Happy Halloween! This week, we're checking out the "scariest movie ever made"

I don't agree with that statement at all, but I did enjoy this movie and I do believe it's worthy of some recognition. Also, we check out a festive IPA from a local brewery. Hope you enjoy, Cheers!

So, I don't know, I'm just not as festive as I normally am.

Annual 'Sinister' Review

00:01:11
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But, you know, we're still gonna go trick-or-treating this stuff tomorrow, try to scare some kids with a chainsaw. It's gonna be a good time. But, um you know, I thought i thought in in in light of of the holiday today, we would review the scariest movie of all time for the third year in a row. And that, of course, is Sinister from 2012, directed by Scott Derrickson.
00:01:31
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
who did uh most recently black phone which is kind of some mixed reviews same uh same lead actor in this movie ethan hawke um the exorcism of emily rose which we covered last year and we're going to be covering with austin from fright mares here on his podcast in the next month or so so definitely check that one out looking forward to that as well uh and then another recent one from him is deliver us from evil so he's he's a big uh you know kind of a heavy hitter and In the work in the people you know probably don't realize but sitting in a six out of six point eight out of ten sorry on IMDB and a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes are ratings a nine out of ten. This is absolutely worthy of you know some some solid recognition for being one of the scariest movies that has come out.
00:02:15
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Over the past probably 25 years is it's a fun movie. There's a lot of really cool things to pull from it um I don't think it's the scariest movie of all time where they got that metric from I'm not entirely sure I think they more of like a suspense builder kind of thing and and we'll talk about that and then likes and dislikes here before we jump in and We are doing a festive

Festive Beer Tasting

00:02:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
beer today. um This is another local guy from Dancenome. We just had them recently, but they dropped this too and I couldn't resist. So they did creepy Lustra, right? So Lustra is one of their ah flagships. It's actually their flagship IPA and they do a bunch of different variants on it. You know, double, triple, they do a logger version, all that stuff.
00:02:51
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Well, this time they did a creepy version. um And it's sitting at 5.8%. It's just a nice, easy-going hazy IPA, like Citro, and I can't remember the other hop in it. Maybe it'll tell me on the label here. I don't see it anywhere. Citro Amarillo. um Yeah, and then, yeah, 4.17 on tap. This is a nice, easy-drinking beer. You know, we love our haze, so we're gonna take a sip.
00:03:17
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and that's that aren't so what do we like about this movie right uh...

Atmosphere and Comparisons

00:03:21
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
it's a very dark movie right there's the they definitely uh... it's sinister there's some cool there's some cool shit that happens here it's definitely an unsettling movie at times uh... really good acting solid concept great villain design uh... and there are some really good scares uh... in this uh... it's it's just a well-crafted movie the score is good uh...
00:03:46
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
it It has kind of a true crime ah movie, like not movie, but like not quite documentary, but it it feels more in the realm of true crime than it does like pure horror at times, right? Like this came out kind of around the same time as the Conjuring. So I always kind of put these two in the same, you know, kind of ballpark. And and I think for scares, I think Conjuring kicks the shit out of this, um which I do mention in my notes a little later. So if I repeat myself, you're gonna have to forgive me, I'm getting old.
00:04:13
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um but you know this this is definitely a solid movie if you haven't seen it it's a great one to put on around this time of year even though we're running out of days for you fairweather fans us horror fans you know we can watch your shit any fucking time um I'm just kidding if you don't want to watch it and ah you know in January I mean, I don't get it because i I love to do it and I know a lot of other folks love to do it, but if it's not for you, it's not for you, but thanks for listening

Is 'Sinister' the Scariest Movie?

00:04:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
anyways. What didn't we like about this movie? It's not the scariest movie of all time. It's just not. It's not the scariest movie ever made. It's not even close, in my opinion. um But horror is subjective, right? it is it is you know Different people find different things.
00:04:48
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
uh terrifying um you know some of the movies that that really get under my skin are uh insidious from well i don't remember what year that was but the first insidious that one gets under my skin uh mama is another one the conjuring is great satan slaves like there's some really good fucking really creepy movies um out there and this one just doesn't uh i don't know it's just i'd never I would never consider this like top five scariest movies or top 10 scariest movies I have ever seen. Not even on Elm Street and I think it's scarier than this movie. um Is it creepy? Yes, at times, absolutely. um It's not like atmospheric enough for me, um like to be that scared, like like less is more with the score. I thought that they use the music like a a little too much. um When they do use it, you know, there are some really cool songs to pull from that.
00:05:37
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um But it probably would have been scarier if there wasn't just like constant music and there are some like Really cheap jump scares that I just I fucking hate like it's it's such a lazy out like Come on, man. You you put together a solid movie here. You're better than that. You know, it's like how do I fuck up this one particular scene? We'll just throw in a jump scare real quick to try to so you know get some cheap scar I don't know. It's just I hate when directors do that like you're better than this go for I don't know try to
00:06:05
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah But yeah, we're we're just about out of things to talk about we're gonna jump in into spoilers here It's probably gonna be a shorter episodes getting ah close to my bedtime and I gotta get this up and running for you guys tomorrow Yeah, we're literally recording ah like six hours before this drops. So um Yeah without further ado We're gonna jump into into spoilers if you haven't seen it come back around those six and a half minute mark if you have seen it We'll we'll see you on the other side

Unsettling Opening Scene

00:06:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
That's right, it's spoiler time. So um what I do like about this movie is immediately it opens up with um like a really dark and intriguing scene. um That old home video of the the family being hung, right? And you're not quite sure where it's going. It's very dramatic. youre It's just's definitely an unsettling scene. And then there's a quick cut scene to Ethan Hawke moving his family into this new house. And you're not quite aware of the correlation just yet until he goes to the backyard and sees the trade and you're like, oh, fuck.
00:07:04
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
this dude um just moved his family into the fucking murder house now is this before is this the family that gets hung like you don't know so they do a good job of like little misdirection here in the beginning and he plays Ellison who is like the main character I'm not a cardigan guy personally, but the one that he wears like the entire fucking movie does look pretty comfortable. I'm i'm not gonna lie. ah But he's not a big, you know, he's not big. What's the word I'm looking for here? The local police aren't exactly excited for him to be here, right? Because you know, it
00:07:39
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
he's a controversial writer, right? Like one of the guys that he wrote about ended up getting like a killer got away because of of something that he wrote. And he made a lot of money off of it and everything. So anytime he shows up, there's just this kind of like negative, you know, like outlook on why he's there. They're not a fan of it, right? Not at all. So you know, he's he's already on the wrong side of the law here.
00:08:01
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
without even doing anything they're trying to get him to leave and he's like that's not gonna happen you know it's not gonna be like this I'm just trying to do a job blah blah blah and they all know about that house right like the cops know what happened in that house and all that stuff and shortly thereafter the wife asks you know you didn't just move us in you know a few doors down from a murder house did you and he says no he's not wrong because they moved into the fucking murder house murder house I need more beer or less beer I'm not quite sure
00:08:31
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Unfortunately, we're going to be doing more and more until the end of this episode.

Discovery of Eerie Home Movies

00:08:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But now, you know, enter the catalyst for the entire movie. Ellison comes across some old home movies in the attic. Holy fucking red flag. Ellison knows what would happen in this house. And if I stumbled across some old fucking movies, I don't know if I'd be so keen on, you know, watching them. Just would not be for me. um But I don't know ah and this is where they start, you know, really kind of introducing the score a little bit um am Am I the only person that likes listening to this stuff like outside of horror movies? Like I like to write right? So I have a couple short stories that have been like, you know narrated by a friend of ours His name is Jay Taylor. He's got a ah YouTube channel and everything guy does you know some really cool stuff um It's called Dante's disciples. That's his his narration channel or whatever. He's like creepypasta and I have a couple stories that he's done on there, but I when I write this stuff I like to get into the mindset and I like to listen to you know artists like Knox Arcana Arcana I don't want to fuck up his name, but it's like you know fantastical horror like horror video game music I'm not I'm not sure but every once in a while I just kind of like want to listen to that stuff And I hope I'm not the only one Anyway back to the movie Ellison decides to pop in one of these home movies into a film projector and we're showing the kill from the beginning of the movie and
00:09:52
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and like imagine finding that in the murder house you just moved into like i know he wants to write this book and everything but that's like the biggest get the fuck out moment like if there ever was one but thankfully for us ellison is an idiot and he stays diving further into the collection of the home movies and up next is the family barbecue from the 79 i love the clever little names that they put on everything it's like really misleading Um, and they don't explain how the stuff gets there. I guess if you look at the end where it just kind of reappears and everything comes back, it's like magical. But you know, if it was left behind as some kind of evidence and they just, you know, the police overlooked it after the murders or whatever, like you would just be like, Oh, it's just old movies. I'm not gonna, you know, we don't need this for any reason.
00:10:39
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And so after he watches this barbecue movie, or yeah, the barbecue ah movie, I guess that's what it is, ah he for a second there, Ellison almost does the right thing, right? He almost calls the cops, or he does call the cops, but he almost like turns everything in. But he has a change of heart at the last minute, and he tries to solve this mystery and hope of some new book sales, right? Like he's he's here to write a book, he wants to see it through, he wants to help these families, so he says, um but he's probably just after like another payday.
00:11:10
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Now, I will say there are a few things more terrifying. then hearing something at night and you don't know what it is and this is exactly what Ellison experiences while he's doing some research and when he finds the source you know he panics because it's his son Trevor and he's having some like rather vivid night terrors which would suck and I hope I don't have to ever have to go down that road because if I heard like my kid freaking the fuck out in the living room like screaming having a nightmare be like what what the fuck is happening dude like should I be screaming too like what is that what's going on
00:11:41
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But once that settles back to the movies because why wouldn't you

Protagonist's Descent into Obsession

00:11:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
you know? Why wouldn't you just fucking go? You know to bed and maybe be with your wife or whatever it's like nope I'm gonna keep watching these really fucked up movies and getting a really bad headspace and start becoming an alcoholic again and all that other stuff um I do love the originality in of the kills in these home movies like the one with the ah the family being dragged into the pool while they're like tied to some patio furniture Like that's pretty cool um But this is the introduction of Mr. Boogie and this is a very creepy scene um like Just the way that they said these films up with like that that super 8 camera I don't know if that's exactly it, but it reminds me of something along those lines um and And you know, it's just it's it's so unsettling the way that they kill these people ah in the movie and To watch that guy walk underwater
00:12:32
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
it's like one of the creepiest things um I have ever seen in a movie and so So like I said, this movie does have plenty of creepy things. It's just not the scariest movie of all time They're unsettling scenes. They're unnerving scenes, but there's not like get under my skin I'm not thinking of mr. Boogie in the water next time I go in like I thought about jaws for fucking 20 years and um But you know before Ellison can get a good look, ah something happens to the film, and it catches on fire, and so Ellison couldn't really get a good look at him. And to prevent this from happening again, he starts recording it on his camera and uploading it to his computer so he can start like copying and pasting images and all this other stuff so he can you know kind of start putting a case together or whatever. But before he can dive in any further, there's an argument at home between Trevor and Mom, and Trevor knows why they're there.
00:13:21
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
sort of because he was sent home from school ah for drawing the family that hung ah there's a family hung in a tree and Ellis and secret is still safe right because the wife doesn't know that it happened in their own fucking backyard um she still thinks it's nearby and it's fucked up right so she's upset and he's like that's all you're upset about like you don't know where it happened right just tell me you don't know where it happened like he was kind of suspicious when he's like questioning her about that stuff but uh and he said a beer
00:13:51
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But hey, it's on to the next family's demise, right? um Watching these home videos um like reminds me of... uh the defeo family marver let murders why can't i talk tonight tonight what the fuck is going on it's so irritating guys like and i'm on episode like 90 right and i'm still tripping over my words over the stupidest fucking shit and it just gets really annoying sometimes so i'm sorry thank you for bearing with me i always appreciate it but these these home videos uh the way like in it's probably this one in particular um but it reminds me of the defeo family murders and if you don't know what that is you you
00:14:24
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
probably recognize the name Amityville because that's, um you know, that's who started all of that shit and and how that that story kind of came to like came to be or whatever. It's really fascinating time suck. They did ah an episode, I think it's bonus episode 11.
00:14:43
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um And they covered it. And it's a really intriguing story, right? So like, Ronnie DeFeo like killed his family ah with like a high powered rifle. Nobody moved like it's it's like some other force like silence the weapon and And he was able to like murder his family there was the toxicology report came back There was like nothing in the blood for him to like you know the family to be totally out like they would have heard there's no defense wounds or anything like that like it's just super super strange and then what happened with ah I can't remember the family after that the Lutz family I think What happened with them after with all the paranormal stuff? That's what like really made everything crazy, but I
00:15:23
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
It's a crazy fucking story and this this particular murder ah video kind of reminded me of all that and that's where like somebody's kind of going from um you know room to room murdering the people tied to the bed and everything like stabbing them through. um But Ellison finds some clues right in watching this while investigating all that but he's interrupted by some more unnerving creaking noises followed by a power outage right how convenient.
00:15:46
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and he does exactly what anyone would do in this situation. He goes to investigate the creepy fucking attic in the middle of the night, right? Cause like, I'm a 36 year old man who weighs over 200 pounds.
00:15:57
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
right um And I, I don't have an attic, but if I did have an attic and I heard creepy noises, I would not be going there and be like, babe, we're going to get a hotel room tonight. And that's the end of it. I ain't fucking doing this, but hey man, whatever. ah But at least he finds something cool, right? He finds some nice drawings of the murders and all that stuff like that before calmly falling through the ceiling in the middle of the night.
00:16:19
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
uh for some reason there's a snake up there too they don't really explain why that was there but can i just say that like this motherfucker makes when he's going on his little like nighttime adventures he makes so much noise and the family just sleeps right like i mean this one they got up and everything because he fell through and got hurt or whatever but like he's like rah! like screaming and shit and falling over and dropping stuff like later in the movie and nobody gets up and he's like dad what the fuck are you doing or like honey are you okay just none of that it just happens and and like that's I don't know that port just kind of stuck out to me
00:16:52
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But on the plus side, after he, you know, reports this to the police saying, you know, there might have been an intruder. I don't know. um He finds out way too much about squirrels from his new inside scoop at the station. Deputy Deputy so and so I am sorry. I'm not on my A game tonight. I can't fucking talk. I need more beer.
00:17:13
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
back to the research though, right? Ellison finds Mr. Boogie, um, in all the videos now, right? And he's starting to connect the dots. Um, and this is where, um, like you feel the movie kind of shift a little bit, right? Like he's, he's on the boogie, but boogie's already kind of like two steps ahead of him. Um, like there's there's a scene in particular where he's, he's trying to like examine what happened to him when everything, you know,
00:17:38
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
With the power outage or whatever he had like a camera and boogie moves on the screen behind him right very fucking creepy And then he notices all the hands trying to pull him down through the ceiling um Definitely, a you know a cool fucking scene there and he's a little freaked out now, right? So he's like I need some bed I need I need some sleep ah with my wife and then he gets woken up at like 3 30 in the morning to the fucking projector rolling and it's the footage of the family hanging in the tree and it's like hello a Hello fucking screensaver um But now Ellison is like on edge, right? Because like he's trying to shut this off He's trying to figure out the hell's going on and he sees boogie for the first time in real life in the hedges out back Or did he and I like that kind of like just they leave it in the air They leave it up for you to kind of determine what you think um And he goes outside and he finds it as Trevor rights and he's in the bushes Well, he finds Trevor out there You don't know if it actually was boogie or if it was just Trevor or you know It's his mind playing tricks on her or whatever and I like that they never actually answered that question
00:18:33
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
this is the the part of the movie that i thought really took away from um like its scary status right there's like a scene with a dog in the backyard for like no fucking reason like you don't know where the dog came from and there's just a bunch of kids behind him like yeah that does nothing for me like i don't care why is that here um like are they hunting him is that what it's supposed to be it's just I don't know. I don't know. um Like I said, there's there are times that this this movie feels more like a true true crime thriller than it does scariest movie ever made.
00:19:08
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
I don't know. um But like I said, i I came to this realization. Actually, i I just skipped over that part of my notes because I mentioned it and like what we liked and what we didn't like. um Is it unsettling? Yes. Is it the scariest movie ever made? Not even fucking close. But I came to this realization in the middle of my notes moments before the best jump scare of the fucking movie and one of the greatest, ah you know, in like modern Horror history I would say and there's another home movie right involving a lawnmower great suspense in that scene obviously um and and you don't know where it's going, you know, it's not going to end well right in and it doesn't obviously as ah you know, he's just kind of going along and you're just listening to this mower and then it's like the volume pops up real quick and he like Runs over somebody's fucking head and you don't see it, but you hear it. So points for originality It's gonna be our
00:20:01
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Yeah, um that scene was fucking awesome. ah Great jump scare. You're not, like I said, you're not quite sure what's going to happen or how it's going to end and then it just, it's it it just happens. So they did a great job at like, ah you know, timing that jump scare. um So after some more research, Ellison, it's all he does, right? He's just always looking at these fucking movies and getting deeper and deeper into this world and it's just like,
00:20:24
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
it's It's consuming him and it becomes like a you know appointed contention between him and his wife and everything but he discovers after reaching out to an expert that boogie is actually Bagole, I don't know how to fucking say it ah But he's an ancient child eating deity right from like Babylonian times or something like that But this is another scene that really I just found fucking laughable and unnecessary and it knocked it down a whole half point for me and um and almost more but I did enjoy the rest of the movie a lot so ah but this is the part where like the dead kids are in the house and they're playing hide-and-go-seek in slow motion right while Ellison is just walking around the house with a bat and they're just like making noises and he keeps turning around just barely mixing them like what the fuck is that it's so stupid it's drawn it's drawn out like it doesn't have to be there
00:21:09
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
it would have been better had they not explained the noises right now you didn't know the kids were there um and then they gave you like one good jump scare or something like that in in the end of it um yeah i don't know that that scene just really took took me out of it i wasn't a huge fan um but at least that that scene ends well right the little girl um drawing everything ah on the wall in front of his daughter um kind of revealing you know to her now what what is happening while she tries to sleep but now the jig is up for Ellison right because his daughter blows his cover right telling mom that she drew a picture the little girl drew the picture of hold on what the fuck does my notes say here
00:21:51
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
She drew a picture of a girl that used to live here. That's what it is. Okay. Um, Oh yeah. She used to paint. That's what it is. I didn't put that in my notes. I'm a dummy. All right. I need some beer.
00:22:01
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And this is how, yeah, so this is how Tracy comes to find out the grim details of their new living arrangements, right? And there's a big blow up, but they make up pretty quickly, which is kind of dumb. You know, like why even had the huge fight if they're just gonna make up like 30 minutes later? um This scene ah in particular really got under my skin. It's very, very, very fucking creepy. Now we're aware that where this is likely headed, right? Like he's probably in boogie sites right now. You're not quite sure.
00:22:28
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um what's gonna happen when it's gonna happen but but things are really starting to to kind of ramp up here and it's going in a bad direction for the family like um the fact that it's coming to to fruition like the way it is right where they're being filmed with the same recorder at night like it's starting already oh dude It's it's fucking unnerving um and it and it wakes Elliott up and he he goes to find he hears more noises, you know, it's the fucking ah Projectors on again, whatever it is And you know, he's kind of like almost like hallucinating right because this this shit's just really getting to him now
00:23:06
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um and and But it it finally becomes too much for him to handle.

Fleeing and Facing Consequences

00:23:10
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and He burns the film, scoops the family, and gets the fuck out of there. And finally we have you know a horror movie where the main character you know seems to have some sense. He knows when to mail it in, when to admit that he's wrong, time to go. But can we talk about, more importantly,
00:23:25
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
the downgrade of the century like i'd be pissed if i were his wife your husband moved you out of a fucking mansion right like this massive beautiful home with like old like huge library like big windows and like fireplaces and just this massive beautiful house right like i don't know author like i guess authors make like really good money because that's a huge fucking house and they moved into this tiny little home where like a family was murdered like what the fuck man um and I don't know that just the the swap between the houses that's not what I was expecting them to go home to at all and I could see why like the the kids were like hey can we go back home like yeah because I was way cooler than the shitty house they live in now
00:24:06
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um with all the ghosts and everything, but at least they had a little souvenir to bring home with them. And it's the film, right? The film that he burned in the back of the old house is now in his attic at his home, his big home, his mansion home. And of course, instead of putting this behind him and trying to just walk away from it, el Ellison pushes through and watches the mystery film that has been left to him and before he can watch it and he receives an alarming phone call from deputy so-and-so saying that hey man you fucked up by moving things are already in motion you should have probably just stayed here but you know now i can't help you and he's like ah fucking whatever
00:24:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
goes back to his little science project and and putting everything, you know, putting the footage back together of all the missing children, right? There's just little snippets of all these videos that were kind of taken apart um from the actual film, and he glues it all together and and, you know, watches it. And it's revealed that all the missing children from earlier in the movie are revealed to have partaken in the murders of their own fucking family.

Grim Ending Revelation

00:25:06
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and Allison has is having a very hard time dealing with this so much so that he can't even function anymore because his daughter ah poisoned him and and ah yeah so little like little little little curve ball there at the end um really enjoyed that wasn't expecting and and I love when when endings have like kind of a you know they're not happy endings nobody gets away there's no final girl there's no final guy like I know it's just bleak and just dark and and hopeless you know I like that in a horror movie a lot because you know too often do we have like the happy ending somebody gets away everything is fine again la di da
00:25:47
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But now, helpless on the floor, Ellison watches as his daughter films what's about to be his last few minutes alive before she acts as him to death. um Like I said, love the ending, love that the box got left behind with a new film in it, and you know, Boogie carrying his daughter away into the realm with the other kids or whatever. um But yeah, solid ending, very fun concept, the um you know, the movie overall.
