Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the daily palace podcast. I'm Joe lodge your host for today with me for the first time in a while is the great while they, while they back away. How you doing? well they
00:00:24
Wale Bakare
All right, Joe. Great to see you. It's been a couple of weeks, but yeah, glad to be back. Oh, well, I was on one of the polls with Dan last week, so glad to be back with you anyway.
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I haven't seen it, um, regardless of the listeners have or not.

Match Highlights: Palace vs Nottingham Forest

00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, So, on Monday night, Palace drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest in front of a jubilant Southhurst Park, still basking in the glory of Palace's FA Cup semi-final victory the previous week.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Eagles drew first blood against Nuno's Champions League chasers with an SA penalty in the 60th minute for Forrest hit back just four minutes later, though.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Murillo steering in a mishit shot from Neko Williams. New York Jets owner and prospective Crystal Palace owner, Woody Johnson, watched all unfold as he contemplates becoming the funniest named man in football since Dick Advocate.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wale, how did Palace play on this one? Is that a fair result, the draw?
00:01:32
Wale Bakare
Yeah, was. Although I know Nottingham Forest were open for three points, especially with how things have gone for them in the last couple of weeks. They looked like they were
00:01:45
Wale Bakare
They were the way in the driver's seat of that Champions League race and they looked like they were definitely going finish third. There was a time when they looked closer to Arsenal than they were to the other guys below them. But football and the Premier League happened and and all of a sudden they find themselves sixth.
00:02:03
Wale Bakare
and Yeah, so they they wanted three points, although I think they still have their...
00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:02:08
Wale Bakare
I can't remember, but I remember looking at the table and thinking they still have their fate in their hands. I think if they win their final three games, they still qualify for the Champions League. But, yeah, it was a fair result.

FA Cup Semi-Final Victory Significance

00:02:21
Wale Bakare
You can't necessarily say... either of the side maybe should have edged it um palace just as you mentioned you know uh still basically in the furia of the um e fa cup semi-final uh result and that was a season defining moment for palace i think we for For the last couple of weeks now, we've had a very good idea of where the Premier League season will end for Palace, even though we've kind of, you know, played around with the idea of if Palace keep winning games and the other teams above them drop points, maybe Palace can get into, you know, the European conversations via the Premier League. But realistically speaking, we've always known what the, you know,
00:03:12
Wale Bakare
um The Premier League situation was going to be for Palace. So the the FA Cup, once Palace got to the quarterfinal and then got a date at Wembley for the semi-final, the FA Cup became the essence of the season for Palace and that that victory in the semi-final was so important.
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks.
00:03:34
Wale Bakare
I was, you know, it's funny, I i was thinking about what was game this weekend, Liverpool-Chelsea, Chelsea winning 3-1, and I thought it's a bit unfair, you know, to the other teams vying for the league, I mean, for the Champions League places alongside them, because they got to play Liverpool, I'm sure one or two of the players were still having a couple of drinks from winning the league the previous

Post-FA Cup Focus Challenges

00:03:57
Wale Bakare
week.
00:03:57
Wale Bakare
So um I'm sure a couple of, maybe no one would admit to it, but I'm sure a couple of Palace players would still really been enjoying the fact that they got that victory at Wembley. so but it's it's And it's not very easy.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks.
00:04:12
Wale Bakare
we and I know footballers talk about it, talk about, you know, getting the mind and the other their brains back to the next game and you know just focusing on the next game. But it it can be difficult you know sometimes. we've We've all been there, maybe not as footballers, but When you have a big win, it's quite difficult for you to and we just get into the next one. So I think it was a game that came against Forest was one where either of the side really pushed too much for it.
00:04:44
Wale Bakare
Forest didn't do enough to get three points away from home. Palace didn't do enough to but into three points. So I think it was a fair result overall.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I think you're right highlight kind of impressive the intensity they were able to bring in after such a big performance, such a big win, possibly big celebrations, we don't know.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and i feel yeah it was a pretty good performance, at least good value for draw. Could maybe have had even even more. If either team was going to edge it and win on the day, I think it would have been Palace. They were probably narrowly the better side.
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
The thing that struck me and kind of excited me about it was what a good job they did of breaking Forrest down when they were sitting deep. because they're obviously not ideal opponents for Palace who like to hit teams who press high, whose lines are quite high on the counter and get out of the jugular when they're vulnerable and turn ball over. And Forrest really...
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
protect against that well um and Palace kind of found other ways ah the passage of play which leads to the penalty is fairly patient build up Saar swings in a cross against a pretty deep forest line which is pinpoint spots a really clever run from Mitchell who who then takes a great first touch to win the pen Sarr also had a really good opportunity i think in the first half which came from
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
a lovely interchange between himself, Wharton, Eze and and broke down one of league's best defences, sitting quite deep and think we've seen Palace do that a whole lot this season so that was really encouraging, really pleasing to see.

Individual Player Performances

00:06:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Giving praise to individuals who stood out for Palace in this one, were they?
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oops, sorry, my thing might be on mute.
00:06:54
Wale Bakare
Yeah, I am. Sorry about that.
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
There he is.
00:06:57
Wale Bakare
Well, I was talking rubbish, to be honest. I was saying, you know, was it was it was but the usual suspects, you know, Eze got the penalty, played a good game, created a couple of chances, had a fantastic game.
00:07:10
Wale Bakare
ah you know, so to speak, had a couple of shots. I think one, um well, there were about two that were, you know, off target, won 75% of dribble attempts, you know, that he had in the game and, you know, had some, put some crosses in.
00:07:28
Wale Bakare
We also saw those, you know, long ball passes that we've gotten quite used to with him.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:07:35
Wale Bakare
So he he had a great game. I'm also pleased for Daichi Kamada. He's had a run of games in the squad in that midfield and he's done really good you know so far.
00:07:50
Wale Bakare
Popped in the box a couple of times and he's just held his own in the middle of the pack. and ah It's quite interesting you know with with the with players like Daiichi Kamada, players like Yumin Son, players like, you know, they they they appear the most gentle, they appear, they can watch you, but if you give them the chance, they can, and you think, oh, they don't, they wouldn't get into his crap, but Daiichi Kamada obviously doesn't mind his crap in the middle of the pack, so yeah, it's it's he's umm um I'm glad for him.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:27
Wale Bakare
um Daniel Munoz also had a great game, ah you know down the right. yeah Customarily, as we know you know, going into the attack line, bombing forward from that wing-back position, had a great game.
00:08:44
Wale Bakare
Lacroix, the best of the three at the back, had you know great see as a at a great game. And Esmail Assar had a great game as well. i remember was reading, can't remember what i was reading and then someone did mention, you guys were talking about you know, the bagging signings of the season.
00:09:03
Wale Bakare
And someone mentioned the Smiley Cyrus name. And I thought, well, that that makes sense. is
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:09:08
Wale Bakare
After a slow start, you know, got into the group, gotten a couple of goals, gotten couple of assists, put in some wonderful performances. And for the prize, Pallis got him. It's been, you know, one of those signings of the season. But yeah, it yeah so those those were the players for me. Eze, Kamada for me, Munoz, of course, Lacroix.
00:09:29
Wale Bakare
Yeah, those are the players for me.
00:09:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, more or less the same lot that had down. I think Daichi deserves a definite mention. so Six out of eight duels, one to be specific. Just saying about his... That strength, that steel he's shown in the midfield that we didn't expect necessarily or didn't see at the start of the year. and made some people question, or can of can he survive in a Premier League midfield?
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
He absolutely can. He's thriving it now. Also, 91% pass accuracy. which I think you'd have to say is the standout of all the midfielders in terms of their ability to retain possession.

Midfield Analysis and Contributions

00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not to say is the best passer in the team. I think that would have to go to Adam Wharton, but he's just so much more optimistic with it and always trying to get the ball forward.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you don't always need that. um Kamala's probably the one of all the midfield options you can... hang your hat on and say, i can i can just offload the ball to him anywhere and he'll probably keep it safe. So that's a really good thing to be coming through in the Palace side, ah to have a player like that.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think ah Mitchell also deserves some credit for the game. is just the other one I was going to highlight. More of a game moments from anything else, but he put in a really good cross early doors um and won the penalty.
00:10:59
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was, again, one of his better performances in the final third this season. The element of the wing-back role that not as natural in, but has worked hard on. And, yeah, the kind of performance that's allowed him to keep Ben Chilwell pretty much out of the team, despite that kind of high-profile January signing. So I think he deserves some credit.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we can have a quick pause there to have a word from our sponsors who can turn you into superhumans, the likes of a Mitchell and Daiichi Kamada.

Strategic Goals: Premier League & FA Cup Final

00:12:14
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Back when I was 11 and listening to Avenged Sevenfold, I swore i would never ask this question about anything. But, Wale, were Palace a little too intense in this game?
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
By which I mean, how big a target should that 50 points title actually be? were saying earlier, everything European qualifications realistically probably of reach this season.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
but they could break 50 for the first time. Glaston's making that a big priority to motivate the team. Should they be playing this hard for for those 50 points or do you think they should actually be taking their foot off of the gas a little bit in the next two weeks?
00:13:00
Wale Bakare
it's It's a tricky one, to be honest. um'm I'm sure it's something that has played in the minds of the coaching staff. Are we resting players for the remaining games of the season?
00:13:13
Wale Bakare
Are we you know focusing on the FA Cup final? but When you say rest players, you're not going to wrap them in cotton wool and just stall them somewhere until the FA Cup final.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice.
00:13:26
Wale Bakare
Palace are not playing midweek games, for example. It's getting to that part of the season where there's no midweek game. So the match you get is the odd Premier League game every weekend. So it's not like Palace are playing a lot of games at at the moment.
00:13:44
Wale Bakare
And you also need those players um players want to play football to remain fresh, if if that makes sense. the the don't want to They want to rest, but they don't want that much rest again. They want to be out there on the pitch.
00:14:01
Wale Bakare
They want to feel the intensity of a football game. ah you know They want to get in those tackles, score goals, create chances, know ah keep that winning in mentality out of a very, very big game against Man City.
00:14:15
Wale Bakare
And and that that, I think, will will be the is the approach Glasner has taken. So ah setting that up, you know talking of that goal of getting over 50 points in the Premier League,
00:14:29
Wale Bakare
is one that he'll be saying to the boys, we're going for this, and we're also going for the FA Cup, we're looking to make history. It would be a fantastic season if what we're talking about is, you know, Palace won their first, you know, title, also finished 50 points, you know, ah more than 50 points or for the first time in the league. So but I'm sure we you will be going for it all, and that I don't expect anything less.
00:14:55
Wale Bakare
Yes, there will be some... you know, other things being looked at in terms of intensity, how many minutes, you know, ah you you're playing, how much you're running.
00:15:08
Wale Bakare
I'm sure a lot of the work will also be done on the training pitch as well. um Because it's it's not just about the football games, it's also about how much work, you know, you're doing in training with v situations where,
00:15:20
Wale Bakare
Your managers have said to certain players, you know you train less than the other guys. You run less than the other guys. You do recovery you know more than the other guys. You will have massage. and So all of these things, I'm sure, will be factored in. But you will definitely want them on the pitch, want them playing football, want them winning games ahead of that you know big game against Manchester City.
00:15:40
Wale Bakare
um So, yeah, getting over 50 points, that's something that will be a priority for him as well. Not the biggest, but will be a priority to for him. And it's three games to go. um two wins, I think.
00:15:53
Wale Bakare
um That's six points. Is that? Well, I mean, points, what is that? No, I saw that. Just... but just it like here So two wins and that's 52 points, you know.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I want to say, I wish, no, I want to say 46.
00:16:07
Wale Bakare
So um I'm sure that's something that, ah you know, the boys will be looking to do. But as I said, it is important to make sure that, you know, the guys are playing games and winning games ahead of that FA Cup final against Man City.
00:16:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um I think you're right. It's obviously striking a balance. You can go too hard um and and the risks are on the display against Forest. You saw Walson limping off a little bit.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
You do increase your risk of of losing some real high-quality players. But I think he's basically taking the right approach, Glaston, to try and keep the levels of intensity up. They have got a decent...
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
rest between each game now and fundamentally winning is a is a habit. I know that as a serial loser, ah've ah that's been quite clear to me.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think if they can put a really good performance against a team of Forest's calibre, one of the better teams the league across this season, follow that up with a good performance away at Spurs,
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
They'll go into the FA Cup final full of confidence. And it's also a good distraction to me. don't let the FA Cup final grow too large if you're prioritizing the games in the meantime. So I think he's spot on to keep that attitude of it.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are going to take a another quick break now for word from a sponsor and then wrap up with some chat about things that maybe irk us in the football discourse at the moment.
00:18:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So Glaston has apparently banned all mention of the f FA Cup until Palace beat Spurs again on Saturday. That got me thinking, Wale.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you could ban one topic of footballing conversation entirely, what would it be?

Referee Controversies and Officiating Issues

00:18:35
Wale Bakare
Interesting question. um I really don't want the, um as a PGMOL, the referee buddy, don't want them
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:18:49
Wale Bakare
releasing all the statements about, oh, we made a mistake, should have been this. i don't know, it's just every time I see it, I just get annoyed. um As a football fan, for the teams in question as well,
00:19:06
Wale Bakare
um yeah i know they talk so much about accountability and you know and all of that if you release a statement or if you they're doing so much at the moment i know i don't know whether that still happens i used to watch it the first couple of episodes i think it was the it was called the mic mic yeah and and you know if if you say oh it's wrong ah we we the referee made a mistake like nine out of ten fans at the time you release that statement already knew anyway that the referee was wrong so
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are you still rowing with AR?
00:19:38
Wale Bakare
yeah and as well And the the funny thing is, see, when they then release the statement, I'm thinking, what does it do to my team? What does it do to us? you It doesn't change anything other than you saying you were wrong. We know already about your fix you know things. and you it's okay when you to just basic, oh um even see, well, growing up, you know it's okay when you say sorry for doing something, but if it's something you're going to do every week, you know, you might as well, you know, stop saying sorry, because it's it's annoying.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice.
00:20:14
Wale Bakare
And let see the game between, was one of the games I saw, saw a lot of games while while I was in Nigeria, by the way, it was one of the games, United Bonn Moth was the game. And um Evan Nielsen, unfortunately, went for a tackle, slipped, filed his man, got a red card.
00:20:35
Wale Bakare
and look what I thought, just give him a yellow card and at you know let's move on. um But you'd understand football is also not helping the situation. you know Clutching the leg like you so a car's run over the leg.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:20:50
Wale Bakare
And is it's just weird sometimes when you find footballers rolling on the floor. and all And then with the VAR, it just looks like, oh, that's terrible. That's terrible. Anyway, the referee's gone, given a red card.
00:21:00
Wale Bakare
Evan Nielsen's gone off. Bournemouth, because they've had one man, you know, sent off, had to change tactics, got exhausted at the end of the day, you know, suffered the equalizer, and it was 1-1.
00:21:15
Wale Bakare
Then um couple of days after, red card rescinded. Although there was no statement this time around, but I'm thinking... So now the Redcats has been rescinded, obviously, because it wasn't the right decision.
00:21:29
Wale Bakare
But what does that do for Bournemouth? They've you know lost that two points in the game already. So it's quite annoying sometimes. Yeah, do a tweet. Say your you know was a wrong decision. Or we know already, but I don't know about those letters.
00:21:46
Wale Bakare
you know Going to say, oh, was a wrong decision and trying to explain
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:50
Wale Bakare
why the referee made the wrong decision. you know And it's not just one referee, it's the VAR. The VAR assistants, it's like five individuals who've come together to a wrong conclusion and you're sending me

World Cup Performance Excuses

00:22:05
Wale Bakare
a letter. I don't know. It just annoys me, honestly.
00:22:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um I'm with you. I'm with you. think that's a great show, Ali. If I were Puget Mural, I'd take a completely different PR strategy and just be posting all the time compilations of bad reffing decisions from the past, from Sunday League, etc.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Be like like, look how much worse we could be rather than admitting fault constantly. um My contribution to this, I've got a few that wind me up.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um kind of narrow it down to two.
00:22:41
Wale Bakare
okay
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
One is, to take a quick departure from the Premier League, any discussion of reasons that England haven't won a World Cup beyond being obviously not good enough to win a World Cup.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the hand of God didn't knock us out any more than Maradona dribbling easily through our team of out-of-shape alcoholics. ah Look at the France and Brazil teams. We wouldn't have won it in 98 if Beckham hadn't been sent off.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rooney didn't get sent off in 2006 because of Ronaldo. He got sent off because his decision to stamp on another man's groin. And Germany tore us to shreds and won in 2010. So that Lampard goal wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference.
00:23:22
Wale Bakare
yeah and to I don't... I hear you, boss. It's a bit harsh, don't you think?
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
We just have to get real, man. We have to get real. what We've not been good enough but since 1966. If then...
00:23:36
Wale Bakare
but But you know the things where the thing with cop competitions is that sometimes you never can tell what happens. i remember <unk>ece i remember Greece winning the 2004 Euros. They definitely were not the best team in that tournament.
00:23:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we shouldn't have to rely on
00:23:50
Wale Bakare
So I thought that it happens sometimes, you know.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
that. Yeah,
00:23:55
Wale Bakare
But yeah, England, those english England teams are definitely not better than, um you know, the French team. that Yeah, Germany, you're right.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's fair enough.

Football Debate Saturation and Comparisons

00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't have fancied us against them, to be honest. um Another one that had on my mind all-time 11s.
00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
all time elevens particularly Premier League 11s. i think it's just a pointless intergenerational shouting match between people too young to watch football in the ninety s and people too busy to have got through a game about going to sleep since 2005.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't see who benefits, who's interested, what establishes.
00:24:32
Wale Bakare
You're
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:24:34
Wale Bakare
You're right. You're right.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Waste of time.
00:24:37
Wale Bakare
I think at the end of the day, it's just, you know, especially with the preponderance of you know podcasts and YouTube streams and all of that, you know everyone needs you know content because you you find sometimes, you're you're completely right, bro.
00:24:49
Wale Bakare
You find sometimes the most ridiculous comparisons, one of these days, someone's going to say, oh, who's the better player, Van Dijk or Edin Azad? Because it's it's it's quite ridiculous you know comparisons that you hear sometimes. and I'm thinking, how am I even beginning to start you know comparing these players.
00:25:11
Wale Bakare
And then there's just really, really interesting things that get said. yeah yeah You're totally right. It's pointless, actually, because it's different things. you know as As you've said, if if you're comparing an attacker from you know way back,
00:25:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
right.
00:25:28
Wale Bakare
he had different you know yeah have to face different defenders than now. the The latest one that that's been going around is you know Kevin De Bruyne is retiring and, you know oh, where does it fall in the conversation of the Premier League 11 or where does it fall in the conversation of the best midfielders?
00:25:45
Wale Bakare
