Introduction and Spotify Wrapped Insights

Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Thanks, Jack. Welcome back to Little Hops of Horrors Podcast. I'm John, your host as always. Thank you again for tuning in for the final weeks here. Really do appreciate the continued support. Just watch the Spotify wrapped ah today that just dropped for everybody. I'm sure you guys have seen it on social media because everybody just has to share what they've been listening to all year. But what's cool about being a content creator is that they do give you some statistics and you see how much the you know podcast has grown or whatever and you know where it's been in the world and all that stuff. um And while I know for a fact that my Spotify metric is messed up because my actual program that i use platform that I use to distribute everything ah tells me otherwise, still some really cool reassuring numbers. you know it was It was cool to do. I got to see how many listeners I had this year, which was significantly more than I ever thought I would ever

Upcoming Episodes and Smile 2 Preview

get. so
00:01:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
You know, just thank you. um So like I said, yeah, we got a couple more episodes to go. Just scheduled our last two with Austin ah from Fright Mayors. We got our awards episode coming up ah very soon. And then we're going to be wrapping it up with Evil Dead 2013 at the beginning of next year.
00:01:52
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah But this is the last ah new movie we're going to do, most likely. and We're doing Smile 2 from 2024. Yeah, I know it's kind of weird. We did ah two sequels in a row ah without doing the originals, you know, or the first ones in the film ah series, I guess.
00:02:09
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
This one's sitting at an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.9 out of 10 on IMDB. Our score's a 7.5 out of 10. I really did like the first one a lot more. We can talk about that in a little bit.

Discussion on Smile 2 and Beer Choice

00:02:22
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Ooh, I forgot to write down the fucking beer stats for today. But I will tell you that it is stout season as we're getting closer to Christmas and, you know, the weather's obviously already cold over here. That's the wrong app, idiot. I open up Spotify.
00:02:37
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah We are drinking um black clouds right from Dancing Dome out of Pittsburgh. ah They're double vanilla. I love this beer. It's one of my favorite series ah locally, and if it was available all year round, I'd be a lot poorer, that's for sure. um It's an 11% stout, so it's a little heavy to have on this Wednesday night when I have to work tomorrow, but whatever. We like to live on the edge here every once in a while before the kiddo gets here, you know what I mean.
00:03:00
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, yeah, 11% and apparently nobody has checked this particular one in. So that's a bummer. I did. I gave it a four and a half out of five. So let's see if we can find an older variant or something here. Uh, real time. Uh, so 4.38, if you look at any other, uh, like gear or whatever. So it's a pretty solid beer. We're pretty well respected. And like I said, uh, you can grab this if you're in the city of, uh, Pittsburgh, go grab one. I will say the prices went up a little bit. This was 26 bucks for a four pack. cool I'm getting to the point where I'm not okay with buying these beers anymore, but my God, um still really solid. All right, so like I said, um I really did enjoy the first one a lot more than than this one.
00:03:45
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um I don't want to give too much away before we get to spoilers because I know this is a newer movie and it just hit like the streaming services You don't have to pay out the ass to like rent it at this point You know, it's a couple bucks or a free trial or whatever um But you know what we did like about this movie solid visuals really cool special effects as always I mean, that's what you get in these small movies, you know all two of them and Naomi Scott was was really good as as like a hot mess of a pop star, trying to hold it together. um Good twists, right? There's some good, I love the opening, I love the ending. It's just kind of that filler in the middle that I wasn't too keen on. And and maybe it it deserves a re-watch, I don't know, maybe I was too harsh, maybe I had too high of expectations, because I did love the first so much, mainly because you know Austin and I talked about it on his podcast earlier tonight,
00:04:36
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
that you know the the premise of the first one was you know a psychologist um losing

Sky's Journey in Smile 2

00:04:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
her fucking mind to you know this smile entity whatever it is she's seeing things she's hearing things she's losing her mind and you know she has credibility you know she she's the one person that if she's telling other doctors like listen there's something going on here and then you know they don't believe her like that that's kind of like make it extra creepy if you're not going to believe somebody with those kind of credentials and you know prestige whatever the fuck you want to use ah who are you gonna believe yeah like so you know this girl in this movie stood no fucking chance especially considering you know she was like a recovering addict and like all this other stuff like nobody's gonna believe her they're just gonna assume she's fucked up again or whatever so um anyway all right so what didn't we like about this movie
00:05:27
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
uh the sense of direction misdirection that i love so much in the first one is uh is is okay that was wrong because the ending was definitely misdirection so i never went back and edited this uh regardless it's it's more predictable the jump scares feel a little more cheap um you know whereas the the first one there was a lot of um you you finally feel like she's getting her she's being heard she's being listened to she'd be invalidated um And in the sequel and smile to like they would kind of give you like a little signal that You know, oh shit. It's our you know Smiles back whatever ah you I don't even know what the fuck this thing is. Is it is it an it? Is it a smile? Is it an entity? Like I don't even know how to address it My notes are all over the place if you hear me dressing my different things later on the spoilers just you know deal with it I don't know what to tell you um you only have to deal with this stuff for a few more weeks so and then I That'll be it. I did actually entertain the idea of doing a yearly episode for all four followers. It'll stay, you know, stick around um and just do like the, you know, the awards episode, the top 10 we watched this year, you know, Scariest Shit, Coolest Kill, things like that. um We'll see. Maybe, maybe it'll be something to do or just do an occasional episode here and there. ah Not a great way to keep a following, but you know, the the loyal listeners and that's something I have noticed on on the Spotify rep that I have a loyal following. So I thank you again for for sticking through um all the craziness and the unprofessionalism and not having my shit together and just sticking by me. So I do appreciate that. Thank you. Cheers to you guys.
00:07:04
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um okay anyway where were the hell were we oh uh what we didn't like about this i i just i feel like this you know some movies don't need to be sequaled if that's uh you know if we can make that word a verb um after After seeing this, I feel like Smile just would have been better as a standalone horror film, and that's that's it. um I just think that that one was was damn near a perfect horror film. I thought it was great. ah Why we didn't review it before we reviewed this, I don't know, but um you know that's just ah just how it goes sometimes. So if you haven't seen this movie, come back around the eight minute mark, um and you know I'll try not to ruin anything for you until then. But ah yeah, if you have seen it, well, we'll see you on the other side for spoilers.
00:07:53
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
I gotta say I'm gonna miss those drops. They're so much fucking fun to hit. That one is so cool. That's like my favorite one. I think I don't know. They're all fucking cool. I love the intro. I love the outro. I love it all. This is fun. Anyway, so let me take a sip of actually have some water here too, because like I gotta stay hydrated because of fucking work tomorrow.
00:08:13
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
so I can't get too fucked up. Like I'm getting old and like I'm 11% stout, fucking smacks me hard. um And just, you know, I have to function tomorrow. So the opening sequence, a lot of fun, right? I love that it picks up right where the other one left off. And it definitely keeps you guessing. You're kind of wondering what exactly they're doing or, you know, where's this going? And I like that he's trying to pass it off. This this thing, he he has it figured out apparently, and he's trying to pass it off to somebody.
00:08:41
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
who deserves to die, right? So he's going after these piece of shit scumbag fucking drug dealers. It doesn't exactly go as he planned. And um I'll be honest, I was blindsided almost as much as Homeboy was ah by that truck. Normally, I feel like I can see that stuff coming, but definitely not this time. It definitely caught me off guard and got a reaction out of me, an audible reaction. But anyway, we're on to the protagonist. Now we're introduced to Sky Riley, played by Naomi Scott, which we already mentioned.
00:09:09
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And she's on Drew Barrymore, right? Cool little cameo here, her little actual talk show that she hosts. And Sky's talking about her comeback. She's sober now and she's ready to head back on tour. She wastes no time, you know, they get back to, ah you know, her rehearsal, you know, getting ready for this big whatever fucking show she has to do.
00:09:27
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um and she gets hurt in the middle of it and this is when you find out about the car accident she's got some crazy gnarly fucking scars but it's too much for her to just like not be able to deal with so she goes to meet her drug dealer Lewis right to go snag some Vicodin she gets there and dude is paranoid as shit yet he's coked out out of his fucking mind And Skye's like, this is the last fucking thing I need. I just want to like get my shit and get out of here. Tries to get him to hurry up, only for him to come screaming out of his room, falling on the ground, choking to death. Sort of. Sort of. That's not exactly what happens. Uh, because the smile happens, right? Uh, stands up and slowly bashes his fucking face in with a 35 pound weight. And that's just an awesome fucking death. Cause that kind of, like I've dropped that like on, not
00:10:15
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
on my toe like directly but it is like falling on the ground and then like leaned over onto my toe and that shit fucking hurts I've smashed my fingers in between weights that shit hurts I couldn't imagine taking one to the face like multiple times oh but anyway I do love that about the smile series is they do these pretty gnarly fucking deaths in here um and they normally have some great jump scares but not not many in this one But anyways guys goes home to try to forget that any of this, you know even happened chug some nasty fucking water I I feel like ah the first time I bought that out, or you know, i so I've seen that in in a gas station I bought it. I was like, it's a like $6 water. It has to be good, right? I'm gonna try it and just hopefully my mind is fucking you know blown
00:10:59
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah That didn't happen. And if I remember correctly, it's fucking like carbonated water It's like like soda water and so for her to chug that water like good for you, man I like ah I can't chug fucking carbonated things my I get like I don't know my throat gets tickly or itchy or whatever the hell that sensation is I don't know. But anyway, so she goes I'm chug some nasty fucking water she showers gets ready for bed and she's you know trying to just put

Intensifying Hauntings and Humor

00:11:22
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
this all behind her and but she's barely fucking hanging on and she's haunted by what she saw earlier and this is the first indication that the smile has taken hold and she hears like a squelching noise and that's what I hate about this fucking movie is that that like trigger that cue right it was like the other one didn't have that
00:11:39
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And if you were to just, like, make him appear instead of giving us that trigger or something to look for, I just feel like it would have been more impactful, but that's me. um But, you know, she sees Louis' corpse, you know, standing there, and anyway, back to sleep. So I can't imagine she slept well that night, but it's back to business as usual, and it's time to go on tour until she gets a mysterious text, right, that comes across her phone when she's getting ready, asking if she was at Louis' apartment last night. So you're kind of wondering,
00:12:09
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Is this the cops? Who is this? Is this like somebody, you know, you you just don't know because it just says like unknown name or whatever. um And she never answers, right? Because again, she's interrupted by that fucking squelching noise, right? She's in like her dressing room or whatever. And the anti-climactic reappearance of Louis' corpse is standing right behind her, mimicking her moves or whatever.
00:12:30
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and i just that just did nothing fucking for me i just thought it was very dumb cheap like the first movie was just so good i don't know i just fucking loved it the first movie and this middle right the meat of this movie is just what i didn't like the only reason this court is as high as it is is because of the ending the ending was fucking great i loved that misdirection and how it kind of Explained everything I just I just felt like they could have done more with the middle of the movie they could have Lessened the cheap jump scares and so I heard it always be a little creeped out. I think it was just a dishwasher though look Anyway, it's time for meet-and-greet with the fans right which I could never fucking do um How these people do it? I don't know but maybe maybe maybe it is a good thing I didn't you know like get famous Off of this fucking shitty podcast like I don't think I could handle dealing with people
00:13:23
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
like that, that just like, your music saved me. If somebody came up to me and said, your podcast saved me, I'd be like, but ah buddy, you got like, you have more problems than, you know, but its yeah if it did, which I highly, highly, highly dealt.
00:13:39
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um You're welcome. I guess I don't know. And I'm sorry that I'm pulling the plug on it. I don't know. ah But yeah, I guess I don't know. I don't know. But yeah, I have the energy you'd have. ah You can't have a bad day, right? You can't just have a down day. Everybody has a shitty day at work, right? Everybody just has like a day they get up wrong side of the bed, all the cliches, and just having to be on your A game and someone is just like in your face so excited to see you and you just have to like reciprocate like you have to like give it back to them equally otherwise they're like oh you're a fucking bitch or you're a fucking asshole you know whatever you can't just be like a normal human being that doesn't want to deal with people that day not when you're in that spotlight so like Jesus I I do not envy these people at fucking all just not being able to go like McDonald's or like a gas state just anything you can't live normal this would suck this would be fucking terrible
00:14:29
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um But and then on top of that, you have to deal with what she doess deals with here, this super stalker at the meet and greet to do with the fucking pimples all over his face and like the shit stain underwear and all that stuff that gets a little too close for comfort to the point where they you know kick him out with fucking security.
00:14:45
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and then the that I didn't understand this part she was in like the credits and other credits with the yeah the trailer you know this little girl with a creepy smile and she just stares at her and smiles and nothing happens literally nothing happens it's just nothing happens why that was there i I don't know but this is all start you know starting to add up for her and it's just becoming a little too overwhelming for sky so she reaches out to Gemma who she had a recent falling out with um here's another note about the fucking water ah saying can we talk about how she drinks the water in this because she does like
00:15:20
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
chug like i it cannot be healthy right like you gotta breathe a little bit here girl my god I don't care what your therapist says because that is the reason behind this um but to clear her mind in the midst of all this awaiting you know Gemma's reply or whatever she sits down to write a song which doesn't last long because she hears a glass break behind her And on her way to cleaning up, she notices the shirt that she signed for this super psychotic, you know, creepy pimple face fan on the floor. And as she investigates further, she sees, like, clothing all along the hallway, all of his clothing. So, you know, kind of insinuating that he is naked somewhere in her apartment, which is very creepy for a single girl, um you know, in an apartment, just knowing that there's a naked dude in here. Oh, dude, that would be fucking terrifying. So that's Zina, because that would be very creepy for anybody.
00:16:13
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um and lo and behold there is a naked smiling man at the end of the hallway and you're just waiting for it to happen you know it's going to happen it does it's a decent scare um you know a nice little fun chase scene which I actually thought is is was really clever um you know obviously that ends with her getting to the door and seeing Gemma who's finally arrived but that whole scene of of him running and you not seeing how close he is but you just hear this the sound of the footsteps getting a little louder kind of makes you you know feel like you're a kid again remember do you'd like shut off the lights and like run upstairs ah to like the safety of the lit room that you were running towards or whatever before whatever gets you it just it had that same kind of like I don't know it like it went after like a childhood fear right there kind of tapped into that pretty well
00:17:01
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
but anyway the uh the rehabilitation on their friendship commences right so they sweep away some generic incident that divided these two for over a year and in this all of this you know ladi dog getting backed on good terms bullshit uh sky confesses to seeing i'm really having a hard time saying sky because my dog's name is sky so i'm like waiting for her to come out here at any minute like why do you keep saying my name um where she confesses to seeing Louis die in the manner in which he did, which would pretty much stick with you for you know just about anything.

Emotional Struggles and Past Traumas

00:17:37
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Gemma offers to stay the night, right? as like As any friend would, I guess. And that's only so we can relive the extremely traumatic experience that was the accident that killed her lover, which would be fucking terrible. um you know They just got in that fight. We'll talk about that anyway. and I was not a fan of that scene at fucking law. I thought it was really dumb.
00:17:55
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
this scene was cool like when they first you know kind of tell you what happened um and just seeing that that that trauma like there was a lot of good acting and horror this year um and she she really relayed what you know just how awful it would fucking be to wake up next to you like your loved one in a fucking car accident and you're stuck you can't move you're just waiting and you just you just have to stare at your dead fucking boyfriend like that's it That would be awful. That would be awful. Anyway, luckily, it's just a nightmare and Skye's telling us, you know, how she's broken and she's having a hard time dealing with everything. And then there's another cheap trigger jump scare where, you know, Gemma is smiling at her and all this other stuff. I did like they turned her head into a car, though. That was kind of cool. It reminded me of that fucking scene from ah
00:18:40
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Brain dead where the chick gets her head shoved onto the fucking lights on kid. It's kind of cool ah But she wakes up, you know again sky does from ah the nightmare within her nightmare To realize that she's very late for rehearsal and not in an inception sequel So but this does not go well for her um The whole rehearsal thing she's having a hard time keeping it together. Obviously she's like losing sleep. She looks like shit. She's tired and Um, she has a meltdown in the middle of this because, you know, this smile thing is fucking with her thinking she broke her leg, but she didn't. Um, so she's, you know, clearly already kind of spiraling here and mom sees all this. And because of all these outbursts, she asks, or, you know, are are you using again? And she says, no, absolutely fucking not. Blah, blah, blah. And she gets a little defensive, but onto the next major scene.
00:19:30
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah where she has to go to this gala thing with ah Darius, which this, I don't know, his character was fucking annoying. um But all she had to do was read from a teleprompter. Just read some shit. um Very easy, low stress, blah blah blah, and it couldn't have gone, you know, more wrong. She gets on the teleprompter, it freezes immediately, she doesn't know what to fucking do. ah It was a very uncomfortable scene, right? It was just like tough to watch, it was very awkward, it was just a train wreck.
00:19:58
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um Nobody mentions the smeared makeup on her face. They just kind of like let her go um And then it gets really bad. Obviously when she sees her dead ex Paul um who is Jack Nicholson's kid, I believe um And he walks up to the stage smiling very creepy and she's hallucinating all this shit This is you know, really into her head. It's it's fucking with her pretty good she shuts down tries to get herself right and um You know just as she she feels like everything is about to be okay. There's a great jump scare And instead of, you know, she feels like it's Paul, you know, attacking her, but it's not. It's the old lady coming to comfort her and she shit whips her off the fucking stage through a table like it's fucking WWF and like some kind of title fight match. It's fucking hilarious. I laugh so hard for that. But this is likely, you know, this is this is, you know, causing irreparable damage ah to her new image. And so she moves on to the source of the unknown messages.
00:20:57
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, and you know, I guess she, you know, like I can understand when all this shit's just going wrong and it's, it's, somebody's just saying, I can help you. I know what's going on, you know, and they send proof of Lewis's video. So obviously they have something.
00:21:12
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um but at the same time when you be a little skeptical that like maybe that's just this thing fucking with you but that's the you know it's a psychological mind fuck that's what this movie is but you know logically she goes to meet him and mortis which is the guy's name he's an ER nurse uh hatches a plan suggesting that she temporarily kill herself to starve this cosmic parasite that's what he says of its host so it's a bold tactic right i'm not sure how it's gonna you know work out but we'll find out here in a little bit won't we I will say that this part lost me a little bit.
00:21:43
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
uh when when we're going through all this because i like you know the the mystery of the smile you don't know the backstory or whatever and he's going through like your number eight in line to took out this cop at brooklyn and blah blah blah took out my brother blah blah blah you know and i don't know when you find out that morris was just a pawn all along um i don't know i just i didn't like seeing and behind the curtain you know uh mystery is fun sometimes and not knowing and not having to explain everything is fun sometimes but you know Sky leaves in a panic when one of her friends or somebody at the bar recognizes her she gets the fuck out of there pops some pills and Starts packing her shit cuz she wants to run get as far away. as She can't but she can't Right because she stopped by West Side Story in her fucking room It's all the extras and dancers and actors and actresses. They're all just like Creepily following her around the room. It was such a dumb fucking scene. Just it's laughable. It wasn't scary It was just I don't know why that was in there
00:22:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
I don't know, I don't know. um She gets overwhelmed, and at this point in the movie, they felt it necessary to interject this insufferable, just painful, hard to watch, shit acting, over the top, unnecessary fucking bullshit rendition of what took place that night of the accident. Just so cringy and just unnecessary, just, I don't know, it was really bad. I hated that part of the movie.
00:23:11
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and again it was just another dream she wakes up in this wellness center that mom says she checked her around into and uh you know i need another sip of uh some water here so forgive me for a second i only have a little bit of my beer left because like i said i did record earlier tonight too um anyway so her and mom get into a bit of an argument because of how she's handling all this. This is your last chance. There aren't any more. You're going to fuck this up for everybody. You know, there are a lot of people count on you, blah, blah, blah. And now the entity comes after mom, takes it, takes fucking, takes mom over. I don't know why I couldn't say that for a second. She punches a mirror, takes a glass shard.
00:23:52
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Sky starts freaking the fuck out thinking it's gonna come for her and mom starts carving herself up instead, right? Stabbing the shit out of her neck or chest or stomach or whatever her fucking eye Jesus Christ like that was a pretty graphic fucking death a little poor use of CGI You'll see that that's not gonna age well here in the next 10 years or so Wish that just do practical

Horror Peaks and Realizations

00:24:13
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
effects man. Just do you got a big budget, but just fucking do practical effects. They're always better anyway um sky freaks the fuck out obviously as anybody would in this situation she sprints towards the door only to realize that she's the one that did the stabbing she's the one that killed mom and murdered the fuck out of her mother and she keeps like waiting for it to come back to life waiting for her mom to come back and it just doesn't happen and she sees mom just dead on the floor and that's going to be our
00:24:46
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Yep, that's the killer of the week. That was just a fun one. I liked that nice little curveball. And we're heading in the right direction here, right? This is where the, you know, the the kind of, the movie really takes a shift. Now, Sky at this point is fully unhinged. She breaks out. She's covered in blood and some fucking, what do they call that? Like, not a robe, but it's a, I don't know, it's a something just like a gown.
00:25:05
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And she steals a gun, fucking steals a car, and it's delayed. Gemma jumps in, because she's like, you don't know how to drive. And then they just go full Grand Theft Auto, just Staten Island. um And and this this part was a little annoying, and it just got a little too far-fetched. I should have probably seen it coming, how this was going to end, but I didn't.
00:25:25
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and it was at this point that you realized that Gemma was the smile thing all along and Skye digs down and just finds resolve to take back control for a moment and it reveals that she's driving so it just kind of goes back and forth it gets a little messy here right all just for them to go see this yeah ER r detective nurse guy Morris um who conveniently forgets something almost the second they start doing this experimental procedure to try to kill this smile thing ah But that's that's all you need is once Morris is out of the picture you finally realize who's in control right the smile thing is has been in control for a long time and um They get into a little fight and Skye bites the fingers off and then she stabs herself in the neck with a needle You know essentially killing yourself. That's it But it's not
00:26:19
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
this is the thing basically laughs at her and says yeah there's nothing in there it was all a ruse everything was fine you know the needle's completely gone she's totally fine and so you're just expecting you know i i don't know what the fuck's going on at this point right all of a sudden she's in this was it like a freezer of a pizza hut and now she's on stage in front of like thousands of people and she's staring at the smile version of her and there's like a creature crawling out of her and it's like opening her fucking mouth in front of everybody nobody's reacting right nobody knows what the hell's going on but they do show that like mom's there so you're like so is this like another hallucination or was everything i just watched a hallucination like what the fuck is happening and that's when you realize and this is why i love the ending so much because the whole thing that s smile needs is to you know to live to pass on is it has to kill itself or kill kill whoever its host is in front of somebody else so it can latch on to them
00:27:16
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
What better way to strengthen yourself or do whatever than to kill yourself? Or kill your host in front of thousands of people watching because she's a ah famous pop star on stage That's the reason she got chosen for that.
