Today. We will  we will complete Psalm 119, read Psalm 122, Psalm 124,  and Psalm 138. We will read about how wonderful God's Word is and the  joy it brings. We will be reminded of how meditating on God's rules  brings wisdom as well as a love for things that are right and good and  dislike for things and people who do not follow God's rules. We will be  encouraged to call upon God when we need Him and pray for peace for  Jerusalem. We will discuss how God fights our battles for us and praise  Him for being stronger than any enemy. We will be encouraged that God's  plans for us will always be carried out and completed. We have purpose!

Exploring 'Songs of Joy' in Psalms

00:01:10
Speaker
I'm so glad that you're here and that you're participating in this event. We are reading through the book of Psalms right now, and we're in the section entitled Songs of Joy. We are reading Psalm 119 at the moment, and it's a very long psalm. We started it yesterday, and we read all the way from Psalm 1 through, let's see, 1 through 96.
00:01:32
Speaker
through let's see one through ninety six Looks like we've read most of 1 through 96. Not every line, but most of it.
00:01:43
Speaker
And today we are picking up with 97 to 112. And then we will read all the way through verse 160.
00:01:54
Speaker
Each section has its own title, and this title of this section is entitled Sweet Words. I bet you can figure out what that's about. We have been reading a lot about how wonderful God's Word is And today we're going to continue along with that theme.
00:02:14
Speaker
Psalm 119, set 97 through 112. I love your law so much. I think about it all day. Your rules make me wiser than my enemies.
00:02:27
Speaker
I understand more than my teachers do. I understand more than the leaders do. That's because I think about your rules. I stay away from sin.
00:02:41
Speaker
Your words taste so sweet. They are sweeter than honey in my mouth. Your commands teach me to understand. So I hate everything that is wrong.

Meditation and Wisdom in God's Word

00:02:54
Speaker
Your word is like a lamp that shows my feet where to go. It's like a light for my path. I may put my life in danger, but I won't forget your rules.
00:03:07
Speaker
Your law. Sinful people set traps for me, but I will not leave your ways. Your rules will be my gift forever. They fill my heart with joy.
00:03:23
Speaker
One of the first things it says is, i think about it all day. you remember what the word is for when you spend time all day thinking about God's rules? It's meditate.
00:03:35
Speaker
And we've talked a little bit about meditation on God's rules. And it says to meditate on the law day and night. means to think about it. And in this psalm, it is saying that they think about the rules all day.
00:03:51
Speaker
And that doing so will make us wise. We'll know more than some teachers and more than some leaders. When you focus on God's law, you learn to love what is right and hate what is wrong.
00:04:07
Speaker
And it teaches us to understand things because God doesn't just let us sit there by ourself while we think. When we sit there in meditation over God's rules and over the Bible and over things that we have read, God speaks to us.
00:04:24
Speaker
When we read in the New Testament that God's spoken word is alive and it cuts through and he speaks to us.
00:04:35
Speaker
And it's wonderful. God's word is wonderful. The words that God speaks are wonderful. says they are sweeter than honey in my mouth.
00:04:47
Speaker
I like how they use the comparison that it's like a light that shows us where to go. And we've seen and by reading our stories this year so far that it is like a light.
00:04:58
Speaker
We can see where to go and where not to go when we read the stories that we read about in the Bible. They help us to learn how to trust God more and how to have faith in him and how to obey him so that things will go well.
00:05:17
Speaker
And God is always working good into everything, even when it seems things are not going so well.

Joy and Fulfillment through Scripture

00:05:24
Speaker
And I love how it says that your rules will be my gift forever. They fill my heart with joy. Reading the Bible does give us a lot of joy, doesn't it?
00:05:38
Speaker
The next section of this psalm is verses 113 to 128. And it's entitled, My Guard.
00:05:49
Speaker
I hate people who say one thing and then say a different thing. They can't make up their minds. But I love your law. You are, I can go to you to be safe.
00:06:01
Speaker
You are my guard. The words you say give me hope.
00:06:07
Speaker
Get away from me, you sinful people. I want to obey God. Hold me, God, and then I'll be safe. I shake when I think about it.
00:06:21
Speaker
Oops, I'm sorry, i skipped a line. I will always follow your rules. You are so great. I shake when I think about it, and I wonder at your laws.
00:06:33
Speaker
I have done what is right and fair. Don't leave me alone with my enemies. Make sure I'm all right. Don't let proud people boss me around. Show me your love.
00:06:45
Speaker
Teach me your rules. It's time for you to do something, God. People are not obeying your law. I love your law more than gold.
00:06:56
Speaker
I know that all your commands are right.
00:07:03
Speaker
It is frustrating when people say one thing and then say a different thing and they can't make up their minds. But we know God never changes. He is always the same and he is love.
00:07:16
Speaker
So he doesn't change from one day being loved to the next day, just being angry to the next day to being hate to back to love. He always loves us. Even when we are naughty, he still loves us.
00:07:29
Speaker
He made us so that we could have a relationship with him. And that's so wonderful. He never turns us away. He's always here for us. It's us who turn away from him.
00:07:42
Speaker
But he's always there when we're ready to turn back.
00:07:47
Speaker
We can go to him to be safe.
00:07:53
Speaker
says, I want to obey God. That's our prayer a lot of times, isn't it? That we want to obey. and I pray that we're all able to obey. It says sometimes that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
00:08:07
Speaker
So we're not perfect. God knows that. Thankfully, we have Jesus who paid the price for our sin. And he teaches us also how to how to do what is right by his examples.
00:08:26
Speaker
Let's see.
00:08:30
Speaker
I like how it calls out to God and says, people are not obeying your law. It's time for you to do something. We can be impatient waiting for God to come, but God's timing is always perfect.
00:08:45
Speaker
And I'm so glad that his timing is perfect because we don't want to hurry things up. He will come in his good time.

Seeking God for Guidance and Comfort

00:08:54
Speaker
The next section of the Psalm is entitled Before Sunrise and it's Psalm 119 verses 145 through 160.
00:09:03
Speaker
I call you with all my heart, answer me God, then I'll obey you. Save me, then I'll keep your laws. I get up before sunrise and I cry for help.
00:09:17
Speaker
My eyes stay open all night so I can think about your promises. Hear my voice because of your love. Many enemies are coming against me, but I don't turn away from you.
00:09:31
Speaker
I don't like people who don't obey you. See how I love your ways. Save my life, God, by your love.
00:09:41
Speaker
Remember, this is all one long psalm. So there's a lot of different topics covered in here. but i i like how this one starts out with, I call you with all my heart.
00:09:54
Speaker
Answer me, God. When we call upon God and when we seek him, we are to seek him with all of our hearts, all of our minds, and all of our soul. And God says that when you seek me with all of your heart, you will find me.
00:10:11
Speaker
God is always here for us.
00:10:16
Speaker
And there are times that we get up early because we can't sleep or we're up in the middle of the night because we can't sleep.
00:10:25
Speaker
And we stay open all night long so we can think of his promises. And they're very comforting.

Prayers for Peace and Acknowledging God's Protection

00:10:36
Speaker
The next section is entitled, Where God's People Go. And it's Psalm 122. So this is a different Psalm now. And this one is written by David.
00:10:48
Speaker
I was glad with the people who said, let's go to God's house. Our feet stand at your gate, Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a city with buildings close together.
00:11:00
Speaker
That's where God's people go. They go there to praise God in its name. And that's where the judges sit. Pray for Jerusalem to have peace.
00:11:12
Speaker
I pray that people who love you will be saved. I pray that there will be peace in your city. I pray that there will be safety around your towers. Then my family and friends will be all saved.
00:11:28
Speaker
I will pray for good things to come to Jerusalem.
00:11:33
Speaker
Even today, Jerusalem has a lot of violence going on, so we can pray for Jerusalem's peace, peace in Israel. I pray that people who love you will be safe, Lord.
00:11:46
Speaker
I pray that there will be peace in your city. I pray that there will be safety around your towers. Then families and friends will be safe. And I pray for good things to come to Jerusalem.
00:12:04
Speaker
Psalm 124 is also by David, and it's entitled, Out of the Hunter's Trap.
00:12:12
Speaker
Men came to fight us. They were angry with us. God was on our side or they would have eaten us alive. Our troubles would have covered us like deep water.
00:12:23
Speaker
They would have taken us away. Praise God. He did not let them get us. We got away like a bird gets out of the hunter's trap. The trap broke and we got away.
00:12:36
Speaker
Our help is in God's name. He is the maker of heaven and earth.
00:12:44
Speaker
This is definitely a song of joy. This takes place after a battle. And David is giving thanks to God because there were often times that the armies of Israel were outnumbered and God fought the fight for them and they won.
00:13:03
Speaker
And we've seen that a number of times, a lot of times. says God was on our side or they would have eaten us alive.
00:13:13
Speaker
meaning that there was quite a lot of people and they had, it looked to them like they would have no chance, but God was with them and that's how they won the battle. And so David is giving praise to God, knowing that it wasn't their great fighting skills that won the battle.
00:13:29
Speaker
It was God. And in the same way, God is with us for our battles too. And things might look difficult and it might look like we can't win, but God is on our side.
00:13:41
Speaker
And if God is for us, who can be against us?

Praising God's Love and Faithfulness in Psalm 138

00:13:49
Speaker
Psalm 138 by David. This is our last Psalm today. It's entitled, You Made Me Bold. I will praise you, God, with all my heart. I will sing your praise.
00:14:02
Speaker
I will bow down toward your worship house. I praise you for your love. I praise you for keeping your promises. You made your name and your words to be the greatest.
00:14:15
Speaker
You answered me when I called. You made me bold, gave me a brave heart. I may have trouble, but you saved my life, God.
00:14:27
Speaker
You hold out your hand to stop my angry enemies. God will do what he planned for me. God, your love lasts forever.
00:14:40
Speaker
That is a great song.
00:14:45
Speaker
God's promises are always kept. God is always truthful. And I love how David says, you made your name and your word to be the greatest.
00:15:00
Speaker
And he's praising God for answering him when he called. Let's remember to thank God that were all the times that he is there for us when we call. He's always just a call away. He's always right there with us.
00:15:15
Speaker
I may have trouble, Lord, but you saved my life and you hold out your hand to stop our enemies. And God will always do what he has planned for you. There is no enemy, no weapon formed that can come against us.
00:15:31
Speaker
They can come against God. Because what God has designed to be done, it will be done. And we can take comfort in that.
00:15:40
Speaker
And God's love lasts forever. Amen.
00:15:48
Speaker
And that's the end of our psalms today.

00:16:13
Speaker
And I am thankful for his presence with us every single day.
00:16:18
