Denis Tyrell: Welcome, boys and girls, to another episode of the Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. I am your host, Dennis Terrell, with my co-host, Jared Sandemann of Echo Blades, and we are here to try to entertain you.

Denis Tyrell: We may succeed. We may fail. We'll see. Jared. Jared.

Denis Tyrell: He's staring at his phone.

echo_blades: Hi, Dennis. How you doing?

Denis Tyrell: I'm okay. I'm okay.

echo_blades: i was just, I was trying not to distract you too much.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, i covered I covered the screen so I didn't have to look at you, so it worked.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: I just got back from Denver like three hours ago, so yeah. i

echo_blades: That's a long ass flight. You were messaging me at like 12 that you were getting on the flight.

Denis Tyrell: yeah but by the time yeah and then then we were in sacramento we had to drive in sacramento and drop off kayla and then we had to go grocery shopping and by the time we got back it was like 5 30.

echo_blades: Gotcha. Gotcha. All

Denis Tyrell: so yeah three hours but uh yeah it was a good trip

echo_blades: right. Nice.

echo_blades: Dude, you had the most awesome sweater. Oh, hold on. Let me just let me just start this. We have some some pretty shitty things to talk about here, but let me just get this going on a good note. i would like to take this opportunity to say how proud of you From the bottom of my heart, I was so amazed to see you use that computer you carry around in your pocket.

echo_blades: Flip it out. Take a selfie in front of something and post it on the interwebs. Bro, I was beaming with pride.

echo_blades: I was like, holy shit. And then to top it off, you had the world's most beautiful sweatshirt on too as well.

Denis Tyrell: yeah

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, that's the only reason why you liked it. thought

echo_blades: That's the only reason why I stopped. I was like, oh, hey, look at it. Oh, oh hey. yeah it was a whole process. But no, seriously, dude.

Denis Tyrell: it was It was a journey.

echo_blades: I was like, ah holy shit. he he he took a He took a picture.

Denis Tyrell: I will admit that I stole the other three pictures from Kayla, and i ideal only the only picture I took was the selfie, but yeah.

echo_blades: A huge, huge, huge shout out for you, buddy. That was pretty cool.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: All right, I'm turning this.

Denis Tyrell: But it was cool.

echo_blades: Let's track for

Denis Tyrell: I went to Denver to visit the new grandkid who is, my God, the cutest kid ever. ah This kid, I don't know what's going on with the hair, but the hair is like, like, but like he had his...

echo_blades: can yeah I would love for everyone to understand what it means.

Denis Tyrell: like Like he had his finger, like i mean

echo_blades: but

Denis Tyrell: like like he like he stuck his finger in a light socket, like continuously, like his hair does not go down.

echo_blades: Oh.

Denis Tyrell: It's like up all the

echo_blades: so he's got a lot of hair and it's everywhere.

Denis Tyrell: A lot of hair and it looks like a, yeah, it's hilarious.

echo_blades: He's got long hair, don't care.

Denis Tyrell: ah But he's cute as a button, so it was cool to visit. um We went to the... Now I'm going to forget the name of it. this I was going to say Stewart stewart Hotel.

Denis Tyrell: I don't remember the name the hotel. It's the hotel that they filmed The Shining at. It starts with a Stuart something. Anyway, we went to that hotel. That's the picture that i posted and ah the hallway, you know, with the two scary little twin twin girls. And you've seen the movie, I'm assuming.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. So, yeah, it was cool. in the In the movie, it looks like it's in the middle of nowhere. It's totally not in the middle of nowhere. There's like a whole town right beside it, which they don't show you in the movie. but

echo_blades: Was there a town there when they filmed it?

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Or did they build around it since?

Denis Tyrell: I'm sure it's bigger now, but yeah.

echo_blades: Hmm.

Denis Tyrell: It was cool. We saw some elk. We saw some deer. We saw a shit ton of rabbits. There's all kinds of wildlife out there in Estes Park. So yeah, it was cool.

echo_blades: Awesome.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it was fun day. And then we went to the Denver Zoo and saw more animals and yeah, so it was good trip. How was, uh, um, it's not,

echo_blades: The Denver Zoo big?

echo_blades: Is it like SF Zoo or San Diego Zoo or is it just like Oakland Zoo?

Denis Tyrell: it's,

Denis Tyrell: yeah It's probably the size of maybe a little bit smaller than the San Diego Zoo. But it's it's it's a really nice zoo.

echo_blades: Oh, that's big.

Denis Tyrell: I mean, it's, yeah, it's got all, we we went at night, we did like this light show.

echo_blades: Hmm.

Denis Tyrell: So we only saw the animals for like an hour and a half. And then like everything is lit up in these big like scenes. And yeah, it was it was cool. This is more about that.

Denis Tyrell: But yeah, i wanted to i wanted to um go see our buddy Chris Lozacco of Elemental Forge. We were going to get together, but his wife had a ah girls night or something like that. So he was stuck ah at home with the kids and it was an hour and a half away and we were going to meet halfway and he couldn't get out of the house.

echo_blades: Gotcha.

Denis Tyrell: We will lie meet up on another time.

echo_blades: Cool. I'm glad you reached out.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, how was your weekend?

echo_blades: My weekend was good. My weekend was all right. I did.

echo_blades: I had a good week. As far as making goes, I got out in the shop twice and then I spent, I think, some time in both days on the weekend.

echo_blades: But one night. I got out and i ground that Sanmai. us a stainless ani that we did.

Denis Tyrell: Oh, yeah. How'd that go?

echo_blades: Yeah. It was rough.

Denis Tyrell: What?

echo_blades: It was a rough,

Denis Tyrell: You mean like the he had to knock the rust off kind of?

echo_blades: just i mean a lot of rust like i started off really good and then switched hands and or switched you know switch sides um but yeah it it's definitely a don't do it you lose it gonna kind of deal no it takes a minute but um but and then i got to again you know using the uh

Denis Tyrell: it's not It's not like riding a bike.

echo_blades: The AmeriBarade just kicked ass, dude. i was You know what I'm really trying to to dial. Oh, here we go. Good transition into the the the video that Jeff Carey put out.

echo_blades: Absolutely just banger. That thing had me laughing. I'll tell you what.

Denis Tyrell: Why am I so fat in the video though? Come on, man.

echo_blades: It's just appropriate. It's just appropriate, Dennis. Yeah. You got it. I mean, how's that 7 a.m. retirement gym program going?

echo_blades: You are a little tanky, though. That was somebody asked me that, too. That doesn't know you. But anyways, um yeah, that was hilarious. And then what I was what I was.

echo_blades: what I've been trying to put together is, is the process to have the three.

Denis Tyrell: What you come up with?

echo_blades: And, um, I haven't, they're all really close together and I'm stumbling over my self and running out of room and blocking myself from things that, yeah my belts are in the back behind the other two grinders and now the, the other one's there.

Denis Tyrell: you would you come up with

echo_blades: So I got this like, It's good thing I did lose a little bit of weight because seven, eight months ago, there'd been no way in hell I was going to squeeze through to get back there. um But yeah, so I think I got to i gotta to do a pretty decent reorganizing of of those tools there.

Denis Tyrell: So I saw you're going to have vertical horizontal small wheel.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Like well what's the process going?

echo_blades: Exactly it. That's it.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: That's what I'm doing. So then I was... When I was grinding, the the the reason why I did end up grinding the sand in my billet was because the air went out in my shop again.

echo_blades: I had a, another leak and, um, the last time it happened, Jeff and I, we used all of the, the right size fittings to make the last repair.

echo_blades: So I was kind of shit out of luck. That's why I i called you and was like, Hey man, um i may need to break into your your shop this weekend to use the, ah um, to use your stuff for a minute. But, um,

echo_blades: So that was the reason why I did it because the grinder that I want to use the small wheel on was down because I have the the pneumatic tensioning for the grinder that Jeff and I did.

echo_blades: And yeah, so if you don't have air, it doesn't work. It's the only downside.

Denis Tyrell: Mm-hmm.

echo_blades: So, but anyways, that's why I ended up grinding because I've been

echo_blades: making sure I get in there into the shop to do something.

Denis Tyrell: But you fix the air.

echo_blades: So, yeah, but we ended up fixing the air this weekend. So, um, I totally lost what I was saying. Um, yeah, that's why I started and it doing it. And then, um ended up getting that all set up. So yeah, it's going to be small wheel vertical and, and horizontal.

echo_blades: And i just got to rearrange some stuff. So that's going to be cool. Once that happens. Um, the really cool thing was, um, I had, uh, Jared did out some knives the week before, but the handles to get the choil and all that stuff kind of dialed in, uh, needed the small wheel and, um,

echo_blades: But Brent had printed me out some profiles of my knives and then with 3D printed them.

Denis Tyrell: Mm-hmm.

echo_blades: And he did the handles for them. And man, that I didn't realize what a freaking awesome thing that is. Because when you when you have a template, I always end up like when I start to profile or Jared things out, the they are they're always like scaled up.

echo_blades: I, they just keep getting like bigger and bigger and bigger, you know, just in scale. I mean, it's not like, you know, huge, but um so it was really cool.

Denis Tyrell: See, big knives are better. Just want big knives are better.

echo_blades: Huh? Well, I'm talking like just proportionately, like everything is is taller and you know so anyways, I took the the handles ah the printed handle and was able to go back to it and kind of true everything up and get it back down, dialed in and I'm a template kind of guy. Free, free hand, you know, where they say free flow or whatever. I tend to overkill everything. So was really good to have the template to go back to. I found it really useful.

echo_blades: So um if you have the ability, I suggest you try that or go find a friend that will do it for you because I

Denis Tyrell: ah Yeah, i'm I'm with you. I have, yeah as you you know, i have templates of all my knives, not all of them, but a good portion of them. And the handles that I use all the time, I have just little metal templates of those handles. And sometimes I pick and choose different handles for different knives.

echo_blades: huge huge huge, huge, huge, huge tool.

Denis Tyrell: So.

echo_blades: Um, and I just, I've always done it on paper. So, um, they don't stick very, you know, just the whole thing with, you know, doing paper.

Denis Tyrell: You can't draw around it. It's nice to be able to take a pen and draw around or or like a marker on steel and draw around it.

echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, yeah, for sure.

echo_blades: Yeah. So that was really cool. I really, I really found that cool. So I got four knives all ready for, for heat treat. Probably do that tomorrow. Um, that the stainless is it's pretty much ground. I'll probably end up doing my normal thing and start hand sanding it and hate it and go back to the grinder a few more times. But

Denis Tyrell: What are you going to heat treat those on?

echo_blades: dude, I don't know if you've heard, but even heat kiln makes the most awesome heat treating ovens around in

Denis Tyrell: According to Jeff, I have five of them.

echo_blades: Yeah. Well, yeah. You remember those, you remember those days when we used to sit around that toaster oven and just, that was really cool. But yeah.

echo_blades: Even heat kilns, a family owned and operated company since 1948, building the highest quality heat treatment, heat treatment, heat treating ovens around. So go get yourself one, two, three, four. And one day you'll be in an AI video and somebody will say you got five.

echo_blades: And you still won't have enough. So, uh, yeah, but, um, uh, I needed the, uh, planned on doing that this weekend too, but I needed the air. Um, cause my quench plates are got the, uh, the air cool hooked up to the compressor to blow the air on them So, um, everything's up and running now.

echo_blades: So I'm ready to rock and roll on the, on

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, you're going to have some knives for a blade this year? You're bringing some knives?

echo_blades: Dude, I have it. I just, I just had this thought on my way into work is that my intent is to make a couple of knives for, um, some buddies of mine, uh, that I'm going fishing with in a couple of weeks.

echo_blades: And then I was like, just, just say, yeah,

Denis Tyrell: A couple weeks this year?

echo_blades: I, ben I, I'm in the shop. So, uh,

echo_blades: Problem is, if I make those, that trip is at the end of the month, is in two weeks like that, then that's going to leave me like a month to to get a Blade Show inventory too.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. yeah

echo_blades: So, you know, although I feel motivated and locked in right now, you it's a lot of time to, yeah, I'm a little nervous.

Denis Tyrell: to get unmotivvated

echo_blades: Just say that. Yeah, I'm a little nervous that something's going to pop up. So, yeah. but may have to audible on that.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, well, I think you should at least, here's my opinion. I think that stainless Sanmai and the um stainless Damascus, those those two I think you should finish for bloodshill.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Everything else you can, whatever, muddle around with, but I really think you should get those ones finished.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Because those will be some nice ones.

echo_blades: Yeah. You didn't, Yeah. know. I dipped the, uh, the stainless and, uh, I guess I gotta try the the Gator Max.

Denis Tyrell: For

echo_blades: The stainless and my.

Denis Tyrell: for stainless Sanmai, that one gets it a very, very short dip.

echo_blades: Yeah. How do you, how do you etch it?

Denis Tyrell: um That one, you...

echo_blades: Cause I, I dipped it super quick and I didn't get much transition or

Denis Tyrell: you

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, you you need about 60 seconds, but not more, because you'll start to pit the 416. So it's not like...

Denis Tyrell: so it's not like um you know, like an eight minute or anything like that. It's, it's not like that.

echo_blades: Yeah, I've never done one, so.

Denis Tyrell: I've never done the stainless Sanmai with um just Gator Piss. I've always used like a Ferric combo.

echo_blades: Okay.

Denis Tyrell: So I'm curious if, um if Gator Piss would, would be better for a stainless Sanmai.

echo_blades: Yeah. Anybody ever, uh, yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Etched a, uh, stainless San. My hit me up. Let me know your process. I'm curious about that.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Don't trust Dennis after the VFD. Okay.

Denis Tyrell: I gotta tell you, after, like, I think it kicked in, like, well, I could not sleep in the hotel because the the bed was, like, sleeping on a rock. So I did not sleep very well. So I'm lying in bed thinking about, holy shit, it's April, whatever it was, 4th or 5th, whatever the date was.

Denis Tyrell: and i'm already stressing about okay i need i want to make this many knives it's already april i have exactly two months and so i was stressing about how much time i have left before blade show um so it's uh the the pressure is already kicking in yeah

echo_blades: Yeah, I started to feel it this morning too. Because I don't want to show up.

Denis Tyrell: i i got a good start on the damascus last week so uh

echo_blades: Okay.

Denis Tyrell: i mean I'm making a lot of the stuff I want to bring that I haven't already made is going to be all of the Kumai stuff. So i'm i'm trying to make I'm trying to make eight folders that are all Kumai folders.

Denis Tyrell: um So I made, i think it's some pretty cool Kumai. It'll be a ball bearing, which I haven't done in ages, ball bearing canister core.

Denis Tyrell: a ball bearing core, gradient, okay, ball bearing core, copper, four layers of gradient stack above that, and then a black outside.

Denis Tyrell: and And then probably laddered, just to give it some more. I think it's going to look really cool. I'll let you know in the next couple of days um ifff it how it turns out.

Denis Tyrell: So I'm excited about that one.

echo_blades: I,

Denis Tyrell: and It's going to be a big bar, and I'll be able to get probably eight folder blades out of it.

echo_blades: yeah, i had to have a, a come to Jesus talk with myself. Um, cause I was, uh, actually kind of bummed that, uh,

echo_blades: it's not that I forged to mask it's with you every time you do. Right. But it's, we used to do it a lot. And, uh, you were explaining it to me and tell me that you're forging.

echo_blades: And I was just, i had a little bit of jealous envy going on. Like I wanted to get out there and do it. And then i think I told you that. And I was like, well, you know, I probably have like four or five, six, seven bars of shit that we've done.

echo_blades: I got to get through.

Denis Tyrell: That's when we pulled out the this the stainless mask because I'm you got to use this.

echo_blades: Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So I'm good. going to stick with the, uh, for now anyways. Uh, but yeah, it's, it's such a good time to do.

echo_blades: I always enjoy it, but yeah, so I was kind of, I was kind of a little bummed that I missed that one.

Denis Tyrell: I did have a really fun time last week working on what I'm calling the shark tooth. That little...

echo_blades: Shark tooth. oha Oh, shark bait. Damn it.

Denis Tyrell: That shark bait.

echo_blades: That's what you should call it.

Denis Tyrell: The little key ring knife, the little key ring auto that I made. that um Mainly it was to to figure out the button auto mechanism, which I was really happy to have figured out and understand what I did wrong.

Denis Tyrell: But that thing actually ended up really cool. I still have to like do the final finish on it. But it definitely has that that fidget factor to it. Like it's really snappy and you hit the button and it flies. i actually had to change the spring because I used a stronger spring the very first time and I hit the button and the damn thing flew out of my hand. The spring was so strong.

echo_blades: Oh, wow. How long is the blade?

Denis Tyrell: Oh, it's like um like the cutting edge is maybe an inch.

echo_blades: That's it?

Denis Tyrell: Oh, yeah. It's really tiny. The whole thing closed is less than two inches.

Denis Tyrell: so uh it's i know yeah under two inches is is legal

echo_blades: What's California legal? That's a California legal auto. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: is legal And I just wanted it to be something cool you could put on a keychain. um It's framed, like there's there's no liners, it's frames that I could make either out of Damascus. I could make the frames out of Damascus. I could make them out titanium. These were titanium.

Denis Tyrell: And then it's a tiny, I made it with a tiny little piece of Twist Damascus that I just happened to have in the drawer. um So it'll just be a cool little thing to use on you know, some little off cuts of Damascus.

Denis Tyrell: So, yeah, it was it's fun, and I'll see how how it turns out.

echo_blades: I thought the thing was really cool.

Denis Tyrell: and It was a good learning experience, but um maybe a couple of those folders that I make for Blade Show will be autos. I don't know yet. Depends how. I want to get the the ones that I need to get done done first, and then if I have some time to too were play around, I'll try to make an auto after.

echo_blades: I think that thing was pretty cool. I haven't had a chance to mess around with it, but it did look cool.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Well, if you come over to this where we get together this weekend.

echo_blades: Nice.

Denis Tyrell: Oh, no, wait. Are you around this weekend?

echo_blades: I am around. I got a Saturday.

Denis Tyrell: All right.

echo_blades: I'm not, but Sunday.

Denis Tyrell: Well, we should get together. We haven't done that in a while.

echo_blades: Yeah. Agreed.

Denis Tyrell: But um I have a class tomorrow, guard and handle class, a one-day class. But after that, yeah, I'll be making Damascus and finishing that little shark tooth and starting on some folders.

echo_blades: That's cool. You remember last week when I was telling you that um Jeff Carey was going to send us the, ah the yeah, the files.

Denis Tyrell: The files, yeah.

echo_blades: So I gave him my email address.

echo_blades: And he's like, he's like, you you should have And I'm like, no, I don't have anything.

Denis Tyrell: I already know what going to say.

echo_blades: And ah so we went back and did it again. And so this happened like three or four times. And I'm like, bro, what is wrong with this guy? Like, gave him the email. Like, all you got to do is just, you know, put the email in.

echo_blades: And then he finally texted me or messaged me back and says,

echo_blades: here's the email address. Bro, echo blades dot C at Gmail auto corrected to enchiladas.

Denis Tyrell: there's mean There's some really smart AI right there.

echo_blades: racist. I cannot believe this shit. I was in tears laughing when was like, oh my God. And then I did it again and it as sure as shit, it autocorrected to enchiladas at gmail.com. So enchiladas at gmail.com got our fucking files.

Denis Tyrell: Well, I'm sure that's actually somebody's email. So somebody got some files.

echo_blades: Yeah. And they're like, what is this? is Look at that sharp looking Latino kid.

Denis Tyrell: That little Latino boy, I recognize him. yeah

echo_blades: Oh,

echo_blades: it'd be hilarious if it was the freaking dude from Sutro Street. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: was just going to say, he

Denis Tyrell: it's probably that guy.

echo_blades: Oh, that's hilarious. Yeah, I was dying, though. I couldn't believe that that happened. Yeah. yeah

Denis Tyrell: man so you got the ameribrate all set up you were actually grinding on it and

echo_blades: I got them. Grind. I made a shit ton of metal. My, my shop is a disaster. What I didn't do. I, I, I, after last week's, uh, awareness of, you know, PPE and stuff, um, I, went I went and put the Versaflow on. Only thing I didn't do was, um,

echo_blades: ah because everything's moving around so much. um and And the way I have my, my slosh bucket set up on, on the other ones is it's not like yours hooked onto the, to the things.

Denis Tyrell: Why

echo_blades: um So I had it sitting there and it was missing and dude, there, there was just metal shavings fricking everywhere. Like, and that went, I didn't realize how fucking it was until I forgot to turn the light off above my grinders.

echo_blades: And I walked out there in my socks and, And I was like, Oh Lord. to i was freak it It was an interesting situation.

Denis Tyrell: it's up?

echo_blades: They were just, uh, cause I was doing a lot of drilling for, um, for holes in the handles and stuff. So I had aluminum or ABL shaving drill shavings all on the floor, all the dust and stuff.

echo_blades: And I was just like, Oh my God, there's, if I walk in the, had to throw the socks away. Like if, if I walk back in the house with this, Lynn's going to kill me. Uh,

Denis Tyrell: All right, so Ameribraid for the win. That's what I'm trying to get at here.

echo_blades: yeah, look,

Denis Tyrell: um If you guys need an awesome grinder to make a whole bunch of mess in your shop really fast, go to Ameribraid.com and use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off accessories and TTT for discounts on machines.

echo_blades: yeah

Denis Tyrell: Go get yourself a Fastback 2x72 and pick up all those amazing attachments. And then get three grinders and you can put them all on different grinders.

echo_blades: Absolutely.

Denis Tyrell: Or, yeah, that's right.

echo_blades: And you can ruin your socks.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, they should ship socks with the grinders.

echo_blades: so The sock shredder. Yep.

Denis Tyrell: Or check out the HyperDisk. It's a buffer. It's a disk grinder. It's got all kinds of cool attachments that change out in seconds. So give it a shot.

echo_blades: yeahp I used it all. I used it all.

Denis Tyrell: Nice.

echo_blades: Team Ameribraid.

Denis Tyrell: Nice. I have not had a chance to use my new two bastards cross peen hammer or the double diagonal.

echo_blades: That's not what it's called.

Denis Tyrell: The double ender.

echo_blades: yeah ah It's a double. Use your imagination.

Denis Tyrell: Double, double. I have not had a chance, but I probably will do some forging, some hand forging next week because I'm going to be making a hunter or a buoy.

echo_blades: and

Denis Tyrell: I haven't decided yet, but that will require some hand forging. So I'll definitely be picking up my two bastards hammers and swinging them around and, you know, giving them some love, showing the steel who's boss.

Denis Tyrell: ah So if you guys need a hammer, go check out Two Bastards Texas Smithian Supplies and tell them the boys at Triple t said go get one.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Why, Jared?

echo_blades: Because it's just absolutely grand to have a double fat peen in your hand.

Denis Tyrell: Jared, ski poling with the fat beans. Yeah.

echo_blades: Ski-polling. yeah Nice.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. ah Actually, since i'm I'm reading ads here, I was listening to Mr. Coy Baker on Hustle and Grind, and he did a good job. He was pretty entertaining this week.

Denis Tyrell: So if you guys need some premium steel, go check out Baker Forge and Tool. to get all the most amazing steel, a copper, stainless, you name it, they got it all.

Denis Tyrell: ah You use the discount code TTT10 there, and while you're there, get some gator piss to etch that stuff, some grime reaper to clean it, and some gator skin to keep it all nice and beautiful.

Denis Tyrell: So go check them out, and again, tell them we sent you. Screw those hustle and grind guys. Tell them we sent you.

Denis Tyrell: Just kidding, Oh, a what?

echo_blades: whoa

Denis Tyrell: Jared?

echo_blades: I hit the wrong button and the audio is full mega blast on Instagram. I was going to go check the ah dropout and I just got the shit scared out of me.

echo_blades: I couldn't stop it.

echo_blades: That was panic mode. oh I, ah yeah. I wonder if that comes through. it was like, oh, oh man, i was losing it.

Denis Tyrell: We didn't hear anything. it was just Jared with a goofy look on his face.

echo_blades: Oh yeah. That's good stuff.

Denis Tyrell: You know what um what I was playing with actually a

echo_blades: that This is a family show. Okay. it is a family show

Denis Tyrell: um Remember last last week I told you I was going to get my helper CJ to help me with some of the folders. And um I actually sent my the DXF files for the liners for those folders over to send, cut, send. And got them to um to cut them, which turned out to be a little complex because I wanted them to cut the lock bar.

Denis Tyrell: um it turns out you got to do a whole other process and bring them into another app and use a no curve cut but but um i did figure it out and i should be getting the first versions of those so i'm pretty excited that i won't have to uh do all that crap because all of the holes will be pre-drilled and i'll just have to do a final drill or ream on on those holes so that should make my folders go way quicker so i'm very excited about that We've got to get around to finishing yours too, by the way.

echo_blades: Agreed.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. You know, maybe that's what we should do this weekend is work on your phone.

echo_blades: Agreed.

Denis Tyrell: No, no, no.

echo_blades: No, got get where some, some things not for me to do.

Denis Tyrell: Oh.

echo_blades: That priority. That's all.

Denis Tyrell: Yes. All right. Get them done.

echo_blades: That's the only reason. Otherwise I'd be yes. Right up in there. What the hell was I going to say?

Denis Tyrell: I don't know.

echo_blades: I'm super sidetracked. My son just, my son just, yeah know my son just texted me ah i

Denis Tyrell: Deep thoughts with Jared. and

echo_blades: a marketplace for a car. So he's, yeah, he's now ah employed and um understanding that gas is expensive.

Denis Tyrell: Uh-oh.

echo_blades: So I explained to him the concept of of a beater, which he didn't understand.

Denis Tyrell: Mm-hmm.

echo_blades: And I was you have a truck. said, yeah, but i can't I can't afford to drive it I said, ha ha. Ha

Denis Tyrell: welcome to being an adult

echo_blades: ha. Ha ha. I didn't realize it was going to be that easy to not have to give him my truck.

Denis Tyrell: So you're going to help them?

echo_blades: But yeah. yeah Of course I'll help him. We have this cool thing to we're at the ah We were golfing this weekend and we walked in and he works at the place and you he needed a glove.

echo_blades: And he walks up and he takes the glove to the lady and she's like, you want to put it with your dad? and they i looked at it And I looked at both of them because like it's his boss and him. And they're looking at me and I'm like, i said't don't you have a job? And then there was like silence in the freak in the in the shop and i was just like,

echo_blades: I said, you're still my son, dude. i I'll get your club. there Oh, you're a good dad. I'm like, no, I just see the dad. I buy him a glove or I got to fill his gas tank up.

Denis Tyrell: think

echo_blades: This is way cheaper.

Denis Tyrell: I think him and his boss have wrapped around their fingers.

echo_blades: i He does. He does. He's a good kid. He's a really good kid. So I don't, I don't mind helping. Uh, um what it Dude, it's the Masters week.

echo_blades: So going to get the golf stuff out of the way. This is the greatest week in golf. Absolutely. That's disrespectful. That's like your Stanley cup or whatever you hold dear and true to your heart. This is the, this is the best weekend in golf. I am fired up. Um, and, uh, yeah, I golf twice this weekend, still got shop time in golf. Uh, it didn't shop pretty well. So what I did for the first time was, uh, because Jared's working now.

echo_blades: So my golf partners, uh, time is limited. He, uh, we've played with a couple of people there and we'll play some like side games and know, for very little money, but guy normally play with, um, we did, uh, another, did a couple of games, skins game and a couple other things. And this was the first time I've ever lost money or gambled on a, on a golf other than like a tournament.

echo_blades: And, uh,

Denis Tyrell: Okay. First time you've ever gambled or the first time you've ever lost money?

echo_blades: It's both. The first time I did, I ended up losing.

Denis Tyrell: oh

echo_blades: I mean, it was like seven bucks, but like, um, we all had to pay this guy seven bucks. so I was like, you know, it wasn't a huge stakes, but man, it, it, it really makes the, the the game a little more, ah interesting.

echo_blades: I'm like, and now there's a little, so little something on it, um, to do it. But I think I'm hooked now. That's, that's a problem. Cause I don't like gambling in any form at all, but

Denis Tyrell: You don't like gambling?

echo_blades: no Dude, every time every time i go to like Reno or Vegas, or which I haven't been to Vegas, but anytime I go to a casino, all I see is, and I'll, mean, it it ranges, but I just, i feel I feel like that is a lot of tacos I could buy with this money.

echo_blades: And I just can't, I can't equate just throwing tacos out the out the window, dude.

Denis Tyrell: Oh, you should not come to our poker game then.

echo_blades: Because I never win.

echo_blades: Yeah, I, it's not my thing. ah there's a I'll play some slots here and there. I did have some, it's problem is, is yeah I'm an addict, right? So like, I don't need another thing to, to throw into that. And I know that, um, if I get too, too into it, it'll be one of those things. Not that I'm not going bet my house and lose everything, but just, it's just one of those things, a slippery slope. So I try to stay away from it.

echo_blades: Um,

Denis Tyrell: I get it.

echo_blades: Yeah. But yeah, that, that was, uh, it was cool. It was good. I had a good time. We've got a tournament this weekend, um, on Saturday and then that's it, but it's master's time and we're ready to go.

echo_blades: I'll be, uh, fired up for that. Um, I don't know why the masters makes me think of, uh, grip tech, but maybe cause like, like the master grip, but,

Denis Tyrell: Matt that is the master.

echo_blades: He's the master of grip.

Denis Tyrell: that was a stretch, but...

echo_blades: Oh yeah. He stretches it. with

echo_blades: Okay. Uh, yeah. Grip de composites, uh, grip tech official on Instagram, grip tech.com, uh, maker grip X, um, grip X 3d, uh, limitless.

echo_blades: Um, I still need the, uh, the He's got to get the the weekly colors back in line. He's had a couple of runs, weeks of shows. So hopefully next week we'll get that together. But if you need some awesome handle material, go check out Grip Tech Composites. Use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off.

Denis Tyrell: Do it.

echo_blades: And to finish that stuff up, I recommend using Pelican oil. So go check out our buddy ah Travis Haynes at PelicanPaste.com. Maker of the hard wax, soft wax, Pelican oil, hand-solve soap, and the cast iron seasoning butter knot.

echo_blades: Yeah, all good stuff. And the Pelican oil really yeah spices up that Grip X. Really awesome. So go do that. Triple T, 10 for both of those. Load the card up and tell them the boys at Triple T's, what's up?

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, well, well let's let's just finish off all of the the the ad reads here. So we have two more. I will talk about the drop point because it reminds me that I need to put in an order from Skiff Workshop to get some more bearings and a bunch of folder parts.

echo_blades: o

Denis Tyrell: um So that reminded me of the drop point, which i had a bunch of knives go up in the drop point, which was awesome. I sold one of my folders, which was even more awesome when I've been i had for a little while. So I was happy to the the stainless damascus one um just sold so good to have that one off to its new home so it's just proof that the draw point works so if you guys need to sell some knives you want to get your knives in front of customers go use the drop point it is free it is great for targeting

Denis Tyrell: Consumers, not just knife makers. I know we all want to impress our friends with our knives, but they're not the ones that make them. i mean, sorry, they're not the ones that buy them. You make them, they don't buy them.

Denis Tyrell: Go after the guys that buy them. So go after some consumers on the drop point.

echo_blades: Why do I want to say consumer? I feel like it's customers.

Denis Tyrell: Consumers, customers, whatever.

echo_blades: I just, yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Same thing.

echo_blades: It's just a knife. You a knife consumer?

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Okay. Then preach on, sir.

Denis Tyrell: And then lastly, our buddy Lawrence Lake over at Maritime Knife Supply, who's got all of the things that you need, whether it's steel, folder parts, which I'm going to have to make an order over there, um abrasives, tooling, you name it, Maritime Knife Supply's got you covered.

Denis Tyrell: So even though it's up in Canada, the shipping will be quick and he'll get it out to you. So go check out Maritime Knife Supply. And again, yeah, even faster.

echo_blades: And if you're in Canada, it's even faster, even faster.

Denis Tyrell: So go check them out. Tell Lawrence the boys of Triple T said hi.

Denis Tyrell: All right.

echo_blades: We got from maker spotlight.

Denis Tyrell: So Maker Spotlight, this is one that um i yeah threw in a while ago. And again, it's just one of these um folder guys that that really just piques my interest.

echo_blades: I'm going get my ears going on, but I'm prepared for it.

Denis Tyrell: And this is Hovin Customs, H-O-V-I-N Customs. And that's Glenn i'm I'm not even going to try to... I'm going butcher his name. He's from Norway. He's Norwegian. So, Glenn R. Hoven Hermansen.

echo_blades: Hermanson.

Denis Tyrell: Hermansen. Sure. He's got 21,500 followers. So, go check him out. Just some beautiful, really, really cool folders.

Denis Tyrell: I'm seeing a lot of Stainless Damascus. I'm guessing a lot of these are from...

echo_blades: Wow.

Denis Tyrell: um damasteel yeah good to look like a lot of damasteel patterns but just just some really cool cool looking folders like some of the ones he's got some um tamascus

echo_blades: Damn, I'm still...

Denis Tyrell: Just some really cool designs. So that really caught my eye. So wow yeah, go check him out and look at some of the folders he's got. Just some really cool ones.

Denis Tyrell: I really like that one that's like one, two, three, four, the fifth row. it's um It's got like a really, yeah, Tomascus handle.

echo_blades: With the Tamascus handle? Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: It's got a really pronounced kind of false edge and main bevel.

echo_blades: That's really cool.

Denis Tyrell: That one's bitchin'. Big knife, but I like it. I like it a lot.

echo_blades: Fondi, Montau, and veneer handle. Yeah, that thing is very cool.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. So yeah, go check him out. Handmade in Norway.

echo_blades: Cool.

Denis Tyrell: Who do you got?

echo_blades: um I have someone that I, we were by them at, were in Texas. And i remember seeing this table and checking his stuff out at, in Atlanta last year, but I got Corey Dunlop.

echo_blades: That's Corey Dunlop underscore. on Instagram. He's got, uh, 3,019 followers. Um, think he's out of Arizona.

echo_blades: Yeah. Uh, really cool dude. Um, does really awesome work. Uh, the table, um, is the, the presentation on the table is really cool. He's got everything that kind of like what you, you, we've been talking about is kind of getting everything elevated and up vertical on stands and stuff. Um, but, um, I think he was,

echo_blades: in the culinary world for a little bit, um, as well, if I'm not mistaken, but, um, just really cool, clean stuff. Um, and I just wanted to give him a shout out and, in case you're under a rock and weren't following him already to go, uh, give him a, give him a follow and tell him the boys. So what's up?

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, he's got that a couple rows down.

echo_blades: Really cool stuff.

Denis Tyrell: He's got those two. I want to say they're steak knives with the wood handles.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Those are beautiful.

echo_blades: Yeah. Just super clean.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Like it.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, totally.

echo_blades: Yeah. um But he was

echo_blades: one of the guys that was, and I saw given some feedback and i really respected his take and how he delivered what he was saying to, to the young man we were talking about. It was just a, just well put, um,

echo_blades: And that, oh, thats that's what it was. It was about the preference, right? um You know, at some point you run out of like things that are functionally or form wrong with the knife and you're just, you know, you're just, you're talking about what you prefer, right?

Denis Tyrell: like yeah

echo_blades: And he did a very good job of of explaining that too. So really cool dude. I just want to give him a shout out. So

Denis Tyrell: Cool stuff. Good one.

echo_blades: yeah, nice.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, it's a good one.

echo_blades: Did you do a Triple T? Because I didn't watch.

Denis Tyrell: Actually, that's a good segue to the Triple T. I did a Triple T all on culinary knives. and approaching culinary knives. And it was it was actually from a lot of the discussions I had with Chris and others at Texas.

Denis Tyrell: And I figured I've never really done um kind of a video on culinary knives specifically. and like tips and tricks and things to watch out for and different grinds and just an overview of culinary knives and what to what to look for in making them. So um yeah, it was pretty well received. um One of the better triple T's as far as viewers viewers that I've had in a while.

Denis Tyrell: So um yeah, it was good.

echo_blades: Nice.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: So we've um we got some unfortunate news. Where do we want to start here? i

echo_blades: Well, we got the, We have the, you mentioned it last week, uh, that our buddy Bob Gore was, uh, going through some, uh, some tough times and having a, just having a rough shake at things for a while. Um, and you had brought that up last week on the show and then our boys, our buddies, uh,

echo_blades: Noah from any ah river forge and Brandon from BCK knives, um, uh, are doing a little fundraiser, um, for Bob. Um, I got a couple of, uh,

echo_blades: or i got some info here for you. It looks like it's a $15 a spot. Um, and I think it's to know us to reach out to know if, uh, and I saw him put out a video too, as well. Um, for, for some specifics, but I think it's, yeah, PayPal Venmo, um, with the,

echo_blades: the the title for Bob, um that'll get you into the the raffle or waffle, whatever the hell it is. um You can win multiple items if you buy multiple spots. um So far, there's 10 plus makers that have donated. if you are a maker and you're looking to donate, reach out to Noah or Brandon. And yeah, let's get this thing built up and um help out.

echo_blades: our, our buddy Bob during this time and just do what our community does and support each other. And, um, yeah, really a good dude. Good cause. Um, really cool, uh, makers. I had a ah list and it's not.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, there's like there's a whole bunch of makers in there now, and I couldn't put something in there at this point, but i certainly already picked up my tickets, so you never know.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Maybe I'll walk away with one of those things, and I'm just happy to help Bob, to be honest, and good to, yeah, he helps everyone.

echo_blades: Right.

echo_blades: Yeah, absolutely.

echo_blades: I'm not sure how long it's running for, um

echo_blades: but yeah, it'll probably be for the for the week, they'll build it up.

Denis Tyrell: Oh yeah, it's probably at least a week. But Noah and Brandon will have more info and I know they've done a few posts.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: So look for those and i'll we'll try to put a link to to one of those posts in the notes.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: in the notes

echo_blades: Yeah. And then, yeah, this is ah this is the shitty part.

echo_blades: It's the real shitty part. And I actually, when my son just texted me the the picture of that car, the post for...

echo_blades: Our buddy ah Nate Waple from Walrus Steel, unfortunately, passed away couple days ago. um And there is a GoFundMe page for um him ah floating around there. I have a link. I will make sure that it goes on the post as well um for for the podcast. But yeah, untimely.

echo_blades: too soon. <unk> good dude. And, uh, yeah, I don't kind of shook me up a little bit today.

Denis Tyrell: it I found out literally today.

echo_blades: Uh, me too.

Denis Tyrell: And it, yeah, the same.

echo_blades: Well, I found out from, from with, from that interaction. Yeah. No,

Denis Tyrell: Yeah. ah I couldn't believe it.

echo_blades: no,

Denis Tyrell: Like, I'm really thrown back. And i was I was in the car on the way from the airport. And, like, I was in Sacramento.

Denis Tyrell: And I told my wife. And she's asking me a bunch of questions. I'm like, I i just don't know. Like, I saw his last post on Facebook.

echo_blades: Yeah, so did He was going to take a break.

Denis Tyrell: saying that he wasn't feeling well and he's going to take a break.

echo_blades: Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: And that's all it said. And I don't know any details. So I know nothing.

echo_blades: No, nothing. I know zero about it. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: and it's I know it was sudden and I just can't believe it.

echo_blades: yeah

echo_blades: Yeah, it's horrible. It's just our our thoughts and prayers for for his family, his kids, and anybody else that was you know had had the had a relationship with him.

echo_blades: He's a good dude. And you know he will definitely be missed.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, for sure. Crazy things.

echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah, it's... a This stuff's not, it's, you know, our normal stuff's easily taken for granted. And, you know, some, unfortunately, moments like this kind of reel it all together. And we we are part of a precious gift of life here.

echo_blades: the Just hold them close.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah.

echo_blades: Yep. Hold them close. Just make sure you tell your buddies that you do podcasts with to to fuck off. So, fuck off, Dennis.

echo_blades: In other words, tell them you love them.

Denis Tyrell: yeah yeah that's that was super sad news and hate this yeah hate to end the show on a bummer but you know he was a good guy and yeah he will be missed for sure

echo_blades: It's a bummer, dude. Yeah, it's just a bummer.

echo_blades: He was definitely good dude. He's a good maker. Great artist. Yeah, just all kinds of stuff. got like out of god got a lot of good memories at the Makers camp with him.

Denis Tyrell: yeah he's got one of my knives he he walked away with my knife from the maker swap

echo_blades: My best one.

echo_blades: um look at that.

Denis Tyrell: So yeah, it was crazy.

echo_blades: Yeah. Yeah, what I do, I did a reel with him. I think I should repost it. And I was like, what we have right here is a rare sighting of a walrus in his natural habitat. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: I remember that.

echo_blades: When he was walking up, uh, first time I saw him, it was pretty good. Oh man. Yeah.

Denis Tyrell: yeah, yeah.

echo_blades: going to miss you, buddy. So, but yeah.

Denis Tyrell: Crazy.

Denis Tyrell: Well, I think we should end the show on that and we'll all think about Nate and yeah, hold people close, man.

echo_blades: Yeah.

echo_blades: for sure. For sure.

Denis Tyrell: All right, guys, we will catch you next week.

echo_blades: And that's a wrap.
