In today's reading we will read the Book of Malachi. In this book God sends a message to His post exilic population because already they are starting to backslide by not making God the most important one in their lives.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of always bringing our best to God. Everything we have comes from God. It isn't okay to give God leftovers of things we don't want. We want to be sure that whatever we are doing we do for the glory of God and bring God our very best every day. God is faithful to us and loves us every single day. He shows us how to love. He shows us how to be faithful by being faithful to us. We cannot out give God. When we are faithful and bring our best to God He responds by giving us EVEN MORE! Let us be faithful to do the good works that God has prepared ahead of time for us to do. Let us be faithful to do our best in everything we do, for the glory of God. And finally, let us remember to faithful to one another, the way God is faithful to us. He is faithful to forgive us every day. Let us remember to forgive one another and keep our promises to one another and love one another the way God loves us.

Introduction and Commitment to Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome everybody. Today is August 2nd. You are here with Robin and my special guest and friend today who is a viewer. This is my friend Mickey from church and he is going to be joining us today.
00:00:20
Speaker
and i'm going to speak once in a while. He might speak once in a while.
00:00:26
Speaker
So you are with Robin and Mickey. We are within the Family Way Coaching and we are here for our daily Bible reading as we go through the day by day kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:39
Speaker
I'm so glad that Mickey is joining with me today. We are going to be going out for dinner later. So I asked Mickey, do you want to join me for the recording today? and he said, sure. about you hold our calendar for us today?
00:00:54
Speaker
This is our commitment calendar. So if you are following along on that commitment calendar, it's time to take that out and your sticker or however you're marking it off. Because guess what?
00:01:06
Speaker
Mickey, you're about to hear the Bible today. Love it.
00:01:14
Speaker
Thank you for joining along with us today. We are going to be reading the book of

Exploration of Malachi and Its Messages

00:01:19
Speaker
Malachi. The book of Malachi is about three chapters long. And I use the word about because it has a little funky... um ah verse numbering.
00:01:31
Speaker
Like in our day-by-day kids Bible, it references that it goes to chapter five. And I'm like, there's not five chapters in the book of Malachi? course not.
00:01:42
Speaker
But in in our big Bible, it shows three, but then it shows that it has, ah that they've numbered it, like chapter 4.1. Yeah. And I was like, okay, so Malachi is a little bit different.
00:01:57
Speaker
It has ah between three and five chapters, apparently.
00:02:02
Speaker
So we are going to be reading all of the book of Malachi today. Where's Malachi located in the Old Testament? what Where is it at? Well, Malachi, that's a good question, Mickey. Where is the Malachi located in the Old Testament?
00:02:15
Speaker
He is considered to be ah the last prophet. The last prophet, correct. Before ah but Jesus comes. Before New Testament. Before the New Covenant begins. So we are going to be reading. We have, as we said, a couple more days, about a week left of the Old Testament. So after we read Malachi, there will be some events that take place in Ezra.
00:02:38
Speaker
as well So we're going to, we do have Ezra, but he is considered the last prophet. And then we also have Nehemiah. Yeah. the two it yeah The two go together. And so this is taking place after the exile and that's when it takes place.
00:02:54
Speaker
And then after we finish with that, with Ezra and Nehemiah, then we will have the new Testament. Oh my gosh. That's so exciting.
00:03:06
Speaker
So we're going to be, we have a lot to cover today. The book of Malachi is very needy. It has a lot of lessons for us. In the book of Malachi, the prophet Malachi's name actually means my messenger.
00:03:24
Speaker
So we will be hearing from God's messenger. And when he talks about ah the different things, he's going to be talking about both the priests who are already, despite the fact that they have only recently come back from exile.
00:03:41
Speaker
Yeah. He's disappointed because God is disappointed because they are already slipping in to lazy habits. both the people and the brief. That's called backsliding.
00:03:53
Speaker
You're right. That is called backsliding. So if you have ever experienced in your own life backsliding, let's raise our hand. Oh, and I see you too out there.
00:04:04
Speaker
We all have a tendency to backslide. And so that's why we have these daily applications. Because every day there is something for us to learn because we can't remember everything. We are not perfect.
00:04:18
Speaker
Aren't you glad God's mercies are new every morning? need it. I need it every day. every day. i love it. Because we are backsliders. Well, we got hope.
00:04:29
Speaker
But we have hope. Yes. Jesus is our hope every day. So we are going to be reading the book of Malachi, and we are going to start in with our first chapter is entitled A Gift of Sick Animals.
00:04:46
Speaker
Ooh, sick animals.
00:04:51
Speaker
Sometime later, a prophet named Malachi talked to God's people. Here is what God told Malachi to say. I loved you, says God.
00:05:05
Speaker
You asked me how I loved you. This is how. Esau was Jacob's brother. says God, but I loved Jacob.
00:05:17
Speaker
Yes, he did. He chose Jacob. I chose him. yeah I turned Esau's land into a desert called Edom. right The people of Edom might say, we were torn down, but we will build this pile of sticks and stones back up.
00:05:36
Speaker
Here is what God says. They might build again, but I will tear it down again. They will be called the sinful land.
00:05:47
Speaker
The people make me angry. You will see it for yourself. You will say. they are called Edomites. Edomites, yes, that's right. You will say, God is great.
00:06:01
Speaker
He is great even in lands outside of Israel. A son looks up to his father. a servant looks up to his master.
00:06:13
Speaker
I am a father. Where is

Faithfulness in Worship and Community

00:06:16
Speaker
the praise my people should give me?
00:06:20
Speaker
i am a master. Where are the good things my servants should say about me? Asks God. It's you priests who treat me like nothing.
00:06:33
Speaker
Does that sound familiar? Like before the exile? They missed Genesis 1-1, you know? They did. In the beginning. In the beginning. Yep. You ask how you have treated me like nothing.
00:06:45
Speaker
This is how. You offer me animals you don't want. You bring me the sheep that can't see. You bring me sick animals and animals that can't walk.
00:06:58
Speaker
Just try to give those animals to your rulers. Would they be happy with a gift like that? No. Ask God. I know I wouldn't want somebody giving me. I mean, they say don't like don't look a gift horse in the mouth, but I don't think that that's really applicable here. Bring your best animals, not your worst animals. That's right. Bring our best. We're going to talk about that. That's exactly right.
00:07:21
Speaker
Now ask me to be kind and loving to you. Will I let you come to me? i am not happy with you. So I won't let you give me your gifts, says God.
00:07:35
Speaker
My name will be great in all the nations, east and west. Good, clean gifts and sweet smells will be given to me. My name will be great in all the nations, says God.
00:07:51
Speaker
But you make my name sound bad. You talk about the table in my worship house. You say, it's dirty. You talk about the food there.
00:08:05
Speaker
It's bad, you say. Then you say that doing my work is too hard for you. You treat it as if it's not important, says God.
00:08:19
Speaker
Chapter 2, Promises
00:08:23
Speaker
One God made us. But we break the promise we made together with him. We do it by breaking promises to each other. Why do we do this?
00:08:37
Speaker
You cry at the altar. You cry because God is not happy with your gifts. You ask, why? It's because God has seen you break your promises.
00:08:50
Speaker
You did not stay with your wife, but you made promise to her when you married her. God made a husband and wife to be like one person.
00:09:03
Speaker
right Your body and spirit are God's. Why did he make you to be like one person? It's because God wants children who care about what he says. Right.
00:09:17
Speaker
So guard yourself. Don't break your promise to your wife. I hate it when you leave the one you married, says God. I hate it when you are mean and hurtful.
00:09:32
Speaker
So guard yourself. Don't break your promises. God is speaking about right now, right here in this century, we're talking about but so many divorces and so many promises.
00:09:43
Speaker
It's shameful. It is. God's word is still just as true today as it was the day it was written. Absolutely. that could but This might as well have been written yesterday.
00:09:54
Speaker
today Today. Today. Chapter 3 and ah apparently chapter 5 and 4. A land that brings joy.
00:10:07
Speaker
i will send someone with a message, says God. He will get the way ready for me. Who's he talking about? He's talking about his word.
00:10:19
Speaker
John the Baptist. John the Baptist is coming. That's right. Malachi is prophesying about John the Baptist coming. He will get the way ready for me. Then suddenly the Lord you look for will come. He will come to his worship house.
00:10:37
Speaker
He will bring a message about the promise between you and me. He is the one you want. I will come close to you to judge you.
00:10:49
Speaker
I will speak against witches. I will speak against people who don't stay with their husbands or wives. I will speak against liars and people who don't pay their workers.
00:11:01
Speaker
I am against people who are hard on women whose husbands have died. They are hard on children who have no fathers or mothers. They are not fair to people from other lands.
00:11:14
Speaker
They don't care about me, says God. I am the Lord. I do not change. So I have kept you around. You have turned away from me over and over again.
00:11:31
Speaker
You haven't kept my laws. But come back to me. Then I will come back to you, says God. John the Baptist says, repent, for the kingdom of God is here.
00:11:44
Speaker
You must repent your sins and find Jehovah, for I'm God. Amen. John the Baptist brought that message, preparing the way. and He baptized people in the Jordan River. but He sure did.
00:11:55
Speaker
yeah You ask how you can come back to me. i tell you that you rob me, says God. You ask, how do you how do we rob you?
00:12:09
Speaker
This is how. You rob me by not giving to me. Trouble is coming to all of you in this nation. It's all because you are robbing me.
00:12:21
Speaker
Bring your gifts to me. Bring your offerings, says God. See for yourselves. I will open the gates of heaven. I will let good things flow out.
00:12:33
Speaker
You won't have room for all of it. I will keep bugs from eating up your plants. Your vines will always have good fruit.
00:12:44
Speaker
You said bad things about me, says God. You asked what you said. You said that it does no good to serve me.
00:12:55
Speaker
You said that proud people get good things. You said that people who turn against me get away with it. then people Then people who looked up to God talked to each other.
00:13:09
Speaker
and God heard them. Their names were written on a roll of paper. right And these were the names that God would remember. and What's the name of that book that he's writing them in?
00:13:22
Speaker
That's it. The Life Book. That's right. The Book of Life. look of life This is referring to God's Book of Life. They will be mine when I gather my riches, says God.
00:13:35
Speaker
I will save them like a man saves his son. You will see. i don't treat good people and bad people the same. a day is coming.
00:13:48
Speaker
It will burn like a hot oven. People who do wrong will be like grass, dry grass. And that day will set them on fire, says God.
00:13:59
Speaker
Nothing will be left for them. But it won't be that way for you who obey me. What's good and right will heal you. You'll go out dancing like a calf let out of its pen.
00:14:14
Speaker
You will run over sinful people and they will be like dust under your feet, says God. See, i will send a prophet like Elijah to you.
00:14:25
Speaker
He will come before the Lord's great day comes. He will make father's hearts turn to their children. He will make children's hearts turn to their fathers.
00:14:40
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today. super I want to include one last line that our version doesn't include. ah i like the very last part where God says what he just said about, I'm going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of that great and terrible day.
00:15:00
Speaker
He will turn the hearts of fathers to the children and the hearts of children to the fathers, or else I will come and strike the land with utter destruction.
00:15:13
Speaker
Sometimes I like to make sure we know that God says that there will be consequences for not obeying. there This will happen. there's There's responsibility in doing what God says is our work to do.
00:15:28
Speaker
and we've been talking lately about the um the importance of doing the work that God sets for us to do. He has good work set for us to do. prepares it. And there's no excuses.
00:15:40
Speaker
No. it' It's out there. You have to follow them. And God says, how many times does God say, don't be afraid. i am with you. So we should all be doing like Esther and Mordecai who did the work that was called for them that we just finished reading about.
00:15:58
Speaker
But let's go back and talk about our overarching theme here. And it's that the people were not making God the most important one in their lives. That's number one.
00:16:10
Speaker
That is number one. We are to have no other God and we are to worship him with all of our hearts and all of our souls and all of our minds. Number two. And we are to make sure that he is always the most important one every day. Every day.
00:16:26
Speaker
please And what we see here that the people are not making him the most important thing. They're bringing him whatever. you remember Cain and Abel? Yeah. Cain and Abel the same way.
00:16:38
Speaker
Cain didn't bring the right treasure to God. No, he didn't. Cain did not bring a good offering and God was not pleased. And that's because Cain just brought some of what he had.
00:16:51
Speaker
Right. I feel like we're ah we're we're starting and ending the old covenant on the same principle. It's all basic. It's all basic. What God has told then is the same place to that.
00:17:04
Speaker
It is. It's everything is the same. What we've already learned about in the beginning with Cain and Abel, the same principles, the same sins are still pervasive.
00:17:15
Speaker
You bring your best, your fourth to God. Whatever it is, you bring it to God. It has to be the best. That's right. We need to be bringing our best to God. Whatever we do, do it for the glory

Principles of Giving and God's Provision

00:17:27
Speaker
of God. a Amen. Amen.
00:17:30
Speaker
And it might just sound easy, but we want to make sure. I know I've talked about it a couple of times that even when I'm doing the dishes, ah which I do not enjoy doing, I'd be washing those dishes and I would say, I'm doing this for you, God.
00:17:42
Speaker
I'm going to do a good job.
00:17:45
Speaker
We'll do it again. Make sure it's clean. Don't leave any crusty stuff on the dishes. Do a good job.
00:17:54
Speaker
It doesn't matter what we do. Most are small ones, but doing everything we do for the glory of God. And we see that the people were bringing lame animals, sick animals, animals that were blind.
00:18:10
Speaker
They were just bringing junk. They were bringing stuff that they didn't want, God said. Why would we want to bring gifts to God that we don't want? it's It's like when people are having a donation drive.
00:18:25
Speaker
And um and i don't say this to to brag or to build myself up, but whenever we have like ah like a food drive or ah like a Christmas gift drive, sometimes I feel like people are just giving whatever they have left.
00:18:43
Speaker
They go through the cupboard like for a canned food drive and they go, okay, what is it that I'm not gonna use that I don't like? canned squash or canned spinach or something that's been in your cupboard forever and you're cleaning it out and you're just sort of getting rid of the trash by saying, here, we'll just donate this.
00:19:05
Speaker
That's exactly an excellent example. What you give and what you give is not the best. You give them what you want to get rid of. God doesn't want that. No, God wants us to give our best.
00:19:16
Speaker
So I want to encourage us that whenever there is a food drive or a Christmas gift drive or something, don't just go to the store and buy the cheapest crap we can find.
00:19:28
Speaker
Let's give our best. These are people who are receiving. yes and you'll be blessed for it And we will be blessed. And God tells us here the the people were not bringing their tithe.
00:19:40
Speaker
Everything we have comes from God, can you name anything that didn't come from God? No. So God is only asking that we give back 10%.
00:19:53
Speaker
ten percent That's what tithe means. A tithe means 10%.
00:20:00
Speaker
And he says that you they were not bringing in the full amount to the storehouses. And then they were complaining that what they did have was bad. Well, who was bringing the bad food?
00:20:12
Speaker
They were. They were. So it's really interesting that they were bringing junk and then they complained that what was in there was bad. Yeah. what I wonder why.
00:20:24
Speaker
i wonder why. i think i think that's what we call a hypocrite. Yeah. Or a phony. A phony. So we want to be sure that we are bringing our best to God and that we are giving our full tithe to God.
00:20:39
Speaker
And, you know, this is one of the few times God says, To test him in this. He says. See for yourselves. I will open the gates of heaven.
00:20:52
Speaker
I will let good things flow out. We can't out give God. When we give that little 10% back. He gives us back more than what we gave him.
00:21:04
Speaker
yeah and he says that you won't have room for all of it. So we have a tendency to think I can't afford it. I don't have enough money to give.
00:21:16
Speaker
Do you remember the story of Jesus and the widow's mite? Yeah, the widow's mite was just a little value, but what it was is all that she had. It was. It was everything she had.
00:21:27
Speaker
When Jesus was in the temple with his disciples, he said, see how the Pharisees and everybody, they're they're giving out of their riches and their wealth.
00:21:39
Speaker
And bragging about And bragging about it. And we talked about that the other day of not letting your left hand know what your right hand is doing. But when this widow, she gave basically a penny or less than a penny.
00:21:54
Speaker
It's all she had. you know But it was every single thing she had. And Jesus said, I tell you the truth. She gave out of sacrifice. Do you think God didn't bless her? We don't know her her story after that.
00:22:08
Speaker
But I bet God blessed her. It's a bless of the heart and what comes in the future. We don't know, but we do know this is what God wanted. He wanted that message out.
00:22:20
Speaker
And she was obedient. maybe And we already know that God would have blessed her because he tells us right here in Malachi, he says, i will let good things flow out. You won't have room for all of it.
00:22:34
Speaker
He was talking about, too, that their plants, that their crops would would be in abundance. He says... You've got to have rain, you've got have sun, you've got to have all these things to make it work. That's right. yeah So he would send rain.
00:22:45
Speaker
Your vines will always have good fruit. He says that people were speaking badly about him. And they were saying things like...
00:22:57
Speaker
People just get away with doing whatever they want. So what good does it do to do the right thing? We talked a little bit about this with mal ah Mordecai. When he saved the king from the plot, he didn't go up and say, hey, don't forget about me. Don't forget to reward me. What do I get for this?
00:23:20
Speaker
He said nothing. And then God rewarded him. And so what Jesus told them in that story, going back to the widow's might, is that those people who were bragging, he said, I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
00:23:36
Speaker
But instead, when you fast or when you give, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Do what you do in secret so that your father in heaven who sees what is hidden will reward you and you will build up treasures in heaven.
00:23:53
Speaker
So, and God says that he will, when he comes, he says he will gather those who are written in his book of life.
00:24:03
Speaker
And he will not treat the bad people the same as he treats the good people. We've talked about that a lot this year, that God protects those whom he loves.
00:24:14
Speaker
He protected Daniel from the lion's den. He protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace. Yep. He protected Mordecai and Esther and all of the Jews from the evil plot that Haman had. but We could go on for an hour and a half talking about all the ways that God has has provided and shown us over and over again.
00:24:37
Speaker
And you can update it to right now. And we can update it. because old personal life right right Our own personal lives. How many times have we seen and heard stories about people that during recessions and during times of when other people are struggling that God is providing abundance?
00:24:57
Speaker
Yeah. God is

Faithfulness and Forgiveness in Relationships

00:24:59
Speaker
blessing. God will bless us in accordance with our obedience to him. Let's not forget about God talking about promises.
00:25:10
Speaker
The people were not being faithful to one another. That's a big issue right now and in the land of divorce. There's so many divorces that are coming that up. It's so horrible.
00:25:21
Speaker
It just gets worse and worse all the time. It's a high percentage. High percentage a shame. It's not paying attention to God. God's not going to bless them for it. No. They're going to be paying a penalty for it.
00:25:33
Speaker
And, you know, the reason why God is using this example of marriage and promises is because we've talked also many times about seeing God is always, always faithful.
00:25:45
Speaker
He treats his wife, Israel, and now the church, very faithfully. God never leaves us or forsakes us. Right. And the other issue is with children, the effect of these things happen on children and everywhere they go.
00:26:00
Speaker
They need to follow God and they're and they're not going to be going following God because they're all mixed up with their parents. We learn by example. So we need to be good examples for our children.
00:26:11
Speaker
And God is our father and he is the best example for us as children. He shows us his faithfulness by never leaving us or forsaking us. And so he wants us to be just as faithful to him and to each other because we are all part of the body of Jesus.
00:26:30
Speaker
We are all God's children. It says God made everybody. One God made us. Chapter two starts off with one God made us, but we break the promise we made together with him.
00:26:47
Speaker
We do this by ba breaking promises to each other. So even if we're not talking about the promise of marriage. just Just general life. In general, if we make a promise, we need to be faithful to it. Be faithful, yeah.
00:27:00
Speaker
Because if we don't, then that translates into a lie. Right. And God tells us in the Ten Commandments not to lie. he tells us not to lie to each other. So it's all interconnected.
00:27:15
Speaker
And it's all about faithfulness and treating each other well. God treats us well. And he wants us to treat each other well also. It's all for the glory of God. It is all for the glory of God. Everything we do, do it for the glory of God.
00:27:30
Speaker
It's not easy getting along. Do you think it's easy for God?
00:27:37
Speaker
But he's perfect. But you got to get back on track. That's right. Analyze it and see what am I doing? What should I do? How come I went this way? But you got to give it to God, bring it back to where you should be.
00:27:49
Speaker
That's right. Because we are called to be ministers of reconciliation. And we are called to forgive one another.

Guidance of the Holy Spirit and Sharing the Podcast

00:27:56
Speaker
When the disciples were talking about forgiveness, I you remember we're going to get to that too.
00:28:02
Speaker
And one of the disciples, they were they were banned they were ah debating with one another. And he says, you know, should we forgive? ah If our brother sins against us, we should forgive a ah ah him seven times.
00:28:17
Speaker
That's a big word, forgiveness. Forgiveness is a big word. And Jesus said, I tell you the truth. You need to forgive your brother 70 times seven. 490. 490. And responded and the and the disciples responded with ah We need more faith, that you know.
00:28:38
Speaker
He says, Lord, give us the faith to do this. And he said, I tell you the truth. If you have a faith as small as a mustard seed, right you can say to this mountain, moon.
