Introduction and Midweek Review

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast. I am your host today, Dan Tanner, and joining me is Joe Lodge, who's going to... We're going see if we can do a better job of a midweek review than last time where... Well, it didn't exactly go to plan, did it, Joe?...

Newcastle Preview Reflections

00:00:27
Joe
No, yeah, last time out, did a midweek review, me and Alex put preview in for a Newcastle game last Wednesday, sort of semi-confident, said the previous five-goal concession against City had been a blip, and then it happens happened again, happened again moments later, so hopefully bit better this time.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's happened again! but So yeah, hopefully we can do a bit a bit of a better job this time, or at least the omens aren't with us.

Game Predictions and Title Permutations

00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll do the traditional preview of the game, our score predictions as usual, as it is that part of the show, go through some of the permutations that could happen, because, well, the the title could essentially be decided tonight, so...
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't know. There's two or three different permutations. There's even one where Palace decided at the end of the season. It's a little bit out there, but there is still that possibility at the moment. And we're also going to talk football documentaries as Palace has released a their own little...

Football Documentaries and Arsenal Updates

00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
youtube s documentary it came up on my feed the other day so i thought let's give it a watch and then see if we can't sort of recommend some other sort of football documentaries on so some of the bigger platforms that you might want to watch some of you are watching probably some of you haven't so we'll get to that later so let's get into one of the reasons why we're here is the arsenal fixture that is happening in a couple of hours i think we are recording yeah before the game so let's just as i said earlier let's not hope for the same result as last time we did a midweek review and hopefully it's not the same result was the last time we played arsenal twice in 10 days so quick uh team news update uh for palace it hasn't really changed the only real notable diff out is chris richards due to the well
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
stupid red card that he got on the weekend which if you want to know our thoughts on it we talked about it on monday at great length uh with the rest of that very weird game but on the arsenal side uh saka is available which is not a little bit concerning for us but on the use injury list they have uh calafiore is out with an e Gabriel with a hamstring, but i think that's been on and off since Christmas.
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kai Havertz is out with a hamstring as well. Jesus is out, which is after the last game is greatly appreciated as he put, what was it, six passes last time?
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Something like that.
00:03:15
Joe
I think you put five past Palace in a space of two games in a week, as as far as I remember, around
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.

Saka's Return and Palace's Strategy

00:03:22
Joe
the Christmas period.
00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. gay he loved to sort of let him go really the i love jesus uh arm bang came back to bite him in the backside i think on that one uh georginio is out with a rib injury and tobyashi is also out with a knee so joe what are kind of your thoughts on the game coming up this sort of it's it's not the best time for playing one of the big teams for palace
00:03:51
Joe
Yeah, as you say, good news that Jesus is out. Last time he played Palace in a festive window, he absolutely filled his boots and arguably Easter is just as big a one for the JC as as it is as is Christmas. So i think that's very good news so for Palace.
00:04:14
Joe
Very bad news, though, that Saka's back. So... think you you visit can envisage a situation couple of months ago where Palace bed in deep and for straight Arsenal and stand the chance of getting something out of the game.
00:04:34
Joe
That was kind of a very evident problem for them. They drew again who did your against Forest, Everton, Brentford,
00:04:47
Joe
all broadly taking that kind of approach and even lost to West Ham, who were not only taking that approach, but also just a bad side. So that would be quite encouraging from Palace point of view.
00:05:01
Joe
Saka being back, though, really does change that. And... their ability to break down side that are sitting deeper is so much greater with him giving them that option to kind of get in round the side of them providing his threat from the edge of the box as well.
00:05:23
Joe
He just gives him so many more sort of attacking solutions, so much smarter than 99% of other attackers in the league that yeah if you do want to sit in against them and he's on it and he's starting as I think Arteta's suggestions seem to be that he will be, that is pretty bad news for Crystal Palace.

Injury Avoidance and Arsenal's Title Focus

00:05:47
Joe
I kind of get the sense that it's a game that both teams feel like mildly inconvenienced by. They've both got bigger fixtures on the agenda and I think they're not massively concerned about the rest of the league season at this point.
00:06:06
Joe
But it inconveniences Palace more than Arsenal because Palace's next game, the FA Cup semi-final is on the weekend and Arsenal's next game, their Champions semi-final is midweek next week. So they've got a whole week to recover.
00:06:22
Joe
So think it'd be two teams slightly going through the motions. Arsenal with more quality and more... yeah, but more capacity to push on and not save themselves for another game. yeah, I think the odds are stacked against Palace in this one on Palace. Thank you.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i don't really see us doing too much against them it's probably the worst possible time for us to play one of the big teams we're still we've gone a bit sort say gun shy we've been sort of conceded five goals or ten goals in two games we didn't have the best one against bournemouth and we do have an f fa cup game on the weekend so i think very much a priority for on the palace side is not to do anything stupid not to get a a yellow card or a red card that can basically take you out of the next game don't get any injuries but i think arsenal to a point they can they've got a little bit of a luxury i know they're going for the title because they still need to get results to go after the title but they can afford to probably put can probably afford to put a slightly rotated team out uh if they're still sort of envisions of the champions league run
00:07:31
Joe
Wow. Yeah.
00:07:38
Joe
Yeah.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
so I think it's definitely... The ball is definitely on the Arsenal side. They definitely can get away with a bit more. We're... One's still playing the same twelve thirteen that we always are. Now having to reshuffle our defence for the third time in three games because of refereeing decisions.
00:08:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, it's... it's good I don't see Palace really getting anything out of it. We might be able to squeak out a draw... But that's only if a lot of luck goes our way. i The defence is probably fairly solid. Got a little bit of a confidence boost from the Bournemouth game.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't they play Ipswich and kind of just walk all over them like they weren't even there? So when...
00:08:39
Joe
and
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
when
00:08:41
Joe
so bad
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, when Arsenal are on it, they are on it. So what we'll have to kind of see in the next couple of hours. So the the next question, Joe, is what's your score prediction?

Score Predictions and Arsenal vs. Palace

00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
what do you What do you think it's going to be?
00:08:59
Joe
Well, believe in football, all things have changed. equal opposite reaction. Palace conceded five in their last two defeats and also conceded five last time they played Arsenal.
00:09:15
Joe
So, as I say, every action equal and opposite reaction, probably 15-3 to Crystal Palace would be would be my prediction for this one.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like your optimism.
00:09:25
Joe
and On a more serious note, I think it would just be like a drab. A drab 2-1 with both teams going for the motions. But... ah realistic A the sort best-case realistic prediction I can offer is one no Palace with a set-piece goal, which would be particularly satisfying.
00:09:47
Joe
Palace have, under the radar, usurped Arsenal as the corner kick kings this season. think Palace have scored 15 from set-pieces now, which is two more than Arsenal.
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think yeah it's either 13 or 15, somewhere in that window, yeah.
00:10:04
Joe
So I think that would be satisfying sort of beat them at their own Tony Pulis-esque game. But I don't think it's going to happen.
00:10:15
Joe
I think 2-1 Arsenal.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm kind of more 2-0 Arsenal after the kind of... It's not exactly inspiring display against Bournemouth for the attacking side.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't see sort of them really doing it at the moment, especially with the FA Cup game. like don't see Eze and Mateta really sort of getting anything in that. Like Mateta is used to sort like barreling people out the way, but against sort of some of the Arsenal's defenders, I don't see it really going to happen that much.
00:10:49
Joe
yeah one
00:10:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't.
00:10:52
Joe
I wonder if Eddie edie and Cate all got started this one from To be clear I'd say that's his start not go
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
That would be good. If Nketiah gets a a goal at... I think he got one in the League Cup game and he kind of... i think he half celebrated. kind of I could.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I could do this, but I'm not going to. I'm not going to be that guy.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, if he gets... Yeah, go for it. It worked for Adebayor, didn't it?
00:11:15
Joe
He should be that guy they sold him
00:11:23
Joe
Thank you.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So why not be that guy? Go for it. But on that note, I think we'll take a quick break.

Palace's Impact on Title Race

00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then afterwards, we'll go through some of the league permutations because Palace can affect it tonight. So we'll be right back after this.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
That advert, we need to fix that. It keeps doing that. and
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
but advert we need to fix that i keeps doing that but um but This is the Daily Palace podcast. I'm still your host, Dan Tanner, and Joe is still with me, trying not to laugh too much because I'm really, really not...
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
this It's not working at the moment. We're having slight tech issues. So, tonight, the title race could be decided tonight, but not the first time.
00:12:36
Joe
Thank you.
00:12:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace could be the instigators of, well, some team's destinies. We could... really annoy one team fan base make them or we can keep them their spirits alive for a little bit longer so joe have you seen the permutations of what has to happen for the league to uh finish tonight essentially
00:13:11
Joe
Well, I mean, I know you're wrong about this.

Permutations Affecting Liverpool's Outcome

00:13:14
Joe
Yeah, so the big one... that I'm aware of all this, i think I'm aware of is that if Palace beat Arsenal tonight, Liverpool win the league, right? Which would be the, bit of payback or apology 10 years down the line, 11 years down the line for old Chris Stamble back in the day.
00:13:38
Joe
think Liverpool fans that have great history with Palace fixtures at the end of the season But yeah, I think that's the only specific permutation that I've had in my mind going into this game.
00:13:52
Joe
But I feel like you've dug into some slightly slightly more exotic ones here, Dan. So i look forward to hearing what they are.
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
well well the permutations as they stand at the moment are uh if arsenal win the race continues until either one of them loses until they face probably even play each other uh if palace win as you brought up the title goes to liverpool and all they have to do is literally walk out on the weekend and they've won the title if it's a draw Liverpool only need one point to get the title.
00:14:24
Joe
Yeah. Yeah.
00:14:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So on the weekend, at the very likelihood, the title is going to be decided on the weekend.
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But on the very, very off chance, this is so minute. I was talking to my an Arsenal mate mine and he was sort of saying the same thing and a Liverpool mate, that the only way for Palace to determine it on the last day of the season when we play Liverpool is that Liverpool have to lose every single game an Arsenal win.
00:14:33
Joe
yeah
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it comes down to literally the last game of the season. And then it may be even goal difference.
00:15:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that is so unlikely.
00:15:00
Joe
Yeah.
00:15:02
Joe
like
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this is Palace. It probably could happen knowing us. We have this great habit of doing the weird stuff.
00:15:16
Joe
see it. They realise that. It's just written in the stars.
00:15:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... But yeah, it's it's so it's very likely the title will be decided tonight. Yeah, it could it's just, yeah, it could be decided tonight with if Arsenal get a draw, which if they're playing it safe, they might it might happen.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I don't know if if they're going to concentrate more on the Champions League, which I think they can probably win, or if they can realistically close... Was it a 13 point gap?
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's something like that with five to go
00:15:55
Joe
yeah a ballpark yeah I mean it's it's they can't do that sure
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
not really. So if they win, it just keeps going until they probably play each other in a couple of weeks. I think Arsenal still got to play Newcastle and things like that. So they're playing a couple of top top six teams as well.
00:16:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's
00:16:15
Joe
Yeah.
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's this is also the thing like we both said a minute ago that we don't both think Arsenal are going to win. So we think it's going to carry on at least a little bit longer, which I'm kind of on that side that it's going to carry on.
00:16:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's probably going to be decided on the head to head.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:16:37
Joe
yeah
00:16:38
Joe
I think that would least be a positive result for the title race in as much as if Palace win and Arsenal lose it today, then that feels like a kind of a perfectly clean league victory for Liverpool.
00:16:55
Joe
Nothing wrong with that. I don't like, and this might be a bugbear that no one else shares, I don't want to see a team win the league with a draw. that That just feels wrong.
00:17:06
Joe
so if a draw creates that option for Liverpool...
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it kind of feels a bit weird, doesn't it?
00:17:09
Joe
Such an anti-climax. The team draws their way to a title. So I think we want to avoid that scenario. But I think that scenario will be avoided by a professional Arsenal win tonight.
00:17:24
Joe
I'm sure the all the broadcasters Whoever's got the rights, be it Sky or TNT, I assume it will be Sky, will be crossing everything they've got for the results to go the way that it comes down to that Arsenal-Liverpool game.
00:17:44
Joe
make that a kind of whenever stars a align to give you something that's vaguely reminiscent of a final in the title race, that's that's pretty exciting.
00:17:56
Joe
But I mean, it's not really reminiscent final. It's... it's reminiscent of an opportunity to delay the obvious eventual league champions one week further, like I remember United doing to City in the seventeen eighteen season, in that one where Pogba scored a couple.
00:18:15
Joe
But, you know, I think realistically it will continue until until the weekend because Arsenal will yeah we'll take this one as well.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I definitely see that being a likely the more likely one. But Palace do have history with Liverpool and deciding title races.
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you never know. There is a reason there are memes and there is also a reason why Liverpool kind of don't like us. It's been done before, so we could upset them.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the the likelihood is that Arsenal are going to do us and it's going to carry on until they're head-to-head.
00:18:49
Joe
i
00:18:54
Joe
My partner's big Liverpool fan. Her eye still twitches if you say name Dwight Gale. So it's...
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've got, yeah, I've got a Liverpool fan that sort of every time Palace is on the fixture list, he's kind of s slightly worried, especially when it's the back end of the season.
00:19:10
Joe
and
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
He always asks me, when are we playing you? When are we playing? just want to get it out of the way. right. With that, we'll take a another quick break.

Zencastr Ad and Documentary Recommendations

00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're going to talk a little bit about football documentaries, if I can get it out, and which ones sort of, if there are any recommended ones that you either don't know about or everybody does know about.
00:19:29
Joe
Just
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll be right back after this.

South London's Influence: Palace Documentary

00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm still your host, Dan Tanner. Joe is still with me. And kind of celebrate a little YouTube documentary that the official Palace channel put out i think it was a day or so ago kind of kind of promotional kind of sort of retrospective little bit of palace over the last few months uh they put out a documentary on the youtube channel uh kind of celebrate this episode of it was kind of celebrating sort of the south london sort of heartbeat of palace one of its driving forces
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh just quick question though did you get a chance to watch it because i did i think i did send you the link when we were talking about this earlier did you manage to watch it because i did it a little while i ago as well
00:20:58
Joe
i so i think point yeah
00:21:01
Joe
yeah I did watch it and I enjoyed it. I really liked the showcasing of elements of South London. I liked the interview in Morley's with DJ J Knox.
00:21:14
Joe
I liked him a lot.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah didn't
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just sitting in a just chicken sitting in a chicken shop talking about Palace. Nice.
00:21:15
Joe
I particularly...
00:21:19
Joe
Yes. what place the be I particularly liked his ability so say descriptive factual things as if they're dramatic. I mean, that's a good skill and something that we can always hone as podcasters.
00:21:36
Joe
he He said, you come to Sauer's and it's just pitching seats. I thought, yeah, nice. That is accurate. And also when the whistle blows, it's game on, which is also true, but delivered with great gravitas.
00:21:52
Joe
I didn't like, though, the fact that he was wearing his AirPods while talking to someone, but I'm sensitive to that because I i was sat opposite on the train journey of the weekend.
00:22:04
Joe
Somebody was listening to TikToks out loud and laughing to himself with his AirPods in but disconnected and then like extra loud so that the sound of his TikToks could break through his AirPods.
00:22:16
Joe
And so AirPod misuse like that has been... at the front of my mind and winding me up recently.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
that See, that kind of stuff, should you should be in prison for that.
00:22:22
Joe
So that's the only black man I've ever seen in the show.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, that's uncalled for.
00:22:25
Joe
Yeah.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's just not That's just not cricket. Come on.
00:22:29
Joe
That's just not cricket.
00:22:30
Joe
That's just not cricket.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not cricket.
00:22:32
Joe
But no, I enjoyed it.
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I watched it.
00:22:33
Joe
Yeah, it was good.
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. As I say, I watched it a little bit before doing this. so so what And it just it really got me kind of hyped for being a Palace fan because it is just like that. all South London and proud. We are just, we don't care.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to be as loud and as aggressive, as sort of obnoxious as humanly possible. We don't mind. We don't care. And it's just sort of, yeah, it was just sort of that beating heart of Palace, that whole identity is South London and how many sort of players have come out of it and their sort of style that they kind of hone because of where they are. There aren't that many football pitches, so they all do it in these sort of caged-off of concrete things. And it's just like, yeah, ill remember doing that.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember having to find places like that to play football. Cause I want that there's a few, uh, fields and playgrounds around here, but it was, that is one of those things of the more, the closer you get to sort of like South London, the inner bit of South London, the more and more of those there are,
00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So with that being said, can you recommend any other sort of football

Must-Watch Football Documentaries

00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
documentaries? Cause there are a lot of them now on a lot of different platforms. What anyone's who want to do and recommend?
00:23:48
Joe
The
00:23:52
Joe
the best football documentaries are almost exclusively unofficially uploaded in like tiny chunks, 20-minute chunks to YouTube rather than anything that's and anything that's sort of more chic, more corporate, more well-produced on one of the major streaming services is is not so good.
00:24:16
Joe
Too edited, paints a club in too positive a light for the most part on on those grounds I'm ruling out all all or nothing Amazon documentaries except maybe Spurs because Jozo's quite funny
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
i have I have watched the Spurs one. That was quite interesting because that was over lockdown.
00:24:36
Joe
yeah
00:24:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they have to change the way they they did everything. It was very actually quite interesting.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:24:41
Joe
Yes, that's the exception that proves a rule on them.
00:24:44
Joe
But otherwise, they're just two too corporate and the c clubs have too much to say about what goes into them. Other ones i remember thinking of funny, the that Neil Warnock one that's kind of had a second lease of life because of the clipping it up and comparing to Pep Guardiola from his Sheffield United days.
00:25:05
Joe
It's quite funny. It's not very insightful, but there's lots of funny clips from fishing and something being gently sexist to female Sheffield fans. though As a piece of art, and it does go against my general YouTube rule, it's hard to look past Sunderland until I die, i think.
00:25:24
Joe
Two seasons which blends comedy and tragedy of supporting a slightly farcical, unsuccessful football club absolutely beautifully. The episode where they sign Will Grigg on January Deathline Day and just keep like doubling what they're offering for him is absolutely fantastic.
