Genesis 32-33: Jacob's Journey

00:00:58
Speaker
We are going to be reading through Genesis 32 and 33 today, and we are going to be seeing Jacob returning home to Canaan. And on his way home, he is going to be meeting his brother Esau. He's a little bit nervous. And you may remember that when Jacob left his home, he was running away from Esau because he had just tricked it his father, Isaac, into giving him Esau's blessings.
00:01:29
Speaker
So Esau said that when their father died, he would kill Jacob. So now Jacob is on his way home and he's going to be meeting Esau for the first time in a very long time. Let's see what happens. Jacob and his family left for Canaan. God's angels met Jacob on the way. Jacob saw the angels and he said, this is God's camp.
00:01:59
Speaker
Jacob sent some servants ahead. They took this message to Jacob's brother Esau. I have been at Lebons. Now I have cows and donkeys. I have sheep and goats and servants. I hope you will be kind to me. The servants took the message to Esau. Then they came back to Jacob. Esau is coming here, they said. He has 400 men with him.
00:02:28
Speaker
And Jacob was scared. He put his family and servants and animals in two groups. Half of the people and animals were in one group, half of them were in another group. Esau might fight one group, he thought, but the other group can get away. Then Jacob prayed, God, you have been kind to me. I am not good enough for your kindness.
00:02:56
Speaker
I came across the Jordan River a long time ago. I only had my walking stick with me. But now I'm going back across with two groups and I pray that you will save me from Esau. You promised to make my family into a big nation. You said there would be more people than the sand.

Jacob and Esau's Reconciliation

00:03:16
Speaker
Then Jacob chose a gift for Esau. He chose 220 goats and 220 sheep.
00:03:24
Speaker
He got 30 camels with their baby camels. He took 40 cows, 10 bulls, and 30 donkeys, and he gave them to his servants. You go first, Jacob told them, and stay in different groups. Esau will meet the first group. And when he asks whose animals these are, tell him that these are Jacob's. Say that they are a gift, and say that Jacob is on his way.
00:03:53
Speaker
Jacob told the other groups to say the same thing, and he hoped that the gifts would keep Esau from being angry. Jacob sent the gifts on. Later that night, he sent his wives and children across the river, but Jacob spent the night by himself. That night, a man came to Jacob. The man had a fight with Jacob. They kept fighting all night long, but the man could not win because Jacob was so strong.
00:04:23
Speaker
So the man touched Jacob's hip. And right away, Jacob's hip was hurt. Let me go now, said the man. Day is coming. Only if you pray for God's best for me, said Jacob. What is your name? Asked the man. Jacob, he said. Now your name will be Israel, said the man. Why? Because you have been fighting with God and with people. And you have won.
00:04:54
Speaker
Who are you? asked Jacob. Why are you asking me? said the man. Then he prayed for God's best for Jacob. The sun was high in the sky when Jacob left and he could not walk well because his hip was hurt. I saw God said Jacob, but I did not die.
00:05:17
Speaker
Jacob went on with his family. Then he saw Esau and his 400 men coming. So Jacob put his family into groups. He sent the two servants and their children out first. And then he sent Leah with her children. And he sent Jacob, he sent Rachel and Joseph last. But Jacob went down ahead of them all and he bowed down to Esau.
00:05:43
Speaker
Esau ran up to Jacob. He hugged and kissed him. Then he saw Jacob's big family. Who are they? He asked. These are my wives and children, said Jacob. They passed by Esau in their groups. They bowed down to Esau. Why did you send all the goats ahead of you? And why did you send sheep and cows? Asked Esau. They are a gift for you, said Jacob. So you will be kind to me.
00:06:12
Speaker
I have enough goats and sheep and cows, said Esau. You may keep them. No, said Jacob. I am so happy to see your kind face. Please keep the animals as my gift to you, for God has been very good to me. So Esau kept them. I'll go along with you on your trip and help you, he said. But Jacob said, the children can't go very fast. They are too little.
00:06:40
Speaker
So you go on and we will come more slowly.

Jacob's Journey to Bethel

00:06:44
Speaker
So Esau went back home and Jacob took his family to a different place in Canaan and he set up his tents and he built an altar to God there too. Genesis 35, one more baby. God told Jacob, go to Bethel, build an altar for me there.
00:07:07
Speaker
So Jacob told his family and his servants, get rid of all your idols, then clean yourselves up. Put on clean clothes. We're going to Bethel and we'll build an altar to God there. They all gave their idols to Jacob. Jacob dug a hole under an oak tree and he put the idols in the hole and he covered them up and left them there. Then they set out for Bethel. At Bethel, Jacob built an altar to God.
00:07:38
Speaker
Bethel was the same place where God had were had come to Jacob in his dream. It was the dream about the angels on the ladder. And it was where God talked to Jacob for the first time. That was when he was running away from Esau. And God came to Jacob again there. And God said to him, Your name will be Israel now.
00:08:03
Speaker
I give this land to you and your children. Kings will come from your people and this will be their land. Jacob set up a stone post there. He called that place Bethel.
00:08:19
Speaker
And he put oil on the post. Then Jacob traveled on. Rachel was going to have a baby. And while they were on the trip, the baby was born.
00:08:32
Speaker
But Rachel had a hard time having the baby. Don't be afraid, said the woman who was helping Rachel. You have a baby boy. But Rachel was dying. And before she died, she named the baby Ben Omi. And Joseph, Jacob called him Benjamin. Then Rachel died. And Jacob made a grave for Rachel. And he set up a post to mark where her grave was.
00:09:02
Speaker
Jacob stayed in the land of Canaan. And sometime later, Jacob went home to see his father Isaac. Then Isaac died, and Esau and Jacob put his body in a grave. And that is the end of our January 13th reading for the day.

Reflections on Faith and Growth

00:09:25
Speaker
While there was so much that happened in that part of the story today, I have recorded this today's video many times. And there is so much that can be said about what what happened between ah Jacob wrestling with God and the gifts that Jacob brought for Esau, making peace with his brother.
00:09:53
Speaker
and but mostly about the wrestling of the man. But I have not been happy and I don't want it to be too long. So I am going to not talk about it at all tonight. Because every time I have tried to do so, it just ends up being way too long for what the video I think should be. And ah then I have not been satisfied with it.
00:10:20
Speaker
But I want to thank you for joining me. And i I guess I will just add that we are meant to see ourselves, remember, in the people that we read about in the Bible, because these are true stories. They show us God's faithfulness, and they show us the developing faith and growth that people in the Bible have.
00:10:43
Speaker
And we saw a lot of faith that Jacob had by throwing away the idols, gathering them all up and not permitting his family to have them so that they could go and set up an altar for God and only worship God and be faithful to God. So Jacob was showing his faithfulness to God as God showed his faithfulness to Jacob. And ah I wanted you to be encouraged to see yourself in Jacob, to find where you are similar as in your life, where you have maybe placed other things aside and where you have grown in your faith with God.
00:11:27
Speaker
And with that, I will end today's video and I will see you all again tomorrow. And again, I want to apologize for the video being posted so very late tonight as I worked on it for all afternoon for many hours and I just was never happy with any of my efforts. So I'm just going to be done with it tonight. So thank you very much. And I will see you all again tomorrow for our next reading. Have a great day.
