Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Thanks, Jack. Welcome back to Little Hop's a Horse Podcast. I'm John, your host as always. ah Thank you again for tuning in for the final few episodes here. Again, sorry about last week. I hope everybody had a good Thanksgiving that did celebrate just too much stuff going on for me to get, um you know, get an episode out and everything. But we are back this week.

Review of 'The Devil's Rejects'

00:01:00
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
This is The Devil's Rejects from 2005 directed by Horror's most polarizing director, Rob Zombie. This isn't either you love him or you hate him kind of thing, and so I figured I'd review my favorite movie from the Firefly trilogy. This movie's sitting at a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, because those guys fucking suck sometimes. 6.7 out of 10 on IMDB, our score, 7.5 out of 10. You really have to like some of the weird shit that that Rob Zombie does.
00:01:31
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um you know this is this is the I think this is the best one of the trilogy, um and and for a couple of reasons. It's not as weird as the other ones. Three from Hell is just kind of fucking really underwhelming. I think they waited too long to pull the trigger on on doing a sequel to The Devil's Rejects. House of a Thousand Corpses, just not for me. Too trippy, too weird. um Great characters in both, but just just a little too out there with like the weird cutscenes and the flashy shit. and just It was just a little too over the top for me. This one you know settled down a little bit, and that says a lot considering and
00:02:03
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
what we're going to talk about later. a Beer we're doing today. So this is this is kind of an interesting one.

Tasting Innocent Gun's Tequila Cask Beer

00:02:09
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um It's Innocent Gun, right? That's the brewery. They're out of Scotland. This is a tequila cask ah blonde beer with lime and grapefruit, right? So it's like aged in tequila casks, I guess. um No, it just says, oh yeah, yeah, it definitely was. Okay. ah Yeah. Anyway, it's kind of, I don't know, it's kind of weird. Let's take a sip.
00:02:32
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
I mean, it's only 5.1%, sitting at a pretty shitty rating on here too, 3.16 on untapped. It's not bad, you know, it's just, ah I don't know why I said it like that, bad. It's not bad.
00:02:46
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah it's it I don't know, it's just a relatively easy drinking beer. and Not something I'd seek out again, but I'm not a tequila cask beer kind of guy. Kind of adds like a really, um like aggressive, like, and I like my barrel aged stouts, um you know, like bourbon or whiskey or rye, any of those, um they add like a nice, you know, flavor profile to them, but tequila just kind of, not for me, it's like ah it's like a weird aggressive flavor, but I don't like tequila in real life. Anyway, what do we like about this movie?

Character Development Highlights

00:03:17
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
So I'm a sucker for great characters. I've talked about that in previous episodes. And the members of the firefight Firefly family are all great in their own right. Captain Spalding is my favorite. rich Why can't I talk tonight? Why can't I talk tonight? You guys know this. He's my favorite. Rest in peace, Sid Heg. I always loved him in this movie. um This is the best of the trilogy. Like I said, the casting is pretty much on point. Everyone's really good.
00:03:40
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
at what they do. um We'll talk about, you know, we'll point out specifics here later in the episode. ah The music, of course, the music is fucking great in this. It's just like all these awesome hits from the, you know, that arrow, you know, Midnight Rider, fucking Almond Brothers, ah Leonard Skinner, you know, Freebird, that iconic ending. um And anytime I hear these songs, now I think of this movie in particular. um So, you know, I just think that had like a really good impact or whatever.
00:04:04
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, what we didn't like about this movie? Well, as much as I love Sid Hagg, I could've, you know, gone without seeing his ball sack, right? Which happens pretty early on in the movie. Like, was that really fucking necessary? Did we have to put it in the film? Couldn't they just, like, adjust the camera angle, like, maybe a little bit?
00:04:20
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
I mean I'm all about like equality and nudity and everything and you know these horror movies so the the ladies can get their fill too but or dudes whatever the fuck you like um but that I don't know who's who's craving to see the old man's ball sack I just don't know and and boy do you see it in uh Jesus Christ um Other things we didn't like about the movie. um it's it Sometimes his style, zombie style, is just a little it's a little too much. It's definitely uncomfortable to watch at times. Not creepy, not scary, not gory. just you know It's just a little too much. and ah maybe Maybe some more on-screen violence would have been cool. I don't know. um That's just me. I always like more stuff like that. um Yeah, I don't know. i just It is what it is.
00:05:07
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah Like

Critique of Film Elements

00:05:08
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
it's just his style. Sometimes it's just a little it's a little cringy. It's a little Hard to I don't know. We'll we'll talk about it. I have a couple notes here that I'll point out specifics and everything I don't want to give too much away if you haven't seen it at your fault. um This movie's been out for 20 fucking years But if you have seen it, we're going to spoilers and we will catch you on the other side
00:05:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
That's right.

Spoiler Territory Discussion

00:05:36
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
It's spoiler time. So like I said, this, this movie is like the, is like the least trippy of, of the movies or that the trilogy and everything. Um, house for thousand corpses, you know, fun film. You got some, um, you know, young, what do we got here? Okay. I got a text item. I know my wife's going to be on her way home soon. You guys are familiar with that.
00:05:54
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
the old hurry up and fucking gett get recording text because I'm going to be home in 20 minutes. um ah Luckily, it doesn't take us that long to record anymore. Anyway, um yeah, so this is like the least trippy of of the the the trilogy and everything. Three from Hell was okay. I thought 31 was a lot better. And if they had just figured out a way to tie their like these characters into that movie, I mean, I thought it would have been better off because I feel like that dude. Oh, what the hell is that guy's name? Richard Ball or something like that.
00:06:21
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um His character's really good in 31. I'm actually looking it up right now so I don't fuck it up anymore. ah What's his name? What's his name? Richard Break. That's his name. um I knew it was Richard something. But, you know, he had a really good character in that he was really dark. And and Zombie's good at that. Zombie zombie put together this this trilogy and ah and I love all the characters and the Firefly flaming.
00:06:42
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Why can't I say these two words together? Fire, fly, family. I don't even know what the hell I just said. Fire, flay, family? What the fuck? Anyway, um but yeah, this is just like the most approachable of the three. And you can see that he was heavily influenced by movies like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And honestly, like i I think he would do a great job remaking it, even though the remake that they did in what, 2003 or whatever, um was a really solid fucking film. And we're gonna try to record that before this is all said and done.
00:07:11
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, but yeah, like I, I think that he would, he could take a run at it. He did such a great job with Halloween making, um, you know, Michael Myers like this terrifying, terrifying fucking, uh, you know, slasher.
00:07:23
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And Leatherface is already fucking terrifying, so I would really wonder what he would do to take it up a notch and zombify it in his own way. But this film very much feels like it exists in the same universe. This could be happening right down the street, that this family could be an extension of the fucking madness that took place in that movie. I love the true crime opening here. Um, you know, it's

Opening Sequence Breakdown

00:07:47
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
pretty cool. I always do like that in the movie where they're talking about the murders and they're, you know, talking about the family and everything. And, um, but he doesn't waste much time, right? The opening sequence is definitely intense. There's a raid on the house. Um, they're showing the family just kind of like unsuspecting in their beds and sleeping and whatever else. And, you know, Otis has like a dead chick, like in bed with him naked. God knows what he's been doing to that. Um, cause they're really fucking depraved, right? This family is just fucked up. Well,
00:08:11
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
All hell breaks loose. Um, you know, they start firing on the fucking family. They give them a little warning and they don't back down. This family does not take shit from anybody. They don't give a fuck. They're going to go out with the guns blazing as we'll find out later in the film. Um, but yeah, the bad, I love the armor that that one guy has. I can't remember which character he is but because he's not on the screen very long. And like I said, I'm not that familiar with house of a thousand corpses because it's just not one of my favorite movies.
00:08:34
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um But I love like the armor and he just goes after the cops, takes a few odd himself before he goes and you know, it's just, it's a fun opening to a movie. It'll definitely pull you in. um And then, you know, ultimately, ah the police do win. They kill a few of the family members. They take mama or mother, whatever the fuck she's called, baby and notice escape, where they eventually do link up with Captain and Spalding after the memorable opening credits.
00:09:00
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, and like I said, this film is just very uncomfortable, um, and and I gotta say that sometimes his like, over-the-top, white, trashy gimmick, that dirty, grungy, grimy, just, it's just a little much. You know, I can't imagine that that set smells good like at fucking all.
00:09:17
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, I will give credit where it's due though. Uh, Sherry moons on me. She catches a lot of flack, uh, for her being in every fucking movie that she could possibly be in that he directs her as a part of or whatever. Um, she was good in Halloween and she's good in this, you know, she's, um, you know, she's super cute. She plays this role really well because she's like, you know, she's attractive, right? So like guys are going to gravitate towards her and she's really demented and and super playful. You know, she's kind of a unique character.
00:09:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um you know, especially in that hotel scene where she pulls in that lead singer, or that older guy and everything just to, you know, fuck them up. and and And that whole motel scene is just pure chaos. There's so much to cover there. like you know when they get back to the room and they're holding everybody hostage and they just shoot brian possain in the fucking face and now there's a naked chick and a gun rape scene like what is what the fuck you know like where where do you where do you script this where are you like i mean i've written some shit right then and i try to be
00:10:19
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
you know, weird details in here and it makes you kind of wonder what happened to Rob Zombie early in his life to to really come up with some of the shit that these characters say and do. um And again, we'll talk about, you know, some more specifics here later on. um Spalding already got his little, you know, cameo. We saw his balls. He had that 50-50 dream and, um you know, he had his his his commercial cut short that he had because they're, you know, out looking for everybody now.
00:10:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um He gets the call that he's got to go. He's on his way and his car breaks down and I fucking love this scene I think it's very very funny as he needs a new one and he talks about his super secret clown businesses supersedes anything you might need for this car or whatever He's you know, she plays it off and he says that that line did I stutter bitch fucking punches her in the face and then jumps in the car with her kid and just the whole thing what's the matter kid you don't like clowns that whole fucking exchange of just how fucked up that is like imagine some old dude just comes and punches your fucking wife in the face or like you're a little kid and some dude dressed like a clown punches your mother in the face and then get you you know kicks you out of the car and threatens to kill you and your family jesus christ and he's just laughing about it leaving you know what i mean like the the characters are so dark and the amount of pleasure that they get
00:11:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
you know, fuck in with people. And it's so evident in that motel scene, you know, ah Otis and Babe, you're having their fun, you know, they're making a strip and do this and... you know just it's it's really just weird and and like I said it's just uncomfortable but after they have their fun ah Otis has to go fight the two guys off outside I don't know why they even left I can't remember what they say there's just so much happening in that scene that it's hard to like pull in you know all the details but he you know eventually does fight off the two men and he delivers another memorable speech and this is a really dark moment here too he calls out
00:12:07
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, that guy's faith moments before beating his fucking head and asking god to strike him down And if you're that guy on the ground who's pretty much helpless, right? You're like, this is it and you're hoping in your final moments that something you know Something's going to intervene and it just doesn't and he looks at you and he says I am the devil and i'm here to do the devil's work and then fucking kills him like wow wow just you know impactful right and i don't know i just i think this movie's fun i think it's great um it should be a little higher i can see why people it's it's it's the grungyness in in the the you know crossing like going over that line like crossing that line of being like so like too uncomfortable at times um it's probably why i don't have it higher um this is just a personal favorite of mine
00:12:55
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
You know, it's not an all time rate or anything like that. It's just a, you know, it's just a fun film. and And I really only like, you know, the parts mainly when they're on the screen, like even as good as the sheriff is because I think he was cast really well. um That that officer, that that sheriff is exactly the kind of dude you want working this particular case where he's willing to kind of go outside the lines a little bit here and, and and you know, cross his own lines, you know, and just because these people don't give a fuck. They just don't. um But you know at at the end of the day, you know when they finally reveal, you know babies in the in the motel with the girls And you know the one gets the gun and she thinks you know She finally has her and she finds out that the gun was empty the whole time and that's such a mindfuck She did all of this with an empty gun all of that control

Film Inspirations and Humor

00:13:42
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and degradation ah with an empty fucking gun like it's just Man
00:13:49
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah Mom takes a fucking knife to the chest while the one girl, you know, she escapes and she gets headbutted by Captain Spalding ah As he finally does arrive at their rendezvous point rendezvous rendezvous rendezvous. rendezvous We're gonna go with rendezvous. I need a sip of beer
00:14:07
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Now this next part I was hoping to get some more um out of it because you know you wonder where he got the inspiration for these characters and and it is you know addressed in the movie that you know some it was from the Marx Brothers or something along those lines and while you don't actually find out he just got the names from them you don't get like the actual characters themselves, you know like where they came from. um He just got the names from them. And you know they even call in the self-proclaimed Marx Brothers expert and tocoin you know to come in and talk to the police. And he just goes on a rant, really gives the police absolutely nothing. But I do i would say that this is a moment that many horror nerds would crave to have. like Just imagine, like, ah yeah, John, we need you to come in here and lend us your expertise on modern horror movies, mediocre podcasting, and craft beer.
00:14:56
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um Yes, i willll I'll come do that. Why not? you know I already gave you guys my unsolicited opinion now. ah why Why wouldn't I go tell the police in hopes that maybe I could help somebody? um But yeah, I never really paid attention to this this part of the movie in particular until I was trying to take notes and everything.
00:15:14
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um And just to find out where he got the inspiration for these characters. And you you don't find anything out. You just find out that the Sheriff's a little defensive over Elvis. Oh, I bumped my mouse. and I went too far down on my notes. Where'd we go? Okay, next. Haha. The maid finds the aftermath of the incident in the motel.
00:15:35
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
and, you know, just the dead bodies and shit. And one of the girls, she sprints out of there. She doesn't bother to take off the mask. No, why would you do that? She just runs into the middle of the road where she gets hit by a fucking truck that doesn't audibly hit its brakes until after it runs her over. Like, it could have tried to slow down. It didn't. It just it just hit her and then you
00:16:03
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Um, but you know, like I mentioned earlier, the best parts of this movie is when these three are on the screen together and and um, you know is these these They're maniacs, right? Like that's that's a good word for them. You know, they murder people and they rape people But they still somehow find joy, you know in life and that stuff brings them joy, too Um, but they just want ice cream, right? Just like the rest of us, you know, they they get humanized for a minute you know And and that you know they sit there and they have their tooty fucking fruity before you know they go back to their antics and everything. And I don't know how to quantify it. right like I don't know exactly what it is that i I love about these characters so much. Maybe it's because they're so over the top and ridiculous. um I don't

Sheriff's True Intentions

00:16:48
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
know. Maybe that's why I like them. But I really feel like you know these three should have had another movie or two before Sid passed away. um And you know they waited entirely too long to do three from hell.
00:16:58
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um And, you know, he had a cameo in that because I believed he died while they were actually ah doing the movie. um Anyway, but I'm a little indifferent at at the the intense drama scenes here in the movie because it it does feel like it kind of jumps and it doesn't add a lot to the actual storyline. And maybe I'm just not, I'm just here for the characters and I don't really give a fuck about the storyline. Like I don't give a shit. um There's a little misdirection scene and this is where you find out the the sheriff's like true intentions. he He's out to kill this family. He doesn't want justice. He doesn't want to arrest them. He wants to kill them. And he starts with mama in in that cell when she tries to seduce him and everything.
00:17:34
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But the group finally arrives at Charlie's place, right? And I love that little pranky pulls on them with the water gun and everything. And there's like a really tense moment where you're not quite sure how it's going to unfold. um But, you know, it's time for them to party while the sheriff, you know, yells at himself in a mirror and and gets himself all peped up for his big night.
00:17:53
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But just imagine not giving, like that level of not giving a fuck, right? Maybe, and and again, maybe this is ah a part of the reason why I like this movie so much, like rape and murder aside, like the Firefly family just doesn't give a fuck what people think about them. They want to party. They want to live life their way.
00:18:12
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
They want to kill people if they want to kill people they want to steal they want to do drugs They want to fucking like they're the scum of the fucking earth. They're the worst of the worst been in but they're just like Happy, I don't know. I don't know They're just they're just like a different they do whatever the fuck they want to do whenever they want to do it they they answer to fucking no one and I don't know maybe there's a part of me that just kind of envies that level of like I Don't know. isn's i don't know I don't know what it is. I don't know. I just I just fucking love these three characters in particular. I this scene, I don't know why the fuck this was in the movie, why it's necessary. Charlie wants to buy some chickens for for fried chicken. It said he wants to make or bake chicken or some kind of chicken. And this guy asked them, you're not going to fuck those chickens, are you? And then tells them how to properly fuck a chicken.
00:18:58
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
they go into some pretty unsavory details on which way he thinks is best and it involves cutting the head off and sticking your dick it's why was this in the fucking movie um just little shit like this is why I'm like what just why why is it Is it funny? Because like it doesn't come off as funny. it It comes off as like, this guy's actually done it. you know There's like funny ways to play stuff off like that and that just wasn't wasn't what happened. But you know just as we're done with the chicken fucking scene, um Sheriff pulls up and he corners Charlie and says, this is what's gonna happen. You're gonna have the Devil's Rejects at your house or whatever at fucking midnight so we can finally end this.
00:19:36
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And now it's time for the ambush, right? And he had already had his two hired guns, Danny Trejo and DDP. um Danny Trejo slices a neck and grabs a beer in the process, takes out one of the one of the prostitutes that are working there, um which is a very effective move, honestly. um And the music continues, right? Just just another, I love the music in this movie and I love how it plays with the scenes and how it's paced with the scenes, you know, tasteful slow motion and stuff like that.

Climactic Showdown and Themes

00:20:01
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Otis gets shit whipped out of a window, which is very fucking funny. Spalding gets shot.
00:20:06
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
ah by the sheriff but he's talking shit up until then and and again I love that this dude just they don't give a fuck they're gonna talk shit to you the entire time until they're fucking dead like they're just they're just going to you know like he says he's like you better kill me because if you don't I'm gonna come I'm gonna fucking kill you I'm gonna come back to you know get better and I'm gonna fucking kill you And I believe that. um But the sheriff, for some reason, you know, thinks it's a good idea to bring these people back to their house. Now, why you would bring them back on their turf where they're familiar, they have that maze of the underground prison shit and like that weird doctor dude that was in the first one, like all this stuff. Why would you do this?
00:20:44
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
And he has this super dramatic dialogue and this plan to make them pay for what they've done. And he is a really good character. I think that that he did a great job at being a very intimidating, I don't give a fuck, punch you in the mouth, brash Sheriff like he wasn't he wasn't over the top i thought that he was he was like tastefully done i think that was william foresight who played him um and i i thought he was just a fantastic character a good like uh yin to their yang so to speak um but you know he's he's going through all this shit his dexter monologue you know just talking about what he's gonna do and blah blah blah
00:21:21
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
How do they respond? They talk shit. They fucking fire right back at them. Even though they're tied up and they're beat up and all this shit, you know fucking Spalding shot over there and and all this stuff. They're just fighting till the bitter fucking end. They don't care. And the sheriff starts saying, all right, well, fuck you. And he starts stapling pictures of their the their victims you know to their chests. does Does it to baby? Does it to Otis? Otis gets it to worst, for sure, even though, you know, ah Captain Spalding gets the old cattle prod and everything a couple times and it just gets beat in his fucking head for like 10 minutes straight like that That scene just went on for a while But he's genuinely the sheriff is genuinely enjoying torturing these motherfuckers And now it's time to give Otis his little stigmata, right? Takes these huge fucking nails pounds him through his fucking hands and just leaves him there And these aren't little nails man. These are big thing had to be like eight inches, right? That would fucking be awful
00:22:15
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
But he's had his fun inside and now he wants to, you know, take it up a notch. He sets baby free and he lights the house on fire with Spalding and Otis still tied up and passed out inside. Now,
00:22:27
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
babies running and doing whatever she's getting shot and shit thrown at her and all kinds of crazy stuff. Charlie briefly redeems himself right escorting baby to safety and then escorting himself right into the blade of an axe from the sheriff ah who just happened to be right there and ready for all this to happen. And now it's got to be over right you're just expecting he's got his hands around fucking Baby's throat. He's killing her. She's she's blacking out passing out all that stuff and in a slow motion of the oh shit moment or the oh fuck moment from the sheriff happens when tiny's Massive fucking hands grab his head and start squeezing and picks him up off the ground you know snaps his fucking necks and and and drops them and of course it's gonna be our
00:23:15
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Why am I rooting for these people? Like why was I happy when that happened? Like they're fucking terrible. if I should want them to die, but I don't. And I mean, I can't be the only one that's happy that they survived, right? um So they get out of there and I don't really know what the hell the deal was with Tiny going back into the house, you know, after they all escaped, but you know, it blew up or whatever.
00:23:37
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um But now it's time for one of my favorite endings of any movie I love this ending and now anytime I hear a free bird I think of this ending this movie the entire fucking thing. I just thought it was a Masterclass by zombie. I love the way he put this together. I really did This You know zombie puts these these cutscenes of them acting like a family and having fun and laughing not like They're just I don't they look like people you'd see it like a concert and me youre like yeah those guys are having a good time You know it just he humanizes them again, and he does a great job at that But this is all about to come to an end You know Otis stops the car in the middle of the road because he sees the roadblock up ahead
00:24:33
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
um and that roadblock is set up by Officer Doofy, right, from

Iconic Ending Scene

00:24:37
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
Scary Movie. I kept looking at that motherfucker in this movie and I'm like, where do I know this guy from? It can't be Doofy and it sure as fuck was Doofy. I can't remember what that dude's name is right now, but it's not important.
00:24:49
Little Hops of Horrors Podcast
