Introduction & Episode Setup

Speaker
sports podcast network Hello everybody and welcome to the Daily Chelsea podcast. Obviously a very special edition as it is crossover Thursday. ah Chelsea hosts Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge this weekend therefore we are joined by the Daily Palace team as well. um I'd like to introduce Joe.
00:00:29
Speaker
nice to Nice to be here. I've been ah giving myself a headache over the last day trying to figure out ah a way I can argue that beating Norwich, 4-0 in the League Cup, means Palace are ready to push for European football. But yeah, well, we're good. Excited to be here. Yeah, well, I could see it. I could see that as well. I'll discuss that a little bit more and as we get a bit further in.

Fan Perspectives: Crystal Palace vs. Chelsea

00:00:56
Speaker
I'd also like to introduce Alex as well. How are you doing?
00:00:59
Speaker
Yeah, well, good. Thanks, mate. um Yeah, I'm not as optimistic as Joe, unfortunately. um You know, I'm a through-and-through Palace fan, and, yeah, I just ah don't have high hopes that we'll make it to Europe. Probably 10th again this season, but, yeah, we'll see.
00:01:17
Speaker
10th, fair enough. I mean, it's this's not the worst place to be. Chelsea fans have ah felt that really, really still in the last minute. Speaking of, I have with me, my daily Chelsea co-host as well. Matt, how are you doing? Yeah, really well, guys. Great to be here. And looking ahead to the weekend, I'm quietly confident
00:01:39
Speaker
and hear a Chelsea fan say that very often. do growing up and So yes, Chelsea hosts Crystal Palace this weekend. and The game is being played on a Sunday as it was moved as Chelsea play in the Europa conference league qualifiers.

Chelsea's European Challenges & Palace's Start

00:01:57
Speaker
They played last Wednesday they and playing again uh tonight um therefore that yeah the picture is on a sunday um i suppose we'll we'll start to ask you guys a a couple of questions i guess um what from you your point of view how is the start to the season binned palace i think it's due defeats isn't it
00:02:17
Speaker
um But it'd be interesting to hear how you thought you had played in those games should you've had a better result from those games? um And I suppose um one of the major ones is obviously no Lisa anymore. um So ah how have you been dealing with that and how has your manager started in the new season? ah Joe, maybe we'll start with you. Yeah, I think It's ah yeah obviously important for your Chelsea listeners for us to try and give an account of Glassness Palace. I appreciate they all have match of the day, but of course, you've not um played Palace since the late Royal Hodgson days or the last days of Wome, as I like to refer to them. um It's been obviously not a great start to the season, but I think
00:03:08
Speaker
probably not as bad as two defeats on the spin to Brentford and West Ham. Sounds on paper. the In a way, what's positive for Palace is all the goals they've conceded um across both games.
00:03:29
Speaker
have been, I think, pretty avoidable and are things that should be ironed out once the squads back up to speed. All of Gehi, Henderson, Munoz, Wharton, Mateta, and Eze, integral parts of the first team that had really long summers going deep into international competitions. And it just looks a bit like, you know, when you've got a group of people that you have a really nice dynamic with and then you don't see them for, I don't know, like six months a year and you just have to figure each other out again and
00:04:12
Speaker
They're all sort of pressing a little bit out of sync. And it creates these gaps between them. They're not quite on the same wavelength. The other teams can exploit. And even having one just the other day fawn ill against Norwich in the cup, even they exploited it. um They played for a couple of times and got running at Palace at pace. And it caused problems. Again, these these are things I think will be ironed out before long.
00:04:40
Speaker
um whether they're ironed out in time for Chelsea game or not, I'm not sure.
00:04:48
Speaker
And yeah, I mean, that's that's i mean that's quite that's quite interesting to hear. um I thought obviously, yeah, the last time we saw of Palace was probably at the end of last season where obviously youre you're playing really well, playing some really good football. um I think getting results against teams like Liverpool as well. um Alex, what have you thought of the the opening couple of games with Palace?

Analyzing Tactical Issues & Match Expectations

00:05:09
Speaker
Yeah, similar to Joe in that we've we've looked a bit disjointed at times. um But i don't I don't think two defeats from two against Brentford and West Ham really tells it the true story of how we've played in those games. You know, it's it's fine margins like these sort of what I would call mid-table clashes because we all are West Ham fans will probably argue different with me. but We are mid-table clubs, let's put it that way. um Yeah, these games are very tense and very scrappy, and they are fine margins. Looking at the Brentford game, we had a free kick this allowed, because Will Hughes did something stupid in the penalty box, um and as his goal was ruled out, um we hit the the post and the bar against West Ham. you know On another day, they go in, and it's 2-0 to us, rather than West Ham. I've been saying this all week, though. the
00:06:02
Speaker
the kind of margins are told by our our poor defence at the moment. um ah Yeah, like Joe said, Norwich cut for us a couple of times in midweek. um The goals against West Ham are avoidable. We got caught out a couple of times just not clearing our lines properly. um But yeah, I think To be honest, I don't think we'll we we'll get a positive result at Chelsea. And going into the international break, it's like, oh, yeah, perhaps free defeats from free ah looks bad. But considering we have Glaznar, and he is positive, um he played a full strength team at Norwich against Norwich, which was a sign of maybe getting the players up to fitness. And like Joe said, ironing out those mistakes in competitive football rather than behind closed doors.
00:06:49
Speaker
So I think there are these little improvements that I think we'll see. um But away at Chelsea is probably not not where we'll see them like it at their best almost. um So I think, yeah, after the international break, we'll probably see more of like what we saw of Palace at the end of last season. um I think the fans are patient with that, you know, we're not Glazen is probably the best manager we've had for for years. you know He's better than Pulis, better than Hodgson. um He's just more modern and more progressive. And I think the fans will have patience with that and you know not judge

Chelsea's Recent Performance & Transfer Talk

00:07:24
Speaker
him too harshly on these ah two losses so far.
00:07:29
Speaker
So Alex, less confident of a result at the weekend. um Matt, without giving a score prediction as well well, we'll do those closer to the end. What do you think of Palace visiting Chelsea on the weekend? Should we should Chelsea be worried um or do you think we should be sort of heading into the game confident that we can get a result, ah considering Joe's and Alex's point of view there as well? Yeah, well, you know, if the Palace team have got Joe and Alex's mentality, then I think it's it's ours for the taking, you know, very, very cautious mentality. Good thing I'm not giving a halftime team talk. Exactly. yeah
00:08:06
Speaker
um Guys, if you lose, it's fine. you know so If they're saying that to the team, right.
00:08:13
Speaker
Absolutely. I mean, obviously we've come off a 6-2 win against Wolves last week, and we're going to be on the up. As in, Chelsea fans haven't been able to celebrate six goals in, it seems like, forever. um The last two years have been a proper slog for us. So we're really getting excited, and we definitely have seemed to be making signings that have really elevated our first team as well. So we've definitely got to be confident going into the result, being at home, that we can at least get a win. We're going to score predictions, but at the same time, there is no easy game in the Premier League. And Crystal Palace, you know, they've, they've like, like Joanna X have mentioned that they've got some really great players. They've just there. They've made some sloppy mistakes and
00:09:04
Speaker
They could turn up. Eze is one of those players that can change a game on his head. And so if we do give him a chance or a couple of chances, we could um you know really be hurt by him. um I think he's really key for Pallas to keep him fit, to keep feeding him the ball. But I do think the the loss of Elise is huge for Pallas. And they haven't really been able to to replace him.
00:09:33
Speaker
And I do think that's really key for them um if they can get anything before transfer deadline day. And if not, I really think they need to look at that in January.
00:09:43
Speaker
Yeah, and that's that's quite a good point actually. I um i suppose Alex, Joe, with obviously the couple of losses that you that you've had already in your squad and what may come, we don't know if um Mark is off to Newcastle or we don't really know if that's happening just yet. um do Do you think you still need new additions to your squad um in terms of the upcoming season?
00:10:08
Speaker
um Do you have anyone missing Major League against us on Sunday that's going to affect your you against us as well?
00:10:18
Speaker
well yeah i mean ja yeah I think um definitely the squad needs strength thing. On the Elisa topic, I mean, I certainly agree with Matt, it's a problem to lose a player of Elisa's quality. Perhaps Chelsea and Palace United in being teams that are disappointed that Elisa is not currently playing for them. But and I just don't think it's possible, really, fair. I think that's a position the club's taken is you can't just, with their budget, you can't just find a player of Elisa's quality
00:10:55
Speaker
So i my priority for Palace Point of View is more, it's getting another centre back over the line because you could still lose Gehi regardless. They need another one, I think. It looks like the deal for Maxson's liqueur from Wolfsburg is progressing nicely and he will be very welcome edition, more experience than Richard and Riyadh who played last weekend and has this brilliant pace that should help in the same way that Kyle Walker does for City, ah should help Palace play really high up the pitch in the way that Oliver Glastner and I suppose most managers now
00:11:45
Speaker
want to do. We've been speaking a lot about wanting another left back as well because Tariq Mitchell is a great player but looked a bit leggy at the end of the game with West Ham and that caused some of the problems that he wasn't able to track when Bissaka making overlapping runs.
00:12:07
Speaker
that really led to their goal for suit. Sorry, the second one for Bowen, rather, because Bowen could completely pin Chadi Riyadh because there was this overlapping run from Wambasaka, which meant he was two-on-one and he could just maneuver him wherever he wanted and create the angle for his shot. So I think, basically, it's a roundabout, a long way of saying defensive reinforcements, probably the priority for Palace before the window shuts.
00:12:45
Speaker
Interesting, okay. Well, um Alex, we'll get your view on that as well, um as well as me and Matt will discuss hopefully what transfers that Chelsea have already got that could affect the game this Sunday. and We'll come back and speak about that after this quick break. And we're back. ah It's the Daily Chelsea and Daily Palace crossover episode. um We were just ah discussing transfers and who Joe would like to see possibly, or what positions Joe would like to see improve the Palace. um Alex, besides what Joe said, is there any sort of particular position, you want to desperately see improved our and is there a specific player out there that Palace are looking at that you would really want to see you know coming into the club? Yeah, so obviously we've we've mentioned Elise, but I don't think he's he's replaceable. um
00:14:16
Speaker
he's him and Eze just do things with a football that other players can't. um And doing a like for like replacement, I think is, yeah, it's near impossible um with the players that Palace can attract. um we're We're close to getting Anketi over the line at the moment, um which I think would be a really good deal. ah We're looking at 25 million for him. I just think it it doesn't, obviously it's a very different kind of player profile to Elise,
00:14:45
Speaker
but he gives us attacking reinforcement to back up Mateta um to offer you know perhaps a bit of width if we choose to play him there perhaps a withdrawn striker role um but you can also run him behind so he's a good option to have in attack to if we need to mix things up a little bit um whether he'll be ready and we'll get him over the line in and preparation for Sunday's game, I'm not sure. um But it feels like if we did, he'd give us a bit of a lift, um you know, and and he'd want to prove something as well. ah So that would be a good addition if we can get him. um
00:15:24
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I'm quite happy with our with our midfield. You know, you've got Adam Wharton, Dokore, Loma, like all experienced players or, you know, Wharton's got great potential as well. But yeah, those defensive areas I am worried about, especially if we lose Gehi this late, we're, yeah, we're a bit troubled there.
00:15:44
Speaker
Yeah, and obviously we're we're recording this on a Thursday, but ah by the time we play each other, the transfer window will have finished. So um any incoming and upcoming will have been confirmed.
00:15:57
Speaker
um Matt, from the current batch of transfers we've got already in our squad, who are you looking forward to possibly seeing get a start this Sunday? Maybe Felix or Neto. um Who do you think can really influence this game for us? Yeah, absolutely. Those two for sure. Neto and Felix have been absolute standout signings for us.
00:16:18
Speaker
ah this summer. And I'm pretty sure Felix will start concerning he's not playing in Europe this week. um So we could probably likely see him either start in the middle or on the left, I think. And again, with Enzo's formations, I almost feel like it might be a similar thing that we've seen with Pep in previous seasons where it's almost a fantasy player's nightmare. You're not really sure what the front four are going to be.
00:16:45
Speaker
um just because we're balancing Europe and everything. But yeah, Felix and Neto, they've got that Portuguese connection. They're both individually brilliant and they've both got a great turn on them, a great pass, a great shot. So I think those are two players to really watch out for this Sunday. um Obviously, we can mention Palmer. He's our best player at the moment. He's the first name on the sheet and he can hurt teams anywhere, whether he's deep in midfield, he can play a great ball over the top.
00:17:13
Speaker
um or he can just get stuck in involved and whether it's a shot or whether it's a header, Palmer can basically do anything at the moment and that's thrilling for Chelsea fans and terrifying for Palace fans or anyone else that we're playing at the moment. um So I think that's really where we can get excited about.
00:17:32
Speaker
Obviously, Chelsea, have we have our own defensive worries at the moment. I do think if we get picked off int in the centre-mode field, maybe Quesado or Enzo, if they get the ball nibbled off them, teams can generally break on us quite quickly. And that's generally where we can see a lot of goals conceded. So I think if Palace really focus on pressing with Eze, Mateta and whoever else,
00:18:00
Speaker
lines up in attack, then they really could cause problems for us. I was going to ask as well, just back to the gay, he transferred all the news around that, you know, if you, if to maybe just come to Alex first, like with, if you do get 70 million for gay, he, I personally think you need to jump at that because that's amazing money. Um, and I understand gay, he's a really crucial player for you. And, and Jay, you've mentioned the defensive,
00:18:27
Speaker
concerns but surely you can use that 70 mil to get maybe another centre back and a great winger for 35 million each or actually just put a shed load more into a winger to try and replace a loose A.
00:18:45
Speaker
Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. It's life-changing money for a team like us. That plus the 50-odd million we got for Gehi. Sorry for Lisa. If you add that together, that's sort of our budget for the next few transfer windows, at least. um And then we get all these little sales from like Academy players and stuff like that that we do as well. um So it would it would sort us out financially. But I think Parrish's stance on it It was very much like he's he got in the team of the Euros for some publications, not all of them. But he was like one of the standout players, especially for England. And we got to the final. And it's like, that is the pinnacle of football for some people. So I can see why he wants to hold out for that much money. um They've obviously valued him with a certain criteria. And that is based on his international
00:19:40
Speaker
um ah rise, I suppose, over the summer. He wasn't even first choice, but it was just McGuire got injured and he he got thrust into it, which I think is even more testament to how good he is. um So yeah, I think 70 million is kind of fair. And I think looking at Newcastle's finances, um I don't think they're going to struggle to drum that up. So I think it's sort of playing the field a little bit. um But to be honest, I'd i'd be guided if if yeah he left and before the transfer window this late, no matter what the money. So
00:20:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's ah it's a balance, isn't it, I suppose. that's that's That's quite interesting because obviously, I mean, I think the other reason, Matt, that we want ah Palace to accept a fee is because I think we get 20% of it, is it?
00:20:31
Speaker
That's 70 million all of a sudden. Just keep looking for it.
00:20:40
Speaker
He's obviously a great player for you and to be honest, I'd rather we hadn't sold him in the first place. I think he probably could have broken through to our first team. um but um i So I understand that you guys probably had a couple of questions maybe about the Chelsea team as well. Is there anything specifically you want to know about Chelsea's vulnerabilities or what maybe to expect from us? Because I think that um after watching you know the new style during preseason and the last couple of games, Chelsea fans are starting to know what to expect from us now, not fully, but a bit more of but of what to expect.
00:21:15
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, you've touched on it there and um ah Matt's touched on it a bit of the line-up before, but I thought trying to understand what Chelsea are at this point in time, trying to prepare for this podcast is like cramming for an A-level. So there's so many possible permutations, players. So basically, who are maybe excluding the obvious Cole Palmer, the kind of big danger men that um you think Palace should be.
00:21:52
Speaker
looking out for this weekend. Maybe starting with you, Jake, as we know Matt's pro the Portuguese boys. Yeah, ah yeah I think it's it's going to be interesting because we we're still waiting for a couple of our new signings to to make their first proper start as well. And as as Matt mentioned, um no Felix for our European game tonight. So I would like to I expect him to start on Sunday. I think he's going to be very dangerous as well. um Very good finisher, very good with his movement. um and Not that I assume that you play the same sort of way, but usually the way we've we we do well against you guys is by having really good movement, really good build up on our way into the box and having a good finisher.
00:22:37
Speaker
um which I think is probably why we struggled the last couple of times because we haven't really had a good finisher in our team, really. um And the other one I would probably say, which I expect him to start as well, is is Jackson. um he's Although his finishing, like we just spoke about, isn't as is not the best.
00:22:54
Speaker
He can really cause some trouble in terms of, you know, pushing up against your defenders, you know, keeping hold of the ball and giving it possibly to one of those um more, one of the wider, more creative players for us. Matt Awake as well, you know, came off a hat trick last week. um He was basically finishing anything. He got he got got his feet on inside the box. So um those are definitely a couple of danger men I would say to worry about. Matt, what would you say?
00:23:22
Speaker
Yeah, I think Colwill is actually one of them as well. um I think our defensive side doesn't get talked about as much, which is fair enough because we've made more attacking signings at the moment. But Colwill, you know, he's a lively fella. And if he wants to roll up Mateta, he's going to do it. um And so in some ways, I think your players need to be able to keep their heads um when they're they're coming up against him.
00:23:49
Speaker
I mean, so does Coldwell as well, so he didn't get booked or sent off or anything like that. But he's definitely got a lot of passion and I think he'll drive the defense really well. I don't know another player. I don't know if he'll start, but one of our recent signings as well, this summer, a Renato Viega. I think he's been brilliant in the two games that he's played or three games that he's played so far.
00:24:10
Speaker
in the sense that he's great at the inverted role that Enzo loves to play. And he's six foot three, so he adds a lot of height in the middle of the park and will be a real handful in terms of breaking up play. And he's really comfortable on the ball as well. So I think he'll be a bit of a nuisance. I'm not sure he'll start, but I'm pretty sure that he'll come on during the game. And I do actually think he'll be a bit of a difference maker when he gets on the pitch.
00:24:36
Speaker
and i said i'm just I'm disappointed to hear that you reckon Colwell will war thrive in a scrap with Mateta. I'll jump for the and show. you know I mean, he's a massive lad, John Mateta. He's going to say he will ex Brighton as well, so it's a bit of spice there. Could be coming on Sunday. I was going to say Mateta showed over the summer at the Olympics that he's ah the the biggest threat to med under the age of 23 since Rishi Sunak's national service proposition. He's absolutely bullying young centre backs all summer and I thought kind of fancy them against Colwell and Fafana in that regard but I suppose both of them are not your average under 23 centre back are they? They kind of got a lot of of prem experience. If they're not an area of vulnerability
00:25:33
Speaker
What do you think maybe is anything you could see Palace being well set up to exploit against Chelsea? Matt, do you want to go first?

Strategies & Score Predictions

00:25:44
Speaker
Yeah, sure. As in I kind of touched on it earlier, just in terms of with Kysetto and Enzo, if you guys really hassle them um because Enzo loves to push his wingers up so high. And when we do have the ball, a lot of the players can be quite far up the pitch attacking wise that if you do nick the ball of us in the center, that can leave us a bit short in defense. And so if I was Palace, that would really be the game plan for me.
00:26:10
Speaker
to to really try and focus on that and time the pressing really really well in sentiment field but also you know from both your games against Brentford and West Ham you guys love to bomb down the wing and really use your pace really well and so again if you combine that well with with the pressing. You could really stretch our defense and cut catch us off guard. So I think we really need to be to be wary of that. I would almost argue about man-marking Eze just because he is such a crucial player for you guys. Everything goes through him. you know if i think If he gets ever gets injured or gets suspended during the season, you ah you're going to feel it so, so much. um you know He's one of those players that
00:26:56
Speaker
is arguably, you know, worth 70 million to you guys as well. A bit like Zaha was when you held out for 80 million for him years and years ago. So I think that's, ah yeah, into those are the the key points for us at the moment that Endo really needs to drill into our team. ah But then again, it is up for you guys to really be up for the game.
00:27:19
Speaker
Yeah, I think I'd agree with you, Matt. I think um if Palace are able to counter-attack us, I think that's where you're going to find the most joy. But I think it will be a lot of joy if you if you do it right. um we As Matt was saying, we get quite a few players forward now. like our our Our fallbacks are always quite far down.
00:27:38
Speaker
um you know, we we operate with with an inverted player as well. So if you're able to you know overload us in the midfield before you counter us as well, then then you have a way in to to score goals against us, basically. And I think, you know, the football you play, you you can most likely do that. The other thing I think is Eze is going to have a lot of time and space just called because of the way we play at the moment. like And that's obviously where he's most dangerous and I would really, if Palace ah
00:28:09
Speaker
oh not but I really want to say if I think you will score against us, I think Eze will be definitely be involved in that goal. Speaking of, we will do some official score predictions quickly after we come back from this break.
00:28:26

And we're back. So yes, Chelsea do host the Crystal Palace at Stanford Bridge, Sunday 1.30. And it is time for us to give our official score predictions. um It's always nice to let the guests go first. So I'll throw it over to Alex. So i just thought just I just read the name list and just put one. um Alex, what do you think the score prediction will be for Chelsea versus Crystal Palace on Sunday?
00:29:38
Speaker
ah So I'm sticking with my pessimism here, and I'm going to go 2-1, Chelsea. I think it'll be a close match. um But yeah, I can just see you guys edging it. You know, we've we've got a few issues that we've spoken about that I just think you guys will will have too much quality. And yeah, especially Cole Palmer, like you guys had mentioned, the guy is just, yeah, he's unplayable on his day. So yeah, 2-1 to you guys, unfortunately. Sorry, Palace fans. And Joe, what do you think?
00:30:09
Speaker
I'm going to go ah an optimistic 2-2. Admittedly in the knowledge that I think Palace have lost every game to Chelsea since 2017, I was saying earlier, but it could be the way you can stop it. I base in both teams have... The game feels like to be quite frenetic to me. Both teams have obvious defensive frailties.
00:30:36

of his attacking quality. And I think it'd be high scoring and and could end up being quite even. So I've gone with 2-2. Fair enough. And Matt, what are you thinking for Chelsea Palace? Yeah, so I think it's going to be 3-1 Chelsea. I do think someone like Eze or Mateta will be able to get a goal in um during the game.

I think there'll be a bit of a lapse of concentration from Chelsea where Palace will capitalise, but I do think we've got enough talents and the team are gelling enough under Enzo's new style in order to to make enough chances to to get three goals. So, yeah, I do think 3-1. That is the same result as one of the results last season when we got a great 3-1 win at Sales Park and that's definitely one of my favourite results ever because Last season was tough until right the end. And that game in fit in particular was very, very close until Gallagher and Enzo got two late, late goals for us, um which it was, um yeah, brilliant, brilliant to see. I do also think that a lot of the game will be actually be quite cagey from memory. Most of the Chelsea Palace games can actually be quite tense,

and and and a really good battle. So I think Palace will bring a great threat and they'll definitely be up for it. I'm sure their supporters will be in and loud voice for them at the bridge. um But yeah, still back on the shelves to win 3-1.

Fair. I think i've I've got a bit of a mix of all the results that we've that we've already said. I think it'll be 3-2 to Chelsea. um Just because I think we're a bit leaky at the moment, and like I said, if you get a couple of counter attacks, I think you'll probably score. And I can see that happening you know very well for you twice in the game at least. um The other thing I think is a bit of a disadvantage for us that what thought I don't think I mentioned before as well, was that Our fans are very angry right now when it comes to Stanford Bridge. Like there were some boos in the city game um just for sort that long, so you know, long build up play and stuff like that. um And Palace always travel really, really well, especially to Stanford Bridge. You always take up like a large bit of allocation and your fans are always very loud.

And I could see the atmosphere turning quite sour for us if we're not playing that well. um But in the end, I do think we'll have probably the quality just to finish off the game with a 3-2 win. um

And it's definitely, I think, like Matt said, I think it will definitely be a bit of a cage game as well.

um So, is there anything else that, ah Joe and Alex, you would like to ask us as Chelsea fans, anything you would like to know about the team before Sunday that you'd like to scout out before watching on the weekend? I think I'm good, guys. I think yeah your score predictions of have killed me off there, to be fair. I know. Actually, 3-1. Yeah, I know.
00:33:50
Speaker
um Well, you know, after 6-2 last week, we can we can dream, you know. Just half both the scores. Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In fact, it'd be very realistic for us to have a humbling result to really bring us back down after that good result last week. Very true. Like, that's that's equally as likely as us continuing on momentum. so You know, you might be in luck if it's 60 Palace. So, yeah, I'll join you every week. Yeah. Well,
