Speaker: what's happening everybody welcome to another triple t podcast for knife makers so my name is jared from echo blades and i do apologize for leaving you almost alone last week with uh dennis but uh i will say ah i also have dennis here with me my co-host my dear buddy thanks my dear buddy my my partner in in crime and ah Yeah, the major participant in our mission to avoid boredom.
Speaker: ah Yeah, I will say, though, before we get going here that um I haven't listened to many podcasts at all, like zero.
Speaker: Um, and I did check out, I got about halfway through cause it was like fucking 10 part series last week. Uh, I got about halfway through, Mike's, uh, and yours, um, and man, it was fantastic.
Speaker: I have, I was worried at first. I had a whole bunch of questions cause you don't know if people are going to be like a talker or whatever. he basically went through every one of my questions without me asking them. Dude, it was such a breath of fresh air to hear somebody that I know, number one, um but I didn't know the whole journey, right? like Because you you talk and you you hang out with people for a while, but like to hear the the beginning to the end, and I haven't even got to the end yet, but um you know and I'm not not throwing shade on any other other shows or anything, but there is a very, very... um
Speaker: ah typical cast of characters that we hear. adam And they're all awesome people, all awesome things, but you know, that nothing beats the very first time you hear, you know, Mameko's story.
Speaker: you know, uh, Mumeco. was like, who are you talking about? I was combining Mumeco, ah you know, that one dude. Mumeco. Mereco's story, Josh, pritt you know, like the, you know, the standard guests of, of awesome people that we know and, and have learned a lot about, but yeah, Mike was fantastic.
Speaker: Um, a lot of good insight, a lot of good, for me, it was a lot of, uh, um ah took a lot of comfort in knowing that Even the old timers still had the same apprehensions, the same fears, the same struggles, the same things, you know, and even 30 years, 20 years, five years, just starting now, you know, it's a very different, but very typical story of, you know, people trying something new out of the blue, no intentions, nobody, I i haven't met a knife maker that just like was born and was like, I'm going to make knives, you know? It's always something we fall into and and here we are and it's filled with a lot of insecurities and and doubt and then some small victories leading into bigger victories into you know some amazing, amazing talent. And I'm just grateful that
Speaker: for all of us that have kind of stuck with it and got through, but man, it was really good. I really enjoyed, and he didn't let you talk much. So that was pretty good. The only thing I was after it, I was like, damn it. I wanted to relay the story of the first time he reviewed your knife.
Speaker: I assumed that would have happened. No, I totally, at the end of it, I was like, damn it, I forgot to tell him that story, or like like give him our end of that story, which we always lament and think that's hilarious. Oh, it's the best, yeah.
Speaker: It's absolute best. But yeah, no, good job, man. That was that was really good. Yeah. We'll have money again sometime. Yeah. It was good to get the, I mean, i always like the to hear about the you know, the ABS and coming up at the ABS and what that was like. And it was the first person I've ever talked to who's been on the board. So that was kind of cool.
Speaker: That's about where I stopped. He was talking about like, he got tapped to join and he was kind of reluctant. And then he was like, what the hell is going on here? And, um, yeah, so I, that's, that's about where I went.
Speaker: Yeah. Where I stopped, but yeah, that's good. But other than that, man, how are you? I, uh, yeah, I was gone last week and, uh, I haven't really. It was good. I'm just, uh, I was working away. I'm working on that buoy that I'll talk about. And, uh, then had Jeff in the shop for Jeff from Bison Blade Works. Who's, um, I'm rocking his shirt today.
Speaker: Oh, yeah, I was i was wearing it yesterday. um he He's from Oklahoma. He's been for a class before. He wanted to come for a guard and handle class and a folder class.
Speaker: And um yeah, so he came for three and a half days and we got both those done. So it was really good. Yeah. It was good to see him.
Speaker: He's a good dude. Yeah. Genuine, genuine good dude. Yeah. Really good dude. Easy to talk to. you know, we hung out every night. Um, well, my wife is out of town too, so that made it even easier. Um, we had dinner every night. We hung out, we drank scotch. We, uh,
Speaker: you know, set hot, tub all that fun. I will say that there was a, uh, a moment when, uh, cause I went over and, um, had dinner one night on his, on his birthday night, actually. Um, and, uh, there was a couple of times I got a couple of whiffs of the, uh, the cup, the glasses and I had some, I had some good memories, good memories.
Speaker: Yeah. I'm not even a scotch drinker. And, um, I pulled, I forgot I had it I pulled it out of the cupboard and yeah, we finished up a few glasses of that. And, um, yeah, it was good.
Speaker: Oddly enough. I was like, uh, think I was 21, 22 and and i did a bunch of dumb shit, lot of ghetto shit and a lot of drugs.
Speaker: But in my mind, um I thought I was super classy because for one of my wedding gifts, I asked for a decanter set and I got a crystal, some tumblers, a decanter for my scotch.
Speaker: And every night I would come home from work and I would have ah scotch and water. And for like the first I don't know, month or five.
Speaker: i didn't even like it. I just thought I was cool. You pinkies up and it puts my eyes and, and I just, i used to like gut it. and And then, but I always laugh because I would, I'm probably the only guy that was drinking scotch and then ripping a bong and then, you know, grabbing a Corona and like doing all this stuff in one night, every night for my the beginning. But I thought I was so cool. Cause I was, i used to drink scotch out of a fucking crystal. Yeah.
Speaker: Tumblr. so it was It was a good memory what i when i I got a quick sniff of it. so Yeah, i'm trying to remember I'm trying to remember the scotch that it was. It was pretty good scotch, actually. I bought it for um an old workmate that was coming over, and it's been in the cupboard for years. but um I kind of liked it, and I never used to like scotch, but I think it's the age. it's It's growing on me.
Speaker: Yeah, i don't know. I started way young. i If I ever go back out, I'll i'll definitely yeah be drinking some scotch. And I guarantee you if I was drinking, that shit wouldn't be in your cupboard for that night. But yeah, no, that was a good time, man. We had a good talk. um Good dinner. Yeah, I really enjoyed our time with them.
Speaker: And I was actually kind of in a in a little... pissy uh mood too so it was really good to uh kind of get out of myself and um just go hang out and do that so it was good yeah right on time i should say so yeah so tell me about your trip dude uh all in all um a fantastic time uh for for many reasons uh more than anything i um I think just having that time with my son,
Speaker: um as an adult, cause I've taken my son and my kids on many trips. Um, I tried to do, in my whole, my whole parenting deal has just been trying to do things differently than, than I had. Right. So I've, I've taken them on a lot of things and overdone it and in in that capacity. Um, but I've, I've had this experience with my daughters cause they're grown up.
Speaker: Uh, but my son, you know, the youngest, um, was, it was such a great time to just hang out with him and not have the, are we there yet? Or, you know, like yeah like the the whole, like, you know, I'm really trying to accept that he's, you know, he is, he is a young man now. And, um,
Speaker: But yeah, we hung out. We had a lot of good talks. We golfed our asses off. um we went We left on Friday. um and we came home on Wednesday. So I think that's like six days. but for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Yeah, six days. We did seven rounds of golf.
Speaker: um We stayed at a really big... You know what I have to say? Yeah. Other than we golfed a lot at a great time. I'll talk about that a little more. But we went to Southern California and past L.A.
Speaker: to a town called Carlsbad, which I think it should be called Carls Good because the place was fucking awesome. It's like Monterey
Speaker: on like a laid back steroid, if that makes any sense. Well, you also got lucky because the weather is been crazy mild this year. So Carlsbad normally end of July is like super hot, right? No, it's on the beach. It's never hot.
Speaker: It's like 75 or 80. No, it's on on the beach. Oh, okay. Yeah. um It was actually kind of weird because it was, in talking him with my wife and and some people back home, um I guess it was kind of muggy up here too.
Speaker: So it was overcast and a little humid there, but it was still like 70, muggy and then on the last day we were there it was like 80 a little maybe yeah somewhere 80 85 but um still overcast in the morning but kind of sticky weird nothing like you know the the real humidity but we got golfed with somebody from louisiana and he's like oh yeah this is this is not you know this is a mild at least but um Yeah, he's not going back to Louisiana, he said, ever again. He's he's happy there being in Southern California. But man, it was a different a different vibe than L.A. So I guess you just got to keep going a little south and and it gets cool.
Speaker: Apparently, it's a pretty ritzy place, though. so So it's between San Diego and L.A.? Yeah. Okay. Yep. It's about 30 minutes, no traffic to to San Diego.
Speaker: Oh, okay. So it's, it's still pretty far down there. Yeah. I mean, it took us we drove, and think it's like an eight, eight or nine hour drive. Um, we, we made everything long though with our, our, our golfing trips and the, and the, and the stops that I had to make. But, um, yeah, it was great, dude. Just the, the time hanging out, the resort was really cool. Um, had this like infinity and infinity and infinity pool, hot tub overlooking the two courses that were there.
Speaker: Um, It was really small for a resort. I think like if my wife and I went, it would have been like perfect um to just do like adult nothing type things and chill. So for me, I would have been golfing and then just hanging out in the pool and doing nothing.
Speaker: But he got pretty bored really quick. So we had to. had to keep going. We, we golfed 36 holes one day. of and then, yeah, that was, that was a bit rough. I tell you what I am old though. And, um, about the fourth, fourth round into it, uh, I woke up one morning and, and, and my hips were hurting. I was like, this is new. I've never in my life have woke up and been like, Oh my God, my hips are, you know um,
Speaker: Yeah, it was, I needs a walker i had to get a, yeah, I had to take a lot of ibuprofen uh, you know, kind of, kind of man up on a couple of of those things. Cause I was like, yeah, um,
Speaker: but then we ended up playing, uh, some, some random, uh, like Muni course in Carlsbad. And it turned out to be the most amazing course. I don't, I don't think I even showed you pictures or I might've, uh, videos, but, um, I'm not a big fan of, of, of like courses in the mountains that ah have a lot of hills and undulations. Like you can't hit the ball on anything that's flat, but this thing had the the back nine of this course had, ah like four holes where you were teeing off from like 200 feet above where the fairway was.
Speaker: And it was a twilight round. So we were getting the sunset in the back. We actually finished the the round in the dark. But man, there was some amazing views, amazing views. And he actually got to golf that course for free because um the the place he works owns a bunch of golf properties. And because he's an employee, he got his round comped.
Speaker: So that was like a super plus for me. Did you know that going in? didn't. I knew that was a possibility, but I didn't know this course was that it was completely random. When I went to go book the tee time, they were like, Oh, this is a JC resort. And I was like, Oh dude, you, you gotta try to talk to these people. Um, and apparently gotta go some through some process where like the head pros got to call this head pro and like schedule it.
Speaker: Um, but he was able to prove to him that he was employee. So he got that free, but man, that course was awesome. The resort courses were cool. um The shittiest course we played was in Turlock, the country club in Turlock.
Speaker: it It's very fitting for for the town. I was going to say, there's nothing there's nothing memorable about Turlock. No. I lived there when I was a kid for a couple years too, but, uh, yeah, other than that, it was, uh, it was great. Uh, and then on the way back, um, we had planned to do, another course along the way, but we were both kind of just tired. So, uh, we ended up driving all the way home on Tuesday. but I did get to stop and check out, uh, one of our sponsors, uh,

Speaker: But ah what a great, yeah, in the same area. um I learned a ton, man. It just happened some conversation um different than than I've had with Kevin before. um But yeah, he gave us a tour of the of the place, um talked about some things he's got coming up and and all the all the all the jazz. He was super cool to Jared. um Jared was really digging. he goes So on the one of the trips on the way down there, we played in a course in a town called Ascadero, which is in the Central central Coast.
Speaker: And I stopped by and um saw Brent from Crosby and Forge. Oh, yeah. Yeah. So, um but I took him there and, you know, for him, it's just like,
Speaker: it's not his thing. Right. So going to see another person's garage, basically with the same shit that I have in mind, he's just like, you know, and on the way back home and I was like, no, I got to stop and see and and see. But I think i i said, I think you'll dig this because this isn't, this isn't a knife makers, like a machine, um you know, production making machines and some other stuff. And, um, Yeah, hes he really took a ah liking to the all the C&Cs and all the the machining stuff that was going on. So I thought that was pretty cool.
Speaker: um He was talking Kevin's ear off for a while. Really? Yeah. So it was cool. So may... I don't know. He's in that spot right now. We had a lot of conversations about what he wants to do. And I tried to make it as productive as I could with the time that I had with him, but not totally ruin it with like, you're going to do this for the rest of the year. You need a plan, son. Because I'm still his dad, but I wanted to more so just kind of celebrate his accomplishments and his birthday. So yeah, that was the focal point. So was kind of stoked that he- So does he have plan? Huh? Does he have plan?
Speaker: No, no. It changes from day to day. Yeah. But, you know, I told him he's got at least another month chill out.
Speaker: yeah Well, I mean, school starts in a month. So, I mean, my whole focus with him right now is to get him. I'm like, you don't have to know what you want to do, right? Because i would love to have, ah ah you know, to tell the story that my son's got a plan and he's going to college and he's, you know, doing all this. He's going to golf at this place for a Division I school and all, you know, all that things that some some parents get to do. But, you know, he's like me and my whole life.
Speaker: um what I'm suggesting more than anything is that you don't have to have a plan, but you need to use your time wisely right now because it goes by so fast. So if you're not, if you're undecided with what you want to do, then you should probably be doing some kind of school,
Speaker: um or getting into a trade or, you know, something along those lines to make this time beneficial. Moving forward. Yeah. Make make it, or have some kind of value at the end of it. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. But I do really want, because he's he's really motivated, so, um but I also want him to, to, kind of take a chill and and enjoy himself right now. Cause I'm like, you got your whole fucking life ahead of you to, to work buddy. So, um, that, that is, that, that's a fact. So, um, but yeah, that, all that was great. Um, I think the overall total, think he beat me every round straight up.
Speaker: Um, we were playing a little like skins game, um like a dollar a hole and then we have this other game where we play from from a buddy but uh i think i got him on the on the money part um like skins and holes and stuff and and we yeah i'll bore you guys with the with the specifics on the golf stuff but uh but he did uh um what me which is not not a not a surprise um we both played like shit a couple rounds and then we had some some good rounds
Speaker: Um, so it was cool. That's good. Yeah. It's good to have that time with your son. I know when Logan turned 18, we went to, we actually went to Vegas. Not like we were partying cause he was only 18, but we did a bunch of there's a bunch of touristy stuff to do around Vegas that doesn't involve drinking and partying.
Speaker: That was, uh, it was pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah. It was good. Felt like a vagabond, though. We were like, it felt like we were constantly on the move, even though we were at that hotel for, or the resort for a few days, but we stayed moving. Oh, and then we went to go see, I took him to I don't know do you know what Torrey Pines is?
Speaker: um So there's the golf course there. We went and checked that out. I almost had us around book there, but it just, it fell through at the the last minute, but fuck man, that's like Hawaii. They get you a if you're not a resident, it's like 300 something bucks to golf there.
Speaker: What defines resident? If you live in San Diego. Oh, you're a resident in San Diego. Yeah. Okay. Or maybe this sometimes it's California resident. That's what I'm asking. No, no, no, no, no. no no Yeah.
Speaker: This is, I think that's in Hawaii. I know there's a, there's like a tourist rate and and and a local rate, but yeah, it's like 70 bucks or 80 bucks. If you live there in 300, I mean, even the twilights were like 150 bucks.
Speaker: I was just like, oof. but Hey, do you, um, have you heard of the the TV show, the Hawk? Yeah, hold on. Speaker: I enjoyed it. I was actually the first episode that I watched. um I was pumped when it came out. I was like digging the trailers and stuff. And then I watched the first episode and I i was like, man, this is like a cheesy fucking happy Gilmore.
Speaker: It's like happy Gilmore meets um Ricky Bobby. Kinda. Kinda. And I kept thinking about Stick, too, because Stick is another golf show that was on Apple TV not too long ago that was fucking great.
Speaker: Is that the one with Owen Wilson? Yeah. And his brother's in this one. Yes. ah but Luke Wilson. um But yeah, I ended up just finishing it today, too. um And it was it was great. i really I ended up liking it.
Speaker: It's not clear if there's going to be a season two, but Like the way they ended it. Yeah. I'm assuming there will be though. Yeah. I hope. Anyways.
Speaker: It was cool. Yeah. I loved it. I figured you watched it. Yeah. That's good. Will Ferrell's a nut. He's hilarious. Yeah. he he He is. It it felt there there are times it did feel very Talladega Nights in a couple of the episodes. It was It had that flavor.
Speaker: For sure. that If you first, you last. Yeah, exactly.
Speaker: But fuck, yeah. after After all of that, I ended up golfing the tournament on Saturday and I played Sunday. So it's been, I think, nine days nine rounds suck over nine days. Um, and yeah, I think I'm a little burnt out. I'm ready to take a day or two off.
Speaker: You know, work days, right? Yeah. Probably won't play until the end of the week, but yeah, it was good. Awesome. Get in the shop and do some knife work. You lazy bastard. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. And then I just, I guess the weather's been nice and now it's back to fucking a hundred degrees tomorrow, which I plan to be in the shop though. So is it going to be a hundred tomorrow? here it is so it's probably 90 low 90s for you ah yeah now I gotta start my sci-fi challenge build next week which means forging so I'm hoping it drops down to high 70s low 80s yeah not happening am I don't I was just pissed off so yeah it's 100 here tomorrow 90 90 90 95 95 95 all the way
Speaker: next No, here it's going to be 81 on Thursday. 84 Friday. And then next Monday is 88. So 84 next Tuesday. So that's not too bad.
Speaker: i can I can make that work. So if you're in the 80s, I'm in the 90s. It's pretty shitty. Fucking, what are we, 15 miles apart? One mountain range and 15 miles and I get 10 degrees more? of and i was I was explaining that to Jeff because like we had perfect weather this weekend.
Speaker: like Friday, Saturday, it was like 82. eighty two It was beautiful, sunny. It was basically what I consider perfect weather. yeah And Jeff's like, yeah, man, you guys do have the the best weather. I'm like, yeah, we do.
Speaker: um and now it's going to get all hot and bullshit. Yeah. Oh, well. It's all good. But yeah, I'm working on that frame handle buoy, which I'm almost done. I'm very, very thrilled about how this one's turning out.
Speaker: That's the one I saw had all heat treated? Yes. um And I got all of the, all of the yeah made made crazy progress today because I got all the handles sculpted.
Speaker: It's like ivory. So the handle's all sculpted. It's fitted. Um, now I'm just, I'm doing final sanding on it. Oh, cool. Which is what he treated with. Uh, I, he treated it with my even heat kiln. Cause that's the only way to go.
Speaker: nice yeah. Uh, even family owned and operated since 1948, almost as old as me. Yes. Absolutely.

Speaker: But yeah, it was good. It was good. i Yeah. Anyways. No, i was saying I'm happy with that frame handle Bowie ah bowoie knife and how it's turning out. I think this might be one of my MS knives so far. I don't see any issues with it, so...
Speaker: We'll see, I'm going to give it to Mike or show it to Mike and next month when I see him at Rick's and have him give it the once over Rick as well to see if they see anything that I don't see.
Speaker: Yeah. nice um cool And I made, um ah of course, I made a folder along with Jeff when he was doing his folder, which turned out pretty cool. um action on it's beautiful but I decided and this is going to be my um uh triple t video this week or sorry this week which is going to be how to do laser etching like like fancy lazy fancy etching patterns like acanthus leaves and the stuff you usually see on knives like those kind of scroll patterns how to get those scroll patterns um and do those etchings uh for knives
Speaker: So cool, cool stuff. And just a really easy website that buddy Jim Clow turned me on to.

Speaker: I saw it. Yeah. So got that spent so a day setting that thing up. Um, there's, ah there's a lot of setup to that thing.
Speaker: imagine Cause it like, you know, it hooks up to water. It's got to hook up to sewer. It's got two different power things. Like there's a lot of, there's a lot of steps in the setup of that thing. So I didn't quite finish it cause it just came Tuesday. Um, and then,
Speaker: Jeff got there like 11 o'clock on Wednesday. So I got through some of it. But um how big is it? That's what I can't remember. Like how big of a piece can you put in there?
Speaker: Yeah. i would Well, I was telling Noah, like it's, it's the Wazer desktop, but, and you would think when I think of something that's desktop, even though they told me the sizes on the phone, when I was having the call with them, I'm thinking desktop, like, even though they told me the sizes, like it's just not registering. Right. And I'm thinking like, yeah, it's going to be like, what?
Speaker: twice the size of my printer or something like that. No, it's desktop, meaning it's the size of a fucking desk. Like, it's huge. It's probably three feet by two feet um by and it's like four feet high because it it has its own table. It has its own legs. So it takes up lot of space in the shop. I had to take out the sink, and I got a new sink coming, which is partly the reason why I haven't totally set it up yet because I got to do all the plumbing and all the shit for it. um
Speaker: So, yeah, it's it's a big machine, but the bed itself is 12 inches by 18 inches is how much how big the material can be. 12 by 18. Okay.
Speaker: Yeah. A foot by a foot and a half, um which is, yeah, it's a decent size. You know, this is still like hobbyist type water jet.
Speaker: um Not really for production use, but certainly you can do, you know, small batch cutting with it. um And I'm probably going to, oh I'll see how I'm going to do this. so I'm probably going to offer some small batch cutting services for my Patreon members.

Speaker: um like, you know, you've seen people do, like, like especially Mother of Pearl, they'll put Mother of Pearl inlays into knives. lot of folders are doing this. Well, you kind of either need a pantograph or you need...
Speaker: or going to spend a million hours getting those exactly perfect. But now with the water jet, I can just put a piece, and I actually just ordered some Mother Pearl and got it. I can just put a piece of Mother Pearl on the bed, secure it down and cut it exactly in the shape that I want.
Speaker: And then cut the the other piece of the handle at the same time. So, because it's all it's CNC, right? It's like a CNC water jet. So I'm interested in doing some of that as well.
Speaker: Nice. Yeah. And I actually was talking to Gabe Keeling um because he has, he actually reached out to me. He's a local folder maker here. Yeah.
Speaker: And he actually has a Wazer, the same one. Oh. And because he reached out to me he said, hey, I have the same one. And I said, oh, well, what are you using it for? And he's like, oh, well, i I cut out all my folders. I cut the lock bars.
Speaker: um which I was surprised about because I was thinking, well, maybe the kerf on the water jet is is about 40 thou. So your cuts minimum are 40 thou, which is a little bit wide for a lock bar, but I mean, it doesn't hurt it. But yeah, he cuts all his lock bars and he's got some more stylized knives where he actually does curved lock bars, which is really cool.

And you could hear the lift gate like, creaking and popping when he was he was lowering that thing on the lift gate so like you going up the stairs or what that's why they were sitting in the the end of the driveway like where you saw what are like 50 pound bags or yeah yeah that's funny yeah like it's too bad i missed that 40 of them uh yeah

Speaker: Yes. That's what I think it is. I think that's how you say it from bison blades. Anyways, uh, heating the quench oil. How critical is it to heat the oil to one 20 before quenching? I've just watched a reel from a knife maker named Eric Finch basically implied that, oh maybe i shouldn't have said that, but, uh, if you didn't, uh,
Speaker: do that, the blade wouldn't harden. Uh, essentially what he recommends or what he demonstrates, uh, is sorry, I can't read. My glasses are fucked up.
Speaker: He was saying he finds it hard to believe that from 80 degree room temperature to 120, a 40 degree change in quench oil makes a big difference. And then the second part of the question, well, let's, let's let's talk about the first part.
Speaker: Sure. So the I actually what went, he sent me the link and i actually went and looked at this post. And the problem is nowhere in this post does Eric Finch mention the quench oil that he's using, um which is the biggest problem. um Because if you're using canola oil, which number one is a terrible quenchant.
Speaker: Sure. Which I doubt he's using. Yeah. um But it turns out it's using parks 50, which you do not need. It has working range. I'm pretty sure from 70 to 120.
Speaker: So as long as it's written about it. Yeah. Yeah. As long as it's room temperature, it does not change. It doesn't matter. Um, So unless your oil is below, i wouldn't heat it unless it's below 70 degrees. Even 65, it'd probably be fine. But yeah.
Speaker: So the the first problem is he didn't mention the quench oil. On the... Canola oil, this is true for canola oil because it's very viscous and heating it to 120 makes it thinner, less viscous.
Speaker: And it actually cools the steel better. Seems counterintuitive, but it's true. um It's not necessary with Parks 50. It says right on the bottle when you buy it.
Speaker: with the working i was I don't have the data sheets in front of me, but I have done the, uh, I've, I've looked at that as well. Yeah. And it was just cool for us here because it, it rarely, it's never cold. So, I mean, if it's in the winter, I will heat up a piece of, i have a piece of rebar that I put in while I'm taking it up to to temperature. And then I'll, when I get close, I'll, I'll drop the rebar in there just to heat things up.
Speaker: Yep. And the second part of um Jeff's question was, can the quench oil be too hot if you're quenching multiple blades? This is the biggest problem. um So yeah, of course it can be too hot. um And if you only have a gallon of quench oil and you're quenching even one knife, it's probably too hot after one knife.
Speaker: Yeah, i was going to say the quantity definitely matters. yeah So you need, I have a two gallon quench tank and I can do maybe three small knives, maybe two chef size knives um before it's too hot.
Speaker: And, but I have a second quench tank that I use for swords that has extra oil in it. So I can go over there and use that if I need to. But yeah, you certainly need to let your quench oil cool down, which is why it's not a good idea to heat parks 50 to 120 because you will get one knife out of it and then you won't be able to use it again and you have to wait for it to cool down.
Speaker: yeah um So yeah, I don't think what what this guy is saying is is true. um Yeah, unless you're using um like canola.
Speaker: And the only thing you should quench in canola is like 5160 or maybe 01. um The only two steels that I can think of that quench well in canola.
Speaker: Yeah. so I mean, I guess it is. And I've had success with it at room temperature. Oh, yeah. we I mean, you have the HRC to to test it to to make sure we're not just saying it's good because it's skating a file or something like that. We're getting actual...
Speaker: actual numbers on the HRC tester to back that up. so I was when Jeff, because I answered this directly to him in the shop when he he said, but um I also told him that like, probably my least favorite, like statement from a knife maker is like, it skated a file, but it skated a file. I'm so sick of hearing that, that, you know, it's not real unless you use an HRC tester because files can be Really good files can be, you know, 67, 68, and really shitty files can be 55.
Speaker: So it's gated a file that doesn't really tell you that much.
Speaker: Yep.
Speaker: All right, let's do the first question, and we'll save the other one for next time. Okay.
Speaker: um This one's from Iron Gorilla Forge. It says, as a hobbyist maker with no intentions to ever go full time, just wanted to get some thoughts, advice on the maker's mark. Laser is out of the budget. Electro etch seems like a pain, plus not that cheap to start with. And then you have to have stencils. Thoughts on a hot stamp? I was thinking of going this route since, uh, or once it's done your set, um, I looked into it, but, um, he had some issues with, uh, trying to figure out how to get one ordered. Um, is asking for some advice on, um, on hot stamps or, um, other ideas, uh, to try to get economical with getting the maker's mark.
Speaker: Yeah. What's your view on this? Um, I,
Speaker: Built a electro etch machine for a hundred bucks ah based on a YouTube video that I saw from, um oh God, he's the guy for me.
Speaker: I can't. Redbeard? Redbeard. Redbeard. Yeah. And. It's not me. It's Redbeard, you bastard. Yeah. It is red. Oh, I mean, it's through red beard that I found my true love. Okay. Without red beard, this wouldn't be possible. so slighted No, you shouldn't.
Speaker: yeah it It was dude. He like, I've said this in our very first episode, man. He, that whole first video he put out about like making a knife with cheap tools was just like fucking wizardry to me. I was like, Oh my God, made it all possible.
Speaker: Um, And then, ah but yeah, i I did that through that YouTube video. It cost me at that time, i think no more than a hundred bucks. um It did bring me back to my old tweaker days of ah wiring. And so du it was so it was kind of a rough deal for me um because of, you know,
Speaker: all of the, uh, the things, but it was very simple. If my dumb ass could do it. Um, it was economical. And I think I got some stencils made for 60 bucks. I got like, you know, four, four or five, which lasted me until I, I probably could still have them i think I gave that to, uh, my buddy, uh, um,
Speaker: can't remember his name, I gave it to somebody. um And so I can't use those stencils anymore. But and when I got the laser that I don't have anymore. So that was good. I've never had a hot stamp. um I've been thinking about doing that for for foraging.
Speaker: But that's my... I think each one has its pros and cons. Obviously, of all of those, the laser is the best, but it's the most expensive.
Speaker: electro etch is soup it's actually really easy it's actually relatively cheap to start i mean yeah you can build one for 100 bucks you can also just buy um um a dc power don't even know if you could oh yeah i was never able to find one like yours like all of them no no i don't mean the battery charger i mean like what i use for electro plating You can buy those for 80 bucks. like a Like those those things are really cheap. It's just a DC, you know, a a um AC to DC converter.
Speaker: they're They're really inexpensive. And you don't need one that does a ton of amps. It only has to do a couple of amps. um And then get you can get your stencils from, I used to get mine from IMG ElectroMark.
Speaker: You just send them an image. And I'm pretty sure they were like 75 bucks shipped um for six of them or something like that. And they last forever. Or if you know someone that has a cricket, um those don't last very long and they're not real good, but they're okay in a pinch.
Speaker: But getting them from my MG ElectroMark is their professional stencils. So I would definitely recommend that. So you're looking at 150 bucks probably to to get going on...
Speaker: on electro etching. I have videos on electro etching. The hot stamp is an option, but I warn you if you're hobbyist and you're um new, the only downside to a hot stamp is you got to get really close to your dimensions um before you do the hot stamp.
Speaker: Yeah, gotta forge too. Yeah, well, yeah, and you have to be forging them um because if you, if you grind, if you forge thick and grind thin, you're gonna grind off your maker's mark.
Speaker: That's the problem with hot stamp. So you basically gotta be almost brute to forge knives in order for the hot stamp to work. And they're, I don't know how much hot, hot, hot stamps are probably 80, hundred bucks.
Speaker: So you're all, you're already in the electro etch realm. So I would recommend the electro etch. It's a little more versatile and, or find a friend. I mine from TUS tech.
Speaker: Your, your, what? Your stencil? Yeah. TUS technologies.
Speaker: In 2021. Wow. Hmm. But, yeah, it's an also a good question. But, yeah, not everyone can can't afford the laser. But, yeah.
