Origins of 'Down' Phrases

00:00:51
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Let's talk about the origins of some popular phrases that include the word down. You probably know that the phrase down for the count comes from boxing, but when you say you're going to double down on something, do you know what game that phrase comes from?
00:01:11
Speaker
That would be blackjack. And the phrase down to the wire, got any guesses on where that came from? That one refers to horse racing. Back in the late 1800s, racetracks actually had a wire stretched across the finish line above the track. It helped judges determine the winner when races were super close, literally coming down to the wire.
00:01:35
Speaker
And one more. Did you know that Down in the Dumps goes way back to Shakespeare's time? He used a similar phrase in The Taming of the Shrew, where Baptista asks Catherine, why, how now, daughter Catherine, in your dumps?
00:01:51
Speaker
And dumps doesn't mean trash like we might think, or maybe that's just me. I don't know. I do too. It actually comes from the Dutch word dump, meaning haze or dullness. So it's suggesting a foggy, cloudy mental state, not a trashy one, which that all makes sense to me now.

The answer is, ring around the rosy. There's a popular urban legend that this nursery rhyme is about the Black Death plague that devastated Europe in the 14th century.

Speaker
However, most folklore scholars actually debunk that theory. The rhyme wasn't recorded until the 19th century, hundreds of years after the plague, and the ashes version is American.
00:12:12
Speaker
So it makes for a creepy story, but it's probably just an innocent children's game. Question number 10. Which of the following took the top spot on Apple's most downloaded free apps in the U.S. App Store in 2025?
