Introduction to Triple T Podcast

00:00:15
Speaker
What's happening, everybody? Welcome to another Triple T podcast for Knife Makers. I'm your host, Jared Sandoval from Echo Blades. And as always, I have my dearest old buddy.
00:00:30
Speaker
Let me tell you about my best friend. He's a warm-hearted person. Love me to the end. People always take it that he's so much fun.

Meet Dennis Terrell from Terrell Knifeworks

00:00:42
Speaker
Dennis Terrell from Terrell Knifeworks.
00:00:44
Speaker
Yo. What's up, buddy? I'll tell you what. I'm just going to start this out with saying that I consistently tease you about being an emotionalist robot. Yeah.
00:00:59
Speaker
Thanks. And you did a post that absolutely touched and warmed my heart, dude. I thought that was the sweetest thing that you have ever done by far. Made me laugh, made me smile. And I just wanted to say thank you, buddy. That was really cool.
00:01:15
Speaker
Even though I think you're calling me a you know a short bust kind of person, like a you know window licker. Have you seen that movie?
00:01:26
Speaker
I don't think I have. It's actually really good. You should see it. What what is it?

Movie Talk: Massive Talent with Nick Cage

00:01:31
Speaker
It's the, what is something like the overwhelming burden of massive talent or something like that? It's got Nick Cage and... Yeah, Nick Cage plays himself.
00:01:44
Speaker
oh Oh. No, i'm not I don't think I've ever seen it. But yeah, I can... It's actually pretty funny. and in that In that scene, there you got to watch the movie. I will watch it. I completely relate to Pedro's expression, though.

Stress, Blade Show Comfort, and Serenity Tools

00:02:02
Speaker
What's funny is tray Trey Hill said, yeah, that's exactly the look Jared has walking around Blade Show. Yep. That's my happy place.
00:02:13
Speaker
Yeah. My carefree, don't have to worry about, excuse me, um work. which is being an absolute nightmare right now.
00:02:24
Speaker
It is just some, sometimes it's tough. Sometimes it's tough to, to do the grind. Um, you know, things happen that are out of your control. And, you know, like I said before, you know, if you're responsible for everything in a certain department, then that, that, that the bad comes with that.
00:02:44
Speaker
And, um, Unfortunately it happens. So that's been very trying. um I've had to do quite a bit. I've had to actually a kind of like reset my, my, I don't to say so Your patience meter.
00:03:00
Speaker
I don't know if it's patience. It's more of like a spirit thing. Like, yeah, in recovery, we talk about serenity and trying to maintain, you know, and even cook for, for person like me, I could say um I'm, I'm pretty up and down.
00:03:15
Speaker
And trying to maintain and a level even keel is is challenging to say the least because, yeah, I'm super emotional, responsive, but that swings pretty, pretty high and low. But I've had to kind of like reset and really focus on trying to handle negativity.
00:03:35
Speaker
in a more manageable way because you know life is full of things that we don't want and you know how we respond to it is is more important than you know trying to prevent the shit from happening so um i was talking to a buddy about it and he hit me with a uh pretty basic tool in recovery called a gratitude list and if there's anything that can potentially make you more ungrateful, it's trying to write down things to be grateful for. It is, it sounds super simple and, but Lord, you know, you try not to be cheesy. I'm grateful to wake up today, you know, but yeah I, you know, I woke up on the right side of the dirt you know, all this stuff like that. But it, in order to try to you know, you know, the the whole choose joy um mantra thing I have going, goes by the wayside. It's like the first thing that leaves me when shit hits the fan. But man, if if it's not those stupid basic things, you know, like I'm grateful for my family. I'm grateful for that. You know, and we've had some unfortunate things happen in our community here as well.
00:04:44
Speaker
And it's easy to take those things for granted. And I'm I'm extremely grateful for for the opportunity to people in my life to to remind me to, you know, just take a deep breath and focus on the on the small, positive little things to to kill the the rage train. Because that shit gets ramped up and going. Don't let it eat you up.

Life Reflections: Retirement and Family Time

00:05:08
Speaker
Yeah. You know, well, the good thing is, is that I looked at my retirement today and Dennis, I have great news.
00:05:17
Speaker
What's that? I can possibly one day retire when I'm about 100.
00:05:26
Speaker
Well, you got to knock that down to double digits and you'd be doing good. Yeah. Maybe 99. Yeah. That's, that's probably within my reach. um But yeah, no, it's been, it's been one of those things. So, um but yeah, in despite all of that um I've, I've done a pretty good job. i I was able to successfully check out from all the bullshit on Friday and kind of yeah one ah Another tool of mine is to to not bring that shit home.
00:05:54
Speaker
um That's good. Yeah. It's like, you know, when I try to check it out the door um and I was pretty successful this week, even though the back of my mind, every time it would come up, I'd be like, nope, not doing it.
00:06:07
Speaker
So I had a good weekend. um I didn't hear from you all weekend. What'd you do? None. um I golfed and worked in the shop. that's That's what I did. It's been perfect for you. Yeah. I spent time with the, with the family, did a little bit of everything. It was nice and nice and chill. I ended up shooting 88, both Saturday and Sunday, which is fantastic. If anybody's wondering. And then I ended up golfing with the guy that um I did one of those back alley golf ball deals on Facebook marketplace.
00:06:41
Speaker
as ah So I put them in your ball holder. That's what I want to know. No, they're not fit. I gotta to got to do it. John was telling me. the Apparently, you got to work the balls in because they're a little tight at first. and I was trying to put some golf balls I was going to use and they going to scuff up, so I haven't done it. Maybe you need some underwear from Noah. Yeah, I need some dirty balls.
00:07:04
Speaker
Don't put clean balls in the ball holder. You got to break it in with some dirty balls. But, uh, yeah, anyways, I, I met the dude and, uh, you know, just doing what I normally do and, um, started talking, ended up talking about knives and, um, and stuff like that. So anyways, I just hit him up and asked if he wanted to golf. And another thing kind of helped my, the, the, the whole mantra of like being even killed dude is really cool.
00:07:28
Speaker
Uh, you know, you take a chance when you golf with people that you don't really know. Um, But he he didn't have a great round, but he's very similar to like your attitude. He he was conscious of pace of play, didn't f freaking panic or break things when he was in bad shots, made it so much more enjoyable just to like, no matter what, just but just have a good time.
00:07:49
Speaker
um But yeah, it was pretty cool. I putted my fucking ass off. Nine one putts. That is nine in one day, nine, one putts. Yeah. That means I scrambled my ass off. I made a fucking 30 footer or a bunch of eight footer. So anyways, for all you people, it's like, that's the difference. Nine strokes difference between me shooting 88 and I don't know, 97, which is, which is a which was good. So anyways, um yeah, that's that.
00:08:18
Speaker
And then did a bunch of shit in the shop.

Workshop Challenges and Tool Adjustments

00:08:20
Speaker
My air blew out. yeah again What is wrong with it? Like, I don't understand when you say the air blew out, like what happened?
00:08:28
Speaker
So we have, when we ran it, you know what I think is, is that for whatever reason, the the compressor I was given was set to hold think it sits at like 140. It's awfully high. You know, you can turn that down.
00:08:45
Speaker
You I, yeah, I know you can, i don't know how to do them. And a compressor is kind of like an angle grinder to me. I i swear to God, I'm going to blow myself up. to fuck do it So I haven't done anything. And then plus, you know, it's been years, but you know, not knowing anything about tools in in general for most of my life.
00:09:03
Speaker
um I think what's happened is that being, less than conscious of of things like that. I think I've left it under such high pressure for so long that it's compromised the hose over time.
00:09:18
Speaker
So, yeah. And I just got to I got to replace it. I'm sure mine set at about a hundred. Yeah. Mine goes 140 and then it has like a 40-pound PSI swing. but Might even be 90. Yeah, i don't remember. But it's not set super high. I have to have a regulator on my sandblast thing.
00:09:38
Speaker
Really? Yeah, because that thing operates at like 40 or 50 or something like that. I can't remember the exact numbers, but i gotta it it definitely will... but It'd be a weapon shooting freaking medium out of that thing at 140 yeah. i don't put it I don't have a rag on mine.
00:09:56
Speaker
Yeah. It seems fine. Yeah, my but like again. One of the, right next to the tank, one of my air things is like a fucking cannon dude. I got to like hold on to it with two hands. Yeah, you need to turn that fucker down. Yeah, but, so yeah, anyways, ah and and then when I bought my rotary platen, I got an inch and a half tooling arm and I haven't converted it yet, so, but that one runs, it only fits in the ah and the grinder Jeff and I made, so.
00:10:28
Speaker
that's Why don't you just buy a two-inch arm? I'm going to. don't have it today or this weekend. Get on it. Come on.
00:10:40
Speaker
How was your weekend? What'd you do? it It was good. um I did a bunch of yard work on Saturday. Super exciting. um And then Sunday, CJ came over and we made, well, he put together sand sharks while I was um doing prep for etching all the knives that I did today.
00:11:02
Speaker
I did all my etching and coffee on three different knives today. Oh, nice. Yeah. So yeah, had him in the shop and yeah, it was good day.
00:11:13
Speaker
Wasn't super long, but yeah. Well, it's always a nice a nice time finishing knives because at that point I know I'm almost done. I would have actually, and I have some hot bluing to do. But because of the rain, i didn't want to, I have to do that outside and I didn't want to do today. So hopefully I'll get a break in the weather tomorrow and I'll be able to do it.
00:11:37
Speaker
Because I'm excited to get that buoy put together. Are we getting a break? What's that? Are we getting a break? It's supposed to rain tomorrow, but I'm like, I only need like an hour.
00:11:50
Speaker
So I should hopefully get a break of an hour at some point. It's pouring rain right now. I can hear it. Oh, Lord. I see a thunder, a lightning symbol on my... Speaking of weather, I have...

Fishing Trip Plans and Walmart Frustrations

00:12:07
Speaker
a uh fishing trip coming up this week oh um i leave thursday evening better take a rain jacket yeah it's uh up in in um just east of on the other side of yosemite on a 395 take a snow coat oh dude and it's gonna fucking rain and snow it it hasn't um From what I understand, it hasn't even been that kind of year.
00:12:34
Speaker
but you you want waders? I might.
00:12:40
Speaker
Seriously, do you have waders? This is like river fishing, right? No, it's like... It's a lake. we We'll either rent a boat or we do a lot of shore fishing on this one because it's cold.
00:12:53
Speaker
And we have a bunch of people, too. So we've had, you know, like six of us in ah in a round boat and it's a fucking clusterfuck. Somebody gets a fish and it's we get tangled and all that crap. But, man, I was going through all my ah my fishing gear and, man, it has been it's been far too long.
00:13:12
Speaker
I had some some questionably old shit in there. but what Some power bait that I have was like, ah I could use it as a weapon. It was like, I could kill the fish. it's just regular power bait, just a jar, but it was fucking rock hard. It was like stucco.
00:13:31
Speaker
So ended up going with Jared. who's He's fishing again now, too, but he does a lot of bass and striper fishing out over here in this area. And um we went to Walmart on Sunday.
00:13:45
Speaker
Bro, i was absolutely disgusted with the state of our local Walmart. And it's not like, i mean, Walmart's a joke full of, you know, interesting people watching and all that stuff, which is, you know, that's anywhere you go. Bro, the entire store is locked up behind glass.
00:14:08
Speaker
You can't get... Which one did you go to? The one in Antioch. Oh. You can not, I mean, I, I, I understand. Like I've, I've been there and there's been like some, you know, things of value, you know, like electronics have always been behind glass and things like that. Fucking everything.
00:14:25
Speaker
Like you can probably get some underwear. stolen out of there some socks or something like that but everything was behind like there's not enough workers to freaking open up the i got so irritated i ended up walking out i i couldn't even do it i remember like the last time i was trying to buy hair gel and it was behind this how long ago was it it was behind like a like a cow a cat locked cabinet like fucking hair gel Dude, everything.
00:14:56
Speaker
Like, I'm telling you, like, literally everything but the clothes. All the fishing gear, you know, like... Fishing gear? Everything, dude. Everything.
00:15:09
Speaker
I'm talking like the and about 80% of the store was behind there. And the fishing stuff's always in the back. um And just as I was walking through, I was like, this is crazy. Then I started over there in the fishing I'm like, I'm out of here. Jerry's like, we should have went to Sports and Warehouse. And I was like, yeah, let's go. I don't even want to give these people my money. Or should you Big Five or something? At least it's cheap.
00:15:30
Speaker
Yeah, but the Big pick Five sucks. So we went to Sportsman Warehouse and I'm so glad that I did because nothing was locked up. And I came across some thing next to the power bait called butt juice.
00:15:47
Speaker
Right next to the garlic scent, but it wasn't garlic scented butt juice. that Dude, I don't know what it was. I'll send you a picture of it, but it was literally some kind of liquid you put on your bait called butt juice. I was like, it just made my day. I don't know what, well, or the, you know.

Podcast Critique and Product Recommendations

00:16:11
Speaker
Okay. Hey, man, that's a little ah little insight into your world there, buddy.
00:16:18
Speaker
What of pheromones you drop in there, bud juice boy? ah Yeah, no, I was dying though. I was i was laughing pretty good. So anyway, it's got some some basic gear and and I'm ready to... Have you ever been to that section of Bass Pro?
00:16:35
Speaker
Like once I took up fly fishing and then I found that room, at least the one in Lathrop, You walk, there's a giant room that's just flies and you walk around with your yeah Dixie cup and you put your fly. I was like, there's never anybody in there.
00:16:53
Speaker
And it's like this whole giant room of like just flies and different fly fishing. tea It's really cool. I've never been fly fishing. I've never done that. Oh, well, get ready to fork out five to $700.
00:17:09
Speaker
it's an elitist sport for rich people. That's what I think. But it is fun. I do like it. Yeah, I've never done. I've always wanted to, but I haven't done it yet.
00:17:22
Speaker
But yeah, man, was just a... Yeah, it was sad. Overall, it was sad. Yeah. you You know who beef with? Fucking Apple Podcasts. I sent, because I sent, you didn't even notice. I sent out the the thing last week and it was, what was the name of the episode? Like, Hey Cabron or something? Yeah.
00:17:46
Speaker
Yeah. Apple Podcasts censored the title. I thought you did. I did not censor it. Apple censored it. Because I'm pretty sure on Spotify it's not censored.
00:17:59
Speaker
I'm going to double check right now. I haven't. Yeah. I thought you just did it. No, well that doesn't make any sense. Why would I put a C star, star, star, and exclamation? Like nobody would get that.
00:18:14
Speaker
No, no, I didn't. I didn't do that. No, it's not. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, it was Apple that did it. They thought cabron was, what what does it mean, asshole?
00:18:26
Speaker
Basically, yeah. That was too offensive for the title of the show. oh It's good thing you didn't say the other Mexican words you know.
00:18:36
Speaker
fuck What, jefe? oh Wow, so, so vast with your Spanish vocabulary.
00:18:47
Speaker
brarero
00:18:52
Speaker
And so, oh, I got to get this. Speaking of podcasts, I am going to bust the Hustle and Grind guys' balls right now. um They have a whole show. You didn't listen to it, but I have a whole show last week called Hot Takes.
00:19:08
Speaker
You can't have a fucking hot take if when you release the show, you bleep what your hot take is. oh
00:19:19
Speaker
It's not really a hot take if you don't have the balls to actually release it. It's kind of a lukewarm take at that point.
00:19:30
Speaker
And I know the guest that they have on this week is going to just bust their balls the entire show about bleeping their own show of their own hot take. It was Noah's hot take that he's too chicken shit to actually say on the air.
00:19:47
Speaker
Please tell me you have a bleep queued up. Oh, unfortunately don't. Oh God, that's such a missed opportunity. cause i was You guys need to beep, beep, beep, beep.
00:19:59
Speaker
Stop being such a pussy. um
00:20:03
Speaker
And it was, the thing is, if you're listening to it, The bleep is like four octaves louder than the show. So you fucking fall off your chair every time you hear the beep.
00:20:15
Speaker
It was... That's funny. And the the fucked up part is that I know what it was about, and I'm not sure it was worth bleeping. Right. that's what What's the big deal?
00:20:28
Speaker
it's It's not like it was like underwear with a flap in the front. i mean Yeah. I mean, I guess when you have more than seven listeners, you may have to prepare or be aware of things like that. But, you know, we don't ah we don't have that problem. So, no.
00:20:43
Speaker
And I just wouldn't give a shit. Yeah, you are kind of a badass, dude. fucking dentist You're fucking Dennis Terrell, bro.
00:20:54
Speaker
Damn right. for Anything that comes out of your face. don't fucking Don't put a fucking decorative pin in your knife for no reason. That's fucking stupid. Beep.
00:21:09
Speaker
Exactly. I'll tell you you're round the back of the handle. That's fucking stupid. Beep. you're and And we're the dumbasses that will beep it after we say it just like that. If you have a plunge line on your culinary life, you're a fucking re- Beep.
00:21:27
Speaker
Oh, shit.
00:21:31
Speaker
I don't ever want to hear yesterday yes i want to hear you say that. Brute to Forge is good. Beep. What was the other one we were talking about last week? Shit. forget what it was. I don't know. Beep.
00:21:47
Speaker
yeah
00:21:50
Speaker
And the funny is I totally support Noah on this one. And I've told a few people that I know that love this one that I don't like it. Dude, I'm telling you, I don't know what the big deal is. Like that is a definitely 1000%, not a hot take. It is a complete take it or leave it. Who gives a shit? Right. Like it does not. That's something that does not chat my eyes for sure.
00:22:15
Speaker
No. So you guys have to tune into the Hustle and Grind podcast to find out what what Noah's quote-unquote hot take. I'm going to call it a lukewarm take. and Tune into what it is and see if he'll actually admit it this week. You'll get the hot snakes when when you hear it. It's it's rip it's so controversial.
00:22:40
Speaker
I love those guys. Absolutely. That's good times. Good stuff. um what else you know you know You know what else we did this week? We booked all of our flights for Austria. So we are officially going...
00:22:55
Speaker
to Austria. Does Maritime Knife Supply offer flights too? Because they sure as fuck got everything else. They might as well just start being a travel agency too. Because if you're in the market for anything knife related, go check out Maritime Knife Supply. Lawrence Lake will hook you up. He's got what you need. If you can't find it, hit him up. He'll track it down for you. we got We're talking everything from steel to abrasives, handle material, tools, hammers, a number of our other sponsors,
00:23:24
Speaker
you can get their stuff there. Uh, whatever you need, uh, Lawrence is the man, go check him out and come in soon. very, very soon. a travel agency as well.
00:23:36
Speaker
peep
00:23:40
Speaker
That's good stuff. You know what else is, uh, I got the, I got a message from, my godmother and she, uh, every now and again, you'll get, questions about knife stuff from from people you know and i and i always get the uh the cringy like uh you know like what are they gonna ask me do i need to do something or you know and uh she's the basically the question was like i have this old cleaver that anyways they have a really cool house full of like a lot of antique stuff and um the the house used to actually be a uh
00:24:19
Speaker
an old general store, the, the, the front, like the living room. Um, it's in San Leandro somewhere, but anyways, it's so it's an older style house, but anyways, they kind of kept that vibe.
00:24:29
Speaker
Um, with the, with the old general store, the front of the house looks like that too, but they have uh, apparently they have a cleaver hanging on there and it's starting to, to rust. Um,
00:24:40
Speaker
like a lot. Oh, something. Carbon steel. It's carbon steel. Yeah. So, um, she's like, you know, and I'm like, what are gonna ask me like clean the thing up or, you know, and long story short, she was like, can we put something on it to like protect it? And, um, you know, kind of delay And I'm like, well, you know, carbon still is going to rust. That's, that's what it does over time. Um, so anyways, I sent them over to, uh, to Pelican paste, um, to, to coat that up and,
00:25:09
Speaker
give it a little rust resistance over the time. So if you're in the market for some premium wax, go check out ah Pelican Paste. Travis Haynes has hard wax, soft wax, Pelican Oil, Hand Solve, hand soap, and the cast iron pan seasoning butternut.
00:25:29
Speaker
ah You can use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off when you do that. And I did. I said, hey, not only do I have the perfect product for you to help you with what you need, i have a discount code for you.
00:25:41
Speaker
is you didn't offer to uh scotch bright the knife for them and take all the uh rust off come on no they didn't want to they wanted to preserve the uh the antique-ish look they just didn't want it to fully go to rust so i i did offer um but um yeah didn't ask you to sharpen it no it's literally just hangs on the door and the door over the door like it just hangs like over the door yeah so it's like if it's probably like like like a theft trap yeah so if it's sharp yeah we got a problem here um i had a friend reach out because another friend said hey you should talk dennis about sharpening your knives and she asked me about a bunch of knives and stuff and
00:26:26
Speaker
Then she started asking me about serrated knives. I'm like, no, I'm not sharpening serrated knives. That's, uh, that's, that's not a thing I'm going to do. Exactly. You.
00:26:38
Speaker
Um, but that brought up an interesting point.

Knife Sharpening Pricing and Techniques

00:26:41
Speaker
Like, what do you charge? Like, cause it was like, at that point it was going to be like a dozen knives. I'm like, okay, this is going to take me hours. I'm not doing this for free. Um, and like, what do you charge for sharpening?
00:26:53
Speaker
Um, which was an interesting thing. And then um it was almost the same day. Someone sent me a link. I guess there's these automated machines that some of the hardware stores have now. Have you seen these?
00:27:08
Speaker
i I wish I would have kept the name of it. But basically you put your you put your knife in there. Like one of the one of the the employees has to do it.
00:27:21
Speaker
And then a robot coffee, like a robot barista type thing. It's almost like the key cutting machine, right? Like it's, yeah it's like that. And, uh, I'm looking at the book cause he sent me a link to a post and a guy doing it. and And I'm like, Oh, right. It's like probably it's only two stones. So it's probably crappy, but whatever.
00:27:41
Speaker
And it's 699. And I'm reading all these comments of people that are disgusted that it's 699. I'm like, it's fucking 699 knife. it's fucking six ninety nine a knife That's no I'll charge more than that.
00:27:53
Speaker
Yeah, I would definitely charge her more than that. $10 is sweet spot. Yeah, like at least a buck or two an inch. i mean. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. whoa whoa
00:28:09
Speaker
Whoa. I need to get a kick out of that one. Jeez. Beep.
00:28:17
Speaker
I'm having too much fun with that. ah But, yeah, I'm curious. No, no, no, If you guys do sharpening services, what do you charge for that? I'm curious.
00:28:34
Speaker
Not that I plan on doing it because it's probably one of my least enjoyable tasks, but especially when I'm doing it for Jared. It's my favorite thing you do. For you, yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
00:28:47
Speaker
Yeah. You don't charge me a buck an inch. thanks Oh, believe me, you're going to get a couple inches from that.
00:28:56
Speaker
You just go sleep, Sonny. I know. It ain't going to be from you, that's for sure.
00:29:06
Speaker
Okay. But I did learn a new skill this week. You did. You did. Yes. You look surprised. No, I was like waiting for the.
00:29:19
Speaker
um So i've I really, I've been wanting to learn this for a while. And so I wanted to learn how to put checkering on a knife handle. If you're not familiar with what that means, it's not the little checkering file that everyone uses for jimping, which is like Noah's beep favorite thing.
00:29:38
Speaker
um How dare you is's break the sanctity of secrecy. Jeez. That's not the thing he was talking about. Beep. All right.
00:29:51
Speaker
I'm not, there'll be one more beep. That's it. I promise. um But I wanted to I wanted to do the cool checkering on the knife handle for like grip. They do these on, a gun gun stocks for grips and things. And it just, it looks really cool.
00:30:08
Speaker
So, and my Triple T video this week will be on this process. There's a special little file you get with a handle and a special little heads on those things.
00:30:20
Speaker
And it's very tedious. And you know how much I love little tedious things. And I'm not joking. I do actually love little tedious operations like that for some reason. It's a good thing to concentrate on. But it took a long time. And this is only like an inch by maybe two inches.
00:30:40
Speaker
On each side, like one by two inch rectangle on each side of the of the handle. That took me about four and a half hours. And... What I saw?
00:30:51
Speaker
No, that was sample. That was my test. When I actually did it on the knife, which you haven't seen, but um yeah, it took me at least... Yeah, I mean, this is only... I mean, I did one test piece and then this is really the first time I'd done it.
00:31:07
Speaker
It came out great. How much of that was like being afraid to to mess it up? No, I mean, I did most of my mess ups on the on the test piece.
00:31:19
Speaker
So you went in with some confidence and it really actually took you that long? Yeah, I don't think it's I think you would definitely get better at it over time, but I don't think it was like, you know, I don't think me.
00:31:32
Speaker
doing it 10 more times is going to look radically different. Put it that way. Gotcha. But the funny thing is, so into like probably hour number four, I've probably got a half an hour left.
00:31:49
Speaker
And I'm doing this and i'm thinking, man, I wish there should be an easier way to do this. And it occurs to me that I literally said this. I said, hey, dumbass, you have an $8,000 laser upstairs. I was just about to bust.
00:32:06
Speaker
I'm serious. Thank you for bringing it up so I don't have to do it. But I was like, that really sounds like something you could do. Yeah. With your laser that can magically put an image inside a fucking glass. Not only this, but this is, I'm showing you, I'm showing Jared the little test piece I did with the the relief. So you can, act this actually has the little relief diamonds.
00:32:27
Speaker
This took a minute and 40 seconds to do on the laser. And it took me a half an hour to set it up
00:32:38
Speaker
I mean, I don't i don't think it's gonna it's going to look different because the actual checkering with the file is cut, whereas this is burned with a laser. So I think it will look different.
00:32:50
Speaker
I'm not saying it's going to. What about like texture? it has the No, it's exactly the same because it's ah it's a relief map. So it's, um it has depth, right?
00:33:02
Speaker
But the thing is when you do it with the files, it's literally cut and you can buff it and it's shiny. Like all those little diamonds are shiny, whereas this will be slightly rough because it's done with the laser.
00:33:14
Speaker
But um yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gonna show both in the video. because I'll do a little test piece on a piece of wood in the video with the laser.
00:33:25
Speaker
But I don't know. If I was to do this again, I think I would use the laser. as As long as you weren't doing something round or curved, because then the depth, the focal length changes. So that would be very, very hard to do with the laser.
00:33:44
Speaker
But anything flat, for sure. but yeah But anyway, it was a cool little... um um Skill to learn. I'm happy I learned it. It's fun learning new things.
00:33:55
Speaker
So, yeah. Maybe our buddy Lawrence is going to carry checkering tools. He will. Yeah. But now he will.
00:34:06
Speaker
Yeah. It was cool. Awesome. Yeah. So... um You should probably try it on some GripTech because that'd be the only way that you can get...
00:34:18
Speaker
Grip tech, even more grippier is by checkering it up. That's right. Some extra stuff. So if you're in the market for some cool handle material, uh, go check out, um, grip tech composites, uh, IG that's grip tech official, uh, makers of grip X grip X 3d limitless. Um, I believe i didn't hear from him, but I think I just saw that the newsletter is back this week and uh,
00:34:47
Speaker
Not my favorite color, orange, like blaze orange is making its debut here for an extra 10% off that. You can use the discount code triple T 10 to double up that discount. But yeah, go ah get yourself some awesome handle material and save some money.
00:35:09
Speaker
Do it. Yeah. Blaze orange for Jared for, for Christmas. Yeah, as I say that, the A's are tied for first place in their division right now, which is absolutely amazing.
00:35:23
Speaker
Isn't it like the beginning of the season? Yeah, they started off 0-4, though. And now they're 500 and tied for first. So that's a big swing.
00:35:34
Speaker
Okay.
00:35:37
Speaker
Oh, um but yeah, this this buoy is a kumai. I've got a folder that's kumai that I'm just wrapping up. And then I've got four more folders that are all from the same um Copper Damascus bar.
00:35:54
Speaker
So, uh, and it it came out pretty cool. I think that you can still see the, uh, the ball bearing core. It's subtle, but I think it looks cool. I think you'll, uh, you'll appreciate it. But if you guys don't want to bother with all that mess of making it yourself, go to a Baker forge and tool, um, pick up some of their amazing steel, uh, and a plethora of other products, all the varieties of Gator piss, uh, Gator skin, uh, Grime Reaper to clean things up. So, uh,
00:36:24
Speaker
Clean it, etch it, protect it. Get yourself some of that cool steel and make it pretty. Use the discount code TTT10.
00:36:35
Speaker
So go get some. Yeah, they had a cool, ah I think they have a I'm almost there. I saw it. The notes are looking a little weird.
00:36:48
Speaker
Yeah, they got a brand new um pattern now Brand new cladding pattern. Go my, what is it called? Razor wire. Go my layout with a copper shim.
00:37:01
Speaker
um Looks really cool. That's the drop for this week. And I think they're doing a a drop starting tomorrow for some, I don't know if it's off cuts, but it's ah just some spare leftover patterns and stuff. They're going to do some discounts and have some more stuff available for you.
00:37:28
Speaker
hey Spring cleaning, he's calling it. That's what it is. Three patterns ready to move. Nice. Yeah. You're not going want to miss out on that. Make sure you go check out the, or use the app as well. And you get one day early access to the regular drops as well.
00:37:44
Speaker
i I was at Lowe's. had to pick something up. And I was in the, you know, metal by the piece section. Because I had to get some thin sheet metal for my last video. But they had some thin sheets and it was like punched.
00:38:04
Speaker
Like with different patterns. Like really fine patterns. And I thought, oh, that'd be really cool. I'm going use that as... um, a shim, kind of like what they're talking about, like use it as a shim and maybe copper. Cause it had like little like holes in like slots and holes and slots. And it was a cool, cool little pattern.
00:38:25
Speaker
And I thought, well, that'd be really cool to put some like copper on either side. And then, you know, I just thought it would look neat after you did the bevel and I was all excited and I get home and looking at it.
00:38:37
Speaker
I'm like, Hmm. It's pretty light. It's aluminum. Oh,
00:38:47
Speaker
Aluminum shin. That would have been a mess. Because I think aluminum, like, does it melt at, like, 1200 or something? Yeah. I mean, we've we've we've messed up your forge with with all kinds of stuff. Why not add that one to it?
00:39:06
Speaker
I was just pretty upset when I found out it was because it really felt to me, it really felt like this is so thin. it really felt like steel. And I thought it was on to something like, man, this stuff. So it was like, it was like 10 bucks or something, right? For this little 12 inch by 16 inch piece, which would have been great fur for, like, just cutting up little shims of Damascus, but.
00:39:27
Speaker
No. That's funny.
00:39:31
Speaker
Oh. That's a good time. Yeah. But tomorrow I will be treating. is my heat treat day because all of those folder blanks, the blade blanks got to get heat treated.
00:39:43
Speaker
And I'll be firing up that even heat to get those done.

Heat Treating and Shop Optimization

00:39:47
Speaker
um Definitely you need yourself a heat treating oven. Get yourself an even heat. Family owned and operated since 1948, just after World War II.
00:39:59
Speaker
Building the highest heat treat knife ovens available. So go get one. um I always say mysticism into science. That's what happens when you get an oven.
00:40:10
Speaker
Yep. Yeah, it's a good one. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, so lots of progress last week with those knives, more folders coming up. I'm trying to ramp up things for June.
00:40:28
Speaker
for june Progress. Progress. Progress. Thank you. Anyways, go ahead. Template.
00:40:41
Speaker
Template.
00:40:45
Speaker
a Oh, Lord.
00:40:49
Speaker
Whenever. When you say profile, do you say profile or do you say profile? I say profile. Oh, so what's the difference between progress? Is it?
00:41:01
Speaker
It's not progress, it's not an a That's that's how you say it. it's It's progress and it's template. No.
00:41:12
Speaker
It's a plate at the Plate, not a plut. You're a plut.
00:41:20
Speaker
I said only one more. is i was about to use it, but I'm not going to waste it yet. going to waste here it. That's good stuff. Yeah, I used the shit out of my Ameribraid this weekend, though. And I am just absolutely digging...
00:41:43
Speaker
and I just, I, I just dig it. If you're in the market for a new grinder, go check out Ameribraid. The Fastback two by 72 is an awesome machine. Um, absolutely kicking ass for me. Uh, that coupled up with the, uh, all the wonderful and awesome attachments that they have. Um, and the hyper disc, um, it has me, uh, motivated and ready to go.
00:42:07
Speaker
um I, I, And making a lot of fucking dust, a lot of metal dust. a And it's, ah it's cool. You know realized today is that, or this weekend was that ah if, cause I'm, I've been trying different grinding processes
00:42:33
Speaker
Good boy. Thank you. Anyways. Yeah. but Different processes. And, uh, you know, and I've always gone, uh, from, from using the rest to, my, my internal desire to, to freehand grind.
00:42:49
Speaker
Um, but I've been doing a little combination of both. And, uh, when I freehand grind,
00:43:01
Speaker
I tend to not stand over looking down over. I don't know. it's This is nothing I do consciously. But as I'm going, i ah you're going to see what I'm talking about. It's going to be hard for me to to explain it. But I find myself like away from the knife and off to the side.
00:43:19
Speaker
as um and And it's like I'll notice it Like at the very end of it, I'm like, it would probably be better if you were over here. But I don't know what it is. Like, I know when I was, you know, a little bigger, i had a i had a belly issue that was in the way. Now got a beard issue. And now I got a beard issue and ah and a and just, ah you know, I guess.
00:43:42
Speaker
Yeah, I used to, when I first started, I used to have that, like, stand to the side so I could see the platen. And I had even like, it's not even, I know what you're talking Cause I used to watch your videos where you would, you would literally be off the side and kind of dragging it away from you. But it's like, I'm half ass in front of it and over the top of it. But I just find myself. off over to the even at the side eyee Yeah. And.
00:44:06
Speaker
You've got to force yourself to to not do that. yeah it essence it's Unless it's working. i mean it does yeah because the the Normally when i when I'm freehanding, I'm kind of like truing things up and blending a little bit.
00:44:19
Speaker
um some like the heavy The heavy hogging the material off is I try to do on the rest. but yeah It was just an interesting thing because I've watched a lot of videos and I kind of don't see this half-assed. It's not like um'm but you're afraid, but it just I end up kind of away from it. And it can be problematic sometimes because you'll, uh, you'll ding the tip or pull away too hard or, you know, it's hard to judge your in and out, uh,
00:44:48
Speaker
Yeah. Digging the tip in and out. I know what you're talking about. Uh-huh. Buck an inch, buddy. But yeah. Anyways, four bucks.
00:45:01
Speaker
That's right. 10% off all accessories. Use the discount code triple T10. And ah for ah for the machines, you can use the discount code triple T. That's three T's.
00:45:15
Speaker
T-T and a T. Um, but yeah, go check out the boys out of Maribraid. Definitely. Yeah. I was using the hell out of mine. Um, yeah, it's such a great machine.
00:45:27
Speaker
Tracks like a dream, dude. Yeah. No issues at all. Did you get, when they sent yours, did they, did they send you the drop away platen? No, I have the, uh, I think it's the, think they call the combo. i don't know.
00:45:41
Speaker
It's got a big, the four inch. here the four inch on Yeah. Yeah. They sent me that one too. Um, the drop away platen, you gotta, you gotta upgrade to that one. Yeah. I don't i'm I'm digging what I got right now.
00:45:52
Speaker
I still need to. i just i I got to not golf one day and rearrange some shit in there because I'm still bumping around some.
00:46:03
Speaker
It gets tight in this little corner where I where i have everything. It's a giant ass. It's not giant, but you know. You should make that one table smaller. You don't need that much table room. No, it it had, in hindsight, 100%.
00:46:18
Speaker
Cause you got the big table close to the door and you got the other big table. though The wood table that we built into the wall needs to, to go away. But I had plans of having the mill and the lathe and you know, some other shit there. And it just, yeah, it's, it's a waste of space right now. It needs to get trimmed down just a little bit.
00:46:37
Speaker
Yeah. You got a lot of counter space that you don't need. lot of garbage collection.
00:46:46
Speaker
don't don't put horizontal flat spaces you can stack shit on dude absolutely the worst sounds so great i can do this i could now it's it's a mess yeah um what gonna say you know who's not a mess you know who's always in good shape i Tell me, Dennis. Our friend Frank at Two Bastards Texas Smithian Supplies. He is always sharp-dressed man at every show, and so are his hammers. So go check him out. You need a hammer for any occasion, go check out Two Bastards.
00:47:29
Speaker
Get yourself any of the peens, the straight, the curvy, the cross, the crisscross, crisscross applesauce, you name it. He's got all the peens.
00:47:42
Speaker
I'm trying to work in the double the double diagonal and you hit me with a crisscross applesauce. Yeah, for sharp dirt, he's got a lot of curves there, that Franken-peens.
00:47:55
Speaker
and Frank and Peens. Frank and Peens. That's right. That's right. Yeah. ah do You know what the boys at Hustle Grind always say? Oh, what do they say? think they say, say it's ah ain't it beep to have a beep beep in your beep?
00:48:17
Speaker
Bastards stealing our lines. Can't even come up with original material. Oh, man. Good stuff. ah Yeah, go get yourself a two bastards hammer.
00:48:27
Speaker
Absolutely. Can't go wrong with that. know And just to finish these off, I still have not put put in money these days put in my order um for bearings over at the Skiff Workshop. I got to do that. And then I'll probably post some of these knives up on the drop point.
00:48:53
Speaker
because ah it's just a great resource. You guys want to sell your knives to actual consumers, to buyers that are buying knives, get your knives up on the Drop Point. It's free newsletter, weekly, goes out every, I think it's Thursday, every Thursday.
00:49:12
Speaker
You can have announcements of drops that are upcoming. It's separated by um different types, whether they're folders, whether they're culinary. um He's got it really organized. So go check it out.
00:49:25
Speaker
the Go check out the draw point and get your knives up there. Nice. One day I hope to have an inventory to participate. But in the meantime.
00:49:36
Speaker
You've got to not be behind orders like a year. it's good it's good It's good being this guy, though. Yeah.
00:49:45
Speaker
Yep. All right. who do you got for our Maker Spotlight? um This one, actually, we've done this one before, but I'm going to do Will Brigham over at the Art of Fishery.
00:49:59
Speaker
ah because he just did he just released something I thought was really cool. um He actually put out um a feeler. He said, does anyone know where to get some muskox? This is like, I think, a month ago or something. And i I sent him a link and said, hey, I got some from this guy. And now he just released, I guess, the...
00:50:16
Speaker
the blade that he was working on and he's normally a culinary guy. So it was really cool to see some non-culinary stuff. Um, I mean, he, he does some non-culinary stuff on occasion, but it's good to see, uh, something, um, uh, come out of his. So he did this, uh,
00:50:34
Speaker
this dagger that has got a muskox handle and a muskox scabbard. And it just looks killer. And of course it's in like stainless Damascus, which is kind of one of his signatures, but it looks really, really slick.
00:50:50
Speaker
And we were just commenting in the in the comments about how bad muskox smells. um But yeah.
00:51:01
Speaker
So go check out um ah Will Brigham over at the Artificiary. He's got 31 and a half thousand followers and rightly so. Go check him out.
00:51:15
Speaker
You want to know something? What? Two things. what What is the name again? The Artificiary.
00:51:24
Speaker
I I'm looking at the way it's spelled and and it's not how I hear it. Artificery. Yeah. I hear artificery. oh it like it's Like a fish market. Artific. I don't know. it's It's art. A R A R T I F I C E R Y. Artificery.
00:51:48
Speaker
Yeah. I don't follow him. I'm going to. Yeah. Oh, yeah, he's he's got some some killer work on stainless, and I know he's yeah um he's worked with Josh Prince on some stuff on stainless, and he's helped a bunch of guys out just getting started in stainless Damascus.
00:52:13
Speaker
So he's done some cool stuff. Dude, Sylvester Stallone has one of his knives. I don't know how much cooler you could be with Rocky. Yeah. How's your knife? Everybody's going to say Rambo, but no, it's Rocky.
00:52:28
Speaker
Holy shit. I know his work. I've seen it at at the shows. I just didn't realize I was not following him. Yeah, no, it's beautiful stuff. Yeah.
00:52:41
Speaker
All right. Very cool. I don't know who I have.
00:52:48
Speaker
I don't know who you have either. I mean, I'm seeing it, but Carrie development. Yeah, carry underscore development. um Blades made in America, Oklahoma proud.
00:53:03
Speaker
Books are closed, so drops only. um I was just cruising through my feed and saw a drop coming out.
00:53:14
Speaker
I think it's it's in the second row the with the purple background. was just going to say the purple one looks awesome.
00:53:23
Speaker
I love it. I don't know. i I was not following this guy until this evening.

Maker Spotlight: Will Brigham (@artificiary)

00:53:31
Speaker
ah But some amazing EDC fixed blade stuff.
00:53:40
Speaker
Cool. Just so clean.
00:53:43
Speaker
tis so clean kind of on the heels of of my last week's spotlight as well. It's just like really digging this, these really clean, clean,
00:53:57
Speaker
grinds and I don't, I'm really digging this stuff. Um, actually thought it was somebody else, but I was pleasantly surprised that this was, uh, somebody that I wasn't following. So, uh, yeah, if you're not following him, he has 4,863 followers.
00:54:13
Speaker
Um, and just some really awesome stuff. I don't know his name, but, uh, I followed him and you should too. can go check out his stuff, grab a knife.
00:54:25
Speaker
I like his, you peck with the wrong pigeon. That's cute. I don't know if that's a cool word to use.
00:54:36
Speaker
What, pecked? Cute. You're a dude. Can we bleep that out, please? No. both Yeah. um So, carry underscore development.
00:54:54
Speaker
Oh, I see it. I did not know what the hell you were talking about, but it's on his. Yeah, it's his main image on Instagram. Yeah. That's really cool.
00:55:05
Speaker
Yeah. Good. That's a good one. I like it. yeah You're right. The purple one just jumped right out at me. Yeah, just fucking super clean. Cool grinds. I would have never thought to make a handle in that shape of the first two that kind of has that drop on the end.
00:55:21
Speaker
Yeah, that's a mega beak. Mega beak. Yeah. yeah mega bird's beak uh yeah that's cool yeah he's got some the yeah my my hot take is how much i love uh i can't even say it it's not even right anyways segmented scales really cool that that whole theme that he's got going on there yeah he did a good choice but then like the gray the purple the I'll give you a hot take right now. I don't like segmented scales where people pick like fucking totally...
00:55:57
Speaker
Like if you're going to pick like a dark wood and then a different color wood and then a different color wood and put them all together in a segmented scale. like Ladies and gentlemen, this is how you baked Dennis Terrell into talking shit. I just set you up like. You probably did. oh my God. That drives me nuts. Like those three different colors don't go together. You better blend something in the middle. He did an amazing job of blending that purple into the colors on either side.
00:56:27
Speaker
Looks good. I agree. He's got some stylistic know-how. That's right. Yeah. Dennis approved. It's not stupid.
00:56:38
Speaker
It's not stupid. That's just dumb. We're going to put that on a sticker. It's not stupid. That's not stupid. You win today.
00:56:52
Speaker
Oh, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you're going fishing next, no, this coming weekend. I leave Thursday night. I'm driving up to to, so you got to get to where I'm got. I got to go. got to go clear up to Reno and back down. so I got to go three and a half hours to Reno and then three and a half hours back down 395 because, highway four and one 20 are close every year. oh right now it is just a fucking giant pain in the ass. So,
00:57:26
Speaker
There's no quicker way to do it. So I have some buddies in in Reno. um I go check them out when I go see Rick too as well. um So depending on what time I get out of there, I may go swing by and give a old Rick a belly bump or something.
00:57:47
Speaker
I sent him a pretty funny birthday gift last week. Oh, nice. I missed that. didn't know it was birthday. Happy birthday, Rick. Uh, was it like last Monday?
00:57:58
Speaker
I'm a horrible friend. I laugh at him when he breaks his knee and tries to catch a saw. Don't even wish him a happy birthday. I only knew cause of faith. I happen to be on Facebook and i Facebook told me, Oh, you have a nice guy. I said, I may, I may, I may try to swing that. Yeah. But I got to go do that. but I leave Thursday, um, afternoon ish to go do that.

It's like a seven hour drive. It will be. You better catch some fish, man. Six hours. Yeah, i don't i don't know. The weather's not going to help either. But it it doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter. Like, this trip is...
00:58:34
Speaker
we've been iced out with weather a handful of times, but it is just, it it's going to, it's so needed just to go be out in God's country, hanging out with some buddies, not doing anything, having fuck all to do, no golf, no nothing, just, just chilling having a good time eating.
00:58:54
Speaker
um Whether we fish or not, I mean, catching fish is always great too, but um I'm just really looking forward to it. It's always April. Always April. Yeah. Last this end of April is always opener for trout.
00:59:11
Speaker
It's trout. Yeah. Yeah. They close it sometime in October through the winter and then they open it back up here in April, end of April. Is that everywhere around here?
00:59:21
Speaker
I don't know. It is up there in that Walker River. I looked at the rules like every friggin' river is different here in California for trout. Yeah. But it could just be because, you know, weather too.
00:59:35
Speaker
It's people dying and ice fishing and avalanches. Yeah. So, yeah, I'm doing that. And then I'm there.
00:59:46
Speaker
Come home Monday. I'm surprised I'm not making a bird and trout knife. I already did. I made, that was one of the first knives I ever made. I made it for, for that whole crew there.
00:59:56
Speaker
oh I don't recall. Yeah. It didn't look like a bird or a trout. You probably were like, uh, that's stupid. Yeah. No, what did you tell me? Oh my God. I can't remember. i
01:00:12
Speaker
I don't know. I think it's the first time you said form over function or function over form. or It was something you you critiqued the the design that I had. And I was just like, this guy's a real dick.
01:00:26
Speaker
did not.
01:00:29
Speaker
I don't remember what you said. I can't. It was something along the lines of that.
01:00:35
Speaker
But yeah, I've already done that. And they all have them. Yep. It's the last Echo Baits ever made. so
01:00:45
Speaker
well I'm hoping to get maybe eight more knives done before blade shell. Depends on how many folders I'm going to do. Yeah, I'm not going to finish these, but I've made some pretty damn good progress here. So I'm pretty pleased with myself and what's happening. They're entirely new knives that...
01:01:05
Speaker
the The old ones that have been sitting there for a while that aren't getting done, but this was fun to get me a get me motivated back into doing some stuff. so Were these for that trip or are these?
01:01:20
Speaker
Those were, yeah. um So I'll take them as they are, bring some handle material and probably use them. I'll probably sharpen them because they're they' all pretty much ground and mess around with them.
01:01:35
Speaker
and all right so come back and get handles on and stuff are you this not a camping trip you're staying in like a no no we rent a house okay yeah a big like four bedroom to fucking cold and colton be camping yeah fuck that i've i have camped there that's the coldest weather i've ever it was 23 degrees and i slept in the town oh hell no and yeah that that's not for me Not for me. Not for me. Not one single bit. I think my hand fell out of my sleeping bag while I was sleeping and I woke up and yeah I had a stranger going on. like A natural unintentional stranger.
01:02:15
Speaker
i was reaching for my grip X. I was like, what's going on? Yeah. That was not fun. That doesn't sound fun at all. Never do that again. That that is not for me.
01:02:30
Speaker
tell you what. I i tell you what.
01:02:36
Speaker
All right. We got to get out of here. Yeah, I think it's time. Yeah. All righty. We will see you guys next time.
01:03:00
Speaker
And that's bleep.
