Today's reading will cover 2 Samuel Chapters 7, 9-10, 21:15-17 and 1  Chronicles Chapters 17 and 19. Today we will read about David keeping  his promises to Jonathan and Saul to be kind to their family, his  compassion for Saul's remaining family, his compassion for God's Ark,  his faith in God's promises to him, his compassion for the death of a  neighboring kingdom's king, and his desire for peace whenever possible.  Wow, that's a lot! In our discussion for personal application today we  will talk about using David's examples as ways to behave in our OWN  lives, remembering that God is compassionate, trustworthy, and knows the future He has planned for us, so we can put our trust in Him to not be anxious when we face difficult times.

King David's Story Chronologically

00:01:25
Speaker
We are reading about David, who is now King David, and we have a little bit of a long entry today. So let's see here. We are reading through 2 Samuel 9, 2 Samuel 7.
00:01:40
Speaker
I know that sounds out of order, but remember that this Bible is chronological, and things in the Bible are not always written down in a chronological format, and that's why we're reading the Day-by-Day Kids Bible, because it is a chronological Bible.
00:01:53
Speaker
So if you were going to check out today's reading in your Big Bible, you would want to potentially first read chapter 9 and then chapter 7.
00:02:04
Speaker
And then it also comes to us today from 1 Chronicles chapter 17, and then 2 Samuel 10, and 2 Samuel chapter 21, verses 15 through 17, 1 Chronicles 19. And that's a lot of chapters today, isn't it?
00:02:25
Speaker
So we have a lot to read through today.
00:02:30
Speaker
Our first section, it comes from chapter 9 of 2 Samuel, and it's entitled, Jonathan's Son. There was a man who had been a servant in Saul's family.
00:02:42
Speaker
David wanted to see him, so he came to the palace. Is anybody from Saul's family still alive? asked David. Is there someone I can be kind to because of Jonathan?
00:02:56
Speaker
There is Jonathan's son, the servant said, and he can't walk. Where is he now? asked David. And the servant told him. So David sent for Jonathan's son.
00:03:09
Speaker
His name was Mephibosheth. He came to see David, and he bowed down. Don't be scared, said David. I am going to be kind to you.
00:03:22
Speaker
Mephibosheth bowed down and said, I'm just like a dead dog. Why should you think about me? Your father, Jonathan, was my best friend.
00:03:35
Speaker
I will give you all the land that Saul, your grandfather, owned. will always let you eat at my table.
00:03:46
Speaker
David called Saul's servant. I have given Mephibosheth all the land that Saul owned, he said. You and your family will take care of that land.

David and Mephibosheth: Kindness and Legacy

00:03:57
Speaker
Gather the crops that grow. That way Mephibosheth can have enough to live on. He will eat at my table. So Mephibosheth ate at David's table, and he was like a part of David's family.
00:04:14
Speaker
Mephibosheth had a little boy. Saul's servant and his family helped them.
00:04:22
Speaker
Our next section is entitled, A Palace and a Tent. And it comes from 2 Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17.
00:04:32
Speaker
David was sitting in his palace. Nathan the prophet was there. David said, Look at this. I am living in a palace, but God's ark box is out there in a tent.
00:04:47
Speaker
Do whatever you're thinking, said Nathan. God is with you.
00:04:52
Speaker
That night, God spoke to Nathan. God said to tell David, Don't build a house for me to live in. One of your children will be king after you.
00:05:05
Speaker
He will build a worship house for me. I will never stop loving him. Your family and your kingdom will last forever.
00:05:18
Speaker
Nathan told David everything God had said. Then King David prayed to God. You have shown me these things, said David, so I've been brave enough to pray to you.
00:05:31
Speaker
Lord, you are God. There is no one like you. I can trust your words. You've promised good things to me.
00:05:42
Speaker
Now bring good things to my family, and then we'll be able to serve you forever. You have spoken. There will be good things for me forever.

Conflict with Ammon's King: Lessons of Peace and Forgiveness

00:05:55
Speaker
Our final section today is entitled, A Rude King. And it comes to us from 2 Samuel 10, 21, verses 15-17, and Chronicles nineteen and the army came to fight god's people again so david went out to fight with his men but he got very tired Now one of the enemy's men said he'd kill David.
00:06:25
Speaker
This man had a new sword. The sharp end of his spear weighed over seven pounds. But another man saved David, and he killed the man with the big spear.
00:06:37
Speaker
Then David's men made a promise to him. You will never go to fight with us again. You might get killed.
00:06:47
Speaker
Time passed, and the king of Ammon died. His son became king. David thought, I'll be kind to him. His father was always kind to me.
00:06:59
Speaker
So David sent a group of men to see the new king. And they david the they told him David was sorry that his father had died. But the leaders of Ammon talked to their king.
00:07:12
Speaker
Is David being kind by sending these men? They're here to check out our land. Soon King David will try to take our land for himself.
00:07:24
Speaker
So the king took David's men. He shaved off half of their beards. He cut their clothes in half across the middle.
00:07:37
Speaker
Then he sent them home. Now somebody told David what had happened. So David sent a message to the men. He told them, stay at Jericho until your beards grow back and then come home.
00:07:52
Speaker
The leaders of Ammon began to see what they had done. They had been rude to King David. So their king paid for chariots to come from other lands.
00:08:04
Speaker
And chariot drivers came too. Another enemy king came with his army and they all got ready to fight David's army. David heard about this army, so he sent Joab and his men out to fight against it.
00:08:19
Speaker
Now enemies were near the city, and enemies were in the country too. So Joab led his the best men out into the country to fight. The rest of his men went with his brother, and they went to fight Ammon in the city.
00:08:34
Speaker
If the enemy I fight is too strong, come save me, said Joab. If the enemy you the fight is too strong, then I'll come save you.
00:08:46
Speaker
Be strong, be brave. We'll fight for God's people and God will do what he thinks is best. So Joab began fighting and the enemy army in the country ran away from them.
00:09:01
Speaker
The army of Ammon saw them running away, so they ran away too. Now the army in the country called for more men to help them. David found out about it, so he sent his army out to fight with them.
00:09:15
Speaker
But the army ran away again.
00:09:18
Speaker
Then the people from that land made peace with David, and they didn't help the army of Ammon anymore.
00:09:27
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:31
Speaker
So we saw a lot happen today.
00:09:35
Speaker
I'm going to work a little bit backwards and talk about the fighting that we saw first.
00:09:43
Speaker
And we will see that David had a nature of peace. When the king died in the other country, he tried to be peaceful and say, I'm sorry that your father died.
00:09:56
Speaker
And the leaders in that country spoke poorly of David, claiming that his motives were to be bad, that he was going to try to take over their land. So when we read that he cut half of their beards off and cut their clothes in half, this was a symbol of disgrace. And this is why David instructed the men to stay in Jericho until their beards came back because they were essentially embarrassed to come back with their beards half cut off.
00:10:24
Speaker
A beard, you may have noticed even in today's society that a man growing a beard has become a very significant thing. And it always kind of has been.
00:10:36
Speaker
It's ah something that doesn't happen right away. You have to be old enough for your beard to grow. And so they take a lot of ah care and it shows ah maturity and it has other symbolism to it as well.
00:10:51
Speaker
But it was very disgraceful for the men to have had their beards cut off and then half of their clothes cut. And so that's why they did it. It's because they knew it would be ah disgraceful to the men.
00:11:06
Speaker
And so David was granting, was giving them compassion by saying, don't don't come back. You don't have to show yourselves. Wait until your beards grow back. And we're going to see and talk about compassion in the first and second parts of our story today as well.
00:11:22
Speaker
And that will be our daily application today is compassion.
00:11:28
Speaker
We will see again, at the we saw again at the end today that David made peace with the people from the land that had helped Ammon in their fighting and that they never again fought against David.
00:11:42
Speaker
So we also see forgiveness. and in that making of peace. And so that's also very important. And we've seen that with David, that David has a heart of forgiveness and a heart of compassion and a heart for peace.
00:11:57
Speaker
And these are qualities that God loves. And that is ah why David is said to have a heart for God.
00:12:06
Speaker
it He always was looking to exhibit these things. So let's go back to the beginning of our story where we had Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth. That was quite a name. It took me a number of times of saying and seeing that for me to be able to say that correctly before recorded as I was reading ah this entry today.
00:12:28
Speaker
Mephibosheth. I hope I'm saying it right. It looks good to me.
00:12:35
Speaker
And we see that David intentionally sought out ways to be compassionate. He said, is there anybody left in Saul's family that I can be kind to?
00:12:46
Speaker
And there was, there was Jonathan's son. And he had Jonathan's son taken care of for the rest of his life. So we see also that David keeps his promises.
00:12:57
Speaker
even after the person he made the promise to is no longer alive. He promised to always be kind to Saul's family. He made that promise both to Jonathan and he made that promise to Saul.
00:13:10
Speaker
And although Saul did not keep his end of the promise, we see that David it is still keeping his part. And so that is also part of our daily application, is to be true to our word, that if we make a promise and we say we will do something, that we do it.
00:13:30
Speaker
That's part of honesty.
00:13:33
Speaker
And then we also see David's compassion, where he was thinking about God and the fact that the Ark box was outside in a tent, but he was living in a glorious palace.

God's Promise to David: Faith and Trust

00:13:46
Speaker
And God said, don't build me a house. That job will be for your son, one of your sons. It says, one of your children will be king after you, and he will build a worship house for me, and I will never stop loving him.
00:14:05
Speaker
Your family and your kingdom will last forever.
00:14:10
Speaker
Do you know that Jesus came from David's family line? Aside from God, he came from this the family of David. He is just as descended from date from David's family.
00:14:22
Speaker
So we are told clear back right here, God is establishing that somebody from David's line will rule for forever. And he does.
00:14:33
Speaker
Jesus is our king. and he is on the throne forever and ever. Isn't that wonderful that God knows the the future so far ahead?
00:14:44
Speaker
He knows everything. And just like David said, and which is another one of our applications, David had faith. He believed that what God said was true, and he knew that he could trust in that.
00:14:57
Speaker
And so he was taking a lot of joy in the promise that God made him.
00:15:05
Speaker
David said, you've shown me these things. You are God. There is no one like you. I can trust your words.
00:15:17
Speaker
You have promised good things to me. Now bring good things to my family and then we'll be able to serve you forever. You have spoken. There will be good things for me forever.
00:15:30
Speaker
And in the same way that we know that David trusted in God and his word is true, the same way we can trust in God too, to know that he takes care of us and he loves us.
00:15:42
Speaker
And he doesn't change his mind when he makes these promises. And we will see more of these promises when we read ah in the New Testament with Jesus. And so we have a lot of daily application today.
00:15:56
Speaker
We have faith in God to trust him. yeah So when things look tough, remember that God's promises are true and they will always be there and he will do what he says.
00:16:07
Speaker
You can trust in him. That is what faith means. When you have faith, you have trust. And that is what makes God happy is for us to trust in Him. And so we've talked in the past, if you are new here, then you may have not heard, that as we go through difficult times, God is using every single thing in our life to help our faith get stronger and stronger.
00:16:29
Speaker
So He takes us through difficult times to give us opportunities to trust in Him. And as we learn to trust in him, we are supposed to look back and remember those things that God has done for us and then bring those into the current situation and say, ah just as God was there for me when something else happened, he will be with me now and I don't need to worry.
00:16:55
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that who can add a day of life, a day to his life by worrying? God knows the things we need, Jesus tells us.
00:17:06
Speaker
And we just need to follow him. And then everything else God will take care of. Seek first the kingdom of heaven and the rest of everything will be given to you.
00:17:17
Speaker
And that is a pretty steep promise if you think about it. That's all you have to worry about is God. And then God takes care of the rest. And Jesus tells us that if you have burdens, cast them on him because his yoke is light and his burdens are easy.
00:17:35
Speaker
We just need to trust in him and he takes care of what we need. That doesn't mean we get to sit back and watch TV all day. But it means that when we go through things, we can have faith to know that God will take care of everything.
00:17:49
Speaker
Everything will work out the way it should. Even though it looks bad, God works good into absolutely everything. So if you've been hanging around a while, you've heard this message before.
00:18:01
Speaker
But if you are new, you may not have heard us in that daily application. That God uses absolutely everything for good. He teaches us to have faith in Him, and He has things in mind for us.
00:18:14
Speaker
And we just have to trust that what He is taking us through is for the best.

Emulating David's Virtues: Compassion and Promise-Keeping

00:18:21
Speaker
Well, that is our reading for today. i hope you are encouraged and that your faith has grown in God, and that you are encouraged to have faith in God today with whatever your challenges that you may come across.
00:18:34
Speaker
And i hope that we have occasion to show compassion Notice how David showed compassion today for Jonathan's son. and if we have opportunity to show compassion today, let's remember to be like David and to show compassion for others.
00:18:50
Speaker
If we have occasion to make a promise to someone, let's remember that David kept that promise the same way that God keeps his promises. And let's keep our promises to people as well.
00:19:03
Speaker
And if you feel that these things have helped light your light today, then please click the light button at the end of your video or podcast and maybe click that follow or subscribe button so that we can light up this event and bring attention to it so that other people will be able to be able to take notice of it.
00:19:22
Speaker
When we do that, it helps those algorithms to bring it around to more people who may be interested in this event. And together we can help spread the word about reading God's word so that other people can be just as encouraged as you felt today.
00:19:39
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me and I hope everybody has a great rest of your Friday. I will be here again for everybody tomorrow.
