Thank you for joining me as we both count the Omer today AND have our  daily Bible reading session! As promised, here is the link for a  downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for  yourself:  https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today we have a double dose of blessing as we learn about the connection  between the days of Passover, counting of the Omer, the 50 days later that God gave us the Torah, and the day of Pentecost, the giving of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples 50 days after Jesus rose from the  grave!

In our proverbs reading today we will read the topics of: Fighting and  Hurting, Telling the Truth, and Being Rich and Poor. In our discussion  today we will tie in using our riches to show God HE is the most  important to us with the counting of the Omer, and some readings from  the Tree of Life Bible App, written by Daniah Greenburg, about First  Fruits Offering: How Declaration Multiplies the Value of Increase, and  how "First Fruits commemorates the first harvest of the season, the  Barley Harvest, and how it is FULFILLED in Jesus' resurrection as the  "firstfruits of life from the dead!" (Article written by Daniah Greenburg, Tree of Life Bible App) God is SOOO GOOD to tie in our daily reading with the season! For our daily application let us all be  encouraged to give abundantly, both to others and to God, to show that  we recognize that EVERYTHING good comes from God and belongs to HIM! May  your giving be multiplied and you give glory to God Most High during  this season of fruitfulness and remembrance.

Introduction to Bible Reading and Counting the Omer

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello everybody today is Friday April 18 2025 and you are here with Robin at in the family way coaching. We are here for both our homework counting and for our daily Bible reading.
00:00:17
Speaker
We are reading through the Bible this year using the day by day kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley.
00:00:25
Speaker
And we are marking off our days on the calendar. So if you have one of those and you are choosing to count down your commitment, ah marking off your commitment, now is the time to get out your calendar because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:39
Speaker
i have my sticker on there. It's getting full. We have a full month here. We have a little over a week and a half. We have about a week and a half to go for this month. Wow, it is moving right along.
00:00:53
Speaker
Well, I am so glad that you are here with me, whether you are following along on your favorite podcast and just listening, or whether you are watching the video with me. Thank you so much for being here. I'm so glad that God has led you to this event and that you are choosing to make the commitment to read the Bible with me every day.

Significance of the Omer in Messianic Judaism

00:01:11
Speaker
We are counting down on the days of the Omer. There are 50 days, and I thought I would give you a little bit more backstory on it. I've been giving you a little bit of information each day, but I just wanna make sure if you've missed a day that you understand what I'm doing and why.
00:01:27
Speaker
i have been attending a Messianic Jewish congregation, and so you may think of it as just a Jewish holiday, but that is not so. If you read your Bible, it says that it is meant to be a lasting,
00:01:40
Speaker
ah everlasting thing that we do. So I have decided to obey and honor God by counting the Omer.

First Fruits and Jesus's Resurrection

00:01:48
Speaker
What is an Omer? Well, this is after Passover, which you know we just celebrated a week ago almost.
00:01:57
Speaker
We have what's called first fruits. And first fruits commemorates the first harvest of the season. And this is a holiday, an appointed time. I should say it's considered a minor holiday, but it is an appointed time set by God.
00:02:12
Speaker
for people to bring in the barley harvest. It's the barley harvest and it is fulfilled in the New Testament by Jesus's resurrection as the first fruits of life from the dead.
00:02:26
Speaker
Because Jesus took care of death for all of us, we now have eternal life in him. And he tells us that surely we shall not die, but we'll have everlasting life.
00:02:39
Speaker
And so the counting of the omer An omer is a measure of of, unit of measurement in the Bible, and it was used to measure the harvest as well.
00:02:50
Speaker
And so the counting of the omer starts at the ah
00:02:58
Speaker
first fruits, which is right after Passover, and it continues as a countdown 50 days later to Shavuot, and Shavuot is the day
00:03:13
Speaker
that ah is is is remembered for God giving the Torah.

Shavuot, Torah, and Holy Spirit

00:03:23
Speaker
I'm gonna flip to over here. the second It is the second of three pilgrimage feasts and Shavuot commemorates the final harvest of spring.
00:03:32
Speaker
It is fulfilled in the New Testament with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem and the first mass harvest of souls. So you see, these are not simply Jewish holidays.
00:03:45
Speaker
These are holidays that God set apart, just like Passover long time ago, because we know Jesus was the Passover lamb. So I want us to make connection for those of us who don't have a lot of background in this kind of stuff.
00:04:01
Speaker
This is God's fulfillment of the Old Testament.

Jesus and Old Testament Laws

00:04:05
Speaker
And Jesus said, I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. And this was a command.
00:04:14
Speaker
A command is a type of rule or a law. We think of the laws as just the 10 commandments, but what are the 10 commandments? They are rules. And Jesus came to fulfill these.
00:04:26
Speaker
And so it's important for us to understand as Christians, how God and Jesus fulfilled what he gave us in the Old Testament with the new. So we are going to count the Omer today, which is traditionally done by starting with a blessing.
00:04:44
Speaker
And then we just simply say the day that it is. So if you feel led to count the Omer with me today, I have saved this for counting it with you. Then please repeat after me and you too will have counted the Omer today.
00:05:01
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:05:19
Speaker
Today is the fifth day of the first week and day five. I have counted the Omer.
00:05:31
Speaker
Thank you so much for counting the Omer with me, those of you who chose to do so.

Omer Devotional Practices

00:05:35
Speaker
If you are interested in your own little devotional that counts the Omer, I am reading from shereshdavid.org's downloads, and they have a wonderful little Omer devotional that goes for the 50 days of Omer, and each day gives a theme.
00:05:53
Speaker
So for instance, today is pray for Israel, whereas yesterday was pray for the United States. And then it gives a scripture verse. And then it gives you some thoughts.
00:06:05
Speaker
And then it gives you a challenge of how to pray. And that's it. So thank you for joining me as we counted the Omer and learned a little bit more about the feast and Shavuot.
00:06:19
Speaker
I will repeat that during the counting of the Omer for those who may miss a day because ah not everybody has the opportunity or ability to read, every to listen with me here every day.
00:06:30
Speaker
And if you skip a day, I don't want you to miss out on this important information. So thank you for that.

Practical Wisdom from Proverbs

00:06:36
Speaker
And without further ado, let's head into our daily reading, which is coming from the Proverbs.
00:06:42
Speaker
As I said yesterday, we have until April 22nd in the Proverbs, and each day is giving us very wise and practical application of thoughts. Today, we are going to read from a couple of different sections.
00:06:58
Speaker
I really love the way Karen Henley has set these apart. If you are interested in your own copy of the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley, then ah head up over to Amazon because that's where I got my copy.
00:07:13
Speaker
And it is great. So it gives the Bible in storybook format in chronological order. And it's ah it's the big story from Genesis to Revelation. So it doesn't have every single story with every single detail.
00:07:28
Speaker
Instead, this is focusing on God's big story. And it gives us a lot in it. It's not just for kids.
00:07:39
Speaker
So our first section of Proverbs today is entitled Fighting and Hurting. What happens to people who get rich by stealing? Their own lives are taken away.
00:07:53
Speaker
Let's say a good person follows a bad person. The good person is like clear water that gets mud in it. That's dirty, huh?
00:08:05
Speaker
Rocks are heavy, sand makes a big load. A fool daring you to do wrong is the biggest load.
00:08:17
Speaker
Don't plan to hurt your neighbor. He lives near you and trusts you. Don't blame people when they have not hurt you.
00:08:27
Speaker
Don't say, I'll get even with you for being mean to me. Wait for God, he will take care of things.
00:08:36
Speaker
God hates six things. No, seven things are hateful to him. One, acting like you're better than others. Two, telling lies.
00:08:50
Speaker
Three, killing people who have not done anything wrong. Four, planning sin. Five, hurrying to do what's wrong.
00:09:03
Speaker
Six, getting others into trouble with your lies. And seven, starting fights in the family.
00:09:15
Speaker
Be happy to have a bite of dry bread and peas. That's better than a big dinner with fighting.
00:09:23
Speaker
Some people are angry about what others did to them. Their hearts are harder than the walls of a fort. Fussing keeps friends apart like a gate with iron bars.
00:09:39
Speaker
Some people fight about things that are none of their business. They're like people who pull on a dog's ears.
00:09:48
Speaker
Telling the truth is our next selection of Proverbs today. People who plan sin have hearts full of lies. but people who bring peace have hearts full of joy.
00:10:03
Speaker
Telling the truth is like giving a kiss.
00:10:09
Speaker
Some people trick others. They say, i was just joking. They're like crazy people who shoot at you.
00:10:19
Speaker
God doesn't like it when people lie about how big something is. He doesn't like it when people lie about how much it weighs.
00:10:29
Speaker
Money that people get the wrong way will get used up.
00:10:36
Speaker
Money that people earn a little at a time will make more money.
00:10:42
Speaker
If people lie to get food, it might taste sweet, but it ends up like stones in their mouth.
00:10:52
Speaker
People who want more and more bring trouble to their families
00:10:58
Speaker
Sinful people will take money to keep quiet. They'll keep quiet instead of saying what is true.
00:11:06
Speaker
A person who tells the truth says what really happened. A person who lies about what happened will get into trouble. A person who lies will laugh at what's fair.

Wealth, Gratitude, and Giving Back

00:11:21
Speaker
Some people let a sinful person go, but they put the good person in jail. God hates both of these things.
00:11:32
Speaker
Don't treat people who do wrong as if they're right, and don't treat people who do right as if they are wrong.
00:11:41
Speaker
Our last section today is entitled, Being Rich and Poor.
00:11:48
Speaker
Use your riches to show God he is the most important to you. Give him the first part of everything you earn. Then your barns will be full and there will be no more room and your wine will fill your tubs.
00:12:04
Speaker
People who trust in riches will get into trouble. A person's riches may save his life, but a poor person is not even in danger.
00:12:15
Speaker
If you're poor, be happy and look up to God. That's better than being rich and having problems. What good is money in a fool's hand?
00:12:26
Speaker
He won't spend it to learn things. He doesn't even want to be wise.
00:12:33
Speaker
Rich people's riches are like a fort to them, and they think riches will keep them safe. Rich people and poor people are alike. God made them all.
00:12:46
Speaker
Rich people rule over poor people. People who borrow money serve the people who lend it.
00:12:54
Speaker
Don't get all tired out trying to get rich. Be wise, control yourself. Riches don't last. They seem to grow wings.
00:13:04
Speaker
They seem to fly into the sky like birds. When you're full, you don't want honey. But when you're hungry, even foods you don't like taste good.
00:13:18
Speaker
Be happy to be poor and right. That's better than being rich and wrong.
00:13:25
Speaker
People in a hurry to get rich will get into trouble.
00:13:30
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:13:34
Speaker
Our daily application, while we had so many, I had marked off several verses that I thought were very good, but i always wanna ask God, what do you want our daily application to be?
00:13:46
Speaker
And we are currently in First Fruits. So I was going to read a little bit about First Fruits
00:13:57
Speaker
on how do we celebrate?
00:14:07
Speaker
Think about what things that God has provided for you in abundance and prepare first fruits offering. Do it out of gratitude, love and joy, not out of obligation.
00:14:19
Speaker
whether it's a financial gift to your favorite charity, a handmade scarf for your pastor, or the first tomato out of your backyard garden. There's always something that we can present to God out of love.
00:14:33
Speaker
And that love offering can remind us and the people around us of God's goodness and grace. So doesn't it make sense that we would read today about being rich and poor and to use your riches to show God he is the most important to you?
00:14:49
Speaker
Give him the first part of everything you earn. Then your barns will be full and there will be no more room your wine will fill your tubs. People in a hurry to get rich will get into trouble.
00:15:08
Speaker
Oh my gosh, I just lost what I was gonna say. I was so enjoying that. um And Jesus tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and the rest of what we need will be given to us.
00:15:20
Speaker
So during this season of harvest, where we would traditionally be bringing in the harvest, I'd like to encourage all of us to take a special time to think it each day, and especially today, about the many ways that God has blessed you, how he has provided for you, and how everything that he has given us, it really belongs to him anyways.
00:15:46
Speaker
So let's give back to God and not be greedy with what we have and not to give out of a sense of obligation, but as we read out of a sense of joy gratitude for what everything God has given us today and throughout the year.
00:16:01
Speaker
Because a harvest is something that you have waited for. it didn't just happen in one day. You had to work, but the harvest is from God and he will multiply it.
00:16:15
Speaker
And there's another selection here in Shavuot.
00:16:24
Speaker
Oh, I already read that one. That's not it. Maybe it's in.
00:16:35
Speaker
Oh, I thought that was it. Hmm.
00:16:43
Speaker
I guess they repeated it both on Omer and Shavuot.
00:16:48
Speaker
I know I read something. Oh, here we go.

First Fruits Offering and Biblical Patterns

00:16:50
Speaker
First fruits offering. Now I'm getting this information from the Tree of Life Bible app. The Tree of Life version of the Bible is a messianic ah Bible.
00:17:01
Speaker
So it incorporates both some of the true um original language, such as Adonai for the Lord and Shalom for peace, because sometimes those words don't translate ah very easily.
00:17:14
Speaker
ah with depth. They don't translate with depth, such as the word shalom. And so they use some of the original words in Hebrew. And so i we use this at the Messianic congregation where I attend.
00:17:30
Speaker
The Bible provides, this is entitled First Fruits Offering, Trusting God's Biblical Patterns. The Bible provides,
00:17:41
Speaker
oops, where did it go?
00:17:46
Speaker
Oh darn, I clicked.
00:17:51
Speaker
The Bible provides such practical wisdom for success in everyday life. Counting your blessings is not only a good habit for staying thankful to God, it is a yearly biblical pattern for multiplying your fruitness by adding a window of increase into your thought life.
00:18:10
Speaker
And here's how this pattern works.
00:18:16
Speaker
Just like God uses multiplying the love between a husband and wife to add new children to a growing family, God loves multiplying your effectiveness by adding opportunities for you to trust Him to meet you at every appointed time of your journey through life.
00:18:35
Speaker
Our Father in Heaven is a creative genius. He loves to inspire us with ideas, give us creative solutions to problems, and help us find new pathways to follow Him regularly.
00:18:51
Speaker
The rhythm of working six days and resting on the seventh is actually a binary concept. We step, then he steps. We step, and then he steps.
00:19:06
Speaker
Our step takes 144 hours and his step it takes 24 hours. We do what we want for 144 hours and he asks us to trust him to keep our life going while we rest for 24 hours.
00:19:26
Speaker
This is not equality. It is obedience, which God values more than sacrifice. Honoring God is trusting him.
00:19:38
Speaker
In the Feast of Weeks, God asks us to count seven weeks of seven after Passover to prepare to bring the first fruits offering on the 50th day.
00:19:50
Speaker
Jewish people also believe that this is the day that the law, the Ten Commandments, was given to Moses by God. This Feast of Weeks is a biblical holiday thanking God for giving the words of life.

The Importance of Giving and Sowing

00:20:05
Speaker
That is a beautiful time to celebrate God giving us his people, people of the book, the covenant promise. In that promised covenant, we are commanded to give gifts to God.
00:20:21
Speaker
Why do we give to God? Because when you invest your time, where you invest your time, talents and finances, shows what you actually value.
00:20:32
Speaker
What you've you value shows the world what you believe. Believing God is the one who makes things grow, increase, is paramount, is most important to believing he cares about your life and can make you grow.
00:20:51
Speaker
No one would plant a screwdriver and expect it to grow another screwdriver, would they? Giving your harvest to God to make another harvest. In fact, a bumper crop is what the Feast of First Fruits is all about.
00:21:07
Speaker
He asks us to give a special offering during this season. specifically on June 7th, 8th, and 9th this year, to thank him and watch him grow something extra special in your life.
00:21:22
Speaker
In fact, your super abundant increase depends on it.
00:21:29
Speaker
So here's how you can figure out where your first fruit offering is so you can sow it wisely. Be on the lookout for firsts that you can give to God.
00:21:41
Speaker
For instance, if you try a new mess recipe for muffins, make sure to make enough to give a batch to a neighbor. Be on the lookout for surprises that God suddenly manifests that can provide feed for an unexpected need.
00:21:57
Speaker
Such as when they received a refund for a mortgage insurance popped up, they sewed it back into the mortgage and gave a special offering beyond the tithe to say thank you.
00:22:09
Speaker
Be creative about giving to be a blessing to someone else.
00:22:16
Speaker
Be intentional about the place where you give and be resounding in your giving.
00:22:26
Speaker
When Jews for Jesus gave us our board member, our first board member, I sewed my daughter's singing gift into their new music ministry project the following year. And when the union of messianic congregations and synagogues sowed into my son's education on a trip to Israel, Dania writes, I provided my children's curriculum for their entire conference to say thank you, and so on.

Encouragement to Spread the Message

00:22:54
Speaker
And that article was written by Dania Greenberg, and it's posted on the Tree of Life Bible app, if you are curious about that. So when I read today's Proverbs about being rich and poor and using your riches to show God he is the most important to you and to give him the first part of everything you earn, it just really spoke to me that that is perfectly timed with this time that we are in.
00:23:21
Speaker
And so I wanted to share all of that with you to show that God does not have coincidences. And this is how I know that that is what is our daily application today. So I hope that you are just as excited as I am about God's sowing with you and sowing with me.
00:23:37
Speaker
And I know I feel like God is just filling me with his spirit this season. And I pray that you also feel the same. And if you feel God's light, I encourage you to please click that light button and show it so that other people will want to hear this message and also be encouraged with their first fruits and to count the Omer and to know about God's many blessings in their life.
00:24:00
Speaker
It's all about spreading the word about reading God's word. It has nothing to do with me or for this event or for my pride of any kind, because it's not for me. It's all about God.
00:24:13
Speaker
And I want us to show show our light in the world for God. So thank you so much for being here today, whether you have been listening or whether you have been watching. And I pray that you have a very blessed day today.
00:24:26
Speaker
And I will be here again tomorrow.
