Introduction and Welcome

00:00:09
afcbournement
Hi everyone. Welcome back to your daily GSPN AFC Bournemouth podcast with me, one of your hosts, Luke Burrows. And today I'm joined by Dom. Dom, how are you doing?
00:00:19
Dom
Yeah, all good. Thank you, Luke. Busy, busy, busy, but looking forward to the football to come back. to boness It's been very quiet this past week or so.
00:00:29
afcbournement
Yeah, I mean in that international break, I did a couple of episodes to like fill the space, right? And and stuff. But yeah, it's good to have Premier League back. and And a tough game actually against, well, a tough game for the Cherries against Arsenal.

Upcoming Match Against Arsenal

00:00:43
Dom
Yeah, I mean, we were talking just before we went live. The the record's not great. I'd say confidence isn't at an all time high, but stranger things have happened.
00:00:54
afcbournement
Yeah, I mean, I did a a first day crossover with the Arsenal lads. And I think I got like Vic's optimism buzz because when I'm in school prediction, I was like, well, I can't see Bournemouth winning. So with my optimistic Bournemouth on, the best, I think, to hopeful is like a draw. So I went 2-2, which is, I don't know if you feel like that that's very, very optimistic or what. Because yeah, I really see Bournemouth winning. And so I think the best is is a draw, right?

Past Performances and Challenges

00:01:22
Dom
Yeah, I mean, I think the last time we beat Arsenal was years ago, wasn't it? It was when, I think Jordan Ives scored. I could be wrong, but I mean that that would have been upwards of at least five years ago. And obviously they're a lot better now than they were back then. So, yeah, not as I said, not particularly optimistic.
00:01:45
afcbournement
Now are you going to the game?
00:01:46
Dom
I will be there. and Uman and Ahrid about the fact that I don't like the late kickoffs because it takes me ages to get home and it is on the telly but I have to go, don't I really? I have to go.
00:02:00
afcbournement
definitely season ticket holder and all that.
00:02:01
Dom
you
00:02:03
afcbournement
yeah. So I think, like yeah, the last draw was, so I've just got like brought some head, like, well, head, head record, basically. So it says draw against Arsenal, December, 2019, one, one that was set.
00:02:16
afcbournement
So it says in the premier league. And then last time, Bournemouth beat Arsenal, it's got 14th of Jan, 2018.
00:02:24
Dom
Sounds about right, yeah.
00:02:25
afcbournement
to one, Carlin Wilson, Jordan Ibs was on the score, on the score. She Hector Bellerin for Arsenal.
00:02:35
Dom
Yeah, that's that's buried very deeply in my brain because I was just starting out at uni then, so I had a lot on my plate, but i wrote I went to that game. That was back when Arsenal came to town, you think, we could probably beat these.
00:02:50
afcbournement
Hmm.
00:02:50
Dom
And yeah, times have changed very quickly.
00:02:54
afcbournement
Yes, so Bournemouth were actually 1-0 down, Hector Bellerin scored in that game, 52nd minute and then 2 goals, 70th 74th and you won

Struggles and Hopes Against Arsenal

00:03:07
afcbournement
the game.
00:03:08
afcbournement
win the game
00:03:08
Dom
yeah
00:03:09
afcbournement
so
00:03:09
Dom
yeah
00:03:12
afcbournement
There is hope, I think.
00:03:13
Dom
slightly
00:03:14
afcbournement
Maybe. Slightly, yeah. Are there any, so from like, yeah, looking at the other, like looking going through the head-to-head records, apart from that, then we've got to go back to Jan 2017, free-free draw.
00:03:29
afcbournement
What I would say is every time you've, Bournemouth have got a result against them, Bournemouth have been at home.
00:03:29
Dom
yeah yeah yeah i mean the the three-wheel draw is a sour one because that was also the one where we went through nil up and then threw it away it was the it was the jiru jiru equalizer uh we just capitulated that game that was classic
00:03:45
afcbournement
He did, yeah, I'm just looking now.
00:03:57
Dom
classic Bournemouth of yes, the year where we just couldn't defend at all. I mean, some may argue that we're not particularly great at defending now, but we were considerably worse back then.

Need for an Effective Striker

00:04:08
Dom
Yeah, that was a tough one to swallow. I can't remember who scored first. I never run a phrase that's scored one, but I can't remember who scored the others.
00:04:15
afcbournement
So we've got Charlie Daniels, Callum Wilson-Penalty, and Ryan Fraser.
00:04:17
Dom
Yeah.
00:04:22
Dom
Yeah.
00:04:24
afcbournement
I'm here for Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez, Lucas Perez in 90th minute. Giroux.
00:04:31
Dom
yeah and he did that stupid scorpion kick celebration which yeah it was a it was a tough time that it was because that was the season where we ended up finishing ninth but that result was would have been really good solid almost an embarrassment towards Arsenal and then they managed to core it back and say it wasn't the finest it wasn't the finest hour we should say or the finest however many minutes it was 20-25 minutes
00:04:35
afcbournement
I think I got vaguely remember.
00:05:02
Dom
But I'll take a thrill tomorrow.
00:05:06
afcbournement
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, because you are at home and know obviously that these free results when Bournemouth have got a result, does that, like if you were, if Bournemouth were to get a result, would it be Bournemouth at home?
00:05:21
Dom
second Yeah, I think so. i mean If you look at like the past couple of games at the Emirates, we've actually done alright. We had the season where Philip Billings scored after all of 20 seconds and then obviously that was then met with the Rhys Nelson 95th 6 minute winner, was a real kick in the gut. It just seems to be at home i'm relatively confident against anyone who we play but i always used to say it was city who i never went in with any hope against and now arsenal basically morphed into like city 2.0 haven't they so it's always yeah the attitude has definitely changed around that it's that same sort of mentality i have like i said going into the city games where you don't really expect anything and then evening school girl was a bit of a bonus to be honest
00:06:12
afcbournement
I think from my side, and from my perspective, it kind of makes it a little bit, I don't know, more challenging, but like for two main reasons, right? The the next three games, Arsenal, Villa away, Man City at home, plus the disappointing result against Leicester before international break. It's like, where are the points coming from?
00:06:30
Dom
Yeah and like Lester realistically I mean in the podcast before that game with Vic I was outlandishly confident and I said that we would beat them quite easily and it all seems to boil down. I'm sure we'll touch on it and a little bit later, but we make the chances at the moment, but we're not putting them away. And that's the scariest thing to think about, especially now when you look at Solanke, he's obviously found his form at Tottenham, scoring goals, playing really well. And it does make you think a bit like, well, we could really do with a striker like Solanke right now. So just got to make sure we can actually find the back of the net of all the chances we're making at the moment.

Zencastr Promotion

00:07:10
afcbournement
Yeah, did you go to that game or watch the highlights catch you afterwards?
00:07:14
Dom
Yeah, I i went. um It was quite... I wouldn't... Embarrassing is not the right word. It was classic archetypal us in terms of dominating the game. If you watched Match of the Day and you listened to what Gang of the Day said afterwards.
00:07:34
Dom
And essentially what he said in his podcast setting as well, Shira and Mark and Rich is that we battered them the entire game and we just couldn't find the back of the net. And then at one time we do obviously get disallowed again. I think that's what, like 11 points VR has taken off of us or something around that sort of mark. It's a lot. But yeah, it's if we play like how we did against Leicester tomorrow, then we don't stand a chance.
00:07:57
afcbournement
Interesting. Okay. Let's continue talking the game tomorrow, but I want to take a quick break and then come back and any standout moments from your side, obviously, because you are a seasoned decoder, you've been to the games, I think,
00:08:16
afcbournement
We might have touched on some of them, obviously the last minute winner and a few others, us but we'll kind of discuss that, discuss that a bit and yeah, continue building up to the game. But we'll take a quick break and then be right back.

00:09:28
afcbournement
Okay. Dumb. So minus like the, some of the moments we've already spoken about ju last minute, et cetera, recent Nelson last minute. I think that then meant asked to one free to from a Bournemouth side, are there any standout moments when you've been to games against the gunners that stand out to you or any, yeah. and Any standout moments from, from any part of any game you've been to where Bournemouth have met the gunners homeware away.
00:10:00
Dom
The first season in the Premier League when we played Arsenal at home, I remember just being taken aback as to how good Mesut Ozil was. like that's one thing that will never leave me because obviously you go into the Premier League and you're obviously you want your team to do well but you're also excited to see all these top level players there and you watch Mesut Ozil play and he was just another level like easily one of the best footballs I've ever seen live he was just on another planet and I think he's one of those players who doesn't get the recognition he deserves he was amazing and then
00:10:38
Dom
On the flip side of that, you also have what we've got from Arsenal, and when we had Jack Wilshire on loan, that second season in the Premier League, and when he couldn't play against Arsenal, obviously, you realise how good he was as well.
00:10:46
afcbournement
Mmm
00:10:52
Dom
ah ah I always associate Arsenal with those two characters in particular. And I also associate with how quiet and barren the atmosphere was at the Emirates the first time I went as well. It was like, like it genuinely was going to a library.
00:11:04
Dom
I know it sounds very cliche, but I'll just never forget how awful that atmosphere was. And then you you look at the noun and tell it, and obviously they're they're a lot better. In terms of like Bournemouth points of views and highlights.
00:11:18
Dom
I suppose the main one that does that that that does stand out is just how well we played against them when we drew through all of them at the beginning and obviously Jordan Ives scoring one of his very few goals for us against the Arsenal.
00:11:26
afcbournement
Hmm.
00:11:32
Dom
Sonesi made his debut against Arsenal as well and he got annihilated by Gabriel Jesus but he's obviously been considerably better since then. but Unfortunately, most of the memories that I think of are negative, to be honest with you, Luke. There aren't really many positive ones. It's a poor problem.
00:11:49
afcbournement
Yeah, so that game you mentioned where with Ozos, so that was 2015.
00:11:56
Dom
Yeah, it would have been then, yeah.
00:11:59
afcbournement
Yeah, and that game, sorry to say, it was a 2-0 defeat, I believe with my...
00:12:05
Dom
Yeah.
00:12:06
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:12:07
Dom
I believe you're right, he he scored. He celebrated right in front of me. he obviously didn't He obviously didn't pick me out and came for me, but he he celebrated in front of me. And it was one of those games, because in that first season, you really, really realise the difference in quality from the championship to the Premier League.
00:12:28
Dom
and was definitely in the top three standout performers I saw that season just a different level him David Silva and of a niche one Gianelli and Bula who played for Stoke I'll never forget how good he was I think that was like the only good game he ever had for Stoke so if a random Stoke fan ends up listening to this podcast they might remember him
00:12:40
afcbournement
oh
00:12:50
afcbournement
No, ah ah yeah i do I do remember. I think he was like linked with like bigger clubs at one point.
00:12:54
Dom
He was, yeah, he was linked with like, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he was linked with Liverpool. And then he, yeah, he ended up at Stoke. I don't know where he plays now or if he plays at all, because I mean, this was about 10 years ago. But yeah, proper player. But yeah, going back to Arsenal, no positive memories apart from the ones we touched on earlier on, I'm afraid.
00:13:16
afcbournement
Interesting. What was it about Ozil that stood out to you?
00:13:20
Dom
How much time do you have? just I think the main thing, and you always say it about those players, like shavage andesttas you biscuit your your you're you're jabby along those all those midfielders who just seem like they have an extra four or five seconds on the ball, just to they're always through yeah three or four steps ahead.
00:13:40
afcbournement
Mm.
00:13:43
Dom
And I don't think he really gets the respect he deserves because he didn't play in the Arsenal teams, like the the golden era of Arsenal teams, you'd say.
00:13:53
Dom
i mean Could you imagine him in this team that they've got right now? they He would be licking his chops because he was playing with I mean, for their standards, players who should have been nowhere near that Arsenal squad. But yeah, he was just fantastic. the The range of passing, the intelligence, the subtle movements. He just had everything, absolutely everything. And obviously he doesn't play anymore, but to have a career, to have a career that spanned as long as his did and and as successful as he was, it just goes to show, doesn't it? He was just another level.
00:14:31
afcbournement
Yeah, I mean, just looking at the lineup for that game, so they had checking goal, Bellerin, Gabrielle Polista, Perma Saka, Callum Chambers, Karen Gibbs, obviously Ozil, Oxane Chamberlain, Ramsey, Warcott Giroux.
00:14:46
Dom
yeah I mean if you look at that lineup none of them are getting in that current Arsenal squad not a single one of them apart from Ozil obviously he didn't say Sanchez did you no so yeah they probably played like one or two seasons together but not that long because obviously Sanchez went off to United didn't he but like
00:14:56
afcbournement
No, I didn't. Although I was wondering if they actually played together. and They might have done for a few seasons, maybe. I can't.
00:15:10
Dom
Yeah, that that just proves my point. Callum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs, no disrespect, but they probably wouldn't even be on the bench for Arsenal now.
00:15:19
afcbournement
Hmm. Yeah. Good point. do you want to guess, kiing well, can you remember the Walmart lineup for that game?
00:15:27
Dom
After Boracian goal, Simon Francis in right back.
00:15:29
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:15:33
afcbournement
So in practice, yeah.
00:15:35
Dom
Send it back. So was Tommy Efik injured at that point? So Steve Cook,
00:15:39
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:15:40
Dom
Charred Daniels in left back, obviously. I don't know what would have been sent back, but was it Simon Francis in centre back or was he in right back and then Adam Smith in right back, maybe?
00:15:49
afcbournement
with the eight. Yeah. So it doesn't actually say like right by left, like she's just got like goalkeeper, defender, defender, defender. So yeah. So yeah. Uh, offer portion goal. So you've got Steve Kirk, Adam Smith and Simon Francis. So far they're all there. Yep.
00:15:54
Dom
Oh, okay. Yeah, so in there?
00:16:06
Dom
Their midfield would have been Harry Arter and Andrew Sermon Matt Ritchie would have been injured.
00:16:10
afcbournement
who
00:16:12
afcbournement
Yep. Yep. Yep.
00:16:22
Dom
So it would have been Josh King Glen Murray Oh midfield dangles then Yeah, there you are
00:16:23
afcbournement
Yeah, one more. Midfielder. Yeah, that's pretty good.
00:16:33
Dom
Well, yeah, well, yeah you'd hope I'd remember it because it' been I was there. Yeah, I mean, that was just the the staple, wasn't it? That first season of the Premier League. It was at that time where we were slowly but surely being destroyed by injuries. So we had Wilson out with an ACL, Max Graydow out with an ACL, Tommy Elfitt with an Achilles, and Tyrone Mings with an MCL or an MCL, I can't quite remember. That was at that point in the season where after that, I remember turning to the people I was sitting there and I was like, we're getting relegated.

Squad Reflection from 2015

00:17:04
Dom
But we we didn't we didn't get relegated, shouldn't read too much into specific results. i
00:17:11
Dom
I guess. And if you look at the team we've got now, we're better in every single department, I'd argue. so But unfortunately, so are us.
00:17:20
afcbournement
Yeah, I was just just looking looking and look at your bench as well. and Not very, yeah, well, both benches aren't very strong to be honest.
00:17:28
Dom
No, I can't even... I don't even think I'd be able to tell you would have been on a bench. Jan Kermagunt, maybe. Was it before Christmas?
00:17:35
afcbournement
No.
00:17:40
afcbournement
After 20th December.
00:17:41
Dom
28th December. So, but before the window opened, wouldn't it?
00:17:44
Dom
So it would have been... Yeah, Jan Kermgan would have been on there. He's not on there.
00:17:44
afcbournement
Hmm.
00:17:49
afcbournement
Yeah, no, I ain't got him on here. No.
00:17:53
Dom
Crikey. Glenn Murray would have been on there then.
00:17:56
afcbournement
Yeah, yeah, glimmery, yeah.
00:17:58
Dom
Yeah, ah I'm struggling a little bit here now.
00:18:02
afcbournement
Okay, we're quick to do this and then we'll go to Never Break and wrap this one up.
00:18:04
Dom
Yeah, go on.
00:18:06
afcbournement
So I i want to, yeah, if if you're curious, if anyone's curious, so we've got, haven't I got to pronounce these names right? Adam Fedorichingo?
00:18:14
Dom
Adam Federich, yeah.
00:18:15
afcbournement
Yeah. Sylvain distant.
00:18:17
Dom
Still understand, yeah.
00:18:19
afcbournement
Yeah. Okay.
00:18:21
Dom
Yulan O'Kane, oh gosh, I thought he was injured at that point. Yeah, Yulan O'Kane.
00:18:26
afcbournement
Junior Stanislas.
00:18:28
Dom
Dan Sass, yeah, oh yeah, of course, yeah.
00:18:30
afcbournement
Lee Tomlin.
00:18:32
Dom
Wow, I thought he was ousted from the squad. Lee Tomlin for everyone who obviously remembers him. he I think he played like two games for us, and that was it.
00:18:43
Dom
Just a complete waste of money. But yeah, sorry.
00:18:46
afcbournement
And I hope I pronounced this one correct. Ranti.
00:18:51
Dom
Tequila Rancie, yeah, South African International.
00:18:53
afcbournement
Yeah. Yeah.
00:18:54
afcbournement
so Right.
00:18:55
Dom
Record signing when we signed him.
00:18:58
Dom
Didn't quite pan out, that one.
00:19:01
afcbournement
There we go. They don't or they they always

Upcoming Challenges and Optimism

00:19:02
afcbournement
plan out.
00:19:03
Dom
No.
00:19:06
afcbournement
Let's go to a quick break and then we'll come back and we'll do some school predictions. did do, as I said beforehand, like a school prediction with the guys from Arsenal. So I'm going to keep mine, but I'm interested in what you, what you think, school prediction wise.
00:19:16
Dom
Okay.
00:19:26
afcbournement

00:20:02
afcbournement
Okay, let's bring this one home. I said beforehand, I think right at the beginning, I gave a school prediction with the guys from Arsenal that I felt like they kind of like laughing at me when I opened my mouth as a two, two, but, know, I was trying to be optimistic hanging out with, with Vic on the podcast and stuff.
00:20:12
Dom
but but but
00:20:18
afcbournement
couldn't see a win for Bournemouth in this game, to be honest. And so I thought a draw, although I had to be honest this reflects on it. I can't really see Bournemouth scoring two goals because Arsenal's defense is pretty

Score Predictions and Realism

00:20:29
afcbournement
good.
00:20:30
afcbournement
but you know, that's the optimist in me. you have an optimist in you? Like what's the, what's, what's your score prediction?
00:20:37
Dom
No optimists, I'm afraid. You're right, Arsenal's defence is just too solid, their attack at the moment is, they're all playing really well, I think that really well. if i'm going My most optimistic score prediction would maybe be a 1-0, but I think in a in a realistic world, I think we might be losing this one. I'm going to go 2-0 Arsenal.
00:21:02
afcbournement
Okay, and go squirrels!
00:21:05
Dom
The optimistic one, the 1-0, I'm going to put I'm going to put Van Aleson in, maybe just get a nice goal against Arsenal, but the realest of me, the 2-0, I can see a Gabrielle goal from a set piece because we struggle with set pieces as is, and then I'll go for a sack of gold as well, purely because I do have quite a lot of time for a sack, I think he's a good player.
00:21:23
afcbournement
Yeah, everyone seems to. We were speaking, as I said a few times, the Arsenal guys, and I was like, do you like Saka? And then we were talking from Saka from an England perspective. We went off a bit on a tangent there.
00:21:38
afcbournement
interesting. Yeah. I'm not sure if I should change my score prediction, but I'm allow going to so stick with you too.
00:21:43
Dom
Stick to it, yeah stick to it.
00:21:45
afcbournement
And then look like a fool afterwards, but there we go. I think I'm used to that. Cool. Dom, thank you for your time.

Conclusion and Call to Subscribe

00:21:52
afcbournement
um You You know, it's a good kind of, or Yeah, hearing your experience kind of at the grounds, games, season tickets, and being a season ticket holder and stuff. And hopefully, one, you don't get back too late on us on Saturday. And secondly, that the optimists in us proved right, right?
00:22:10
Dom
Yeah, well, I mean, you need to live in a world full of optimism, right? You need your, you need your glass half full, not glass half empty, as they say.
00:22:19
afcbournement
Yeah, really, really quickly. So like, If Bournemouth don't get a result, where do you think that would leave them with the other two different, not, yeah, Bournemouth. Where do you think that would leave them with the other two difficult games coming up, but where? At Villa and then Man City. Difficult place, right?

I suppose I suppose the positives you can potentially take looking into the future are the fact that a Villa obviously have European football this season so they might be quite tired from their games within the weeks and it was City as well so you don't have Rodri at the moment and I know they're obviously world-class in all departments of the pitch but he's their most important player right and without him and look how well we played against him last year when they had him in there if we can emulate that performance again against them at home this season and maybe we might stand a chance finally getting a point
