Exploration of the National Toy Hall of Fame

00:00:51
Speaker
The link is in the show notes. Now for our fun fact of the day. Let's talk about the National Toy Hall of Fame. Did you know the National Toy Hall of Fame has been around since 1998?
00:01:05
Speaker
They inducted their first toys in 1999, which included Crayola crayons, hula hoops, Barbie, and one really popular board game. Any guesses?
00:01:17
Speaker
That would be Monopoly. Checkers and Scrabble got in pretty soon after. They've also added some super simple items like a stick, a blanket, and even a cardboard box.
00:01:30
Speaker
I mean, I guess you can do a lot with those, like, true if you use your imagination. They just put slime in this year, along with Battleship. Trivial Pursuit just made it in, too. was kind of surprised that wasn't already in there.
00:01:46
Speaker
But they do have a system for choosing. Yes. According to their website, apparently judges have four criteria. 1. Icon status. Is the toy widely recognized, remembered, and respected? 2. Longevity.
00:02:00
Speaker
Has the toy been more than just a fad and been popular across multiple generations? The third criteria is discovery. Does the toy foster learning and creativity through play?
00:02:13
Speaker
And lastly, innovation. Did the toy profoundly change play or toy design? That makes a little more sense why some things aren't in there yet. They might not be checking all those little boxes yet.

Debate: Fictional Toys in Movies

00:02:26
Speaker
All right, let's jump into a quick round of this or that based on today's theme.
00:02:33
Speaker
All right, this or that. Best fictional toys from movies. Talkboy from Home Alone or Turbo Man from Jingle All the Way. Oh, gosh. I got to go with Talkboy. Didn't we have something similar to that growing up? We did. I think it was called the Yakback.
00:02:51
Speaker
That's right. Okay. That was fun. Yeah. I can't remember if it changed your voice or if you would just record something it would say it back. It probably did change your voice. I think Talkboy was very imaginative, and I think that's really cool that it was invented for the movie. Yeah. Very creative. Yeah.
00:03:07
Speaker
Okay. This or that. Classic toys. a yo-yo or a slinky? Okay. I remember being really into both of these at the same time, I think. um I don't know. It's fun to watch the Slinky go down the stairs and like which route it's going to take and whatever it's going to do. But with the yo-yo, you can just do more strategic, cool things with it. So I think I got to go with the yo-yo.
00:03:31
Speaker
I agree. I'm going to go with the yo-yo.

Classic Toy Face-off: Yo-yo vs Slinky

00:03:33
Speaker
I think I had a phase where I thought I could do all these cool cool tricks with the yo-yo. I couldn't, but it was still fun to pretend. tried. We probably accidentally hit people a lot with our yo-yos. I'm pretty sure I broke a lot in my day as well. That's funny. yeah I'm sure both of those are in the National Toy Hall of Fame.
00:03:53
Speaker
Yes, they got to be. All right, let's get into the trivia questions. All right, let's go.
