Welcome back to LHOHP! That's right, a guest TWO weeks in a row. This week we're checking out the mockumentary slasher style horror movie, Behind the Mask. This is just a lot of fun, and definitely a must see for horror fans. Also, I drink the first beer I HIGHLY recommend you avoid. See you next week for the one year anniversary! Cheers!

Introduction and Host's Personal Note

Did you ever see an animal skin in your mouth? That's what I'm going to do to you now. Fare the skin from your body. Slowery. Pick my wrist. When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk here. No, Mom! He was weak. He was weak. You know what the most frightening thing in the world is?

Discussion on 'Behind the Mask': A Horror Fan's Movie

00:00:41
Speaker
Jack. Welcome back to Little Hops a Horse podcast. I'm John, your host as always. Not sure if we're going to have the same energy today that we have in past episodes. My kid is kicking the living shit out of me this week with his teething. So I've been awake since 2.30 this morning. It is now 8 o'clock in the evening. But regardless, we're going to power through. We're going to have some fun. We're doing Behind the Mask, The Rise of Leslie Vernon from 2006. It's 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.7 out of 10.
00:01:10
Speaker
On IMDB now without further ado. We have one of our favorite guests here joining us again Nick Adams from fuel by hops Nick What's going on buddy? What's going on man? Thanks for having me back. No problem. So you actually selected this movie Gave you a list again, and this is the one that jumped out to you I'm giving it about a seven and a half out of ten Obviously, we're gonna cover why here in a little bit but any any reason why this one jumped out to you yeah, I mean, I think we're gonna cover it in the review here, but it's a
00:01:41
Speaker
To me, this is a horror movie fans movie. It was made for listeners of this podcast, people that really get the genre and like to poke fun at the different cliches of it. This movie is for you.
00:01:55
Speaker
Yeah, no, I definitely, um, I, I, the movies that I pulled from is like kind of like inspiration. I, maybe not inspiration, but just like, like you said, it's a horror fans horror movie, right? Like you're not just going to watch this as like a casual Karen in the fucking October. Like I need recommendations. Uh, it's going to be like,
00:02:16
Speaker
I like One Cut of the Dead because that is a fantastic horror movie, even though it's like loosely a horror movie. But it shows like all the crazy shit that happens behind the scenes of a low budget horror film, you know, like in real time, which is very, very fun to watch. And they kind of do

Beer Tasting and Personal Experiences

00:02:33
Speaker
that here. They show you like the behind the scenes of a slasher film, but like through the eyes of a slasher himself, which was pretty cool. But it's kind of playful, too. So, you know, I kind of pulled like a trick or treat.
00:02:45
Speaker
which we covered last year. Um, so there's just like two movies that kind of reminded me a little bit, uh, of this, but, um, yeah. Uh, so I know you got something cool that you're sipping on over there. What do you got? Yeah, I am drinking Florida Stanley by magic city. I actually just was out at magic city earlier this week. Um, brewing a beer with those guys for something coming up later on that we'll talk about a little bit, but Florida Stanley, I believe is there like flagship.
00:03:13
Speaker
Citra New England IPA six and a half percent ABV real solid beer. I mean you can't get a better Flagship IPA to something like this. I mean smooth Citra kind of hop bite right in the front I think they just kind of tweaked it up a little bit and this one's It's going on really smooth
00:03:33
Speaker
Tons of flavor. It's everything you want, just like a go to IPA. Nice. Yeah. I mean, so kind of like, uh, like we're used to Braddock's and, uh, you know, bane of existence, lustrous. So it's like of that ilk, right?
00:03:46
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, it's right along those terms. I mean, I would say it's everything if not more than most of those beers you just mentioned. Hell yeah. I'm going to have to get my hands on some here. I am not doing beer that is that good. I can guarantee it. I am drinking the champagne of beers. If you don't know what that is, that is your problem. No, it's Miller High Life. 4.6% sitting at 273 on Untapped. Go figure. People shit all over it.
00:04:11
Speaker
Now, this beer is an OG in the craft beer scene. I have not seen this in years, either that or I have just passed over it on purpose. We have an arrogant bastard ale from stone. This was one of the beers that we first saw when we first got into craft beer. Feels like forever ago now, right? Like 15, 16 years ago. It's 7.2%. And 369 on untapped, which I feel like is probably too high.
00:04:40
Speaker
Maybe it's not as awful as I remember, but even if you read the untapped description, it's like, you should probably choose another beer. This is aggressive and it's probably not for you. I can't remember ever liking that beer. I mean, I remember respecting it for what it was, but I can't ever remember going like, Oh, I need to have another one of those.
00:04:57
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's just, I think it's just a violent beer, right? It's just like malty, which I hate malt flavor in a beer and it's aggressively hobby. This is the old school IPA, like pine, just nasty, right? We drank this shit so you kids can have your fucking fruited sours and nice, you know, pastry stouts and everything. This is what we started with, right? So we, we are the true champions here. Um, then they're done that. Now real quick, since you're talking

Preview of 'Let's Be Blunt' Event

00:05:21
Speaker
about high life, have you ever had a spaghet?
00:05:24
Speaker
No, what is that? So a spaghet, you take the glass bottle, highlight, you pour, you know, you drink about two, three ounces of it. You put a shot of Aperol in it and then a shot or half a shot of lemon juice. Okay. It is the most refreshing summer drink you'll ever have. Okay, now, what the hell is Aperol?
00:05:44
Speaker
It's, I believe, Italian. I think it's called a digestif. It's like an after dinner drink that you would have to help with. Oh, is it that little bitters thing that everybody freaks out over? No, that is Underburg. Okay, that's it. But it's along that same line of a beer or a drink that would help you kind of help digest your meals, help settle your stomach after a meal. It's an after dinner drink in, I believe, Italian culture.
00:06:11
Speaker
and you put a shot of that and you put a little bit of lemon juice in your beer and it's super refreshing.
00:06:18
Speaker
Well, they eat a lot of pasta over there so I could see why that would help with keeping them regular. All right. So you touched earlier on on why you're drinking Magic City. I believe you'll buy hops has some pretty cool stuff coming up this year. You want to you want to enlighten us, fill us in on what's going on. Yeah. So April 20th for 20 coming up here. We are throwing a beer event out at Magic City. It's called Let's Be Blunt. This is a beer festival.
00:06:45
Speaker
the name is what it is. How did that come to be besides like the date? Is this going to be like a theme or? So the name came about with Ryan and I like like the idea was 420 is a Saturday this year. And we wanted to do a beer event like a smaller more intimate kind of event than we've ever done before. And we went to an event at Magic City in January like the layout and decided, you know, hey, why don't we do something for 20s on Saturday? What if we kind of make like a kind of weed beer festival?
00:07:16
Speaker
And then Ryan and I are bouncing names back and forth. And we were trying to come up with an idea that would tell people, this is a beer event, but this is kind of the idea behind it without it kind of leaning too much on like stoner beer event. Like we didn't want that. And then it's just probably an hour and a half of him and I just spinning different names out back and forth. And it just came down to look at it. It's let's be blunt.
00:07:41
Speaker
This is a beer festival. Right. Perfect name came about. We just went from there. That's awesome. I actually had a I think I talked to you about this when when I first found out about the event, I had a THC beer a couple of weeks ago when I reviewed Mandy and that beer fucking wrecked my day. I got the most intense case of the much. I don't do that stuff like ever. And I got the most intense case of the munchies. I had a full dinner and I'm talking like full dinner like Italian dinner probably needed that digestive stuff you were talking about.
00:08:10
Speaker
after, but apparently you just need a THC beer to fucking wreck your night. But man, that's super cool. Any breweries you want to reveal that might be there or anything? Yeah. I mean, I can tell you the list here. We're going to have Magic City, obviously. Ill Will's coming. Species X, newer place out of Columbus, Ohio. They are known for doing all their beer recipes via AI. Oh, shit.
00:08:33
Speaker
Yeah. I haven't had anything from them yet. I've just kind of talked to them via email, but they have multiple different AI bots that they use to generate their beer recipes that they brew. That is fascinating. I've never thought that, wow. I mean, I'm very interested in that. I'm definitely going to look into that now. Like, so do they just, I don't even know how to ask a question because I'm just fascinated. I'm literally going to Google that the second we get off and figure out what the hell they do.
00:08:58
Speaker
So he sent me an email kind of describing the process, but they've built these different A.I. bots. And Bo, if I'm butchering this, please, I'm sorry. But they have different A.I. bots that they built. Like they built like a smoothie sour A.I. bot. They built a like like a fruited sour A.I. bot. And they say, you know, we want this, I believe. And it kind of builds out the recipe for them. And then they throw it. So
00:09:29
Speaker
They're doing interesting stuff. I haven't had any of their stuff yet. I'm really excited to see what these guys are bringing in and check them out. Yeah, absolutely. I wonder if they're just like, hey, make us like do it like the mortalis does. And they're like, OK, we're like, hit us some Fides IPA recipe. Like, OK, we'll just do that. That'd be a cheat code, wouldn't it? Seriously, like, I mean, we might head there. You never know where you can just like, you know, have that on your computer and you can be a home brewer and just like. Yeah. We were talking about like maybe that not the death of craft beer, but like
00:09:57
Speaker
You know, it's it the fun of it's kind of gone a little bit we were talking before but Yeah, I mean I would not be surprised that you know Just you talking about that that maybe someday because they already have all these recipes out
00:10:09
Speaker
You know, like Sierra Nevada has paleo, like go ahead, try to make it as good as we do. You can't, um, they're pretty confident in that. Same with, I think Julius does it, um, tree house, but. Yeah. The big thing with all those beers though, that people forget to understand is the most important ingredient is the one that matters the most. And that's water, water, water, water, water. Yep. Correct. First and most important thing. Yeah. Real quick. I'll just list off the rest of the places here. I'm missing mountain. Um, okay. Coming out of Ohio. Uh, we got our friends at Cinderlands from Pittsburgh coming over.
00:10:37
Speaker
Dancing gnomes gonna be coming as well froth from Buffalo. Oh, yeah our friends from abomination out of Connecticut Fatheads coming over from Ohio pretentious barrel house newer place to me out of Columbus And then last but not least we're gonna have JFB who possibly has one of the best brewery names of all time coming out of Worcester, Ohio
00:10:59
Speaker
Okay. J-A-F-B. Just another fucking brewery. That's great. I need a sticker from them. I need a sticker from them. That's awesome. I'm sure that was funny, like filing for your license or whatever. That's cool. Yeah, so that's going down, well, by the time this episode releases next weekend. So that's exciting for you guys. But you have another one coming up. You guys just never stop. What else is on the schedule?
00:11:26
Speaker
Yeah, so June 29th at Union Brothers Brewery, Zalianopole, PA, just a little bit north of Pittsburgh. We're going to do cookie table three. Going to be an outdoor event this time, shooting for 30 breweries, going to have some different vendors there, food's going to be there, DJ, a whole set up giant cookie table like always. Thanks.
00:11:48
Speaker
The beer list for this one's going to be pretty good. We're hoping to start seeing some more answers from some invites. I don't think we're ready to kind of drop too much information on that one yet. I think we released a couple of names so far. I think we already kind of said that a Christos, Forscore, Mortalis, a couple others are already kind of signed up to come to that one. So that's just a small little taste of what's coming to Pittsburgh here in the end of June.
00:12:15
Speaker
Nice. Yeah. I was at the first two events and after my shot of insulin, like I really did enjoy myself. That was nice. But that's the point, man. I mean, pastry salads are fucking great. Cool. Yeah. I mean, I was

Favorite Horror Movie Slashers

00:12:27
Speaker
at the Halloween haunted beer fest you guys did.
00:12:30
Speaker
and it will in October that was a lot of fun and that bug beer I'll never forget that that was like such a crazy concept that you know somebody put actual bugs in a beer and it was delicious yeah yeah yeah I think my favorite beer that night was hams though so but I happen to know a guy anyway um
00:12:50
Speaker
Before we dive into this movie here, what we like, what we didn't like in spoilers and stuff. Do you have like a favorite slasher or like a favorite horror icon? Probably Michael. Michael? I've always been a huge fan of the Halloween series. I think I loved how his character has evolved over time. I like the originals. I like the Rob Zombie. I like the newer ones, at least the first couple of newer ones. I haven't been a big fan of the way they ended it.
00:13:20
Speaker
But he's had that lasting power. I mean, Freddie's always kind of funny to me as well.
00:13:28
Speaker
I just, some of the later editions of the series kind of ruined it for me on some of these characters. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, but yeah, you just kind of watch it because you're like, I've watched the other seven. I might as well finish. I'm a big, big Freddy fan. Love Freddy because he talks so much shit like as he's killing you and you just don't have that with the other two main icons. They're pretty silent. And, you know, I mean, Jason Voorhees is a fucking juggernaut. He's fun to watch.
00:13:57
Speaker
Um, yeah, Michael, Michael probably come in third for me, but I've only seen, I mean, I always say seem like the Rob Zombie ones, but I haven't seen like, um, Halloween two or the season of the witch or any of those other ones and like the original, um, bit, but, um, yeah, this, so, you know, we talked about those cause we're going to talk about a movie that pretty much.
00:14:18
Speaker
wouldn't exist, I don't

In-depth Review of 'Behind the Mask'

00:14:19
Speaker
think, if these guys didn't exist. So definitely some stuff that stuck out to me in this movie was, it was fun. It's just a fun movie, right? It's like, they're not trying to win an Oscar. They're just trying to have fun. Like you said, this is made for horror fans. Thought it was a pretty original take on a horror film. It's a film within a film. Awesome cameos. You had Kane Hodder early on, Robert Anglin, obviously. And then I didn't recognize her face.
00:14:47
Speaker
but I recognize the voice. Her name is Zelda Rubinstein, and she was in Poltergeist. I've only seen Poltergeist one time, and it was so fucking long ago, and I haven't watched it since then. But she was on the show I used to watch called Scariest Places on Earth, which was on ABC Family, and they would just go to these haunted locations, and she was the narrator.
00:15:10
Speaker
Um, and she has a very unique voice. Like once you hear it, you're like, Oh, that lady. Um, but she was in here. Um, but yeah, I mean, it's, it's got like a low budget slasher charm. Um, I think I like a lot of people that are responsible for us getting into horror. We're involved in this and it just, just kind of made it fun. What about you? What'd you like? Uh, similar things. I mean, I liked how.
00:15:31
Speaker
They made everything almost real in a sense. In this movie, Jason Freddie and Michael Myers are alive and in the same universe, essentially. It's just a crazy concept to wrap your head around at first. The cameos were a nice touch. I really liked how, looking through the notes here on this one, but Robert England looking like Dr. Loomis was a cool touch. Right.
00:16:00
Speaker
But just the the taking the curtain or kind of getting that peek behind the curtain. Yep. But just the way they had fun with it, like you said, I mean, the the main killer, Leslie, was such a normal goofy guy. Mm hmm. You would have never expected that. Like, like if this movie was about Michael Myers, I wouldn't expect him to drive a Prius like Leslie Vernon. So.
00:16:26
Speaker
You know, that's kind of the different takes I had on is that they made this guy seem like such a goofy guy that everyone knows that just happens to put on a mask and kill a bunch of people. Right, right. And he just like, you know, some people want to be fireman and some people want to be, you know, like a pop star. This guy wanted to be the next Freddy Krueger or whatever. Yeah, that was definitely cool how they brought
00:16:51
Speaker
There's a lot of like little and I never can remember if it's like easter egg or red herring I never remember those terms when it comes to like cinematography or movies or anything like that but he he was dr. Lewis like Robert England was the same character basically the same dress I mean the same coat I mean it was it was so pointed to that
00:17:10
Speaker
right dialogue like everything down you know was just uh yeah and there's a lot of those little easter eggs and whatnot throughout throughout this movie which is uh just a lot of fun um so we're diving to spoilers now so you guys haven't seen this we're at 17 minute mark stop come back at 18 minutes or 17 and a half whatever you want to do we'll go from there but um yeah so but first i'm gonna try this nasty fucking beer enjoy i'm gonna see if it's as bad as i remember
00:17:38
Speaker
Oh, it's fucking terrible. It smells, it smells awful. Like it smells like you're going to hate it. This, you know what this is? This is like when they, you know, when you like, um, mop your floor at the end, you know, and then like you dump out that bucket of mop water. That's what this is. That's just, this is cleaning product, uh, that they use to clean the brewery. They dump it in a can and sell it to us for six bucks a can. Cause we're idiots.
00:18:01
Speaker
Now you're gonna have every 45 50 year old neck beard just shitting on you because you're that's fine here again bastard. That's fine I know it's I know this is one of and it is I know we had a drink it to get here But man doesn't mean it's good. There's better beer out there. No, okay But we're gonna power through I'm gonna show you it it's like someone sprayed perfume in my mouth Do you wear cologne? Do you ever like accidentally do that?
00:18:23
Speaker
Yeah, on accident, but not for fun and keep doing it. Well, that's what that's what this is. I just sprayed fucking hairspray in my mouth. Terrible. Oh, my God. Anyway, yeah, so definitely love like the mockumentary style. I always like when there's like a different take on a movie, like a different approach. And like you mentioned, the name drops were fantastic.
00:18:47
Speaker
There are some loose ends in this. I didn't really realize until I got to the end of it, but they have this nerdy protagonist or antagonist. I'm not really sure what he is.
00:19:02
Speaker
he wants to be a bad guy. But he's, you know, and he's still kind of like in this training and everything. And he's got this weird loose backstory where like, the town thinks he's dead. But he's not really from that town. Or is he from this town? Like, you know, they never really explained I don't think they tried to I mean, I think they left it up to interpretation. I mean, he he plays himself as one person. Dr. Loomis tells him he's not. And then
00:19:32
Speaker
There's no closure to it though. It's just like, oh, this is my stance. This is my stance. And then it's like, okay, we're never talking about it again. Which is a lot of, you know, those old slashers or you can just poke holes through them all day long. It doesn't matter. You're here for fun. Shut your brain off and have fun. Yeah. So, you know, I like that, you know, I don't even know how the documentary crew came about if they said why they were trying to do this.
00:19:56
Speaker
Um, but regardless, it's pretty cool that he takes them on the strip. And like you said, I actually had that in my notes, like the peep behind the curtain, like, so, you know, he thinks of all this shit, you know, and they obviously later in the movie that you're just like, well, why don't the batteries ever work in these fucking things? Oh, cause he like took them out. Yeah. Right. He's got like this huge prep list that he like takes care of everything beforehand. You're just like, God damn it. That's so brilliant. Never thought of that. Never thought of that. Um, but, but it made total sense after he said it.
00:20:25
Speaker
Mm hmm. Right. I mean, I mean, everything he talked about, I mean, the part that got me when it was when he was talking about the cardio he has to do. Yes. And he's just like, do you know how hard it is to be fast without looking like you're fast? Right.
00:20:40
Speaker
It just made me think of Michael Myers and Jason and all these guys that just like stalk their prey by walking And that's what he looks like and he turns you turn your back and he just books it to you He's still yep. He still catches up to you know, it was how fast you walk how fast it doesn't matter Nick are you still there? I don't know if we lost you here buddy. I hope not. Oh, no, we're gonna pause it. We're gonna pause it. Oh
00:21:05
Speaker
No I fucking lost it didn't I it's the first time I have lost. Okay so that's fun that's the fun of podcasting yeah Nick fucking glitched on the screen there and I panicked we have better internet but it's still not the greatest. But yeah no I loved I love that all about anytime these motherfuckers are on the screen you know the teenagers sprinting full speed and then they just show.
00:21:30
Speaker
Just nice and casual. Sloan said he wins the race, like tortoise and the hare. Apparently. But I like how he sets up his profile. He lays the groundwork for what he looks for in a set of victims. And they all fit the cliche. There's the stoner types that don't give a shit. There's the slut. There's the cheerleader. There's the virgin. There's all this stuff. And he kind of shows what it's like to be the star in a slasher film.
00:21:59
Speaker
And it I like to especially that he was like he has like want to play like do you want to get in on this with me and he lets them like pull the brick to scare the shit out of the waitress like early on and everything and they get like excited about this.
00:22:14
Speaker
Which I mean, who wouldn't be because you're not really taking it seriously yet. I don't think the film crew thinks that anything is really going to come out of this. Yeah. And so they've meet Jean, right? The fucking dude who's in a coffin. I mean, sound sleep deprivation tank on the backyard. I couldn't figure out who he's supposed to be. And it's been driving me crazy. I want to know who he's portrayed because there has to be with all the name dry up drops on the tie ins to everything. He has to be there has to be a nod to somebody.
00:22:44
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. I'm trying to think if it's like, I mean, was he dead? Like, was he? I don't know. Again, he was just like in this tank. They're like, you've been out here for three days. And he's just like, oh, yeah. We're like, what the fuck? I don't think so because Leslie talks about, you know, I do yoga and this and that to help slow my heart rate down if I need to appear dead. You know, so I think he was just doing that. At least that's how I interpreted it. Yeah.
00:23:11
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know who he is. I don't either. I don't know. I can't recall anybody that
00:23:18
Speaker
Yeah, that he reminds me of. But I do like some of the lines he says. He says they're not in the business of killing. They're in the business of fear. If there's good in the world, there has to be evil. You gotta be that counterbalance and everything, and they talk about that. But they're very vague, but they're also very specific about everything that they talk to.
00:23:41
Speaker
Talk about, Jesus Christ, this arrogant Pastor Dale is fucking me up, man. It's so gross. And I have so much of it that I poured in my cup. Oh my God. But just the back and forth with them and everything and talking about so casually about what it was like to be in the biz for all these years and how these guys took it to the next level and everything. It was just fun.
00:24:04
Speaker
I like the, uh, someone he's preparing dinner while he's talking about that. And he's just using his knife and just chopping like a pro chef, which makes total sense for a slasher to really know how to knife works. Um, and I also liked that he kind of dropped that he married his victim girl. Is that who she was? I know that, um, that Leslie has like an infatuation with her and just loves her. He was talking about how hot she was and everything. Um,
00:24:33
Speaker
But, uh, yeah, I thought it lost you there for a second. There's a minor, you know, I don't know what's going on tonight. It's not even raining. I don't know what's going on. We should have perfectly fine internet, but that's podcasting baby. You guys know that by now on episode 55 or whatever the fuck we're on right now. Um, but.
00:24:52
Speaker
Uh, he's getting ready to start his process, right? This is like game time. He's like, we're going to go to the next level. I'm going to start, you know, we're going to do this. Uh, and he's like, you guys don't want to be here. You can go if you want. And they're like, nah, we're just going to stick it out and see what happens. Now I have my notes here that he plants a seed and he kills his first victim in front of the crew. I have no idea who the fuck that even was. I do not remember.
00:25:19
Speaker
Cause it wasn't that was, um, the lady from poltergeist. Oh, in the library. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Okay. That makes sense that, okay. Yeah. Cause they, they do that weird like newspaper clipping thing to like make her think something's okay. Um, that, okay. Now I remember, um, fucking dude, no sleep. And then this awful beer is just messing with him, but they found his Ahab. Right. And I'm just thinking, is this a Moby Dick reference? Yeah. I couldn't get where it came from.
00:25:50
Speaker
That's my guess. So is he the white whale and then Ahab's trying to kill him? Is that what the, I don't know. I mean, that makes sense. Not you say it. Uh, I mean, that's the whole point of that, that book. Um, but I like just addressing him as a Loomis cause that's, that's what he is. Um, yeah, that's, that's just call it, just call it what it is. Um, all right. Where the fuck are my notes here? Uh,
00:26:16
Speaker
Oh, they go, so they go to the, they go talk to Kelly, uh, who was the victim, the waitress from the, you know, they pulled a little brick stunt on and everything. And this is where enter Loomis again, it says, he's not who you think he is. He's like this last name and everything. And this like shakes the crew. They're like, who the fuck is this? They're like, you know, Leslie's like, I don't want, you shouldn't be doing this. You should, I told you not to do it. You need to get away. You're not taking this seriously and all this stuff.
00:26:43
Speaker
Um, and it gets a little unhinged for a second, right? You think like this movie is just going to like kind of turn upside down. Um, but they reopened in, uh, and I really, at this point, I have no idea what the fuck's going on. I'm like, is, what is, what is going to happen here? Is he going to like turn on them? Is he just faking it? Um, is Loomis crazy? Like what the hell's going on here? Is this like a cat and mouse game or are they on it together? Yeah. I mean, I liked, I liked that even though Leslie had already killed somebody on screen at this point,
00:27:12
Speaker
When he confronts the crew about talking to the girl, that's when you first get a sense that this guy's crazy and could be a serial killer. We already saw him slice up the librarian. Yep. That didn't matter. It was the look in his eyes like the person who was acting as Lizzie.
00:27:31
Speaker
draw a blank on his name. I don't have it either. Yeah, no, he definitely did. Because he was kind of awkward, but like, but like relatable, like it's like a dude you've met before, which is kind of unsettling. Yeah. I, I remember first time watching this really confused throughout most of it. And like, as I've watched it more and more over time, I'm starting to pick up more and more clues about, you know, the survivor girl that happens for two thirds of the movie.
00:27:59
Speaker
There's hints throughout the whole thing if you look back on it and you don't get that until later on and I think that's what I appreciate about this movie is You watch it two or three times and you have a whole new meaning for it every time. Yeah, I could see that I picked up on that
00:28:16
Speaker
Like I was like, there's something going on here. Uh, there's definitely something happening that is going to reveal itself in the end. Like she loves him or whatever. And, uh, no, that's not what happened. Uh, you just find out a little, a little secret about her. That's all. Um, but they, they decide to proceed on the documentary. He briefs them on his plan. Um,
00:28:36
Speaker
Every single trope in a slasher movie is covered. He takes the batteries out of the flashlight. He rigs up the power to this cabin. Now, how did he say he was going to get them to the cabin? That part I don't remember. Do you remember?
00:28:49
Speaker
It was early on, I think it's lore that every year on such and such night, the kids break into the cabin and party. So it's like the anniversary of his death or whatever they call it. It's like the dare for the cool kids or like a group of people to go to that house. So I think he kind of banked on people are going to show up there.
00:29:11
Speaker
gotcha yeah he was talking about like how he owns the house and he could get it from the bank if he wanted to but he's not going to or something like that um okay now that makes sense but yeah he was um all the little things that we were talking about like the um
00:29:24
Speaker
If the battery's out of the flashlight, he has the power. He can just turn off and on whenever he wants. All these little things like nailing the window shut and making sure that all the safe exits are gone so that if you're going to jump out a window, it's not going to end well for you because it's on the second floor or whatever.
00:29:43
Speaker
Very trim all the branches to a tree so they won't hold anyone waiting. Yeah, the tools in the shed like they're all sabotage like the handles are broken already or you know that the sledgehammers, you know, whatever about the fall off anyway, which shows up later in the movie. Yeah.
00:30:00
Speaker
Yeah, they just all these little tiny things that you just like, I mean, I'm not I'm not a director of a slasher movie, you know, I would think practically on all these things. And they're like, Yeah, we're one step ahead of you, though. So a real dumb, you know, I mean, they really checked all the boxes that you need to get answers to.
00:30:22
Speaker
Um, when you're watching these slasher films, because we've all been watching these movies and we sit there and go, don't fucking go in there. And they always go in there and whatever we think is going to happen happens. And this guy explains why it happens. And I think that's what I appreciate about this movie so much.
00:30:37
Speaker
Yeah, there's like a psychology behind it almost like he kind of steers you where he wants you to go and everything. It's kind of like a home alone, but like a lot more twisted, you know, he Yeah, I mean, except nobody's trying to get him. But just the length and the planning and he goes out to do everything. But it's time for the big night.
00:30:56
Speaker
Um, the crew asks for tips, which I thought was kind of funny and ironic how everything happens. You know, how do you survive an encounter with a serial killer, a murderer, whatever, a slasher? And he says, don't be a virgin and run like a motherfucker. So I would be dead immediately because I cannot run.
00:31:18
Speaker
but yeah just the amount of thought that went into this was was great even down to the practical makeup when he's talking about putting that ointment on that like boxers wear so like he does get hit it doesn't swell up I'm just like
00:31:30
Speaker
And then he mixes it with flame retardant as well. Yeah. All this little shit that they just, you're like, God damn it, this is brilliant. Now I'm talking myself into a higher score. I do need to rewatch this. It's one of those ones that you're going to love even more every time you watch it, you're just going to go, oh, I need to break this one out every couple months or something like that. I mean, I've rented this movie so many times from Blockbuster.
00:31:56
Speaker
showing my age a little bit. I was just going to say, there's only a few of those left in existence, my goodness. But the stage is set. It's showtime. The first couple, as he says, they come upstairs. There's the cliche, a couple having sex up there, and he wastes no time. And taking out the two lovers lets him get going for a minute first, lets him have a little bit of fun before he ruins the party.
00:32:23
Speaker
But the news crews in there just like, holy fuck, this is actually happening there is motherfucker, which I don't know why they're so shocked. Like he said, they already killed somebody in the library. Like, why were they so that's where it kind of started getting. OK, like what's happening here? Like, like you had such a good movie and you could like the back third of this movie is nowhere near as good as the first two. No. Yeah, I agree. And and I think that's where it started for me is like, OK, what are you complaining about? You went through the prep. He's killed somebody in front of you.
00:32:52
Speaker
You've helped him prank these people. You've seen the psychology. Why are you that surprised that it's actually happening?
00:33:00
Speaker
Right. Right. And he already killed somebody. Yeah. Yeah. It's not like it was a, you know, he murdered somebody right in front of them and they just kept going. And then you're like, Oh my God. It's glossed over so quickly. Like you almost forget it happens. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. So, well, it's enough for them. They don't want to do it anymore. Taylor gets on her high horse saying she wants to save the day and she can't watch as all this shit's happening. And so they say they're goodbyes in a very dramatic way. Leslie doesn't want anything to do with this. Rips his microphone off and says, get out of here.
00:33:30
Speaker
Um, but that's not enough. Taylor and Todd and other camera guy, you know, uh, they have to save the day. So they go in and they try to ruin his plan, but this is where the movie takes another twist. So there's like that little part right there. Like we were just talking about that's kind of like, eh, but then it's like, oh shit, this motherfucker knew this was going to happen.
00:33:50
Speaker
the whole time. He's one step ahead. Um, you know, he's Taylor's trying to like push the point across like, well, he just murdered your friends upstairs. Go look. And there's nobody there. They're like, well, what the fuck happened? Um, I just choked out there for a second. Sorry. No, I'll edit that out. Nobody has to worry. I do that every once in a while just to see where the fuck my notes are at. Plus I'm trying to get through this beer. I'm blaming it on the beer in the two hours of sleep.
00:34:18
Speaker
You're good Okay, I got rid of that. Oh my god. Okay, so don't drink arrogant Basterdale. That's the first bad beer of the year. Oh My god, then I just chugged it War power to you. I'll give you that fucking brutal dude. Oh my god. It's the worst thing I've ever oh That is terrible. All right. I got nothing but great things to say about this Magic City IPA though So at least one of us is enjoying our beer that we drank tonight my god Okay, where the fuck were we?
00:34:49
Speaker
Oh, yeah. So Leslie's one step ahead. He's on to the next victims. This is Stoner's, which, you know, you've seen them killed in every fucking horror movie of all time. And but I liked I liked this death in particular, not the first one that was kind of basic. I just get stabbed in the neck with that little like mini site thing that he had. But the second one, when the news crew like sees what's happening and he's got the post hole digger to the guy's heart and he digs it out with him. I mean, that's that's got to be my
00:35:21
Speaker
fucking brilliant. Just, that was awesome. So I like that death, but I also like how he foreshadowed it during the prep. He talked about, you know, no one's allowed in here, but my girl, and if they go in there, I'm going to get them with the postal digger.
00:35:37
Speaker
And it's a very quick like two second section there. And then it happens exactly like he says it will. See, I wouldn't have even picked up on that. I didn't. I didn't know that. No. OK, that's awesome. Little foreshadowing. It's a definitely it's probably the best kill, though, in the movie, I would say easily.
00:35:53
Speaker
The only thing that would have made it better is the end of the movie if they had gone just that extra step and just did it, you know, like, we'll get there. But just if they just done that, that's that's the kill of the week. But anyway, so they regroup, you know, and oh, hey, they open up the door to the van. And there's the couple from the beginning, which this is when you start dissecting like a slasher movie like how this motherfucker
00:36:18
Speaker
And like a span of five minutes, get the bodies from upstairs through the window, down and propped up into the van with nobody knowing or seeing anything. Cardio. Cardio. Yeah. You don't even think about it. You're just like, oh my God, there they are. Or you're just like, of course they are. That's exactly where they would be.
00:36:41
Speaker
Alright, where the fuck were we? Oh, this is killing me, man. I am running out of steam. I'm sorry, guys. My kid, like I said, kicked my ass this week. But yeah, they find themselves literally in the middle of a slasher movie. But the advantage is they have a blueprint, right? Because they talked to him and interviewed him. But they're part of the victim list now. So like, who's really ahead? You know, which I thought was kind of interesting.
00:37:08
Speaker
It was also interesting because around this time is when they realized that, I want to say Katie was the original victim girl. Kelly. Now Taylor's realizing it was never her and it's me.
00:37:27
Speaker
And that's kind of the turning point for everything. It's like, oh, now we know why everything's happening this way because he's planned it. You know he's planned it. And now they're finally putting it together.
00:37:39
Speaker
Yep, yep, it's at that. Well, because they find her like, she thought they thought that she was a virgin. And that's what he like harps on in the beginning of the movie. And she's banging the shit out of some dude upstairs. And they're like, what the fuck? What are you doing here? So they talk about their options saying that we have to keep you safe, Kelly, like you're, you know, you're the target if we get you out of here his plan.
00:37:58
Speaker
you know, falls apart and we all survive. And then something happens and she just jumps out the fucking window and leaps to her death. So that plan is out the window, not unlike herself. But this is, like you said, this is when Taylor has that epiphany. She realizes that, you know, she has been the last girl the whole time. So I guess she's a virgin. I mean, I kind of saw that coming. It was kind of heading that way. But
00:38:26
Speaker
a cool reveal nonetheless. They regroup, they're trying to get out of there. This is where the movie starts getting a little messy. They just start killing people for fun. I didn't remember how the other girl dies or if she dies, but I liked how he killed the other teenager by throwing a noose around his neck and then just jumping off the fucking second story of that barn.
00:38:51
Speaker
knocking himself out in the process. But then Loomis shows up, right? We're thinking, this is gonna be awesome. Like, where's his head? And then he's quickly dealt with, so is the last camera guy. And then it's a cat and mouse scene, right? The same way said it was gonna be. Taylor grabs the weapon from the shed, uses it, it breaks. So when she grabbed that weapon, it instantly made me think of the opening scene of Scary Movie. When was it?
00:39:22
Speaker
Carman Electra has the option of a gun, a grenade, or a banana. The chick in this movie knows everything in that little tool shed is sabotage, and yet she still goes in there and grabs the first piece of shit she could find.
00:39:36
Speaker
i forgot i forgot okay i forgot it like when i'm watching this movie i'm like oh she's got a weapon now cool and 30 seconds later she swings and i'm like oh fuck i forgot to sabotage it this movie made me feel very stupid for a brief moment here uh but yeah i mean it just goes to show you like this was this was a fun and thought-out movie because you do get caught up in it you're like okay well final girl versus bad guy like let's go um
00:40:04
Speaker
But it plays out the way he wanted it to. I think he said that it was. I like what he said. The end of this night, I'm going to be arrested, captured or dead. And I think he's OK with all three of those options. He just wants to go out as Leslie Vernon. He just wants to be talked about and feared. Yep. Yep. And well, now he's made that.
00:40:28
Speaker
I don't know if they talked about anything happening before this night. Like I know that it's based on like a myth that he's supposed to be dead or whatever, but did anything happen before? Was there another murderer or anything? No, there was never a murder, but there was the, I mean, there was the murder of Leslie himself.
00:40:49
Speaker
And, you know, he was thrown into water. I forget what kind of water it was. And his body was never found. You know, some say it was ate by turtles. Some say you can still hear this. You know, the idea is that the land that his house is on is haunted. And I think that's kind of the myth of the whole movie is that it's haunted land. You don't know what's going to happen. Right. And I think that's the whole point of the whole story there. But I think
00:41:18
Speaker
I think ultimately he wanted to either get away or die because that's where the fear comes from, because you don't have a survivor girl if you kill everybody. If you're arrested, then the fear kind of goes away. You need to kind of get away and potentially people get out of jail.
00:41:39
Speaker
I think he needed to not die, not be arrested and have that survivor girl, someone to spread his story and spread his fear because that's what you need is that one person.
00:41:50
Speaker
who tells a person who tells two people that tells three, just so and so on. And the story gets bigger each time. Yeah, the whole telephone telephone thing. And that's pretty much what he tells her at the end there is, you know, I knew you were the one. And as she crushes his fucking skull in the cider press, and I thought that that would have been if they had just gone that extra mile and just made it like, give me it, man. Just let me see. I heard the cracking and all that stuff. I thought it was going to happen. And then

Sequel Potential and Film Impact

00:42:16
Speaker
it didn't.
00:42:17
Speaker
Feel like they set this movie up to if they ever want to make a sequel And that's kind of why they did what they did at the ending So he's not dead. I'm a big fan of knowing when to end something and If it's one and done be one be the best one and done you can be and I feel like this movie could have been that by having a better ending especially a better ending to Leslie and
00:42:43
Speaker
I also just found out, I watched this movie two days ago, they made another one. There's a prequel about his story, which I haven't watched yet. I didn't know about it either. Yeah, I just found it when I was renting the movie off Amazon. So there is another one out there. I believe it's more of a prequel.
00:43:04
Speaker
Okay, interesting. I'll have to look into that because, I mean, this was intriguing. I wonder if they have the same amount of cameos or something like that. But yeah, this was definitely a fun movie. If you guys like Slashers, I mean, obviously you just heard us talk about the whole fucking movie, but it's not like there's a deep plot line. We're not really ruining anything for you. You can watch this and still have fun. This is something you can definitely rewatch over and over again. Like Nick said, probably pick up a bunch of more details that we missed.
00:43:32
Speaker
But this was fun. Solid recommendation, as always, buddy. I appreciate it. Have you seen one cut of the dead? I can't say I have. OK, I would recommend that. That will be. OK. That's your homework assignment for the next time you're on here. But it's a very it's there's a 38 minute introduction.
00:43:52
Speaker
Okay, and it's it is the movie it's one cut of the dead and it's a very low budget like Korean film I think You you have to power through right because there's parts where you're like, dude, what the fuck am I watching here? And when you get to the back half of that movie, you're like, this is brilliant. This is so fucking great. I like

Closing Remarks and Future Events

00:44:15
Speaker
I was so bored at parts of that first movie. I'm like, everybody says this is so great. I just I don't get it. And you get to the halfway point. You're like, OK, we're heading somewhere. And then I'm just like popcorn, this little kid just like this is amazing. It's the best thing I've ever seen. But that's it. You might see the parallel here between like that movie and this movie, or at least like why I keep thinking of that with this.
00:44:38
Speaker
But yeah, so good luck on all the You know upcoming events that you guys keep putting out, you know, they're always always a lot of fun. I know this next one sold out But you when your tickets for sale on cookie table 3 we haven't nailed down a date yet We were gonna start selling them tomorrow But to my knowledge, we are not ready to do that yet. Yeah, I mean, it sounds like it. And they just redid their brewery, if I'm not mistaken, which is pretty cool. They moved. Oh, they moved. Because they used to have kind of a smaller place. But now this looks like a big time brewery. Took over. It's like an old Elks Lodge or something along those lines. They bought one of those and they have, I think it's like 150 parking spots they have. They have a giant outdoor seating area for the actual brewery and taproom itself. There's pinball machines and graffiti all throughout the entire taproom.
00:45:51
Speaker
And then they have this massive field outside that we're going to take over and just pack it full of different breweries, different vendors, cookies, food. DJ is just going to be the beer shit show with cookies in a good time.
00:46:06
Speaker
Hey man, what more can you ask for at the end of June? It's all matters. Right. Well, thank you again for coming on here, buddy. Appreciate having you. And we'll see you again in a couple months if you'll have it. And yeah, we'll go from there. So thanks again. Guys, next week, I'm not sure exactly what we're doing yet. Oh no, wait, that's the one year anniversary. We're fucking doing hereditary. That's what we're doing. We're drinking some cool beers.
00:46:29
Speaker
We're definitely doing a limited edition, I guess variant, maybe not limited edition, but it's a variant of Bourbon County. It's one of the nicer ones. It came out in 2022. Yeah, 2022. It's that double, the double barrel one. Did you have that one? Or the toasted, toasted, double toasted, whatever the hell it was.
00:46:49
Speaker
Whenever I have those, it's at a beer share. And it's always near the end of a beer share. So maybe I don't have a rough way to end. Yeah, so that's where we're drinking. That beer is awesome. And I can't wait to drink it again. Probably drink some other cool shit. But yeah, gonna be fun. Thank you again for tuning in. Nick, thank you again for joining. Thanks for having me.
00:47:09
Speaker
go check out field by hops. They're always doing cool events. They post funny stuff. Um, you'll see how many beer degenerates we have in Pittsburgh. Cause those dudes are drinking like every single day. There's always, what's in your glass? Wax Wednesdays. Like why not get wrecked on a fucking Wednesday night when you have to work Thursday? We have maniacs in this group. Absolutely. I mean, we have wax Wednesday, tip of Thursday. Um, you know, two of the middle of the weekdays and we're drinking the heaviest beers you can find. Um,
00:47:37
Speaker
So yeah, I mean, it's a great place for people to come together, talk beer, get beer recommendations, show off your cool beer pictures. Shit on people about their food choices. We're always talking about different food wars that we've had in the past. You know, if you'd rather have crinkle cut, french fries, curly french fries, you know, it's not all beer, I guess is what I'm getting at by that. That's true. Yeah, it's definitely a community. It's just a fun hangout spot. It's a really kind of way to think about it.
00:48:02
Speaker
Yeah, no, you're not wrong. NSYNC or Backstreet Boys. I know that was like a recent debate, and I sided with NSYNC on that one. I know it wasn't popular, but regardless. Yeah, all right, guys. We'll see you next week. Thank you again for tuning in. Thank you again for all the support. Sorry for the fucking mind farts today, brain shits, whatever you want to call it. My brain, I am fried. I need to go to bed. We'll see you next week. Cheers.
