Speaker: Before we get into our fun fact of the week, we wanted to remind you that if you'd like to show your support for our show, you can buy us a coffee. Yes, if you buy us a coffee, we'll create a trivia episode with your topic of choice. Just submit a note with your requested topic and we'll include that for you in a future episode. The link is in the show notes.
Speaker: Now for our fun fact of the day. Let's talk about New Year's eating traditions around the world. What lucky foods do people eat to kick off the New Year? In Spain, there's a tradition to eat 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve. It's supposed to lead to a year of good luck and prosperity.
Speaker: In Germany, they eat pork and sauerkraut, which symbolizes progress and prosperity. Eating long soba noodles in Japan represents endurance and longevity.
Speaker: The way the noodles easily break also represents letting go of any misfortunes from the last year. In Greece and Turkey, there's a tradition that involves pomegranates. In Greece, they might smash a pomegranate, and the more seeds that scatter, the more blessings they'll have in the new year.
Speaker: In Turkey, they might sprinkle pomegranate seeds over salads and other dishes, which could bring prosperity into the new year. And lastly, here in the U.S., probably more in the southern states, eating black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread can bring good luck in the new year. The peas represent coins, the greens represent paper money, and cornbread represents gold.
Speaker: I feel like we should have a big feast with all these foods and see what happens. let's do it. It'd be a weird combination with everything, but... I mean, we're foodies. We'd have a lot of good luck next year. Let's see what happens.
Speaker: All right. Let's jump into a quick round of this or that based on today's theme.
Speaker: All right. This or that. New Year's resolutions. Would you rather write down your goals or would you rather create a vision board? Oh, I am a very visual person and I have so much fun with vision boards. So I got to go with that.
Speaker: Me too. mean, I think goals sometimes can just be a little rigid and then you get discouraged if you don't reach your goals or you quit on them. But yeah I like to do like a word of the year or something and then kind of create like some visuals around it. um But yeah.
Speaker: I like we have a little tradition where we put magazines in our Christmas stockings. So I'll usually use those. I love that. It's nice because you have like good stuff to read because, you know, you have kind of some downtime between Christmas and New Year's. And then and then you can just cut up all those magazines and create your vision board for the year. And i don't really buy magazines anymore.
Speaker: So, but I get a lot of junk mail, newspapers and magazines, and I always want to throw them out. And then I'm like, no, no, I'm going to save for when I do a vision. Yes. They come in handy.
Speaker: Don't encourage people to send junk mail, though. I know. Okay. This or that New York Times games. Would you rather play the wordle or mini crossword?
Speaker: This is tough because I love both of these games. Wordle, I don't think I'll ever get sick of Wordle or the mini crossword. i I just love crossword puzzles though. Yeah. So I have to go with the mini crossword.
Speaker: I'm going to go mini crossword too, but I usually play the free games and if mini crossword... could be free again, would be great because can't play it. Yeah, why did they that?
Speaker: I don't know. Probably because it was really popular. Probably because popular. Probably, but yeah, the mini crossword is the best. That's probably the best. I mean, out of the four games I play, how many games do you play on New York Times? I used to play four too, but then I couldn't play the mini crossword, so now it's three.
Speaker: Okay, Wordle Connection Strands? Yes, I play all of those. Those are my other favorites. All right, let's get into the trivia questions. Alright, let's go.
