Introduction to Daily Palace Podcast

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge. I'll your host today. With me is Dan Tanner. How are you doing, Dan?
00:00:20
Dan Tanner
I'm doing alright. It's the end of a long week. So a lot of very poor results for the palace. It's been a long week. So yeah, but's sir can let's go start talking about it. and We can all sort of heal together.
00:00:37
Dan Tanner
We can all sort of go get through this together.
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Healing together is ah very much in the spirit of this weekend.

Crystal Palace's Recent Defeats

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you say, Dan, today is it's it's good Friday, but we're coming to the end of a bad week for Crystal Palace.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
A defeat Newcastle on Wednesday meant they'd conceded five goals in back-to-back games for the first time since the 1930s.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll dissect that before considering the Eagles' prospects of making it 15-3 against Bournemouth tomorrow on today's episode. Oh, what I'd give to be carrying my own crucifix up a hill wearing a crown of fools right now.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Dan, Newcastle 5-0 Palace. Four goals conceded in the first half. Talk me through what went so wrong in this one.
00:01:27
Dan Tanner
Oh, we were just awful in so many ways. Just I watched the highlight. I didn't watch him all week because I saw the result and I was like, I'm not going to put myself through that because I did the Man City one last week as well. And I was just like, I'm not doing it again. So I to watch them this afternoon.
00:01:43
Dan Tanner
And it's just like, we were just bad. It's like, you can't put it in almost any other way without, because I've got to say this ad friendly. So I can't do what I actually want to say, but we were just awful on every single level like where do i start the penalty for the start probably don't do the little stutter one thing and then do the most limp wristed like no effort like uh sort of penalty shot if you're gonna do that belt it it's like i don't it's
00:02:24
Dan Tanner
awful penalty so bad um everything we did was just yeah just at second second gear never really did anything newcastle tore us apart absolutely just tore us apart it's we're making the same silly mistakes that we were doing at the beginning of the season like we were just as soon as soon as the first goal down completely like no effort no fight no nothing and i don't know how we've conceded 10 in two games when we've gone from arguably one of the best teams on form in the league over the last month two or so and then to go to probably the worst one you could put out sutton united probably could have put up more of more of a fight against newcastle um sorry this is im i'm trying really hard to hold back because this is just i've never seen them be this bad well least to say
00:03:20
Dan Tanner
not for a long time um the murphy goal i think the first one at the a very strange angle which henderson should have been able to kind of stop or deflect but it just goes over his head so i'm not i don't know how much you can probably blame him on that but some of the other ones were just comedy of errors just yeah out of position out manoeuvred I think on one or two occasions, you let Isaac completely wide open.

Defensive Concerns for Palace

00:03:52
Dan Tanner
One of the most so prolific scorers in this season. Definitely one of the top centre forwards in the country. He's left completely wide open on multiple occasions. And you do see Henderson getting actively so aggravated with the defenders going, why aren't you marking him?
00:04:11
Dan Tanner
To stop him, you left him like so much space. But yeah. in to basically put it bluntly we were awful and um it's probably the worst possible time of the season to have this kind of form when we've got the rest of this gauntlet which i've already mentioned before um and we have an fa cup run still to go sorry if this form continues we could probably be looking at like 16th or something like that because there is only i think about eight points or something like that between us and
00:04:47
Dan Tanner
so sort of 16th, 17th, something like that. So when we've got Arsenal, Liverpool in sort of in contention still and a couple of others.
00:04:58
Dan Tanner
So yeah, it was we were just bad. I can't think of any other, well, I can, but I can't say it because it we want to be ad friendly.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it really crystallises that sense now that at least couple of results drive home that Palace have a bit of a tough run. the The priority has to be the FA Cup now. I think doesn't that that's the real focus.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, rather than playing well than winning in the league, but I think that's where the glory is meaningfully possible. But yeah, I think i mean my first instinct when I was reviewing this game was to say that Palace were...
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
a split second too slow to everything. think there's more than a split second that is probably a whole whole second too slow to everything, including, as you say, Eze being second too slow to react to his own stutter for the penalty, where he kind of like, yeah, stammers in front of the ball to bait out that movement from the keeper and kind of does that. mean, you do see Pope make a little movement, right?
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he just doesn't doesn't strike the ball. He seems like he's forgotten what he's doing halfway through.
00:06:06
Dan Tanner
absolutely yeah no power whatsoever he just kind of like half passes it like you would to like your sort of kid when you're learn first teaching them football just to just to pass it to him and he's like thanks come on man
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
stay
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Letting them think I've made great save. Pope looks kind of surprised by it himself. You can see him slightly commit his weight and assume the ball is about to fly past him. And he's like, oh, he's starting shot.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So wasn't it wasn't a great moment there. I think you're right to draw comparison to the start of the season in terms of the nature of the mistakes Palace are making. It's very unconfident situation slightly overthinking and doing things asynchronously from one another.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i thought particularly, don't think all the goals were that badly defended. I mean, you've got to look at ones like Murphy's just be like, that's that's just incredible goal, really.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Shares as well from the set piece was, ah don't think, astonishingly poorly defended. I think it was a good ball, good run, a good header.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But a few of them, particularly, think it was a third goal, Barnes' one, really reminded me of the start the season where three or four Palace players just sort of get sucked into a overzealous, fairly poorly coordinated kind of press and...
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
is it Gimurais picked the ball out through into Tonali who's then just in acres of space in front of the back three who are pretty powerless to stop um the situation by the time that Murphy and Barnes are running at them at pace.
00:07:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, yeah, as you say, ah a few ponderous errors like, Isak, as you say, was was open a few times and actually she didn't take those opportunities. And then the Croix presented him one by just sort of ah yeah being indecisive on the ball, a bit like Saliba.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I made lots positive comparisons between the Croix and Saliba, but this wasn't a positive one. um Yeah, kind of thinking as all the time in the world and trying to turn out, got dispossessed by Ellington. And then again, that was That was a silly mistake. Maybe not one worthy of conceding. It's a very good finish from Isak from distance to get that in.
00:08:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, was it was a pretty bad performance from Eagles. To what extent do you think it it was their errors and to what extent have i just come up against?
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because me and Alex talking about on Wednesday... There is an argument to be made, that is being made, and and you know we we both kind of came down on the side of agreeing with it, that Newcastle are maybe the best team in the country on current form.
00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think it was just that Palace came up against a super confident team team full momentum or do you think they kind of really created the conditions themselves for losing

Factors Affecting Palace's Performance

00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
5-0? I think
00:09:17
Dan Tanner
um i think it's probably a little bit of both because newcastle are one of the better ones at the moment they've won i think five of the last six something like that yeah um now pushing for europe they do have some quality players in tennioli and sort of isaac things like that so you give those players time they're going to do something with it but we're also coming off of
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
that was six in a row against Palace.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:09:44
Dan Tanner
a pretty poor performance against Man City where we were yet again taken apart by one player, ah really one player and poor decision making stuff like that.
00:09:55
Dan Tanner
But I think it also you probably may have to add in a little bit of fatigue as well as a back end of the season and Glasner has been largely playing the same team over and over and over again.
00:10:07
Dan Tanner
So that might start to come into play now at the worst pop possible opportunity. worst possible time um for that to stop because we haven't had too many injuries. We had a couple at the beginning of the season, niggles here and there, but we haven't had major players out for any length of time and played the same same one even in the Cups.
00:10:29
Dan Tanner
So think fatigue's probably coming in. um And yeah, we kind of shot ourselves in the foot, really. We were riding high for so long, it was bound to come down and bite us in the backside at some point.
00:10:42
Dan Tanner
and it's just happened to do it now. So yeah, it's it's probably a combination of both that we ran into Newcastle when they're on the ascendancy and sort of trying to get sort of secure a Champions League spot, which their main goal is to, their main goal and main of drive and team building is to get into the Champions League and stay there.
00:11:06
Dan Tanner
And we've just sort we've just hit a brick wall at the moment, I think. So it's, It's to a point, it's our own doing, but it's... We, yeah, we used to hit Newcastle at the wrong time because we played them before when they were not very good and we we walked all over them.
00:11:24
Dan Tanner
We should have won 4-0, but we was only 1-1 and they didn't even get a shot on target. We had to score a goal for them. So, um it's... We can beat them.
00:11:35
Dan Tanner
It's just we just hit them at the wrong time for both teams. I think it's probably... more what kind of happened there.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah no, I think that's correct. it's
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Own Palace were bad and I think you're right to point to fatigue as a factor in it um equally. If you look at again, think this is mainly a case of the flaws in expected goals, exposing that, because clearly Palace didn't deserve to win the game.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But on expected goals, it was actually like sort of Palace edged it with around two and Newcastle were at 1.7%. seven The only part that which I really think is gives us any insight is that Newcastle had about 1.7.
00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
They didn't have that many huge chances. They sort of did take most of the ones they had and scored a couple in East Sacks and Murphy's that really weren't big chances at all. They were just great finishes and indicative of team in
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah top top confidence. Basically, Palace just didn't have the...
00:12:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the the aim for game against Newcastle, as we were saying, is to slow the game down and just not let them ah yeah pay at their their blistering pace and run through you. And Palace didn't really have the energy or sharpness to do that. You kind of have to be probably fairly kind of street smart and aggressive to do it. And um I think Palace would just...
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
a little bit not there mentally and and that was really what saw them get so torn apart. One positive to take for me is that I'd said before the game, i hope that Palace can get a result while Eze and Gehi have stinkers so that Newcastle don't try and buy them in the summer.
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that was and that was pretty thoroughly fulfilled.
00:13:34
Dan Tanner
Yeah, Newcastle fans going, yeah, we don't want Gahee now.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:38
Dan Tanner
we After watching him, they go, no, we don't need him.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is called twice.
00:13:43
Dan Tanner
Drive his price down. That's not good.
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
but um But yeah, not a great result. One, two, yeah, try and move on from as quickly as possible. But we're not going to move on as quickly as possible. We're going to continue discussing it after a quick word from our sponsors.
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, looking at this outside of just this game, ah broader sense, kind of across the last the last couple of games and the trends we've been seeing, should we be meaningfully worried about Palace's defensive form? Because they've built this really good run in 2025 on the back of being really tight at the back, um yeah not concealing many goals and not giving them a platform to win games without scoring bucket loads.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Has something gone wrong? Have they been kind of found out in a way that is going to continue in... games going forwards or can we write it off as a kind of weird two game blip that yeah we don't need to be stressed about yet Dan what do you think
00:15:34
Dan Tanner
um we for the two game blip scenario we kind of need to see what happens against bournemouth because if it's a blip then it's then we can just write it off now okay cool no worries so but we can kind of slightly be i would probably say slightly concerned that we've not exactly been found out but just sort of we're not as either sharp or something has gone slightly off in the defense somehow, but I'd not like, like the same way that we have no idea how they suddenly turned form around and became this sort of juggernaut.
00:16:13
Dan Tanner
I'm not sure what you can put your finger on why we've suddenly conceded 10 in two games. I think mentioned earlier, fatigue is probably slightly beginning to sort become a factor.
00:16:26
Dan Tanner
It, probably not as much as maybe it would have done 10, 15 years ago because these guys are at the peak physical position condition they've ever been. So it might be a small factor. I don't think it's the biggest factor.
00:16:40
Dan Tanner
um They've got concerns of the FA Cup. They don't want to get injured. They don't want to get yellow cars because it's still the last bit of the season. But it's also like...
00:16:51
Dan Tanner
defending isn't just the back three or the back four, whatever. It's the whole team. If you don't stop it at the root, um like say you stop it in midfield, it's going to be a problem for the defenders.
00:17:05
Dan Tanner
So like the pass of Tegnoli, that one that just whipped right over and there is no, um i don't know who's on the end of it, but he passes it and there is absolutely green grass.
00:17:18
Dan Tanner
It's like that shouldn't happen.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:17:21
Dan Tanner
So they're either getting caught ball watching, getting dragged in, out of position. So somewhere along the line, either tactically or something, it's just turned because against like Fulham, in the FA Cup was probably one of the most like total pieces of football I've ever seen Palace play. They knew exactly where to be and when they knew how who to pass it off to It was absolutely perfect.
00:17:50
Dan Tanner
And then against Newcastle, it's just gone. Against Man City, it's gone. And this was only a couple of weeks ago. So something has gone slightly off. I don't know why put your finger on it.
00:18:03
Dan Tanner
It's football. It could be any number of things that are going on in the back room. they Yeah, slight little niggles, come back a bit too early, getting knackered, whatever.
00:18:14
Dan Tanner
So probably start to get slightly concerned because I brought this up on Monday's one because against Man City, this was without Gahey.
00:18:26
Dan Tanner
So, and as he's probably likely to leave, if this is what our defence is going to be like, it's going to be sort of a real concern to get somebody that can of match his sort of playing style and his sort of talent level.
00:18:45
Dan Tanner
But against Newcastle, he did play and was... nowhere near where we expect him so yeah I think it's some there's got to be something going on in the back room somewhere i just can't put my finger on it and probably never will
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. ah it's I think it's quite clear they need more centre-backs at Palace. um
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
A possible cause of this collapse over the last couple of games is, so as you say, fatigue and like specifically fatigue.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fitness, if any of that back three are really fully fit. they've They've all had to be rushed in as quickly as possible. there were concussion concerns about Lacroix a couple of games ago, and he's played tape through the next two games regardless.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um yeah After having picked up a knock the head against Brighton towards the end, I'd say some of his decisions against Newcastle would suggest that he may still be concussed if those protocols might need reviewing.
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Rich has been out and I think kind of probably rushed back a little and yeah yeah I mean, Gehi, I guess, ah maybe doesn't have the same fitness concerns to lean on, but is just going to be knackered from having such a big burn on him all season and and not even getting ah the international breaks off these days. He's such a big part of the England squad. So I think it could be explained by that. I think you also make a very fair point that part of the problem is clearly the midfield not defending as well as it can midfield and forward line if there was anything tactical in these last couple of games particularly against Newcastle kind of think it's a little bit and this was a case for Palace earlier in the season as well like almost been a bit too confident in the pressing sometimes going a bit too hard not picking their moments right whereas when they've been at their best this season they've
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah pressed in a fairly controlled always been part of the game but sort of yeah fairly conservative way again as as we've spoken about a few times before not really not that kind of Klopp style of pressing to try and win the ball back as quickly as possible but more a kind of smartly funding the ball from one side to the other and That seems go out the window a bit against Newcastle and midfielders, the quality they have can just steamroll through that and I think that was part of why they were so vulnerable.
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully they can just readjust as they did earlier in the season and do... In a the early season struggles might help them. I wonder because they know...
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, we've experienced being bad before, and Len proved to ourselves that we're actually not bad. So maybe, hopefully a bit quicker this time, they can just think, well, what did we change then?
00:21:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
settle again, go back to their basics, revisit what was going wrong then because it looks quite similar now and yeah come come to that solution, come to equilibrium a bit quicker.
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Glaston said after the game, um just throw those last couple of games in the bin. as did the results the start of the season. I'd i probably add to that.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, agreed. The landfill, not the recycling, so it doesn't come back around this time, please. um But I think you can you can basically try and bin them off and take confidence in the three months leading up to these two games rather than just these two admittedly horrific performances.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to have a quick break now for another worth of my sponsor and then wrap up by just having a ah brief review, brief preview of the game against Bournemouth.

Preview: Palace vs. Bournemouth

00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So tomorrow Palace play another high-flying, high-pressing Eddie Howe-affiliated Coastal Force with eighth-placed Bournemouth coming to Salah's Park. The reverse fixture for this one was one of the worst games of football to take place since the introduction of the back pass rule, a 0-0 Boxing Day draw.
00:23:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
have higher hopes for this one, Dan?
00:23:36
Dan Tanner
Uh, we'll see. Um, probably if you asked me this after the Brighton game, I might have done, but, um, yeah, after the last couple of games, we definitely need to get something out of this.
00:23:49
Dan Tanner
And, because they play this kind of, uh, high pressing sort of style with a mix of like zonal marking. So when one player moves off, they know where to be and they're very good at it as well. They're very good at like funneling,
00:24:05
Dan Tanner
uh put the player on the ball into making a mistake um so with the way that we're playing at the moment where we can do it to ourselves I'm not overly confident uh so if we can kind of walk away with a draw at I'd be sort happy about that we need to get a couple more points on the board as I've mentioned before our run is particularly nasty
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:24:31
Dan Tanner
But so is theirs. I think they've got, they're playing Arsenal and Liverpool and United and things as well. So, oh, City, I think it is. Not United. So, um they've got just about as bad as a final one as we've got.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I gonna say, that like
00:24:44
Dan Tanner
So, um they're probably going to be trying to get three points out of this as much as we are. So, um it's, yeah, it's going to be interesting because we're not fully confident.
00:24:55
Dan Tanner
We got done very easily direct long passes over the last couple of games and i think that is one of our kind of achilles heel really um if if they can get sort of like down the down the wings and just pass it essentially right through us then we are going to be having it's going to be a long day at the office but our sort of our style of kind of condensing and being sort of difficult to play against in that sort of in our own half might come to our advantage
00:25:28
Dan Tanner
but we'll yeah we just kind of have to wait and see i'm we don't look that confident and bournemouth well they've got their first win in six and they're looking to try and secure a european spot before they go into their own sort of uh gauntlet of a fixture list so yeah this is going to be a fun one this weekend i think before you ask i think it's probably going to be a 2-2 draw um I don't see us winning this, not with the way that we're going.
00:25:58
Dan Tanner
If we can walk away with a 2-2 draw, I'll be totally happy.
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I've i've got a 1-1 draw, so I really agree. I think you're right to highlight the style is is what's most unique and interesting about Bournemouth.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
They press very aggressively and make the game as chaotic as possible. that I think you're... goal as the opposition team is to not get sucked into that. So if your Palace probably means, and this is sensible regardless given their recent form, playing pretty low-risk football. So I think if it's a boring game, like the Boxing Day one was, that'll be indicative of Palace getting their way more so than Bournemouth.
00:26:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Potentially hearteningly, Bournemouth have... also been in pretty bad form recently uh they won on monday against fulham but prior to that they hadn't won in six i think there was quite a lot of bad luck in there for them to be honest think they played that badly but nevertheless so it weighs on the mind and i'm sure affects your performance when you're just not quite getting in over the line in games um But yeah, I mean, I think if I'm Gloucester, I don't know how you how you'd be wanting set up, Dan, but to me, it's just like, hit the wings as quickly as possible.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't overplay from the back. I think they push Kerkas up really high because he's a great threat, really good attacking full-back, but that does create space for Sara Munoz, who can be one of Palace's biggest attacking weapons. And also, they've been having to resort to... Well, resort to... I mean, maybe he's the first choice, but they've been playing...
00:27:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah 33-yard Adam Smith a lot at right back. And I think we'd expect them to do the same against Palace. And I think there's there's joy in that for Eze as well. um If he wants to recover his confidence, he can have a run at him and I think cause him lot of problems. He wasn't a great defensive full-back in his younger days.
00:28:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now think he's had a few tough games and in recent months where just doesn't quite have the athleticism for it anymore so ah think if Palace can keep it tight and just pump into the wide areas pretty quickly I think they can be confident they can at least get something out of the game but um yeah we'll see don't know would you agree with that Dan is that how you'd how you'd approach it
00:28:27
Dan Tanner
I'm not totally sold on that because they are quite deadly down the wing. So they like to go straight forward. They're doing sort of direct passing.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
hmm

So us going down the wing at them, I don't see, maybe not by the first choice. We'll give it like 10, 15 minutes how it works. But I think maybe sort of containing that midfield a little bit more might be sort of
00:28:49

As

a little bit more beneficial because we play with kind of like two defensive midfield players so we've got two defense that try and top contain that their their playmakers and try and keep like cliver i think is supposed to be back so try and keep him under control keep um uh alex scott not the other alex scott alex scott um
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah i that
00:29:14
Dan Tanner
um keep them under control because they are definitely a playmaker you do not want to underestimate so if you can kind of keep it not quite to the wings quite so much but getting it from them as quickly as possible and then getting it to as who sort of if we can get him with a bit of space and to sarah as well to sort of power it through that sense that midfield we might be able to have a chance but
00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network

They are so good when it comes to pressing. It's going to be interesting. they They know exactly who's going where and when they just, they are taught to read when that player is going to make mistakes or any little flinch, any little misstep, they're going to be on you.
00:29:46
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:29:59
