Today we will read 1 Kings 2: 3-16. We will read about the death of King David and the advice he gives to his son, Solomon, before this happens. We will have the joy of reading about God coming to Solomon in a dream, asking him what he wants God to give him. Solomon asks for wisdom, which we recently learned, starts with making God the most important one in our lives. God responds by telling Solomon that He is pleased with this request and that wisdom will indeed be given to Solomon, as well as other things that he did NOT ask for! We will discuss that Jesus taught us to first seek God's kingdom and the rest of what we need will be given to us, the same way this happened for Solomon. It is my prayer that all of us listening to today's reading will make the choice to make God the most important one in their lives so that we may become wise, as well.

Solomon's Story: Request for Wisdom

00:03:00
Speaker
Alright, well let's go ahead and pick up in 1 Kings. We are going to head into chapter 2 where we are reading about Solomon. Solomon was King David's son and now he has been appointed as king after David.
00:03:15
Speaker
David is still alive and we're going to see what happens with that today and see about the first days of King Solomon, which is the title of today's reading.
00:03:26
Speaker
This is 1 Kings chapter 2 and it's verses 3 through 16.
00:03:32
Speaker
If you ever feel like you want more details about what is going on in today's reading, always be encouraged to pick up your big Bible or head over to a Bible app, however it's easiest for you.
00:03:44
Speaker
I know nowadays I've actually been deferring to just the internet and searching, and that brings me up to like Bible Hub or something like that. And if you just do an internet search for 1 2,
00:03:58
Speaker
then you would see what was going on in today's reading with more detail if you are curious and hungry for more of God's Word. And you can't wait until tomorrow too.
00:04:11
Speaker
And I also just want to pray that everybody is just loving their day with God today. i am just full of God's spirit and joy today, and I am just so happy to be here with you today.
00:04:23
Speaker
So let's begin. David knew he was going to die, so he told Solomon what to do. I'm going to die soon, said David. So be strong.
00:04:35
Speaker
Be a man. Do what God wants. Follow his laws. Then good will come from what you do, and God will keep the promise he made to me.
00:04:47
Speaker
God said that our family should live the right way. We should follow God no matter what happens. Then people from our family will be the kings of God's people forever.

Solomon's Wisdom Demonstrated

00:05:03
Speaker
Then David died and his body was put in a grave. The grave was in a special part of Jerusalem called the City of David.
00:05:14
Speaker
Samuel wrote a book about what happened in David's time. Nathan wrote a book about David. Gad wrote about David. They wrote about how he ruled.
00:05:25
Speaker
They wrote about his power. They also wrote about the other kingdoms and lands.

Reflections on Wisdom and Prioritizing God

00:05:33
Speaker
Then Solomon became king. God made Solomon great. He was greater than any king God's people had ever had.
00:05:46
Speaker
Now Solomon made a deal with the king of Egypt. Then he married the king's daughter. The king of Egypt gave his daughter a city for a wedding present. Solomon took his new wife to the city of David.
00:06:01
Speaker
Solomon would soon build his palace there. He would build a worship house. He also would build a wall around Jerusalem.
00:06:12
Speaker
God's people were offering gifts to God at altars and in different high places. They couldn't go to the worship house yet because it wasn't yet built.
00:06:22
Speaker
Solomon loved God. He showed it by living the way that David lived. But Solomon did wrong by offering gifts at different high places too.
00:06:35
Speaker
Then Solomon talked to the leaders of the people. They all went to a high place called Gibeon. God's worship tent was there. Inside the tent was a special altar.
00:06:49
Speaker
So Solomon went there and offered one thousand gifts to God. And that night, God came to Solomon in a dream.

Prayer for Wisdom and Guidance

00:07:02
Speaker
Ask me for whatever you want, God said. You have been very kind to me, said Solomon, and you were kind to my father David because he followed you.
00:07:15
Speaker
He followed you no matter what happened. He did what was right because his heart was right. Now you have let me be king, said Solomon.
00:07:27
Speaker
But I'm like a child. I don't know how to be a king. There are more of your people than anyone can count. Who is wise enough to rule your people?
00:07:41
Speaker
Make me wise enough to be their king. Help me understand and what's right and what's wrong.
00:07:51
Speaker
God was so glad to hear Solomon ask to be wise, said. You didn't ask for a long life, said God.
00:08:01
Speaker
You didn't ask for riches for yourself. You did not ask for your enemies to die. You did not ask for anything, but you asked to be wise.
00:08:14
Speaker
So I will give you what you asked for. You will be wiser than anyone who ever lived. You will be wiser than anyone else ever will be.
00:08:28
Speaker
I'll also give you things you did not ask for, said God. I will make you rich. I will make you great. No other king will be like you while you are alive.
00:08:43
Speaker
Obey my laws like your father did. Then i will let you live a long life. Solomon woke up. He knew God had talked to him in a dream.
00:08:56
Speaker
He went back to Jerusalem and stood in front of God's ark box. He offered gifts to God. Then he gave a big dinner party for his leaders.
00:09:08
Speaker
One day, two women came to see King Solomon.

Encouragement to Engage and Share the Message

00:09:13
Speaker
One of them said, we live in the same house. I had a baby there. And three days later, this other woman also had a baby.
00:09:25
Speaker
We were all by ourselves in the house. and In the night, she rolled over on top of her baby and he died. She took my baby while I was sleeping and she put her dead baby next to me.
00:09:40
Speaker
The next morning I saw that the baby was dead, but then looked carefully at him and I saw this was not my baby.
00:09:52
Speaker
no said the other woman. The one that's alive is my baby. The dead baby is hers. No, said the first woman. That dead baby is yours.
00:10:05
Speaker
And the one that's alive is my baby. And they started fighting with each other in front of King Solomon. King Solomon said to one woman, You say that the baby is alive and that it is yours.
00:10:20
Speaker
He said to the other woman, But you say that is your baby that's alive. Then the king asked for a long sword blade. So someone brought a sword to the king.
00:10:33
Speaker
Cut the baby in half, said King Solomon, and each woman can have half. Now the real mother loved her baby and she cried out, no, please don't kill the baby. Just give him to the other woman.
00:10:48
Speaker
Cut him in half, said the other woman. I won't have him and you won't have him either.
00:10:55
Speaker
Don't kill the baby, said Solomon. Give the baby to the first woman. She wants him to live and she is his mother.
00:11:07
Speaker
The people heard what Solomon had done. They thought the king was wonderful. God had made him wise and fair. And that's the end of our reading today.
00:11:22
Speaker
Wow, that was amazing, huh? That was quite ah ah ah a little trick that he played with the woman who was lying. He knew that the real mother would not want the baby to die. Even if she couldn't have the baby, she would not want to see that baby die.
00:11:37
Speaker
And she was willing to give up that baby in order for that baby to just live, even though she wouldn't get to be the baby's mama. And so King Solomon knew that the real mother would not want the baby to die.
00:11:50
Speaker
And so he gave the baby to his real mama. That was so wise. Yesterday, or a couple of days ago rather, we read in the Psalms that making God the most important in our lives is the beginning of wisdom.
00:12:09
Speaker
And we see that that is exactly what King Solomon did. He asked for God to be the most important thing. He was making God the most important one in his life.
00:12:20
Speaker
And he asked for wisdom when God asked him what he wanted. And the Bible tells us to seek his kingdom and to seek him first and everything else will be given to us after that.
00:12:33
Speaker
And that's exactly what God showed us here with Solomon. Solomon didn't ask for riches. He didn't ask for enemies to be killed. Instead, he asked for wisdom.
00:12:45
Speaker
And God was very pleased with that answer. So he not only gave him the wisdom, but he gave him the things that he did not ask for as well. So our daily application today is to seek first God.
00:13:00
Speaker
And God will be the most important thing in our life. And then after that, everything else will follow. We don't need to worry about anything. Jesus tells us that even Solomon, with all his splendor, was not clothed as beautifully as the flowers.
00:13:19
Speaker
God knows what we need before we even ask him. He created us and he knows us and he hears us and he is with us. God knows we need food. And Jesus says, don't go chasing around after all these things like people who don't believe in God.
00:13:35
Speaker
Seek first his kingdom and the rest will be given to you. I love King Solomon for his wisdom, and I have prayed for wisdom as well.
00:13:46
Speaker
And I have prayed this morning for each one of you individually to make God the most important one in your lives so that God will also make you wise.
00:13:57
Speaker
I have prayed for you, Pearl. I have prayed for you, Jedi. I have prayed for you, Forest. I have prayed for you, Diamond. I have prayed for Ruby. i have prayed for Jasper.
00:14:09
Speaker
i have prayed for Charlie. And I am so sorry. I want to say there's one more name and I just can't think of it, Julie. But I have prayed for Chuck. I have prayed for Julie. Cleo, I have prayed for you. And George, i am praying for you.
00:14:23
Speaker
Jeannie, I have prayed for you. I am praying for you, each one of you, that you would make God the most important one in your lives so that you may be wise and that you and that everything else will be given to you after that.
00:14:40
Speaker
So thank you for joining me for today's reading today. Oh, and Helen, I prayed for you today. i prayed for you to make God the most important one in your life as well so that God will give you his wisdom.
00:14:54
Speaker
So if you feel that God has lit your light today, then I hope that you will click that light button at the end. It looks like heart or it looks like a thumbs up, but it's really a light button.
00:15:06
Speaker
And let's spread the word about reading God's word so that everybody can know about making God the most important one in their lives so that they also may be wise and have the rest of what they need provided for them after that wisdom.
00:15:22
Speaker
Thank you for being here today, and I will be here for everybody again tomorrow.
