Introduction and Overview

afcbournement
Hi everyone, welcome back to your daily AFC Bournemouth Podcast with me, one of your hosts, Luke Burrows. And we are continuing, we are continuing with the theme of ancient International Break, as is International Break the last day of International Break. And this time next week, the Premier League shall be back, which I think we all looking forward to. But in this episode of this show, I will be reviewing the international break. I realize that as it's just me flying solo this week on the form of podcast, no Vic, no Dom.

Recap of England vs Finland Match

00:00:46
afcbournement
No episode went out, like I said, around the game in the week when England lost to Greece. So we we will be covering that
00:00:57
afcbournement
episode as well as all things today's game as well which finished in a free one what were like 10 minutes ago finished a free one England win and then what next for England and then the final thoughts on ancestral break and looking ahead to the return of the Premier League so let's dive into it. I want to start with today's game because it's fresh it's much more fresher in the memory, 3-1 win for England against Finland. You would expect England to dominate the game, 70% possession, more shots although shots, total shots, quite close, 15 to 13. But yeah, you expect England to to dominate the game.
00:01:46
afcbournement
I think one of the surprising things, if we start from the beginning, was seeing lineup, seeing trends play at left-back.

Discussion on Lineup Changes

00:01:53
afcbournement
It was a bit surprising. Angel Gomez came into midfield and there was no space for Phil Foden either, so some sensual
00:02:08
afcbournement
kind of the talking points there. I know obviously Dean Henderson came in, in going as well. Good to see an ever goalkeeper in the back of the net, so to speak, because Jordan Pittford usually starts every single match, even these types of games where and I think in the nation's league, you know, they do yeah kind of mean something in terms of standings. They're better than international funding needs. I've spoke about that recently covering international break. But you know, they're not the,
00:02:38
afcbournement
that hold the same importance as the main competitions, the World Cup and the Euros. you know So some you know some some important games get to you know to get the rankings up, to gel the team, team cohesion, et cetera.
00:02:55
afcbournement
yeah Point being, good to good to see a never-go keeper starting in the back of the net for England. In terms of the game itself, you know England went in half-time, 1-0 up, a little bit disappointing, but the goal was a very very good goal. and go and go goodmez um was in involved in the goal very good build up through to Jack Grealish that finished it off that's I think this is at two and four got to two and four for him in England in the recent couple of international breaks so he is contributing in terms of
00:03:29
afcbournement
you know in in terms of goals and assists although you you know some sectors want more end product from him I think personally he retains the ball quite well gets a lot of fouls right you know but protects the ball quite well he's not gonna be a Anthony Foden type player, you know. and and so Sorry, Anthony Gordon type player. Did I say Anthony Foden? One of those days. Anthony Gordon, Anthony Gordon, Anthony Gordon type player, where he's got the pace to just run past people constantly, you know, he just protect the ball very, very well, retain the ball well, and you know, has
00:04:09
afcbournement
you know, come back into being even set up after being f left out. The Euros contributed to the team and scored today. And I personally thought it was a goal. And then from there, you want England to go and and but build on that because, know, for them to get, so it's something like for them to automatically kind of go up to the next group in the nation's league, they need to win all of their games and kind of win them convincing convincingly. That's kind of how I understand it. So, you know, that was at the 18th minute, Jack Greenish's goal, you can't you know you you want them to build on that from there.

Key Match Highlights

00:04:50
afcbournement
And it wasn't until the 74th minute, a very, very good free kick from Trent, where
00:04:56
afcbournement
you they They built on on that 1-0 lead. Yeah, as I alluded to there, I thought it was a good free kick. The goalkeeper did get a little bit of a hand glove, whatever you want to call it, on on the board. And I always feel like once a goalkeeper, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but gets a touch on the ball you just think could they keep it out like could they just yeah just you know because they're so close you know it it's is it's one of those situations that oftentimes in life as well right that when we were so too close to something like touching the ball it just got extra a little bit more annoying well especially from a Finland perspective from an England perspective obviously very happy and happy for Trent that that goes into the top corner very very good strike I think he had one
00:05:45
afcbournement
beforehand there was one also in the first game that he didn't take a free kick and I think it was Palmer who took it but it went way over the bar but you know you won't Trent over free kicks in in my opinion, although, you know, players like Palmer and maybe even Harry Kane are going to sometimes have a say in the matter, but it's good we have these good strikers of the ball from an England perspective. so
00:06:13
afcbournement
That was 2-1 and then obviously we continued to retain possession. You know, there was moments of panic, I think, actually, as well. You know, where Finland had some chances, as I alluded to beforehand, and total shots was actually quite close. There was one chance just after halftime, I think it was probably around the
00:06:36
afcbournement
50th minute maybe it eludes me right now but there was a chance where one of the Finland players like missed an absolute sitter right they got through they broke England's kind of you know they got through England's defense and they missed a sitter so there was chances for for Finland and I think that's
00:07:01
afcbournement
potentially worrying, potentially you can concerning. Although I feel like a lot of fans think that these games are always going to be like really, really, really, really, really easy. And oftentimes they're not. Now, does that is that because England make it harder than they need it to be? Or is that because it's professional football app?
00:07:22
afcbournement
You know high level it's not a kick in the park so.

Analysis of England's Performance

00:07:27
afcbournement
I don't know you know i'm just kind of posing that question poo posing those thoughts that but. Yes, 74 minute transport a very, very good for kick there was, as I said, the throughout the.
00:07:43
afcbournement
the game where some concerning moments where Finland broke England down and got through and had chances. That can rise, then scored at 84th minute. Good run, you know just kept running, kept running, kept running. yeah Cross comes in and he's there to tap it in. and Also a couple of good international breaks, very good performance in this game I felt. 2-4 for him as well in an English shirt.
00:08:08
afcbournement
And then you're like, okay, you know, kind of, you know, just like, you know, free no win, all good clean sheet. And then boom, you know, like, three minutes later. And who was it? It was Ollie Watkins. Ollie Watkins was the
00:08:27
afcbournement
man at the front post when a corner comes in and doesn't deal with it. And you will think the front man deal with it. Deal with it, deal with it, deal with it, doesn't deal with it. What happens? I'm not going to even try and pronounce his name. Artie Hoss, because of Sen. I can't talk. Anyway, I can't pronounce any names. I'm really, really bad at names. But he scores a very good header.
00:08:55
afcbournement
and From an England perspective, it should not happen. I don't think concentration levels dipped. As I said there, Watkins was the man at the front post. Come on, it's for Harry Kane. And yeah, just concentration eluded him in that split moment, and clean sheet is gone, and that's also disappointing. so Where does this leave England? We will talk about that in one of the we were in the final segment of today's podcast. But that was the game today. That was the game today. You know, Freina would have been a very good result.
00:09:33
afcbournement
were would have free nails you know kind of signaled it was easier than what it was potentially well I think maybe 2-0 where would have 2-1 maybe 2-1 because the Finland did have some chances but probably 2-0 actually although that sitter that one of the Finland strikers had sits in my mind but and free nail maybe a little bit more comfortable than what it was and but free one that was the the final result on match day four of six of England's nations league games so we will look back at the other game in the week in just a moment as that was very very disappointing especially because it was Wembley we'll look at that in just a moment but before we do so we will take a quick break and we'll be right back

Okay, so first segment focused on the game today on October the 13th. Obviously this is, you're probably listening to this on October the

England's Strategy against Greece

00:11:44
afcbournement
14th. This is when it comes out or, you know, whenever you are listening to it. So let's go back to match day three. Very, very disappointing. England started with no striker, even though they had Olly Watkins available. That was questioned by a lot of people, although listening to what Lee Carsey said about sometimes you need to try something different.
00:12:06
afcbournement
Yeah, I kind of like that, but it didn't work. And I think once it doesn't work, are you really, it's like how quickly can you, it's a fine balance, right? Again, in in and life sometimes as well, whereby try something and maybe you get a sense that it's not working. It's a fine balance between like, how long do you leave it compared to changing it? And I think that that's also one of the criticisms that potentially i have if you are going to try something different like i think it was quite evident that you get to have time and playing with a false nine
00:12:49
afcbournement
didn't work. So do you change it then? You know, do you wait, you know, kind of, kind of thing. sort of its But, you know, I think Greece done what they needed to do, sat in quite well. Again, I didn't see the whole game from like start to finish completely. So forgive me if I'm kind of missing bits, but from what I've seen Greece had a couple of, well, there was one fairly early chance I've seen where Greece kind of retained the ball.
00:13:18
afcbournement
or got the ball back off England. I think it was the goalscorer Pavidis and it just kind of went past the left hand post, he tried to curl it and little a warning sign, you know, then obviously England retains the ball, have has the possession as they do. In this game it was 64 to 36 possession. So again, ill a lot of the ball. There's also the goal and clearance from Colwill as well, so another warning sign, you know.
00:13:48
afcbournement
but you know in England continue to uh to trampley and try and break grace down you get to half time you know nil then the question comes in do you change it because you know it's not really working the false nine so there's like that question in in mind and i would have probably
00:14:15
afcbournement
done something then forgive me if I'm wrong but the thing the first change was the 51st minute where Saka went off, Ollie Watkins finally came on in the 60th minute and then I think Slanky came on obviously ex-Bormuth at the 72nd minute so he probably weighed in yeah I would have made the change at halftime personally yeah I don't think it was working and it was kind of a little bit evident to see it wasn't working So, you know, bring only what comes on, bring Dom on then, you know, one of them then, and play with a more recognized striker. That's what I would have done in this game. And then it's, I feel like, again, i so I actually missed the two late goals, but I feel
00:15:03
afcbournement
when I checked the result and and it was 2-1. So I turned it off and it was 1-0. No, 1-0 grease. And then when I seen it was 2-1. Oh, you know, and I turned it off quite late. I think it was like the 85th minute. Obviously two minutes later, you'd be Jude Bellingham scores, right? The 87 minute. And personally, I think then, you know,
00:15:25
afcbournement
hold on for a draw, push to get a win, don't concede the 94th minute, that's just very disappointing, is one phrase to kind of describe that. So yeah, you know, overall the disappointing result, was news beforehand I would see about
00:15:47
afcbournement
George Baldock and very, very sad news. In fact, fact, like I couldn't believe it. And so from Greece's perspective, that was a tribute to him, I feel. They played a very good performance, done what they needed to do, defended defended really well from what I've seen in the game. And
00:16:11
afcbournement
counter-attack, attacked when they needed to. You know, England did catch them offside like six times as well. So what does that tell you? You know, they are trying to, I think, play counter-attack, England play the high line and a few times they did get through. So, and won the game. So credit to, credit to Greece and in the next,
00:16:37
afcbournement
segment to wrap this episode up we're going to talk about where this leads things in terms of all things nations leak
00:16:54

00:17:32
afcbournement
Okay, so let's bring this episode home a wrap up of international break the second international break of the season and then we can get back to all things Premier League. So where does the you know these two last results from an England perspective leave England at least them going into the next international break. needing to win and win comfortably in.
00:17:59
afcbournement
Athens basically because England now sit second in the table paid for 1-3 lost 1 they're currently level on points with Greece you probably expect Greece to get a result tonight against against Ireland even a point we would keep them top even if even even as it is would probably create keep Greece top because of goal difference.

England's Standings and Future Plans

00:18:29
afcbournement
So very difficult for England to think to to finish first. I think they would need to get a result and really improve that goal difference to to finish top of the group. And you know you go you went into these international breaks and you're thinking you know England are going to finish top of the group and for them not to finish potentially top of the group, it's very disappointing. Greece was clearly the
00:18:51
afcbournement
most potentially difficult team that England would say would face in this group, although you think maybe you think some kind of rivalry with Ireland, you know, being close neighbours and stuff, potentially something that maybe, but
00:19:07
afcbournement
first game, you know, England obviously won that 2-0, and the next lecture will be played in the next international break coming up in November. So yeah, I don't know. Difficult one to judge, but I think overall, you know, you would expect England to have won the second group in league B, and it's going to be a very difficult tour order for them.
00:19:34
afcbournement
for them now, is very disappointing. And then you've got the whole kind of question of after the next in international break, and actually five and six so of this Nations League campaign, who's going to take the team forward? Personally, i I don't think Lee Carsley wants the job. you I think he wants to go back to the end of 21s, and that's not even based on everyone kind of hooking on the comment he made in midweek about it, hopefully.
00:19:58
afcbournement
i Even before that, in some of the earlier press conferences he'd done in the first international break, I got the sense that an agreement was reached with the F.A. that he would step up for the Nations League campaign until they were to allow them to take their time to go through a proper search of the best person to take the England international team forward. and know that's I believe that to be the case, so I don't think he constantly wants it, I might be wrong, I probably am wrong, but that's just the vibe

Audience Engagement and Interaction

00:20:33
afcbournement
I get. I'd be interested to hear, you know, you guys, the the audiences have used Fort Riches at AFC Bournemouth
00:20:43
afcbournement
at GSPN, Bournemouth, sorry, on socials. And it'd be good to kind of get your thoughts there, but that's just what I think, really. I think he doesn't really want the job and is doing the FA a favour and wants to get back to the end of 21s and who can blame him because taking the english manager job, especially when I don't think he's been coaching I mean, how long has he been in coaching for? Obviously he's done well with with the under 21. So he's been with the under 21. Okay. So since 2021, three years or so before that, a couple of caretaker roles, England and under 20. So, you know, a few years in coaching, but you know to go into the England, you know, like the big England job, I think right now,
00:21:38
afcbournement
you know, age 50, still quite young in terms of of ah ah managers. Yeah. I don't think he wants it. So, so that's that really, but that's international
