Thank you for joining me as we both count the omer today AND have our  daily Bible reading session! As promised, here is the link for a  downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for  yourself:  https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today we have a double dose of blessing as we learn about the connection between the days of Passover, counting of the Omer, the 50 days later  that God gave us the Torah, and the day of Pentecost, the giving of the  Holy Spirit to the first disciples 50 days after Jesus rose from the grave!

In our proverbs reading today we will read the topics of:  Eating and  Drinking too Much and Staying with the One You Marry. We will talk about  how the proverbs for Staying with the One You Marry is addressed to a son, it is also applicable for women, to consider about men. Our daily application today comes to us about eating and drinking too much. Food tastes yummy but Jesus tells us that food was made for the body; the  body was not made for eating! Food is meant to nourish our bodies. It is  not just meant to eat because it tastes good, so we need to be careful not to over indulge in either food or drink. In our discussion today I shared my experience with my inspiratory breath training device and found that when I drank wine my body was actually weaker the next day  after having done so and so I made the decision not to drink because it is affecting my body in ways I cannot feel but can only SEE with the machine's program! Sin can be like this, too! It may be imperceptible to us, but it affecting us in ways we don't even realize! So we need to be careful about what we put into our mouths as well as being careful of what we hear and see, as we discussed the other day.

Introduction and Purpose

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello everybody, today is Wednesday. It is April 16th, 2025 and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for our daily Bible reading and we're also here for our daily counting of the Omer.
00:00:17
Speaker
Thank you for joining me as we read through the Bible this year.

Tools and Traditions for Spiritual Practice

00:00:21
Speaker
We are using the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley.
00:00:27
Speaker
And if you are keeping track with your calendar, you know what time it is. Do you have your calendar out? Do you have your sticker out? Any other way to mark it off? Great! Let's do that because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:41
Speaker
Cleo, are you marking off your calendar? How about you, George? Are you marking off that calendar? Diamond, I know you're marking off the calendar. And Jedi, and Forrest, and Pearl.
00:00:52
Speaker
Helen, are you listening? Are you marking off your calendar too? Don't forget to get that calendar out. Get that sticker on there. You're hearing the Bible today. And you too, Julie, you can mark off your calendar too.
00:01:06
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me, everybody, whether you are watching or listening. I am so glad that you are here today with us and that we are going to be listening to the Bible today.

Significance of the Omer

00:01:16
Speaker
Today is also the third day of the counting of the Omer.
00:01:20
Speaker
And as promised, I'm going to lead us in a short blessing and the counting of the Omer. So if you would also like to participate in that, feel free to repeat after me. In case you missed yesterday, the counting of the Omer is the time between Passover and Shavuot, which is ah a Jewish festival, typically seen as Jewish, but it's actually the feast, ah the first offerings.
00:01:49
Speaker
And it corresponds with the feast, the giving of the torah by god fifty days after the israelites were taken out of egypt from passover and in the new testament jesus fulfilled that because he had them he sent the holy spirit that was received on the disciples so we may call it pentecost in christianity but it really corresponds with shavuot which is the offering of first fruits and jesus is our first fruit he was the first fruit he was the first son the only son and god offered him to us he gave his life as a sin offering so that we could have eternal life with him and i am so thankful for that
00:02:38
Speaker
So join with me if you are interested in counting off the third day of the Omer. Omer is an unit of measurement that was used as for flower offering during this 50 days.
00:02:52
Speaker
during this fifty days And so it's just simply a matter of counting that. And it is something that is given as a direction for everybody to count the Omer themselves.
00:03:04
Speaker
And that is why i am observing it. And I am offering you the opportunity to also observe this with

Participation in Omer Counting

00:03:11
Speaker
me. It is not simply a quote, Jewish holiday or a Jewish thing to do.
00:03:16
Speaker
It's actually something that's called by all believers to do. And God gives us these times of remembrance so that we don't forget about the things that he has done for us. And these are things that were meant to be done forever.
00:03:31
Speaker
So join with me if you would like in repeating with me first the blessing that goes before the counting and then the counting itself. It's very short. And this was taken from shoreshdavid.org.
00:03:44
Speaker
And as I put in the description yesterday, the link for that, I will also include the link for that today, in case you are interested in following along in the devotional ah to count your own Omer.

Blessing and Personal Experiences

00:03:57
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments,
00:04:10
Speaker
and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:04:17
Speaker
Today is the third day of the first week and day three.
00:04:27
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.
00:04:31
Speaker
Thank you so much for counting the Omer with me today. God is multiplying our blessings in this season of 50 days for our first fruits. And I pray that you also will keep your eyes open and look for God during these 50 days to multiply your blessings.
00:04:50
Speaker
We are going to go ahead and get started with our daily reading for the day. That is multiplying our blessings by giving us two things to do, the counting of the Omer and our daily reading.
00:05:01
Speaker
And I wanted to share with you, ah it's been a little bit since I have done so, but God has really been using these daily readings in my life. And I wanted to give you perspective that I ask God each day to show me what he would like for us to know and about the daily reading.

Forgiveness and Daily Readings

00:05:21
Speaker
And so i don't know if you can hear that, but Kitty is at the door. He wants to go out. So one second.
00:05:30
Speaker
And so he has definitely been using the words that he has been giving me. So yesterday in in Proverbs, I asked him, I said, Lord, what do you want me to to know? What do you want to to be the daily application?
00:05:43
Speaker
And yesterday we spoke about ah loving our enemies and for giving them food or giving them water if they needed it and for praying for them. And and Jesus told us to love our enemies.
00:05:55
Speaker
And so I had opportunity to use that yesterday at work. and ah to practice forgiveness. And it it was, I didn't even, almost didn't realize it at first. I didn't really fully come to it today until to- today because I was so bothered by this situation with a first level manager at work.
00:06:17
Speaker
And i I it was just, I was really frustrated and irritable about it. And it was waking me up almost this morning. It was the first thing on my mind. And I don't like that.
00:06:28
Speaker
So God really put it on my heart, especially with today's reading of the Omer. Because every day has a little devotional. just It's just a little Bible, one Bible verse. So it's not cumbersome to do if you want to look that up.
00:06:42
Speaker
But look at God speaking. Let's see. Do nothing, Philippians 2 verses 3 and 4.
00:06:54
Speaker
The theme is caring for others. Did we not about yesterday in Proverbs? but with humility consider others as more important than yourselves looking out not only for your own interests but also for the interests of others did we just read about that yesterday in proverbs God speaks through His Word every single day, but when He puts multiple messages from multiple sources together in your life, you know that He is really trying to communicate a message.
00:07:29
Speaker
And so I want to encourage you to look and listen for God during every day, but most importantly during these times where He has set apart these appointment times to be with you.

Seeking God's Messages

00:07:40
Speaker
God has set this appointment time out for us counting of the Omer. He set up this appointment time with Passover. He has set up this appointment time with Shavuot at the end of the counting of the Omer.
00:07:51
Speaker
And these are times that he wants us to come to him because he has an appointment set for him. and we are meant to join him in that appointment time. So I wanted to encourage you to look to him every day with these readings and to look for him to be speaking to you personally as you read and listen to him ah in your life.
00:08:13
Speaker
So that definitely really hit that home for me. And so I was able to um forgive the person And it really made me feel better, just like when we wroteri read about David in the Psalm, where he talked about first how he was harboring his sin.
00:08:31
Speaker
It was sin for me to be unforgiving and to be angry. And so instead, I forgave them and I prayed for them. Yesterday, we talked about praying for our enemies.
00:08:42
Speaker
And so I prayed for this person. And it feels so much better to be in alignment with God than to be and opposition. So I wanted to share that with you, that God is definitely working in my life and that his word is applicable every day.
00:08:57
Speaker
And I want to offer you that as an example so that you can be encouraged and and see where God is working in

Sharing Personal Spiritual Experiences

00:09:04

Proverbs on Relationships

00:09:59
Speaker
So let's go ahead and pick up today in our Proverbs.
00:10:03
Speaker
And we are going to see here.
00:10:08
Speaker
Our first section is entitled, Eating and Drinking Too Much. And it's a collection of proverbs.
00:10:18
Speaker
And it starts out with, because of wine, people make fun of others. Because of beer, people start fights. People who sin because of wine and beer are not wise.
00:10:34
Speaker
Don't get together with people who drink too much wine. don't get together with people who eat too much food. These people become poor. They get sleepy and lazy.
00:10:47
Speaker
And in the end, they have no good clothes. Who has trouble? Who is sad? Who gets into fights? Who keeps talking about what's wrong?
00:11:00
Speaker
Who gets hurt for nothing? Whose eyes stay red? It is the people who drink too much wine. Don't keep looking at wine when it's red.
00:11:13
Speaker
Don't keep looking when it's bright in the cup. Don't keep looking when it feels smooth in your mouth. It will bite you and poison you like a snake. You'll see strange things.
00:11:26
Speaker
You'll get mixed up. You'll be like someone sleeping in a ship at sea. You'll say, they hit me, but I didn't get hurt. They beat me up, but I didn't feel it.
00:11:39
Speaker
When will I wake up? I want to have another drink.
00:11:47
Speaker
The next section is entitled Staying with the One You Marry. And that one will be, it's quite long and it comes from a selection of Proverbs. Proverbs 5, Proverbs verses 20 through 35 Proverbs 7 verses 6 through 27.
00:12:02
Speaker
and proverb seven verses six through twenty seven
00:12:08
Speaker
Staying with the one you marry. My son, oh and I wanted to let you know, it's it's addressed to a man or to a boy, a son.
00:12:19
Speaker
and But we can also, i know we have a mostly women who are listening to ah this event. And so ah it can also go the other way, my daughter, to not be enticed by men who do the same thing.
00:12:35
Speaker
because we know that it's both men and women who can behave this way. But this was written by Solomon, who was a man, and so he is giving it from the perspective of a father to a son.
00:12:46
Speaker
But we can also take it in the direction of a mother to her daughter and have it be speaking about a man. So I wanted to let us know that God's word is very important applicable to everybody.
00:13:00
Speaker
And there are multiple ways that we can look at it, but I wanted to ah give at least that one little perspective possibility there. My son, sometimes a woman leaves the person she marries.
00:13:13
Speaker
She wants to live with someone else. The way she talks is as smooth as oil, but she will end up turning sour. She is like a sharp sword with two edges.
00:13:26
Speaker
She leads right to the grave. She doesn't care about how to have a good life. Stay away from a person like this. Don't even go near her house.
00:13:37
Speaker
If you do, you'll give her control. Then you'll cry at the end of your life. Your body will be all used up. You'll say, i hated being told I was wrong.
00:13:50
Speaker
I wouldn't obey my teachers. I wouldn't listen to them. Now I'm in trouble. Everybody sees it.
00:13:59
Speaker
Stay with your own wife. It's like drinking water from your own well. Should you give your body to other people? That's like letting your water flow down the street.
00:14:13
Speaker
Keep your body to yourself. Never share it with strangers. I pray that you will be happy with the one you marry. Always be filled with wonder because of that person's love for you.
00:14:30
Speaker
Don't go with someone who wants to sin. Don't take someone else's wife. God sees what people do and their sins trap them.
00:14:42
Speaker
The wrong they do ties them up tight and they'll die because they didn't control themselves. They'll go wrong because they chose foolish things. So obey your father and don't forget what your mother teaches you.

Guidance and Wisdom from Parents

00:14:58
Speaker
Let their spirit, let their teaching be something special you keep. Let it be like a gold band to wear around your neck. It will be something you want to wear forever.
00:15:10
Speaker
Their teaching will guide you when you walk. Their teaching will watch over you when you sleep. Their teaching will lead you when you're awake. It's like a light that shows you where to go.
00:15:25
Speaker
Their teaching may show you that you are wrong. It may tell you to control yourself.
00:15:33
Speaker
It will keep you from a person who wants to sin with sex. It will keep you from believing their smooth talk. Don't wish for another man's wife because she looks beautiful.
00:15:47
Speaker
Don't let her trap you with the look in her eyes. She will make you have no more value than a loaf of bread.
00:15:57
Speaker
She will eat up your life. Can you put fire in your lap without being burned? Can you walk on hot coals and not burn your feet? That's what it's like when someone sins with sex.
00:16:12
Speaker
The person who does it will get into big trouble.
00:16:18
Speaker
A man is not wise to have sex with someone else's wife. He hurts himself and he won't feel good about himself anymore. Everyone will stop saying good things about him.
00:16:30
Speaker
The one that the other person married will be angry and he will get back at the one who took his wife. Nothing will make him forget it. I looked out my window and I saw a young man who didn't know much.
00:16:47
Speaker
He didn't know how to choose right from wrong. He was walking down the street. He was walking near a woman's corner. He walked toward her house and it was evening.
00:17:00
Speaker
The sun was going down, night was coming, and this woman came out to see him. and She was dressed to make him look at her. She planned to trick him.
00:17:14
Speaker
She was loud. She never did what anybody told her to do. She wouldn't stay home. She walked the streets, she went to the parks, she waited at all the corners.
00:17:28
Speaker
This woman held on to the young man and she kissed him. Her face showed that she didn't really care. The woman said her husband was gone on a long trip.
00:17:42
Speaker
The young man followed her and he was like an ox walking off to be killed. He was like a deer stepping into a trap. He was like a bird flying into a net.
00:17:54
Speaker
He didn't know that it would be the end of his life. So listen to me, my son. Don't turn your heart to the way that kind of woman lives. Don't walk on her roads.
00:18:06
Speaker
She has torn down many people. She is like a freeway that leads to a graveyard. She will lead you to death.
00:18:18
Speaker
So that's quite a strong message we have in today's proverb, isn't it?

Mindful Living According to Proverbs

00:18:24
Speaker
There's quite a lot about that. And we know as ah as women too, that men can do the same thing. And that's why i wanted to give us that perspective before we started so that ah we as women don't feel attacked in that or feel like we are being judged in that.
00:18:40
Speaker
And so i think that is definitely one of our big applications today is just to be mindful of relationships that we have with other people and to be sure that and we are behaving appropriately and honoring our marriage. Now, some of us are children here, so that won't be quite applicable to you yet, but it gives you something to think about. And it's the same thing with our first message about eating and drinking too much.
00:19:10
Speaker
And while you may be too young yet to be drinking alcohol, you can certainly abstain from food too much. And so while both of them are definitely applicable, ah the one that would be more suitable for everybody today would be about food and drink.
00:19:27
Speaker
And that sometimes we can overeat and we just enjoy food and we are feeding our mouths rather than feeding our body. And the Jesus tells us that food was created for the body.
00:19:41
Speaker
The body was not created for food. And so it is important that as we and enjoy the food that God has blessed us with, that we make sure that we are eating for the right reasons, that we are eating to nourish the body and not simply because it tastes good on the tongue.

Moderation in Consumption

00:20:01
Speaker
Because alcohol and and food, they can taste good in the mouth. but they hurt our body in excess.
00:20:10
Speaker
I ah have a, what is called an inspiratory muscle exercise machine. And it looks like this. Oh, it's all twisted around here.
00:20:28
Speaker
And this is something you you
00:20:35
Speaker
breathe into when you're standing.
00:20:39
Speaker
oop it's off. So it's not going to let me do anything. I was going to try to sample it. and what it does is it actually strengthens your core, your inside center muscles, but it actually strengthens everything because the body wants to breathe.
00:20:56
Speaker
And I have a a program and I offer this on my site. So I'm not trying to sell you something. I don't make any money from the machine or anything. um But this is a great exercise tool because what I noticed when I started using it is that if ah if I would have wine at night before going to bed, it it relaxes the muscles.
00:21:24
Speaker
And we know that it's a relaxant. But I would notice in in the program that shows you your daily progress, it shows you your strength and your ability and your, in your strength training.
00:21:38
Speaker
And I would notice that when I would drink, my strength would go down. And I noticed this consistently. And so because I could see what I could not feel perceptively, I decided that I didn't want to drink at all.
00:21:58
Speaker
Maybe occasionally, but knowing that when I do so, I'm actually weakening my body. Now, supposedly red wine is is, you know, a glass a day is good for your heart, you know, because it's got the,
00:22:13
Speaker
I can't think of the word right now, but it has it has something in it that's good for us, essentially. However, the weakness that it causes is imperceptible, meaning you can't feel it.
00:22:26
Speaker
And it's the same thing. ah What we're reading here is that it makes us weak. Overeating and overdrinking does things to the body. Even if you don't notice it, it's happening.
00:22:40
Speaker
And so I wanted to encourage you that based upon ah the evidence that I have seen, is to ah potentially make that choice, to know that even though you cannot see it, it's kind of like sin. You may not always be able to see it growing inside, but it does, it grows.
00:22:58
Speaker
And you may not realize that you'rere that you're doing it more and more or that you're eating more and more ah because it tastes good. and And then eventually maybe we notice our clothes are getting a little tighter.
00:23:11
Speaker
Now, if you're a kid, you're growing. We think you're growing, right? but it can still be that you're overeating and you're growing the wrong way. My mom always used to say, you can only grow in one way at a time, up or out.

Exercise and Alcohol Insights

00:23:26
Speaker
So are we growing up or are we growing out?
00:23:31
Speaker
And so I just wanted to bring that as um as evidence that that the Bible, like what the Bible tells us is that it's not good to overdrink. And that is actually a physical way that we can measure it.
00:23:44
Speaker
So yeah, I thought that was very interesting and I thought I would share that.

Reflection and Invitation

00:23:51
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today for the counting of the Omer and for our reading in Proverbs today. And i pray that you have felt that God has lit your light today, that you will find application in today's reading to be mindful of what we put into our mouths, as well as in into our what we see and what we hear, and that you keep your eyes and ears open for God.
00:24:19
Speaker
to show up in your daily life and to give us the opportunity to practice what we read about today, whether it's with our behavior um toward making sure that we are behaving appropriately or whether it is in making sure we do not overeat or over drink.
00:24:37
Speaker
I pray that God helps you to show how his word is applicable today. And if you feel that God has lit your light today, then please consider clicking that light button at the end.
00:24:49
