7 Plays1 month ago

Today we will be reading two Psalms: Psalm 113 and a large portion, but  not all of, Psalm 119. We will read verses 1-16, 33-48,65-72, and 81-96.  We will be praising God because He is "great over all nations!" We will  discuss God's rules- how great they are and how obeying them actually  brings us freedom! We will pray to God to help us not be selfish, but to  turn our eyes away from things that waste our time. We will acknowledge  that God's rules are more special than thousands of dollars! And we  will be encouraged to hang onto God's rules when times are tough,  knowing that God is working good into absolutely everything we  experience.

Discussion on Joy in Psalms: Psalm 113

00:02:24
Speaker
We are reading the Psalms and we are in the section entitled Songs of Joy.
00:02:29
Speaker
So these are so happy. am loving these Psalms. So today we have two Psalms to read. Actually, it's, a yes, two Psalms, but one Psalm is very long. And so it is broken down into sections and we will even continue you with that same Psalm tomorrow.
00:02:49
Speaker
That's how long it is. So our first Psalm is Psalm 113 and it's entitled, Sunrise to Sunset.
00:03:00
Speaker
Praise God! You servants of God, cheer for His name. Praise His name now and forever. His name should be praised from sunrise to sunset.
00:03:13
Speaker
God is great over all nations. His power is great above the sky. Who is like God? he sits on the throne and he sits on the king's chair in heaven.
00:03:27
Speaker
He bends down to look at the sky and the earth. God helps poor people. He takes them to sit with princes. He gives children to the woman who thought she would never have any.
00:03:41
Speaker
He makes her happy in her home. Praise God.
00:03:47
Speaker
We do not have an author for that. I just wanted to make sure that I notated that.
00:03:54
Speaker
Ah, so these are songs of joy and they are all about praising God for how wonderful he is, for all the many things he does. So part of that is giving thanks. It's being thankful for the things that God does and just for who he is.
00:04:09
Speaker
We are so privileged to have a God who is wonderful, who is love What if he were like the man-made gods that are not real? When we look at false gods like Zeus and and the other gods, and they they have human temperaments where they just get angry and you have to worry about appeasing them.
00:04:31
Speaker
we had yeah We used to have sacrifices for God, but they were not to keep him from being angry and to appease his anger so that we we could buy his love and attention.
00:04:43
Speaker
No, they are offerings to ah be pleasing to him so that they are just thankfulness and and worship of him. But they are they are not in exchange for his love.
00:04:59
Speaker
They are out of gratitude and worship.
00:05:04
Speaker
His name should be praised now and forever. I am so glad that we have time in our day every day and we have we can praise Him with everything.
00:05:16
Speaker
Everything we do, just be thankful for everything that He does. Every good thing comes from God and He is a part of our day all day long. He has work set out for us to do and every day He's right here with us.

Exploration of Psalm 119: Obedience and Joy

00:05:30
Speaker
We are never alone.
00:05:35
Speaker
Let's see. Let's go on to Psalm 119. And the first section of this is 1 through 16, verses 1 through 16.
00:05:47
Speaker
And this section is called Hiding in My Heart.
00:05:52
Speaker
Good things come to people who do what's right. They keep God's rules. They obey Him. They look for God with all their hearts. They don't do wrong.
00:06:04
Speaker
You have told us your rules, God. I wish I would always do what you want me to do. Then I would never feel bad.
00:06:16
Speaker
i will praise you with a heart that's right. How can a young person keep doing what's right? By following your word, God. I look for you with all my heart.
00:06:30
Speaker
Don't let me turn away from your law. I have hidden your word in my heart, so I won't sin against you. I'm glad to follow your rules and I will not forget your word.
00:06:46
Speaker
This section is about obeying God's rules and loving those rules.
00:06:53
Speaker
and it And the same is true today as it was back when the Psalm was written. I also pray, and I hope pray for all of us, that we would always do what God wants us to do, and then we won't feel bad.
00:07:08
Speaker
And we're not perfect. God knows that. But we can sure try and do our best to please Him and to not grieve the Holy Spirit. And praise Him with a heart that's right.
00:07:21
Speaker
I love the advice here. How can a young person keep doing what's right? By following your word, God. That's what we call a rhetorical question.
00:07:33
Speaker
It's an answer we already know.
00:07:37
Speaker
Don't let me turn away from your law. I have hidden your word in my heart so I won't sin against you. ah This part is about following God's rules and and loving his law and thinking about it all the time.
00:07:51
Speaker
It doesn't seem like following rules would be freedom. It seems like they're they're difficult to do. But it's the enemy that makes things hard for us to do. And it's that knowing good and evil and having the choice to do the right and the wrong thing that makes it hard.
00:08:09
Speaker
But God's rules really are freedom. We are not burdened with with sin when we do what is right. We're not burdened with all of the negative consequences that come when we do the wrong thing.
00:08:23
Speaker
And God sets us up for success. He gives us these rules and he tells us what to do and he shows us how to do it because it will help us to be happier and to help us to be freer. And you wouldn't think that following rules would make you freer, but it really does.
00:08:39
Speaker
That's a sort of a paradox with God's rules. By doing the right thing, we are free.
00:08:50
Speaker
The next section of Psalm 119 is verses 33 through 48, and it's entitled, With All My Heart. I bet you can guess what that's about.
00:09:03
Speaker
Teach me to follow you, God. Help me understand. Then i will obey you to the end. I will obey with all my heart. Lead me in your ways because that's what makes me happy.
00:09:17
Speaker
Don't let me be selfish. Turn my eyes away from things that waste my time. Send me your love that never ends, God. Save me like you promised.
00:09:28
Speaker
Then I will answer the people who make fun of me. I'll have an answer because I trust what you say. i will obey you forever and ever. i will be free because I look for what you want me to do.
00:09:44
Speaker
I will tell kings about your rules. I will not feel bad because I am happy with your rules. I love them and think about them.
00:09:55
Speaker
That's pretty much what we just got through saying, isn't it? That by obeying God's rules, it actually makes us free. It's amazing. We are free to be who we are and god who God created us to be when we just do what he tells us to do.

Meditation and Avoiding Distractions

00:10:14
Speaker
And I love the part that says, don't let me be selfish. Turn my eyes away from things that waste my time. How many things do we have that waste our time nowadays?
00:10:25
Speaker
Even then they had things that wasted their time. But now we just seem to have an abundance of things more and more that waste our time. Because if we're wasting our time, it's time not spent thinking about God and his rules.
00:10:40
Speaker
And I think it's a tactic of the enemy. It's anything to keep us focused on something that isn't him. God says, meditate on my law day and night. And remember we talked about that doesn't mean going, oh, and trying to clear your mind.
00:10:56
Speaker
That is not what meditation is. Meditation is thinking and focusing about God's word. It is the opposite of clearing your mind. It is focusing your mind on God and on what he teaches us.
00:11:11
Speaker
And that is the enemy's tactic, as in the world, is to teach to clear the mind, because it is the opposite of filling your mind with God. So that's our daily application today.
00:11:24
Speaker
The biggest one is to turn our eyes away from things that waste our time. And that's being selfish. We're thinking about, oh, I want to spend my time doing this. Oh, I want to spend my time doing that.
00:11:38
Speaker
And that's what it says here is don't let me be selfish. Turn my eyes away from things that waste my time. So Lord, I pray for us, all of us participating in this event, please help us to not be selfish with our time and to to help us turn our eyes away from things that waste our time today and every day so that we can stay focused on your law, Lord, on your rules that teach us how to be right so that we can be truly free in you.
00:12:08
Speaker
And in Jesus' name, I ask this for everybody here. Amen.
00:12:15
Speaker
The next section of Psalm 119 is verses 65 through 72, and it's entitled, More Special Than Gold. Do good to me just like you said, God.
00:12:29
Speaker
Teach me what I need to know. Teach me to choose wisely. i believe in your rules. In the past I did what was wrong, but now I obey you.
00:12:42
Speaker
You are good, and what you do is good. Proud people lie about me. Their hearts are hard. They have no feelings.
00:12:54
Speaker
But I keep your laws with all my heart. It was good for me to have trouble because I learned your rules. Your law is more special to me than thousands of pieces of silver.
00:13:08
Speaker
It's more special to me than thousands of pieces of gold. Today we could say, your law is more special to me than thousands of dollars.
00:13:21
Speaker
Would you trade God's rules for thousands of dollars?
00:13:26
Speaker
That's a hard question. Thousands of dollars is a lot of dollars. If you had the choice to receive thousands of dollars for disobeying God's rules, would we take it? That would be the enemy tempting us there.
00:13:40
Speaker
That's like what he did when he was with Jesus in the desert, when Jesus had been there for 40 days. And he tempted Jesus with many things. And God, Jesus said, man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
00:13:58
Speaker
And it is better to live on every word that comes from God's mouth than for money.
00:14:07
Speaker
Teach us to choose wisely, God. Teach us what we need to know.
00:14:14
Speaker
It can be hard when people lie about us and they have no feelings and their hearts are hard. This is something that was happening then thousands of years ago, and it's just the same now.
00:14:26
Speaker
Nothing has changed. We're all still people. And this is part of our application today, too. Don't worry about those people who lie about you. I know I've had people lie about me just in the past month.
00:14:39
Speaker
I've had the same person make lies about me, making sure to tell them to people that I was friends with so that those lies would get back to me at work and so that I would be hurt by them.
00:14:56
Speaker
They have no feelings, but I keep your laws with all my heart. And you tell me to pray for those people. And so I pray and I forgive. I forgave that person.
00:15:11
Speaker
It was good for me to have trouble because I learned your rules. That's a big application for us today. We've talked so many times about God is with us through everything. And sometimes we have to go through things just to learn lessons that he needs for us to learn.
00:15:27
Speaker
We cannot learn forgiveness if people don't wrong us. We can't learn to be generous unless we have a lot to give.
00:15:37
Speaker
And we always have enough to give.
00:15:42
Speaker
The next part of Psalm 119 is verses 81 through 96, and it is entitled, Foggy Eyes.
00:15:54
Speaker
My soul gets weak because I want so much for you to save me. My eyes are foggy because I have looked so long for your promise.
00:16:06
Speaker
I say, when will you cheer me up? I feel like I'm in a cloud of smoke. But I don't forget your rules. How long do I have to wait?
00:16:18
Speaker
When will you pay people back for doing wrong? Proud people try to make me fall. Help me. People are mean to me for no reason.
00:16:29
Speaker
They almost got rid of me. But I didn't turn away from your rules. Save my life by your love. Then I will obey you.

Conclusion and Encouragement

00:16:40
Speaker
Your word and your promises last forever, God.
00:16:44
Speaker
I'm happy with your law. If I had not been, would have died in my trouble. i will never forget your commands because you saved my life.
00:16:56
Speaker
Sinful people wait to get rid of me, but I will think about your rules. Even the best things go only so far, but your rules last for forever.
00:17:10
Speaker
I love that. How many times have we felt discouraged and just drugged down by the trial that we are going through? How long do we feel like we have to wait? How long until this thing is over?
00:17:25
Speaker
And this gives us encouragement to hold on to God's rules. Hold fast. He is still here with us. How long do we have to wait? We don't know. but we have faith and trust that our God is good and that he is working good into everything that we are having happen.
00:17:44
Speaker
Everything we are going through, God is working good through. And if we just keep our eyes on him and remember his rules and remember to respond in the way that he teaches us to respond, we will come through it.
00:18:01
Speaker
Well, that's the end of our reading today. I hope you feel that you were encouraged by today's Psalms with love and and remembering God's word and just praising him and encouragement for when we are going through something that's been lasting forever.
00:18:21
Speaker
I hope that God has lit your light today. I know he has, but if you can feel that light has been lit within you, then I ask that you click that light button and let's light up this event so that other people can be attracted to it and help spread the word about reading God's word.
00:18:38
Speaker
hope everybody has a great rest of their Wednesday and I will be here for everybody again tomorrow.
