Welcome back to LHOHP! We're taking on another new movie this week, Late Night with the Devil. While it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, it still wasn't a bad movie. Also, I have an undrinkable beer from Southern Tier. Hope you enjoy! Cheers!

Did you ever see an animal skin? That's what I'm going to do to you now. Fare the skin from your body. Sorry.

No more room in hell. The dead will walk here. He was weak. He was weak. You know what the most frightening thing in the world is?

Upcoming Content and Studio Plans

00:01:14
Speaker
Cool things coming up this year, just to tell you about it. I did work on some cool drops, gonna try to do some more throughout the year, so I hope you guys enjoy that. Also, we're gonna be doing some like short video reviews, right? So I already write for a page on Facebook called Horror Reviews by The Collective. We are now also on Instagram,
00:01:33
Speaker
Be sure to check us out on Facebook. There's a lot of really good writers on there and they do some really great work. Find some really neat stuff to, again, that I've never heard of. I always think that I'm up to date on stuff and I'm not at all. But we're going to do some video reviews here. We're actually going to be doing for this podcast so you guys will see what I'm drinking. We're going to be working on the studio, quote unquote.
00:01:58
Speaker
here in the next couple weeks to try to get that off the ground. And yeah, you guys will actually see that I am indeed drinking beer.

Review of 'Late Night with the Devil'

00:02:04
Speaker
And I'm not just an idiot, stumbling over his words. Now, without further ado, we are doing Late Night with the Devil. Says 2023 on IMDB, but I mean, it just came out this year, I'm pretty sure. It just released on Shutter. That is always worth the subscription, at least for a couple months. There are a lot of great content on there.
00:02:27
Speaker
Yeah, but this is sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.2 out of 10 on IMDB, but...
00:02:35
Speaker
We gave it a 6.5 out of 10. We're going to talk a little bit why once we get to the spoiler section of the podcast in a couple minutes here. But first, let's talk about the beers we're drinking.

Beer Tasting: Sunny Little Thing and Orange Twist

00:02:46
Speaker
So we're kicking things off with Sunny Little Thing from Sierra Nevada. It's 5%. And it's sitting at 3.61 on untapped. So it's just a citrus wheat ale. We're doing some citrus beers today.
00:02:59
Speaker
No real reason. I just, you know, I bought this as a mixed pack and this other one that we're going to introduce here was a gift from a friend and I figured what the hell, let's put them together and make an episode out of it. Um, so this is such a sweet beer, man. Uh, these are very approachable beers. If you haven't had them, um, if you don't know what to get, you don't really like anything else on the menu, but you kind of want to try something different, you know, and you see a wheat beer, especially with anything like this, it's worth trying. So let's take a sip.
00:03:24
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's not gonna blow your socks off. Or it might, you know, if you never had anything like this before, maybe this is your fucking jam. I don't know. But I mean, it's just a solid beer, especially with the warmer weather right around the corner. Where I mean, we're almost in April, my goodness. Actually, I think when this drops, it will be April. So either way, next beer we're doing is Orange Twist from Southern Tier. It's 8.6% and 3.72% Ununtapped. It's an orange, I think they call it a strong ale, right? It just says Imperial Ale. But I think
00:03:54
Speaker
Um, I don't know, but it's kind of cool. So it's an orange twist. So you guys know that like ice cream, right? Yeah. This is an orange ale made with vanilla ice cream, uh, from some ice cream maker up in New York where these guys are actually from. Um,
00:04:07
Speaker
Yeah, looking forward to trying that one. That was a gift from a friend. Thank you, Chris. Really appreciate that. You guys are always welcome to donate beer to Little Hops a Horse. If you want me to drink it, I will absolutely do

In-depth Analysis of Movie Style and Execution

00:04:20
Speaker
that. And honestly, you guys like it and share it and subscribe it and whatever, rating all that little shit that every other podcast tells you to do.
00:04:29
Speaker
It helps, and it gets me one step closer to free beer, which is ultimately the goal here. All right, so late night with the devil. This was kind of making the rounds here over the past couple months, a lot of hype. I mean, it looks awesome if you guys have watched the trailer. It's a really unique movie, in my opinion. I thought they did a really good job at shooting it and trying to make it like a timepiece kind of thing, really period specific.
00:04:59
Speaker
And basically, it's a sort of found footage film surrounding Jack Delroy, who's a late night talk show host, who goes to some extreme measures to boost his failing ratings on his show, Night Owl. Yeah, I mean, that pretty much sums it up. So, you know, they bring on this girl who is possessed and they, you know, he tries to provoke whatever's in her.
00:05:24
Speaker
you know, see what happens. So what do we like about this? Well, ultimately, like I really enjoyed points. I'm going to give it points for originality. Hold on, I have to text my wife. You guys gotta give me a second. I know it's only five minutes in, but hold on one second. Okay, sorry about that. This is life as a podcaster and a parent. You know, we try, I try to do this when my wife is away. She works downtown like once a, you know, once a week or whatever, and she drops her kid off at like this, you know, our friend's house.
00:05:51
Speaker
So this is my day to record, right? And she's like, oh, I'm on my way and I thought I had extra time today because she said I had extra time. I guess, I guess I don't have that extra time. So we got to plow through this. All right. What do we like about it? Already said major points for originality here. Really liked it. Cause I mean, they really filmed this. Like it's like it's Johnny Carson type show from back in that, that era and actually do reference Carson a lot in that. But I love the concept of bringing a possession film into like late night talk show, live television. I think that's really cool. It's very funny.
00:06:21
Speaker
There's really nice blend of comedy sprinkled out through you know throughout the movie there's some pretty good examples of body horror but. What we didn't want me David. I can never remember that guy's last name David Dalmatian I think is how you say it you know hey feel free to correct me I'm not looking it up because I'm on a time crunch here.
00:06:43
Speaker
He does a great job. I think he's spectacular is Jack Delroy. I think he's very charismatic and funny. His delivery is really good and subtle. But what we didn't like about the movie is it's not what I thought I was getting. And maybe that's on me. I had a different expectation for the movie. And sometimes that's good. Sometimes it's bad when it pays off, you know, in a way. But this this was not exactly what I thought I was getting. The payoff wasn't good enough for me for what I wanted to get out of this movie. I was really genuinely hoping to be scared.
00:07:13
Speaker
And not to say this was a bad movie.
00:07:17
Speaker
It's just not what I was expecting. And everybody kept saying how great it was. I'm like, cool, so this is like a legit horror movie that is not gonna let me down. And lo and behold, another one falls victim to the hype train. But like I said, the ending is fucking weird. It is a weird, weird movie. Not enough happens in this movie. There's a lot of unnecessary filler. They focus a lot on the wrong stuff. I mean, for this being something that's supposed to be a horror movie, there's not a, I mean,
00:07:44
Speaker
yeah like there's like probably like a 20 minute half hour section maybe of like horror stuff everything else is just kind of filler and it's rather it's entertaining but it's not like it's an entertaining movie but it's not an entertaining horror movie there is there is a difference um yeah but i guess um you know that pretty much wraps it up for just like you know what we liked about what we didn't like about the beers we're drinking yada yada like i said we're on a time crunch so without further ado spoiler time
00:08:12
Speaker
Yes, I hope you guys liked that. See, I told you I was gonna get one. I told you I was gonna fucking get one. And I did it. And I worked that and I did that myself. Almost, kind of. There's actually a website you can buy sound effects and shit from. I did not know that. So that was like a dollar to get that. And obviously that's my voice if you guys didn't recognize it. So spoilers. So like I said, we're gonna be shaking things up this year a little differently on how we go about talking about the movie. It's not necessarily gonna be a scene by scene like it has been in the past. Some movies will be like that.
00:08:41
Speaker
I'm trying to break out of that mold, but there are a lot of things in the movie that I do want to cover But we're leading off with like spoiler alert here Was this all in his head? That's that's kind of what I was wondering because based on the ending with with him like, you know killing her But like unknowingly like it
00:09:03
Speaker
You saw how it ended, right? Like you saw like, you know, there was that weird sequence with the wife and she had the cancer. She's in bed and all this stuff, you know, and he's just like, he, she wants him to kill her and that's what he does. Uh, but then once it happens, uh, it like flashes back and he's in the studio again and little girls there and she's like that and everything. I don't understand the ending. I don't understand that last 15 minutes, but whatever. All right, let's, let's talk about the rest of the movie and then we'll come back to the ending.
00:09:32
Speaker
Um, but what I really liked about this movie is that people forget about what TV used to be, right? Like hell, even, even I was spoiled, uh, growing up in the late nineties and early two thousands that like, if you, if you didn't, if you couldn't be home to watch like your favorite show or an event or something like that, like we had a VCR at least, right? That you could program to start recording at a certain time on a certain channel. Uh, cause you would turn your TV off on that channel and record and everything.
00:09:58
Speaker
But once upon a time, if you missed it, that was it. You'd have to maybe read about it in the newspaper the next day or hear about it on the radio or something. But now we can watch whatever we want, whenever we want, mostly wherever we want.
00:10:13
Speaker
I kind of, you know, I don't know, I'm a romantic for that kind of thing. I do enjoy that. So the big events like you, I mean, the Super Bowl, right? You can't just, you have to be in front of a TV to watch that mainly because a lot of those aren't on certain streaming services. They have a deal still with like real TV networks, I guess. And, you know, so it's not, that's like the one thing that everybody kind of gathers around. So not to say that this is the Super Bowl by any means, but you know, um,
00:10:36
Speaker
A lot of things like that in the past, you definitely had to be in front of the TV to catch. But this place or this film takes place in the 70s and it was actually like a really crazy time in this country. Like you had Nixon's resignation from office and after Watergate and the Vietnam War was like coming to an end and then ended and then, you know, serial killers were running rampant. You know, most notably, you had like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, the Zodiac Killer, David Berkowitz and the Kool-Aid King.
00:11:05
Speaker
Jim Jones. Yeah, no, we fly high Jim Jones, but the guy was like the cool laden shit. So all right, but like I need water, not water, any beer. This beer is good, but I really want to taste this fucking orange twist one because it sounds really good, but doesn't have a great rating on untapped. So I wonder if it's going to be one of those like really subjective beers. It kind of looks like it's heading that way. All right. Almost done. Hold on.
00:11:30
Speaker
Here we go. I never fucking learned, man. I always pour myself like a full glass of beer and then I have to chug it. And I'm so excited to try the second or third beer. And I just leave myself, you know, not a lot of options there. So.
00:11:43
Speaker
What the fuck was this ending? No, we're not talking about that. We're not talking about that. Yeah, but I mean, I just, I really enjoyed the product that they put together here. Like I love that they put in some like really cool authentic commercials to start. They kind of really kind of set you, you know, what it was like back then, give you that sense of reality, you know, the same kind of, I mean, they nailed this concept, I think.
00:12:10
Speaker
You know with the opening monologue and the jokes and everything and they had you know Gus who's like who's Conan O'Brien sidekick that I can never remember that guy's name, but he's like the one that like I

Character Chemistry and Plot Exploration

00:12:21
Speaker
don't know I think he has his own talk show now, but
00:12:25
Speaker
You know, they all have them. They always like sit there and they make fun of them and or they'll like chime in with a witty comment or comeback or something. So they laid it out very nicely at the band. They have like the intermission music, which I really tried to find for this because I wanted to do it so I could use it a couple times. But the characters, you know, they have it set up the same way. They bring one out and they bring another one out. And then normally it goes right to like a band. But this one was like a special event. They had Chris do come out. He was that psychic. And
00:12:53
Speaker
I leaned into the whole idea for this movie. I really enjoyed it. I bought into it. What the fuck does this note say? Did it auto-correct? I'm trying to read what the hell I even wrote down here. What is this note? I don't even know. It's not even a sentence. The app that I use to write notes down while I'm
00:13:21
Speaker
watching a movie or whatever for this show will auto-correct. It'll just change like, no, no, no, that's not what you meant to say. Well, yes, the fuck it is, Google Docs. That's what I meant to say. Now, I don't even know what the hell I meant to say about it. Well, Chris too does really well as the psychic. I think he's a little obnoxious, but he's exactly what you would get on those talk show hosts where he's like kind of hit or miss. He's throwing out these really vague comments and readings and all this stuff, trying to play off that he's a psychic and everything.
00:13:47
Speaker
And he did a pretty good job, even when it comes down to them covering up for him and everything when he starts vomiting and all this stuff. The show, they would cut to commercials at the right time and everything. They put it together really well. And I can imagine that's probably what it was like for a long time. This is way back before the 10-second delay or whatever it is. This was real life.
00:14:11
Speaker
this is this was real TV this was you know cool but the characters are decent Christo was kind of you know a little not over the top but I mean he was a good psychic he was good for what he was this guy however this Carmel Carmichael hag that's his name he was the most annoying fucking character but he was also a really good character because he he
00:14:30
Speaker
backed most of the shit up that he was talking, if that makes any sense. He would call out people saying this and that. He actually talked shit on the warrants for a minute, which was pretty funny that they dropped. The hypnotizing scene later in the movie was really fucking cool, very reminiscent of the old-school body horror movies from the 80s. But he's an absolute fucking douchebag, and he did not get along. Him and Chris
00:14:54
Speaker
did not get along. He thought it was a gimmick the whole time and actually there was something obviously going wrong with Chris too and he dies by like shitting himself and vomiting to death, which sounds absolutely fucking brutal. But their banter was great for TV. And Jack does a great job as like a moderator, right? Kind of like letting them
00:15:12
Speaker
Let them go for a minute until things started going and then he would chime in with you know real in a man and saying like a funny joke to kind of cool everything down you know even having the cool head to calmly cut to commercial when things start kind of going. You know. Are you all or whatever let's try this beer and see what's going on here so i got that burp i got stuck up on me. Sorry oh my god. That's fucking gross.
00:15:40
Speaker
So what the fuck did they do to this? It smells like it's going to be wonderful. It smells like orange and vanilla. It smells delicious. It tastes like you're licking the floor. It tastes like
00:15:57
Speaker
It tastes like you brushed your teeth and then drank orange juice. That's what that tastes like. It's fucking terrible. I'm not drinking that. I can't drink that. That was so fucking bad. And my buddy said, I want you to try this and let me know what you think. Well, there it is, buddy. I think you had the same reaction. That's probably why I got it for just to see. Yeah, that was fucking terrible. Well, swing and a miss there, Southern Tierra. Normally, you guys are fucking lights out on your stuff, but that was not great. All right, back to this. I kind of watch this fucking taste out of my mouth.
00:16:26
Speaker
Oof, that was a rough one. All right. So Christu dies where he talked about that on the show. Um, and then move, they start talking about, you know, we're getting to like the main event here with like June and Lily coming on and everything. And they kind of give a little backstory with her. And it's the first church of a Braxis, uh, who's like a, like a, like a, like a mini demon, like a demon, uh, like henchmen, so to speak. Uh, and there's a beer called a Braxis, uh, perennial makes it and they're out in, uh, Illinois.
00:16:56
Speaker
in somewhere in the Midwest. I've had this beer. So I've had demon beer. And it's fucking delicious. I've had barrel age, I've had vanilla, I've had all this crazy shit. Yeah, but anyway, that's that's irrelevant. So apparently, you know, Lily was a part of this cult.
00:17:13
Speaker
She gets rescued by June. And I did actually like the part where Carmichael was accusing June of putting her in this hypnotic state so she could exploit her. Because like I said, he's a dickhead, but he backs

Critique of Movie's Climax and Ending

00:17:28
Speaker
his shit up. As you see with that hypnosis scene, that was fucking great. That was a nice curve ball I did not see coming. I really thought that when that did happen, that Lily had taken over because there's that slight
00:17:41
Speaker
slight minute of panic from Carmichael about, you know, fuck, like I lost control. This isn't working. And then obviously they all come back and, you know, everything's fine. But there's an audio clip whenever Lily's introduced and it's very reminiscent of the Annalise Michelle.
00:17:58
Speaker
Recordings if you guys are familiar we actually did cover a little bit of this on our exorcism of Emily Rose story back in September of twenty three. That's what that movie is based off of her life and we actually did find some some actual audio tapes of her exorcism we did put them on there.
00:18:18
Speaker
They're terrifying. They're fucking terrifying as is that movie. That movie is very fucking serious still to this day. But Lily Ingrid Torelli, I think is the girl. I don't want to fuck up her name, but I probably did. She's super awkward, but very polite. She does very good at that part. I could see her definitely coming around for a few more horror movies in the next couple of years. So maybe she'll be in like Scream 48 or whatever they end up doing. Did I hear correctly that what's her fate? Melissa Barrera is trying to come back for that.
00:18:45
Speaker
I mean, good for her if she does, but my goodness. I did like this part, I have a note. Jack asked Lily about the demonic possession and June like corrects him immediately and says, it's called a psychic infestation. And I did not know that there was political correctness in the fucking demon realm, but apparently there is. So against June's best interest and Lily's best interest, Jack provokes
00:19:12
Speaker
and pushes June into showing off some of Lily's ability. And this is where I thought things were going to really take off here.
00:19:24
Speaker
Glass starts shattering, things start, you know, there's there's like weird equipment malfunctioning and all this other stuff. Turns out it was just like feedback from like a speaker and a weird fucking what the hell was that instrument that he was playing that was fucking super weird. I don't know Carmichael unplugged it and shut everything off. But
00:19:44
Speaker
It was enough to get Mr. Wriggles. What a weird... See, I don't know. They couldn't have a different name. I don't know. It just felt very playful and fun and not scary at all. But he comes and makes an appearance and everything. Ah, fuck. I forgot to make that drop. I wanted to do this drop. That'll be in the next episode. They get to the point where they get Lily strapped down.
00:20:08
Speaker
The crew's a little nervous. They don't really want to go through with this. They find out about Kreeseu and everything. But, you know, Jack's all about it. The director's all about it. Like, let's center the ship. Let's get going. And it's showtime. Lily gets to show off her exorcism skills, not skilps. And it's the same old trope. It's the same old kind of voice for a possessed person. It's that like layered thing where it's the girl and then like the deep guy voice. And it's the same kind of injuries on the face.
00:20:35
Speaker
They overdo it a lot with her just like literally turning her neck. It makes her sound like she's cracking her fucking spine in half. But she's really just looking around the room. So I don't understand. I don't know, like I'm 36 and I don't even crack like that when I move around. I just thought they overdid that part a little bit. But I was like, whatever, let's fucking, let's go. Of course, things go haywire. June loses control. Lily levitates off the ground. Things start kind of getting a little crazy.
00:21:05
Speaker
June gets everything calmed down. She's able to reel it in not before jackets is raging fucking boner about like the potential for his show. And he's like, we should do this every week. We, you know, and June's like, no, no, no, I don't want to fucking do that. And Carmine goes like, Hey, I can't wait to call her on her bullshit.
00:21:24
Speaker
and called you a liar. And that's like the whole hypnosis part that we talked about earlier. But that's, you know, it, I'm still waiting for that, like it to take it to the next level at this point, right? I'm still waiting for it to like hit that, Oh my God, this is fucking scary. This is amazing. And it's just not, it's just not happening. So
00:21:46
Speaker
The body horror comes because Carmichael has to do his demonstration. And I thought this was kind of real. I wasn't sure what was happening. I did like this little misdirection here where Gus is ripping the fucking worms out of his stomach and all this other crazy shit, the stuff out of his neck and the big thing coming out of his head. None of that was real. And they go to do the playback and look and everything was literally fabricated. He hypnotized everybody, everybody at home and everybody in the studio and everything.
00:22:15
Speaker
I thought that was definitely really cool, but this is where the movie loses me, right? And Lily suggests that maybe we review my part, and that way I can show that I wasn't faking it.
00:22:29
Speaker
and that's exactly what they do, but that triggers Mr. Riggles to come out and play. Big power outage in the studio, surge is going on, Lily turns into a fucking X-Men, you know, she looked like Storm, her head splits in half and she looks like a fucking weird jack-o'-lantern or something. You know, all this stuff's happening, her head splits in half, she's glowing, it's just, it's weird. She snaps Gus's head all the way around, which, you know, I thought that was it.
00:22:56
Speaker
But I've really fucking hated Carmichael in this, because he's such a douchebag. June gets strangled by her necklace, and then inevitably her throat gets slit. Jack's shit whipped across the studio. But then Carmichael, we come to Carmichael. And he tries bribing her with the check, which the story behind the check you guys know, if anything can be, he can't prove that it's fake. He will absolutely pay $100,000 or something like that, or $500,000. And he doesn't know what the fuck to do with this.
00:23:26
Speaker
he pulls out the check and she cooks him from the inside out and yes of course that's ours
00:23:36
Speaker
And then, of course, the station cuts right to technical difficulties, which I thought was fucking hilarious, very fun music. And then this is the part we were talking about, the, you know, the sequence of all the scenes that they, when they're building Jack's story, you know, they're going from, you know, he did this and he had like a Jack Hanna segment, you know, with an animal and all this stuff. And they used to do these little bits and everything about a caveman. And he brought his wife on when she was dying and all that stuff. And they go through all this stuff and they relive all these scenes and Jack's super fucking confused.
00:24:05
Speaker
And, you know, in the end, I mean, he's standing there with a knife. He had just killed Lily, apparently. You don't really know, you just hear sirens. And, you know, there was, I don't

Final Thoughts and Episode Conclusion

00:24:21
Speaker
know, that was it. It was just a very weird ending. But again, not enough happened. They threw a lot of stuff out there that they never really tied up in the end.
00:24:29
Speaker
like what was up with they were talking about like how are the trees jack and he just like dismisses that and even june questions him on it and that that wasn't enough you know um he never follows up they never answer that uh it's just i don't know um just not a lot of closure a little bit messy on the end uh but it was beautifully shot it was really original um but just kind of left a little bit to be desired in the end um
00:24:55
Speaker
But like I said, it wasn't bad. It was like a good movie, but it wasn't a good horror movie. I was just a little bummed out about how it all ended. So yeah, that's gonna be it. So we're not really gonna run any further. I did see my wife pull up, so I gotta pull the plug on it. And yeah, so we'll see you guys next week. I did switch episodes. Don't get mad at me. Basket is next week. It was supposed to be this week, but I figured I'd get late night with The Devil Out while it's still somewhat relevant. So until next week, cheers.
