Introduction and Overview

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge. ah We're coming to the end of Easter weekend and much as the famously shredded Christ himself would have wanted, it's been packed full of high octane elite sport.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
The county cricket season ended its third week and the snooker world championships got underway. But if you're the kind of devil may care thrill seeker who loads sports track, sorry, if you're not the kind devil may care thrill seeker loads sports track, there is always Palace Bournemouth to enjoy.
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
but the second time this season, the two teams played out a nil-nil draw on a festive weekend.

Palace vs. Bournemouth Game Analysis

00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah With me to talk about this one today is Dan Tanner.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dan Was this one better, more interesting the lot than the last 0-0? or And which team will be happier for the result?
00:01:11
Dan Tanner
Well, um I think as a footballing standard, nothing really happened in that game. Besides from the very sort of weird decisions from the referee.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:25
Dan Tanner
Besides from that, it was an absolutely nothing game.
00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:01:30
Dan Tanner
Nothing happened. There were poor shots, very weird yeah decisions and actions. But on the whole, i think... I don't think any team would be particularly happy with it.
00:01:42
Dan Tanner
think we were probably a little bit more really because we didn't concede a goal for the first time in two games and it wasn't.
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:49
Dan Tanner
So it's ah it's a marked improvement from the last two where we conceded five both times. So walking away with a nil-nil, awesome. That's what we wanted. Bournemouth, they wanted the points as well, but they're still in a bit of a long shot for getting into Europe.
00:02:06
Dan Tanner
And they're also like us got their own gauntlet of top name, top team fixtures coming up. So i think both teams are probably relatively happy with the, the results, just the performance probably needed something more out of it.
00:02:23
Dan Tanner
Cause it was just nothing as a, as a football sort of thing.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:29
Dan Tanner
Absolutely nothing really happened. It was all refereeing decisions were the, the main culprits.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ye Yeah, but you're right. I mean, it was it was still a pretty rubbish game from an actual footballing standpoint. was around 0.3 XG. Palace accumulated to about 0.7 for Bournemouth.
00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that didn't really... I think both of those totals were accumulated through kind of pot shots and little deflections and stuff. Not really, um, yeah, actually any clear cut chances for either side, have maybe one early doors for Bournemouth, which kind ricochets off Halston's outer thigh rather than any kind of part his body that he could turn it in with. But beyond that, really not a lot of action.
00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, I think it was higher pace than the last game um and that led to both teams kind of broke the other's momentum with a bit of tactical fouling and ah physicality and that led some moments of hilarity and ill temper which we'll come on to discuss in the podcast and some funny decisions.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Altogether, that made it more interesting to me than the previous game with Bournemouth, which really was ah about the worst game of football um I've watched from a Palace point of view all season.
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um yeah, there there were some some talking points in this one. Both defences will be pretty pleased with their performances. I think Palace... given we're about to come on to, they played half the game with 10 men. We'll be happy, given how defensively shaky they were in the previous games, to then shut out a pretty good Bournemouth side.
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
whether man disadvantage is is a good result for Palace, but it was not entertaining at all.

Referee Decisions and Controversies

00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, Palace did play most the game with 10 men because Richards was controversially dismissed for a second yellow card.
00:04:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
towards the end of the first half. ah The ref was pretty roundly booed by the Sourhurst supporters who felt it was inconsistent as Bournemouth's Alex Scott had escaped a similar red card um not long before. He already had a yellow, brought Salah down at pace and escaped the second.
00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think, I think we've already got a sense of this, Dan, from your earlier comments, but you think they had a point, um the fans in the stadium? And maybe more personally, would the game have played out any differently had Rich has not been sent off?
00:05:18
Dan Tanner
I don't about the game had played any differently because they were basically kind of canceling each other out. Both teams going forward were pretty poor, pretty of lackluster in any way, shape or form.
00:05:30
Dan Tanner
But in the case of ah the referee making a poor decision, yes, but a hundred percent, it was the stupidest yellow card I think I've seen ever.
00:05:42
Dan Tanner
Essentially he gets a yellow card for slightly touching Kluivert's wrist while he's running.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah and
00:05:49
Dan Tanner
That's it.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
that i mean no ah that's That's the reason it's so frustrating.
00:05:50
Dan Tanner
And then Kluivert goes over like a sack of spuds and the referee is right there. He doesn't even hesitate. And it's just like, yeah, yeah.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
isn it and and Even the first one on was it Batara? It's not a lot of contact from Richards, really. um It's a little bit... clumsier so you can kind of understand it a bit more but ah it's they're both questionable yellow cars in their right i guess that is why it's so frustrating for palatis because scots are much more the contact is a lot clearer um and the intent is slowing down yeah
00:06:28
Dan Tanner
Yeah. tackled Tackled from behind, yeah.
00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:06:32
Dan Tanner
Tackled from behind and actually he's a yellow guard and he's like, yeah, no, hang on, what?
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:39
Dan Tanner
so
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I kind of feel that maybe with the kind of the pace of the Premier League now, the amount of loads fouls that just kind of inevitably occur, maybe neither of them should be should have been sent off, really. um Both of them would have felt a little bit officious.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if going to send one of them off, you should send both of them off. Yeah. if you were throwing someone on the Moffat, it should definitely be Alex Scott, not Richards in that situation. So it was, i think, definitely a bad decision. But I agree, I don't see it having played out any differently, regardless. I think the way that Palace set up, which was the way we kind of wanted them set up, was not massively dissimilar to how you'd play with 10 men anyway, which was kind of go long, hope to kind of
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
you nick something in limited possession you have and and largely let Bournemouth and play through you, which is not their great strength, rather than giving them opportunities to press you and turn the ball over high and quickly in transition, which which is what they want to do.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think the game plan would change much and Palace weren't creating anything or playing any differently with 11 and 10. and ten So... I don't think it's really like an injustice that's cost Palace three points here, but it is nevertheless a frustrating and bad decision, which probably really cemented the game as one that was going to be rubbish because if Palace had any inclination to push on and and be a bit more attacking, that was completely eliminated by the sending off, I'd say. um

Player Performances Discussion

00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah.
00:08:25
Dan Tanner
my My real thing on it really is like, this has been a culmination of like really bad decisions for Palace for refereeing over the last few weeks where they are making some wild decisions and then it just looks stupid.
00:08:39
Dan Tanner
it It brings a sort of, they are so inconsistent. Like we've had the incident with Mateta. Oh, it's a yellow card. What, for getting kicked in the head? That's a yellow card.
00:08:50
Dan Tanner
What? No, that's a,
00:08:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:52
Dan Tanner
And I think against Brighton, where Nketiah gets a yellow card for literally walking on the pitch, almost.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't. I can't. can't.
00:08:58
Dan Tanner
Anyway, i'm slightly exaggerating. But we seem to be getting really, really silly yellow cards from refs that either... i don't know if they're getting a quota for yellow cards or something, but we're just getting some really, really poor refereeing.
00:09:14
Dan Tanner
And it started just it's starting to irk me, because it seems to be every week now we get one that it's... Anywhere else, nobody... if it was a better referee or something, it wouldn't have been a problem.
00:09:25
Dan Tanner
Cause it's just like the standard of refereeing has gone massively down over the last year or so.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Assuming it's not a conspiracy, then hopefully Palace will do a terrible ref making bad decisions in their favor in the semis or final.
00:09:31
Dan Tanner
ah we
00:09:33
Dan Tanner
No, obviously.
00:09:41
Dan Tanner
Exactly. But, um, cause in this game, uh, Bournemouth seemed to be able to get away with almost anything.
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. ah
00:09:47
Dan Tanner
There were several other instances where it was a yellow card and it's like, Nope, it's fine. Carry on. And the Palace players are just looking in at utter disbelief of like, what why isn't that one a...
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:00
Dan Tanner
And it's just... Oh, it was just so frustrating.
00:10:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well...
00:10:04
Dan Tanner
Just a ref that knows what they're talking about. Please, please, don't ask much.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll come on to, towards the end of the episode, one thing which i think did result yellow card for Bournemouth, which was particularly outrageous and sicked.
00:10:19
Dan Tanner
I think I know what you're going to talk about, so I'll leave that one.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I won't spoil all that. You have to wait until the end for that. We'll have a quick break now and then continue our discussion of this most exciting of fixtures.
00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So did that anyone for you, Dan, stand out as playing particularly well from a Palace perspective in this game?
00:11:19
Dan Tanner
Well, I think think Will Hughes is probably the one that was given kind of so essentially the player of the game from when it came from the Palace point of view. But in general, we were just, it was just a game where nothing really happened. We both cancelled each other out.
00:11:33
Dan Tanner
The shots were poor, weird deflections here and there. So nobody really stood out. But Hughes, I think, was one that was given the man of the match. So I'll probably give so side with the ah official team here because he was,
00:11:47
Dan Tanner
He did have to sort of pull his weight around and did what we were suggesting or I suggested in the podcast the other day was to kind of control that central midfield, which between him and Wharton kind of did.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep
00:11:59
Dan Tanner
But it was just really to no real effect when we're playing 45 minutes without, well, with one man down.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
with a yellow card happy ref like that it's absolutely astounding that will hughes didn't get himself sent off so i he deserves man the match maybe for that alone um the biggest yellow card magnet in the league maybe i think he's a good shout Gahie, La Croix and Henderson, I think all did well.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, to be fair to defences of both teams, part of why the game was so boring is that they did the traditional elements of their job. They're just kind of physical box defending really well. Won lots of duels.
00:12:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't um it didn't make any errors and and I think Particularly Gahin the quad. I'm not sure how much Henderson's been at fault, but probably needed a performance like that for their confidence. So that was good to see. And yeah, um hopefully that's just them back in the rhythm.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's their best because we know what good centre-backs they are. Mitch and all right, both energetic outlets. And I think in attacking sense, the only one really who...
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
acquitted themselves particularly well was Saar. I think he kind of, wins both those fouls that maybe you should see Scott sent off and was, he he crossed the ball in for Munoz towards the end for maybe Palace's best chance. Not that wasn't, not that was a great chance really in there.
00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was very easily covered off by Housen, but I think he looked the most lively and also looked lively in doing something that usually we see him at his best when Palace have the chance to counter him behind and just he's basically sprinting him behind a defence and someone finds it a through ball.
00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whereas here he was actually picking a ball up a lot deeper and driving and causing the... more central kind of defensive midfield players a ah problem for Bournemouth in that regard. so And I think that was really positive to see as a kind of new string to his bow.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think Saab would deserve some credit. But in general, most of the team weren't outstandingly good or bad. It was just, as you say, there was too little football played to make much of a judgment on that.
00:14:17
Dan Tanner
and It
00:14:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:23
Dan Tanner
was just very standard across the ball. Nobody was particularly bad. It just sort of cancelled each other out. And some as we mentioned earlier, is some very weird decision making but um and some slightly weird deflections. But other than that, it was yeah it was as you would expect from Palace. Nobody was particularly bad or anything. It just yeah cancelled each other out.
00:14:42
Dan Tanner
So classic mid-table played the football, really.
00:14:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
is i mean this This game shouldn't really be one of those fixtures because of what Bournemouth are fighting for and maybe what Palace are fighting for. though i think we've had a bit of a reality check on that in the last couple of weeks.
00:15:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you do feel we're getting to that point of the season where it can become a bit of a grind. there's like A lot of teams are not playing for that much and Or in, say, Palace's case, definitely prioritising a different competition, how their league season's kind of established. And yeah, I think the some of the enthusiasm is starting to seep out of the league now.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But as we say, Palace do have a big week of fixtures ahead. They've got a testing ah testing game against Arsenal in midweek.
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, more importantly, they've got an FA Cup semi-final with Villa awaiting them on Saturday.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
The team were certainly in need of a confidence boost going into this match, having conceded 10 in two games. is Is this performance the confidence boost they needed? Can they take a lot of yeah ah lot of confidence out of this and go into those games feeling sure of themselves and and ready to go for it? Or do think they'll still be a bit of a low ebb?
00:16:12
Dan Tanner
i think it'll be a little bit of a low one but there'll be a slight bit of confidence because we did get one without uh conceding a goal for a while but i think yeah it's the going forward i think we'll definitely need a little bit more of a boost the defenders are probably riding high that they managed to get get away with essentially keeping a clean sheet with uh 10 men for 45 minutes so that they'll be galvanized and going right it we need because this is now a almost third game in a row where one of our center backs is not available so they can that is now another reshuffle for a couple of days against and then going up against probably one of the high-flying attacking teams in the league so uh that's gonna be fun on wednesday
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Hmm.
00:17:01
Dan Tanner
but we could slightly decide the title depending on which uh way the result goes so uh either we're going to push it for another week or it's going to be done and dusted so uh well we'll just have to wait and see on that but it's they probably gained a little bit of confidence but not enough to where we were say a month or so ago when we were sort just passing the ball out and it was just free flowing and every single team hated playing us we need to get back to that but it's But when they've got one eye on the FA Cup and also one eye on it's nearly the end of the season ah kind of thing, they're kind of thinking, right, don't don't do anything silly.
00:17:40
Dan Tanner
Don't get sent off. Don't get any silly injury for the last few weeks.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:45
Dan Tanner
So it might be sort of just ah holding in sort of second gear, just cruising. Let's just finish the league off and try and get ah further in the FA Cup.
00:17:55
Dan Tanner
I think it's definitely their priority.
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're right. is
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely, if they can then put in a good performance against Arsenal, at least a good defensive performance, that is a meaningful confidence boost for the Cup because we all know these Cup competitions are first and foremost about being hard to beat, managing to survive with 10 men against a pretty good Bournemouth side and and limit them to really no clear-cut chances.

Looking Ahead for Palace

00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
should be a bit of a confidence boost in that regard for Palace. But as you say, there's not much to be said about in an attacking sense. um So it's more like it's the first foundation probably of a confidence boost after those two difficult games with City and Newcastle But they probably need another sort of respectable performance against Arsenal to us no so really go into that FA Cup semi-final with the same level of ah confidence and mojo that they had prior to those two humblings.
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But, you know, it's it's a positive. It's definitely step in the right direction. I think it's it's as as boring as the game was, it's not a really a bad result for Palace, given the context, given the red cards.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we can we can view it broadly positively. um We'll have a quick break for another word from the sponsors now and wrap up by yeah speaking about that slightly strange incident in the game that I saw earlier.
00:19:36
Dan Tanner
The slightly cheeky bit, yeah?
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So and there was a fairly ill-tempered start to the second half of this game. And a wee tussle between Sar and Klaiver ultimately resulted in the latter debagging the former, ah pulling his shorts down to reveal a pretty tight pair of briefs.
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
what What was going through his head here, Dan? How did this happen?
00:20:30
Dan Tanner
I don't know.
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why did this happen?
00:20:32
Dan Tanner
I don't know for the life of me. like How is that not ascending off?
00:20:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I guess
00:20:38
Dan Tanner
I've never seen that before on a football or a professional football pitch. Maybe on a Sunday league when somebody's getting a bit uppity.
00:20:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
there's just no protocol for that.
00:20:45
Dan Tanner
It's
00:20:48
Dan Tanner
yeah so what you do to your kids when they're sort of beating you. just
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
this ah that I thought it was pretty funny like as as these kind of petulant actions go it at least brought a bit of colour to what was otherwise pre-boying match I liked it creates a rare situation where you're used to seeing people be like D-bagged on the playground um growing up and and the obvious first reaction is like pull your trousers straight up and act like it hasn't happened go and kick the person who did it But because he obviously wants Klaiver to be in trouble with the ref, Sarr's in no rush to pull his trousers up. So taking an isolation, it looks like he's just showing the ref his briefs, taking his trousers down, theres a looking around to make sure he sees.
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think there's a lesson, though. You mentioned the red card for all other teams playing Bournemouth. If Klaiver's liable to do this... on the off chance he's liable to do it again.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just don't wear pants because he will get sent off. If you're not wearing pants, he'll get sent off.
00:21:50
Dan Tanner
You will get standoff for it,
00:21:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
The pants have saved him a red card there.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's something I'd be doing.
00:22:00
Dan Tanner
Just still very, very reserved sort situation. I know you're going to too many in football ones like that, but just, I don't know why that's not a red card. That would almost be like a given, like you don't do that. So I don't know what's going through Klybert's head at that point.
00:22:18
Dan Tanner
So, uh...
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I assumed I just saw the stills that was like they'd had a bit of a grapple and he kind of accidentally pulled his shorts down while he was griffing his shirt.
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think it really was that. It felt quite Yeah, it was weird.
00:22:31
Dan Tanner
I don't think there was a delay to the second half because of it. I think there was a delay to the second half because of it.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:38
Dan Tanner
So, it was like...
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was weird
00:22:41
Dan Tanner
I don't know what's going through Clyvert's head. So, um... Yeah, there are no words for it It's just like you don't shouldn't be doing that on a football pitch. No.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
not above the age of nine
00:22:56
Dan Tanner
no
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I enjoyed anyway. I liked that kind of, that sort of petty squabbling. It made me laugh in what was a pretty boring... The league is getting overly professional in some ways.
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Teams are too kind of universally competent. That's from one of the themes of this season. So when someone just does something bizarre like that, it at least adds a bit of colour to the game. Although I do feel a bit bad for Aldis Myla because it's not a great situation to be in by yourself.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
debacked in front of 30,000 spectators yeah I think you owned it you owned it quite well yeah I'm not the weird one but
00:23:31
Dan Tanner
Just like he just sort of stands there just waiting like, yeah, come on. Yeah. All right. He just opened it like, yeah, right. This is me.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah yeah I think that's probably all we have ah time for today so ah thank you Dan for joining me
00:23:54
Dan Tanner
No worries. Always a pleasure.
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you listening. As ever, if you've enjoyed it, give us five stars. really helps us out. And we will be back ah later in the week to speak about the Gooners game, the FA Cup semi-final and all other things Palace.
