What is a Jamaican patty? it's It's like a and it's kind of like an empanada with a totally different crust, and the center is either beef or chicken, and they're kind of spicy. They're delicious.

I think they have them in Florida, too, but they're delicious. That wasn't one of the main reasons why I went. But we were at Moon Palace Ocho Rios, which is a fabulous resort.

And then we just fucked around in the shop all day. Yeah. For two days. Right. We, well, you brought some goodies that we're not allowed to talk about. I shipped some stuff ahead of me. Yeah. I was packing the light. So I shipped ahead some, uh, some goodies and might hint at some of that a little bit later, but, uh, some stuff I wanted, uh, Dennis and Jared, uh, to play with and try out.

Um, And then we did stainless Damascus. I shipped some steel ahead. Yep. Cause that stuff's expensive. Yeah. And ah yet again, stainless Damascus is a finicky bitch.

If, uh, You guys at home not tried it or you've seen my videos and seen the failures. It's a hard thing to do. but And we found out what the hard thing specifically was, really.

That's right. So there's there was ups and downs this weekend. there was the We started with the downs, and we thought we thought we blew two full billets, like, what, $600 worth of steel?

Yep. We thought we just annihilated it But it turns out we were able to grind it clean. We found out, I guess it was this morning, that um that we ground it clean. I think we lost probably half of the first billet.

Yeah, yeah. so So so we're it's overheating problems. yeah Stainless is very finicky. The stuff we're using is AABL, 154CM. And the 154 is very specific with its temp range that you can really work it at. You work it too cold, you crack it too hot, you burn it. And you have like a hundred degree approximate forging window and you overheat it and it's toast.

So we overheated the first one a little bit, trying to dial in the forge and the, what do you call it? I think parameter PID. Which isn't, I'm not you really used to working with a PID exactly.

That's not really up my wheelhouse. So, try and figure out And we thought it broke. We thought the solenoid went. Right. we We did on the second billet, we had an issue where...

I still don't know what happened. just It did not kick off. And we looked and it was probably 100 degrees over the temp. Over what we wanted to And then we baked a bit. It was just really, it was probably only that temp for maybe a couple of minutes. It was not.

And it was during the rant, like the soak. During soak. Right. So we hoped it didn't do a whole lot to it and found out later it really wasn't that bad on the second one. No, not bad at all.

but We thought we had a piece solenoid going out, but it turns out that was fine. I think but we what we think was going wrong in there, the relay? it might I've got a feeling it's a solid the state relay. It's just not.

I'm going to get a ah higher quality solid state relay and see how that goes. Because sometimes it's not clicking off. Right, right. And so we we had to pay close attention to the temperature, making sure it was doing what it's supposed to be doing.

And not overshooting. But at the end of the day, we've got two, what are they, 30-something layers? but Yeah, 29-ish on the first one. I don't remember. Oh, I didn't even count the second one. I just stacked them all together.

It's probably a little more. Yeah, because some of those layers were real thin. Yeah, yeah. So it's 35-ish. um But then we're going to... So you've got to go home tomorrow. But I'm going to put those together.

Mr. Jared will maybe make something out of it. And, you know, we'll, I've got figure out what the, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to do a ladder out of it. I'm going to keep it relatively simple.

I'd like to get a success under my belt sure um and make some knives out of it. I like that idea of doing like a diagonal ladder that you're talking about. I think I'm definitely going to do that. Yeah. That's a cool look.

and And honestly, you really don't need that many layers. The stainless Damascus looks so good on lower layer. Unlike carbon Damascus, where if you leave it real low layer, can sometimes be muddy when you try to etch it.

Stainless just isn't that way. And so you really don't have to get it very high. Yeah. So, well, that's the thing. Like we got two billets. that 30 layer, and I think we can cut each one up into three.

It's a closed gas forge that is indirect heat. So it heats a giant floor plate and then pushes that heat around to the top of the to the top of the steel, to the top of the furnace. And it's never directly on the steel like you get in a lot of open forges.

And. That design works great for copper because obviously we don't get hot spots. We don't melt copper in weird spots. and We can be very detailed about what the temperature is set at. And that ended up working really well for us. We're doing stainless as well.

But of course, when you go to a burner type forge, either Venturi or forced air, you know you you inevitably have to deal with hotspots. It's just part of the game. i mean, there's even with ah the best state-of-the-art PID and um temp control, you still have a spots getting slightly hotter than others.
