Introduction and Latest News on Crystal Palace

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another edition of the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host today, Alex Waite, and I'm joined by Wale Bakare. How are you doing, mate?
00:00:20
Wale Bakare
I'm great, Alex. Great to see you again. Great to be on the pod tonight.
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice one, man. It's been a while since we've done one together, but we'll do our best to to provide the latest news on all things Palace and, of course, our views as well um of all that's going on at Celeste Park.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah so Tonight, we've obviously got Tottenham coming up on Sunday, the short trip across London ah to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. so We're going to be looking at some team news, looking at Spurs' is season so far.
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um underwhelming to say the least and we're going to see how Palace can perhaps get a good result over in North London this weekend. Then we're going to cap off the pod by giving our usual score predictions.

Team News and Injury Updates

00:01:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to try our best to to see how this one's going to pan out while late. But um to get started we're going to look at some team news that's come out of Glasner's press conference today. ah So it's the usual suspects, Chaddy Riyad and um Coray are out as long-term injuries.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then there's the case of Adam Wharton, which is he limped off against Forest on Monday in the 1-0 draw with an ankle issue. um It looked bad at the time um and he's going to miss this game according to Glasner.
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then Glasner also said he's got 90% chance of being fit and ready for the big one the next weekend against Man City in the FA Cup final. um So, Wale, just looking at the Tottenham game first, how much of a miss will Warton be for this one?
00:01:51
Wale Bakare
Yeah, it's going to be great miss. he's gotten back to that farm that we know and you know doing the things that we know he's able to do in the last couple of weeks. And it's going to be a grimace against Tottenham.
00:02:07
Wale Bakare
Although I wonder whether, you know even if it was feet, whether it was going to be starting the game, there's the big question as to whether Glasner will rotate things a bit ah with the FA Cup final coming. I was saying to Joe the other day about how I thought you know leading to the FA Cup final, Klasner would want wins just to build momentum. But it was one of the questions he was asked today. And he obviously didn't see it that way. He thought, well, and and to be honest, the Cup final is a separate game entirely.
00:02:42
Wale Bakare
And you the the league games are ah completely different. So um yeah, would be a great miss. with With the kind of squad that Palace have,
00:02:55
Wale Bakare
um it so it's always quite obvious when a player is missing because it's it's not the biggest squad. um You don't get a lot of rotation, so to speak.
00:03:08
Wale Bakare
ah So when when a player is fit, they're playing week in, week out, ah whether it's the League Corp or the Premier

Squad Depth and Key Players Analysis

00:03:15
Wale Bakare
League. or And Glasner looks like he's one to just field his trusted players, you know irrespective of the competition. So, yeah, it would it would be a great miss against Tottenham. But I'm sure there will be you know deputies ah you know willing to come in and try to make a claim for Tottenham.
00:03:35
Wale Bakare
you know a shout out of the FA Cup final. and that That's another thing that you see. There's players who either at all were not getting you know the starting in place and are looking at the games i of leading to the FA Cup final as opportunities for them to stick a claim for least a shout maybe on the bench or maybe even a starting place in the

Tottenham Game Preview and Strategies

00:03:57
Wale Bakare
FA Cup final. so It's good news and bad news that he's unavailable, but He gets the opportunity to rest out um you know the FA final.
00:04:08
Wale Bakare
And um because Glasner will also get the opportunity to look at other guys out of the final against City.
00:04:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's interesting in that like the deputies are obviously Will Hughes and Jefferson Lerma who've been having fantastic seasons you know by any stretch, but then Wharton, the kind of quality that he brings, he's kind of you can't leave him off the team sheet really when he's available.
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you sort of feel for those guys who have put in a shift in his absence and have really really turned up week in, week out.
00:04:37
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But out it seems like as well, Kamada's having a bit of a resurgence. He started the last two games and played really well in the cup semi-final and put in a good shift against Forest as well.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So it's not, although Warton will be a big miss on Sunday, it's not the end of the world. You know, these guys are capable. um It seems like Wale that Kamada will start again on, on Sunday because Glasner's trusted him the last couple of games, but out of Lerma and Hughes, who do you expect to to partner Kamada and Fidding for Warton this, this weekend?
00:05:16
Wale Bakare
To be honest, um either of the two are capable ah footballers on their day. ah Jefferson Lemma is one that even when he's not um

Tottenham's Season Struggles

00:05:30
Wale Bakare
playing at his best, just does the basic things, you know, gets into challenges, ah tries to win the ball, tries to start, you know, attack for the and break down play of the opposition as well. So it's one that i enjoy watching particularly. well use We know he had that runoff form in the middle of the season where ah he did look like he was going to challenge Mo Salah for the PFA play of the year, you know.
00:05:59
Wale Bakare
But... ah
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was that good. Yeah, he was.
00:06:01
Wale Bakare
Yeah, but it kind of died down a bit. But he's another player who understands ah the the job at hand. Although I just, because lot these players, as I said earlier, will look at themselves and back themselves for...
00:06:19
Wale Bakare
you know a starting place in the fa cup final at least you know put in a good shift will use you have to remember is as one that is an experienced player it's been in the situations uh you know uh played cup competitions played um championship playoff so as well so he kind of understands you know those um just one game win or bust situation and and i'm sure he'll be backing himself you know for for the f fa cup final hour game but speaking specifically about the tottenham game ah it could be any of them but and i'd rather have jefferson lemma considering uh you know how attacking sports can be you want someone who's uh you know going to break up play and um
00:07:03
Wale Bakare
you know just link with the attacking players very quickly. And Jefferson Lemma does that time and time again. Of course, not as much as Adam Wharton would do, but he's the one for me ah you to replace Wharton in that game against Tottenham.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so we've got options which will obviously please Glasner and the Palace fans. We've got capable options of filling in. So it's not the end of the world that Wharton's out. um Yeah, and like Glasner said, he's he's got a 90% chance of starting next Saturday against Man City and we'll take those odds looking ahead to the game.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But yeah, hopefully he's back in training next week and he can ah give Man City's midfield a run for their money in the final. Right, we're going to take a short break there and we'll be back to discuss um a declining Spurs team, but Spurs team that's also reached the Europa League final.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So hang with us after this break.
00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast for part two. So we're going to have a look at Spurs now, Wale, who in these parts are considered a bit of a laughingstock amongst the London fans just for... um falling short on occasion. But this season in the Premier League particularly, they have fallen way short of where they should be.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
16th at the moment. um Haven't won in their last four Premier League games, losing three of those. And you would think they're on 39 points at the moment.
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you'd think in any different Premier League campaign, they might have been in relegation trouble. um So... What's gone wrong for Spurs from your point of view this season?
00:09:24
Wale Bakare
Well, obviously it's been the defensive aspect of their game. They've lost 19 games earth this season. That is definitely not what you expect from a top side.
00:09:38
Wale Bakare
um That's half of the games in the season. What it means is... With three games to go, they're well primed to lose over half of the games that they were playing all season.
00:09:51
Wale Bakare
it's It's been the defensive side of their game. um We know Ange continues to talk about you know attack. and We see them attack well. I think after Liverpool, maybe Arsenal, I know that the the part of the highest scoring side in the Premier League as well, Tottenham,
00:10:09
Wale Bakare
So, yes, they've been able to score goals. They've just not been able to keep our goals. And they've just um also found themselves in that unfortunate position of losing a lot of games by the one goal margin. So many one-nil, so many two-one results that that have come against them. So I also wonder whether it's... a a question of experienced players ah you know in the side.
00:10:35
Wale Bakare
ah We know what the sports team used to look like. Remember when they lost out to Leicester in the Premier League, they had strong squad.

Tottenham's Europa League Focus

00:10:44
Wale Bakare
um you know they They've lost that goals that they used to get with Harry Kane.
00:10:50
Wale Bakare
Yumin Son hasn't been at the level that Wino is capable of. He does look a bit lonely in that sport's side a couple of times that he's played and things have just not been the same for you know lot of their players.
00:11:05
Wale Bakare
Yes, they've been quite unfortunate with injuries as well. You could argue that's the situation with many other teams, but it does look like they had a lot of injuries coming at almost the same time.
00:11:18
Wale Bakare
There was a time when They didn't have you know the the goalkeeper, Vicario. They didn't have the the vast majority of the you know starting back line. And he just had to keep chopping and changing with the defensive setup. and when when you do that, it's never really good you know for a team, especially one that always had question marks about their defensive abilities.
00:11:42
Wale Bakare
We've seen them in the odd games this season. They can get a result if they want to. They beat City 4-1, I think. beat United, you know, ah they've got some great results.
00:11:54
Wale Bakare
um It's just sometimes they can be naive ah in the way they play. They can, you know, go gung-ho and forget what's happening behind them.
00:12:05
Wale Bakare
They look like they were coming back, ah you know, against Liverpool in the first leg and then eventually lost 6-3 because they just, you know, cared so much about attacking and never really looked back.
00:12:18
Wale Bakare
Incidentally for them, you You can't really b blame the sports players. It does look like that is the the the style of Ansh Postokoglu. Yeah, of course, you expect players to take responsibility and and just rally themselves and and say to themselves, we we we need to stop you know leaking these goals. but But when you look at the way they are set up, they're not set up really to stop.
00:12:43
Wale Bakare
you know teams scoring them. i remember the League Cup semi, was it the League Cup semi-final they played Liverpool and they had won the first leg 1-0 and for some reason it did look like everyone in the UK knew that they were going to lose irrespective of winning the first leg.
00:13:03
Wale Bakare
so and it So it just sums up their situation. They've just not been able to you know stop goals from coming in. and They've not been able to um keep their players' feet, particularly the defensive players.
00:13:18
Wale Bakare
ah Things haven't just gone well for them. It's it's been a totally, totally terrible season for them. And they they also... are in a very interesting situation, just like United, where they've got a cup final which could define their season.
00:13:36
Wale Bakare
ah There's all sorts of talks about Prostokoglio and his job, ah you know ah being in threat if they do not you know win the League Cup final, what's called now? The the Europa League final. So it's it's a very interesting season that they've had, but I'm sure a lot of their fans would you know look at look at themselves and say, no, it's it's been completely poor, the season they've had so far.
00:14:01
Wale Bakare
Winning the Europa League maybe changes the story just a bit, but so far they've they've had a dreadful season.

Exploiting Tottenham's Weaknesses

00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it's it's interesting though because when you look at their squad, you're like, wow, like really, they're that low down in the table.
00:14:10
Wale Bakare
Yes.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely packed with quality. But... It's just, yeah, like you say, those errors and those laps of concentration. i think when Palace played them in the reverse fixture at Celeste, I think it was Van der Ven, the ball got robbed off him and we went and scored.
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we just we ah like We were terrible at that time as well. It was our first win of the season and we just overran them in midfield and you know put the pressure on them and managed to get a result.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, like I think a lot of teams have done similar. I think it was Ipswich beat them at home this season. um Forest beat them recently.
00:14:50
Wale Bakare
Yeah,
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, Forest are good, but you know they these are teams that Spurs would be expecting to give a better game against at home. Was it Leicester as well beat them, didn't they?
00:15:02
Wale Bakare
yeah I think, yeah.
00:15:04
Wale Bakare
below i see yeah
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah and it's like you know it's not the the kind of Tottenham that you perhaps fear when you go to North London play like they're
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
it it seems like you go there and you can get a result off them. If you play the right way and put them under pressure a bit, they will crumble, which you know no one wants to see that their team like that. which know But hopefully for us, it's an opportunity to ah to bag a result on on Sunday. um So where do you see this one being one for Palace, Wale? Is it kind of the things that we've touched on, like you know putting in the defence under pressure or do we play our usual counter-attacking style? what What do you reckon will work for us?
00:15:44
Wale Bakare
I think it's a game that is well-suited for Palace. Tottenham, whatever you say, will go attack, attack, attack, especially when they they feel something coming and they can they are they easily lose concentration and forget what's happening in behind that midfield line.
00:16:06
Wale Bakare
And they also have attacking players who... a lot of times wouldn't track back or do not completely understand the concept of tracking back.
00:16:17
Wale Bakare
couple of them young. Matthias Tell is one that is you know talented but wouldn't track back a lot. um you know and And they've got some of all these other players. So I think it's well suited for Palace's counter-attacking style.
00:16:33
Wale Bakare
Munoz, Michel bombing down the flanks, getting the ball to Eze, Mateta. And if Eze plays you know the way he's been playing in the last couple of weeks and Ismail Assa continues to be a nuisance like we've seen him in a lot of games ah in the last couple of weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a game where you know a Palace get a good result. It's just um we also for all the good jobs that Oliver Glasner's side have done in
00:17:05
Wale Bakare
ah weeks leading to the end of the season, you also cannot rule out lapses and concentration with Palace as well. You also

Predictions and Conclusion

00:17:15
Wale Bakare
cannot rule out you know of the odd ah defender playing the ball to the attacker lunging in and you know giving away a penalty yeah or losing ah you know, all of the game when it's right there, you know, for the taking. So it's one of those. And it's also towards the end of the season, a different agenda for, you know, the both teams, players, as we said, looking to, you know, make a name for themselves and put themselves in the reckoning for the cup finals that the two teams have.
00:17:45
Wale Bakare
So it's it's a very, it will be a very interesting game, but i think that's Poz's side. The way they play is you're well suited you know for you know the Palace style. and We'll just have to wait to see. I really, really wouldn't be surprised, you know if especially after ah their their great performance in Europe. and That's what we've seen many times this season.
00:18:08
Wale Bakare
you know they play really well in one or two games and they're completely poor in another and this might just be the game if palace played the way they've been playing in the last couple of weeks i won't be surprised if it turns out to be a narrow victory for a palace maybe a two-one result you know for palace
00:18:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, those kind of like European, ah especially the Europa League and Conference League in the Thursday nights, especially when the team plays away and comes back to Premier League on Sunday, like you often see a ah sharp light fall off in in performance.
00:18:33
Wale Bakare
you
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that's been true of Spurs all season, really. I think when they had a tough game at Frankfurt, which they won 1-0, and I don't think they've won since then. um So it seems like they're putting a lot of a lot of their efforts into Europe, obviously, because they're not going to do anything in in the league. um But yeah, like also with, like you said, like with the two cup finals coming up for each side, it's like, will the intensity drop off? Like, you know, no one wants to get injured and miss out on what is like the biggest game of the season for for their team. So perhaps you might see something a bit more cagey on Sunday.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. But we'll see, like knowing Oliver Glasner though, he's gonna want everyone everyone's give 100% regardless of the match. So I don't think we'll see that from Palace, but Spurs, yeah, they might. they might um ah Their performance levels might be off a little bit.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, we're going to take one more break and we'll be back to give our score predictions after this.

and and Welcome back to the final part of this Daily Palace podcast. I'm Alex Waite and I'm still with Wale Bakaro. um So Wale, we're just going cap things off this evening ah by giving our score predictions for Tottenham versus Crystal Palace on Sunday.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what how do you reckon this one's going to pan out?
00:20:26
Wale Bakare
Well, um I might have jumped jumped the coin a bit earlier, but yeah. so um I think it's one of those where Palace might just shade it. Palace have been able to get some crucial away results this season, especially against teams that naturally, although not this season, Palace have been way better than sports, but especially against teams that normally would Palace would struggle to get a result away at.
00:20:56
Wale Bakare
So um Palace have done good away. this and As I said, the Spurs' style of play is well as suited for Palace's counter-attacking style. um If Palace are able to you know get the wing-backs playing in the faces of ah the Spurs' wing-backs and pin them back, and now of course Iberitie Eze,
00:21:18
Wale Bakare
ah you know doing what we know is able to do. And Smilas and Mateta are on song in the game. it will be I suspect it will be a Palace victory. So, as I said, i'm um ah we will be predicting a 2-1 result.
00:21:31
Wale Bakare
Also, remember that Spurs, they let in a lot of goals. Virtually everyone scored against Spurs this season.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah
00:21:41
Wale Bakare
And... and Yes, they score lot of goals as well, but when you put that with the fact that Palace don't concede lot as well, even the champions, Liverpool, I think they've considered 35 goals so far this season. Palace have conceded maybe nine more, I think, when you compare that to the other teams around Palace. Palace don't concede lot of goals, so I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a 2-1 result in favour of Palace.
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice. Yeah. So I'm probably going to go similar.
00:22:13
Wale Bakare
What do reckon?
00:22:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, um yeah, the nature of Palace's games have been a bit weird recently in terms of like, i was watching the Forest game on Monday.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And apparently we've had the most 0-0 half-time results in the Premier League. It like something crazy, like 13 or something. So, and it kind of, that's how we've been playing recently, other than the getting thrashed by Man City at Newcastle.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have been keeping things tight in the first half and then pushing on in the second. So I think it will be, yeah, cagey, slow first half, and then I'm going to go for just a 1-0 for Palace. We're going snatch one.
00:22:55
Wale Bakare
Oh, nice.
00:22:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I reckon as a He played well against Forest, hit the bar with like an unreal shot that thought was creeping in. But um yeah, 1-0 Palace. Spurs have just, like we said, have just got holes all all through the defence.
00:23:09
Wale Bakare
Yeah. and
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't look solid, you know.
00:23:11
Wale Bakare
And to be fair, they're also missing a couple of players, you know, even for this game. Madison, Bergwira, that's another player who's been doing good for them, at least at his level.
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:21
Wale Bakare
You know, it'll be missing.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:23
Wale Bakare
I think Jumim Tone will be missing the game as well. So, yeah, they've got a couple of injuries, to be honest.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, their front line does scare me a little bit, I'm not going to lie. like Especially now Richarlison's back, he's he's he's class. But um they don't seem to do it in the Premier League. like Solanke's having a great season in Europa, but he hasn't really turned up much in the Premier League.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I just think they'll be off it, you know, and it'll be an opportunity for us to snatch a win, hopefully.
00:23:49
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully.
00:23:50
Wale Bakare
ah totally Sometimes I just wonder whether... i don't know what the situation is. Yes, we we we we know all about their defensive goals, but even in the attack, well, they they get the goals, but it's difficult to outscore teams in every game.
00:24:04
Wale Bakare
They've got, as you mentioned, Richarlison, Solanke, Kulithewski is another you know great player.
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:10
Wale Bakare
well, at least, you know, creates chances, able to be in his mind, get the goal sometimes. As I said, Matthias Till earlier, and another talented player from Bayern. So, it's just a but It's just them not being able to outscore you know teams in every game.
00:24:26
Wale Bakare
The first thing for them is stopping those goals. And I just doubt that they will be able to stop Palace from getting one or maybe two. So I'm really, really looking at Palace victory.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's set up nicely for us, Wale. So hopefully we are next time we chat, we'll be talking about a Palace win at Spurs. And also it might be the last time that we see Posta Coglu face off against Palace if they don't produce in the Europa League.
00:24:53
Wale Bakare
Maybe.
00:24:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who knows?
00:24:56
Wale Bakare
He's replacing Ancelotti at Madrid. ah
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
