Cake, Clients, and Care Plans | What Really Matters In Esthetics | Jess Solo Birthday Episode

S2 E21 · Beyond Esthetics

In this special birthday episode, I’m reflecting on the Top 10 lessons I’ve learned about success as an esthetician—insights shaped by experience, growth, and the beautiful messiness of building a career in this industry. From boundaries to belief, we’re celebrating what it really takes to thrive.

Then we shift into part two: a grounded and real conversation about creating homecare routines that actually work—for you and your clients. I’m sharing how to stop building routines around fantasy and instead meet clients exactly where they are, so you both get better results and deeper trust.

This episode is a celebration, a strategy session, and a little soul talk all in one.

Announcement of Solo Episodes

00:00:50
Speaker
And I'm going solo today, so my better half and i are not going to be recording together today. um' with With our work and just life schedules currently for the summer of 2025, we're just planning on doing some solo episodes as often as we need to so that we can stay on schedule.
00:01:13
Speaker
That is very important to us, and so that's just what we have decided. We have made our podcast schedule, however, for the rest of the year, and we're excited about that. In fact, we have some amazing guests scheduled and we're working on scheduling one to two more guests.
00:01:30
Speaker
And so we have a lot of really fun episodes and so much value to bring to you guys. Aaron's episode was a massive hit. And of course, all of our guests that we have had have just been such a great hit. And so...
00:01:43
Speaker
ah We are excited to have more people to bring you more value, a community over competition, right? The more that we can learn from each other, the better.
00:01:55
Speaker
and so, yeah, so we have some really fun plans for that.

Birthday Reflection and Solo Camping Experience

00:01:58
Speaker
And I'm excited about today's episode. i definitely prefer recording with Tiffany for sure. She just has so much value and I obviously just,
00:02:09
Speaker
I love her heart. I love her thoughts. ah So she will be missed today. um But I'm excited because today is July 6th, 2025, and it happened to be my birthday yesterday, July 5th.
00:02:24
Speaker
And thank you so much to everybody who reached out and wished me a happy birthday. It truly meant the world to me. Birthdays are a huge deal to me, and i did not celebrate with my family this year.
00:02:36
Speaker
Which is a whole other story i usually do. and um And I didn't. And so I just felt very loved and appreciated everybody who left um comments on the post that Tiffany made and everybody who reached out to me. i just...
00:02:53
Speaker
Yeah, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. It really meant the world to me. And I had a very good birthday. It was chill, which was exactly what I wanted and needed.

Challenges of Working from Home

00:03:03
Speaker
i kind of have a problem with, so a lot of people might not know this, but I mostly work from home these days. And it's been a major transition for me. i used to spend 50 to 60% of my time traveling and working in person with people.
00:03:22
Speaker
And then i made a shift this year and i i probably do 70 75% of my work at home. And I'm not in person nearly as much as I have been for the last 12 years of being a rep. And it has been a huge adjustment. I don't know if any of you work from home or have loved ones who work from home it is not an easy thing to do. And so I have kind of had an issue for the last, especially three months or so. And I know I talked about this on the last episode, but I just have a hard time relaxing at home. My home hasn't really felt like a sanctuary because it feels like work. So i just am working on that and working on like making that shift. And so yesterday,
00:04:13
Speaker
So I had actually gone camping on Thursday and was amazing. i had such an incredible time. i love going solo camping every once in a while. Sometimes I camp with friends. Sometimes I just like to go camp by myself because I'm 39 now and most of my friends have families. And so it's really hard for me to find people who are able to go with me, especially because I can tend to be pretty spontaneous with stuff like that.
00:04:40
Speaker
So I've really enjoyed to just do it solo and like do whatever I want whenever I want. I'm not answering to anyone. I'm going to sleep as much as I want. We go on whatever hikes I want to go on. So um I did that and it was awesome.
00:04:55
Speaker
And then yesterday for my birthday, i was like, man, I just want a really chill day. i want to actually be able to relax at home and just give myself permission to, you know, not clean you work or, you know, think about all of these projects or feel just those types of obligations.
00:05:15
Speaker
And I didn't, and it was amazing. It felt so good to just chill and to relax and to be home and, um, you know, go sit at the pool and read and just get a workout in. And I had a really good lunch with one of my girlfriends, um,
00:05:30
Speaker
And so it was a very good birthday. It really was just exactly what I wanted and needed. So thank you again for everybody who reached out. It really meant a lot to me.

Top Attributes for Beauty Professionals

00:05:40
Speaker
And so i actually have had an outline for this podcast since last week.
00:05:47
Speaker
However, with it being my birthday, I decided to add to this episode. So this episode is going to be in two part The first part is going to be just in celebration of my birthday.
00:06:03
Speaker
ten of like the most important attributes to a successful beauty professional. That's what we'll say. It can also be thought of as I mean, guess this is actually probably more accurate.
00:06:19
Speaker
The 10 things that I have learned over the last two decades that I feel are the most important. So We're going to start with that.
00:06:30
Speaker
And then the second part of this episode is going to be about home care routines and creating home care routines that work.
00:06:42
Speaker
So we're going to start with my top 10 things. I thought since I turned 39 yesterday that I was going to do nine things, but I'm just going be so honest with you.
00:06:54
Speaker
i There's 10 very, very important things. So I got to number nine and I was like, well, I really need to add this one in here too. So we ended up with 10 things. And so It didn't really match, you know, my motivation for doing this, but it's important nonetheless. So in celebration of my birthday, i am going to go over the top 10 things that I have learned about success in the industry over the last two decades, two and a half. I've been an esthetician for 20 and a half years.
00:07:27
Speaker
Okay, now I'm actually going to be doing them backwards as well. So i am actually going to end with the number one most important.
00:07:38
Speaker
And so I'm actually gonna start at the bottom of the list. You ready? I'm excited. Number 10, never stop learning.
00:07:49
Speaker
So this one is very important because it's very easy to think that you have gone to aesthetic school and now we know all the things, right?
00:08:01
Speaker
um Nothing could be further from the truth. So school definitely prepares you to pass a test. And, you know, you do learn a lot about the industry and how to get into it and a lot of the the modalities and the the theory work and,
00:08:17
Speaker
You know, so much important information happens in school, but it just cannot stop there. So I really encourage everybody to keep up on continuing education, especially in an industry that evolves as much as ours does.
00:08:34
Speaker
I'm telling you guys, like the things that I was taught in school and now ah Things have changed so much and they continue to. So it's really important that we continue to learn. We continue to grow. If you don't, you will get left behind.
00:08:52
Speaker
Now, lot of the people that we work with in our one-on-one coaching, we actually have them put continuing education on their calendar. We've talked about this in episodes before. you know Whether or not that's once a month, once a week, twice a month, doesn't really matter, but we do want it to be something that you actually have scheduled in, and that way you are going to be able to keep that promise to yourself and really follow through on that process.
00:09:17
Speaker
Now where to go for continuing education. Um, there's a couple of different things. One thing that I have always recommended people do is go to a trade show every year so that you are aware of what's going on in the industry.
00:09:31
Speaker
All of the different skincare lines that are out there, take the classes. It's just a great thing to be a part of. And I do think it's extremely important to partake in that opportunity.
00:09:43
Speaker
Now, another place that i would love to send people to is actually the MedSpa Mentor app. So my very good friend, Marty Hutchinson, who owns M-Spa Boise and Aesthetics Academy of Idaho, she actually has this amazing app, you guys.
00:10:04
Speaker
It is so incredible, the amount of education And that is available on this app and she adds to it all the time. And Marty is just someone to know, you know, she's totally one of those people in the industry that you want to follow. You want to learn from, i value this woman more than words can even express.
00:10:26
Speaker
So let me actually, I'm just on social media right now, looking at it, ah so that I can send you guys directly this Um, up um Let's see, her page is Marty underscore Med Spa Mentor.
00:10:44
Speaker
And so if you go down, actually in her highlight, she has app. And that is going to tell you where you can get that information. Let's see, there's another post just three days ago.
00:11:00
Speaker
about the app again, and you can reach out to her directly. Let me click on this link and see if it's available here. Yep, there it is. So if you actually just click on the link in her bio, the very first option is to access the Med Spa Mentor app.
00:11:16
Speaker
So I think for more of that ongoing education and the kind of self-paced learning, that is absolutely what I would recommend to you guys.
00:11:28
Speaker
Okay, so never stop learning. That is so important. Now, number nine, we talk about this a lot on the podcast, but that is that fundamentals are king. Okay, there's no magic equations. I just cannot even tell you the amount of people who...
00:11:45
Speaker
want something magical and that is going to all of a sudden make them super successful. Like there's some sort of magic potion, like there's some sort of secret. There is no secret to success other than mastering the basics and what Tiffany and i have really just dubbed the fundamentals Cause I don't know a cuter, more catchy thing to call these things. If you guys can think of one, let me know. I guess I could take to chat GPT to like call this something much cuter, but the fundamentals really are king, right? We cannot think that there is some crazy secret that we're looking for when it comes to success.
00:12:25
Speaker
It's literally just consistency in these very basic things. So what are these basic things we've talked about them before they are selling home care. getting the Google reviews, doing your follow-ups consistently, um offering extraordinary customer service and treatments, okay? Like literally offering a fantastic experience and treatment and then pre-booking.
00:12:52
Speaker
Whenever I have business owners come to me and they're like, my business is tanking, my business is slow and they're freaking out. I'm like, hey, before you jump off a cliff here,
00:13:03
Speaker
Let's go ahead and cross our T's and dot our I's first and just make sure that these things are happening very, very consistently with, you know, you, if you're the business owner or with your team, you know, about any esthetician, even if you're working for somebody else. Now all spas are going to have different systems when it comes to like doing your follow-ups and stuff like that. But for the most part, these fundamentals are very cohesive across the board And so whenever you start to get in your head that like you're not doing well or your numbers are just not great or your, your books are getting a little bit slow.
00:13:43
Speaker
These are the things that you need to look at. Okay. Stop searching for the secret sauce. Stop blaming the economy. Um, just go back to the fundamentals and make sure that you're being as consistent as possible.
00:14:00
Speaker
Number eight, boundaries and policies are important for you and your clients. So boundaries, ah this is something, again, that we've talked about. I mean, i think everything that I'm about to say, these are all things we have talked about so much on the podcast, but boundaries are so important, you guys, as an esthetician.
00:14:22
Speaker
um In general, just making sure that you have those personal boundaries with your clients, with your coworkers, with your schedule, especially, especially if you're a solo esthetician, having boundaries between your work life and your homework. So Um, sorry, your work life and your home life.
00:14:41
Speaker
So having those boundaries and keeping to those boundaries are so important. There has been a number of solo estheticians that I will get started and I will offer, you know, a bunch of coaching and they do really well in the beginning.
00:14:56
Speaker
and these are not coaching clients. These are like spa partners. And so I'll do all that coaching. I'll make all of these recommendations to them and they do pretty good in the beginning. Cause they're like, oh yeah, I never would've thought of that. And then, you know, a year down the road, they come back to me and they're completely burned out because their boundaries have just gone completely out the window.
00:15:14
Speaker
And we've really all been there. I get there in my position with eminence all the time. um And so it's just really important that you go back to that. So you just kind of have to decide what are my boundaries in these different situations and how am I going to make sure that I stick to them?
00:15:29
Speaker
And then if I ever get away from my boundaries, how do I get back into my boundaries? Right. And then policies in general, to me, policies and boundaries can really go hand in hand, but making sure that you have policies that are set in place. And again, we have a whole episode about this.
00:15:47
Speaker
ah policies are also great for your clients as well. You're actually doing them a favor. Like policies are a very nice thing to offer to your clients because they don't if they don't know what the policies are they they don't know what the policies are right so policies are set in place not just for you but it's also just doing your clients a favor and giving them that information so that they know how to like proceed in different scenarios like 24-hour cancellations and whatnot
00:16:20
Speaker
ah So boundaries and policies are important for you and your are clients. You are doing them a favor. Number seven, alignment and hard work are necessary for success.
00:16:32
Speaker
In our last episode, thank you so much for all the amazing feedback about that episode, by the way. ah we talked to so much about alignment and how important that is. But in addition to that, you've got to have a really good work ethic and to be a beauty professional of any sort. If it's hair, if it is skin, it doesn't matter.
00:16:52
Speaker
Your work ethic really matters. I would really love to do a whole podcast episode on this. You just have to have a good work ethic. So alignment's really important on the spiritual and energetic side, but on the human side, you're going to really need to make sure that you've mastered your work ethic.
00:17:11
Speaker
So those two really do go hand in hand when it comes to success in this industry. You really do have to be prepared to work hard and be in alignment at the same time. Number six, when you know your values and are solid in your philosophies and purpose, that's when you have branded yourself as an esthetician and will attract aligned clients.
00:17:34
Speaker
So we also talked about values in that last episode. So if you have not listened to that last episode, you're missing out. It was so good. And I highly encourage

Skincare Philosophies and Social Media Misconceptions

00:17:45
Speaker
you guys to go back and listen to that or listen to it for a second time.
00:17:50
Speaker
So I'm just going to say that again, when you know your values and you are solid in your philosophies, meaning like your skincare philosophies, and you are anchored into your purpose as a beauty professional, that is when you have branded yourself because your brand is you, you are your brand. And so if you know your values, if you know your skincare philosophies, if you're anchored in your purpose, that is how you brand yourself. And when you're branded,
00:18:17
Speaker
then that is how you attract clients that are aligned to you. okay So I'll just tell you guys, like some of my skincare philosophies are basically, um, that aging is amazing.
00:18:31
Speaker
So I've loved the aging process, uh, personally for so many different reasons. Um, but I, really do love that. I have this reach with a younger crowd and, ah can really instill like,
00:18:47
Speaker
confidence in the aging process and embracing it and making it a really beautiful thing and just aging as gracefully as we possibly can and letting everybody know that it's okay to age. You're going to, it is going to happen and getting older is the best thing that happens to most people.
00:19:03
Speaker
um I think as we get older, we just tend to get a lot happier for various reasons. And so sure, there's going to be some things that come along with that, but you know what, we're There's something you can do about anything, right? We can support our skin through these things ah that happen with the aging process too. And so that is a big value of mine.
00:19:21
Speaker
and But, you know, a lot of people who work with me also know that I'm really, really big on skin barrier and not over exfoliating the skin. Yeah. You know, I really believe that a healed skin is where results come from. And so without diving too deep into that on this episode, that is something that I know to be true. i believe to be true and i and is a huge philosophy of mine. So those are like two of my main philosophies.
00:19:51
Speaker
And when you know those types of things about yourself, I mean, the other thing I guess about me is that In the treatment room, I prefer very luxurious treatments that also happen to be an amazing experience and corrective all at the same time.
00:20:08
Speaker
And those are the types of like protocols and stuff that I write for the people that I work with and help them to create treatments like that. So those are my three things. Those are like the three things I want to come to skincare. Like those, those would be some of my main things. There's a few more, ah but because I'm so anchored into that, I definitely do tend to attract people who believe those same things and are on board with those types of philosophies.
00:20:35
Speaker
And then that is also just part of my brand. So those are things that I, you know, talk about a lot, like, especially on my eminence page, And that is how I attract people who really value that type of information. So I'm just going to read this last one. One more time.
00:20:50
Speaker
I know Tiffany and I are actually getting ready to record another episode about this type of stuff. When you know your values and your solid and your philosophies and your anchored into your purpose, that's when you've branded yourself as an esthetician and will attract a aligned clients.
00:21:07
Speaker
Okay, number five, your prices attract your clientele. and So that's so important. Now, I'm not saying... what type of clientele to attract.
00:21:19
Speaker
I'm just saying that your prices reflect that, right? So I work with people who like, I work with one woman who charges $400 for a two hour facial. She's booked. She's, she's super busy and her, she just happens to attract obviously that type of client who's looking for very luxurious, um, corrective treatments,
00:21:42
Speaker
two hours long and they're willing to pay her that much money because she really is so good at what she does. And so she just has this certain clientele, right? And work with other people who want to be more inclusive. And so we would build a menu and pricing around being a little bit more inclusive and having some different options on the menu.
00:22:02
Speaker
So when you're building your pricing, it's really interesting. The first thing that Tiffany and i actually encourage people to look at is not the prices in your area. That's actually number two.
00:22:13
Speaker
The first thing that we want you to look at is who you're looking to attract. What type of client do you really want? And when you can nail that and get really deep into that and have a very, very solid picture of what that is and vision you know of who they are Um, then you can look at pricing in your area and then that is going to help you to decide how to set your prices. So your pricing is going to attract a certain type of clientele. So whatever you want that type of clientele to be, that's when, you know, you really want to look at the way that you're pricing yourself.
00:22:49
Speaker
But also, you know, charge what you're worth. Okay. but Number four, social media is not as necessary as you think it is for your success. You guys can't see me because I'm not even going to release this as a video, but like I'm rubbing my eyes because, oh man, on the amount of oh people who just think that Social media is something that you have to have to have to have, do you know, to be successful.
00:23:20
Speaker
is maddening to me. It is so maddening ah because they're just, I don't even know. i think we're just in a social media age. And so people believe that to be true, right? But it's not true even a little bit because this industry is built, like businesses are built, no matter the type of beauty business you have, it's built on word of mouth, not social media.
00:23:44
Speaker
So yeah, It just, I, I, I, it makes me sad that people stress themselves out so much about social media when I'm like, why? It's like the last tool to consider. Right.
00:23:58
Speaker
So word of mouth is really where it's at. So that's not social media. It, you know, i I do hear from a very, very small amount of people you social media has helped them build a clientele, ah but man, that is so rare. And usually they have done some groundwork first anyways. And so I just, I wish that we didn't put so much pressure on ourselves. Now in my business, social media does matter, right? Like I am doing something completely different. I'm not in the treatment room anymore. So my social media is for,
00:24:34
Speaker
my coaching clients is to build this community. Right. And of course, yes, I am marketing my programs, obviously. And so I do have to have more of a brand and more of a social media presence on social media.
00:24:48
Speaker
Uh, that was such a backwards way to say that. Um, and with eminence too, like I, Well, actually, this is really good example. My eminence page, like I definitely don't make any money doing that. Like i just do that to serve people, but then that served me to build this business, right? And so for me, social media matters a little bit more than it matters for an actual esthetician in the treatment room.
00:25:13
Speaker
um So there's so many other things to consider before you start stressing yourself out about social media. What is so cool about this is that I was listening to the Boss Babe podcast about two weeks ago.
00:25:24
Speaker
And they were doing a kind of a Q and a, like her and Lori harder just had this huge audience. I think that's who it was. It might've been someone else, but, um, they had this audience, they got, they kind of like get their community together and they do these Q and A's and stuff.
00:25:41
Speaker
And there was an esthetician who was like, you know, same thing. She's like, social media is so exhausting. And it's just like one more thing that I have to do in my business. And both of these women, like these two very, very successful women and coaches said the exact same thing to this girl that I have been saying to you guys forever.
00:26:00
Speaker
It's a tool. You can do it if you want to if that feels good to you like sure. You want a little bit of a presence on social media, probably because even if they, if someone goes to your Google page,
00:26:15
Speaker
then usually that is going like if they Google you, then usually that's also going to pull up your social media, right? But they go to Google first and then it pulls up your social media. They're going to take a look and sure, there's going to be some stuff that you want on there. Like maybe your bio, uh, your hours, where to find you you, know, a little bit of content so that people can just get a gist of whether or not they're aligned with you. Does that mean that you're posting every day? Absolutely not. Right.
00:26:44
Speaker
That is not what that means. It just means that there is something there on social media that people can see that kind of brands you, right? That doesn't mean you need to be posting every single day.
00:26:55
Speaker
That's not where new business even tends to come from. So business first comes from word of mouth. Then usually people go to Google Um, and then maybe they're going to take to social media, like maybe.
00:27:10
Speaker
So just stop stressing yourselves out about it. Social media is not a necessary evil for your success. In fact, most of the estheticians that i work with who are booked and have a solid clientele and are like super happy and fulfilled in their career have barely any social media presence at all.
00:27:31
Speaker
Okay. Barely any presence at all, or like they haven't posted in a year, but it doesn't matter. That's not where their clientele is coming from. So, um, it's just something that I think we, we believe, right. Or estheticians believe this and it's just not true.
00:27:48
Speaker
So, You know, it's a way to market yourself and it's a way to brand yourself, but it is not number one. And we also in our coaching business, we always tell people to just like walk away from it then, right? As soon as they start to get stressed out about it, we're like, well, then put it away. It doesn't matter. You're not all of a sudden going to become irrelevant. Like you have this entire database of people that you can just reach out to via text if you want to get people booked to like,
00:28:13
Speaker
It's just not what we think it is. And so don't stress yourself out or feel pressure around social media. Instead, put your attention on your Google page and, um, you know, having a good referral program, getting yourself out into the community and making sure that you're just really offering like the best service experience possible.

Importance of Humility and Openness

00:28:32
Speaker
So there's many other things that are there in, um, your tool belt and social media, in my opinion, can be lost if, you know, that's how you're feeling about it. So I personally love social media.
00:28:49
Speaker
I don't really have any problems with it. Sometimes I scroll a lot, but for the most part, like i don't, I don't really have issues with social media. I got over that a long time ago. So um just know it's not, it's not a necessary thing that you need to do. Like don't stress yourself out about that.
00:29:06
Speaker
Number three, community, supporting other people, community over competition. This is a really interesting thing that I learned a very long time ago. The first rep that I was working underneath of and in Arizona with Eminence, she taught me this and Um, you know, we, she would open eminence accounts in the same parking lot. I would never do that by the way. So, but she did and she didn't do it all the time. Like, I don't even know how that was happening, but neither it it had zero effect on either business. And that was so amazing for me to see.
00:29:40
Speaker
think I was 26 at the time. And so that was such a great age too. especially as social media was starting to grow around that time for me to see, oh, uh, you know, maybe, maybe competition isn't so much of a thing.
00:29:56
Speaker
And so I really appreciated that. And then as I have grown and now have my own territory, and now I'm in the business of coaching, this has just become very apparent to me that the people who are the most successful are the ones who are just cheering on and rooting for other people.
00:30:12
Speaker
Now I believe on a deeper level that this is just an energetic thing, right? I just believe that, The more you help other people, the more you cheer other people on, the more you support people, the more success is going to come back to you. It just has such a high vibration to it when you feel that way, as opposed to that very constricting energy of being in fear and being in competition with other people.
00:30:40
Speaker
Now, I believe in some healthy competition. Like I'm a competitive person, but at the same time, i that's such a small part of it right? Like I think that it, I don't look at other people and be like, especially in business, I don't feel that way.
00:30:58
Speaker
That's kind of a weird thing about me, but I don't feel like I'm in competition with anybody in business. It's like other things. I'm obviously a fitness competitor, so I am pretty competitive that way. So I do think like healthy competition can be a good thing, but there's just context there.
00:31:13
Speaker
i think when it comes to business, what everybody, especially in the beauty industry needs to understand is that this is not a saturated industry. ah This is an industry that's a key driver to the economy, meaning that more and more people want skincare and are getting into skincare routines. And that just means that there's more and more room for other people.
00:31:34
Speaker
And ah yeah, so it's just not, I don't know. I believe that when we support other people, we cheer other people on, it just brings that much more success back to us.
00:31:45
Speaker
So I have seen that to be true time and time and time again. Number two, non-judgment and gaining trust with your clients. So you guys know that this is one of my number one values that I teach this to you.
00:31:59
Speaker
you know be Be really careful about the the way that you're talking to people and the content that you are putting out there on social media and making sure that you're not judging people and shaming other people.
00:32:10
Speaker
And instead that we are loving people into reaching their goals, right? That we're just here to guide them and support them and help them. and ah coming from a place of non-judgment is how we build trust. Trust is how we build relationships. Relationships is really where success comes from. So coming from a place of non-judgment is obviously really high on that list. So that is literally the number two thing that I have learned about success as a beauty professional is with our clients, especially like that's really what I'm talking about.
00:32:43
Speaker
coming from a place of non-judgment. People don't know what they don't know. So we don't need to be a-holes that we went to school. So we think we know all the things. Trust me, you don't. You will change your mind down the road about so many things.
00:32:55
Speaker
And so just come from a place of non-judgment. Just work on gaining trust with people. That's how you're going to be able to do that. Make people feel good about themselves. Compliment people. Love people. Serve people. Guide them. Educate them. Stop making, you know, judgmental comments or You know, people do it in person and they do it on social media. And so I think that ah I said this before, but estheticians are just gaining a really bad reputation because a lot of them are like that because there's a lot of influencers that are setting really, really bad examples. And so let's not do that. That is not how you gain trust. That is not how you build a clientele.
00:33:32
Speaker
And so coming from a place of nonjudgment is super important. And then number one, here we go. What is the number one thing that I have learned that will make you successful as an esthetician?
00:33:46
Speaker
Humility. I've said this before, but it is so, so, so important. In fact, I had a meeting with a very good friend of mine. I think it was last week. And man, what were we talking about? yeah.
00:33:59
Speaker
She does education for a school. ah Well, ah like a chain of schools, basically. And so she was back in, i don't know, somewhere like Atlanta, maybe. I'm not really sure. And she was working with their education team.
00:34:12
Speaker
And she like educates the education team, if that makes sense. And she really struggled because a lot of these educators, you know, had been estheticians for her. 10, 15, 20 years plus, and they were just so closed off. And i was like, yeah, I know.
00:34:31
Speaker
I always tell people when they're hiring to hire new people because newer estheticians are just so much more open and malleable and coachable. You know, people like myself who've been around in the industry for 20 years, like we can really struggle with just thinking that it's like our way or the highway and we know all the things.
00:34:52
Speaker
And that's when we stop learning. That is actually when we stop growing. So I had to learn humility. about halfway through my career, i kind of realized ah that things are changing all the time and that if I wasn't careful, i was going to get left behind if I ended up just being really stuck in my ways.
00:35:14
Speaker
And so I just had to really open my mind and open my heart to yeah, just being open to different thoughts, different philosophies to, you know, new studies that are coming out. I mean, gosh, I've even seen studies that are saying that retinol doesn't make your skin photosensitive. You know what I mean? It's just things like that. Then I'm like, well, I've believed that for 20 years. Now you guys are saying that that's actually not true or that like vitamin C and vitamin A don't cancel each other out. Like,
00:35:44
Speaker
I don't know, the same with the sun. People, you know, the the ongoing argument about sunscreen and sun and what really causes cancer. And I mean, it is just...
00:35:57
Speaker
The more open that we are, the more we're going to continue to grow in our career. And so humility is so important because things do change all the time and your skincare philosophies, they're going to continue changing too.
00:36:15
Speaker
And so if we can just remain really humble and remain really open, that's how we are going to continue to grow and to serve people better, right? We want to stay up on the information so that we are giving our clients the best information possible.
00:36:32
Speaker
And so that just comes with humility. So those are my top 10. So remember number 10, never stop learning. Number nine, fundamentals are king. Number eight, boundaries and policies are important for you and your clients.
00:36:47
Speaker
Number seven, alignment and hard work are necessary for success. Number six, when you know your values and you are solid in your philosophies and anchored in your purpose. That's when you have branded yourself as an esthetician and will attract your most aligned clients.
00:37:03
Speaker
Number five, your prices attract your clientele. Number four, social media isn't as necessary as you think it is. Number three, community and so supporting others over competition.
00:37:16
Speaker
Number two, non-judgment and gaining trust are the most important way to build success. And number one is remaining in a state of humility and openness.
00:37:29
Speaker
So I hope you guys love that. I know you've heard it all before, but repetition matters. And a lot of us just forget these things sometimes. So Thanks for hanging out with me and going through all of that. That was part one to this episode.

Creating Realistic Home Skincare Routines

00:37:46
Speaker
I'm very excited about part two. So this is going to be about home care that works and meeting clients where they are. So we're going to dive into a topic that every beauty professional has faced.
00:38:01
Speaker
How do we build home care routines? Our clients will actually use and get results from. So this is actually a question that I'm asked often. What are the most important products to recommend to someone to maintain their results or something of that nature?
00:38:16
Speaker
My answer often surprises them. I have found in over two decades in skincare and working with hundreds of spas and thousands of estheticians over the years, that what matters most when it comes to creating a routine is that the routine is doable for the person that we are recommending it to.
00:38:32
Speaker
Also that we're recommending items that they don't already have at home. Now I'm not going to be spending too much time today on that last point. And instead we're going to be focusing on those doable routines and why that matters the most.
00:38:46
Speaker
So a routine your client can not commit to is a routine that will not produce the results that they are looking for. Right? So there is not a magic answer here. The answer is just not usually what people think it is.
00:39:02
Speaker
So as estheticians, we often get excited and want to recommend everything our client could benefit from that or could benefit from. We love skincare, right? We usually have some different feelings about skincare and a lot of experience with skincare that our clients don't. And so we get really, really excited skincare.
00:39:23
Speaker
these seven or eight things that they could be using at home that's going to help them reach their results. Trust me, I feel the same. i really do. Like I completely get that. I am, I'm a skincare junkie myself. So I totally understand why we do that. And we're like, well, I know it's going to work. And so I want them to have all these things, right? Well, the problem with that is that can overwhelm the client.
00:39:50
Speaker
We can also see a lack of follow through. and if that was wasted money, that's also lost trust. So we're always going to be facing different types of buyers and clients with different lifestyles and preferences.
00:40:05
Speaker
So in addition, everyone is at different levels in skincare. So if we can match a routine with the client's preferences, we're going to build trust, get them on a routine they can commit to you that truly serves them. And in that way, we will deliver the best results for them.
00:40:19
Speaker
Skincare is also a form of self-care and me time and wellness and mental health. And we want everyone to have that gift. So it's ultra important that we cater to their own reality and experience.
00:40:33
Speaker
Okay. So the key is not creating a perfect plan. It is about creating a possible one. So what are some questions that we could ask during a consultation? I'm actually going to refer you guys back to season two, episode 12. I recorded that on February 24th, 2025, that I gave you guys the consultation that I use and that I teach And all of the questions that you're going to want to ask to get this information to learn where clients really are at.
00:41:09
Speaker
Right? So that's kind of the key when it comes to creating a home care routine that really gets somebody results. It's about creating a routine that's very doable for them. Well, everybody is a little bit different with where they're at.
00:41:23
Speaker
You know, they're, they're different in their preferences in their are lifestyles, they're different in their knowledge of skincare. They might have nothing. They might might already have five things and you have to get that information so that you know where to go from there.
00:41:37
Speaker
So I would refer you guys back to that episode if you want my exact consultation. Here are a couple of things that we can ask though. ah How much time do you have for skincare at night? Okay. You can be as blunt as that. Like there's nothing wrong with asking somebody that or asking them, do you prefer steps or do you prefer simplicity?
00:41:55
Speaker
You know, those are two really, really easy things that you can ask. Another question, and this is actually part of my consultation, if you guys go back and listen to that, is what is your current home care routine, right? So if we know that, that actually tells us exactly what type of person that they are. So just really remember that results come from consistency, not complexity.
00:42:15
Speaker
So if I had to break this into tiers, like if I am working with somebody who's brand new to skincare, and doesn't have anything, well, then we would start with the non-negotiables, cleanser and a moisturizer.
00:42:31
Speaker
Here's where luckily I actually haven't caught any flock for this. Um, I think people trust me enough at this point that they don't really question what I'm about to say. and i will walk you guys through my thought process on this, but I don't always recommend an SPF in the beginning.
00:42:48
Speaker
And I'll tell you guys why, because s SPF for somebody who isn't doing anything right now putting like zinc on your face isn't going to feel good. You know what I mean?
00:43:00
Speaker
Sunscreen is so hard to like find one that people really love. And that is so key to getting them to do it. is They have to like it. I love that we're in a time in skincare where there are so many different options for SPF.
00:43:15
Speaker
I'm a big believer in zinc. I don't love chemical SPF. I think we, you know, could preferably use them like less, and more of the mineral base, like more of just the natural, the zinc.
00:43:27
Speaker
um I have a lot of different reasons why I feel that way. If you guys want me to get into that in a later episode, I definitely will. I don't mind talking about it. um and But just in this circumstance, when I'm trying to get somebody who's doing nothing on a home care routine, sunscreen is not part of my non-negotiables.
00:43:49
Speaker
Because it's more important to spend some time finding one that they actually like again, so that I can get them to do it. So it's this is following the same philosophy as this subject. Like how are we going to get results? We're going to create a routine that's really doable for somebody that they enjoy. Well, SPF can be a little bit difficult that way.
00:44:09
Speaker
So usually what I do is just start out the cleanser and with the moisturizer, I make sure that I'm fitting their texture preferences with both, both of those. And then what i will do is maybe give some s SPF samples, or i usually will say to people, the next step for you is for us to work together to find an s SPF that you're really going to love.
00:44:32
Speaker
ah Because obviously that's going to be really important when it comes to helping you reach your goals. And so today I'm just going to give you a couple of different samples and we'll see, you know, which one you like better, but you don't even need to start with every day. Just,
00:44:47
Speaker
on a day that you feel like trying one out, let's try it out. So I make it super gentle and like easy, not as if I have this expectation for them to be like trying to do this every single day when they're used to doing nothing, but it just can get us on that path of starting to find the right s SPF that will work for them.
00:45:05
Speaker
So that the next time that I see them, or even the time after that, like we can really make sure that they found one that they love. and that we can get that into their routine on a daily basis. So that's my philosophy on that. I always put myself in the client's shoes. If I was doing nothing and were like, you have to wear this SPF every single day, i would be like, man, this feels like crap on my face. Like I'm used having nothing on my face and now you want like, no. do you guys know what I mean?
00:45:36
Speaker
I mean, if maybe if it was a powder, it would be... better, but s SPF is just hard. So it's not necessarily part of my non-negotiables. I do want to get them on an s SPF as soon as possible. Yes, I i do.
00:45:51
Speaker
But that's not going to be like the first time that I'm working with them more often than not. So Okay. All the situations are different. I just have to stop. Otherwise i'm going to keep going down that road.
00:46:03
Speaker
So, okay. Next, I want to make sure that once they're really comfortable with their cleanser and their moisturizer, and we're working on an s SPF, however, we're going to do that together.
00:46:14
Speaker
Next, of course, I need a serum in their routine. I need something that is more targeted and I also want some exfoliation. Now here's the other thing though. I love the dual cleanser exfoliation thing that we have going on these days.
00:46:28
Speaker
i love just having a very, very gentle, um enzyme or mild alpha hydroxy acid in a cleanser so that we're just killing two birds with one stone and then not over scrubbing the skin.
00:46:41
Speaker
So exfoliation in this case would depend on the type of cleanser that they had. um So first I would go for the targeted serum and then I would consider whether or not we needed, you know, an exfoliation in there, like if it wasn't part of the cleanser, right?
00:46:56
Speaker
Now the next step would then be your eye cream and your masks. Right. So make sure that they have an eye cream that's working really well for them and that they have a targeted mask to use on a weekly basis.
00:47:08
Speaker
So think of it as a skincare staircase. You don't build a penthouse first. You start with the foundation. So that is usually how I work with somebody who's like brand, brand, brand new Now, the only thing that I would end add into there is an oil.
00:47:26
Speaker
So this is not a conversation I've ever had on the podcast. And this is one of my philosophies that I just tie into the barrier support and the healing I was talking about, but you've got to have an oil in your routine. Like you just have to and there's so many out there to choose from, but adding an oil into the routine is a game changer for anybody.
00:47:46
Speaker
You know, when you can get the right one that feels good to you or to your clients and they get that into the routine, oh my gosh, the results. they Like, it is so amazing.
00:47:59
Speaker
So I'm a huge oil girl. ah That being said, like, I had oily skin my whole life and what fixed it was oil. I've had congestion for years. What fixed it was oil, you know, even my pores and my skin texture lately, i have been seeing amazing results with that because i just implemented a new oil. So I'm huge on oil. So I will tell you guys, this is how I approach the oil thing is with the serum actually, believe it or not.
00:48:31
Speaker
So ah usually, cause I do still want a serum into the routine. i do want a traditional serum that is that smaller molecular weight that can absorb deeper into the skin, you know, more concentrated corrective ingredients. Yes, that is what I want. And it is not, well, I want an oil.
00:48:49
Speaker
And so ah usually what I will do is at that point kind of teach people how to just cocktail some different things together. So I'm going to give you guys my best example. i was with Tiffany at the beginning of may in salmon at her mother's day event.
00:49:06
Speaker
And there were a couple of women that I was talking to and helping them, you know, build their routines and purchase their products. They already had a cleanser and a moisturizer. And so they were interested in where to go from there. And they were both still feeling dry, which i was like, uh, you're dehydrated. Right. So I didn't even necessarily say that to them, but I was like, Oh yeah.
00:49:29
Speaker
Um, you're probably just missing some, some hydration in your routine. I also knew that they wanted to keep it super simple. Like usually people will just say that to you. And my response is always, absolutely. You don't need 10 steps in a skincare routine. Some people really love that, but it's not necessary if that's not what you want.
00:49:47
Speaker
And then I build trust with them that way. Right. And so I was like, actually, you know, to get you guys the results that you're looking for would be very easy. You only need to add a mist and a serum into the routine.
00:50:02
Speaker
I have some really good ones in mind for you guys. So I showed them that. And they were very excited about the mist very excited about the serum that I showed them.
00:50:13
Speaker
And then what I said that I the next step for you that is going to really help you to reach your goals, it's also going to be really easy to do, is to add an oil in your routine.
00:50:25
Speaker
And how you're going to do it is just by adding it into your moisturizer. Like you can just mix those two together and apply them at the same time. So it's really easy. This is the one that I would recommend for you here. Feel that, you know, smell that, see if you like it so that you'll know next time that that's what you're looking for.
00:50:43
Speaker
And both of them were like, oh gosh, well, while we're at it, we'll just get that right now, especially if it's really that easy to do. And I was like, okay, cool. So usually that's how I get somebody onto an oil as I'm like, Hey, you know, this is really the next thing that we would want to do to help you really reach those goals.
00:51:00
Speaker
And it's really easy to do You're just going to put, you know, ah you know, try one drop at first and then try two drops and see how you like it and just mix it right into here. It's really just, it's quick. Yeah.
00:51:12
Speaker
So that's usually how I get an oil into somebody's routine. That's really easy. Now, i obviously realized that I was just talking about a mist and that also is not part of that list. So the reason why it isn't a part of that list is because every skincare line is really different. So with Eminence, you have to use a mist because that actually activates all of the other products because we're a water-free company. So you just, you, you have to have like a damp skin or add water into the the product or like a mist is usually how I have people do that.
00:51:42
Speaker
Uh, not every skincare company is like that. And so I kind of left it on that list because I think it just depends on the company and how the products are really made. So that might be in like your, you know, very first tier, which is the cleanser moisturizer. Maybe the mist needs to be a part of that. I don't know. It just depends. So You want to know more about how to use the particular products that you're carrying so that you know kind of when.
00:52:08
Speaker
If you are an eminent spa partner, i will just say right now, it's in tier one, non-negotiable cleanser, mist, moisturizer. ah Everything is going to feel better and go better. They're going to get better results if we have that liquid in there.
00:52:25
Speaker
um For other people, that might not be the case. Okay. So that is how i build routines that are very doable for people. And i have another really good example that I want to share with you guys. So my older sister, when I moved back to Idaho, well, she lives in Utah, but moving back to the area eight years ago, she was probably Wow, she might have been my age at that time. I don't know. Time's flying. But she's kind of a soccer mom.
00:52:58
Speaker
Like she has four kids, really busy life. But she was interested skincare. She wasn't doing anything. ah But she did express, you know, that she was just noticing some pigment and some fine lines and, you know, was starting to ask questions about it.
00:53:17
Speaker
Well, I got really honest with her and I said, well, you know, do you feel like you are ready to start with a nighttime routine? Like, is that something that's doable for you?
00:53:28
Speaker
or is it going to be easier for you to just have a couple of products and maybe you do something more in the shower? And she was like, actually, you know what? i I think I would need to start there. And I was like, cool.
00:53:39
Speaker
So I gave her an exfoliating cleanser to keep in the shower And then when she got out of the shower, i just gave her, um, it was, it's more of a concentrate or like a fluid eminence calls it. It's kind of a cross between a serum and a moisturizer and it comes in a pump.
00:53:53
Speaker
And it's so it's super easy. so I was like, get in the shower, wash your face. We're going kill two birds with one stone with this cleanser, hop out, just do a couple of pumps of this, put that on. Let's, let's just go with that and see how it goes.
00:54:06
Speaker
And it has not taken long. I mean, ah within a year, she had probably four products and now she has a whole and, um, and um she wouldn't if I wouldn't have met her where she was at. Right. And so that's just a huge value of mine. It's a huge philosophy of mine is that the, the skincare routine that is doable is the skincare routine, the skincare routine that's going to get results. And that's actually how you build trust with people.
00:54:36
Speaker
You know, I'm also so big, you guys know this on the good, better, best with skincare and I can't get somebody to best case scenario If I don't meet them where they are initially.
00:54:47
Speaker
So, so that's my philosophy. That's my belief. It's just about building trust and making things very doable for people. And you know what? You could be at tier one with those two to three products for three months before they're ready to move on. That's okay.
00:55:03
Speaker
We're just getting to know that person, building that trust, getting them into the habit is what matters so much more. then getting them on all, you know, seven, eight steps right away.
00:55:17
Speaker
No, we have to build the habits first. So again, skincare is a staircase. We can't just build the penthouse. We can't just jump to best case scenario when someone's not ready for it. We have to start with the foundation.
00:55:31
Speaker
Okay, so then how are we going to keep people on these routines and kind of like, quote unquote, hold them accountable and just keep them going?

Follow-up, Accountability, and Masterclass Promotion

00:55:42
Speaker
Well, number one is going to be your follow-up messages. Check in with them after they bought product, ask how it's going and be that open book, like create that open line of communication so that they know that they can come to you and they have questions about what they're doing.
00:55:57
Speaker
Number two, reinforce progress at follow-up appointments, right? So keep um keep up that positive reinforcement at their appointments. Ask them how it is going and really commend them and congratulate them on you know, make them feel really good about what they're doing And if they aren't being as consistent with it, maybe it is too much for them, right? Maybe you need to switch to just a morning routine like I did with my sister versus a nighttime routine.
00:56:31
Speaker
Like you might continue to, you might need to continue to make those tweaks to just get them into the habit, right? And then also, like I was saying earlier, just normalize. Number three is normalize building slowly over time.
00:56:45
Speaker
So you can just say things like, I'm going to recommend two essentials for now, and then we can just revisit this in a month and see if you're ready to move on from there. So, i'm
00:56:58
Speaker
that's That's my philosophy. That's how I gain trust with people. And that is truly what I believe about a skincare routine, right? So when people are asking me that question, like, what do I, you know, what are the most important things for me to recommend? I'm like, well, whatever is doable for that person. You know, you have to get the information from them first. You have to dive into where they're really at with skincare and, and then also asking them or just like making sure that you're not recommending what they have at home already. Again, just revisit my episode about the consultation. and I go into a lot more detail about all of that.
00:57:33
Speaker
So it's not a one size fits all there. Nothing could be further from the truth of skincare. It is not one size fits all. You really want to cater to the needs of that specific person and build the habit first. There's nothing more important than that.
00:57:48
Speaker
So. ah don't let your knowledge become a barrier to your client's success. Your role is to translate that expertise into action that they can take, which is another thing to like, just bring yourself down to people's level. Yes, we love skincare. We know a lot about it. We're very excited about it.
00:58:07
Speaker
But when we're working with our clients, we need to meet them where they are. so I'll just say that again. Don't let your knowledge become a barrier to your client's success. Your role is to translate that expertise into action they can take.

Okay. That's it for me today. you guys, I had to hold myself back so much there. It's really hard for me to talk about those topics without just like going into everything in my three hour masterclass that I teach. I have to like rein it in with myself constantly because I have a hard time not just going off on all these tangents because it's a subject I'm so passionate about, which by the way, i have lots of time in August. If anybody's interested in booking my retail masterclass with me, it's still $150. I've got to raise the price on that soon. So if you want to get in to that class at that price, it really is career changing. I get the most phenomenal feedback. about that class. And I'm so passionate about it because there is no need to feel daunted about retail sales or like intimidated by it at all. You're truly just helping people. People want skincare. They're trying to get into it.
00:59:24
Speaker
And so i love holding your hand through that process and just helping you see it in a different way and approach it in a very different, easy way. And also calm your nervous system around the whole topic around it.
00:59:40
Speaker
So definitely DM me at the underscore SD underscore coach. If you're interested in booking that time with me, it's three hours. It's virtual. It's $150. Sometimes it's like three and a half hours, to be honest with you. um you We'll actually get a recording. You'll get a follow-up PDF. like I have just made this very comprehensive and easy for you. You don't even have to take notes as we're going. I do have a workbook for people who like to take notes, but for the most part, I'm like, just listen and engage with me. Talk to me. like Let's work through all of this, and then you're going to get a recording and a PDF anyways. and
01:00:16
Speaker
I can even with AI these days, just make notes for you in one minute. So um let me know in my DMs if you're interested in doing that. And I can definitely set up a time with you to do that.

Coaching Options and Educational Resources

Speaker
And if you loved this episode, screenshot it and share it on Instagram, tag me. Let me know the one takeaway that you really got from this, whether it was far from part one or part two.
01:00:41
Speaker
I would love to hear that. Now, also our mastermind is getting ready to start for September. Well, not ready like it's July, but we are starting that in September. So it's on the calendar. Everybody has the dates. Everybody's got the invites to every single call.
01:01:00
Speaker
And we're really, really looking forward to it. That being said, the groups are closed. We're not taking any more people. ah Those groups actually closed in March. However, we will start one to two more groups in January. So if you do want to be a part of the winter spring mastermind of 2026, please let us know. We are going to be starting that list very, very soon.
01:01:29
Speaker
The September group filled up within a week in March. So we're halfway through the year. If you want to get in on that, please let us know now.
01:01:42
Speaker
Then also we are taking on up to three one-on-one coaching clients. We'll probably start maybe one person in September, and then we're open to starting maybe two people in October.
01:01:57
Speaker
Now, lately i have been asked what the difference is between the mastermind and the one-on-one coaching. So I'm going to take a few minutes and try to explain that the best that I can. The mastermind is really interesting. The mastermind is group share and group accountability.
01:02:15
Speaker
So what's interesting about the mastermind is that we do have a roadmap. So we we do create a roadmap for the calls and However, so everything, everything that you want out of the mastermind, you are going to get out of it. We do always make sure of that on an individual basis, but the mastermind is a beautiful transformational container with about five other estheticians who are in that group with you.
01:02:48
Speaker
And so you're learning not just from me and Tiffany, like we do chime in where we need to but you're learning from people who are in the same boat as you. Maybe they're ahead of you in some ways. And then you also get the opportunity to help people who need your value that you have to share too.
01:03:07
Speaker
So it is just so much more of a group experience and just having a community like this loving, safe, supportive, graceful, inspirational group of estheticians that you meet with every other week.
01:03:25
Speaker
It's beautiful. It is amazing. It's one of my favorite things I've ever done. Now, the difference with the one-on-one coaching is that, man, this is all about you and nobody else.
01:03:37
Speaker
So with that, you basically go through the same process. You fill out the same workbook. We then create the roadmap for you, but the roadmap tends to be a lot more comprehensive, right? It's a lot more action-oriented. is a lot more comprehensive.
01:03:52
Speaker
There is a lot more action that you're having to take outside of our calls as well. Like there's there's always work that you're doing between the calls ah because it's just you. It's you, it's me, it's Tiffany, and we're going to make some serious progress together, like some serious progress. Now with both, you're going to make progress.
01:04:12
Speaker
But the experience is different, right? Because you're either in a group with, you know, five, four or five other estheticians beside yourself, or it's just you and me and Tiff. And we're just like pushing you and guiding you and loving you and giving you work to do outside.
01:04:29
Speaker
And then you're only reporting back to us. And then we just dig deep on every single call that we have. And we end up with seven calls in the coaching package. So the one-on-one coaching ends up being seven different calls.
01:04:45
Speaker
ah The first call is still an exploratory call because when we go through your workbook, we make a lot of notes and we ask a lot of questions. And then it's actually after that, that we end up creating the roadmap for the following six calls.
01:05:01
Speaker
And The mastermind group, those calls kind of vary because it just depends on the time of year and the scheduling and when we start and when we need to end. i believe this year there's eight calls for each group. There actually might even be nine calls.
01:05:15
Speaker
um And then there is a big difference in price too, of course, because the group format is going to be a little bit less expensive because the energy is so much more dispersed where the coaching is just a little bit more expensive. It's not that much more expensive. It's a little bit more expensive because it is just so targeted and it's just like, you, you and the end tip and you have 100% of our full attention.
01:05:36
Speaker
And those calls are 90 minutes. And then those group calls are two hours. So that's kind of the difference between the two. i hope that made sense, but you guys can continue to reach out to us in our DMs.
01:05:50
Speaker
If I'm on vacation or something, sometimes I'll refer you to Tiffany and vice versa. If she's away with her family, she'll say, Hey, can you reach out to Jess? So We definitely want to answer your questions. Reach out to either of us. And if we can't get to you right away, ah go ahead and just reach out to the other one. And we are going to get back to you.
01:06:06
Speaker
