Introduction and Excitement for Upcoming Date

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge, fresh from buying a physical calendar and a big red Sharpie so I can circle the date, 17th May, in my calendar.

Crystal Palace's Journey to the FA Cup Final

00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
With me today is a very happy Dan. Dan, can you con confirm that you're very happy?
00:00:32
Dan Tanner
I have been grinning ear to ear since about, oh, don't know, seven o'clock from Saturday afternoon. ah it also helps, and now the sun is shining as well today. So it's a it's all coming up, Roses. It's ah all coming up, Milhouse.
00:00:47
Dan Tanner
That kind of...
00:00:51
Dan Tanner
Basically, this is what we're going to talk about for the next month. So the rest of the rest of the podcast, yeah, we can just write them off now.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, who cares about any kind of push from 9th to 12th now in the league.
00:00:58
Dan Tanner
Not really, but...
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's 12th to 9th. That's not what it's about. It's about the FA Cup. We're all in. Congratulations, Dan. That is a really special result. So to recap, if you somehow are a listener to this podcast who's not aware of ah what happened in Palace's FA Cup semi-final tie over the weekend, they secured their place in the final with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the Wembley Sunshine.
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dan, just briefly touch on for me how just how exciting is this for you as a crystal palace fan
00:01:42
Dan Tanner
Oh, this is absolutely... I'm just... I can't really kind of believe

Significance of Reaching the FA Cup Final

00:01:47
Dan Tanner
it. like we Me and Alex were having this conversation on Friday as well. just ah Palace don't get to finals very often.
00:01:55
Dan Tanner
We've had one major trophy in 1990, and that trophy doesn't exist anymore. So, everyone yeah, seriously. it was I think it was a... a yeah it's a competition that was because uh england the english teams were kicked out of europe for several years because of a uh and sort of crowd violence and crowds or troubles that enough and palace won i think the second to last one ever and yeah that competition no longer exists um and yeah besides from a couple of uh
00:02:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:30
Dan Tanner
league one sort of what's now sort of the championship trophy and a couple of league one league two many many moons ago we just don't get to finals very often most of my yeah most of my childhood was palace getting relegated or swiping by the skin of our teeth on the last day or the last kick of the season um so to come from that to f fa cup final is just i'm just buzzing i just can't wait for it now just
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:59
Dan Tanner
ah Yeah, um as I said, me on Friday, me and Alex were just buzzing then. We just we just wanted the game to go. We just wanted that over and done with because it'd been gnawing at us all week.
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:03:10
Dan Tanner
So getting to a cup final, every cup loves to do it, but definitely for Palace, it's not, we don't get to

In-depth Analysis of Semi-final Tactics

00:03:17
Dan Tanner
do it every day. We don't get to sort of even get to a final, let alone win it.
00:03:21
Dan Tanner
So just, yeah, let's go. i want to get this game over and done with. The rest of the league can go and Yeah, we don't care about it anymore.
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of all the kind of free domestic major trophies that are on offer in England, the Premier League, of the League Cup, the FA Cup. The FA Cup is the one that's just eluded Palace a couple of times, the one that they've had really romantic runs in.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think, come on, a great opportunity to go for it, exercise some of those demons and Yeah, it's ah it's it's obviously very exciting from a Palace perspective.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
That excitement probably partly stoked by the fact that Palace secured the position in such emphatic fashion. 3-0, really pretty comfortable, i think you could fairly say from the first goal onwards, as much as an FA Cup final, semi-final can be.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
What as a unit, tactically speaking, did the Eagles do so well here for you, Dan?
00:04:33
Dan Tanner
I think it was a little bit of... We pressed fairly high. So whenever they got the ball in the midfield, Walton was there to try and, like, nick a few, just make them uncomfortable. Because even Nketiah got a sort of tackle that high up the pitch. and um It's also that when we got the ball, it was very much of get it down the pitch as quickly as possible.
00:04:56
Dan Tanner
It was one pass, one or two passes, very quickly forward.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:05:01
Dan Tanner
Well... villa had more of the possession but they were trying to almost not oh quite make the perfect goal but they were playing possession football they were trying to sort of control the pace and everything like that when palace got the ball even if it was in their 18-yard box or the halfway line whatever it was go forward immediately there's no hanging about we need to get them get get it out of our area as quickly as possible and every single time palace were just had the numbers And it worked as we got two screamer goals and Sarr sort of quite literally beating the defender for pace, even though he had 10-yard head start.
00:05:43
Dan Tanner
And it's just like, had a 10-yard head start and Sarr still beats him to the ball. And he's just hang on a minute. He's been playing for 107 minutes at this point.
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:53
Dan Tanner
And he's still going.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sometimes you're as fast as you believe you are.
00:05:55
Dan Tanner
And it's just sort of...
00:05:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel there were running through quicksand by that point in the match.
00:05:58
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:02
Dan Tanner
Yeah. And for all the the quality that Villa have on their team, we just nullified all of them.

Key Player Performances and Defensive Strength

00:06:09
Dan Tanner
Like, Rodgers was kept largely quiet except for the first 15, 20 minutes where he started to get a couple of so kind of couple of passes in, kind of ah move around the the the defense a little bit. But Ollie Watkins was completely and utterly neutralized. no i don't I don't even think he touched the ball.
00:06:28
Dan Tanner
If he did, it was so sporadic. And just all of their top quality, all these players that have played for big clubs, uh, Incensio is one of the ones that I kind of was kind of wary of, kept him quiet and just completely, utterly nullified every single one of their players.
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i think you're you're completely right there dan there's um it's a blend of two things Palace's great result there, great performance.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Defensively, there's a really good article in The Athletic that was published a couple of days ago just after the result, which kind of pictographically demonstrates the way they use their press to just funnel the ball Not always to win the ball back. Palace did win the ball back with the press in really dangerous positions a couple of times.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
That leads to Saar's second... Well, Saar's first goal, Palace's second goal. And it also leads to a goal being ruled out for John Flippertes, which think probably shouldn't have been, um where he's just a counter-carring deal with the press that he's putting on him and nicks from the halfway line and goes and converts.
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But more important than that, potentially... Their press was funneling the ball out to the fullbacks and wide areas for Villa every time, which meant it was very difficult for them to play through to their talented, creative players, Yusensios and Morgan Rodgers, who like playing much more narrow. They're really load of attacking midfielders rather than wingers.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
They just couldn't get the on the ball in those areas where They can be dangerous and where teams can hurt Palace if they can play the ball through. We've seen that this season. and But yeah, it was a masterclass from that entire attacking unit, attacking seven for Palace pressing-wise.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've done some things very well defensively as well for nullifying Watkins, which I will get onto briefly in another part of this discussion.
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for now... We'll a little break for a word from our sponsors before continuing by giving shouts to the individual players we think play the biggest part in this most glorious of days.
00:09:38
Dan Tanner
yet again technical difficulties i gotta work on that advert man
00:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
We always like to roll that one through twice.
00:09:43
Dan Tanner
yeah
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Which players, and as promised before the break, still out for you? Who were the key men in this one?
00:09:53
Dan Tanner
well one you gotta get it give it a little bit to saw when you get two goals and assists you can't be really ignored because because i was watching the the the game for the first
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:10:05
Dan Tanner
20 minutes or so, he looked really quiet. He really didn't touch the ball. He really wasn't getting into it. And then suddenly he gets up a bit of pace and a bit of space to create the goal for Eze, which is a fantastic goal, by the way, and his celebration afterwards and just sit standing there like, yeah, all right.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:25
Dan Tanner
But Sarf was just, yeah, for the first, as I said, 20 minutes or so, didn't do anything or didn't look like he was doing much and very much out the game.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep
00:10:34
Dan Tanner
And then, yeah, just any turn of pace, he had Villa to rights every single time. does day Just a sprint and nobody could really kind of touch him when he had the ball at his feet in sprinting.
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and like
00:10:47
Dan Tanner
um Eze for the first sort of half-ish or so was good, especially the goal, which I just mentioned, which was one hell of a strike. just This is ah the thing where I may have criticized him at the beginning of the season for doing.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:01
Dan Tanner
but you do it in an fa cup semi-final you are i tip my cap to you uh wharton was really solid in midfield as well so these one touch passes uh to sort of the attacking players to start to kamada to sa when he needed to it was it wasn't dillying on the ball or anything like that just he knew who to give it to and when uh bossed the midfield when it came to defending as well he made sure that their midfield, Nubi was there.
00:11:33
Dan Tanner
He pressed them high.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:11:34
Dan Tanner
got He also tracked back as well. um And generally, of the entire defensive unit, I think I've got to give credit to as well because it's the first time in several weeks that we've had all of them available.
00:11:49
Dan Tanner
And it showed the the the difference having all of them there compared to the last few weeks where one's been out through either a short-term injury or a suspension here and there.
00:12:00
Dan Tanner
um and then lastly you've got to give another shout out to hendo some of those uh saves last ditch saves um palming them off uh just absolutely so what he's been doing all season really and just of yet again doing it on a yet another bigger stage you've always got to do now is do it one more time and probably become a palace legend he will be sort of be up there with speroni
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:29
Dan Tanner
pretty soon if he carries on

Role of Fans in Energizing the Team

00:12:31
Dan Tanner
like this. So I know you said key players, but it's pretty much the entire team. It was almost faultless.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah I think that's fair. Everyone does... exactly what was required of them really, really well in this game. And and they need to, to beat a team of Villa's quality, that resoundingly, everyone has to be on it. And and they really were, including ah John Filipe Mateta, who had the unfortunate penalty miss. I thought he was outstanding outside of that in the game.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So i mean all of them deserve bags of credit as you've given them. I think you're right to credit the defensive unit as a whole,
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Individually in that, if you had a single one out for Praede, the guy I'd like to give bit of um credit to is Maxence Lacroix, who I think played his role absolutely perfectly and in doing so provided a great advert for that sweeper, that libero you want be telling about it, and the three at the back.
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Basically, he was clearly free all game to just follow all Olly Watkins' runs into the channels, stick with him, didn't have to worry about Olly Watkins pulling him into a position which would create space for another player rushing on because that's the benefit of off that kind of free-to-back system. You've still got two centre-backs there to mop up anything else and keep on the other runs.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he was clearly tasked with just keeping Watkins quiet marshalling those runs into the channel channels that Watkins makes that cause so much problem ah for so many teams he just did it brilliantly just he completely neutralised him I don't mean you could get on the ball at all um and if you can shut that down as a kind of
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
potential long out ball that Villa have and shut down the avenues to play into the feet of your players like Rodgers, like i mentioned earlier.
00:14:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a pretty masterful performance for yeah nullifying an effective, talented team with diverse ways of getting at you, attacking you.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's really brilliant for Palace to neutralised all of Villa's diverse set of weapons and think the quads does lot credit for his role in that.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Someone else, I think Kamada quietly had a really good game. Again, someone who's been criticised at times past this season really hasn't made any spot his own and we've questioned whether he can play that central midfield role. I think his more recent performances in that position suggests he absolutely can and he's good in this one um you know palace did not win this game by dominating the ball but he made 90 of his passes um competed or four dribbles was basically a really reliable
00:15:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
tidy out ball every time the Palace needed it every time they were under pressure from Villa and couldn't kind of get along or out wide he was a super reliable player to take the ball and shuttle it away so I think he was he was kind of understatedly pre-excellent in this match also is this is Difficult question for us to answer, perhaps. Neither of us were in the stadium, unlike Alex, who was able to enjoy it ah from Wembley seats.
00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
How big a role, though, do you think the atmosphere created by the Palace fans played in turning this into such a kind of confident, one-sided performance?
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, Wharton was saying after the game that it was almost... In some ways, it was almost inhibiting them because it was so loud they couldn't really communicate on the pitch. But it sounded like it was a home game if Southhurst was twice the size or something like that. really didn't hear much from Villa from the first goal onwards.
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think that would have been important in seeing Palace through such an emphatic win?
00:17:14
Dan Tanner
I... You probably put a little bit on it, definitely, because you've still got to remember that Wembley is in London, so for Palace fans to get down there, it's not that big of a deal.
00:17:26
Dan Tanner
So they probably went down there even when they didn't have a ticket.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:17:29
Dan Tanner
They would have gone down there and been ah in and around Wembley, probably, and just sort of ah so trying to soak up some of the atmosphere of it. And Palace fans...
00:17:41
Dan Tanner
We're always loud. We don't mind. We're just going to be loud, obnoxious, vocal at everybody. So it's also, it's been a thing for, ah sellers part for the last few years of we just create this like almost wall of noise that, uh, teams don't like playing sellers park. Cause I've done a plenty of these, uh, crossovers and one or two of them, like the, particularly the, uh, the bigger teams like Arsenal.
00:18:05
Dan Tanner
So said he hated going to sell us part because it's just a aggressive, atmosphere there just not like you know if you went down millwall something like that when that's proper aggressive but we like to make things like loud and uncomfortable for sort of the uh the opposition so going to wemberley and doing exactly that i'm not surprised in the slightest so um we also travel fairly well as well so uh there are the the guys that will go up and down the country doing exactly the same thing
00:18:38
Dan Tanner
uh we've also i think we're one of if not the only that kind of have an ultras scene i know it's not it's not quite like the italian ultras that are really like but um it's ones that sort of are the fanatic like yes we're not quite like the ones on the continent that have got slightly bad reputations but um uh we've just got yeah we've got i think we're one of the only ones that have that kind of
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, like a European style.
00:18:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's not entirely bad thing, that.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:19:04
Dan Tanner
ah group in the premiership so theres these guys are always chanting are always up for it and regardless of a winning or losing they are going to be vocal so it probably helped it also helps going up 2-0 fairly sort of quickly after something bad has happened so the mateta one that we were talking about that it wasn't wasn't given which probably should have been we get 30 seconds later is a scores
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah

Resilience and Mental Strength of Crystal Palace

00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:34
Dan Tanner
we get a penalty which meteta misses about a minute later sas scores so it helps when of the the bad bit is very very quickly forgotten about when something else happens and so you can't take away the crowd but it's definitely uh there was probably a little bit of that in it
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was impressive, I think. from a sports psychology point of view for Palace. We've had a few games recently where things have started to go wrong and they've just compounded ended up conceding five, getting pumped because everyone's heads have gone. They really didn't here when...
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, one of those moments of misfortune, a goal perhaps unfairly ruled out, penalty missed. But for all them, they just responded really quickly and really well. um No one can chop their heads for a moment. And you saw that soon as like, Mateta missed the penalty, as they run straight over to him and just sort like, pats on the back and goes go again. And there's like, you can see still,
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
full of kind of positive energy. can tell he's not concerned at all. He's just like, ah write it off, we'll get another chance. um And that was, yeah, brilliant, I think. um Really impressive from Palace, whether that's, I don't know, they've said in the week, if it's the culture Glaston's created over the years, if it's in part because of the atmosphere in the stadium, I i don't know.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's it's, yeah, it was very, very, Very impressive achievement to put themselves up like that.

Speculation and Anticipation for the Final

00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll have a quick break now and wrap up with some other more reflections and a little bit on Palace's opponents in the final.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So ah Palace's opponents on the day we now know it will be ah Manchester City, who beat Forest 2-0 in the other semi-final on the Sunday.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
What kind of chance do Palace have of beating Guardiola's £1 billion highly decorated super squad down in this one?
00:22:10
Dan Tanner
Oh, I think we have a chance, but I don't think it's a Unlike sort of Villa where until they're slightly closer. City are, well, obviously they are ah i probably one of the better teams in the Prem and they've started to really sort of kick into high gear recently.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Yeah.
00:22:27
Dan Tanner
um But this is the FA Cup.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:31
Dan Tanner
Form and all this stuff goes out the window. It's like, it's a rule of thumb. um so I'm up for it. I wanted City when we got to the quarterfinals, when we were playing Fulham. I think I remember saying, i want City at some point in this tournament.
00:22:46
Dan Tanner
i want the I want to take on the big dog. I want to take on the favourites and see see how we can go toe-to-toe with them. Because this season, know we've got...
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, definitely.
00:22:55
Dan Tanner
Yeah. I know we got beat by them quite recently. They put five past us fairly comfortably. but But before Christmas, we did get a 2-2 draw on them. So...
00:23:07
Dan Tanner
you You know, we we're not completely in the realm of we can totally win this. We're not going to. It's going to be a slog. It's going to be an uphill fight from minute one.
00:23:19
Dan Tanner
um And there's loads of other little storylines of like Kevin De Bruyde is probably last game. There's probably a lot of these players that are going to be sort of on the way out next season. So they'll want to sort of get a send off.
00:23:35
Dan Tanner
and things like that so we could upset a few people there we can sort of ah change the storyline there but it's going to be fun let's say that much um yeah
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I think it's tongue-in-cheek to ask that question with a suggestion of the odds being stacked against Palace, which um on paper they always will be against the City, but they've been so fallible this season.
00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Their defence has been really poor. um You never quite know which city is going to turn up. We've seen that first-hand from Palace this season that if all of their superstars click if they're in rhythm they're pretty hard to live with pretty hard defend that said in that last game we shouldn't forget that Palace went 2-0 and very nearly 3-0 on your very marginal side call stopped that up within 20 minutes and there are opportunities against City Forest could easily have won that semi-final they missed a plethora of chances so up I think it's you know it's on
00:24:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely. We'll see how City perform in the coming weeks. They might suddenly look like a treble winning super team they once were. But right now, absolutely, Palace have a chance. I think it guarantees a semi-watchable ah FA Cup final.
00:25:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see. It might ground to a 0-0 now. But
00:25:05
Dan Tanner
Semi-watchable. Come on, you're going to be... can't call it semi-watchable. This is going to be...
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:25:12
Dan Tanner
It could be a classic or it could be a rap. This is going to be... Oh, this is going fun.
00:25:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I mean, Forest, I think, i think Forest Palace and all the like, it ends up nil-nil. Both teams take the kind of roll of the dice as penalties. And City are just so, so defensively poor this season that the li only only thing they can do is try and outgun their opponents.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think it will be an open, high-octane game. um And yeah, ah one that Palace have every chance of winning.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
To wrap things up then, Dan, can you tell me sort of where this ranks for you as a Palace fan in your lifetime in your most enjoyable victories, this FA Cup semi?
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it right up there? Is it top?
00:26:03
Dan Tanner
um It's pretty much right up there because the other ones we've kind of, we weren't quite as dominant and our seasons have been sort of like bottom end of the table and never really sort of do anything. But this season we've had our insane runs. We've got a plethora of top quality players.
00:26:20
Dan Tanner
ah The last sort of time we were in the FA Cup, it was not exactly, I wouldn't luck was a bad thing, but we did get a lot of lower league teams, which
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.

you It wasn't a team had the same kind of faith in to do something. Yeah.

no we were very very reliant wilfred zaha to kind of do most of the work and so this one i think is definitely up there with one of the sort better sort fa cup runs

so uh and just sort the way we've done it as well we've had multiple ones where we've just cruised past teams like doncastle we we you and me did that one that was two nil relatively cruised we did fulham which much like the display against villa was practically perfect there was virtually no fault in what we did and just absolutely dominated the game so it's definitely the best FA Cup run I've ever seen in my lifetime.

that's a nice place to leave it the um i think you're right, it does feel different because it feels like a vindication of something really good and some really good performances throughout the season and the team being onto something rather than a kind of lucky lucky run built on defensive stability and a couple of super talented players. I think this does feel like it's got a stronger foundation and and that makes it more exciting.
