Today we are continuing in the Book of Proverbs. Karen Henley has  grouped the Proverbs by topic so that we read multiple proverbs with the  same theme/topic. All of the proverbs are useful for teaching and  relevant in our daily lives so it's very hard to pick just a couple for  discussion! I selected a couple of proverbs that I really enjoyed, such  as Proverb 27:17- Iron rubbed against iron becomes sharper. One person makes another person wiser. In our discussion we talked about this  Proverb meaning we should be in community with one another, encouraging one another and correcting one another using God's Word. We talked about tying this proverb in with a couple of other ones, such as being able to trust a friend to tell you what's wrong, whereas an enemy will not  tell you when they see you doing something wrong, Proverb 27:6. We talked about not letting our enemy cause division between brothers and sisters in Christ because it keeps us from communing with one another and being able to sharpen one another and encourage one another. We tied this idea in with Proverb 3:5-6- Trust in God with your whole heart.  Don't count on the way you understand things. We can have a tendency to get lost in our own thinking, so it's good to have REAL friends who can tell us that what we are thinking about is not right and therefore sharpen us!

Passover and Easter: A Unique Coincidence

00:00:52
Speaker
I am back a lot earlier than I expected to be from my very first Passover Seder meal, and it was so amazing. I had such a great time and learned so much.
00:01:03
Speaker
I want to encourage everybody to take part in Passover. ah it starts technically tonight, this afternoon from sundown. i think it's just about now at 6.14, so very close time.
00:01:17
Speaker
And then tomorrow is actually the first day Passover, and we will ah have it for one week. And the this is the first time in a thousand years Passover is going to line up with Easter.
00:01:33
Speaker
So I am just watching to see what God will do ah with this Passover because he ah you know gives us signs in the stars with the the lunar calendar and the things that go on.
00:01:47
Speaker
And I don't know all of those things that happen, but I'm just looking to see what our Lord has in store for us this year with this Passover season.

Introduction to Proverbs

00:01:59
Speaker
So thank you for being here with me today as we are reading through the Bible using the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley. We are reading in the book of Proverbs right now, and we have some wonderful Proverbs to read through today.
00:02:16
Speaker
Karen Henley has done a beautiful job grouping like the Proverbs much in the same way that she grouped the Psalms. So we will be reading a collection of Proverbs that carry a certain theme.
00:02:29
Speaker
And it's like little chapter headings. And they're not written in numerical order. They're written in ah like this categorical order, I would say. So here we are at April 12th, and I cannot list you every single proverb that we're going to be reading because some of the lines are their own proverb.
00:02:50
Speaker
But I will tell you as we get to them, I often tell you how ah what chapters or which Psalms we will be covering today. and And in this case, it is too extensive because the proverbs are not particularly long.
00:03:05
Speaker
like the Psalms are. And so we will be reading a lot of Proverbs. And Karen Henley has actually done a beautiful job in this version of the Bible, where she has not only grouped them into different categories, but then after the proverb is given in little letters, or little numbers rather, she gives us the number of the proverb.
00:03:28
Speaker
So I'm going to go ahead and try reading them. might sound... it might sound um Like they're interjected, but that's the way that the Proverbs are is because there are a lot of them.
00:03:41
Speaker
As we noted yesterday, Solomon wrote over 3000 wise sayings. And that doesn't mean that we will read all 3000. ah But I don't actually know how many there are in the book of Proverbs. I don't think that includes all of them.

Trusting God for Wisdom

00:03:58
Speaker
So here we go. Our first section of Proverbs is entitled, Looking Up to God. So these are Proverbs which mention the idea of looking up to God.
00:04:09
Speaker
When we look up to someone, that is someone that we look to for guidance. And so this is talking about looking to God for guidance. And, um, It has a lot of Proverbs in there, so let's go ahead and get started. We have actually a good deal of reading in the Proverbs because there are so many of them.
00:04:28
Speaker
And we will be in the Proverbs for, I didn't count, but you know maybe at least like a couple of weeks like we were with the Psalms. So here we go. You can begin to be wise by looking up to God.
00:04:41
Speaker
If you're wise, good things will come to you. If you make fun of wise thinking, you'll be in trouble. That is Proverbs 9, verses 10 through 12.
00:04:54
Speaker

00:05:05
Speaker
Looking up to God brings life. It keeps people from the traps of death. That was Proverbs 14, 27.
00:05:17
Speaker
Looking up to God teaches people to be wise. Knowing you're not so important comes but before being important. I like that.
00:05:33
Speaker
Good things come to people who always look up to God. But some people won't let themselves care about God. They are headed for trouble. Proverbs 28, 14.
00:05:45
Speaker
Trust in, oh, and this is a section the next section. We finished that section of looking up to God. The next section is entitled trusting. So these proverbs have to do with trusting God.
00:05:59
Speaker
Trust in God with your whole heart. Don't count on the way you understand things. Always remember to let God be in charge. Then he will show you what to do.
00:06:13

00:06:18

00:09:46
Speaker
That is Proverbs 26, verse 7.
00:09:51
Speaker

Proverbs in Daily Life

00:11:50
Speaker
This next section is our last section of Proverbs for the day, and it is entitled, Things to Do.
00:11:58
Speaker
Some people make fun of others. If you tell them they're wrong, they'll make fun of you. If you tell sinful people they're wrong, they'll be mean to you. But tell wise people they're wrong, and they will love you.
00:12:14
Speaker
Teach wise people, and they will be wiser. Teach people who do what's right, and they will learn more.
00:12:24

00:12:41
Speaker

00:12:54
Speaker
Don't talk to foolish people. They'll make fun of the wise things you say.
00:13:00
Speaker
That is Proverbs 23, verse nine. You can trust a friend to tell you what's wrong, but an enemy will pretend everything's all right.
00:13:12
Speaker
That is Proverbs 27, verse 6. verse six Iron rubbed against iron becomes sharper. One person makes another person wiser.
00:13:26
Speaker
That is Proverbs 27, verse 17.
00:13:31
Speaker
You may tell someone he is wrong. What if you tell him many times, but he won't change? All of a sudden, he will get into trouble, and there won't be any way to get out of it.
00:13:45
Speaker
That is Proverbs 29, verse one. And that is the end of our Proverbs for today.
00:13:53
Speaker
This whole book of Proverbs is is is wise sayings. So every single one we read is applicable to our life today. There is not a one that we could not say is not relevant to our daily living.
00:14:10
Speaker
It is so hard to pick out some that are just applicable for today. i could pick any one of them. I'm going to go with a couple of different ones that really stood out for me today.
00:14:23
Speaker
And one of my favorite ones is the one that says, iron rubbed against iron becomes sharper. One person makes another person wiser. And that is Proverb 27 verse 17.
00:14:37
Speaker
And what that means is that as we have friends who are godly, that we help each other. We talk with one another and we help each other learn more about God's word, how to be wise, how to do things right.
00:14:52
Speaker
It's like the proverb that says,
00:14:57
Speaker
you can trust a friend to tell you what's wrong, but an enemy will pretend everything's all right. It can be hard to tell somebody, oh, I don't think you're right.
00:15:10
Speaker
but and and and But an enemy, someone who doesn't care about you as much, they if they see that you're doing something wrong, or if you see somebody else is doing something wrong and you don't say something, then you're not being a true friend.
00:15:23
Speaker
It's your job to call things out and say, I'm not sure that what you're doing is the right thing if they are truly your friend. And so we are meant to be in community with one another. Iron sharpening iron, talking about each other, to give talking with each other, to give each other encouragement.
00:15:42
Speaker
by quoting scripture verses to one another and being a source of of comfort by using God's word to to be there with one another when we are going through hard times or when to celebrate when we have joy to help us give the glory to God.
00:15:59
Speaker
And that's just a wonderful thing to have with our brothers and sisters. And that is something that our enemy does not want us to have. And I was talking with somebody about this the other day, and my friend, one of my friends.
00:16:16
Speaker
And that was that I have noticed that if there is somebody that you meet and just right out of the box, right at it right when you first meet them, you're just kind of irritated by them.

Personal Reflection and Fellowship

00:16:29
Speaker
Chances are that person is your brother or sister in Christ and our enemy does not want us to be friends with them because he does not want there to be harmony in God's family, in our body of Christ.
00:16:45
Speaker
And it's our responsibility to forgive our brothers and sisters if we've done wrong. But and we're talking about just you meet somebody and we say people rub us the wrong way. Well, sometimes it's because they're a lot like us and we are seeing things about us in that person.
00:17:01
Speaker
Or we may be feeling competitive or like, oh, well, what do they think they're better than me? And then you have to stop and say, well, do I thinking I'm better than them? Whatever it is, I have noticed that ah particularly like, let's say like when I'm at work and I meet people, there have been people that I have met where it's just right away, I'm kind of just like, don't really care much for that person.
00:17:27
Speaker
But then I find out later, that they are my brother or my sister in Christ. And I think, oh, that's why, because my enemy doesn't want me to be friends with this person and recognize and treat them like my brother or my sister in Christ.
00:17:42
Speaker
And they didn't even do anything wrong. I just, I didn't like the way that they do things. I didn't like something about them. Sometimes I don't like the way they're they're not doing something that I think they should be doing. And whatever it is, it's just something negative.
00:17:57
Speaker
And I'm sure that that is our enemy trying to cause difficulties between brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. And so I have become aware of that. And if there is somebody that I automatically just for for absolutely just no reason have decided, I'm not really sure I like that person.
00:18:17
Speaker
I try to go out of my way to get to know that person. And you know what? Every time I have done that, it has turned out that that that person is my brother or my sister in Christ.
00:18:29
Speaker
And then i make special effort to get to know them and to love them because I know that we are on the winning side with God. And I know that he wants us to get along as we are all part of the same body.
00:18:42
Speaker
And so that goes along with being able to talk to people. it doesn't mean that I'm trying to be wiser than them, but that's what it makes me think of when I read the Bible verses where and in in today's today's Proverbs, where it talks about speaking the truth to people, a wise person, um you know, when we talk to other people. Let's see.
00:19:09
Speaker
People who trust in themselves are foolish.
00:19:16
Speaker
And so I don't want to, it says being afraid of people is like being in a trap. But people who trust in God will stay safe. And that is part of Proverbs 29 verse 25.
00:19:29
Speaker
And the other one that's kind of like that, it says, trust in God with your whole heart. Don't count on the way you understand things. Always remember to let God be in charge and then he will show you what to do.
00:19:44
Speaker
We can apply that there too. don't trust on the way I am understanding this person. God sees the heart. And the chances are that if we just don't like somebody write it out right right off the bat, it's probably we're not looking at their heart.
00:20:01
Speaker
And so I just want to encourage us with getting to know people before making judgment.

Community and Encouragement

00:20:08
Speaker
And that if we are friends with someone and that we sharpen one another, then we encourage one another at work with our Bible verses and we talk to each other. And I have so many conversations with people at work about God and an encouragement with people.
00:20:25
Speaker
And they are people that in the beginning, potentially, i could have been irritated with. And I love knowing that now I have communion with these people versus argument or discord or strife.
00:20:41
Speaker
I have have peace with them. And I love that. And I love that one that says, trust in God with your whole heart and don't count on the way you understand things. So that is, ah Karen Henley has paraphrased our Bible.
00:20:56
Speaker
So this is the one that would say, trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. It's just giving us an hopefully a little easier way to understand the proverb.
00:21:09
Speaker
There was another one too that I really liked. There were all, so so many of them were good. I was like, oh, I wanna talk about this one. Oh, I wanna talk about this one.
00:21:19
Speaker
Let's see, where were some of the other ones?
00:21:25
Speaker
You can begin to be wise by looking up to God. If you're wise, good things will come to you. If you make fun of wise thinking, you'll be in trouble. I like that one. So many times you try to help somebody and say, what you're doing just really doesn't make any sense.
00:21:41
Speaker
And they just, they don't want to listen to you. It's like, all right. There are people who just will not want to listen. And we heard a lot of proverbs like that. Like fools don't want to understand.
00:21:53
Speaker
They just want to say what they think. I love that one. That's one of my favorite ones. Fools do not want to understand. They just want to say what they think.
00:22:05
Speaker
How many people have you met that they just want to hear themselves talk? They have no interest in you telling them, I'm not sure that that's what that means, because they don't care if that's what that means.
00:22:17
Speaker
They just want to believe whatever they think. And ah I have said to people, and one person in particular, just because you think it does not make it so.
00:22:29
Speaker
I could think anything I want, and that doesn't make it true.
00:22:36
Speaker
So there you go. We could pick any one of these proverbs. Do you you have a favorite one that you heard today? i hope that you found some proverbs that just really spoke to you. Well, thank you for joining me today. i could go on and on about these proverbs because it there are just so many of them and they're all so good.
00:22:58
Speaker
but we have to be able to be done at some point, right? So if you feel that God has lit your light with some of these Proverbs, then when you are finished listening or watching, please click that light button.
00:23:10
Speaker
And let's help spread the word about reading God's wise words. I will be here for everybody tomorrow and celebrating the Passover. i hope everybody has a great rest of their night. And I hope that you are curious and look towards celebrating Passover in your home.
