Hosts Discuss Personal Schedules and Boundaries

00:00:53
Speaker
I am doing well today. Thank you for asking. It's, I have a really busy day ahead of me. And so, um I think I'm trying to really focus on being present in all of like the tasks because I've got a lot of hats to wear today. where but I'm podcasting, we're coaching, I'm in the treatment room. So I'm a statisticianing. Um, and then I have my personal stuff. I like got a heavy workout to do today. So i'm like, try not to like focus on that ahead of me. You know what what I mean? And then of course, like the mom stuff. So yeah, that's where, that's where my head's at today, but I'm going to like firmly plant my feet right here and be happy to be here. How are you today? Well, ah when are you going to get your workout in?
00:01:37
Speaker
You know what? I've been so strict with my boundaries on my gym time. So I've worked it into my schedule where I leave the treatment room by 3 p.m. every day. And then my kids are out of school at four. And so I was like only giving myself an hour to work out, but it doesn't leave me time to like get my walk in after my lift. And I've got like a longer left today. So it's late day. And like this little segment that I'm in is pretty intense. Um, so now I'm like the boys go to wrestling and practice and then I have Gemma ride the bus. So I've got a like extra little buffer of 30 to 45 minutes. So like three to four 30 is like my me time before I go into mom mode. And it's kind of my decompressing time. It's where I can just like really pour into myself. It's been hard to like keep that boundary though, but when things come up, because it's like, if I'm not feeling it or when the kids have stuff or when my husband Ryan's like, Hey, you know, do you want to like grab a snack when you're done with your treatment room, like shift. And I just have to like firmly say no like this is me time. So yeah.
00:02:39
Speaker
That's really good. Boundaries and presence. We've been talking a lot about presence lately. So I love to hear that. And I think on your busier days where you are wearing so many hats, you just have to be ultra present.
00:02:51
Speaker
And i have always loved that about you. You're such a good example of that. Thank you so much. How are you though? I'm good. i got up at five for the first time in a very long time.
00:03:04
Speaker
Look at you. I don't like it. I don't like it at all, but it's kind of the same. I feel like, um, I have a very long day too. I mean, i literally, because the last couple of months have been pure chaos with eminence and with my competition that I just have this long to-do list of things that just keep piling up and piling up. And so,
00:03:29
Speaker
I have structured my week this week because I technically had this week off to compete this weekend and now I'm not. i was like, well, I'm not going to fill in any meetings. i just need to sit down and get as much done as possible. And so that felt really good to like take that list last night and then put it on a daily schedule. Yeah.
00:03:50
Speaker
You know, but I was like, I'm going to have to get up at five and get my workout in so that I can just hunker down and be really present and getting all these tasks done. Cause like, I'm not good at sitting in front of a computer doing tasks. It's my least favorite thing to do. So, but I think being really present is, I mean, same for me, I'm just going to have to be super present. I let it flow. and um, and so i just wanted to get up early and have my morning time and get my workout out of the way.
00:04:21
Speaker
It always feels so good once you're in it, right? It's just the, the, like making yourself do it and get out of bed. Nobody wants to get out of bed at any time, but like not at five and not at 10. No one wants to get out of bed. So you just like got to do it. So, but, so I'm feeling really good. Cause it does, honestly, it feels very good to just wake up and get your workout done there. I mean, I think that we can all agree with that. yeah, Agreed. ah and We're so excited about our episode today because we have a good friend on.

Guest Introduction: Nicole Leder's Journey

00:04:56
Speaker
um So this is my friend, Nicole Leder, and this is going to be Nicole and Tiffany's first time like getting to know each other and interacting, and it's our first time connecting in five years. We were just talking about it like... I feel like it's not been that long. And then when I asked you to be on the episode, i was going back through our DMs and realizing it really was since 2020, which is wild. And so how I know Nicole is through one of my spa partners in Utah. So I'm the trainer at a spa there. So we met there. We got to be really good friends and And then when you left in 2020, we still were talking for a little bit. And then you started your business and, you know, it was a wild year and we all just kind of like moved forward. And then time became not a thing. Tiffany and I talk about that all the time. I'm like, time is just not even a real thing.
00:05:52
Speaker
And it just, it it like goes by so fast. And so i am literally overjoyed because I obviously watch you. i follow you. i like your stuff. Like I know what's going on, but then I don't know. I came across a post just whenever it was that I reached out to a couple months ago and I was like,
00:06:12
Speaker
wait a second, she's really like done it. She has taken this business and she has grown it and it's amazing. And I was like, you got to come on the podcast. Like you got to you know, we love to bring people like you who have started this journey and then just flourished with it and, and bring that to everybody who's in our community. So I'm really excited that you're here and just super excited to reconnect and then connect to you and Tiffany as well. So,
00:06:45
Speaker
um Nicole Leder is a 14-year master esthetician and owner of Salt City Skin Care, which is such a cute name, BTW. I really love that. Obviously in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nicole is also the Utah Education Ambassador for SkinScript and a licensed aesthetic instructor. She's known for her customized, relaxing, and results-driven facials and the chill vibes of her treatment room.
00:07:12
Speaker
Outside of the spa, you can catch her spending time with her baby and husband, binging trash TV and napping. I love it so much. So Nicole, welcome to Beyond Aesthetics. How are you doing today?
00:07:29
Speaker
Thank you guys for having me. I'm so excited. I'm doing great. i just got back into town. i am originally from Texas. So i I went and saw my best friends and I'm just rejuvenated. I'm ready to kind of get back into life today.
00:07:44
Speaker
I love that. When did you leave Texas? So how long have you been in Utah then? I have been in Texas or I have been in Utah since 2016. So next year, 10 years.
00:07:56
Speaker
Okay. Are you happy with this move? Are you like, it Oh yeah. Okay. You don't miss i was born here. I just moved when I was really, really young. So I was raised in Texas, but all of my family lives here, for the most part. So it's just really nice to come back and have that family unit around me.
00:08:17
Speaker
For sure. That support system. Yeah. Is that where you met your husband is in Utah? Yeah. I did. i met my husband here in Utah um and we have been together since 2018. So we got married in 2021 then we had a baby last year. So he is going to be turning two in March.
00:08:36
Speaker
And what's his name? His name is Jack and he's perfection. I have a Jack. I just love the name Jack. It's so perfect. It really is. Oh my goodness. Oh,
00:08:48
Speaker
I love that. Well, what a perfect time to record when you're like back from vacay. That's awesome. Exactly. like, I'm not tired yet, you know? Exactly. What was your favorite thing you did with your friends in Texas?
00:09:02
Speaker
So my best friend just had a baby he herself. So I just got to get all these like three month old baby snuggles and got to see my other best friend and her two daughters. We literally had a spa night. I did little face masks with them, painted their nails. like it was so fun. So just spending time with my friends and not having any expectations or an itinerary is my favorite kind of vacation. ba So that's what we did.
00:09:26
Speaker
Oh, I love to hear that. act Tiff, are you like that when you go on vacation? Do you just like let it flow? Okay. I love to not everybody I travel with is that way. So I, that's my dream vacation is to just like go with the flow. Yeah. If we don't want to do anything great, if we do great, like, yeah, no expectation. I think yeah the key that's awesome.
00:09:48
Speaker
Yay. Cool. Love it. Um, okay, Nicole. So I'm excited to really get to know more about you and your story and your journey of like where you started and how, how you got to where you are here today. But let's start with like just some little bit of background. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Um, you just told us where you're from, but tell us like what inspired you to become an esthetician.
00:10:13
Speaker
so my esthetician journey, like it never started as being an esthetician. I was in school originally to like undergrads for nursing. So I wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to help people in that way.
00:10:26
Speaker
i was working at a doctor's, a family practice at the time. And i was slowly realizing like I want to help people but not in this type of environment.
00:10:37
Speaker
Everyone's mean everyone is sick they don't feel good and I'm like that's not where I want it where I can see myself full time. So um I had another friend and there was a spa South Lake, Texas, and they were just hiring for like the laundry girl. The girl to fold laundry to like the spa attendant. And so I was like, you know what, let's do it. Like, let's just do a little bit of change.
00:11:03
Speaker
So I went there and I got my first facial ever there. And it was it was a good facial and it was a fun experience. And I was like, I could do this. And my best friend at the time was in cosmetology school. And she had been telling me like, you should be an aesthetician. I was always in theater, in choir, in band, and I was in the color guard. So we always did full makeup and hair. And and we were performing. I've always been a performer. So I've always done hair and makeup. So was like, great, let's just like, I'll do, I've done everyone's brows for years anyway. Like, let's go learn how to like do actual brows, not knowing like what aesthetics actually entailed.
00:11:39
Speaker
But in the back of my mind, I was like, you know what? I want to go work in a med spa. I want to do like the chemical peels and microneedling laser. I want to do all that stuff. So I went through school, um, in Texas, licensing is a little bit different. So it was 750 hours at the time. It was great. I got into the field and then I started working in a Aveda spa and I loved it. It was so fun. Um, but that first six months of being licensed and in an actual spa, i barely had a clientele.
00:12:10
Speaker
And so I was just pouring into my literature and books, learning about everything um and learning about my skincare ingredients and learning about the different products that Aveda used, even if I didn't use them, just so I could be a better retailer as well. So really i was just out in the front learning and then selling products. And then the girl whose spot I took at that spa called me and she's like Hey, I need to hire another esthetician at this spa that I'm at. Do you want to come to this one? And I was like, yeah.
00:12:41
Speaker
And so I went and like day one, I was completely booked. They threw me in. But it was incredible. It was such a fun experience. um My esthetician friend in Texas, we're still friends. I will still go get facials from her if I can make it happen when I'm in town. um I learned so much from her. And back then, like we didn't have mentors, like we didn't even have really community over competition. Like everyone was so in that scarcity mindset and there wasn't that social media because I went to school in 2011. So I've been doing this for quite some time. And so it's just evolved so much over the years.
00:13:19
Speaker
Um, but I worked there with her for years and then I worked at a store called blue mercury, which is like retail makeup. and that was a lot of fun, but it had a little treatment room in the back. So i started building up that side of that business. And then my parents moved here to Utah. My brother moved to Utah. And then I was like, why am I here?
00:13:40
Speaker
Like I have my best friends, which is great. But i was like, I need my family. And like my mom, I wanted to be around my mom in her older age. And I was just like, let's go. So my brother came back, moved me up here. I immediately signed up to get my aesthetic license here in Utah.
00:13:57
Speaker
And then I realized that, uh, uh, hours were a little different. And instead of going back and like lining up all my hours and being grandfathered in because of how much time I've been in the industry, i was like, let's just go back to master aesthetic school.

Balancing Multiple Roles and Building Clientele

00:14:11
Speaker
I was like, I never learned microneedling. It wasn't a thing. Never learned dermaplaning. Wasn't a thing. Lash lifts, lash extensions. Like I just wanted to see what else was out there. And with Aveda, you don't use a ton of chemicals because it's all plant-based. And so I was like, well, I haven't touched a chemical peel in years. So I went back to school, went 600 hours, got my master aesthetic license. And then i became really close with my teacher. And then the owner of the school asked me to teach. So I was teaching the makeup course for a little bit. But then I became spa manager. And so then I was helping the girls in the spa.
00:14:50
Speaker
And then I saw them working on clients. And I was like, I just really miss being in a treatment room. Like, I think that's where my heart is, is here in the treatment room. So I was like, you know what? I was like, let's, let's go look for a job.
00:15:04
Speaker
And I was working at the school, but I was also working at Apple at the time. Like i was just kind of everywhere. And finally I was like, you know what? Like, I really want to work in a day spa. So I remembered when we did like,
00:15:16
Speaker
and remember in school and we do like pretend interviews and like spa owners come and interview you. One lady was like, hey, when you're ready, like you have a job, just give me, just call me. And so I called her. I was like, hey, so I'm ready.
00:15:28
Speaker
And so I literally started like two weeks later and it was so fun. And that's where I met Jessica. I worked at the spa and we did so much Eminence. I loved it so much, but it helped me build a lot on my skills because Eminence does teach a ton of like massage.
00:15:46
Speaker
And that's my thing. I'm so massage forward. That's why clients find me and love me and stay with me is because i call it like fairy hands when people are really light to the touch. And I have always been heavy-handed like my mom called me manhands when I was younger because I would literally massage her whole back at like the age of six so I've always been very in tune with healing and touch so it just made sense not to be in the medical side of things and just stick with the holistic side of things and that's where I've been ever since and then as Jessica said in 2020 like obviously we closed down
00:16:22
Speaker
And we all had time to kind of like think about what we're doing. Like I was like, Oh, I'm excited to get back in the treatment room. But my husband owns his own business. And he's like, why don't you just start your own? And I was like, Oh, well never really been like on my radar. I've never really wanted to do that.
00:16:39
Speaker
And so I came home one day and he had literally started me a business. He did the IRS stuff. He had like, he had did all, and he wasn't even my husband yet. He was my boyfriend. Like,
00:16:51
Speaker
ah um So we were engaged, i guess, a little bit later, it just was like, here, here's all the stuff to do what you need. If you want to do it, if you don't want to do it, it's fine. And then we made, you know, an EIN number. And like, then I got my business name and it just kind of started from there. um And I rented a little tiny room. I left the spa that I was working at. Because I really just wanted to focus on building my clients. But I knew I needed a part-time job. I was like this like little building my clientele. I can't do it on my own. Like I need a part-time job to be able to support myself. So that I'm still afloat.
00:17:32
Speaker
Because I feel like a lot of estheticians kind of fall. and they're like throwing all of their energy into building their business. But then losing that momentum. Because they're not making money other places. And so I was a manager at a boxing gym.
00:17:45
Speaker
And I went and managed at the boxing gym. I started, I would be there at 4.30 in the morning to get like the new trials and meet new clients that came in. um My husband would work out there as well. And so I would get people signed up at the gym and then I would leave there at eight, go to my spa at nine, start working on clients nine to three.
00:18:06
Speaker
and then I come back to the gym for the nighttime classes. So I work four to eight. And then sometimes I'd have people be like, hey, can you do an eyebrow wax tonight? And I'd be like, can you do 8.30 PM?
00:18:16
Speaker
So I would literally go to my spa, do a quick eyebrow wax and then go home. But it was so nice because I didn't have any kids at the time, of course. And my husband was also an entrepreneur. So it was just easy because he was like, get it, girl, like just do it.
00:18:30
Speaker
So I had so much support around me, but I put a lot of energy into this business and it's just really flourished from there. It's been incredible. Oh my gosh, I love it. I forgot about the boxing portion because we started boxing at the same time. ah i actually started boxing when I was 19. So I've boxed pretty much my entire adult life. um But that gym, when I moved here to Texas, I had went to that gym's location or here to Utah. And I went to that gym's location somewhere else. But then when I moved in with my husband, I was like, there's not one around here. Like i can't. And then they opened one.
00:19:09
Speaker
literally January 2020, or February 2020. And then they had to close on my birthday in March because of COVID. But yeah, I was a boxing manager. I loved it. I still love boxing. It's so it's so great. But yeah, it really helped to me talk to people, obviously about like wellness and like health, but then you bring in skincare because everyone's sweaty and you know, they're like, my skin's freaking out and working out more and eating healthier. Now I'm purging. So it really like kind of mingled everything together. And I built my clientele starting from that.
00:19:46
Speaker
So i don't see this, like just this, these last like less than 10 minutes of hearing your story, this ever being a problem for you, but I do want to connect it with our listeners who have a hard time putting themselves out there. So like say it in your role at the gym, you were able to have those conversations naturally and organically with the gym members. How are you able to do that and bring it in and be like, Hey, I'm also an esthetician. And yeah, let's talk about your skin and Oh, you need a brow wax. Like how did does that just come naturally you or? So it does come naturally to me, but I was so lucky that the owner of the gym would be like, this is Nicole, but she's also an esthetician. Like we, they there was always that support around me or my husband would be like, oh, well my wife, she does this. And like, and so
00:20:33
Speaker
Because my husband was already always talking about his business. It was great. And then the owners let us put up our cards on like this magnetic board. If you owned a business or if you did things so that people could come and find like their community to see like who they needed to see. So it made it really easy. um i do feel like it comes easy to me. Like if you find me in a bar, like I'll probably start talking to you about skin, about what I do. Like it's just, it's always a topic.
00:20:59
Speaker
I love that so much. So actually it's really your support system and aligning with like people that are supportive and then too, it's just coming kind of naturally and not being afraid to talk about it.
00:21:10
Speaker
And do you feel like your, how you built your clientele in your business now really did stem from your time in the gym? Like that's really what. It definitely gave me that opportunity because I really only worked being the gym manager. I wasn't working the entire day, like an eight to five, like a normal job. So it gave me a lot of time to help build through social media and then seeing how they were marketing. I would kind of use that and see like, oh, well, this worked for them. I'll try it for me. Or this didn't work.
00:21:41
Speaker
Maybe it will work in the beauty industry type of thing. So kind of like just used it to my advantage to learn from how they were marketing and how I could do it myself. I joined tons of networking groups at the time. I just had a really big support system, but I put myself in the situations to make a support system. I didn't wait till they came to me. um But I'm just very much that person.
00:22:05
Speaker
I'm just very much like, this is me. If you're not going to talk about me, like I'm going to talk about myself. Like it's going to happen. You're going to find me. I love that so much. It's very inspiring. um So, okay. Did you finish nursing school or no?
00:22:22
Speaker
Oh, no. i didn't even get like, I don't even have an associates. It's fine. Yeah. It is fine. Because I was in aesthetic school and community college doing classes at the same time. I was doing online classes. And then finally the next semester came and I was like, why am I doing this?
00:22:40
Speaker
Like, I'm like, let me just do aesthetics and just see where this takes me. and then we'll come back. And so when I moved to Utah, I was like, I went and took all the tests to like go to community college here. And I was like, but why? Like, I already know where I'm supposed to be. What am I trying to do?
00:22:56
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. You know what I'm like loving about you is your openness and you don't overthink things. mean, maybe I am the biggest overthinker. Are you really? It does not sound like it. It sounds like you're like, oh, well, my family's in Utah, so I'm going to go to Utah. Or like, oh, nursing's not for me, so I'm going to try this and whatever. So even if you are an overthinker, like at least you have that openness still. Like you're still willing to be open to You know, I try. You're an action. with theres Yeah, definitely an action taker. I feel like I've always been that way. It might take me a little bit to get there. yeah Because there's always that little like anxiety in your head. Like, where that's not gonna work. That's gonna fail, like whatever. but it's like, shut up. Like, I can figure this out type of thing. And I guess I've always kind of been like that. But I'm still growing into that person. Yeah.
00:23:47
Speaker
yeah Oh, I don't know. I think you should just claim it because I feel like it's oozing off of you. but Yeah. Yeah. It's amazing. It's inspiring. It really is like super, super inspiring to hear that entire story and how everything played out. And thank you so much for sharing that. yes Yeah. Thank you.
00:24:06
Speaker
Um, tell us what does your husband do? What's his business and how has that helped like shape your, obviously it's definitely helped lead your

Personal Life and Business Influence

00:24:14
Speaker
business. Yeah. Definitely. It definitely inspired me and kind of my husband has had like he has that entrepreneurial spirit. He's had a computer building company. He had a supplement company for a long time. And that's what started his company is he was in the supplement field and he was going to all of the sitcoms and things like that.
00:24:33
Speaker
but people were messing up his ah merch. So he's a printer. So he just started by making his own shirts, making his own sweatshirts with like a silhouette in his living room. Now he's got 15 employees. He does embroidery. He does banners. He does clothes. He does so much.
00:24:51
Speaker
He's just a really big printing company here in mar Utah. And he does an incredible job. And he is such a go-getter. And he is just like a problem solver. So i think us together really, i can like bounce things off of him and we can kind of figure it out. um But yeah, his business has definitely helped me be more confident in my business.
00:25:12
Speaker
why And you always have cute merch for your business. Like you're really, I'm literally wearing it. It's just my light behind me. so cute Well, relationships are really important and it sounds like he's definitely somebody who just allows you to be in your power and he's so encouraging and he's so supportive. And so that's something to be super grateful for.
00:25:38
Speaker
Always. I'm so grateful for him. He's always been that way. He's like, this girl's crazy, but I love her. So like, just listen to her type of thing, which I love.
00:25:48
Speaker
ah My parents have always been super supportive, my family. So it's been really great. And and I know other estheticians are like, well, my family doesn't come and like physically support me. They don't get facial scent and stuff. And I'm like, my family doesn't get a ton of facials and stuff either. But like, if they're in a room and someone asks about an esthetician, they're going to talk about me, which is nice. Yes. Yeah. It's something to really remember. I think for all of us, like support looks different and it doesn't have to just look one one way.
00:26:17
Speaker
Exactly. oh I love that. Tell us a little bit more like about you and like what you like to do for in your free time or for self-care. I mean, obviously trash TV this entire weekend, Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, has been on me and my best friend's screen. i literally started rewatching episodes last night because like, listen, we were talking and playing with the baby. Like, didn't catch everything. Start over. ah Yeah. Yeah, I'll watch Gilmore Girls every fall. Like I love just like sitting under a minky blanket and just enjoying TV. But I'm that kind of person that I like to be in a quiet space. I need that like me time to like recharge because we touch so many people. We have so much energy coming through our bodies every day with what we do and what we come across in. And I'm just like, okay, I need a minute type of thing. So watching love watching my TV. I talked about boxing. I'm obviously a new mom. So trying to find that balance. I mean, he's almost, I mean, he's 20 months old, but I feel like I just started finding my footing this summer um with him because he sucks at sleeping. Like I'm going to be completely honest. Like he's got FOMO. He wants to just be up and running all the time. And I'm like, you're just like your dad because that's not who I am as a person. Like I need to chill. Yeah.
00:27:33
Speaker
So it's just, it's been interesting trying to find my putting in balance, but I love working out. i really do. i was a dancer for 15 years. So it's like, I have to move my body. And I know that's a way for me to like release energy, obviously, but like, it just feels better. So trying to find my back into the gym, you guys were talking about going to the gym. Like I literally am planning on going to the gym after this podcast. yeah So text me later to make sure I did it. Um, Because I'm like, I have to get back into the swing of it, especially winter. You know, we just want to like sit at home, but I'm excited to like get back into it and start it again. Cause I've taken a few weeks off. Um, but I love doing that. We go boating in the summer. We love to go up into Heber and go boating. my husband's a big hiker. He loves hiking. So now that we have Jack, um, I think we're just going like strap into his back, not mine. I'm not carrying a child up a mountain.
00:28:31
Speaker
Um, and try to start hiking again, biking and just getting outside and kind of like finding us again. and just finding the things that I love to do again. Like i I was listening to an episode y'all were talking about like coloring. Oh my God. I love coloring like so much and like reading. and so just like finding those little times to do that that kind of stuff. And of course, just like sitting with my friends and doing nothing.
00:28:56
Speaker
I love that so much. Um, do you find that like you've had to rearrange your schedule since becoming a mom um and your dream room schedule and fitting in your, your boundaries around your personal time? Like walk us through that. How's that looked for you?
00:29:12
Speaker
Absolutely. i mean, you can ask my my clients are incredible. They change so much as I change with me. And they'll be like, I can try to make something work so you can be home with your baby. Like they're so great. um But I do love working. I love what I do. So trying to find the balance of loving to be home with your family, but then also loving what you do is hard. I never thought ah like my mom was kind of a stay at home mom. She had like little jobs here and there, but like we always had mom. And so I'm like, well, I want to give that to my kid, but I love working as well. So I'm sure Tiffany, you know, like it's such a hard balance to find. And obviously I'm still new to it. But when I came back, I took 25 weeks off of aesthetics. So my business, I took like, i i was so lucky. As soon as we found out we were pregnant, I started saving money. And I tell girls that all the time, like I use Square. i immediately started putting a percentage into a savings account. And I'm just lucky that I was at a point where I was booked solid and had wait lists for months on end. And so that I had that income coming in to help support me so that when I had my baby, i could take that time off to enjoy to still pay all my bills and everything without having my husband to like up his, you know, his pay and everything like that.
00:30:33
Speaker
Um, so that was nice. And that was the boundary that I was like, I'll take a few clients in the last like 12 weeks of that 25. But like, I really did take a really long time off. And I, I'm so thankful that I could do that.
00:30:46
Speaker
Um, and then I came back like a few days a week. And then last fall, I started kind of full time again. we had a lot of help. My mom would come and watch ah Jack and then my aunt would watch Jack.
00:30:59
Speaker
And it just made it a little bit easier for me to go see some clients. And I'm working right now, to Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. and I just last month started adding a few Sundays, like maybe one Sunday a month. I'll just throw it in randomly um because I'm just realizing that I want to be home for dinner time. I want to be home for bath time. Mm-hmm.
00:31:22
Speaker
And I, for some reason, like that just is important to me. So I'm trying to figure it out still where I'm landing, but I don't mind working on a Sunday. Like I love it in the summertime. It'll be Saturdays just because we vote on Sundays, but my clients are pretty flexible. The ones that have been with me all like five years I've been in business. So it's it's, it's a hard boundary to do to be like, okay, yeah, I'll see you at 530 instead of being like, Hey, I actually only worked till five that day. Um, through the rest of this year, I still have clients that are coming in till seven. And I told myself like, you're out of there by six, but I'm not, it's fine. We'll figure it out. So it's just, it's a learning curve. It's a journey and we're just in it and figuring it out as we go.
00:32:07
Speaker
Um, you're so smart. And i'm like, so curious, like, I don't think most estheticians can even look far enough ahead, even ones that are planning to have a baby and take maternity leave to be like, I'm going to start saving now and put that money inside

Maintaining Client Relationships and Community Support

00:32:22
Speaker
an account. So I can very intentionally step away from my business. And on top of that, talk us through like, cause I think a lot of estheticians get into this scarcity mindset of like, If I leave and take 25 weeks of maternity leave, my my clients are going to leave me and find somebody else. So how did that look for you? And how did you lock into really that boundary of taking that time off?
00:32:45
Speaker
So it was terrifying, to be honest, like inside, like I'm a little duck on the top of the water, but my feet are scurrying the entire time. But I literally gave my clients a list of estheticians. And I said, I love these girls. These are the girls that I think you would get a similar experience to. I feel like you would enjoy your time with them, but you need to come back to me. And so um none of my esthetician, none of my clients went and saw any of that.
00:33:15
Speaker
They didn't? They waited 25 weeks? They waited so long. They kept buying their products. So after a month, I started taking orders again and doing products. um When I initially left and then over the summer, I made little like facial kits and I used Sorella products at the time I was using. So they had really good sample sizes. And so I put together cleanser, moisturizer, exfoliant, mask, and just like a little at-home facial kit type thing. And I saw so many of those right before I had the baby. And so people would save them and use them like every couple months.
00:33:49
Speaker
um And yeah, none of my client, they were like, yeah, I totally look at their page. But then I just was like, I'll just save money and I'll just use it when I see you again. And I was like, That's so cool. And it's not like it's going to happen every time. And coming back after maternity leave, like people had to start going back to work. Even in 2024, they would have been working remotely for so long. Like now they're a little bit more hybrid. And so like schedule changes, I've definitely lost clients, but not because like I wasn't there for 25 weeks. It was just because of their schedule changes and then my schedule with a new baby. So we've all, I still have clients that still buy products for me that haven't seen me in new years.
00:34:32
Speaker
So it's been really great that I can still help them on their journey of skin and just that self-care in a way um without them being in my treatment room. And of course I'd love to see them, but if we both can't make it happen, like our, our times will cross again and it'll be great.
00:34:48
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. so much trust. How, where did your community over competition mindset come from? Like, do you think that came from your time at school or where? no. no Okay. So I feel like when you first started in 2011, when I first started back then, I think there were like seven girls in the aesthetic class and,
00:35:10
Speaker
we were all just so close. It was such a good class, but then you like go back and you go into the field and it wasn't a huge thing back then to own your own business. And so trying to build clients and stuff and then not having all that client, it was scary. um i think at my first big spot in Colleyville, when my esthetician friend had hired me on to work with her, i think that was helpful to kind of like, Hey, like, You're working at a spa, you're going to get what you get type of thing, but you build around the people. And that kind of taught me how to build clientele and kind of got me out of the scarcity mindset.
00:35:47
Speaker
But I think it's always been there. Like when I first started my business, um I felt like there was another esthetician that was kind of copying everything I was doing at the time. And I was getting like, honestly, so pissed off about it. And I had a business mentor friend and he was like, she's always a step behind. If she's actually doing what you're doing, like let her, like it's fine. And so it was really hard, but think in the last, so that first year was tough.
00:36:14
Speaker
But I think after that is when my business started flourishing is when I started to let go of that scarcity mindset and just kind of like let the energy, like you get what you put out into the world. And so that's when I started becoming the education ambassador for SkinScript. And that's when I was helping other people online, like figure out protocols and figure out just in the forums. And I was enjoying it because I was like, we're helping each other grow. We're helping each other be better estheticians.
00:36:41
Speaker
And I think just over time, I lost that scarcity mindset. And like right now, community is huge for me. And I love all my esthetician friends. We've got text threads. We've got Instagram ah message group messages. Like I'm in so many of them. And I just like, I don't know where I'd be without them because it's just like a little sounding board. Like I absolutely love it. And now I'm in a place where I'm like, listen, if you can't see me for something, like I want you to go see her.
00:37:08
Speaker
Like, you know, so it's changed a lot over the years. And so when I see people have a scarcity mindset, I don't try to make them feel bad for it because I'm like, I was there. Like, it's okay to feel it that way. You haven't grown into where you need to be to feel more comfortable not having that scarcity mindset. So I try to give them a little bit of grace.
00:37:31
Speaker
And cause I've been there and it's okay. oh my gosh. I love that so much. And it is true. The energy that you put out really does come back to you. And it is an evolution for sure. Um, I love that part about having grace for somebody else who is still maybe in that space too. Um, because it's true. I think we've all been there and, um,
00:37:54
Speaker
And you can kind of, it's so scary. yeah And, um, when you can't like see past the horizon, i mean, it's just like, you're, you're just in this fog in a sense, but then once you can kind of elevate and it's see above the clouds and you're like, Oh, there is so much more out there for all of us.
00:38:11
Speaker
Oh, so cool. Um, okay. What's something most people wouldn't guess about you? I mean, i think right off the bat meeting them, they wouldn't realize that I did box for so long and like am kind of active in that aspect. um I think that's a big thing that they wouldn't like guess about me.
00:38:36
Speaker
And they're always like, I'm sorry, what? You box? And I'm like, yeah, like my dream is to be in a bar fight, but... Wait, but so will you box another person or just like box a punching bag? So I've done both. So I've sparred, I've done Brazilian jujitsu, like I've done MMA, mixed martial arts, but boxing wise, I haven't boxed someone in person yet because trying to find someone in my weight class is to box is and my age because I'm 35. So finding that is hard. And so whenever we have been in like boxing things, it's just like, you can't find that matchup, which is fine. I'm sure there's someone out there and she probably kicked my butt, but I just, I absolutely love it But yeah, I've totally sparred with friends. I've sparred with girls, guys. Like it's just a fun like group when you're in that.
00:39:29
Speaker
Do you have a dream of wanting to like be in the ring with us? Oh, I always dream about wanting to be in the ring. My husband got to be in the ring two years ago, which was really fun to watch.
00:39:40
Speaker
And so I was like, I want to do that. But like, I'd have to be ah so I'd have to like completely change and pretend like I was getting ready for, you know, a bodybuilding competition like Jessica does. Like I would literally have to do that and flip my mindset because I'd have to win or I would be mad.
00:39:59
Speaker
ah so I love it. um Nicole, what's the personal value or belief that guides how you show up in life and business?
00:40:11
Speaker
um To be honest, it's just to be yourself. And it's so hard because you're like, who even am I? Like, I want to be this esthetician. I want to be this person specifically. And I think I have just being myself brings me people that re resonate with me. um I'm very blunt. I'm very matter of the fact. um I kind of curse like a sailor, not to my clients, but it might slip in front of them. And it's like,
00:40:39
Speaker
They love that I am who I am in front of them. And i think that's just really brought the people who love me and who are loyal and who are just incredible people to me is just by being myself. And it's so silly. Like you feel like it's so silly to say, but there are so many people online that are so different than who they are in real life and I'm like wait like why are you acting like that like be yourself I'm seeing other estheticians kind of like come out and start to like show themselves and I'm like yes like that's the girl I knew that was in there type of thing and it's just so fun to watch
00:41:16
Speaker
Well, you know, it's so interesting that you say that because I was going to ask you ah obviously your client retention is insane. You know, if they weren't going other places for 25 weeks, they're obsessed with you. They love you. They don't want to see anyone else, even though you're like, hey, go see, you know, so-and-so. Yeah, I literally give them a list. I think that probably, and you tell me, like your authenticity is so magnetic, even just having this conversation with you.
00:41:44
Speaker
like, this is why i fell in love with her. This is why, and you know, we were so connected. um that authenticity draws in the clients that are meant for us. do you also feel like your authenticity is why your retention is also as good as it is? Or like, what would you attribute your amazing retention to?
00:42:08
Speaker
I would say absolutely, because you don't want to be around someone who is going to act different every time you're around them. You don't really know what to expect, but you can't also connect with them. yeah um So absolutely. i think it's the authenticity. um But i think for a long time, i was one of the only estheticians around here that focused a lot on that facial massage and was super heavy handed and like really put everything into it And now it's finally growing. Like I'm seeing more people like taking massage classes and things like that. But I think for a while, like that's what people, they were like, Oh, this is what a facial is. Like my clients get undressed for facials. They're not just laying on the table. um They're not in their clothes, just just the experience. I kind of bring a day spa experience.
00:42:52
Speaker
And I think that's kind of what drew them to it is they don't have to go to a big day spa to get that experience that they're looking for. And I really think that's what originally i built most of my clients on word of mouth from my other clients, which has been incredible. I didn't pay for ads for a really, really long time until I was right like, I did a few Instagram ads, I think, but they really never brought that many people into me. Versus when people be like, oh yeah, my friend, she told me about you or this. And like, that has been what has really built my business is just that word of mouth.
00:43:31
Speaker
I love to hear that. We love to hear that because we're really big on taking focus off of social media. Like we'll help you if you want help with social media, don't get us wrong. But we firmly believe in word of mouth and Google being absolute king for growing your business. And so we love to hear that. Now, another thing that you just mentioned is connection.
00:43:55
Speaker
And I think that authenticity and that connection is truly what people are looking for these days, you know? And so you can't connect with somebody unless you're being your true authentic self and, and more of us are spent. So sorry to go off on a tangent here, but, um, um,
00:44:17
Speaker
The ah ah economy situation that people love to like say that there's something wrong with the economy. We love to pretend that there isn't because um basically people are still spending money, but they're spending money where they see the value. And I feel like part of that value is the connection.
00:44:35
Speaker
Wouldn't you guys agree? I'm like, if they feel really connected with you and like your relationship with these people is just so good and so solid because you're so authentic and you are so good at what you do they will continue spending their money with you. So I feel like it's just another one of the, the authenticity bleeds into the connection and the retention and the value that they find in you. And so i love that you said that because I feel like we really can't emphasize that enough.
00:45:06
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. And I think that over the years, when you work for someone else, it's different when you're building that connection because you are building a connection to clients, but it still feels so different. So once I went out on my own, you know, you have to make a connection or else it's not going to happen for you. So it really, it just helped me grow and build that.
00:45:29
Speaker
Yeah. Well, it probably also, again, it helps with that community over competition because you come from this grounded space of understanding that nobody else can be you. They're them. And we encourage that and we love that and we praise that and we want to nurture that and other people. But we also, when we're being authentic, we can really stand in our own power that way. And just knowing that what we have to offer is unique to us.
00:45:56
Speaker
So how could there be competition? Exactly. And the cool thing is, is like with connection, i connected or you know, networked. um Before I started, i started going to this protein shake shop and she, me and the, one of the owners were just like really close friends, started getting closer and closer. we built that connection.
00:46:19
Speaker
She would not shut up talking about me. I would have people come in all the time and they'd be like, oh, Celeste told me this. Oh, Celeste told me to come here. And she helped me build my business as she was building her own business. And then I would send people to her. And it was just such a cool like synergy that we had. And like i so she's one of my best friends. like I am so thankful for her because we were both growing at the same time. But she found that time to talk about my business within her own. So it's like you want to make connections with your clients. But you want to also want to make connections with other people that necessarily aren't in your industry. But that like love what you do so that they send them your way and so that you can build that relationship.
00:47:03
Speaker
yeah What's cool about Utah is like, you guys are the leaders in networking and that, that connection, like you're talking about, like like kind of the influencer, you know, realm and like the conferences that come out of Utah. And I think all of us can like look to Utah for inspiration on that. Cause I really do feel like Utah takes the lead role in that networking and that connection and just like collaboration with other people. And it's just like, you know, I'll pat your back, you pat mine type of energy. I love it.
00:47:34
Speaker
Yeah, it's not really cool. It is really cool. Well, we've answered a lot of questions that I had for you. So I think another question that I would just add to this mix is, um,
00:47:49
Speaker
one thing that you had mentioned in a post is being a six figure esthetician. So can you tell us more about that and then also what that means to you beyond just that like number?

Achieving Business Success and Managing Burnout

00:48:05
Speaker
Yeah. So, I mean, the first time i hit over $100,000 in my treatment room was probably, and want to say it was 2022.
00:48:20
Speaker
And I didn't even know it happened because I am the worst. I'm not looking at my numbers. Like I am just working, doing my thing. Like, is there enough money to pay for this, for these products? Great. Perfect. um So I'm still learning on how to like figure all that. But when I first hit it, I like told my husband, I was like, dude, i think i just I think I just hit six figures in my business. And he's like, oh, yeah, like I think you did that a while ago. And I was like, oh. And so I'm sitting there and I'm like, how...
00:48:52
Speaker
it just felt, it feels like such an accomplishment, but even hitting 30 grand was an accomplishment. Hitting 50 grand is an an accomplishment. Like there's always, of everybody goes into this industry thinking they're going to be a six figure esthetician. Nobody realizing how much work you have to put in behind it and how much you have to to give up in your day-to-day life to get to that situation. like It's been incredible. i love it.
00:49:19
Speaker
ah But we gave up a lot of vacations. We gave up a lot of time. Like I would miss a baby shower because I'd be working and forget to schedule it out, like move my clients type of thing. So finding the balance to get there to hit six figures was it was a hard thing to learn. i became pregnant ah in 2023 of June. And by October, I was already booked out for the entire year. And I was exhausted, like working these hours, 10 to 12 hour days, clients after clients, six to seven facials a day. And I was like, six figures is so nice.
00:49:58
Speaker
Obviously not bringing home six figures. Like, I think that's where other people kind of yeah like get confused. um But I was like, my business brought in six figures, but I'm tired.
00:50:09
Speaker
yeah And so trying to find that balance. So of course I gave birth, didn't hit six figures that year, but this year I've already hit six figures. And it's just been so nice knowing that even though I've put up less hours, a few more boundaries in my schedule, I still hit that. It just, to me is that doing it again without being so exhausted, being at work and being excited to come to work. Not that I wasn't, but it's like, you I'm not tired at all. Like I absolutely love being here. It's just an accomplishment like mentally for me. I think that it's like I wasn't even worried about it. And then all of a sudden it happened again. And I was like, oh, but I'm in such a better place mentally for this.
00:50:52
Speaker
So it's it's hard and I see girls all the time and i I feel so, I'm like, guys, like the goal is to be happy. Obviously we're here to make money. Like we are here to make money, of course, but I want to make money doing what I love and enjoying to do it. I've been doing this for 14 years. Like we we've been burned out. Like we the burnout is real. And if you're already pushing to hit like six figures and you're in year two and you're not even hitting 20,000 for the year. And how could this happen? Like, that's okay. Like enjoy the ride while you're getting there, figure out things that you need to move, go work for a boxing gym, like do what you have to do, but like you have to enjoy the ride getting there or it's not worth it.
00:51:41
Speaker
I'm obsessed. So I, I know, I love it so much, just so much wisdom here because you're, what you're saying is it takes so much like grit and tenacity to really build, you know, your business and like gain this, these financial goals and get here at the same time, you've learned so much about boundaries and about burnout and about what you don't want and how you don't want to feel in your business. And so it's like two, it's very much layered and twofold of like, yes, I have a six figure esthetician and I'm not willing to to do the things that I used to do, you know, in my business.
00:52:23
Speaker
It's so, so true. the goal The goal is to create this beautiful life that our business fits inside of, not the other way around. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. And the goal, like you said, is to be happy. Like I just got chills when you said that, you know, why build this business if you just end up being burned out by it? And we all get there. Like, yeahp we all struggle with it, you know, but I think that once we do,
00:52:47
Speaker
Once we get to that point, it's so important to take a step back. Look, you know, you had a baby, so you kind of had to, but you have to take a step back and reanalyze, you know, what you really want. So one of my questions for you is, do you feel like you could actually now potentially make even more money having more boundaries and feeling better? Because ah clearly you believe in energy, ah right? Like you made that pretty clear at this point.
00:53:15
Speaker
is Do you believe that that is true? Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. i mean, I just feel like having more boundaries and having hard no's Builds you into more confident ah entrepreneur, more confident esthetician. Like I talk about all the time how I had this client that ah she would come like 30 minutes late to a brow wax. And I'm like, girl, your brow wax is over. Like I can't get you in. Or so I would start putting her, button her up to my lunch break. but then she'd be into my time. And at first when I was building my clients, it didn't matter. I was like, it's fine. and i'll eat the rest of my sandwich later. Like we'll figure it out. And so I do that. And she'd want to add on this wax and this wax.
00:54:01
Speaker
And then she would be coming late. And finally I was just like, Why am I doing that? Like, that's not fair to me. It's not hurting any of my other clients, but it's hurting me. And like, that's not fair. i wouldn't let anybody else do that to me in my life in any other situation.
00:54:18
Speaker
So I finally, she was, i told her, I was like, if you are more than five minutes late this time, I'm not seeing you today. She came 13 minutes late. I had already shut my door and started eating my lunch, doing my thing. She was knocking on my door, banging on my door, calling me, texting me to let her in.
00:54:36
Speaker
And i just took ignored her for my entire lunch break. And then I finally called her back or texted her back. And I was like Hey, like, this is not working for us. You need to go somewhere that takes walk-ins because your time just doesn't work with my time. And she'll still once a year message me, Hey, I tried to make an appointment online. I'm like, girl, you're blocked.
00:54:55
Speaker
Like you're blocked from making an appointment online because you don't respect my boundaries and my time. Why should I give up that to do $20 brow wax? Like it's not worth it. And then for me to be pissed off the rest of my day, you know? So i feel like doing little things like that has made me grown pushed me into being more of a successful esthetician. Um, I'm not the kind of person I'm sure y'all can tell that's gonna let someone walk all over them. But I do have a soft spot. And I do like, want people, you know, to feel beautiful to feel wanted and all of that. But it's like, at what cost? Yeah.
00:55:34
Speaker
So true. Yeah, it's beautiful. And I think people really need to hear that. So, you know, i think there is more success to be had when our nervous system is regulated, when we're happy, when we have boundaries, you know, and we're being treated well, we're treating other people well.
00:55:51
Speaker
um And it is a very energetic thing. So it's it's really, really inspiring to hear you say that. And I think it's something that we all need to hear and be reminded of all the time.
00:56:02
Speaker
So thank you for saying that and also just being such a great example of that. Thank you. You're welcome. ah Nicole, do you have have a team or are you a solo esthetician?
00:56:13
Speaker
I'm solo. Solo. What is that like? we're going to stay there. I mean, i will never say that because I never, i always said I would never start a business, but here we are, you know? um so I've been like thinking about hiring on for an esthetician, but i want to be at a spot that I know i can pay someone fairly that I'm still being paid fairly and I'm not losing money just to make sure someone else is being paid. And I want to make sure that my treatments and everything are exactly the same as if I'm giving it is if someone else is giving it, of course, they'll put their own flair on it. But I want to make sure that the quality is there.
00:56:55
Speaker
And I'll be honest, like I'm super picky. And so I don't want to put anybody in a situation where they just don't feel good enough, or they don't feel heard because of my expectations. So I'm trying to like,
00:57:08
Speaker
figure myself out and how I would be a leader in that aspect. um I am good on my own right now, but I know i can see in the future, like with having it maybe another kid in the future, my child doing sports and things like that. Like I could see it happening where I'd want to have someone else stepping in. so it's definitely a possibility and always will be It's just not in the cards right now.
00:57:35
Speaker
Yeah. I love that. I love that you're open to it and kind of still can like see it either way, but like, yeah, just letting it unfold how it's supposed to and having a very clear vision of how you want it to look if, and when it happens, I think that's key. um I love that.
00:57:53
Speaker
How has your marketing or social media strategy evolved as your business has grown? I think I've just found my voice a little bit more um on social media. I would say that I am not someone that has like a structure. Like I have to post this many times a week. I need to do this. Like i post when I want to now that I am at this point in my career. i post when I want to. I post what I want to post. I'm not strict on my...
00:58:26
Speaker
what my feed looks like, like my grid. I'm not strict on that. Like like if I'm going to post something that's completely out of my colors of my Instagram, um I don't care. I'll do it.
00:58:37
Speaker
So I'm just kind of like, I'll post what I want to post when I want to post. But that's the evolution is that I don't feel like I'm so stressed about my social media and what's showing up on there.
00:58:49
Speaker
Did you feel like in maybe the beginning that you did feel that pressure? Oh, yeah. I absolutely felt like I had to post multiple times every day in my stories so people would see me on their algorithm. I felt like in my feed, like I always had to be posting once a day at least. I was like, I better educate people on this, blah, blah, blah. And then I'm like, I'm educating my clients in the treatment room. I'm educating clients so many places. is Like, if I don't feel like educating today, I'm not going to Where do you think that shift came from, though?
00:59:20
Speaker
Just like you were... how oh you I think that when I got super busy, it's just like, I had to kind of let go of that side being as crazy as I was. And just realizing like, you need to nurture where that energy currently is.
00:59:38
Speaker
Like I don't need to put that much energy into my social media right now. And if there are people that do like they want to post once a day and post a certain amount of stories every day, like major props to you. I wish I had the time to be that involved in something on that side right now. But it's just it's not the season that I'm in. And that's OK.
00:59:56
Speaker
So I think I just had to like let it go once I got busy. And I'm not as busy as I was two years ago just because of like baby changes, schedule and everything. But I'm okay with where I'm at right now. And I still don't feel like i need to like throw out posts and everything.
01:00:10
Speaker
me I love that so much. i think that that's just such a great reminder for everyone. And again, it goes back to your energy, like girls where you send it. And so if your energy is flowing into your clients and your treatment room time right now, then obviously it's coming back to you. Cause like you said, you've already hit six figures and it's, you know, we're not even at the end of the year and you're working less and you have this like beautiful schedule that you really like right now. And so it's just a true test of Um, what advice would you give other estheticians who are ready to scale or hit their next level?
01:00:43
Speaker
It's just, just like do it. It's so scary. You can write it down all day. You can outline things all day. You can make plans, but until you just jump into it, it's okay if you fail, like it's so scary and it sucks failing and it sucks not being like where you want to be.
01:01:01
Speaker
But you were further than you were yesterday. so just do it. And I think that's like my biggest thing. um But I also think that like I see I teach at a lot of schools with SkinScript and a lot of girls are like, oh, I want to go solo, right? As I go out of school. And I'm like, that's incredible.
01:01:18
Speaker
Let me tell you how my story started. I worked in spas for eight years and I feel like that helped me grow into the solo esthetician that I am. i was like, you leaving school and becoming an esthetician right out the gate, you're still learning how to be an esthetician, but now you have to learn how to build a business.
01:01:34
Speaker
Like that sounds awful. Like that sounds so much harder than knowing who you are at a baseline as an esthetician and then building your business on top of that. I'm not built for that. There are so many people that are. But I think like recognizing who you are and where you're at and just having realistic, realistic expectations is huge. And not worrying about where other people are in their businesses is the biggest thing to me is if you're comparing it's you're never going to be as successful as you think you should be.
01:02:07
Speaker
Yeah, because your energy is on them, not you. Yeah, your eyes are on them. And I think it's like great to give, especially new aestheticians and students, the permission slip to go work for somebody else learn your skills and hone in on everything. I think it's almost like some, some aestheticians get it in their head that that's like, uh, uh, what's the word I'm looking for? Not a failure, but like.
01:02:32
Speaker
they have there, they're a step behind if they go work for somebody else straight out the gate. It's like, actually you're being really smart. Yeah. And you're not putting any of your own money into it. Like that's incredible. Start building your business on the side, like your plans. But I tell people all the time, I'm like, do you even understand how scheduling works? Like before you even start your own business, like that was hard to kind of maneuver and figure out before you knew what you were doing. And then how much money you can spend a month on product while you also paying your bills. Like there's so much that goes into it. And my husband did have his own business. And I still was like, I'm so thankful that I worked for someone else for a little bit um to understand. Well, longer than most people do, but that was a different time. So I can't hold it against anyone for wanting to go out on their own because it's like they see all these successful estheticians who are on their own and they're like, well, that's where I want to be. And I'm like, of course it is. Like that's the goal, but you don't have to be there next month.
01:03:31
Speaker
Yeah. And so just finding who you are And if you start a business and it fails, you, it's not a failure because go work for someone else and start over. Like it's fine. It's okay to start over.
01:03:45
Speaker
Learning to pivot. And that's like, it's just a pivot. It's not a failure. And I don't think there is such a thing as a failure because no matter what, you're either learning something or you're growing from it or that's fair. And you're right. You're, you're one step further ahead than you were yesterday. So.
01:04:00
Speaker
Such solid advice. and So much solid advice. So at Beyond Aesthetics, we talk a lot about personal development and mindset and even spirituality. So if you don't mind, we're just going to dive into that for a few minutes. um What mindset shifts or personal development work have most influenced your own success?
01:04:22
Speaker
I think just I do have a ton of anxiety that I feel can hold me back a lot of the time. And so trying to find like not mindfulness because I'm terrible at mindfulness, like sitting and just thinking like I'm terrible at it. Like in yoga, I'm thinking about something else. Like, you know, like I'm just not that person. And so finding what worked for me. So of course, I talk a ton about energy, about grounding myself during different treatments, after treatments, making sure that I find an outlet to let go of what I'm thinking of is so important to me. So like my spirituality is very much like energy based.
01:05:06
Speaker
Same, same. We love this. Okay. Well, okay. So then that being said, let's actually talk about the grounding practices before and after your treatments. Can you tell us more about that?
01:05:20
Speaker
I mean, so I had, I've had people teach me over the years, like after you're done touching someone, i like wipe off their energy. Like you're actually physically wiping it off and like throwing it in the trash or throwing it into the sink. So it goes down the drain. So that their worries and negativity that could possibly have just transferred while you're doing a facial massage isn't inside of you anymore. Even if you feel good, you'll always see me in the hall just kind of like pushing things off of me while doing a facial. I'm very intentionable ah intentional about keeping my feet on the ground. Um, I like used to put my feet up on my stool and kind of twist and turn, um, on my stool. I always have both feet on the ground now because I want that energy to flow through me, but then back into the earth.
01:06:08
Speaker
And so that's like a little quirk that I do. i have selenite around my treatment room. I've got quartz. I've got so much, um, um, energy going on in here, regardless of you, if you believe in that or not, they're really pretty to look at. But I do ah feel like I just, I feel better having them around me. And so they're always going to be part of my treatment room. Can you just do us a quick favor? think selenite is so necessary for estheticians to have in their treatment room. Can you tell us why and tell us how you have placed it strategically?
01:06:45
Speaker
Give me a sec. Okay. Okay. so i i have a witchy woo woo friend. Her name is Nikki. And we call her Auntie Woo for Jack.
01:06:56
Speaker
But when I first opened my business, she gave me this giant ball of selenite. And so this is right where my clients get dressed. So I placed this giant one. i used to place it underneath my treatment room table, but then I felt like I want people to be able to see it. Like I want them to feel that energy. Selenite to me is very cleansing. And then your other crystals, know,
01:07:22
Speaker
Definitely like work off of it. Like they work together and synergistically. So selenite is a huge one around me. I have amethyst. I have rose quartz so that people can just be surrounded by self-love, remembering themselves. And that's why they're here. They chose themselves.
01:07:39
Speaker
And I feel like that's so important to continue to remind themselves, like that was a choice that you made for your own self-care. and it's incredible. Like what we do for me is so much more than skin health. It's all over wellness. And i can have the most stressful anxiety anxiety filled of morning. When I walk into my treatment room, I just feel peace. Once I start talking and touching my clients, I'm,
01:08:04
Speaker
yeah I'm just so much better. i'm more at peace within myself. And I feel like having these little things around my treatment room helps a ton. um But I literally i like everywhere you would look, you could see something.
01:08:19
Speaker
I love it. Yeah, I love it so much. Thank you for sharing that. I i wish more estheticians would. um And I think a lot do, but like learn a little bit more about the the grounding practices. and And we've done episodes on that too. And even just having strategic

Energy Management and Personal Well-being

01:08:36
Speaker
crystals around. And I always wear um obsidian, you know, to try to just like block as much energy as possible, like block any negative energy in a room, you know, from coming at me a little bit too much. And that helps keep me like super grounded and just... You know, from over absorbing other people's energy. So there's a lot of power in, in those types of practices and just how you have the the energy of your room set up. So thank you so much for sharing that.
01:09:01
Speaker
Have you worked with any coaches or mentors or done a specific program that's impacted your journey? Um, so I, my husband has a business mentor. And so I've actually worked with him for a few months when I was kind of deciding, um scaling while I was getting really busy, like what I wanted to do, what I wanted to purchase, things like that. And I think just having him to bounce off ideas with, he's super positive. He's super, uh, will help you think things through. So just having him,
01:09:36
Speaker
to talk to every week was just really nice. Even though he's not in the industry at all, there's just something about him that just inspires you and drives you to be better than you were yesterday. and so I loved working with him He's our really close friend. So I can always just text him and be like, okay, what, what am I doing? And he'll just like, help me think about it. So I've worked with him.
01:09:59
Speaker
um i don't think I've taken seriously, any other mentor, like I've taken little classes here and there that are free or whatever. um i felt like I found a lot are a little bit more basic um for like newer estheticians that are kind of becoming. And I was always looking for something that was just a little bit more in depth. So I haven't necessarily taken tons of mentoring classes, but I feel like I still learn from just the people around me. Because of that community over competition and finding your estheticians, I feel like you learn so much from them too. i feel like it's important to know when you need to jump in and grab a mentor or someone that's going to help coach you Because I do feel like everybody needs someone like that at some point in their career. and I'm sure in the future, I'm going to need someone again. But right now I can kind of lean on my esthetician friends and beauty industry friends to kind of get to where I'm going.
01:10:57
Speaker
That's really beautiful, actually. Yeah, we love to hear that. How do you handle self-doubt, comparison, or burnout when they do show up for you? Well, I cry a lot. And then...
01:11:14
Speaker
And then I just get up and remind myself, like, you're still a bad bitch. It's fine. You're gonna be great. um But I definitely will sit in my feelings. I'll wallow for a little bit. It's fine.
01:11:29
Speaker
And you then you just have to pick yourselves up and you just have to go do it. Um, so yeah, I find that it'll hit you every now and then the burnout is real. Um, there were days where i would come in on three hours of sleep with my new baby and it would be really tough, but you know, a little bit of an energy drink and a lot of bit of just hopes and dreams really pushed me through.
01:11:53
Speaker
but but ah what is your favorite Alani flavor, by the way? um I mean of all time I've been loving the sherbert swirl it came out last year but like obsessed with it right now I'm drinking OG well not OG but like cosmic stardust love this one um I'm really not a hater unless it's peach so oh you don't like the peach I don't like interesting okay i like the I'll drink it I'm not gonna not drink it but it's not my favorite I love it. The sherbet one's hard to find. Whenever I find it, I stock up.
01:12:31
Speaker
yeah In fact, I have some in my fridge and I'm like, don't drink it. You might, you like, you got to save it for a special day. Cause it's like, it's becoming an all the time flavor in 2026 though. So it's going to be around. Thank freaking goodness. and there's some Cotton candy.
01:12:45
Speaker
There's a holiday flavor that I saw on Instagram. What is it? um I think it's got more cranberry in it. It's called like winter wonderland last year. Sometimes it tasted like chapstick. Sometimes it tasted like a candle. but This year's was so much better. So I've been liking it. I probably like wouldn't buy a full case of it. Really? But I'm still going to buy one or two every time I go to Target and drink it. Obviously. Obviously. Are you a, did you, do you love Witch's Brew?
01:13:17
Speaker
Oh, loved the witch's brew. So good. So good. I think I still have some of those in the fridge too. I still have half a case. One of my esthetician friends, actually, she's like, I can't drink these anymore postpartum. Do you want this box? And I was like, yeah. yeah I love it. i love it. And I love that Tiff, I'll have to show you, but in one of her branding photos, she's, um you know how in ours we were like,
01:13:41
Speaker
With the champagne and the cute thing. She's doing it with Alani. I love it. Yes, I love it because I love Alani too. It is absolutely my go-to energy drink because they're just freaking delicious. Tiff, do you like Alani? I cannot relate. I don't like Alani at all. love it.
01:14:00
Speaker
I just love energy drinks. But Ohlani is definitely my favorite in the last few years. But Ghosts, have you ever had Ghosts? I have not. They have a grape. It's literally Welch's Concord grape flavored. Oh my God. It's so good. so I'm dabbling a little bit in that, but I tried like a bloom the other day. Hated it. I was like, it doesn't taste toxic enough.
01:14:23
Speaker
I need a little little bit and a little bit of feeling that I'm drinking a little bit of chemicals to mix with my Prozac to give the best facial I ever can. And that's how my facials are brought to you by Alani Nguyen Prozac. It's your cocktail. It is. I love it. love it And own it.
01:14:42
Speaker
Oh my gosh. That's ah amazing. Okay. Is there a daily ritual affirmation or routine that helps you stay aligned and focused? Yeah. You know, i wish.
01:14:54
Speaker
um But I feel like if I don't lately, if I don't have my son fall asleep on me while we're watching TV at night, like that is my thing. It just doesn't feel like I've ended the night. So that's what I've been loving is just snuggling up to my little and like, I don't care if I'm the mom that's going contact sleep with my kid till he's 12. I don't care.
01:15:15
Speaker
We'll do it. It's fine. Um, Um, but I just, I love that contact nap and I just feel like it's so healing. Obviously I'm touching people and healing people all day, but like he heals me back. And so having that is just, it's just been a thing. And over the weekend, every night I like couldn't fall asleep. And when I came home last night, was like, Oh, it's because I didn't have my little baby cuddles. So like that. And then that's my why, you know, so it's all just kind of in one And it's just, it's really cool that he doesn't even realize what he does, you know? That's really special. beautiful
01:15:53
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Okay. To top off this spirituality conversation, ah how do you incorporate spirituality, your energy work, or even your intuition into your business, like with your clients?
01:16:07
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I feel like intuition is huge. um Some people have it and some people don't and that's okay. I have it and I know I have it. um I've always been like, I know something's gonna happen before it happens type of thing.
01:16:22
Speaker
And when my clients come in, if you can't read the energy of your client, ah then you just haven't, you haven't like peaked yet in your aesthetics. Like you'll be able to read their energy and kind of just feel like what kind of treatment is this going to be today type of thing.
01:16:38
Speaker
And so like bringing that in and just reading my client, touching them, feeling them and just being like, They need a facial that we're not going to talk a lot. They need a little bit more relaxation today. Like you can feel it. I'm not one that says now I'm cleansing your skin. Now I'm exfoliating. I'm just doing the do and letting them guide the rest of the treatment.
01:17:00
Speaker
But I used to be that esthetician. So it's like I've kind of just found that using my intuition and how I can read people's energies and kind of read their aura, see how they're feeling that day is huge. And I feel like that goes even further in customizing a treatment for somebody in my treatment room.
01:17:17
Speaker
Absolutely. Oh my goodness. I would agree. Yeah. 1000%. I love that part about not peaking yet. Cause I think, I think naturally a lot of us, us estheticians are very intuitive. think that's why we've chosen this career path, but you're right. I think it can based off of where we're at personally, that intuition can be stronger or not. It can be a little bit foggy maybe. Um, so really paying attention to that. And then again, transferring that over into our treatments and our services and the relationships we have with our clients is just so powerful and, um, really cool.
01:17:55
Speaker
and Do you believe in divine timing or manifestation when it comes to your career? Oh my God. Yes, of course. Absolutely. I mean, i can't even imagine having started this business any other point of my life until now. Like, I just don't think it would have worked out the same way it did. Mm-hmm.
01:18:17
Speaker
And then, of course, manifestation. Like, I'm always talking to the universe. Like, so either I'm, like, physically saying it out loud or just mentally in my head. Like, we're always kind of asking um the universe just to kind of, like, show up for us. Like, asking the universe what we need to give it so that it can show us back what we need. So I'm always doing that.
01:18:41
Speaker
I love it so much. You're speaking directly to our hearts for sure. Very much. Very much. Okay. um think with Where do I want to go next? What is next for you? What are your future dreams, expansions or projects that you're excited about?
01:19:03
Speaker
I mean, I think just getting my books back to completely filled um is definitely, I always have at least like one space a day open. So just like getting back there, that's just like my little time goal. um Obviously paying off this hydrofacial machine is a big goal of mine. um That's a great goal. Yeah.
01:19:27
Speaker
Love it, but dear God. um and then just staying in, in this and just continuing to love it and making sure that I'm listening to myself when I need to make changes and being okay with those changes that need to be made or that the universe is just making for me.
01:19:48
Speaker
And just understanding like there is a reason that these things are happening and just sitting there and listening for it. And so that's been a big thing learning in your business. Like I can do that within myself, but when you're depending on it for money and for livelihood, it's a little scary just to let go and let let it happen. and so like my biggest goal is to just continue doing that. Of course, I talked about, you know, bringing on an employee, possibly stuff like that. But I just I really love where I'm at right now. I feel like our family wise is really good with where we are right now. so my next big thing is I don't even know what it is yet. It's coming.
01:20:31
Speaker
I love this answer so much. And there's just a couple of things that I want to say. um i think that just being in a state of allowing things to unfold is so important. And it can be really hard for a lot of people to do because that's such like a feminine energy for a business owner to have. yeah But I do think that it's really important to understand that as much as we can have goals, sometimes things are just going to unfold how they will.
01:20:57
Speaker
and But then also what's coming to me as I'm listening to you is that you you just want to be happy with your business also. And that's just something you've kind of said throughout. And I think that and That is a very, very um important aspect and like lofty goal and energy to just keep in your business. You're like, well, i just want to keep growing with it. i want to be open to whatever's happening and I want to be really happy doing it. I do have a question for you going back to spirituality.
01:21:27
Speaker
Do you believe that your business also has a soul and an energy of its own? I feel like it does. i feel like I've given it a lot of nurturing for it to kind of become what it is. But I do feel like Salt City Skin Care brings its own kind of people into this energy as well. Because it's like, how the heck do people just find you off the street? You know, they're like, oh, yeah, Google. Like, I'm like, okay, well, like, what on Google told you to come? You know, like, It's just crazy. So I do feel like it does have its own soul in a way. um i do still feel like it's still such a baby that it needs a little bit of mothering still.
01:22:06
Speaker
um But absolutely, it does things without me even knowing. And then I look back and I'm like, oh, I'm like, what'd you do? What am I doing here? You know? so absolutely.
01:22:19
Speaker
It's like Pocahontas, like everything has ah ah an energy and a soul to it. Like why would our businesses not have their own? Right. Exactly. you say

Industry Insights and Legacy

01:22:30
Speaker
Pocahontas and I'm like, yes. Yes. Yes. Yep.
01:22:36
Speaker
What kind of legacy do you hope to leave in the beauty industry? I mean, i just think that for a while, especially like in the aesthetic forums, even now, I mean, people are kind of so mean and catty and yeah, you get it. And that's just kind of how women in a big circle can be working in spas, working in medical industry. Like it can get really catty and I'm, I can be awful. Like I know it, I can be such a bully. Like I know who I am.
01:23:09
Speaker
And it's so I want to make sure people know like, she's so real. She's so true to who she is. She'll tell you how it is. But she was so nice. She was so kind. And she wanted to see other people succeed and grow too. And I think that's just that's really what I'm all about. Like, I don't need to be a top influencer in the aesthetic community. Like, I don't even want that pressure. you know, but it's like, I want the people that do follow me and that do listen to me and hear me like, just know who I am as a genuine human and just want to be my friend and just continue following because of that and learn from me because of that. Not because i have a brand deal.
01:23:50
Speaker
Yeah. Which is so healing for women around the world. And for our lineage and, you know, our future generations, it really is healing. And it that's how you do create a legacy is through like love and light and kindness and authenticity. Yeah. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Okay. We're going to do some rapid fire questions. I think we already determined what your choice of caffeine is.
01:24:23
Speaker
Oh yeah. This can be an energy drink. A hundred percent. Yeah. What is your favorite skincare product? Oh, my favorite skincare product right now is going to be the Dermathod Peel Pads. It's a Korean skincare line. The glow that they give, like I've been using them for the past year and a half or since Bikin Aesthetics brought them on.
01:24:44
Speaker
i'm obsessed. They're beautiful. So people are finally seeing how great they are and I'm seeing them pop up more on Instagram. ah Will you send me the link and we'll put it in the show notes? Yeah, absolutely. Can we purchase it through you?
01:24:57
Speaker
ah No, you'd purchase it. Well, professionals, you would purchase it ah through anesthetics. Oh, it's a professional product only. Got you. Okay. What's your favorite treatment that you do?
01:25:09
Speaker
Facials all day, every day. Like I just the ooey gooey, delicious facials. and weekly I love it. What's your favorite treatment to receive? also an ooey gooey facial and it honestly like it's hard because I am so picky but I do have a few estheticians that I'll go to and I know I can get it every single time I love it do you want to shout them out ah Yep. So my friend in Texas, Trisha, she's evolved skincare and waxing. She's kind of who started me on my whole like facial massage, like way back when, and just giving that really good facial.
01:25:47
Speaker
um And then my friend, Rachel, she's over here um in Utah as well. She is Rachel Reynolds. I think it's like skincare by Rachel or something like that. but she gives an incredible facial as well. And then, um, your skin by toss. Uh, she is one of my aesthetic friends and she just moved up the street from me. So it's so good. She's actually coming to see me for a facial right after this today and I'll see one ah for her on black Friday. So we do that and her facial. I had my first one last month or the month before, and it was just, it was delightful. I loved it. So
01:26:24
Speaker
Yeah, was great. Oh, I'd love that. We can, we put them in our show notes too. Of course. And I'll send you back their Instagrams. Cool. That would be helpful. Yeah. I love that. Um, what are a couple details you bring into the treatment room or spa space that might be different than other businesses or help you stand out?
01:26:44
Speaker
So I know when I first started and kind of found like my space colors and everything, I was one of the first ones that was like, you walk in my room and it's dark. Like it is dim. My walls are like the darkest rainforest emerald green. They're pretty. i love them I work by like the one LED light behind me. Like that's what lights up my room. i've got one candle going type of thing, candle warmer.
01:27:09
Speaker
um I just very dark, chill vibes. You're not going to hear spa music in my treatment room. It's all like electric house music. So it's just very chill. Sometimes you'll get some like lyrics in the songs. I know every single song I do. It's called Today's Chill on Apple Music. They change it like every couple Wednesdays, like once a month. It is such a good ah starting. And then you just pick your favorite songs and I just add them to my own playlist. And then that's kind of how my playlist evolves. But yeah, today's chill. It has like a blue sky like ball as the picture.
01:27:49
Speaker
um that is that those are my vibes. Just chill vibes like come as you are. that's it. Yep. Today's chill, Apple Music Electronic. Love it. I love it. That is so unique and so cool. I'm so glad that we asked this question.
01:28:05
Speaker
And I love it And most people, like when men come into my treatment room, I feel like they feel more comfortable. Like they're not coming into like a bright pink room and there's nothing wrong with that. But I just feel like they feel a little bit more welcome. i wish I could find the review that a man left me.
01:28:24
Speaker
It was the funniest review. He called me a goddess of like darkness. I don't even remember because Google has hidden it because i thought it was fake because it was but that detailed. It was so funny. I'll to find a picture of it, but I just like come as you are. I'm not the esthetician that's dressing up. I don't do a full face of makeup because I'm nitty gritty. I am messy. I've got oil everywhere. i've got lotion. Like i am putting in the work. So I'm not someone that's dressing up. and doing all of that like I will for sure but you're usually like in the winter you're gonna see me in a sweatshirt or a t-shirt with my logo on it I'm in black leggings or i love like the new linen pants um that are big right now and I always like checkered vans I've always got my vans on when I'm working like that's just who I am so it's like come as you are and we're just gonna chill together and you're gonna be thrown into such relaxation like you don't even care what I'm wearing right now
01:29:23
Speaker
Oh my gosh. I did. ah I went back and looked at your Instagram and your room is very like moody and it is dark and it feels just so cozy and like nothing I've really seen before. And so I love that so, so much. yeah Um, okay. Last rapid fire question. One word to describe your current season of life.
01:29:47
Speaker
just in general, my life. um I mean, I'm tired, but hey I say that so endearingly because like, I'm so lucky to be this tired, like working on my business. I'm so lucky being this tired because I have a beautiful baby boy that we tried for two years for like, I'm so lucky to be this tired. And so I'm so thankful to be in this season of my life. Yeah.
01:30:17
Speaker
That's so beautiful. Yes. Oh my gosh. I love it. What advice would you get would you give your younger esthetician self?
01:30:28
Speaker
I mean, just keep pushing. like And because I was in so many spas and stuff, like push past the bullshit and do what you love. like You're there because you love to do it. And you're there because you're good at it So like just keep going. like It's going to be so much better. It's going to continue to be so much better. So just keep pushing. like Don't let the negative weigh you down. Because it definitely did. And it has. And it does for everybody. But it's like, just keep going.
01:30:59
Speaker
Do you feel like you're, you're, you now yourself on this timeline is actually helping you on that previous timeline as a younger esthetician? Like, do you believe in those timeline shifts? Oh yeah. Like looking at yourself driving past in a car type of thing. Yes. Absolutely.
01:31:16
Speaker
Like, I think that younger Nicole seeing Nicole now would be like, that's insane. Like, we always knew that was part of us. But I think just in I became an institution when I was 21. I think in your early 20s, like you're still trying to find who you are. And like younger Nicole seeing like who I became as a person, like she'd be so proud and excited. Yeah.
01:31:40
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So that kind of leads into the next question, or I think it can. What does the term beyond aesthetics mean to you?
01:31:53
Speaker
I mean, beyond aesthetics, it it means just exactly that. Like, obviously we're in this because we love it, but there's so much more that goes into aesthetics, like the body, mind, spirit, everything wellness wise, everything plays into that. And you can always see it on people's faces. Like if something is just a little off somewhere in those little areas of their life, you can see it. So it's like beyond aesthetics is that we're here for the aesthetics part, but you get so much more out of it just by being with your people and with your business is you're going to see the wellness of all those things.
01:32:37
Speaker
Yes,

And Tiffany and I really believe that our industry, and you've mentioned this a couple times, is evolving.
01:33:53
Speaker
