Storytime: Origin of the Ouija Board's Name

Now for our fun fact of the day. Do you know where the Ouija board got its name?

One the theory is that it's the French and German words for yes combined. The French word for yes is we, and the German word for yes is ja. But that's actually myth. In 1890, Charles Kennard, who claims to have invented the Ouija board, and his business partner, including Elijah Bond and Bond's sister-in-law, Helen Peters, asked the board itself what they should name it.

Apparently, the planchette spelled out O-U-I-J-A, and when they asked the board what it meant, the board responded with good luck. But here's where it gets interesting.

After this happened, Helen Peters, who was described as a socialite and a strong medium, showed them a locket she was wearing that contained a photograph of a woman with a name written beneath it that they thought spelled out Ouija.

However, the theory is that the woman in the locket was actually Maria Louise Rame, who was a popular British novelist around that time, who wrote under the pen name Ouida, spelled O-U-I-D-A.

So basically, it sounds like the original Ouija board was named after an author. I don't know if I buy that story, but it is interesting. i know. We might have to ask the Ouija board about it, and maybe we'll get some real answers. Yeah.
