Thank you for joining me as we both count the Omer today AND have our daily Bible reading session! As promised, here is the link for a  downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for yourself:  https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today we have a double dose of blessing as we learn about the connection  between the days of Passover, counting of the Omer, the 50 days later  that God gave us the Torah, and the day of Pentecost, the giving of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples 50 days after Jesus rose from the  grave!

In our proverbs reading today we will read the topics of:  The Words  That We Say. We will talk about the importance of how words start off as  thoughts in our minds, so we  once again need to be mindful about the  thoughts we are thinking before they start popping out of our mouths. We  will read Ephesians 4:15-32 and see how we are admonished to speak the  truth in love, let our minds be transformed, speak only words that are  useful for building one another up and remember that we are all part of  the body of Christ!

If you would like to join me LIVE for the daily reading you can register  to attend on my site, here:  https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/schedule

Registration for the live event is a tiered pricing event, so you are  not required to pay to attend, only if you feel led. Introduction and Session Overview

Speaker
Good day, everybody. Today is April 17th, 2025. It is Thursday and you are with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. Thank you for joining me today as we are reading through the Bible and we are here for our daily Bible reading.

Daily Bible Reading with Kids Bible

00:00:18
Speaker
If you are just joining us, we are reading through the daily day by day kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley. And if you are following along on your calendar, it's time to get that out because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:35
Speaker
I have my sticker on there today for Thursday the 17th.
00:00:41
Speaker
So thank you so much for joining me today, whether you are listening on your favorite podcasting app or whether you are watching the video. I am so glad that you are listening to the Bible today and that God has led you to be here.

Understanding the Omer Tradition

00:00:52
Speaker
If you have been following along regularly, that you know that we are counting the days of the Omer.
00:00:57
Speaker
And this is a and counting of 50 days after Passover, which will ah commemorate the ah Feast of the the First Fruits. The Festival of First Fruits, I think, is what it's called. Shavuot. Shavuot.
00:01:12
Speaker
And ah in the Old Testament, in Deuteronomy and in Exodus, I think it was, ah we were commanded to count down the days, and that is the 50 days to commemorate the giving of the Torah to Moses.
00:01:28
Speaker
Now, in the New Testament, this is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit being given to the first disciples. And so we would call that in the New Testament, Pentecost.
00:01:39
Speaker
And an omer is a unit of measurement for for wheat, for flour.

Participation in Omer Ritual and Devotional

00:01:45
Speaker
So we are counting down the days of the omer and the Bible says that each one shall count it for himself.
00:01:51
Speaker
So if you would like to count the omer for yourself today, please feel free to ah join with me and repeat after me in first the blessing and then the counting of the day.
00:02:06
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:02:22
Speaker
Today is the fourth day of the first week and day four. I have counted the Omer.
00:02:35
Speaker
If you are interested in following along with a very short devotional, I will have the link for that in today's description. And this comes to us from shoreshdavid.org, where he has put together, this is a Messianic Jewish congregation, and they have put together an Omer Counting devotional.
00:02:54
Speaker
So I love this. It makes it so easy to find and to do and to incorporate into our day. It is so short and easy.

Wisdom in Proverbs: The Power of Words

00:03:03
Speaker
Such an easy way to obey God's commands, isn't it?
00:03:07
Speaker
So thank you for being here. We are reading in the book of Proverbs. I did a little skipping ahead to see how many more days we have in Proverbs and we will be finishing them on April 22nd.
00:03:18
Speaker
So we have almost a week to go and then we will be finished with the Proverbs, just like we read through all of the Psalms.
00:03:27
Speaker
Today is a really wonderful selection of Proverbs and we have only one section and it's entitled, The Words We Say. So our whole section today is about how we speak.
00:03:40
Speaker
And don't we all need to watch how we speak? I know I do. And first, before the words come out of our mouths, where do they start?
00:03:52
Speaker
That's right, they start out as thoughts. Thankfully, we have Jesus who helps transform us so that we will not be conformed to the patterns of this world. So let's head in.
00:04:04
Speaker
We have some wonderful wise words to listen to today.
00:04:09
Speaker
A fool's words get him into trouble, but a wise person's words keep him safe. A wise person's mind tells his mouth what to say.
00:04:23
Speaker
His words teach people.
00:04:27
Speaker
My child, will be glad if you have a wise heart. I will show my joy when you say what's right. The words of people who do what's right are like rich silver, but a sinful heart is no good.
00:04:46
Speaker
Sinful people get trapped by their sinful words. But a person who does right gets out of trouble.
00:04:55
Speaker
People who please God think about what they are going to say.
00:05:02
Speaker
But sinful people rush to say bad things.
00:05:06
Speaker
Saying the right thing makes everyone happy. word said at the right time is good.
00:05:17
Speaker
Wise people are called good thinkers. Happy words help people learn.
00:05:26
Speaker
Kind words are like honey. They are sweet to the soul and they keep our bodies well.
00:05:36
Speaker
Good words said at the right time are like golden apples on a silver platter.
00:05:44
Speaker
Some people are too loud early in the morning. They may say good things, but it sounds bad to their neighbors.

The Impact of Positive Thinking and Speech

00:05:54
Speaker
Too many words lead to sin, but people who stay quiet are wise. People who tell the truth are safe, but people who tell lies will be found out.
00:06:08
Speaker
A wise person no things knows things, but doesn't show off. A fool talks a lot and says foolish things.
00:06:19
Speaker
People who are careful of what they say guard their lives. But people who talk without thinking will get into trouble.
00:06:28
Speaker
People will think a fool is wise if he stays quiet. They'll think he knows a lot if he doesn't talk. It's foolish to answer before you listen.
00:06:42
Speaker
It shows you're not wise. Be careful of what you say and then you'll stay out of trouble.
00:06:51
Speaker
A kind word will take away anger, but a mean word will bring anger.
00:07:00
Speaker
Saying too many nice things to a neighbor sets a trap for that neighbor. Some people tell other people's secrets, but people you can trust keep secrets.
00:07:13
Speaker
ah so A sinful person starts fights. A person who talks about others turns friends into enemies.
00:07:23
Speaker
A fire goes out if there's no wood to burn. And fussing stops when nobody says bad things about others.
00:07:33
Speaker
Foolish people say bad things about their neighbors. A wise person keeps quiet.
00:07:43
Speaker
Foolish words cut like a sharp sword. But wise words take the hurt away.
00:07:52
Speaker
Bad people look for bad things to say. Their words burn like fire.
00:08:00
Speaker
The north wind brings rain. Words that hurt bring angry looks.
00:08:08
Speaker
Starting a fight is like breaking a dam. So stop before you get into a fight.
00:08:16
Speaker
People who like to make a fuss like to sin.
00:08:21
Speaker
It's good to stay away from fights. Fools are quick to fuss with each other.
00:08:27
Speaker
It's better to be poor than to lie.
00:08:32
Speaker
Some people get rich by telling lies, but those riches will fade like smoke. They will be a trap that leads to death.
00:08:43
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:08:47
Speaker
I'm sure you heard at least more than one that you found that was particularly applicable for you today. I have marked off some that I thought were particularly applicable for today.
00:08:58
Speaker
And they actually correspond with things we've spoken about in the past.
00:09:04
Speaker
A few days ago, we spoke about that. um Oh, I've lost my my words here.
00:09:16
Speaker
Bad people look for bad things to say. Their words burn like fire. If you look for bad bad, you will find bad things. But if you look for good, you will find good things.
00:09:30
Speaker
And so this is similar to that. people Bad people look for bad things to say, and their words burn like fire. But if you look for good things, then you will have good things to say.
00:09:44
Speaker
And that's about thinking in your mind, things that are pleasant, things that are righteous, things that are true, things that are lovely, things that are kind.
00:09:56
Speaker
I'm going to go back to the beginning because we had several that were so, so good.

Living Righteously: Lessons from Ephesians

00:10:01
Speaker
I especially like for the kids, my child, I will be glad if you have a wise heart.
00:10:09
Speaker
I will show my joy when you say what is right.
00:10:15
Speaker
And here we remember that God is always supposed to be the most important one in our lives. People who please God think about what they are going to say, but sinful people rush to say bad things.
00:10:29
Speaker
So if we want to please God, let's talk with him and ask him what it would be good to say and what would not be good to say. And let's make him the most important one in our lives.
00:10:41
Speaker
And we've talked about who is God? What is God? God is love. And in the New Testament, in Ephesians, we are taught to speak and to do things only in love.
00:10:59
Speaker
I have that handy right here.
00:11:08
Speaker
In Ephesians chapter four,
00:11:21
Speaker
Let's see. It moved my space where I was reading from.
00:11:33
Speaker
Speaking the truth in love. This is verse starting at verse 15. It says, Speaking the truth in love. We are to grow up in all ways into Messiah, who is the head.
00:11:46
Speaker
From him the whole body is fitted and held together by every supporting ligament. The proper working of each individual part produces the body's growth for building itself up in love.
00:12:02
Speaker
So I tell you, indeed, I insist on it in the Lord. Walk no longer as the pagans do, stumbling around in their futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance in them due to the hardness of their heart.
00:12:22
Speaker
Since they are past feeling, they have turned themselves over to indecency for the practice of every kind of normality immorality with greed for more. However, you did not learn Messiah in this way.
00:12:37
Speaker
If indeed you have heard him and were taught with him as the truth is in Jesus, with respect to your former lifestyle, you are to lay aside the old corrupted self by its deceitful desires, be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
00:13:01
Speaker
So lay aside lying And each one of you speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, yet do not sin.
00:13:16
Speaker
Do not let the sun go down on your anger, nor give the devil a foothold. The one who steals must steal no longer. Instead, he must work, doing something useful with his own hands, so he may have something to share with the one who has need.
00:13:34
Speaker
Let no harmful word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for building others up according to the need, so that it gives grace to those who hear it.
00:13:47
Speaker
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness and rage and anger and quarreling and slander, along with all malice,
00:14:00
Speaker
Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Jesus also forgave you. And we had a lot of other stuff relating to the words of the mouth.
00:14:16
Speaker
But a lot of what that was talking about was what comes out of our mouths.

Mindful Speech and Prayer for Kindness

00:14:20
Speaker
And that's what we are reading about today. So let's speak the truth in love and let's speak the truth.
00:14:26
Speaker
Let's be slow to speak and fast to listen and especially to listen to God. And that is our daily application today.
00:14:38
Speaker
So I hope that you will be mindful as I will be mindful today of what comes out of my mouth. And it can be hard because we are set it said in the Bible who can tame the tongue?
00:14:48
Speaker
God can. So let's focus on our words today first coming from our mind, because as Jesus taught us, if you even think about it, you've already committed the sin.
00:15:00
Speaker
So let's not entertain angry words, hurtful words. If you start to think about hurtful words, change to the channel. Think about something that is pleasant and kind and lovely, something that is of God.
00:15:15
Speaker
Don't let that stronghold be a stronghold in your life. Let's break down bitterness and rage and unforgiveness, and let's instead build up strongholds of compassion and words that build each other up.
00:15:29
Speaker
Let us have no unkind words come out of our mouth today if possible. Let's pray for that. Lord, I pray that you control our mouths today and keep us from speaking words that are hurtful to each other, that are unkind.
00:15:43
Speaker
Stop those words from even being thoughts in our mind, Lord, because the thoughts are what start the words and out of the mouth comes the overflow of the heart. Transform our heart, Lord, and give us hearts that are soft and tender, not hard, and give us compassion and love and peace and joy and replace the bitterness and the anger and the hurtful words that want to come out of our mouth with love.
00:16:08
Speaker
And it's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
00:16:13
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today, whether you were listening or whether you were watching. Either way,

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:16:18
Speaker

00:16:28
Speaker
