Introduction and FA Cup Victory

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome to the latest instalment of the Daily Palace podcast. This is our first one, ah myself and Joe reporting as um ah FA Cup winners, which is a weird thing to be saying, even a few days after the event, but hopefully it will never get old.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So yeah, Joe joining me today, what did you make of it all on on Saturday?
00:00:33
Joe
it It was ah pretty special, wasn't it? um I think... the nature the way Palace went about it meant, we were sort discussing just now before, there wasn't a whole lot to enjoy within the 90 minutes.
00:00:50
Joe
um it It was quite, yeah, quite a nervy watch, even though ah want to say it mostly limited um pilot City to kind of half opportunities. Yeah.
00:01:07
Joe
partly aided by Dean Henson flapping the ball clearly outside the box away from Ireland.
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:01:15
Joe
But there was, yeah, seeding control the ball like that to a team that talented always kind of puts you on edge. But what an amazing outpouring emotion. I think it was, it's probably the most, i think Palace become the most popular FA Cup champions since Wigan is what I'd throw out there then possibly even more so because I feel like Palace do ah one thing that has revealed if we didn't know already is Palace are pretty popular with neutrals um so yeah I think it was it it was a pretty special day although will it still feel so special five years down the line when Palace have a few Europa Leagues in the bag
00:02:03
Joe
few more FA Cups, maybe a league title, who knows?
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yes. That's the big question, isn't it? Is how and when does it but when does it wear off? like
00:02:11
Joe
Yeah. How does City remember that 2011 Cup win?
00:02:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
your yeah Yeah, exactly.
00:02:14
Joe
tough
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been a crazy 15 years for them or so, but whether Palace can do the same trajectory, I don't know, maybe.
00:02:24
Joe
yes
00:02:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Weirder things have probably happened in football, but

Post-Victory Game and Atmosphere

00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
we'll see. um ah So tonight, obviously, we we've had a game in between the FA Cup and now, which is an odd thing to ah be looking back on.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Usually the FA Cup is like the curtain, brings down the curtain on the season, but we obviously played Wolves on Tuesday night. um So we're going to look back on that briefly. We're also going to be discussing, as Joe mentioned, the Europa League or not in which would be very pallid if we were to be excluded, but we'll look at that a bit later as well.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we'll just close out by looking at Joel Ward and his impact on the club um since he joined in 2011. So, Joe, we we obviously played Wolves on Tuesday, um which was saying to you before, seemed like a bit of a dream, like...
00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
two days after winning the FA Cup and the guys are coming out with the trophy at Sellers Park. It's just absolutely bizarre, man. It is just so, it just feels like a dream at the moment. But, um,
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, obviously it was ah it was a great performance from sort of half of our um you know fringe players getting a chance. They performed really well. 4-2 victory in front of a kind of buoyant Celeste Park, as you might expect.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what were your kind of um your kind of key takeaways from from that win?
00:03:48
Joe
it was It was a pretty weird game of football. I think it had that... It was a it was a party, really. um Great atmosphere.
00:04:00
Joe
loved the rendition of Glad All Over before kick-off, the whole stadium bouncing, and... And it's a great song.
00:04:11
Joe
It's so much clearer in its messaging than most songs that fans sing before match when they've had a big victory. so There's that famous video of the Hibs fans after they won the Scottish Cup singing Sunshine and Leaf.
00:04:25
Joe
And it's like, I think they're really happy, but they're singing the word sorrow over and over again. ah at least this is like, okay, yeah, this is bottle emotion, just pure pure happiness, pure joy.
00:04:41
Joe
i think the game ultimately had the vibe of a testimonial slash charity match slash YouTube All-Stars match a little bit in that way of Both teams kind of knocked the ball about nonchalantly for a little while and occasionally a goal-scoring opportunity just sort of broke out um fairly passively.
00:05:08
Joe
But there were good performances in there. As you said, it was telling, I think, that... about but the kind of approach the team's had to the game. And both teams have recently kind of had some big pressure lifted off them.
00:05:23
Joe
Wolves been on this great run that's taken them well clear of relegation trouble and and put them into the lower mid-table. Palace have had their biggest game in the season. But the yeah a few of the players, Essay, I think, did well.
00:05:38
Joe
Tenacious performance from him, De Riyadh set up the first goal. Nketiah obviously grabbed two within five minutes of each other and looked sharp and threatening. And I think Ben Chilwell also, as one fringe players, put in good performance.
00:05:52
Joe
assuming Palace are playing in Europe next season, that those kind of players firing will be really important. So that was encouraging. ah But yeah, really, for me, the most interesting part of the game was the celebrations, the atmosphere and the process for me of trying to reverse engineer from Glaston's team selection who had ah hit the booze the hardest on Saturday night.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, who is your go-to on that prediction?
00:06:23
Joe
Well, i ah Wharton's are out for the rest the season and with concussion. I'm not having that for a second. Thank you.
00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I actually saw a fan when they were doing the lap of honour at the end. fan caught hold of Warton, had a conversation with him. Apparently, Warton said he didn't he only remembers Eze's goal and Henderson's penalty save.
00:06:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was there on Saturday and De Bruyne, when he shoots, is double the power of anyone else. But it didn't look like a bat like too bad of for a shot to take to the face.
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:06:59
Joe
Was it before after he'd done the same thing to Gayhi? I can't remember if he came straight off or...
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It was sort of like 10 minutes after, I think.
00:07:06
Joe
Right, okay.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah, just De Bruyne, like final game of Wembley, pinging back his players all over the place. But um yeah, I think Warton...
00:07:13
Joe
ah smart thought... Sorry, as you said, I thought Uncle Mark that like he didn't know where he was when he was up the steps as well. I just...
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mate, did you see his eye after the game? It literally just closed on him. for And then obviously off to hospital. I think like Mateta might be a good shout for hitting the boot. like Just going about it and then suddenly yeah just like ripping his shirt off or something.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah Some good contenders there. I actually think like it was quite a nice occasion having that so soon after winning in the Cup because it gave a chance for the fans to show again their appreciation.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
that full time it just caught up in Full time of the ah FA Cup, you just caught up in this like sea of tears like smiling joy hugging random people but then to go back to celeste and do it it's kind of like a bit more like you soak it in a bit more which was quite nice um and i think winning winning helped as well if we would have got battered 3-0 i mean the party would have still been going but just added another layer of it um and actually saw a wolves van posted after the game
00:08:11
Joe
Yeah.
00:08:21
Joe
I go play.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah how jealous he was of Palace and the kind of what we achieved and like the atmosphere and stuff. But that was us. like That's been us multiple times. And I'm sure it's been fans of many other clubs sitting in that position.
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So I just say to that guy, stick with it, man. Your time will come, I'm sure. But yeah, it's a great moment soaking for us Palace fans.

Europa League Challenges

00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so that's part one, guys. Stick with us after this break and we'll be back to talk about Palace's Europa League chances for next season.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to part two of the Daily Palace podcast. um so The FA Cup win, Joe, takes Palace, should take Palace to the Europa League straight into the the group phase.
00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But it's obviously come to light shortly after the full-time whistle went at Wembley that John Texter obviously owns Lyon, who have qualified for the Europa League as well.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just to put this as bluntly as possible, because I've been reading about it, it's kind of made out to be more complex than it is, but... ah kind of blunt terms is that you can't have two teams in the same competition in Europe with the same owner um or who has a part kind of share in the clubs So and that means that Palace have missed this deadline to file, which was back in March, like an appeal or whatever.
00:10:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So it's being muted that Palace might be relegated to the Conference League without even playing in the Europa League, depending on whether they can get this issue sorted out.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But where do you kind of stand it, Joe? Do you think like Palace will... get their chance to play in the europa or do you think there is like the rules are the rules and that's how it is
00:10:59
Joe
I think... So I don't think this is actually... um correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think this actually stung any clubs yet. I think whenever this issue has come up, some way around it has been found.
00:11:14
Joe
There are issues with all kind of Red Bull clubs and stuff. That said, it will be very Palace to be the first team that are hit by it, I think. this was There are a couple of um glimmers of possible hope for Palace in the, I believe, situation is, right, that Lyon are technically currently in the Conference League spot, but they will be in the Europa League if PSG beat Rem in the final of the Coupe de France, which they should do.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:11:50
Joe
I don't think we can hold on to that too much. Possibly the more realistic hope that we can hold on to is that Lyon, because of Texas, well, as I don't know enough about it. It's a bit bit harsh to just throw Texas mismanagement out there. But their financial troubles, I don't think that's completely resolved that we've been reporting on earlier in the year with the French footballing authorities. So maybe they could still be disciplined and that could make a difference. I think Palace are likely to argue
00:12:25
Joe
the these rules are about an individual or organisation controlling two clubs and Texter does not control Palace. He's quite clearly doesn't get his way all time.
00:12:38
Joe
I don't know how much water that argument holds. And I guess the other option is to do the Maranakis thing where somehow he's convinced UEFA to let him put his shares in Forrest in whatever a Blind's Trust is. And and that makes different.
00:12:54
Joe
But I would say as a caveat on that, um if I were to... They're different characters. If I had to disobey one of Maranakis and Texter, I would disobey Texter.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:06
Joe
um He's a lot less scary than the Evangelos. So... um I don't know, basically, is um is the long and short of it. think there reasons for Palace not to feel too panicked about it yet.
00:13:18
Joe
And Conference League football, as ah it's not that different, really, but it would be a little bit disappointing. like
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it ah sort of I don't think it's been made a massive deal out of, which I think is promising for for our hopes of playing in Europa. um And yeah, I think the example this season was obviously Girona and Man City playing in the Champions League, which is like, there's obviously ways around it. and the multi-club model is becoming more common.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there's obviously got to be loopholes to allow that, especially, you know, the bigger clubs, if so speak um to to play. And yeah, I think if it was...
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
like Parish owning both clubs because of his majority say in what goes on at Palace, then there would be an issue. But because Texters doesn't have as much ah control over the club in that sense, it's sort of, yeah, I don't think it's as worrying as perhaps it sounds on the surface.
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But as soon as these things crop up, you're like, oh, really? It's going to be taken away from us so soon.
00:14:29
Joe
yeah It doesn't feel like one of the situations that the rules are there to prevent. it' it's It's not like one club's run for the benefit of the other at all, is it?
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:39
Joe
So you kind of think it would be harsh to penalise Palace, but you never know.
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:46
Joe
I'm not sure UEFA work and in terms of fairness all the time, so...
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, but yeah, I can't see it being a ah problem basically. like that's just no There would be no reason to to boot us out of this ah the Europa League before it starts.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
like just but I can't really see like a conflict of interest considering how vocal text there is about getting out of Palace as well.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
like he's just high It would probably be um but yeah better for him. but It'd be interesting, wouldn't it if we got to a Lyon Palace, like like, knockout game or something.
00:15:13
Joe
Nah,
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, Texter would, don't know, would he wear a half and half scarf? I don't think so, but...
00:15:28
Joe
you're only on staff, surely.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'd be with the Lyon Ultras, I think. But, yeah, it's a funny one. But as you say, like, if the worst case is that we play in the Conference League, it's, you know,
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's European football nonetheless, isn't it? so And that is progress for a team like us.
00:15:46
Joe
Thank you.
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah So, it's all good the moment. Okay, stick with us for one more break and we're going to be talking about the legend that is Joel Ward after this. Here at Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform.

Joel Ward's Impact at Palace

00:16:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey, welcome back to the final part of this Daily Palace podcast. So, Joey, we're going to look at ah Joel Ward now and his kind of legacy with the club.
00:16:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Just to get us started, how much of an impact has has this man had for ah Crystal Palace over the years?
00:16:42
Joe
Yeah, I mean, I think a massive, albeit extremely slow release impact. um It's, you know, I don't think there's individual season or anything like that where you'd say he's been like Palace's most important player.
00:17:00
Joe
But he is symbolic of and one of the best examples of um what made Palace work in the Prem at first, which was not spending lots of money more kind of getting the maximum out of the players that they already had, um that they'd acquired shrewdly for peanuts. He cost very little, Joel Ward, when he came in.
00:17:30
Joe
ah and And just kind of keeping keeping themselves in good condition to extract the maximum maxim out of themselves. and ah think really...
00:17:44
Joe
really
00:17:47
Joe
it's easy for us to underestimate how difficult that is because we sort of take it for granted, the professionalism and, yeah, sort of just just being there.
00:18:06
Joe
But to play that many Prem games a season, keep yourself, as I say, in in good condition and, To sort of maintain a level, I think in this area of the Premier League, you look how much better the average team is than they were 10 years ago, have the influx of cash.
00:18:24
Joe
You have to be raising your level all the time to kind of continue to look the same. And Joel Ward, more so than anyone else from that team, has really done that. um I'm sure help provide from everything you hear about him, stability behind the scenes as well.
00:18:41
Joe
ah Yeah, I think ah he definitely goes out as a proper proper palace legend.
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think like arguably he's probably Palace's most important player of this era in the Premier League, bar perhaps Wilfred Zaha. um Two completely different players at opposite ends of the footballing spectrum, but
00:19:03
Joe
I won't pick my fiver side, save
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes um But he's kind of like a character that every club has or or needs really. like Just that figurehead of like a new person comes into the club, you know they need a Joel Ward to welcome them, to tell you what the club's all about, to yeah just sort of be that almost father figure of guiding, especially now we've got so many young players in, sort guiding through these moments. and I just remember like the Brighton game this season with crazy like sendings off and just chaos and Glasner looked at Ward and was like, just go on and you know like calm over everyone down a bit.
00:19:39
Joe
yeah
00:19:42
Joe
yeah yeah
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
and ah you know That experience, all right you know his quality has probably declined the last couple of seasons, but that experience is invaluable um and it's something you can only do, i think, by being at the same club for so long.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and don't know if you saw Joe, but he made a speech at Wembley in the in the dressing room afterwards, completely on the spot. But he just sort of spoke so well and like it was almost like he was made to be a coach or a you know step into a backroom role if if possible. But...
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um yeah really inspiring and I think he said something about his ceiling is the players now floor and it's just like that is a great way of saying how far we've come um and we can't really forget players like Ward and like Yedinak Delaney who have provided that for us you know um just a great great person Joel Ward but what do you see him doing next Joe do you see him go staying in football or doing something else
00:20:29
Joe
Yeah.

Future and Legacy of Joel Ward

00:20:44
Joe
what Yeah, he says um he's not going to hang up his boots. So... what that means for Joe Ward. Based on vibes, I see him more as the kind of guy to drop down and play in the championship or further down the football pyramid.
00:21:05
Joe
I can't really see him move into one of the great retirement leagues of the world, but who knows? you know MLS, if any. um
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:21:14
Joe
but I think the point you make there about his obvious leadership skills as a good one. You think something like coaching in the long run would make sense for him. It was interesting to see, um, uh,
00:21:27
Joe
Alise was at the game, wasn't he, on Tuesday. And certainly, as it was as the story was told by palated social media, it was that he'd come to, because it was Joel Ward's farewell, more so than because it was celebrating the FA Cup of his old teammates. think that speaks volumes. i mean, this is ah France international Bayern winger, proper but a superstar of the game right now. And for him to come down and ah say goodbye to Joel Ward, who's such older and seems like he's from such a different kind of footballing world to at least say must speak volumes to how kind of, yeah, important he is in the dressing room, um what big figure he is in in those younger players' lives.
00:22:17
Joe
I'm sure he'll be we massively missed in that way. um was also saying to Dan, um I'm sad because he's the last...
00:22:26
Joe
He's the last bastion of that era where all the great beards were in the Palace team. He had the more muted stubble, but Jednak, Joe Ledley, Jan Kabai, there was a great era where everyone at Palace had a beard and and yet had a succession of it really non-beardy managers.
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:48
Joe
in a Hodgson, Warnock, Bajie. Warnock were a beard. would have been hilarious. I'm sad that haven't seen that. I think he looks so Lord the Rings.
00:22:59
Joe
He probably just doesn't want to be called Neil Warlock. So I don't know why he's avoided it. um But yes, I'll miss that whole era that he epitomises. But He could easily be back as as a coach. He seems to have a really good working relationship with Glasner in that way, which is interesting. it It doesn't seem to have caused problems ah ahead at for for their age at all. The Joel Ward's played almost nine minutes this season. They seem to really function well together.
00:23:28
Joe
You could see him coming back onto his backroom staff in a year or so. And i think he'll be really embraced. I'm sure he'll be missed massively around the dressing room.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. I think it was, a again, post-FA Cup where Glasner was doing his speech before he sort of ushered Ward up to do his, he was almost apologetic. He was like, i haven't given him many minutes this season. It's like,
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he's kind he he seems like a character of complete understanding of like, yeah, I'm at the end, like these guys are doing their bit. Like he's not going to replace Daniel Munoz.
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And I think everyone knows that. and And for him to accept that is like, you know, it's a testament of character. um But yeah, funny you mentioned MLS there as well. Maybe he'll link up with Wilf again at Charlotte.
00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Seems to be quite a throwback. Yeah. But yeah, speaking of beards as well, I don't know who's got a beard at the moment in the Palace team. A very, very clean shaven team.
00:24:28
Joe
John Philippe's got that moustache going on.
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, Munoz has got a bit of a goatee kind of vibe.
00:24:32
Joe
I'm not so sure about the go-to for Moon, that's why I love him.
00:24:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, they're all a bit true.
00:24:38
Joe
Hughes has got a a stealth beard, doesn't he He does have one, but because it's the same colour as his skin, you can't really...
00:24:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I love Husey. He was saw him down in a pint after the FA Cup. Classic.
00:24:51
Joe
Good Good man.
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Love it. All right. That's us offs for today. um If you've enjoyed the episode, give us five stars. um Yeah. And we'll catch you again later on this week.
