Introduction and Weather Chat

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge, I'll your host today. With me is Dan Tanner. How are you doing, that
00:00:21
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right, as I was saying in the green room. sun is still shining. It's all nice and warm in the country now. so its ah Everybody's got a big smile on their face. So let's start talking

Upcoming Matches and FA Cup Final

00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:00:31
Dan Tanner
Palace.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
The sun is shining and we are gearing up for the biggest match in Palace's recent history, which is now just days away. That's right.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
On Tuesday, the 20th of May, Palace will take on Wolves at home to see if they can crack the 50-point barrier for the first time in the Premier League. But in the meantime...
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a small matter of the FA Cup final. Today, we will get the mood that with a themed quiz, ah talk about the latest ownership news and discuss a departing warhorse.

Joel Ward's Departure and Legacy

00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So starting the stallion, not you, Megan. Palace have announced that club captain Joel Ward will be leaving their club this summer.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
after 13 years and 360 plus ah appearances in red and blue. How much does Joel Ward mean to you as a Palace fan, Dan?
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
What kind of a hero is he?
00:01:35
Dan Tanner
I don't know about here, or maybe a bit of a stretch, but he does have he did have his moments.
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
LAUGHTER
00:01:40
Dan Tanner
He did have his moments, especially, I think, in the ah playoff final. There was a ah clearance off the line. I think in like the last ditch attempt, he does have his moments. I will i will give him that.
00:01:53
Dan Tanner
But um yeah, it's also, I think, it's a, it's kind of a shame. I really didn't know he was actually sort of leaving the club until you sort of mentioned it earlier when we were sort of going backwards and forwards for ideas for this. And it's like thinking back and yeah, he was, he was a solid player. He didn't do anything flashy.
00:02:12
Dan Tanner
Wasn't like, like Munoz now go flying up and down the wing, but he was just a solid fullback that you could rely on. um and just sort of realizing so he'd been there for so long. Like,
00:02:25
Dan Tanner
He played up against like Ronaldo at his peak. Had to try and mark him. we should that That must have been an absolute sort like Goliath sort of feat to try and keep up with him at his time.
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:02:38
Dan Tanner
He's but ah been in an FA Cup final. um the last one we we were we played in. So he's got that under his belt as well. um i also didn't realise that he's the last of the team that got his promoted as well.
00:02:54
Dan Tanner
He's the last surviving member. So, yes. But for me and probably for Alex as well, bit of an end of an era, really. That was a the team we kind of grew up on. So and so we're supporting so back when...
00:03:09
Dan Tanner
so Just, yeah, going down to Colchester on a wednesday on a with windy Tuesday afternoon or something like that. And now we're playing in the Premier League. Got to experience all of that as well.
00:03:21
Dan Tanner
But, yeah, this is a it's a shame. But the the wheels of time don't stop for anybody. So it was kind of kind of inevitable that he was on his way out.
00:03:33
Dan Tanner
he's a the The wrong end of 30 for footballers, which is kind of their time to slowly... So head down the league a little bit, see what they can get. ah Hopefully he gets a yeah a good club to go and sort go to. Hopefully one somewhere in London because I think he's probably quite settled in and around London. So he can stay there. All the best.
00:03:57
Dan Tanner
And yeah, he'll definitely be, don't maybe not club legend quite yet, but a bit of a cult icon. stuff yeah he He was a good player. He was solid.
00:04:09
Dan Tanner
I don't want to use the cliche of 100%, but he always gave everything. And that slowly grew into this kind of leadership and sort of dogged determination that was always...
00:04:24
Dan Tanner
So what Palace strive for, especially when they do their captains, are usually the guys have been there for a while and sort of exemplify this keep running, keep sort of fighting mentality.
00:04:37
Dan Tanner
So he will be missed. He won't the only person we're probably going leaving um in the summer, but he will be missed by the Palace faithful.
00:04:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I suspect it'll it'll leave a ah smaller hole in the team than some of the people who might leave in the summer, as you say, Dan. But it does feel significant as as the end of an era.

Ownership Changes and Their Implications

00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you say, he was the last remaining member of the team that got promoted and was symbolic of that era for Palace and in so many ways that he embodies the guess spirit of that team that stabilised Palace in and the Premier League, which is kind of level-headed, dignified, hard-working, not outrageously talented, but kind of versatile, willing to put shift in and did all the basics as well as needed to, to...
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
never really been any massive relegation danger. ah He was a bargain acquisition, one of the first great Doogie Friedman signings from his first spell at the club, coming in to replace Nathaniel Klein, who is of course still there but left before Palace got drafted. So he really has been associated with the club for a long time.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think it's a shame it's probably the time that era ends naturally really that's probably last summer um or the back end of last year but it's it's nearer that I think people should have a lot of affection for
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
as a sort of separate side note on that, he was the kind of last flag bearer of that period where half the Palace team had great beards.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like John Ward was never the most beardy, but he had that nice sort tasteful stubble. And... um
00:06:40
Dan Tanner
Him and Yadunek and all of those guys were sort of competing on who had this sort of lumberjack beard.
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
did
00:06:46
Dan Tanner
Yeah, I remember now.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
beard era of palace is is is now well and truly over i think um he did say though uh that it's see you later rather than goodbye so i don't know if he's either planning to return to Palace in some capacity after he retires from playing, or if he is envisioning an injury crisis next season, which sees Palace turn back to him, which it's stranger things have happened.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, good servant, deserves a good send-off if it will miss him. Should he then get a run out in the FA Cup final? An acknowledgement of his...
00:07:28
Dan Tanner
Oh, I o ah kind of think he should. It's kind of the the the heart says he should just to get a decent send-off because it's that and also the Wolves game as well being the last home game of the season.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:40
Dan Tanner
I would expect a a standing ovation there, but I think he should at least get a run out. maybe five minutes or so, even if even if we're winning, even if we're losing just so, yep, he gets to in an FA Cup final, essentially. sort You don't get to do that very often because I'm assuming Man City will be doing exactly the same thing for Kevin De Bruyne and everything, but slightly different when it comes to...
00:07:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:05
Dan Tanner
There's a slight difference, but um there is going to be some pomp and ceremony, so why not get Joel Ward in this as well? So why not five, ten minutes before the end just to get a run on?
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:08:18
Dan Tanner
Make sure we're not in the any any d i like ah threat of penalties or extra time. If it's already said and done, fine. Maybe if penalties or extra time are on the court, we might rethink that, but...
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
i say
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
think you're right. It's probably, yes if the game's done in some capacity, if it's still the balance, maybe not, particularly if Jeremy Docky is on the pitch. So I don't really fancy that matchup too much.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, thanks, Joel Ward. And as he says, see you later. We're going to take a quick break now for word from our sponsors and return to speak about the ownership.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been a while since we checked in on the Machiavellian game of the lightly padded seats in the director's box. The latest ah twists and turns are reportedly as follows.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace's largest and least influential shareholder, ah John Texter, still wants to buy out Blitzer and Harris' shares in a move which may allow him to wrestle control of the club away from Steve Parrish.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the same time, Parrish seems to be wooing New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, who he would like to buy the shares of John Texter.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The sprightly 78-year-old Woody is one of the heirs to the fortune of baby oil magnates Johnson & Johnson and is a prominent backer of the current US president. So he's a Trump-supporting infant juicer, but is he the lesser of two evils here, Dan?
00:10:45
Dan Tanner
Well, if it was my choice, I'd have neither one. Just leave me yeah lead the status quo. Because after reading in the and going with the like theories of what could happen... So if Texer gets the other two, um Benson's and Harley's one, he gets about 80% share, right?
00:11:04
Dan Tanner
So he becomes not just majority shareholder, but a significant majority shareholder.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:10
Dan Tanner
which then essentially gives him free reign to do almost whatever he wants with the club within reason.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:17
Dan Tanner
And deaddada so he could quite literally do exactly what he's done to Leon to palace. And just sort of run them into the ground and just keep sort of trying to make more and more money out of them and just run them into the ground to get to administration, which we've already been through that.
00:11:37
Dan Tanner
We'd rather not do it again because the, yeah, the premiership and sort of modern football, that's almost a death sentence. Just our sort of the likes of Barry,
00:11:48
Dan Tanner
in the English League, and Bordeaux in the French, they've been sort of literally you had to start again from scratch. So I don't think Palace fans would probably want to do that.
00:12:01
Dan Tanner
And on the other side, Woody, well, from what i understand from doing a little bit of research, he is not but particularly well liked by the New York Jets fans either, as they have been kind of Well, middling from poor to like middling over the last sort of 20 years of his ownership, something like I think it was 2000, I think he took over and they have not progressed in any way, shape or form.
00:12:30
Dan Tanner
He seems to be just sort of kind of raking in that NFL money. um i think, yeah, he also, from what i've read, he also tried to get Chelsea in 2022, right? when Abramovich was trying to, well, get rid of the club because, well, he was sanctioned, so he couldn't needed to get rid of it.
00:12:49
Dan Tanner
And then also, yes, as you mentioned earlier, famously a US ambassador for the UK on their last ah Republican administration, where he famously tried to push chlorine-washed chicken to be sold in the UK.
00:13:06
Dan Tanner
So this screams for me a guy that doesn't really... like pay attention to the winds of change, either his so but proper fan base or anything. So neither one of them, in my opinion, are but particularly sort of palatable as it stands i would very much prefer the status quo as it is unless there's some other bidder i think because we're always talking about i don't know why but we're always the ones that are talking about the uh takeover i seem to remember there was a bid for from it from some actual palace fans i would very prefer them but i'm not sure i'm not sure where that bid's gone so um
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's, I guess it's just like, text is not actively shopping his shares out anymore. in the way that he once was when he wanted to buy Everton. was one of the black marks against him. As you say, Woody Johnson's an interesting proposition.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like the idea of maybe Kieran the chlorine-rushed chicken as a co-mascot for Kayla the Eagle. That could be nice to be brought from you.
00:14:20
Dan Tanner
Yeah, just sell chlorine-washed chicken in cellar's bar.
00:14:27
Dan Tanner
That's how to lose an audience. Go for that.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But yeah, I mean he's supposedly quite active as New York Jets owner and in ways don't sound necessarily hugely competent.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I mean, this is all kind of hearsay based on an interesting substack that I read about him by a man who was a fan of both Palace and the New York Jets, who was saying that he's reported to bring up the opinions of his teenage sons quite often in meetings by running the club and rejected the signing of a player who went on to be really good elsewhere because his rating on Madden was too low. It's slightly worrying.
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
That said... he his being very active there, heards you could kind of read that two ways. One, he just kind of wants a piece of the football pie and actually...
00:15:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
let Steve Parrish continue operating the club because he's more engaged elsewhere. You know, he's got bigger projects than New York Jets will, you'd think, take up more of his time than Crystal Palace or two that he actually likes being hands-on and that's slightly worrying.
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um From that perspective, it does sound like he could work okay with Parrish in terms of his natural inclinations apparently all the managers that he's well head coaches how they work in uh American football that he's hired uh kind of defensive coaches first and not attacking I think there's something of the Steve Parrish and that approach he's not a lavish spender.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He likes high-profile free transfer. Sorry, but he's not a reckless spender, so those two could maybe cooperate well. I suppose I lean towards the Woody Johnson solution being a slightly preferable in that I think it's the one which leaves Parrish sort still in control really and operating the club and that's why he's pushing for it.
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So even if Woody Johnson's a bit of an eccentric figure, if he's not trying to push out a chairman who through all his maybe being overcautious and winding fans up at times, you have to say he's done a pretty stellar job.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
with Palace. um I think that's preferable to John Dexter, who's hell-bent on destroying the second or third biggest team in France at the moment.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, neither, as you say, they're not inspirational options, are they? I'm
00:17:24
Dan Tanner
You're quite literally just changing one for another. It'd be almost identical, sort of like, uh, work around you dealing with, yeah, these American tycoons.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
going to
00:17:33
Dan Tanner
So yeah, these American, yeah, American sports tycoons. So you're basically changing one for another. So yeah, I wouldn't expect even, yeah, even if we do get Woody and I probably expect it to run very much the same way as normal.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe the tariff wars will lead to a ban on uh american owners and then we can get in a nice sensible uh rich british owner like jim ratcliffe or mike ashley that really uh free to study the ship um
00:18:02
Dan Tanner
Because they work out brilliantly.

Crystal Palace FA Cup Quiz

00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We'll take another quick break there and then return for our FA Cup quiz.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So four questions for you here, Dan, relating to Palace's current and past involvement in the oldest tournament in football. If you get them all right, I have an authority that Pep will rotate harder than that other squad on Saturday.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So this does matter big time.
00:18:54
Dan Tanner
Oh, I better try hard then. ah It's been a while since we've done one of your quizzes, so it might be a bit rusty. Got to get Madge fit again.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Um,
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Only two players, for the first question, only two players have featured in every minute of Palace's FA Cup run this season. Can you name one of them?
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't need both. I just need one one name and you can have the points.
00:19:26
Dan Tanner
I'm trying to... I probably think Gahey, because he's pretty much been in every other game in the entire season. So I would probably go for Gahey as a first choice.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
spot on. Do you want to go the other one double down?
00:19:40
Dan Tanner
Let me try and go for another one. Let me think.
00:19:47
Dan Tanner
um I was thinking the goalie, but no, it's not because they got rotated out of the early bits, didn't they? Probably Munoz then, I think.
00:19:59
Dan Tanner
Is that...?
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I'm afraid not as
00:20:02
Dan Tanner
No.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah it Was that game, was it the FA Cup that Caleb Cabora played in? ah One match. Anyway, is it's...
00:20:10
Dan Tanner
Maybe.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Vincent's speaking his countrymen. is Chris Richards is the other name he is every minute. um But doesn't matter. You've got the points. You've got the points.
00:20:23
Dan Tanner
the point. that's That's it. That's all that matters.
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Crystal Palace, in their original form, has an amateur club reached the semifinals of the first ever FA Cup in 1872. Who, though Dan, did they lose to?
00:20:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Was it a the Royal Engineers, B, Donington School, C, the Hampstead Heathens, or d His Royal Highness Prince Albert and his team of big shorts,
00:20:59
Dan Tanner
I'm going to probably go with the the engineers because one or them definitely sound silly, but these are from the 1910s, 1920s, and they had some brilliant names then. so I'm going to go with the, was it the Royal Engineers?
00:21:13
Dan Tanner
I'm going to go with that one.
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Royal Engineers is correct. That is correct, Dan.
00:21:17
Dan Tanner
Yay.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Donington School and Hampstead Heathens did both participate. um His Royal Highness Prince Albert and his team at Big Shorts did not.
00:21:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a made-up name. um Oliver Glasner will become... the first Austrian to manage in an FA Cup final on Saturday.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who became the first manager from their country to manage an FA Cup final back in 2021?
00:21:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can give you multiple choice on this.
00:21:58
Dan Tanner
I think yes, because I was sort slightly... Yeah, go go do multiple times.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so multiple choice.
00:22:04
Dan Tanner
I'll narrow it down a bit.
00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got ah Thomas Tuchel, Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte, or Jurgen Klopp.
00:22:18
Dan Tanner
think it's probably Conte. I'll see who I was at.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Conte a final answer. 2021.
00:22:23
Dan Tanner
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Spanish one yeah, go for Conte.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
train' what he want
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm afraid it was Thomas Tuchel.
00:22:35
Dan Tanner
It was too cool.
00:22:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
The first German? I was bit surprised by that.
00:22:38
Dan Tanner
It was the first German, because you had two Germans there, so was hang on a minute. it and Either one of them.
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:22:46
Dan Tanner
It's what threw a video. Hang on, there's two of them there.
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I believe on the Conte point, ah there's always a couple of Italians. I don't know if like anyone like Vialli or Ranieri ever got to one, but
00:22:57
Dan Tanner
in my opinion or even Dima tag.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
seven
00:23:00
Dan Tanner
There were Chelsea had a few, Chelsea had a few Italian managers over the years.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
that um
00:23:05
Dan Tanner
So, uh, yeah.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um anyway that's okay and risk of hard and playing now but still a good performance two out of three can we make it three out of four with this final question
00:23:07
Dan Tanner
So, yeah.
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the early 20th century, the Crystal Palace Stadium, where, coincidentally, Crystal Palace also played, was the venue that hosted the FA Cup every year.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who plotted to blow it up for the 1913 FA Cup final, though, Dan? Was it Kaiser Wilhelm, Lenin, the suffragettes,
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Guy Fawkes, or everyone's favourite explosive striker, booming jump for the assessor.
00:23:58
Dan Tanner
I'd love it to be Mateta, but that would be a little bit far-fetched. ah Unless he's a time traveller. But that is not that is not confirmed.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Doctor Who.
00:24:08
Dan Tanner
um as We want him to be a time traveller. But I think it's... I would probably think it's the suffragettes. It sounds like that kind of era and it sounds like one of the ah the big sort of spectacle sort of things that they want to try and get their sort of get there move movement across kind of thing..........
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spot on. It was the suffragettes. um Lenin and Kaiser Wilhelm presumably had bigger things on their plate than Guy Fawkes had long since retired from bomb plotting.
00:24:44
Dan Tanner
had a problem of not being alive, yeah.
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had three out of four, Dan. That was pretty good. That was a pretty good showing there. I guess.
00:24:58
Dan Tanner
It's either I'm getting better at these or you're getting worse at coming the questions, either one or the other.
00:25:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably a bit of both.
00:25:06
Dan Tanner
Bit bush, we'll say bit bush.
00:25:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Well, thank you very much for joining me today.
00:25:14
Dan Tanner
No worries, always a pleasure.
00:25:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you all for listening. If you've enjoyed it, give us five stars. It helps us out. We will be back on Friday to give our final previews on the FA Cup final.
00:25:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But until then, keep everything you have crossed and think endlessly on that big day.
