Wale Bakare
you
00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast. I am your host today, Dan Tanner, and we are joined by the illustrious, always informative, Wale Bakari.
00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
How you doing, man, after this really nice, long, hot long hot weekend we've had in UK of a great...
00:00:31
Wale Bakare
Yeah, well, I'm OK. Great to be on on the pod with you, Dan. It's indeed been a you know good weekend, a lot of football, although, um of course, that's coming from the Champions League and Europa League during last week as well. So it's been a lot of football in the last couple couple of days. But yeah, I totally, totally enjoyed my weekend. Hope you did as well.
00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah. Many, many barbecues. This is the UK. As soon as it's sunny, everybody is having a barbecue. as I think that's like two in three days. It's like, oh, my God. I think I don't need any more meat for a while.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But...

Weekend Highlights and Football Preview

00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
so Talking of the weekend, we are going to go through the the Spurs game, which was kind of one-sided, really.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, we're going to review that game. We're also going to start the build-up for the FA Cup final, which is essentially happening just shy of a week from now. So it's time to start getting excited. I think I'm getting there. Alex definitely is going to be bouncing off the wall. He's going to...
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
be ah ah Yeah, he's going to be smiling from ear to ear by the by the end of the week. And we're also talking about finals. We're also going talk about the Europa Cup final.
00:01:43
Wale Bakare
Thank you.
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, well, they're participants, really. Do they kind of deserve another shot at Europe this year as they are Basically, as of recording this, bottom end of the league.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll get onto that later.

Palace vs Spurs: Match Analysis

00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So to start with, I think we're going to start on not a high note of the Spurs game, which Palace won 2-0.
00:02:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fairly comfortably from what I saw from the highlights and was doing the the rolling news on my phone. the Just completely, utterly dominant performance from Palace.
00:02:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We played like the home team very much in the same way as we played the against Man United at Old Trafford. Just totally, utterly dominated players.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
pretty much every single stat think seem to also think that spurs didn't get a shot on target for at least a good 40 minutes into the game which that's just i that's unheard of this is just just they should not be this bad but yeah i think you and alex went through this on the on friday's part that they just Yeah, it's it's just a mess there. It's going to take probably another three or four years for them to get out of the mess they're in.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
The same with United. But yeah, Eze got two goals, pretty much sitters. The first one, he looked incredibly embarrassed to score.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And besides from a little niggle of a slightly controversial automatic offside, which if you have a look at it, it's a little bit, oh, is that an offside? Is it not? Even to a degree when the governing body of refereeing are questioning that that's what it called.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Wale, what are your thoughts on the game yesterday? The

Palace's Strategy Explained

00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
next question is, did you see it? and yeah Any like thoughts or any things like that?
00:03:45
Wale Bakare
you Of course, I have to say that my prediction with Alex on Friday was a 2-1 victory for Palace. First of all, i said i did um made a prediction of a Palace win because...
00:03:59
Wale Bakare
Palace have been, for some reason, although Palace have had some good home results in the last couple of weeks as well, but Palace have likely been better away from home this season.
00:04:10
Wale Bakare
Tottenham is a team that is suited for the Palace style of play. They will you know keep attacking like headless chickens and not you know worrying about know what is it they say about the proverbial bird with its head in the sand and all the flanks open.
00:04:32
Wale Bakare
That's Tottenham. And you know so They were just set up for a Palace onslaught. And that was what we saw. Quite similar goals.
00:04:46
Wale Bakare
Ball into is a... Cut back into is a good finish. But those are the goals. There were so many other chances Palace could have scored.
00:04:55
Wale Bakare
before then. to Just as you mentioned, it took Tottenham a lot of time to you know register their first effort. and They did you get some chances to towards the end of the game, but it was likely Palace. It's not very often that you find a game where Palace dominate in possession, dominating chances created you know and and and and get the win.
00:05:16
Wale Bakare
and they They did that against Tottenham. It's just... it's It's really lovely to see Palace play like this, ah ah especially looking ahead of the FA Cup final against City, coupled with City playing against Southampton. I really wish they played like that again you know next weekend.
00:05:35
Wale Bakare
But yeah, Palace were we fantastic against Tottenham. the The boys were on fire. I was seeing this article about Munoz and Aoi,
00:05:47
Wale Bakare
you know is a different type of right back or wing back. And he just does things so great, gets a lot of goals, creates a lot of chances and see the chance he created for Eperitieze, waited until the last minute Drew the defender you know with Eze to himself and then made that pass to Eze. It was just an easy finish for Eze. It was just a good game you know all around.
00:06:16
Wale Bakare
The boys played well. No worries about players that were missing, Watton missing and the likes. you know Everyone played well and it was a good dressery arsehole.
00:06:27
Wale Bakare
you know Although Tottenham are nowhere near what Manchester City can be, but was a good dress rehearsal ahead of the FA Cup final.

Anticipation for the FA Cup Final

00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was a completely one-sided match. I think even Spurs, it was a slightly rotated team, I think. But still, you look at the players on there, they should have been a little bit more of a match, but they were just completely capitulate.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
They had no fight back, no nothing. We ran the show like like we were the home team. And if you've seen Palace's home form of this season, you'd think, yeah.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was just... absolutely a completely and utterly dominant one-side of like one-sided affair. It's still like Eze's face when he scored the first goal.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
He just looked so embarrassed to do it because it was so easy. Completely, utterly wide open and he just sort of passes it. No fight back, no nothing. It's surprising that both goals were almost identical.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, and it's just... I don't know what we did to kind of like do that. Cause like at the beginning of the season, we were doing exactly the same thing and it wasn't working.
00:07:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now it's just since like, as I said, like since November ish time, it's just all started to click. And as you were saying earlier, every single player knows what they're doing. Now we can to a point, rotate people and out a little bit more, maybe,
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, it's it's all coming up roses at the moment, and it's all hitting, as so hitting me as we're going into it the week before the FA Cup. Even better, there were no injuries, there were no silly suspensions, no real refereeing shenanigans that could...
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
mess up anything besides from the ah ah offside, from an automatic offside decision, which if you look at it, for some reason, it it counts Mateta's arm as being offside, which I'm pretty sure you can't. That's not how offside works.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know we have a lot of flack with VAR, and they'll call like a toenail or a shoelace or something, but this was, I don't think you can be offside from an arm.
00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure. Somebody may have to correct me on that. Not that I know of, but when you have the board, the governing body of refereeing also questioning this, there's got to be something going wrong with that system, but it's still, there's still kinks to work out. There's still things to go. So we're not go to write it off totally yet, but I think it needs to be worked on a little bit.

Palace's Growth and Managerial Impact

00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think there's much more to really say about that game except absolutely brilliant performance from Palace. And just hope it continues for the last couple of days, of like weeks of the season.
00:09:21
Wale Bakare
Bye.
00:09:25
Wale Bakare
Yeah, and you know you you make a very interesting point about yeah the start of the season and Palace doing the same thing and you know things not clicking. And I just wanted to say, at the start of the season, actually, how many times did we say, even though Palace lost games and dropped points, the performances were not entirely poor in a lot of games. We could see flashes of you know the brilliance of the players, but for some reason, things were just not clicking. It did look like, you know, there was some lack of belief. It did look like there was some exhaustion on on the part of some players. But, you know, over time, we we we we we we began to see it. to Also, remember, it was it was the first preseason with Ove Glasner, you know, for the boys. So,
00:10:12
Wale Bakare
Maybe those kind of had an effect, but you know we've we've we've just seen Palace grow over the season. And I'm really backing the team now to go on and you know break that 50-point mark in the league. But that performance so you know against Tottenham was just amazing.
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Can't, can't really disagree more. and We've got two more games after the f FA Cup. There was a good chance we could kind of nick into the top 10 for the few results going our way. Uh, we got wolves and then the champions.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, uh, we'll just see how we go. If we can't make a couple of extra points here and there, but with that, we'll take a quick break and then we'll start the, this week's buildup of the, uh, the FA Cup. So,
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Be right back after this.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the Daily Palace podcast. I am still your host, Leigh Dantana. And Wale is still here getting hyped for the f FA Cup final. Come on, guys based Very, very quick question, Wale. Are you hyped up for this? Are you ready? Because as of recording this, it's five days into the f FA Cup final.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
You picked a great year to become a surrogate Palace fan.
00:12:12
Wale Bakare
No, ah honestly, i'm but I'm really excited about this. And it would really be lovely you know if Palace were to go and you know to win the FA Cup. Not just for Palace, but for football ah that this season in the in the in the in the country.
00:12:30
Wale Bakare
you know Newcastle won their first title in a very long time beating Liverpool in that League Cup final, which Liverpool have almost turned to their best rights in the last you know couple of years.
00:12:43
Wale Bakare
Liverpool won the league and then Palace victory in the Cup. It would be really... you know, results not expected.
00:12:52
Wale Bakare
for for one but With the Liverpool-Newcastle final, a lot of people tip Liverpool to you know go on and you know win the League Cup, but not just did Newcastle win, they completely dominated you know that final.
00:13:06
Wale Bakare
At the start of the season, the, well... a lot of predictions were City, Arsenal, Liverpool had a new manager and lot of all these things, a lot of people didn't tip them to win the league, but they've gone on and won the league with games to spare. So but the season has seen very unlikely or unexpected stories, ah you know so to speak. So it it would crown it all if Palace had to go on to win you know the FA Cup final. But the The sheer joy, the sheer reality of having a chance to go back to Wembley after that fantastic result against Aston Villa in the semi-final is something I'm sure lot of Palace fans are relishing and would enjoy.
00:13:47
Wale Bakare
you know, the the trip back to Wembley. And um' I'm excited, you know, for the final. I'm excited with the kind of football that Palace have played, you know, so far, especially in the second half of the season, particularly in 2025.
00:14:00
Wale Bakare
And if if they give if the team really... It's about going to Wembley, you know, acquitting yourselves well, representing the club well, don't roll over the last league game between Palace and City.
00:14:15
Wale Bakare
was ah ah was a bit of an embarrassing one. Palace, you know, led and then lost five to, you know, if they got two-hour results in the previous leg. But, you know, it's about going to that final and representing the club well.
00:14:29
Wale Bakare
And I do feel that not just the fans, even the players are quite hyped up for this final. And I think we're in for, you know hopefully a fantastic game, you know, between City and Palace in that final.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I've been grinning ear to ear ever since beat Villa. So that was watching that game. Cause I of actually, cause it was on the TV for once. It was actually, it was just watching it and sort of seeing how well we absolutely just breeze past them very much similar to how we did against Spurs on the weekend.
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just how good when we all click, how good palace actually are. And I kind of want a trophy. We're a club, like not every club gets trophies. I know that.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we're a club that's sort been there a few times. We got a couple of times in the 90s. We got to the FA Cup final again, i think eight, nine years ago. I think it was 2016, something like that with Alan Pardew.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we had a shot. We had a shot against ah ah United, but it didn't last very long. was kind of quashed fairly quickly and then United go on and win it.
00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
so But it be I think for football at the moment, especially in the English League, somebody other than the top teams winning cups, I think is what we're kind of screaming out for a little bit more.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you say, Newcastle, they won their first trophy in God knows how many years. I'd have to ask the Newcastle guys how long ago it was. But just...
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Another team that isn't the same old guys, like Arsenal winning it two or three years in a row, City winning it. I think the last one that wasn't them, might be wrong, but I think it was probably Wigan that wasn't.
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It may even be Leicester, I can't remember, that wasn't one of what you would consider the traditional like leaders, the top six, top seven in the league. So Palace...
00:16:34
Wale Bakare
Yeah, Leicester wanted it a bit Chelsea the other time.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
think
00:16:40
Wale Bakare
Wiegand wanted you know met many years ago as
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you, yeah
00:16:44
Wale Bakare
not very sure there's been ah ah many outsiders you know winning the FA Cup in recent years. So yeah yeah're you're right.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, so Palace winning it, being the outsider, being the underdog. And I think being the underdog, I think a lot of people that are going to watch it outside of maybe Manchester are probably going to be going for Palace. I might be wrong. There may be a north-south divide. I'm not totally sure on that.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I Yeah, i just want I just want to get the game going now. I am really, really up for it. you don't You don't get f FA Cup finals as a Palace fan every day. So I just want to get it over and over, especially after how we've been playing the last three or four games.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We ignore that little hiccup but against City and Newcastle.
00:17:29
Wale Bakare
Bye.
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't bring those. that that they They didn't happen. that didn't that That just didn't happen.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We just ignore that one for a while. That was a hiccup. So, yeah, I just want i want to get the game going. And it's probably going to be the same sentiment for the rest of the week until it actually goes. And then we can just relax for the last bit of the season and we can all go and just relax, go on the holidays and yeah get the last couple of games out the season.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So with that, I think we will take another quick break and then we're going to talk about another final, which Palace could probably either affect or we could sort of have some other sort of thoughts on it.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll be right back after this.

Europa Cup Final Preview

00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the last part of the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Dan Tanner. We're still here with Wale. And we are, as we were just talking about the FA Cup final, it's only right that we talk about the Europa Cup final, who that is going to be So the but the teams this year are Spurs and Man United, which are, as I've recorded this podcast, are 16th and 17th respectfully in the Premier League.
00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as a nice added bonus for one of these teams that have been absolutely shocking this year, they get a eu they get a Champions League spot.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
for being almost relegated, which is just insane. Because I don't know about you, Wally, but Man United, in my lifetime, man United have never been this far down the table.
00:19:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think and probably the lowest I've ever seen them before this is probably sixth, if that. Spurs haven't been this far down the table in, oh, 20 years, probably something like that.
00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pre-Gareth Bale, pre-New Stadium, kind of pre-Harry Kane, that kind of the the perennial mid-table team not quite good enough to push forward.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's just the it shows how kind of bad the rest of Europe is outside of the Champions League spots. the Even teams that are league-wise, their league form is so atrocious that they can squeeze through the European competitions and just almost cruise it until they get to this point.

Debate on European Spots for Underperforming Teams

00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
so But this is also the question, because I'm going to answer you this question,
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think they deserve a European spot? Because this you see this is a rule that they get a European spot. And the same goes for the FA Cup. So there is a theoretical European spot for Palace if we win it.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the question is, do you think they deserve it? or should Or should that rule be taken away and it should be on merits?
00:21:14
Wale Bakare
Well, i don't I don't... When you say unmerit, the merits would be winning you know the UEFA Europa League.
00:21:24
Wale Bakare
Once you win it, you qualify for the UEFA Champions League. that That has always been the rule. Although it's quite sad that you find you know teams that have had terrible, terrible season you know ah ah finding themselves in the final and you know you could find... us a team like Nottingham Forest, who sadly we saw what happened you know in their game against Leicester on Sunday, who might miss out on the Champions League, finishing maybe sixth in the league. And there there could be one of the guys finishing 16, 17, or maybe 15, whatever they finish qualifying for the Champions League. But it's the rule.
00:22:03
Wale Bakare
They have been... good in Europe. As bad as United have been, they were a bit lucky, though, to you know come back against Olympic Lyon.
00:22:15
Wale Bakare
But you know they had the belief and kept going in and ah got the goals. But They've been good against a lot of sides. They practically demolished Real Betis.
00:22:28
Wale Bakare
Oh, sorry, Athletic Club Bilbao and Betis are in the final of the Europa Conference League. They practically destroyed Athletic Club Bilbao, who I think are fourth, if I'm correct, in La Liga.
00:22:42
Wale Bakare
and And United you know just...
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
think something like that, point something like that, yeah.
00:22:44
Wale Bakare
Yeah. And United just destroyed them all in a way. So it's not just that Europe europe has been bad, it's that the Premier League is that difficult and unpredictable because If not for you know the very poor season that Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have had, I think Leicester and Ipswich have 22 points thereabout.
00:23:08
Wale Bakare
If that wasn't the case, maybe them United might be closer to the relegation battle as well because they don't even have the much talked about 40 points that you need to be safe.
00:23:22
Wale Bakare
Maybe they will get it eventually, but they've been that poor. They can end up under 40 points. you know this season both united and and and spores so the the league is difficult the league is unpredictable ipswich yeah they've uh they've not been great but they've you know i think they did beat tottenham at a point uh this season southampton southampton were close to
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they'd be both of them. I think they'd be both.
00:23:50
Wale Bakare
Yeah, so so Southampton were you know close to getting a shock result at Old Trafford, but lost the concentration at the end and Ahmed got a hard trick.
00:24:01
Wale Bakare
Southampton you know got got City trembling just a couple of days ago, you know could have nicked you know the result. that's the Premier League, it's difficult, but it still doesn't mean that, you know, United and Tottenham cannot go to Europe and and be good, especially in the Europa League, as we've seen this season.
00:24:22
Wale Bakare
With this kind of form, though, it would be a waste of time, except they will be improving drastically next season. With this kind of form, ah Champions League sport for either of them would be a waste of sport because they will, you know, be out in no time with with the quality, you know, the Champions League. seen PSG, Barca,
00:24:39
Wale Bakare
Inter Milan, you know even Arsenal, Liverpool this season. These are the biggest sides in Europe, Real Madrid and the likes. But if they will be improving drastically ahead of next season, yes, maybe. But as far as the question as to do they deserve it, well, that's the rule.
00:24:54
Wale Bakare
It says if they win the Europa League, then they deserve a place in the Champions League. And one of them will win it and one of them will get it. What that means is England would have six representatives in the UEFA Champions League.
00:25:06
Wale Bakare
Is that fair? you know That will be another another conversation.
00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's another conversation entirely, yeah.
00:25:12
Wale Bakare
but my think yeah I think Spain is getting in five places next season as well.
00:25:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
LAUGHTER
00:25:18
Wale Bakare
If Athletic Club Bilbao, I think they're fourth. If, say, I think Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal and Real Betis, if, say, one of the teams that were ninth or tenth in the La Liga,
00:25:30
Wale Bakare
you know, got to the Europa League final and they wanted, what it would have meant is, you know, Spain would have gotten seven as well. So I really think the rules are the rules. it's It's been used over the years, except it gets changed. If it's if it's not getting changed, then either of them will definitely be in europe next season it's good money for them although it's quite sad i think it's unfortunate i i find it unfair not to the rest of uh the continent to the rest of europe or the other leagues i find it more unfair to guys like aston villa
00:26:05
Wale Bakare
know, ah guys guys like Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Chelsea, you know, Man City, you know, and Arsenal, you're fighting for those places.
00:26:16
Wale Bakare
And they're giving us really great football. I saw Newcastle against Chelsea, you know on Sunday. Great football. You know, Arsenal, Newcastle will be playing next week. That will be a very important game. Chelsea will be playing Nottingham Forest soon.
00:26:29
Wale Bakare
That will be another important game. So there's so many important games at the top. But then there's
00:26:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Uh, if it's part of the rules, then fine. But it's more the, it's a thing kind of like the,
