Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost. As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has appointed for us to observe we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare) today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Congregation Shoresh David in Florida:   https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today we are reading Ecclesiastes chapters 8-10. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the wisdom in knowing the right thing to say at the right time, which includes knowing when not to say anything at all! We will discuss the benefit of being peaceful when someone is angry with us, as it can have the effect of making up for mistakes made. We will talk about making sure that when we DO speak we do so with kind, loving words. We will talk about speaking quietly rather than shouting and taking care not to say bad things about people because negative comments about someone have a way of being found out by the one you spoke about.

If you would like to join me LIVE for the daily reading you can register to attend on my site, here:   https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/schedule

Registration for the live event is a tiered pricing event, so you are not required to pay to attend, only if you feel led. Introduction and Purpose

00:00:03
Speaker
Shalom everybody. Today is Saturday. It's April 26th, 2025 and you're here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for our daily Bible reading as well as the counting of the Omer.
00:00:18
Speaker
I am so glad that you are joining me whether you are listening in on your favorite podcasting app or whether you are watching the video. Thank you for being here today. We are reading through the Bible this year using the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley.
00:00:35
Speaker
And if you are keeping track of your daily commitment to read Karen Henley's version of the Bible, then take that calendar out because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:46
Speaker
We are almost into May, and if you are looking to start fresh with ah keeping track of your daily commitment in May, I will have a new calendar for you to download in a couple of days.

Bible Reading Tools and Resources

00:01:00
Speaker
Let's see, we have, let's see, Thursday will be the first. So next week on Thursday, there will be the calendar for May 1st available. So if you have not already familiarized yourself with how to get that, I'm going to tell you.
00:01:14
Speaker
head over to www.inthe.org. that FamilyWayCoaching.com and click on the link for Read the Bible in One Year and there I have a download for you.
00:01:29
Speaker
It's absolutely free. You don't have to input your email address. You don't have to subscribe to anything. It's just there for you to download the calendar, even if you just need a calendar for your wall or your refrigerator so that you can keep track of the days or of your daily Bible reading.
00:01:46
Speaker
And why would you want to do that? Because it is very helpful when you look back and see your achievement. This is no small project reading the Bible each day.
00:01:58
Speaker
And by looking at that little calendar where you've marked it down every day that you ah participated with listening to that day's reading, one, it can be hard to keep track of where you left off if if you don't have time every day and you binge listen to a couple of days at a time.
00:02:15
Speaker
and then you know which one you've listened to and you think, oh, I don't need to start that one. But I want you to be encouraged by the progress that you see to know that you finished another month and then another month.
00:02:29
Speaker
And then that way you can look back and say, this was the year i read the Bible each year. I heard the Bible read each day of the year. And that's a big commitment.
00:02:40
Speaker
There is so much to learn in God's Word. i just am very passionate about spreading the Word, about reading God's Word. And it's not enough just to read it. I am very passionate about the fact that there is daily application in every single day's reading, even though we're using a kid's Bible.
00:03:01
Speaker
And these are not watered down stories. This is a great version. So that's why i have made the calendar available and for everybody to be able to download and have available for free so you can keep track of your commitment.
00:03:15
Speaker
I love that. So thank you for joining me and I hope that you are keeping track of your commitment in one way or another so that you can look back and see what you have accomplished this year.

Counting the Omer: Significance and Practice

00:03:27
Speaker
So let's begin with our counting of the Omer. When I was at service today, we did the counting and that's where I heard the rabbi say ah the correct pronunciation.
00:03:38
Speaker
I've been saying Omer because it looks like Omer, like Homer without an H, but he pronounced it Omer. It almost sounds French. But ah it's of course not French.
00:03:51
Speaker
like I don't think so anyway. ah So it's pronounced Omer. And i try to pronounce those words correctly as as I learned about them. And we are in the time of counting ah the weeks, which is the time between Passover And ah we're in the ah the first harvest, ah the weeks of first harvest, and that would be Bukurim.
00:04:17
Speaker
And when we get to the end, the final day, where ah we have the also the remembrance of Pentecost, that happened with the giving of the Holy Spirit. In Hebrew, it's the final day of the first harvest, the first fruits, and that is called Shavuot, like oatmeal, Shavuot. It looks like Shavuot.
00:04:37
Speaker
ah like Ottoman, but it's Shavuot, like oatmeal.
00:04:44
Speaker
So if you are interested in counting with the Omer today, go ahead and just repeat after me. And I was very happy to see ah that it's ah it's a rather standardized counting.
00:04:57
Speaker
It's not something that varies. There is the traditional blessing, and this is the same blessing that I'm going to read now that was what was given today in the synagogue.
00:05:09
Speaker
and the actual wording of the counting can vary, but it includes all of the same exact information. It includes the which day of the second week, which which day of and which week we're in, and then the total day.
00:05:25
Speaker
So we will have all of that in our counting of the Omer today. So if you would like to count the Omer with me, just repeat after me.
00:05:36
Speaker
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:05:52
Speaker
Today is the sixth day of the second week and day 13. I have counted the Omer.
00:06:06
Speaker
And if you are interested in your own daily counting on your own time, ah there is a great devotional that I've been reading from. And I just have that on my phone. And it's from ShoreshDavid.org. And it's a free download from them.
00:06:21
Speaker
And I will have the link to that in the description below.

Ecclesiastes Chapter Summaries

00:06:28
Speaker
So we have been reading through the book of Ecclesiastes, which has been written by King Solomon. And today's readings will encompass chapters eight, nine, and 10.
00:06:44
Speaker
The first chapter, chapter eight, has been entitled, A Bright Face.
00:06:51
Speaker
Wise thinking makes your face look happy. It changes your face from looking sad
00:06:59
Speaker
Obey the king. You promised God you would. you would Don't be in a hurry to leave the king. Don't take the side of what's wrong. and Don't try to do bad things.
00:07:12
Speaker
The king does what he wants and people obey him. So who can tell him? You shouldn't say that.
00:07:20
Speaker
Obey the king and then you won't get hurt.
00:07:25
Speaker
Wise people know the right time to do things. They know the right way. There's a right time for everything. There's a right time even if your troubles are hard on you.
00:07:41
Speaker
Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. Nobody can hold back the wind and nobody can keep from dying. And sin does not let sinners get away.
00:07:54
Speaker
I was trying to learn about everything and here's what I saw. Some people boss others around, but they are hurting themselves.
00:08:06
Speaker
Let's say the judge says someone did wrong, and that person should get in trouble, and it should happen quickly. If it doesn't, then everyone will choose to do wrong.
00:08:20
Speaker
A bad person might do wrong things hundred times, and that person might live a long time anyway. But I know it is still better to obey God.
00:08:32
Speaker
Sinful people don't obey God, so they'll have trouble.
00:08:38
Speaker
There's something else that's not good. Sometimes people who do right get treated like sinners, and sometimes people who sin get treated like people who do right.
00:08:49
Speaker
And that's not good.
00:08:53
Speaker
I say, enjoy life. There's nothing better than to eat, drink, and be happy. And then you'll be happy when you work. You'll be happy all your life.
00:09:06
Speaker
Chapter nine, and it's entitled, and Enjoy. Anybody who is alive has hope. A live dog is better than a dead lion.
00:09:19
Speaker
Enjoy living with the one you love, the one you married. Enjoy the person all your life.
00:09:27
Speaker
Do what your hands find to do. Do it with all your might.
00:09:34
Speaker
Fast people don't always win the race. and Strong people don't always win the fight. Wise people don't always get food. and Smart people don't always get rich.
00:09:48
Speaker
Good workers are not always the people everyone likes. Time passes for all of them and things just happen to all of them.
00:10:00
Speaker
I saw something happen one time and what I saw told me about wise people. It made me think. Once there was a little town and not many people lived there, but a strong king came to fight against that town.
00:10:16
Speaker
His army stood in a circle around the town and the king and his army tried to get in. They tried to break down the gate and the walls. Now a poor but a wise man lived in the town, and he is the one who saved the town.
00:10:35
Speaker
He saved it by being wise. So I said, it's better to be wise than strong. But nobody remembered the man.
00:10:47
Speaker
People don't think much of a poor man's thinking. They don't listen to what he says.
00:10:55
Speaker
Listen to the quiet words of a wise person, and that's better than listening to the shouts from the king of fools.
00:11:05
Speaker
Our final chapter is entitled, A Sharp Axe.
00:11:10
Speaker
Dead flies make perfumes smell bad, and a little foolish thinking hurts wise thinking.
00:11:19
Speaker
Fools don't know anything, even when they're out for a walk. They show everybody how foolish they are. If your boss gets angry, don't give up.
00:11:33
Speaker
Be full of peace, and that can make up for mistakes.
00:11:39
Speaker
If you dig a pit, you may fall in, and if you break down a wall, a snake might bite you. If you cut stones from hills, you might get hurt. And if you chop wood, you might be in danger.
00:11:53
Speaker
You need to be very strong if your ax is not sharp. And being wise is like having a sharp ax. It helps you do your job well.
00:12:06
Speaker
A wise person says kind, loving words, but the words of fools get them into trouble. At first, their words are foolish and their words end up being crazy.
00:12:21
Speaker
The fool talks, talks, and talks.
00:12:26
Speaker
Fools get tired from their work and they can't even get to town. Be sorry if your king acts like a young child. Be happy if your king is great.
00:12:38
Speaker
Be sorry if your leaders eat before it's time to eat. Be happy if your leaders eat at the right time. They eat to grow strong, not to get drunk.
00:12:52
Speaker
Lazy people have houses with roofs that sag. Lazy people don't work, so their houses leak.
00:13:01
Speaker
Don't say bad things about the king. Don't even think bad things about him. A little bird might tell what you said.
00:13:13
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.

Applying Wisdom to Everyday Life

00:13:18
Speaker
Ecclesiastes is ah a lot like the Proverbs, where it's not a continuous story per se. It's just a lot of different topics and of writing, but it's it's a lot like the Proverbs, isn't it?
00:13:35
Speaker
So there was a lot of wisdom in today's writings and in today's reading, but the overarching theme was that of wisdom, wisdom itself.
00:13:47
Speaker
And we had a number of references to speaking. And we're gonna tie this in because ah we're going to use these to build off of ah concepts, principles that we've already learned in other readings, such as wise thinking makes your face look happy.
00:14:10
Speaker
And we know that wisdom is ah the beginning of wisdom. is making God the most important one. And yesterday we learned that Jesus said that he is the way, the the way ah life and the truth, and not to go about things the world's way.
00:14:32
Speaker
So the world's way would be not wise, and doing things God's way is wise. And one of the things that this is teaching about today is when ah we speak.
00:14:47
Speaker
And there is a time for everything. We learned that the other day where there is a time for for ah war, a time for peace, a time for reaping, a time for sowing.
00:14:59
Speaker
And wise people know the right time to do things. They know the right way. There's a right time for everything.
00:15:10
Speaker
And there's a right time even if your troubles are hard on you. And it can be especially important in life to know when it's the right time to say something and when it's not the right time to say something.
00:15:26
Speaker
Listen to the quiet words of a wise person. That's better than listening to shouts from the king of fools. We don't need to shout when we are giving our wisdom, but and it's important for how we word our words.
00:15:45
Speaker
We spoke previously about our words ah only being used to build each other up. And so a wise person says kind, loving words, but the words of fools get them into trouble.
00:16:02
Speaker
So it's a there's always a right time and a wrong time to say something. Sometimes it's best just to keep our mouth closed about something or it will cause trouble to respond.
00:16:22
Speaker
Don't say bad things about the king. Don't even think bad things about him. Or a little bird might tell what you said. This can go for anybody. Don't say bad things about people.
00:16:34
Speaker
We spoke about that in our reading the other day about not saying bad things about people or they will say bad things about us. So today's reading incorporates a lot of what we've already read and talks a little bit about that.
00:16:52
Speaker
in and a lot of different things, but overarching theme about wisdom.
00:17:00
Speaker
And I love how it says being wise is like having a sharp ax. It helps you do your job well.
00:17:08
Speaker
And if your boss gets angry, don't give up, be full of peace. That can make up for mistakes. So as we are working and doing our job with wisdom,
00:17:22
Speaker
If our boss gets angry with us, don't give up, don't get angry and not to say things bad to them or about them because one, people can get that back to him or her, and then they will hear about what you said, but be full of peace and that can make up for mistakes.
00:17:49
Speaker
And when we do speak, It should be with kind and loving words. Everything we do it should be done with love. We are taught in the New Testament that if we do something without love, it's not worth anything.
00:18:04
Speaker
And especially when we are speaking, we need to speak not with hate or with hurt or with unkind words or with foolish talk, but with kind, loving words.
00:18:17
Speaker
because the words of fools will get us into trouble. At first their words are foolish and the words end up being crazy and the fool talks and talks and talks. And how many times has it just seemed that the more we talk, the worse it gets.
00:18:33
Speaker
So there we go back to, there's a time for everything. And the those who are wise know the right time for everything. So sometimes it's the right time to
00:18:47
Speaker
close our mouth and to not speak at all.
00:18:52
Speaker
It's kind of like ah when, I cannot remember his name off the top of my head, but when a king wanted this man to curse,
00:19:04
Speaker
the the Jewish people, and he wanted to pay him to, he wanted to pay this man, the king wanted to pay this man to do it. And so the man asked God if he could curse them, and God said, no.
00:19:18
Speaker
And he asked again, and God said, don't say anything good or bad. That's wisdom. and Sometimes it's better to not say anything at all.
00:19:30
Speaker
Don't say anything good. Don't say anything bad. Just keep your mouth closed. And we don't need to shout it because the quiet words of a wise person are better than shouts from the king of fools.
00:19:47
Speaker
So that is our daily application today. We're going to be pulled those little bits from throughout our reading today to focus on one central theme.
00:20:01
Speaker
And I hope that you feel that that was very helpful for you. And I hope that you feel that that lit your light today.
00:20:09
Speaker
I know that it definitely gave me some perspective. Uh, I know, especially even today, there are times when I should have just not responded and not said anything.
00:20:23
Speaker
And it's so hard in that moment when somebody is yelling things foolishly. at you and blaming you for things that have absolutely nothing to do with you. You didn't affect those things.
00:20:36
Speaker
And it can be so hard to tell them what a fool they are and to say nasty things back.
00:20:44
Speaker
But in wisdom, we need to know to make God the most important thing and God is love. And so not to say anything unkind, but to speak kind and loving words and to know when the time is to not even say anything at all, whether it's loving or not.
00:21:02
Speaker
Sometimes it's best just to be keeping our mouth closed and to be be peaceful because being peaceful can cover make up for many mistakes.
00:21:15
Speaker
So thank you for listening with me today.
