Return of Jared and Podcast Hosting

00:00:18
Speaker
Let's get ready to Triple T Podcast. ah What's up, everybody? This is Jared from Echo Blades, and you're listening to another Triple T Podcast for Knife Makers.
00:00:29
Speaker
I am back. You're welcome. sorry to you Sorry to abandon you again. should apologize for being back. not got No, no, no.
00:00:42
Speaker
Our listenership spikes up. No, we had a good co-host last week. so Brent Smith from Bald, Math, Knife, and Tool, thank you for joining us and saving us from having to listen to my permanent and bestest, most favoritist of all time, Mr. Dennis Terrell. From Terrell Knifeworks. That's right. Dare I say, I kind of almost missed you, buddy. oh Oh, look at that.
00:01:05
Speaker
See? It's all love. It's all love here. missed you, too. I needed some golf info to put me to sleep. I got all kinds for you here, dude.
00:01:16
Speaker
in fact, man, we'll get there. I was being facetious there. I don't really need golf info. Oh, you just wait. You just wait. God, I was going to use that. i know. why I cut you off with the legs.
00:01:34
Speaker
Oh, man. you so How are you? I'm good. You're all refreshed from your

Travel Adventures and Work Reflections

00:01:40
Speaker
travels? Definitely not refreshed. ah I think, yeah so I just got back. ah Well, I didn't just get back, but I left Sunday evening here at like 7.30.
00:01:50
Speaker
seven six or six o'clock ish at night and drove to Sacramento, catch my plane. goal was to get to Washington around like 1030.
00:02:03
Speaker
get there hotel around 11, get up fresh. Plan got delayed like an hour and a half, something like that. i didn't get in until midnight and get to the hotel until after dragging ass on Monday. It was not the day that I needed to be exhausted. The whole point was to avoid When I went to Long Beach a couple weeks back, um we got up. at I had to get up at like 3 in the morning and then catch a flight and get there straight and then start my day from there. So it was it's a long day, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. So um my hope was to to avoid that, but it backfired. and um And I ended up even probably more tired than I would have been had I just got up early and went. But um all good.
00:02:52
Speaker
was cold. Cold up there. colder than, than it's been. Yeah. Um, it was, rent it's always well ah oddly though, the first year I went up there 10 times last year.
00:03:03
Speaker
Um, and, uh, or five times, whatever it is, but, um, 10 flights, five times, uh,
00:03:13
Speaker
It never rained. So Pacific Northwest, like I didn't catch any rain until like the very last trip in December. It was the first time that I caught rain. Yeah. You just hit lucky all those other times. Yeah. No, no doubt. And then December it rained a little bit. and this one was just, it it didn't stop the whole time I was there. And then one of the days I woke up and it was like 30 degrees.
00:03:35
Speaker
So not snowy, icy, slush, like, not Not my jam at all. Kind of to fight my the door to open. was like, what the... But yeah, so that was that was cool, man. It was a crazy week, though. Probably one of the most intense, very busy weeks I've had in a long time. And that's saying a lot. It was, I don't challenging. Busy good or busy shitty? Nah, it was like a combo of...
00:04:08
Speaker
ive got the i really enjoy my time up there with the team. don't, I don't get to see them often or regularly, I should say. So it's always good to get with them, you know, work on some things that, you know, you can't really do over a team's meeting and just get the the face to face with with them.
00:04:26
Speaker
But it sure as shit doesn't matter if I'm not at the office then shit at the office goes a little haywire and, um, Yeah, there was plenty of that. So oddly enough, I wasn't really bothered, but I was completely over inundated with things that were there. So it's kind of like trying to find that balance between trying to focus my time with this team while I have the time there and then deal it with all the other stuff.
00:04:49
Speaker
um But yeah, so I was there till Wednesday, flew out, supposed to leave at 530. And that plane got delayed an hour and a half as well. So another Jesus thing.
00:05:02
Speaker
yeah and it's not like there was nothing going on like it wasn't crazy weather where i was at but apparently where was the plane was where the plane was coming from

Golf Weekend and Podcast Influence

00:05:09
Speaker
like denver i could think they kept saying there was something going on over there but yeah and then uh back at it for thursday friday saturday golfed i had a really good golf weekend it was awesome um Good. Good.
00:05:28
Speaker
Yeah. What my son up a couple of then, uh, Sunday, same thing. Um, and then I had to go to the thing cause I got, uh, my, my new wedges and then, uh, stopped by and saw you on the way there. Cause I was being genuine about like, man, I said, I haven't seen this guy in a long time. And, uh, it was really wanting to go see, you know, say what's up to Kim, but, um,
00:05:55
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, What was going to Yeah, for sure. but what I was going to say was that I went down there, I met the guy that fitted me for my clubs. And i thought it was really cool because while I was there doing that, the couple weeks during that process, um I was chatting him up. And um i probably going to have that that guy give Jared, work with Jared with lessons.
00:06:23
Speaker
But I was chatting them up about knife making because I was pitching the whole, trying to get TaylorMade on board with us, you know just a pipe dream there. But but nevertheless, the ah the guys ended up, I exchanged Instagram and stuff like that. And I was really, it was really cool because ah the guy said, man, you didn you didn't send me the podcast info, but the the other guy was there. He said he he's listened to the past couple episodes. Yeah. And I was like, you know, here we are at the Triple T podcast for knife makers. But we're just we're bringing ever expanding the art and love of knife making to all types of people. Just bringing everyone together. And I can even further this.
00:07:06
Speaker
um, theory because my buddy, uh, good friend of mine work. It just texted me about an hour ago and literally says, I'm sitting here in this shitty hotel.
00:07:19
Speaker
He's back in long beach. So I'm sitting here in this shitty hotel watching shitty TV

Warning Against Sixt Car Rental

00:07:24
Speaker
TV with, um, you know barely any channels, and just stumbling through, and all of sudden i land on this knife-making show.
00:07:36
Speaker
its It's forged in fire. And he goes, and I find myself watching this thing irritated because... I know what they're doing. He's like, I understand the tools that they're using. I feel like I'm about to get a freaking Pelican paste or a mirror braid at waiting to hear frigging two bastards, fat bean, and an evening killed. And he's like, I understand all the concepts, uh, you know, and I'm kind of like critiquing them and education. I don't give a shit about right here on the triple T podcast. I'm like, look at this, man. Just, I mean, we're bringing it all together. You know, you can bust my balls all you want, but you know, we, we, we offer something for everybody. So I thought it was really cool. That was just two instances of of ah you know, just newer type things. So yeah, that that's my, my ultimate peace and love unification of, of what we do here.
00:08:38
Speaker
yeah You never know, Dennis, you never know. yeah I mean, the the the two guys I had for the class, they're brothers. One got the other one. Like, this was a gift for the other one. So they yeah came for a class. But they don't watch the they hadn't watched. They didn't know I was YouTuber. They didn't know any of that. They just, you know, found me on Google and looked me up and came for a class. What a random thing. Like, you're just like That's happened many times lately. So like the whole Google ad, and it's not like I pay for Google ads. I'm just listed on Google.
00:09:15
Speaker
um Like I have like ah ah a business a Google business account or like a or whatever. And yeah, that that shit works. That's crazy.
00:09:27
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I got a question for you. When you go to Washington, do you rent a car? Mm-hmm. Okay. What, what, what car rental place do you use? Enterprise.
00:09:39
Speaker
at Enterprise. So I got a story. So let me say that i was using the, like the, the really, really cheap ones like sticks.
00:09:52
Speaker
six Yeah. Is it six? Okay. And, and like budget or some shit like that. But then I found out that we're like, We're supposed to be using enterprise. So that's what I that's what i do now.
00:10:05
Speaker
Well, I'm going to give everyone a public service announcement and ah to absolutely never use Sixth Car Rental. And here's why. great i had never heard of this company. They're only 10 or 11 years old. I had never heard of them.
00:10:25
Speaker
And they came up with actually like good reviews and they were one of the cheaper ones. Because normally I'll use like Hertz or Enterprise or something like that.
00:10:37
Speaker
Avis is the other one I've used before. yes yeah, Avis as well. So no problem. we We get the car. It's like a Subaru Crosstrek, which is actually a pretty decent car. I'm kidding you get a Subaru. I need to say that.
00:10:56
Speaker
uh it had heated seats and that was like the best feature in chicago let me tell you chicks love that
00:11:06
Speaker
but um no problem with this car we return it the guy asks me hey do you want to just take off and i'm like no no i i want you to you know when i return like i want you to go around and i'm gonna sign the thing that there's no damage um So two days after I get back, I get an email from Sixth saying there was damage to the car.
00:11:30
Speaker
And it contains two pictures of like two scratches that are down to the paint. I'm like, that's fucking bullshit. We did not scratch the car. So the first thing I do is I Google Sixth damage car rental.
00:11:46
Speaker
They had a class action lawsuit last year um for this. And then, oh and afterwards, they they sent me a bill for $1,400 to fix these two scratches.
00:11:59
Speaker
um And I was fucking mad. And it is a total scam. And they are known for doing this. And they had a class action lawsuit last year that they settled, but apparently that didn't do anything. And they're still doing this.
00:12:12
Speaker
So luckily... Um, I, uh, followed some advice from, uh, people, uh, uh, I think it was Reddit and contacted the better business Bureau and actually sent them an email saying, I want the pictures from the last, like when it was returned last I'm contacting, you know, actually, I said, my lawyer requested these and I didn't actually, you know, and,
00:12:40
Speaker
um there's no way I was paying these guys. And ah right before the podcast, like right before I started, I get an email back. And this was like two days ago that I responded.
00:12:52
Speaker
um I get an email right before the podcast saying that they're dropping it. Like you motherfuckers. So,

Promotions and Sponsorships

00:13:01
Speaker
like it yeah, they're just trying to get people. So don't rent from Sixt. And if you do, you better videotape the car, walk around the car with a camera and videotape it before you get in the car because they will they'll come after you.
00:13:19
Speaker
Yeah, that's shitty. Yeah, really shitty. So yeah, that soured my week until 20 minutes ago when I read that email. Okay. Yeah, that's good. No, I always make sure they give me the clean bill of health before I walk off.
00:13:36
Speaker
For sure. Right. And I did that. That's why I made sure that that was part of my complaint to them. It's like, no, no, your guys checked it. If it was scratched, it was scratched when you guys returned it. So yeah, it's all scam.
00:13:50
Speaker
So that sucks, dude. Yeah. But, uh, glad they dropped it. Hey, well, I, okay. So couple of things about last week, good show overall.
00:14:03
Speaker
e I have all kinds sensing of sensing a butt. I have all kinds of, of, of things that are probably not appropriate for, the rest of you guys. Sorry. Um, it's an intimate ball busting, but um I've made sure to, to deliver that news.
00:14:19
Speaker
But um i the most disappointing thing, not a single mention of the US of A whooping Canada for the gold.
00:14:33
Speaker
ah First of all, you know I don't even watch. Not and not only do I not watch hockey, I don't even watch the Olympics. Where do you belong? You're not pissed up for winning the gold, or you're not pissed off for winning the silver.
00:14:50
Speaker
I can't take it with you. You need to pick a side, dude. I mean, we demand this. The Knife community demands you have some kind of emotional reaction. I busted out my brand new golf shoes that morning in my USA red, white, blues.
00:15:06
Speaker
It's not like you watch the game. You're just you're just celebrating that the USA won gold. You're not a hockey fan. I try so hard to watch hockey. It is one of those things that I...
00:15:20
Speaker
a I really just, it's tough. I love going. I've been to shit ton of time. Don't tell me you lose track of where the puck is. No, not necessarily. I don't,
00:15:35
Speaker
it's, a how do I dare, I feel i would feel like a but little bit hypocritical here. I mean, really this out because i love baseball i love football i think golf is probably one of the more entertaining sports ever there but i do find myself losing patience even basketball i i love but it's like hockey's really awesome in the cool moments and i'm not necessarily talking about the fights or anything but you know when they're scoring and anything but just it's like nascar oh ah ah
00:16:11
Speaker
so i'm with not nascar because i don't mind india formula one because at least they're turning they're not just like fucking turning left the entire time like nascar yeah um but uh hockey is actually fun i like i i don't mind watching hockey i like watching hockey if there's somebody that like really knows the game and can like fill me in all the the minor nuances and shit that's going on. Same thing with NASCAR. When I went to go see the the championship race in Phoenix a couple of years back, I was with a bunch of NASCAR guys and they were kind of explaining all the the little things. It got me more interested, but left to my own devices. I'm going to turn it off and watch golf, but...
00:17:01
Speaker
yeah you You have nothing to say. If you enjoy watching golf on TV, you have you should have no opinion on boring sports to watch on TV. I'm not saying it's boring. I'm just saying it's not necessarily my cup of tea. so but yeah I thought it was it was really awesome because we for sure should not Have won. That's your thing.
00:17:24
Speaker
That's Canada's thing. they should They should have won that game. but I mean, homie, homie wins with a penalty shot, blood on his face. I mean, he can't get more America than that. I mean, let's go. It's not even our national sport.
00:17:37
Speaker
Come on.
00:17:39
Speaker
What, what is it? Maple syrup drinking? The, you don't know what the national sport of Canada is? I i have no idea, man. my educate, my edification in Canada is all taking place within the beginning of me making knives. It's okay. Most, most Canadians probably don't know the national sport of Canada is lacrosse.
00:18:02
Speaker
Yeah. I wouldn't have thought that. Yeah, it is. wouldn't have thought that. Yeah. That's a brutal sport. i don't why anybody hey and then congrats to to parker though that was that was really cool i was awesome to hear i'm glad you guys got to to uh i got glad you got to experience that really happy for him um just yeah and now he now he's just fucking around in great lakes because his a school hasn't even started and may not start for a month So all he has to do is show up for muster every morning and then like do what muster, like show up for roll call. Oh,
00:18:42
Speaker
And then he might have some, like an hour of cleaning or bullshit to do. And then he's done. doesn't have to do anything. He gets paid. So he has to go off base and do whatever he wants or. Yeah.
00:18:56
Speaker
That's cool. Yeah. I had somebody say this to me the other day. um I got an easy day at work tomorrow. And I was just, I was so infuriated by the concept of like an easy day, but I'm i'm happy for Parker.
00:19:16
Speaker
I think that's cool. But I guess you don't have days where you've fewer meetings or like, and it's an easy day. Like your boss is out of town. No, that my boss is out of town now. It's ah's almost worse. but yeah No, it it seems as of late that every day is full of excitement and good stuff.
00:19:36
Speaker
I mean, there are some every now and then. means you work too hard. But, yeah, I guess. I don't know, man. That concept, was I said it it made me angry.
00:19:47
Speaker
But I'm all empty there, for sure. You know what I'm doing? You don't do what you love. You never work a day in your life. Yeah, that's bullshit. You know who's really hardworking?
00:19:59
Speaker
Mr. Lawrence Lake at Maritime Knife Supply. That's true. he is... A knife maker. He is business owner and owns Maritime Knife Supply, one of the best places to get all your handle, i handle, material ah all of your knife making material, handles, um abrasive steel, you name it, equipment, tooling.
00:20:27
Speaker
You've got to get it all at Maritime Knife Supply because, you know, it's a great Canadian company up there in Nova Scotia. It is that. Couldn't be any farther from us.
00:20:41
Speaker
That's true. Well, if it was like Labrador, I'd be the but the only place that would be further from us in Canada. Is Labrador like occupied?
00:20:54
Speaker
Isn't it like mostly wilderness up there? like Yeah. It's not very metropolis. Yeah. No, it's like mostly bears and yeah i said penguins, but that'd be the wrong pole.
00:21:09
Speaker
ah Polar bears and seagulls. Mooses, yeah. And mooses. Yeah. And no yeah gypsies.

Event Preparations and Networking Excitement

00:21:21
Speaker
Newfies. He is definitely the king of hustle, though. Yeah. Isn't he about to go into his busy season for his his day job, too? Yeah. Uh, yes. Yes.
00:21:34
Speaker
And he's busy right through summer because he does a um mostly business accounting. So all that stuff even goes later into the year. Yeah. he's the only He's the only person that's like four hours ahead of me that I don't feel guilty texting at 8 o'clock my time because I know the fucker's up.
00:21:53
Speaker
Yeah, he gets like three hours of sleep a night maybe. okay Yeah, but for all your knife making needs, go see ah Lawrence Lake from Maritime Knife Supply and let them know that the boys from Triple T. So what's up?
00:22:07
Speaker
Have you done your taxes yet? No. I finally did all my bookkeeping for 2020. What is it? 2025. I'm ready to do taxes. That might be next week. i gotta do I want to do them before Texas. so No, I definitely won't do them before then.
00:22:24
Speaker
You won't do them before Texas? No. Oh, you're like a wait to the last minute guy. m With everything. Why would taxes be any different? That's for sure.
00:22:37
Speaker
Well, I'm probably getting money back, so that's why i don't want to wait too long. That's a good thing, too. But yeah, I don't know. My goal is to break even and I just keep it that way. Either I want the the the semi good news or the bad news as late as possible.
00:22:56
Speaker
Yeah. Well, I never get the way to do it. So, yeah. Yeah. yeah But you geared up for Blade, Texas. Absolutely not, sir.
00:23:09
Speaker
That's like absolutely not less than three weeks away. Yeah. I mean, I'm geared up as, as I, i can be, i have hopes of maybe, uh, trying to bring a couple of things, but we'll see how it goes. I'm, uh, I'm plenty, plenty overwhelmed with a lot a lot of other things right now. So I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna do it to myself. That's, that's just needless torture.
00:23:33
Speaker
So you don't really have anything. It's not like you're having a table or anything. It's not like you need to be prepared. No, I got a couple of things though that, um,
00:23:46
Speaker
I can, uh, a couple of collabs that i are within reason of finishing that can potentially go out, but that would be it. Um, we'll see. i don't know. Like I said, I'm, I'm good. I'm just super stoked to, to get out there and see everybody and and, hang out and have a little break from, from the, uh, the norm.
00:24:12
Speaker
I think, you know, Oh, what? What time do we get there? Like 9.30?
00:24:20
Speaker
No, really? Yep. We leave around 4 o'clock here. It says 7. Oh, yeah, but it's 7.30 Texas time. Yeah. Oh, okay.
00:24:33
Speaker
Yeah. All right. But, yeah, and then I just found out I got... Potentially have to miss another show that week because I'll be going to Idaho. Easy bastard.
00:24:48
Speaker
I'll be going to Idaho Monday, Tuesday, get back Wednesday, leave Thursday again. So. All right. I'll just replace you again. Mm-hmm.
00:25:00
Speaker
What's an effort doing this time? oh Oh, Brent was an effort. is that what you're saying? I did call up Brent last minute. So I know you did. not Oh yeah. That was the thing. yeah yeah And then you two trying to be super cute about hiding the fact that he's got a table at at blade.
00:25:16
Speaker
I just thought that was so, so cute. It was Brent couldn't wait. If he would have waited like three hours, we would have just announced it on the podcast and made you hear it there.
00:25:29
Speaker
That would have been funny. that would have been That would have been funny. i would have That would have been funny. Getting there, though, and like seeing him, that would have been stupid.
00:25:39
Speaker
what I know that wasn't really even possible. Yeah, there was never a possibility because he would have wanted to announce it on social media, which you would have saw. so Yeah.
00:25:50
Speaker
Oh, and then... You just blocked you for the next three weeks. Yeah. I had a really cool thing. So... Yeah, he could have done that. I don't really even go on. So oh I don't, yeah, I really don't go on that much. um I thought it was pretty cool because um I'm really excited to go Texas to to see all all the makers, all my buddies, all the people who spend some money.
00:26:16
Speaker
Looking forward to seeing Matt from sponsors. Yeah. Yeah. yeah And seeing that Matt from Grip Tech Composites. He tech, he he messaged me after the the last show I was on because we were talking about like i don't know if he's going to be there and then he he messaged me and said I'm going to be there and I was like that's great I'll make sure to talk it <unk> up while I'm not on the show next week I meant to reach out to you and I didn't so when Brent kind of googled it up and said that he was going to be there i was like okay good I feel better about it now But if you're in the, if you're the market for some really cool hand and material, uh, go check out grip tech composites. That's a grip tech official on IG and grip tech.com maker of grip X grip X 3d limitless, uh, the limitless kind for, um, finishing at, um, taking it up to the higher grit for a shinier finish. Um, all comes out, uh, super grippy. Um, what is it this week?
00:27:12
Speaker
Three, two, ah Crimson Veil Limitless seic edition. Crimson Veil.
00:27:21
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. um Make sure you guys are signing up for the ah newsletter that he has going on in that newsletter. He gives you out a code for a um weekly color where you can get a discount on. And as of now, you can double up on that discount with the Triple T 10.
00:27:40
Speaker
ah But yeah, go check out Grip Tech, all the cool stuff that he's got going on. And like i said, load up the cart and use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off. And make sure you hustle that code up there at Texas and try to get you some double down on those cool deals that be having there. So I'm super looking forward to to yeah hanging out with Matt too as well.
00:28:04
Speaker
I had, speaking of grip tech, I finished a knife yesterday with grip tech and it actually was, so, you know, I have like my granite surface plate and I usually keep my knives in process on that. Well, I guess one had fallen behind it.
00:28:18
Speaker
So I had a, ah like a Santa, it was totally done. I just had to router it. sand it um so i mean i lightly sandblast sanded and then sandblasted because it's grip tech and some so i've had a knife there that's basically been done so i did i finished it during the class on sunday um yeah it's first time i've back actually sandblasted the grip tech and i also it was it was composite grip tech and g10 and uh sandblasted the g10 and that actually came out nice too so it was really uh
00:28:52
Speaker
really happy with that it'll be up on the website uh tomorrow awesome yeah so uh and it's the gray the gray grip tech which i do love uh because it kind of goes with every color um yeah so yeah go get some yeah and then what you should do is uh use a Pelican oil um to finish and shine that thing up. um And you should do the same. So go to pelicanpaste.com, check out Travis Haynes from Pelican Paste, maker of hard wax, soft wax, Pelican oil, hand-solve, soap, butternut, cast iron, pan seasoning. He's got it all.
00:29:32
Speaker
um It really works well. That Pelican oil really brings out the Grip-X. Super simple. Awesome to do. Load up the cart with the discount code TTT10 and get yourself 10% off your next order at pelicanpace.com.
00:29:49
Speaker
Nice.
00:29:52
Speaker
um Yeah, so now now that... It was actually just now I looked at the calendar and saw that it's less than... two and a half weeks to, um, what's that?
00:30:04
Speaker
i was going to say like three weeks down. Yeah. Uh, to Texas, uh, I got finish. I'm almost done the dagger. Uh, I, today I finished all the gold inlay. Uh, I did, I did a major screw up though.
00:30:20
Speaker
Um, so I was gonna put a little design in the dagger, in the Ricasso, right above the guard, a little design that I was going to do gold inlay.
00:30:34
Speaker
And now I'm doing the gold inlay, the channel for the gold inlay with the laser. But, and they warned me. So the laser I have, um it's still, I won't say it's a prototype, but they've, I got it before it's even, like it's not available to buy yet.
00:30:54
Speaker
So there's a few little, this is like early adopter glitches, which they're going to fix in the firmware. But they warned me that the, you know, when you frame it, um you know, shows you the little image and then it, you know, so you can position the, you know, the, your, whatever you're lasering, you know what I'm talking about?
00:31:14
Speaker
Well, they warned me that that is off, but I forgot so comes off no no as in like where it lasers is not exactly where that frame is oh it's off by about an eighth of an inch um and when i was on the design or that's just the way it came out you can calibrate it i just didn't read instructions it's my fault i didn't read the instructions to calibrate this thing oh that's weird i got a cool story about that as well
00:31:48
Speaker
um So what I should have done is I should have done a little, which I did on the the guard when I did it, is like use layout let layout fluid and then do a a light laser that would just, you know, laser off the fluid and then do it that way.
00:32:07
Speaker
So I went and lasered in and I, and as soon as it did like the deep mark, I'm like, oh shit, it's not centered. And it's really obvious, right? Cause it's a dagger. And if it's, if the little image is off by an eighth of an inch, it looks goofy. I'm like, oh, okay. Well, I just adjusted it by eye, flipped it over and just had it go.
00:32:27
Speaker
Well, I come back and now this, the channel is like, you know, it's almost a sixteenth of an inch deep. Um, And on the other side, it's off in the other direction.
00:32:41
Speaker
So now I have one side that I would totally have to sand off, and then the other side, which is impossible, I can't remove it. It's like a sixteenth of an inch through into the blade.
00:32:54
Speaker
So I've decided going to... drill use um um use a carbide bit and actually drill through the the ricasso right there and just put a little actual relief hole

Knife-Making Projects and Setbacks

00:33:10
Speaker
that i'm going to file and make it a little design in the blade and it's going to be tiny it's only like ah about three eighths wide so it'll look cool but It wasn't exactly what I wanted, but I think it'll come out cool. You guys will see it in the video maybe next week, I think, depending on when I get this done. but It could be yeah could be a little sketchy there, huh? Yeah, i was um there was some swear words for sure after I noticed that.
00:33:40
Speaker
But, yeah, ah all I have to do is that, um sand the blade, etch it, And then hot black the fittings and put the whole damn thing together.
00:33:53
Speaker
So it's close. And I'm already working on the next knife, which I really want to get done for Texas. But now I'm looking at the schedule and I don't know if I can do it. But we'll see. Because I got classes Friday, Saturday this week and then Monday, Tuesday next week.
00:34:12
Speaker
So that's a little fly in the ointment kind of thing.
00:34:19
Speaker
But yeah, but it's making money since I'm not selling that many times right now because I'm keeping them all for a review. So, Oh yeah.
00:34:30
Speaker
But yeah, we'll see. So, but I did get, I got it. Okay. Go ahead. No, you go No, you go. I did get some good news that the Sandshark is now up for sale on USA Knife Maker. So another site selling the Sandshark and then soon the Perfect Blade Sharpening Attachment also will be for sale up on USA Knife Maker.
00:35:01
Speaker
So another place you can get Tyrell Knifeworks tooling. Shameless self-plug coming at you. That's right.
00:35:13
Speaker
Come on, give me another one. You didn't um ah yeah you didn't listen listen to Knife Talk last week? No. No. I heard some grumblings about it, but apparently you called in like a listener question. or No, ro no, no.
00:35:31
Speaker
No, Fader just called me out. um I guess okay he requested that people do like an elevator pitch. and And then I don't know how the sand shark got mentioned or something like that. And he's like, oh, Dennis, you better send in an elevator pitch oh yeah on the sand shark. So, yeah. Did you do it?
00:35:53
Speaker
i i but... So who was it? It was Steve um Lockhart. Yeah, that's a good mention to him. He said, so you're going to send one in to Fader? And i'm like I didn't know what he was talking about because I hadn't listened to the episode yet. So by the time I heard it, I think they'd already recorded this week's episode. so why honor but um But Fader said, yeah, he would he would die he would talk it up in the next episode.
00:36:19
Speaker
But wait, there's more.
00:36:26
Speaker
Yeah. That's funny. Yeah. That's a bummer, man. I didn't get to hang out with ah Steve Lockwood this time. ah
00:36:37
Speaker
Yeah. We were going to have dinner. Like I always try to do when I'm up that way, but I think Tuesday was the day and yeah I didn't even leave the office until like six 30 or it was close. And then I had to,
00:36:53
Speaker
I would add to take a break and then go back and finish some stuff up. And he was coming in from where it just didn't work out. Was he even home though? Cause he was at delicious shop for a class. He was back. oh Yeah. That's where we we were going to have dinner. He was going to tell me about the class and he was working too. So we were going to kind of like just meet up somewhere for dinner instead of hanging out at ah at his house. But didn't just didn't work out this time.
00:37:15
Speaker
But while I was talking to him, he did mention something about the, the knife talk thing. Yeah. Which was... Yeah, that's funny. But I got a listener question here from Keith Tohensing. I think that's how you say his name. Tohensign? Tohensing?
00:37:33
Speaker
Sure. Is that Ring Bell? I so i don't know how to say it. He told me at one point, but I don't remember. I think it's Tohensing. Anyways. um Yeah, because I'm a bag.
00:37:47
Speaker
Apparently he hit me up with a question a while back, but... It's I'll summarize it. It's the question of how do you keep, your passion for knife making when you're full-time? Like, you know, I just was just jokingly saying, you know, you do what you do, you do what you love every day. You'll never work a day in your life.
00:38:10
Speaker
But I guess as a full-time maker, um and since you're a full-time guy now, um you ever lose steam?
00:38:21
Speaker
What do you do to try to keep it well just thinking about it brought the reason why i brought it up because you're talking about teaching and stuff like that which i think probably helps yeah i mean i've got my answer to this question i think different people have different answers um i always like to be doing something new and like trying something i've never done so i'm not one of the production guys i think if you asked brent or or coakley or or one of these guys that just do production knives they might have a different answer because they are doing the same thing over and over but um or similar stuff coming up and maybe coming up new models or something like that but yeah between doing new stuff um and also taking a break from like
00:39:13
Speaker
maybe maybe it's taking a break from doing the same thing like oh i'll work on tooling one day or hey now i'm gonna i'm gonna do folders for a couple of rounds and then go back to fixed blades and just just changing it up yeah i think changing it up is kind of the best explanation whether that means tooling whether that means um teach classes, whatever it is, just having some variety. Cause yeah, if you, I think if you're in the shop making the same knife day in, day out, yeah, it's going to start to grind at you pun intended. Um, and ah you're going to lose some steam.
00:39:57
Speaker
Um, so that was my, my whole warning on, um, the video from a couple of weeks ago is yeah you got to realize that if this is going to turn into a job, if you go full time.
00:40:11
Speaker
So, yep. And there's no escaping that. That's probably one of the toughest parts. Yeah. There's no, no getting around that. If you're relying on it for income, then it becomes work and Yeah.
00:40:25
Speaker
Yeah. But if it's not, and I don't think Keith's full time. um Yeah. Keep it fun. Do something different and yeah. Challenge yourself.
00:40:37
Speaker
No, I think you do a pretty good job of that. Even before you were um full time, you're always yeah kind of pushing the envelope on doing something that you've never done.
00:40:51
Speaker
Yeah. Which is, I guess that's a pretty good trait to have when you're doing it regularly now. Right. That's all you're doing. So that's cool. Yeah. um Then he came back with the then he came back with the the very first golf question.
00:41:07
Speaker
but
00:41:10
Speaker
You're lying. No, I swear. Why do you keep talking about it? Is that the question? No, I'm never going to stop by the way. So ah he goes, he asked if you could golf anywhere in the world, where where would you golf and why?
00:41:27
Speaker
i was like, yeah that's odd. When I think about it, where I would probably be, yeah, it would probably be something like Augusta. um There's some really like offhand courses and you wouldn't go to like Scotland or something. i would love to. I don't know if it's like a dream of mine at all. I did golf Pebble Beach. That was that was definitely on the top of the list.
00:41:54
Speaker
And I did that. I'd go back too. That was that was awesome. But yeah, I think it would probably be currently right now, like either St. Andrews or or Augusta, something like that.
00:42:07
Speaker
Just because you what I felt when I was golfing Pebble Beach was like I'm like, I almost felt bad because like, I'm probably somewhere near one of the greats in the sport, hit a fantastic job and I shake it into the fucking water. There's probably more golf balls in that water off hole number seven. Oh geez. I did not put it in the water on seven. I did. The one is a eight where you're hitting across the the Carmel.
00:42:38
Speaker
Freaking peninsula thing there. And I did shove the first one. Didn't quite make it over. But um yeah, that would that that would probably be it. I used to scuba dive in Stillwater Cove there. Is that what the name is Yeah, right off of the seventh hole there.
00:42:57
Speaker
And yeah, there's there's definitely golf balls in there. Oh, for sure. Yeah, it's beautiful. Beautiful course. Cypress is another one, which is the like the it's actually Cypress supposed to be A little nicer, but it's a private club, not public.
00:43:16
Speaker
So really exclusive. But it has another signature par 3, very similar to L7. Where's Cypress? Like two blocks down. It's literally like right next door on the 17th mile. Cypress Point, it's called.
00:43:32
Speaker
Okay, okay. I forgot it was... yeah Yeah, i got I got kicked out of the out of the shop. I cruised in there because you go on the 17-mile drive, which is a beautiful drive. Like, that's yeah one of the coolest drives around. um And I pulled in and I walked into the to the golf shop trying to buy something. And they're like, hey, get out of here, Mexican. Yeah.
00:43:59
Speaker
where's your leaf blower get out of here
00:44:03
Speaker
wouldn't even let me buy anything really you need a membership to buy it buy something apparently i don't know maybe the guy was having a bad day yeah but i i had the kids in tow sort like it was almost like the time i was at uh at uh in pacific grove at a bed and breakfast and uh lynn's work had put us up and is this the one they asked you uh Yeah. And I'm in there. I wake up in the morning because I get up early and and i go downstairs to, the I don't know if any of you guys ever done the bed and breakfast. I, I, not my thing.
00:44:39
Speaker
i'd I prefer to, to have some, a lot more privacy, but the, the whole concept is, you know, you're, you're in a house with a bunch of rooms. Right. And then I, one of the coolest things I've ever said, a guy I work with, like a fitter is an installer.
00:44:55
Speaker
he's like, oh, I stayed at the bread and breakfast. And then he's like, I mean, you get up and you go down to have breakfast with all these strangers in the morning, right? Like, because they're making you your breakfast. And he's ah he's like, I'm looking around and I see all everybody all with with fucked up hair and shit. And just all standing around looking at I don't know what you guys did last night.
00:45:14
Speaker
like You dirty guys. Yeah. But I was sitting down and was having this conversation, at this huge window, like really big window. It was one of those Monterey days where the, uh,
00:45:28
Speaker
really stormy, big waves crashing it and it it kind of overlooks Lover's Point. And I'm having this conversation with these people from like Kentucky or Georgia or Carolina or somewhere out there and um really nice couple. and I'm just chatting it up. And then this, this old white guy comes up to me and while I'm talking them and, and looks me dead square in my face and he goes,
00:45:49
Speaker
why don't you guys have any silverware out right now? i was like I was like, yeah, I was wondering the same thing because I want to get some cereal or something like that. And he's like, you know, if you guys have the the the the the dining room open, you should have some silverware. out And then I took second and I'm like, oh you think I work here?
00:46:12
Speaker
You didn't think to ask this nice couple right next to me?
00:46:18
Speaker
So did you embarrass him? Oh, yeah. I did it just like that. I was like, I'm sorry to tell you, buddy, but I paid to be here just like you did. yeah I'm equally unimpressed with there being no silverware. And then he kind of like, he kind of worked off.
00:46:33
Speaker
A couple hours later, Lynn woke up and we were down having, having an actual, having breakfast. And he actually did walk up to me and said, and apologized. He was like, I am so sorry, man. I don't know what came over me. you like And I was fras gracious, but I wasn't trying to be an ass, but...
00:46:52
Speaker
That was highlight. It's one of my favorite stories ever. How come that happens when I'm with you? Yeah, I don't know. cause probably Yeah, I don't know. I'm pretty sure. Give it give a time. I'll be asked to do the dishes or something. But yeah, they kicked me. They kicked me right out of that clubhouse anyways. You know what? i'm a bu you know It's kind of a bummer. I'm just realizing as we head into March now, the beginning of March,
00:47:21
Speaker
Is that our, uh, Oh, you were talking about like, uh, shifting things up, switching things up. And, uh, I, I don't think we did not do a lot of, uh, forging or Damascus making this winter.
00:47:39
Speaker
We did not. And it's, it's going to cook. the It's exactly what I was thinking this weekend. Like, man, it's already getting warm. It was like 74 degrees on a Saturday. Dude, it's beautiful.
00:47:53
Speaker
Yeah, it's already getting warm. Yeah, I mean, 75, that's great. That's not that's nothing to bitch or complain about at all. But it you when it gets hot here in a couple, three, four months, we're going be seriously recurring. didn't have a warm, hot summer last year, so I think we're going to get baked this year.
00:48:12
Speaker
Oh, you're tripping, dude. We got cooked last year. Not really. oh are yeah. Oh, yeah. it was it was plenty hot I think we had fewer days above 100 than we normally do.
00:48:24
Speaker
I had like seven or eight days in like 113 or something like that here. Well, it was the surface of the sun. What can I tell you?
00:48:35
Speaker
But the cool thing about this, even if you did miss the Damascus making season of winter, we got you covered. You can go check out Koi Baker and the boys at Baker Forge and Tool, makers of some elite premium pattern welded steel.

Frank and beans. and we I still need you to get i still need you to get one of your students to do me a freaking a promo of, ain't it grand to have a fat peen in your hand. These guys would have done it.
00:51:43
Speaker
Yeah. Those are cool dudes. Yeah. I, I, yeah. on earth I mean, all of your students are cool in case they're listening, but some are cooler than others. ah These guys are super upbeat and yeah, that was, that was pretty cool. Yeah. They were, they were thrilled. They, they loved the class and they were good students. looked there but again They looked like they were having a good time.
00:52:04

So go check them out. ah I was going to mention Ameribraid, but I think you should. yeah Go ahead. do you got great I want to close out with that.
00:52:58
Speaker
Oh, fuck it. We'll go right now. If you're in the market for the best grinder in town, go check out Ameribrade.com maker of the two by 72 fastback in the hyper disc, uh, got all of the, uh, your grinding, needs taking care of their amazing machine. um only, only issues. If you're a dumb ass,
00:53:23
Speaker
And there's two of them right here. you got And you're listening to the two top offenders right now. But before you hear this wonderful story about dumbassery, make sure you go ah use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off your accessories. As well as for the first time they're actually doing this, you can get a discount on the machines ah by using the discount code TTT. That's TTT.
00:53:52
Speaker
um for a a pretty good discount on on the overall machine package there. So anyways, the boys at Ameribraid were kind enough to send over a ah grinder for me. I was super stoked to get it last week. For whatever reason, though, they they sent me a VFD wired for 110, and I'm set up for 220. So I was talking with Dennis.
00:54:23
Speaker
And they sent a 220 motor. Well, they send it to a two horse motor. So, um, so we' was talking with Dennis, uh, about, um, my, my thought was that we could switch up the VFD and and wire it and get it all hooked up. and he's like, yeah, yeah, yeah. i Just no problem.
00:54:41
Speaker
We, we, we checked that it's the exact same model of VFD. So really it comes down to switches and jumpers inside of the VFD. And it says on the website that you can, you can redo the, the wiring and and the thing on all of the FDs for 110 to, to be converted over to 220 with a two horse motor. So anyways, these two fucking geniuses get together and, uh, put up, put our, uh, really empty brains in one room and start doing some comparisons side by side. And, figure instead of actually reading any instructions or reaching out to to Kevin and Eric. So, um, I was under the impression. was trying not to be, you know, a pain in the ass and hit them up and, you know, bed just trying not to be problematic about, you know, what would just happen. And I thought we could, we could handle it. So, um, anyways, we did it, uh, nailed it, everything one for one, switched down my plug, uh, on Saturday night.
00:55:44
Speaker
and, uh, gearing up for, um getting the machine machine up and running so I could get some stuff done on, on Sunday afternoon and, uh, get it all ready to go. i plug it in lights up.
00:56:00
Speaker
I get these, uh, couple of flashing lights and, uh, Yeah. Snap, crackle, pop. the two So the Mirabra has two switches that have like these rubber or plastic you know protectors on on the on the knobs. These fucking things. like I thought it was like in a in Bizarro world or anything. But when you shoot 220 into something that's not supposed geared up to accept it, apparently it tries to give it back.
00:56:31
Speaker
And those rubber, those knobs, they inflated like two big old balloons. yeah And then the freaking, the, the cover popped and yeah. And it comes down to it as we got everything dialed in except one thing. And yeah we didn't, we did. there' we fucked up There's these tiny little jumpers that we got, but we didn't see that there's actually two wires that you have to move.
00:56:58
Speaker
that actually say that it's so bad you picture it says 115 volt right on it yeah uh like right on the circuit board uh so we you know totally spaced didn't look didn't look at the instructions shooting from the hip. Oh, didn't ask, didn't take advantage of probably the one of the best companies in our business for customer service. Yeah. You you call them up. Um, you know, they, I, I still think it's one of the greatest things, uh, coolest thing that has happened when I, when I did buy my, my hyper disc, I got a, a phone call from Kevin, a text message actually, you know, saying, Hey, thank you for your order.
00:57:41
Speaker
Um, you have any questions or you need anything, feel free to, to hit me up. That's my personal number, blah, blah, blah. Um, and just awesome. So anyways, I sent Kevin a text message today. It was pretty lengthy one, but I just said, you know, be prepared, uh, shameful, incoming shameful text of dumbassery or something like that coming at you.
00:58:03
Speaker
it kind of explained the situation. Um, and, uh, yeah. So anyways, I got to send that back and they're going to send me a, another VFD, but just to test. you sended pray It's probably toast. Yeah. Yeah.
00:58:19
Speaker
I don't know. He asked me to send it back. I didn't, I didn't ask any questions. Just let me know what I need to do. You know you want, you know, dollars, community service, something, anything, you know, I just. Jared's picture on a poster, what not to do.
00:58:36
Speaker
I almost sent the video, but I was like, yeah, nah, these fuckers will probably use it. So, yeah, I'll box it up and ship it. And I actually owe him something else too that I just came across too. So. Did you did you open it and look inside?
00:58:52
Speaker
Yeah, that's how i that's what I sent you. Oh, that's right. so yeah soon i can think I took a picture of of yours when you opened it on saturday on right yeah Sunday. And then when I got back to the house, I was like, this is going to either say something's fucked up or we did something. And that was the first thing that popped out to me. I'm like, oh, hey, look at these two little wires going up here this 115 connection. And yours didn't was missing one of those wires and looped itself back in. Yeah.
00:59:22
Speaker
uh yeah but it actually didn't i didn't look at the picture that well but um everything looked like the burnt the circuit board was no it actually looked good in there
00:59:34
Speaker
but the whole front is blown off thank you so not i still work i'm not yeah i'm not i don't know you should have tried just uh moving the wires it might still work but yeah Maybe I will. but Something tells me, though, with with the explosion and the 10 minutes of smoke coming out of it, it's probably toast.

01:00:16
Speaker

01:01:56
Speaker
Oh, dude. Would you want me to respond? Damn. I don't know. yeah i don't know. i just, you're aloof on a lot of things. You're probably like, I never told you to do that. yeah That would have been. I didn't tell you to actually turn it on yeah

01:02:25
Speaker
it's still funny to me for some reason. I don't know why it's funny to me now. Yeah. I mean, it was not funny that night, but no, after, after I worked through it and accepted, you know, what else isn't funny is not being able to sell knives. And that's why everyone agrees the drop point. I'm going to have some knives go up in the drop point.
01:02:46

01:04:52
Speaker
um But the post is like a collab. So it looks like um he utilized some steel from Mike Norris 4.
01:05:03
Speaker
um The pattern on this is really cool. Um, that's what kind of stopped me from looking at it. Um, and Dennis and I were just discussing it earlier, trying to figure it out, but the, uh, yeah, I don't know how to say it's like so some kind of like a raindrop topographical, um, weird pattern. Got some, uh, skills from, uh, mammoth molar from
01:05:35
Speaker
age. craft something LLC. Um, and then concealment underscore solutions did the sheath, but the, the sheath perfectly matches the, the pattern on the blade, but really cool little, uh, knife here. Um, so I wanted to shout him out and it seems through some digging around that the, uh, the maker is as rugged mountain blade. So make sure you go check him out. Um, give him a follow and, um, the other guys to, um, the the steel was made from um mike norris for all one word um so yeah ah really cool and then just kind of cruising through his uh his page as well man uh just all kinds of cool stuff just shit uh folders lot of fixed blades um just really cool stuff so definitely worth a uh a follow and and a checkout so
01:06:33
Speaker
Yeah, I think I see some some Baker Forge steel, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, oh, I see. Oh, no, that's that same knife. I'm like, oh, I see another knife with that same steel he used, but it's that same knife.
01:06:47
Speaker
um Yeah, it's some cool stuff. He's got some cool designs, too. Yeah, really cool stuff. Yeah, very cool.
01:06:56
Speaker
What you got? This week, I have um Lucas Perez Perez Perez I don't know how to say it he is from Brazil um So it's Lucas Perez, P-R-E-S knives, no underscores or BS, but just some really beautiful blades.
01:07:22
Speaker
Just, yeah, love them. some Obviously, my style of, you know, it's got buoys and doors. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Really clean.
01:07:33
Speaker
Yeah, very, very clean stuff. The Brazilians are, man, they are on top of the knife making for sure. But I like the one that's four or five down.
01:07:46
Speaker
um It's the, I forget what you call these, but it's like the spheres on the end of the guard. um I don't know what you call those.
01:07:56
Speaker
Like the balls on the end of end of each tying of the guard. I think those look cool. I've never done one of those, but I'd like to. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
01:08:07
Speaker
And he's got those, i don't know what they call them, those gaucho knives that have that, um, between the, like at the ricasso area, it's always filed. So it's almost like spherical between the blade and the, um, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. That's very common for, um, Brazilian knives. The gaucho knives are very,
01:08:29
Speaker
very common for those guys I think that's their that's their Bowie knife kind of thing um but yeah beautiful works I like the king of the Turkish twist what's that So like the kings of the Turkish twist?
01:08:46
Speaker
That knife you're looking at has like some super tight Turkish twist pattern on that thing. don't know which one you're looking at. The one I'm looking at is mono, but oh yeah, that's a different. I was looking at the one that's two down from that, but see what the one you mean. Similar guards. Yes, yes. Yeah, I went past this one, but yeah, that is a Turkish twist for sure.
01:09:12
Speaker
Yeah. Really cool. Very cool. Oh, yeah. I see that you're talking about. Yeah. It's very similar. But the antler. Yep. Yeah. So go give him ah go give him a follow. He has got 1,636 followers, which I'm surprised because he does amazing work.
01:09:32

01:09:44

01:09:55
Speaker
So we did a little summer summary video on that. I don't know what my video is going to be this week, but there's definitely going to be one. I just got to figure out a topic. Someone actually did...
01:10:09
Speaker
suggest a topic to me. I won't do it this week, but I will probably do it maybe before Texas, which is what do you, suggestions for going to a show, like how to display knives for a show.
01:10:27
Speaker
am I might actually, sorry, I'm going to do this before Atlanta. Because this year in Atlanta, I'm going for a totally different display. I'm actually going to be building a display.
01:10:39
Speaker
um I can't even explain it It's going to have like magnetic knife holders is the plan. So the knives are elevated and on a 45. So you'll see the knives if you're walking by.
01:10:53
Speaker
um But I got a bunch of suggestions on, you know, minimal things all the way up to, you know, If you're going to spend some money on on a table, on on things for your table, some suggestions. But as far as a video for this week, um yeah, I'm not sure. If there's things you guys really want to see, drop me line and on Instagram and I'll consider it.
01:11:21
Speaker
But I'll probably just find ah find a topic to discuss in the next couple of days.
01:11:31
Speaker
I have a, I know I'm thinking it's dangerous and you're lagging like crazy. So I'm getting every other word. ah
01:11:44
Speaker
Yeah. We'll do it next week. I got a couple of ideas. I don't even know if if we can work it out, but think I got cool, cool idea for us for maybe next week. Is this like a bit? Yeah.
01:11:58
Speaker
ah Yeah, I don't know, for for a new, for a show theme. I'll just fucking say it. I don't know if we can even work it out, but I was thinking about kind of putting out a post this week and maybe trying to get some of our our buddies that are going to be at Texas and having tables, maybe kind of giving, doing a, like a combine of a handful of segments of people and having them on the show.
01:12:30
Speaker
Not like, like, not like a free sausage party, fuck bestest of everybody trying to like get people on it. Yeah, no, no. But yeah, I don't know if it's possible to get a couple of, you know, 10, 15 minute, a little segment bits put together or something like that, or maybe grab a couple or.
01:12:48
Speaker
Yeah. I think we could probably like record a few 15 minute sessions with people and then have an episode that's really um ah a bunch of 15 minute shows yeah put together. Yeah.
01:13:02
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. We should do that. I think so. So yeah, if you guys are interested, hit us up, it myself on the triple T or ah Dennis either way. Yeah. If, if there's any interest in that, give us a hit up and we'll ah we'll try to put something together. Love to give you guys the opportunity to, you know, talk about what you got coming up and um check in and,
01:13:28
Speaker
yeah, think would be pretty cool. Sounds good. Yeah. All right, man. I'm going to go do some more bookkeeping. Yeah, I'm going to more taxes.
