Happy fucking Halloween, everyone. Happy fucking Halloween, everybody. Yeah, we're going to be watching a movie called The Bart Man. I don't know if you've heard of it before. I haven't heard of it before today. This is my first time. Yeah, I think it's an indie movie. It's got this guy called Rob Battinson.
00:00:30
Speaker
And so um it's it's it's available to stream on on HBO or Max, the one to watch for HBO, whatever the fuck. But we're starting at the actual movie time code, starting like two seconds in at the the red Warner Brother logo. So anyone trying to watch along after our countdown, that's like the time code from where we're starting. So just giving everyone a heads up for that. And um I think that's all the preamble we need. Let's hit it. All right. On ah three, two, one, and then go, I'll hit play. All right. Three, two, one, go.
00:01:13
Speaker
I mean, I'm already on board with red logos, ah just changing the color of logos and like that's matrix movies when it's like green, I'm like, oh, fuck. Oh. Oh, the Batman. OK.
00:01:34
Speaker
I somehow always forget, or like, I i don't fully remember until I'm starting. I'm like, oh right, we start with the Riddler. Yeah. And the first time seeing this, like seeing this in theaters, I'm like, oh, oh well Batman's staking out of place. He's got his goggle. He's got his like binoculars or something. Yeah. Almost like there's parallels between them. Almost like we're not so different after all, you and I. Yeah.
00:02:05
Speaker
And then seeing the the sun in the ninja costume is a fun thing. Because like this is the you know the start of a whole new Batman continuity saga. like So it'll be like, oh, we're doing ninjas again? Like in the Nolan movie? It'll be funny if just like the League of Shadows is also in this. His son's in the League of Shadows, actually. That's the twist.
00:02:30
Speaker
I remember there being people taking a screenshot of when he's looking at the sun later and be like, is that Robin? Like like fandom brain, everyone needs yeah everything needs to be an Easter. It's like- Go outside and touch grass.
00:02:49
Speaker
There's this thing called stories and sometimes- of like thematic resonance and relevance, and that's why they're in the story, and it's not because it's from a comic book. I love the heavy breathing. Yeah. And then also, I feel like last time we watched this, we'd probably already seen Clute, but like it really emphasized it. like There's so many shots on Clute where it's like looking down into her apartment and then you're like, oh, this is a POV shot. yeah Knowing that Clute was a big influence for this put, it helped a lot of the, not like I was struggling to enjoy this or struggling to understand this movie, but it like a lot of pieces fell into place. like
00:03:34
Speaker
And knowing that on subsequent viewings has definitely made it. It's like, oh, okay, I get it. I get what you're doing here. This movie just looks incredible.
00:03:46
Speaker
Like, i it's a common complaint with a lot of, especially like blockbuster big studio films. It's like, are we hiring people to like light stuff but anymore? Or like, are they- Where are the gaffers? Right. But this, this it's like, okay, there's thought put into all these images and lighting is important for like this. God, so good. ah If I didn't have like equipment on my lap, I'd be up off my seat right now.
00:04:16
Speaker
It's scary. I think it's it's such a good and like you can have things in lower lighting with dimmer colors and still have it look rich and you can still see everything in the frame. You just have to hire people to light the movie, which is right again crazy. It's kind of a new idea. People are just now ah figuring this out. Yeah, I don't know if anyone's heard of that.
00:04:40
Speaker
This guy, I don't, I don't recognize the, this actor playing the mayor offhand, but he almost has like in another movie, like Carrie Ellis would be playing him or something. He looks like, um, like Safeway brand, Thomas Hayden church. Oh, okay. That's a, that's a good poll. Where is Tom? I haven't seen that guy in a while and anything put him in the Batman too. Oof.
00:05:11
Speaker
And that's why you don't live in a house this big, because then nobody can hear you when you get your brain bashed in by the Riddler. Right. And like, I guess. There aren't like active threats on his life. So but does he have like guards? ah He is the mayor and Gotham is like a notoriously like really dangerous city. I would probably bet based on like city crime statistics. Halloween is probably like there's probably a spike in crime. Like maybe he should have extra detail outside his play. I don't know. This is what happens when you relax. This is what why I'm saying. It's kind of his fault.
00:05:49
Speaker
But I do like, I mean, obviously Riddler is a psycho killer, Kaskase, but like we, as you know, as it's like unfolding the layers, like you he is, there there are reasons for why he's doing this and everyone he kills is corrupt, you know, like he is targeting like corrupt politicians. Oh wait, that's today. Oh shit.
00:06:18
Speaker
That was a coincidence. I didn't plan that at all. I didn't even think about that at all. oh I mean, we've had so many good looking gothams, especially like the burden. what Is this their best looking Gotham? I don't know. I feel like it's like.
00:06:34
Speaker
it It has all the right elements of like, it it feels real enough and tangible, but also there's like, it has those Gothic elements that you want that it still like feels heightened in certain ways.
00:06:51
Speaker
I feel like, I think I've said this to you before, I feel like Reeves Gotham, obviously not that he's the only one who created this ah this city in this world in the movie, but I feel like Reeves is like the midpoint between Burton and Nolan. Yeah, yeah. I'm i'm happy anywhere on that spectrum, true, honestly and truly. But um yeah, I feel like this sits nicely in the middle.
00:07:14
Speaker
And these two might drop head masks are super, super fucking creepy. I just wouldn't let this guy into the store. you're You're not coming into the store with that. Even before he pulls the gun, yeah. Yeah, take off the mask before you come into the store. We're not doing this today.
00:07:29
Speaker
And to my knowledge, like I'm sure there'll be some like ah comic nerd at in the comments or or sending me hate mail. But like I don't think the drops or drop head thing is is from like it's just a wholly created thing. And like what it's like immediately iconic, like the look of it. Yeah. Like it would be a good Halloween costume having just a drop head mask. Dude, did you know that today is actually Halloween? Whoa. What?
00:07:59
Speaker
I would be getting off this bus immediately. Any group of men, if there are more than there are there are more than three men that are dressed similarly on on any place in public, I'm fucking gone. Well, and they're i mean it's bad enough when people on public transit play like TikToks out loud, but they're playing videos of them like assaulting people out loud. They're like, oh, I don't know about this.
00:08:22
Speaker
i don't want I don't want to be um ah around a man watching videos of fights, even if it's like UFC. I'm like, I'm actually OK. I don't care if we're at Buffalo Wild Wings. I'm Audi 5000. And I feel like setting, I mean, we've had plenty of like year one Batman or like early on. I think this is like the start of his his second year or whatever. Yeah, second year.
00:08:45
Speaker
But it kind of gets to have its cake and eat it too in terms of like they know what the bat signal is of like criminal seed and they get freaked out and he can use that weaponize that. But then later when he confronts those those goons, they're not taking him that some people don't take him seriously. Like the pain god everybody's actually seen him and in person yet. They like might have heard whispers, but they haven't actually seen him and gotten their shit rocks just yet.
00:09:12
Speaker
Yeah, he's almost like an urban legend a little bit. Yeah. Uh, cause like Matt Reeves also was talking about like, and people keep making the joke of in the penguin there's the show, there's like a mob war that's escalating to people are like, where's, where's Batman? And it, and and re Reeves was saying that like, well, besides that he maybe has other stuff going on, uh, you know, like dealing with the flood at at the end of this, but like that he, even before then he will kind of just be sparse and like, um he just,
00:09:43
Speaker
I've likened him to a ghost. He's like haunting what's the city. That's what he's just going into. It's like i like, I can't be everywhere, but I could be somewhere. And you don't know where I am. But then yeah the fear is a lot of what he has going for himself is just like the possibility that he's there. Yeah. This guy looks so nice. I'm like, leave this guy alone. I know.
00:10:10
Speaker
This would actually be so fucking scary. I don't know what I would, I mean, yeah, getting getting out as away from those fast as possible would be the move. But then if they cornered me, I'm like, I'm fucked. Like I. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe the, the gag is you actually don't get off the bus. You don't get alone. Right. Cause then you're isolated and it kind of draws attention to you. If I just like yeah wait for them to get off, I'm just like, I'm just going to stay here. I'm not going anywhere until I see you guys go somewhere.
00:10:47
Speaker
This sound design is so good of like the clean the rain, but then the clinking as he gets closer, it's good at building tension. But then I also, it it conjures to me like, like a Western, like a cowboy coming into a saloon. It's like hearing the spurs. yeah ah file f Great point, Doug.
00:11:16
Speaker
They're like, goth knights down the street. I'm just, I'm so locked in.
00:11:42
Speaker
ah benchch Let's go.
00:11:46
Speaker
Yeah. And that his ears are so pointy. I didn't realize how pointy they are. They're so sharp. He could use his head as a, yeah, you'd get like right in the eyes, like on some Marx brothers stuff. Yeah. And I also like how tall is our pets?
00:12:08
Speaker
That's a great question, actually. And I'm sure he's he's like a larger frame because of the boots and the costume and all that. Yeah, the boots and the suit. He's suited and booted, if you will.
00:12:27
Speaker
He's 6'1". Batman. OK. Batman, what if we kissed while you were tasing me in the neck? Right. What if?
00:12:39
Speaker
And I feel like this part, right? Well, I do like this one goon is so conflicted and then also- Well, because he's not fully initiated. That's why it's only got half his face painted.
00:12:53
Speaker
Right. That that's initiated. But then this moment of the guy he saves is is scared of them, too. Like, I feel like that's so key to his arc in this whole thing that he, you know, he realizes he needs to calm down a little bit. I don't know. I don't like my if somebody just beat up all six guys that were trying to assault me, my first thought would not be this guy is also going to hurt me. But maybe that's just me. And I just love Batman.
00:13:19
Speaker
and so yeah i would i would i would just feel like like Oh, that's Batman he's here of for me Love this guy whoa I love I love all the cops the like yeah yeah the character actor bit parts in this because like they do such a good job of portraying like the absurdity but then also the tension of yeah how cops would be like this guy is a vigilante who dressed like a fucking freak he's a he's a costumed freak and your boss is like bringing it your boss is bringing him with him to work like it's bring your dog to work day like
00:14:01
Speaker
Not only letting him into crime scenes, but this is like the mayor was assassinated. This is like a really high profile case. You're like, you're bringing him in here. Yeah. You're bringing your little cosplay boyfriend in here. Like, like this is kind of a serious thing. Love Jeffrey Wright. He is incredible. It's it's such glasses are throwing bat ear shaped shadows up onto his face. Oh yeah. Good. Good catch.
00:14:31
Speaker
that's kind of kinky and ridddleler iss kind of a freak for that it's giving gip mask a little bit i mean his whole thing is a like i know it's style it's supposed to be like the zodiac ah but yeah it's easy it's it's a little kinky i was talking about that with with nick yesterday i forgot how we got on the topic of the zodiac but it's so weird and funny that like he dressed. He made a supervillain costume for one kill, one at least that we know of that like that. You know, if if you've seen the movie Zodiac when he ah that that daylight attack of that couple at the lake, he that's the only time he wore that little get up. And it's like, what's going on there? Why did you just do that one time? Sometimes you just want to turn a look. Yeah. He's like, I'm trying something. Hold on.
00:15:24
Speaker
This is what my friends look at me like when I pull out like a $5 vocab word. and and i Just disdain and they're just like sick of my bullshit. They're like, of course you know that word. And, you know, I do roll my eyes sometimes at people online wanting to equate, you know, like it's cool to have a neurodivergent representation, but sometimes people take it too far being like, oh, this character is like,
00:15:49
Speaker
literally on on the spectrum, but he, the broader paths of Batman is, and like, I like that- It's coded that way. I think so. I think- It's also just like a depressed weirdo. Like, yeah and he doesn't have any friends. He has nothing outside of this, and- He has Alfred. Who he, like, is so mean to. He's such a little bitch. like You're not my real dad.
00:16:21
Speaker
And like any of these clues or crime scene things when he has this, he like immediately will say like, he, he like like kind of needs these cops to know he's the smartest guy in the room a little bit. Yeah. Which is also a little neurodivergent coded being able to see the patterns and needing everybody everybody to know how smart you are.
00:16:49
Speaker
Don't yell at Jim like that.
00:16:56
Speaker
And this is a reasonable reaction. Like the killer wrote him, addressed him in a letter letter. how Do we think he's involved with this? Like that's sus. Yeah.
00:17:09
Speaker
yeah No, my precious, my precious baby boy is not involved in this. And that he had to just interrupt that with this solution to rental. It was like, yeah not the time. Read the room. Read the room, Bruce.
00:17:33
Speaker
fucking halloween Happy fucking Halloween, you guys!
00:17:41
Speaker
The scariest part of this movie is having to work on Halloween. right that is that that That's a horror movie. That's a horror movie in and of itself.
00:18:07
Speaker
That's a great segue to like him sharing that moment with the kid. You see the little bloody footprint. Yeah. And that's why he's so I mean, you know, Keaton before was my favorite Batman. I mean, there's pretty much things I love about all re renditions but like.
00:18:27
Speaker
The thing that puts pads in ahead of the pack for me is like his eye, like his, he has such expressive eyes. It's perfect for like, even, even behind the mask that like you, you can tell that he's feeling everything right now. yeah Playing Batman is about having expressive eyes and a strong jaw. A hundred percent.
00:18:59
Speaker
I love Con McNeil, that one one of the, I don't know, I don't know all the all the all the positions in the in the police, and in the police force, but he's to the left of um the man speaking. He's a great character actor. He's awesome in this. Is he the raspy voice chief? Yes. Yeah, okay. Yes. Yeah, i I'm obsessed with just how his line deliveries are with that voice. Like, it's really good. He's got such a great voice.
00:19:31
Speaker
And this was, you know, like the trailer leading up to this movie that had something in the way was I caught like, I love that trailer. And I'll just rewatch it now sometimes as Chicago. ah But like using it in the movie, because it's common for songs to be in a trailer, but not the actual movie. I think you do so well in this. yes I agree. yeah I just hear and it lights reflected on a rainy surface. Oh, yeah.
00:20:01
Speaker
to do it for me and every single time.
00:20:14
Speaker
I just like the idea that these like abandoned tunnels that he's like retrofitted them into like he has actual bats in his bat cave. That's cool. And that's called committing to the bit. Committing to the bat. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
00:20:36
Speaker
This is so, like, Dear Diary, mood apathetic. Yeah. ah hundred but He's a movie teenager. But then also, so much hubbub was made over how the Joker a movie was like, oh, it's like Taxi Driver, but with with Joker, I'd say this is more like because like in Taxi Driver but then other Paul Schrader movies uh that that same writer has done like first reform and stuff all these characters are like anti-social men who journal and stuff and it's like yeah he really captures that vibe. Ladies be on the lookout for red flags if your man is journaling you might not be he might not be doing so hot.
00:21:26
Speaker
There's journaling for mental health and there's journaling to make yourself worse. Right.
00:21:38
Speaker
And, you know, so many version different versions of Batman. There's always like a dread going into a new and it was like, do we really have to see his parents like shot again? And it's like, no, we don't like we can see him. It's just being invoked by the similar crime on the news. And like you see you just see it on his face of like that. He's he's never recovered from, you know, like you don't.
00:22:03
Speaker
And especially not when you have no friends and you fuck up your sleep schedule on purpose for years on end. You're right. Give Andy Serkis an Oscar yesterday. He's so good. and Look at that face.
00:22:30
Speaker
Killers love to do a little cipher. Uh-huh. Can Alfred, uh, like next time he goes to the store, could he get Bruce some dry shampoo? Just like a little dry shampoo. He's looking greasy. A little bit. Help him. Look at his bangs. Like help your girl. He's greasy and dirty. I don't know. I like it. So greasy and depressed. o
00:23:00
Speaker
these Have a shower I Know it sells crazy in here like Not just a body shower you have to wash your hair too, right?
00:23:17
Speaker
He's so easy this I don't care I don't care about anything I He's like, he's like stuck in adolescence. His perception of the world and his perception of his role in it. His ah the simplistic mindset on right and wrong.
00:23:35
Speaker
ah His fucking attitude. His attitude. He's such a little bitch. Like, I love him. I say it affectionately, but yeah. Not my father. Like, shut up. Go to your room.
00:23:48
Speaker
But you're 100% right that like his emotional development stopped the moment and he saw his parents murdered. Like he's still, he's still a child but in that way. Yeah. And yeah, a lot of this is that that child, like, it, I mean, it's weird to call it innocence because he like beats, he's very violent and beats people. to it But like, but it is like like like like the lack of being able to see a gray area is innocent and childlike.
00:24:14
Speaker
And that that's what he's forced to reckon with, with like, not just his parents legacy. I think like naive is probably a better is a slightly better word for it than innocent. Yeah, yeah it's it's it's it's a very simplistic worldview that does not it just doesn't.
00:24:28
Speaker
It doesn't work if that's, oh my God, look at his muscles. Jesus. says and And just like scar up the the bruises and scars. It's great. ah But but yeah, like like you're saying, I think and I think the Catwoman stuff is really good at like having that perspective challenge because Selena obviously not from privilege. yeah She has a very more grounded worldview that he is he never even It's like an alien point of view to him that letter someone someone might have a legitimate reason for doing crime that's like never even occurred to him. The girlies that get it get it. And the ones that don't don't.
00:25:13
Speaker
The silver pen is such a brilliant design choice in this. it's I love his little glasses too. I mean the sunglasses but Alfred's frames.
00:25:27
Speaker
I love that he's not even being like, thank you, Alfred, for like staying up and working on it, or that he's just like, that's interesting, puts on his sunglasses.
00:25:39
Speaker
ah Yeah, it's it's it's good. It really pays off in the really emotional scene they have later in in the hospital yeah where Alfred is like, you needed a father. And, you know, like I, you know, I like did my, you know, like I could train you to fight and like do other stuff. But like, I just, you know, I.
00:25:59
Speaker
Because he probably feels this weight of like, well, if maybe he just needs to work through this, so I'm going to help him do this Batman thing. But he yeah knows it like, OK. He's helping in the best way he can and the way that he knows how. And it's also like Bruce is only going to like he can't get closer than Bruce will let him. Right. It's not like your butler is going to be able to make you go to therapy if you don't want to go and you're a billionaire. Like no one can make you go.
00:26:28
Speaker
men would rather dress as a costume visual anti than go to therapy. Literally.
00:26:45
Speaker
And, you know, I've seen some criticisms or complaint of like that, like we spend so much time on this, like, this modern noir mystery unraveling and there's no like crazy like that we would have never guessed like reveal or something but I think it's more of like the journey of what he goes through in that it like like like the fact that we None of what we learn of like why he's killing these people is is is that shocking. But it's big deal for Bruce in terms like what he learns about his parents and how that challenges like how he just sees the whole world. And like, yeah, I don't know. Like for me, noir, at least the ones that I like is so much about the journey rather than like it's the vibe. Yeah, it's the vibe. It's the journey.
00:27:37
Speaker
I love Gordon having to be like, this guy's hilarious. Jesus Christ.
00:28:10
Speaker
Yeah, I love that Riddler's not just assassinating these like corrupt so officials and stuff that he's like, no, people need to know. like We're going to drag their ass. He's a well-rounded criminal. He can do the hands-on stuff. He can do the cyber stuff. He's diversified his portfolio. Nerd, stay winning.
00:28:37
Speaker
I mean, I love all the iceberg lounge stuff and obviously we're going to be seeing my boy Oz in a minute. So this is print works in London. It's a really famous like electronic club and it actually, I don't know if it has, I think it's already been shut down, which was a very sad thing. I'm sad. I didn't get to go before they shut it down because this place is legendary. Yeah. It looks sick.
00:29:00
Speaker
It's an incredible look. And I love that we set up here because he comes back, uh, three different times to like the club and they're all like the tone and how he like comes, uh, even handles that being at, being at the door is different and how they echo each other. But I love that that this just brute force entry of where he's just like, okay, well I'm, I'm coming in. Yeah.
00:29:26
Speaker
I love a group of twins in ah in ah and and as part of the henchmen. That's always good. Yeah. I want to go to the club. Dude, Batman should have been at the club. He did. he you But like not for work. Yeah, I don't know if he know understands that concept of like, like go to the club, be like to investigate a crime. To fight? No, to shake ass.
00:29:54
Speaker
He should have been shaking ass at the club. I said he's beating ass. I mean, that's important too. Look at him go. Yeah. That's my boy. Oh, ah him throwing the bat. This is so good.
00:30:18
Speaker
And the only thing that interrupts this is Oz waddling up behind him, but like he was ready to just like fight everyone in this club.
00:30:32
Speaker
oh
00:30:43
Speaker
have you Have you started the penguin yet? I haven't. It's so good. You're gonna be squealing the whole time. I know, I know it's gonna be a lot of squealing. The music slowly rising in the background just makes me crazy. Oh, I gotta go.
00:31:14
Speaker
Mr. Vengeance. ah Yeah, I love love I feel like almost no one calls him Batman ah that like people manually call him vengeance. Selena might call him the bat or something. But yeah, no one no one's just saying, hey, Batman. I saw a post yesterday about like bisexual stock being down because Zoe Kravitz and Jan Tatum.
00:31:44
Speaker
Yeah, it was it was a big blow the community. Yeah, we're still processing it all. But also both you both of them are single. So some bisexual stocks way up. Yeah. yeah
00:32:11
Speaker
I love I love that. And so much of the Penguin show is good at honing on like this chip on on Oz's shoulder of like how other people perceive him. Because unlike ah so many other versions, I mean, Danny DeVito's Penguin is a social outcast in the way that like all burdened characters are. But he still comes from a family of money. Like, the Cobblepots are old money. And that's like usually Penguin's thing. Like, this guy, he's a self-made man. like He didn't yeah have shit.
00:32:47
Speaker
It's crazy how expressive he can be with the layers of... Colin Farrell came from the school of eyebrow acting, baby. like There's no amount of makeup on top of his face that can obscure what he can do. Yeah, it's just so... I'm astounded every time I see it of like, wow. That's crazy that that's Colin Farrell, one of the hottest guys that's ever lived.
00:33:12
Speaker
It's all so crazy that Oz is still kind of doing it for him. It's the raw sexual energy. He's got the some a confident big guy. You know, it just, it's it's all about the attitude, baby. It's all about the attitude.
00:33:45
Speaker
And this rendition of Selena is pretty overt. Like, I feel like, at least I, it's been a moment since I've watched all of Dark Knight Rises. I know she had like her thief friend that Anne Hathaway lived with, but I feel like they didn't like highlight an underline that like, no, she's like, you know, aligned and friends with sex workers, but she also lives with a girl that like, it's like, this is not, just this is more than just a platonic friendship. Yeah.
00:34:18
Speaker
I mean, that's been me just me, my girlfriend and all of our cats. he I mean, that's how I comfort my roommate. I kind of just like gently touch their face and. u And then I change into my crime fighting suit. Yeah, they're just really good friends. they And they were roommates. Yeah.
00:34:53
Speaker
And yeah, we brought up the, the Clute, uh, angle before, but I just love all the voyeurism that's part of this, this, this for like, you know, Bruce. You and me both, pal.
00:35:12
Speaker
And something that adds to the layer of twistedness of not only is is he a voyeur just watching all all of this, but like the it and and to the fact that he is so naive and like like kind of childlike in in you know how emotionally developed he is, that it's it's like it just adds this weird tension and layer of like how he interacts and understand sexuality and women. Yeah, it's like a young teenage boy like with a hot neighbor that he tries to see through the curtains. He's like, like yeah that's what women look like when they take their clothes off? Whoa. Yeah. So the tank top is just there all the time. There's nothing underneath it that stays there. because like Has Bruce ever even looked at internet porn? Probably not. I don't know. He was probably too busy looking up like
00:36:06
Speaker
videos about fighting yeah
00:36:20
Speaker
because he's not like kind of similar to, ah well, Keaton has the charm that he can so seduce someone, but like yeah he is also very uninterested in even pretending to do the Bruce Wayne facade, like even at social things. like He'll show up to them, but he's just like- Right, but he's not going to schmooze.
00:36:44
Speaker
I'm not going to spend it. I love that her mask is just like the beanie with a slit cut in the front of it. It's just perfect. But then you still get the cat ear visual. I love that it's more like DIY. It makes sense. It works.
00:37:05
Speaker
Right. You can you can have your cake and eat it, too, in terms of like having a grounded, like ah explained reason for this. But then you ah you don't have to throw out any of like these pulpy visuals or like, you know, concepts like you can still make it all work. And this is this is a great meet cute.
00:37:30
Speaker
This is how I flirt. Oh, this is first base.
00:37:37
Speaker
What base is it when he grabs her and they have to sink heartbeats while they're being quiet? That's a home run. I mean, all of this is hot.
00:37:50
Speaker
um I'm cool. I'm being really normal about this right now.
00:38:07
Speaker
She has like no patience for this stuff. She's like, Oh my God. yeah Give him me the passport. Okay. I'm going to be quiet.
00:38:17
Speaker
it's
00:38:41
Speaker
Well, I need to go change my pants. I'll be right back. It's and like it's hot, but it's also like the way that they both relax into each other for that moment, when both of them clearly need that. Really? like Yeah. there's something like like they're they're They're physiologically in sync right away, and that's so beautiful. Bisexual stocks are way are way up right now. I want to be in the sandwich.
00:39:08
Speaker
It makes me buy the the bond because I, I, I other you basically all critiques of this movie are invalid. Cause I've also seen the, the, the thing of like, well, why did it, why did they fall for each other so fast? I'm like, were you not paying attention? Like who are you watching the same movie? I'm trying to think of what movie it's from and I'm paraphrasing it, but like I'm immediately, just there's some people that like, as you know, I guess as far as like your like nervous system, as far as your like body is concerned, they just feel.
00:39:38
Speaker
Like home they feel safe like yeah, yeah
00:39:45
Speaker
And, you know, like we've talked, Bruce has never had any kind of physical intimacy or like any, I mean, you know, his parents are gone, so Alfred's probably not even giving him hugs. He's probably not even letting Alfred give him hugs. Well, that's why I mean, Alfred would love to give Bruce everything and shower him with affection, but there's no, none of that's happening for him. He's just like, no, you're not my wheelchair.
00:40:17
Speaker
Alpha tries to hug him and he like turns into a grapple fight of like he flips off.
00:40:27
Speaker
I think similar to how ah the like Heath Ledger joker self taped videos that they play on the news were like, I think they just gave Paul Dano a camera and we're like, here's your your lines and let's like he was like self directing it like he would be, you know, I'm sure.
00:40:45
Speaker
And and and i just I just love the whole vibe of this. I mean, we get more of it later. That's Saw right there. Yeah. That's a Saw trap. He's doing Jigsaw shit.
00:40:58
Speaker
But he's like, if Jigsaw- Anna is literally a fucking revelation in this. But if Jigsaw was like a Twitch streamer, because he does all this livestream stuff later. If Jigsaw took the red pill,
00:41:14
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Commissioner Savage is a sick ass name, too. Yeah, it is.
00:41:27
Speaker
Like, no, you idiot, the real club. No, you idiot. Do you even know about 44 Below? Not cool enough.
00:41:52
Speaker
She's like, excuse you. Yeah.
00:42:05
Speaker
I love that this is just how her nails look, and they're not even like sexy stilettos. They're like borderline scary. No, it is. Later, she is using them to like, you know, for offensive purposes. It's great.
00:42:20
Speaker
I like it when a girl is a little bit scary. Aw, these kitties are really cute.
00:42:31
Speaker
so you Sing it, sister. This movie is a comedy. It's a rom-com. And who among us cannot who among us ah women and femmes could not relate to having a thing about strays? Yeah. What are you going to do?
00:42:50
Speaker
I'm so glad they like spend a lot of time with her not in a wig. Her her super short Mia Farrow cut is everything to Mia. Yeah, I love that. It's so amazing on her. When you have that bone structure, you can just do whatever the fuck you want. But then it puts more emphasis of like when she has to put on a wig. It's kind of like a superhero suiting up of like, okay, she's about to fucking go to work.
00:43:24
Speaker
Rat poison. I mean, committed to the bit. You got to give him credit for nothing else. If nothing else, he's thorough. He's a good man and thorough.
00:43:51
Speaker
And like we've pointed out the saw parallel, but like this isn't for a PG-13 movie. This is very gnarly. Like yeah it's pretty dark. Like you're seeing just enough and then you understand what has happened to these victims that you're like, well, that's fucked.
00:44:22
Speaker
And we're already seeing like Bruce's black and white world view. Even Gordon is like, you're making it sound like he had it coming. Right. And Bruce is like, well, he was a dirty cop. So yeah he's bad. He crossed the line. Deserved to get poisoned and then eaten by rats. He deserved to be tortured. He took some money. He deserved to be tortured to death. This is what anyone who does any crime deserves.
00:44:49
Speaker
Jaywalking, death by arsenic. and Late in your electric bill, death. And I understand why why they ultimately cut it, but in that Barry Keegan manhunter-esque scene when he goes to visit him at at Arkham, that's basically what he's saying to to Batman. who was like yeah There's part of you that believes they deserve this, right? yeah that like I want to know who designed the greeting cards. Yeah. These are so good.
00:45:19
Speaker
Well, I want to know who in the movie does design the bit within the world of this. Did he go to like a print? Like, did did did he like design it on, you know, yeah there's a whiz on Canva, baby. He's got a camera account. He's just like me.
00:45:44
Speaker
But then he had to take them to get like printed somewhere, right? No, you can order it online. You can send them in to get ordered online. Send them to his PO box. Keep it real anonymous.
00:46:00
Speaker
And this is all very clue like like, yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. It's like clearly you, have some kind of regard for me, but not enough, not to place me in the direct line of fire. The red wig with the red neon behind her. Movies. Movies. Oh, i this too, where he like grabs your kid. Just don't. Just don't.
00:46:30
Speaker
It's like Psych, I was just checking your eyes. But he holds it for so long and before he says it looks good. Looks good. She's like pissing, pissing me off. If you're going to send me out into the lions, then you better give me a smooch. Like. Right. A kiss for good luck or something. Literally. ah
00:47:04
Speaker
More POV stuff. So cool.
00:47:11
Speaker
Right. There's like layers to the voyeurism because now he like watches, he's watching through someone else's eyes. When you're being, ah when you're having the person that you're being voyeuristic to be a voyeur for other people for you, there's, there's levels to this shit. Yeah.
00:47:35
Speaker
I, the, the, the plot hole is that I'm not asking her a single question about anything she's doing ever. She knows she looks like she knows where she's going. And I'm too scared of her to talk to her, so.
00:47:54
Speaker
And I love how this elevator, but there's multiple shots of how it frames people's heads like like that that pattern behind them. um Yeah, I just love it's like a scope. Yes.
00:48:14
Speaker
This is the other the club within the club, the sexy part of the club.
00:48:33
Speaker
Yeah, I love that he gets to have a couple minutes of the, of the female experience here. And he's like, surprise. He's like, whoa, these guys are kind of weird to you. It's like, yeah, you would know this if you ever talked to anybody. That's a woman, but no one ever talks to me like this. That's so weird. Why are they all looking at you like that?
00:49:00
Speaker
And that he does, he's not even could like where she's like, go look at him again. He's like, I, no, I need you to just rush headfirst into this.
00:49:16
Speaker
He's Peter Sarsgaard is so incredible in this. He is instantly endearing and pathetic. Uh, he's just, he's so good at this man.
00:49:27
Speaker
He has a perfect puppy dog fate, like sad puppy dog. Sad kicked puppy thing going on.
00:50:19
Speaker
os watching him in real time surrealist thing a beautiful woman says i like you too and then i just start tearing up but i started why am i crying in the club right now but i also love the beat of when we cut back to bruce and he's like he's wasted he has like this disdain look of like yeah like her and and he's watching her put her hand on his thigh and he's like jealous he doesn't know why he just doesn't like it yeah he the later I mean it's so blatant how he freaks out with Falcone of like oh ah did did you have a relationship with him did you did you guys like kiss like what was going on do you like like him
00:51:18
Speaker
Nah. No, she needs to go after chapel run and figure out what happened to her friend. Yeah. It's not all about you all the time, Bruce. Like he probably legit just, Oh yeah, you are looking for someone. I forgot I was, I'm doing like my own thing. I didn't even remember that.
00:51:43
Speaker
This is a great introduction for Tatoro is incredible in this. This is such inspired casting. He's so good at this, man.
00:51:57
Speaker
And like. It's it's just the right calibration of of creepiness, because he's like he's like doing the like soft intonation of like, hey, how's it going? You know, like what?
00:52:12
Speaker
touching her face, not make it making unbreaking, unblinking eye contact.
00:52:33
Speaker
So what base did you guys go to? That's not what it looks like. Yeah. Did you guys hold hands at the ice cream parlor?
00:52:56
Speaker
Yeah, I'm going to get in the car with you right now. I'm definitely accepting a ride. There's a car parked over there in that alley.
00:53:15
Speaker
He's so sad. I know. like It hurts me. You know it's about to get bad for him, but I really don't want it to. Don't go to the car, Peter.
00:53:33
Speaker
Yeah, he's definitely, I mean, unless I'm forgetting someone, he's easily the Riddler victim you feel the worst for. Yeah, he's just a he's just a little guy.
00:53:55
Speaker
These moments are shot like horror movies. Literally. Yeah, you get like noir, you get your like slasher flick, you get a little bit of comedy here and there. Really, it's got everything. It's got everything the body needs. It's got romance. It's got action.
00:54:19
Speaker
Yeah, ah the the action we and we're but still have my favorite like action set pieces coming up. I mean, just some of my favorite stuff in any Batman movie. The Riddler really is a freak hoe for all that duct tape. He's got a lot of tape on this fucking bomb collar shit like it. Yeah, but it all happening out of focus makes it so much more disturbing.
00:54:50
Speaker
As many people have said before, it's just as much about what you don't show. Right. And we can see what is the art of the tea is, is lost in many things in many sectors of modern life. Well said. Thank you.
00:55:14
Speaker
On a tangentially Batman related note, I think about in tenant like Um, where baby Washington's about to get his teeth pulled out and they cut to train like Nolan. Uh, that just, that's the great, it's just a great choice. It's, it's, and you, it just still hurts you even though you don't see it. Yeah. He really pushes the edge of like, wow, you still got the PG 13, right? You cut, you, you're showing us just the right amount to like, we know exactly what happened here and it's very disturbing. Yeah.
00:55:50
Speaker
I love him just like walking out the pillar. Batman, Nolan, Arpats, and boyfriends. Movies about boyfriends.
00:56:03
Speaker
I mean, there's multiple boyfriends in that in this because we got Bruce and Gordon, but then Riddler, in his mind, Batman is his boyfriend. yeah that's A parasocial relationship with his boyfriend.
00:56:19
Speaker
I mean, I've just been, you know, following you forever and I know we're the same and we're also in a committed relationship. The Riddler is just like Taylor Swift fans like that.
00:56:30
Speaker
ah Reeves was actually doing social commentary on Taylor Swift with this. Wow. Yeah.
00:56:49
Speaker
And a lot of these shots with the the like ah city background and cityscape, like those those were shot on on the volume. which is like ah you know It has this reputation because Disney uses it so shittily to like kind of hastily ah do like their subpar looking Disney plus shows with no real sets but when you when you blend it with real elements and are like you know strategically using you're not just like haphazardly just growing actors in front of it you're actually like think and it looks like you upset her so I take this is a good sign and like a casual roast like oh wow a girl actually cares enough to get mad at you that's crazy I was glad you're talking to a woman yeah
00:57:50
Speaker
Actually, maybe I like Bruce's hair when it's dirty. It's kind of giving helmet right now. It's kind of, it's like almost a fuck-ass Bob. A little bit. more like Like a month and a half more, that's a fuck-ass Bob. but
00:58:06
Speaker
But it's like clear that like, he's not, you he does not do this all. He does not go out. I don't like shit. I don't go outside.
00:58:22
Speaker
Like it fulfills alfred wish Alfred's wish of like actually like putting in an effort socially in public, but he's just doing it for the investing. Like, well, I guess i got this fear yeah yeah I'm only going to this for work. He's just got the grind set. Grind set mindset.
00:58:42
Speaker
hu I still need to see what's the Cronenberg he did Cosmopolis. Yeah, I need to see that too. I feel like all the screen grabs I've seen of that are him in like the back of a limo. Yeah. like but that With a very similar length of hair.
00:59:17
Speaker
And he's like, I'm not even giving you a ah fake smile for the yeah press photo. Like I just can't. yeah i don't now we're not I've already filtered you out mentally that you're not even here.
00:59:52
Speaker
That bit in the score and just a slow, slow shot of her stepping out of the car is so like old Hollywood. I know. Yeah, Giochino's score is so perfect here. But then speaking of old Hollywood, there's multiple moments where I was thinking like our our pets would have ah been great in that era. Sure, sure, sure. Give us a wide berth here. It's so funny to me.
01:00:18
Speaker
I need to see the Prince of the City. ah i planking on who is in that movie. It's just like about New York corruption, I think, but I think we've cited that as an influence. Okay.
01:00:36
Speaker
Is that right? he Yeah. Torturo's making a meal of it.
01:00:50
Speaker
Also, his reaction is perfect when Bruce sights the Hippocratic Oath and he just, like, craps on it. That's funny. That's good. Yeah. Get him, Bruce.
01:01:11
Speaker
he That's good. And he he just immediately starts laughing at that.
