,
echo_blades: but, uh, yeah, it was cool.
Denis Tyrell: I'm being nice.
echo_blades: Wow. It is what it is
Denis Tyrell: No, it is it is purely a technique thing. And until you learn that technique, um you know, you're just going to do it wrong. And...
echo_blades: It's hilarious because you can watch other people do it and you can hear the instruction. Right. And it's great because it all makes sense. And then you get out there and all I could hear was.
echo_blades: Yeah, no, you can hear shit.
Denis Tyrell: The same instruction?
echo_blades: And then it's like, put it in gear. And then all of a sudden it's like, yeah. And then they just like, I was getting dragged.
Denis Tyrell: It was like, it's like when you're sitting on the boat and you're watching someone like having a hard time, it's like, you want to video it and show it to them and say, look what you're doing because you can tell them all you want, like sit back on your butt and like, don't lean for like anything you tell them, you just have to work it out for yourself.
echo_blades: It was cool.
echo_blades: You have to do exactly the opposite of what you think you need to do.
Denis Tyrell: Yes.
echo_blades: it's It's like instinctually, you want to straighten your legs and lean forward. and that
Denis Tyrell: and stand up. Everyone wants to stand up really quick and you can't do that.
echo_blades: Yeah. there But yeah, that was cool.

echo_blades: And the only reason why I went was because Leland asked me to go. So shout out to Leland.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. But that was, pretty that was really fun. That was a good day. And, uh, yeah, they took off. Um, Well, they finished their knives Sunday morning. Then you came over.
Denis Tyrell: We had another little pool session and relaxed and, yeah, just kind of hung out.
echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: And they they took off last night.
echo_blades: yeah
Denis Tyrell: And he already made it back. So it was it was super fun having them here and, you know, just hanging out and listening all the funny stories that Toby has. And just he's a cool guy.
Denis Tyrell: So it was really fun having them in the shop, having them at the house and yeah, just showing them the California stuff. um So yeah, it was a great visit and I'd love to head over to England at some point and, you know, be the foreigners over there.
echo_blades: Absolutely. I do. I had, ah I had a blast, dude. I think it's just, uh, another awesome example of, uh, of, uh, of a community bringing people that would never be together for any reason.
echo_blades: um you know, brings us together. You're building bond, you're building friendships, you're, you know, it just, I, I, I can't, Yeah, I had a great time. um And Toby's an awesome dude Leland's an awesome kid.
echo_blades: um A real trooper. um And like i said, I had some really cool really cool moments, some great conversations, a lot of laughs.
echo_blades: And and um like you said, I'm looking forward to the next time. um And yeah, it would be really cool to get out that way, though. But the fact that I went to sleep last night at about seven o'clock.
Denis Tyrell: Mm-hmm.
echo_blades: So I fell asleep. I woke up at five and ah started doing some math and I was like, those dudes are still not even home yet.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Well, they, it was a 10 hour flight and they got on that flight at like at midnight. So yeah, they were not even home yet. They didn't get home until it would have been 10 AM hour time this morning.
echo_blades: What was it actually?
Denis Tyrell: Cause he was texting me around one o'clock, uh, that they were like on their way and on the train and whatever.
echo_blades: Yeah, I texted him at like 11.
Denis Tyrell: So.
echo_blades: like just before 11. And he'd said 11. Yeah, just like 11 that he was just landed and they were still on the plane.
echo_blades: So i was like, oof. I mean, that that's a long-ass flight. That doesn't sound fun.
Denis Tyrell: No, not fun at all. That's why, uh, uh, what is it called?
echo_blades: No.
Denis Tyrell: Uh, premium economy and first class are made for flights like that.
echo_blades: Absolutely.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. That's, uh, one of the reasons we're taking the premium economy to Austria so that we don't have a crappy seats for those flights.

Denis Tyrell: Well, um, back to work now. i got to figure out what I'm going to make. You know, um I got to figure out what, um, sorry, my computer's binging away here. Um, I got to figure out what I'm going to make next. Uh,
Denis Tyrell: So I have a class. i I may have a class Thursday. I definitely have a class Sunday. um Just an intro class. I'm going to try and finish the folder that I was working on while they were here. Yeah,
Denis Tyrell: yeah I think I'm going to start a new Damascus project um later this week. It's supposed to cool off, um which is why Friday I think it's going to be, know, 80, which is not bad.

Denis Tyrell: yeah yeah so it's supposed to cool down thursday friday um so i think i'm gonna get some damascus done and then and then um A yeah two weeks from now, I've got, uh, Jaden from, uh, Wolf River.
Denis Tyrell: Why am I forgetting his, think that's right. And, um, Noah from Antiat River Forge will be here for a folder class. Uh, not this coming Friday, but next Friday.

Denis Tyrell: You, you've been hiding that one from me. I've never seen that tool in your shop or I would have, uh, uh, I would have stole it earlier.

Denis Tyrell: Uh, I've been, um, I've been looking to get a variable speed drill press, one that you don't have to like change the wheels on.

Denis Tyrell: and I go to Jared's house and lo and behold, the man has a variable speed jet drill press, um, which I was very envious of.
Denis Tyrell: And then I went home and I looked and there are only like so
echo_blades: for a about a day. And then you win.
Denis Tyrell: No, seriously. I ordered it yesterday, Sunday morning, and it got here today, Monday. I already have it put together and in the shop and I've already used it.
echo_blades: Wow.
Denis Tyrell: So it was only 600 bucks. So I was, I was amazed how cheap they were for like a jet drill press.
echo_blades: Yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah. I think I got, yeah. I think I got mine for like 200 bucks on the marketplace.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, there was a guy in like Sacramento that had one for like 325. But if I wanted to get it, I wouldn't have been able to get it till like today.
echo_blades: That's.
Denis Tyrell: And I would have drive all the way to Sacramento and it would have been gone.
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: Yeah.

echo_blades: My I lucked out. I was i had a day off. It was here in Discovery Bay. um And yeah, I was able to pounce right on it and grab it up.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I put the DRO on it. I moved the DRO from the Shop Fox over to that one. Works great. oh

Denis Tyrell: But, um, uh, but yeah, got that set up, getting ready for, um, for Noah and, um, Jaden in a couple of weeks, got a couple classes before then.

Denis Tyrell: So yeah, it's, we're, we're back at it. I got to get some stock for Austria.

echo_blades: Yeah. I had an interesting day. Just that. i mean, you you remember, you remember what it's like. Yeah. He takes some time off and this was, this was quite a bit.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, the the first day back sucks.
echo_blades: It's going to be like this for a couple days. But I am so i'm super grateful. I have a great team. um Nothing crazy went on. I'm left in good hands and everything was kind of still the same.
echo_blades: we just had a pretty extensive like move remodel thing going on. So it was, it was a shitty time to, to be away. Um, but yeah, it'll be fine.
echo_blades: And now I'm, uh, got, uh, a talk with my neighbors. They're going to pick out some handle material for, um,
echo_blades: I got ah for a couple for, that'll be two, two knives there. Yeah. And then now that Jared's, um,
echo_blades: graduated and, uh, and working, um, I'll have some more time in the shop and, um, yeah. So I'm looking to start making some, some progress there and wrapping all the shit that I have hanging out.
echo_blades: Um, But first I'm in the midst of planning a, uh, a golf trip with Jared. Um, I don't know yet.
Denis Tyrell: Really? Where are you going?
echo_blades: Um, there's too many options, but I do want to, uh,
echo_blades: take him out for, for, you know, a little graduation gift. Um, and we'll probably go on like a three or four day trip out somewhere. I haven't came. I don't, I don't know if I want to do like a resort and go stay at one place and golf. There's a lot of places have, you know, multiple golf courses, or if we want to just hit the road and kind of see what we can. uh, but that's what I'm trying to put together right now. Um, there's actually a couple, some,
echo_blades: people that'll help plan it. The worst part about that is like trying to plan golf in advance in places that you don't know.
Denis Tyrell: Is this something you're going to do in the next month or two or what?
echo_blades: It's you can't like book tee times that far out. So it's like, you're kind of rolling the dice with like trying to make a plan and then, you know, not being able to secure it for sure.
echo_blades: time. And, um, uh, I'm yeah. Beginning in July.
Denis Tyrell: Oh, wow. Oh, really soon.
echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: can always do Palm Springs.
echo_blades: Yeah. It's hot though.

echo_blades: It's hot. Yeah. So we were thinking San Diego. There's some places and in, in, uh, there's a really cool place that I'm looking for up in, uh, called the Wolf Creek in, uh, Mesquite, Nevada.
echo_blades: And on the Utah border, uh, up in the mountains, um, that has some really cool, really cool stuff.
Denis Tyrell: Okay.
echo_blades: I'm really leaning towards that. So anyways, but yeah, that's, that's that. Um, and then just like, Looking forward to ah being home. um It's been an exhausting trip, to say the least. Like I said, i don't I don't fall asleep at 7 o'clock very often. So that was just pure exhaustion. I was the at the house on Sunday right before I left. I was just like, I am toast, dude.
echo_blades: So it would be good to hang out with the with Mama and get back in the swing of work and then leave again. would be great.

But ah yeah, he's a journeyman, ABS journeyman. um But yeah, he ah we get in these conversations with people and i think we can all relate to the to the one a conversation where you get a guy that you talk to

echo_blades: Yeah, you start talking to, um and they're more interested in telling you about their life than anything else that's going on in the real world right in front of them, right? So had an older gentleman stop by, and I just happened to be, nothing going on in front of us, and um this guy's talking, and, oh yeah, doing this, doing that.
echo_blades: And starts telling about how he made knives and, you know, like when I um made knives back in this time and blah, blah, blah, blah. And just, you know, it was like a fucking 12 or 13 minute conversation.
echo_blades: And i was like getting ready to like interrupt them and like, you know, try to get them out of it.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: um But sure as shit at the fucking very last minute, the guy is just like, all right. When he says, oh hey, you say, what do you want for this? He's like, oh, you know, such and such dollars. And he's like, all right, cool. I'll take it.
echo_blades: And just it was good sale. And I could see from his buddy and and both of them that we're all like, whoa, didn't fucking see that coming. And after he made the sale and he turned around and walked and I was just like, i was like, dude, that was that was cool.
echo_blades: He's like, but yeah, he goes that I had zero idea. This guy like never in a million years would I thought this dude was just, you know, pull out an envelope and drive cash on the table and walk away with a knife. Uh, but the guy said, you know, he goes, you know, sometimes having a conversation with somebody pays off, you know?
echo_blades: And, for me anyways, I think that's something that'll stick with me for, for a long time. Um, You know, it's it's the sale, the you know, it's it you just you just don't know what what you know what potential customer is there.
echo_blades: And definitely judging people by how they look or whatever. But, um you know, part part of the deal is to have those conversations. And some of them are quick and some of them are apparently 13 minutes long.
echo_blades: But, you know, ah I thought it was super cool. I don't know if you've ever had an experience like that, but.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, mine usually end in you know, half hour, hour, and then the person walks away. But yeah, yeah but I know the feeling.

Denis Tyrell: I took the one off the, so when we went boating, since I got this jet skis back specifically for this event, uh, there wasn't that many of us. So I figured, um, I would only take the one out. Well, it took the one off, uh, which is not the one that was having problems, but it hasn't run for a while. So the battery was dead.
Denis Tyrell: Should have run it before everybody got there, but, um, had other issues because as, uh,
echo_blades: Ah, and then we get to the moral of the story.
Denis Tyrell: as i okay oop As I back the Jeep down to put them in I, so I make a point. I do not take my keys out of my Jeep because a long time ago i had someone drop my key into the Delta and get me stuck there. So I make it a point not to take my keys onto the dock just so they don't fall in the water.
Denis Tyrell: So I get out of the Jeep, I throw my keys on the seat, like I always do. And somehow the button on my key fob must've got pressed. Maybe I hit it against the seatbelt or whatever happened, it locks the door.
Denis Tyrell: I'm literally on the launch ramp. I go to get in the the Jeep to to move the jeep and all the doors are locked
echo_blades: I pull up to the marina and I'm sitting there for like 10 minutes and I'm like, where the hell is everybody? Cause I like, yeah we had a time to be there. i was very close to just a, just a tad early, but I was on time and I'm sitting around there and I'm like, this nobody's here.
Denis Tyrell: you.
echo_blades: i'm like, this is bullshit. I'm like, I know that Dennis is not going to be late, especially after busting my balls like he was. And I'm like, what the hell is going on? So I finally, I get out of the car and I start walking over to the dock and and then sure as shit, I see Toby Leland and Dennis down Jeep, back wheels in the water,
echo_blades: skis floating around there. And I just get this weird look. And yeah, he's sitting down there with his keys locked in the car.
Denis Tyrell: yeah so i had to i had to call my wife get her and she was actually in close to where we were because she almost followed us by out to do groceries at this place she likes to do groceries at which is a 20 minute drive from home so she had to drive back home get my keys come my extra set of keys come back and uh so i can unlock the jeep
echo_blades: it was It was a great moment.
Denis Tyrell: And I wish the story ended there because the, we pull out the, the, the jet ski that doesn't start and drop in the other one, the one that has just been worked on and it's having issues.
Denis Tyrell: It's sputtering and ah yeah, I don't know. And I didn't feel like dealing with it. We only had, how many were we? One, two, it was only six of us, right?
echo_blades: six, yeah. It was cool.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. there was only six of us on the boat, which isn't really enough to have someone on the jet ski. I mean, we could have, but it would have been a pain in the ass with the number eight. It's great to have the jet skis when there's like 10 people on the boat because then there's more people to trade off and stuff. but So anyway, we I ended up putting that one back on the trailer and that's why we all just went out of the boat.
Denis Tyrell: So I got to deal with that jet ski.

I might go out this week and just give it a, I might just have to give her some gas and get it going and see if I can whatever, knock the dust off it and whatever. if Hopefully it doesn't have to go back into the shop. We'll see for the umpteenth millionth time this year.

Denis Tyrell: That's when someone's looking at you sideways. you Is that another Canadianism, the hairy eyeball?
echo_blades: I guess. Yeah. i Yeah. They give you the fish eye or what?
echo_blades: That's funny. And I'll close with this.

echo_blades: I had the but the most, the funniest thing that happened. The whole blade show is we, we hung out with some awesome people. um Yeah, like, you know, hanging out with seeing our buddy Lawrence, you know, hanging out, Brent, though the whole thing, just a a great time.
echo_blades: um But we got to also hang out with the with the sausage man, um Jamie. And I don't know, I think it was Saturday afternoon um and I was shows about, you know half hour from closing and I was walking by to go do something and I see Jamie at the table and he is absolutely 100% knocked the fuck out sleeping straight up, knocked out.
