Introduction and Guest Welcome

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, Daily Palace listeners and welcome to the latest episode of the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. Joining us on the eve of Crystal Palace's biggest game of the season is Dan Tanner. How you doing, Dan?
00:00:26
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right. just all it's the We just want to get the game over with. I just want playing now. It's been oh so long since we've had like f FA Cup game and we were so good in that last one.
00:00:38
Dan Tanner
And between then, we've hit some really, really bad form. So it's kind of, I'm not, I just want to get it over with now. just want to get the the game going because it's what, 24 hours I think as of recording this.
00:00:51
Dan Tanner
ah So yeah, let's bring it on.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, as Dan says, this time tomorrow we'll be at Wembley supporting the boys. There'll be a sea of red and blue um down one of the ends at Wembley, which is always a special moment.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's given me goosebumps just thinking about it. And yeah, like you said, Dan, the nerves have built throughout the week and we're almost there. We're almost sort of ready to do our part and cheer cheer the lads on.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, it's an exciting time to be a Palace fan. So yeah, today we're just going to touch on you know what it means to be going to Wembley for Palace. It doesn't happen too often.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So we'll look at the kind of occasion there and then we'll do some team news. And as usual, are we'll do our best at score predictions, see how they come up. ah So it's our first trip to Wembley since 2022, where we also played an FA Cup semi-final and lost to ah fellow Londoners, Chelsea.
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And yeah, it's just, we don't we don't go to Wembley too much. I think we've been maybe like four times in the last 20 odd years or something like that.
00:02:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So it is a rare occasion for us to be in like a cup semi-final cup final, you know, playoff, something like that.

Crystal Palace's FA Cup Journey

00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So Dan, I just want to kind of get your thoughts on like, what does it mean to you as a fan of Palace to kind of have moments like this as a fan? What what does it mean to you?
00:02:20
Dan Tanner
Oh, it's it's great to have moments like this. it's um As a top Palace fan, as you mentioned several times, that this doesn't happen to us very often. We don't get to go to cup finals every other year like the Arsenals and the Man Cities and the Chelsea's, whatever.
00:02:35
Dan Tanner
When we get past like the third round or fourth round, it's a minor miracle because we never do it. like I remember for years, we'd get the third round and it'd be immediately straight out the pot.
00:02:48
Dan Tanner
throughout the po you're getting another premiership team. Great. We're right that FA Cup runoff there and then. um And you've got the, I think the last time we got to the final was what?
00:03:00
Dan Tanner
20, want to say 15 or 16, I think it was.
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. 2016. Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:05
Dan Tanner
So yeah, it's been a essentially a better part of a decade since we got to the final. And that was only the second time in my lifetime that we went to a sort of an FA Cup final. And I just, I seem to remember because I was working of Saturdays at that point. And I had to convince my boss to let me have the afternoon off so I could go and watch the game.
00:03:25
Dan Tanner
It was about three or four days from negotiating with him because there was another Palace fan as well that had already taken that day off. So was like, ah can I do it early? can i And so on. But as a sort essentially just says as for the team, it's a great sort of opportunity because, yeah, just an FA Cup run is always good.
00:03:48
Dan Tanner
And for the local area, it's going to be great as well because around here, sort of the South London and proud is a real

Wembley Atmosphere and Fan Experience

00:03:56
Dan Tanner
sort of thing. And just to get some success around this part of the apart part of London is always welcome and Palace are sort of the beacon for that.
00:04:07
Dan Tanner
So just it's just a great thing to go to an FA Cup final. But I know sort of even even the big clubs, when they actually go there, they really sort of embrace it. But for them, it can be a little bit of sort like, this is just a slight inconvenience in our sort of schedule or whatever. For us, it's we want to win this thing. We've gone this far. We want City in the final.
00:04:29
Dan Tanner
ah We just want to have a, we want to get to that final and make it make a day of it.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's it. it says It is massive just for us to to be going. um And I remember when we played Chelsea last time, I was setting off from East Croydon and we had to share with Chelsea fans, obviously, the journey up because most of them live in South London.
00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:50
Dan Tanner
Oh, great. oh
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was just like, it sort of kind of like tarnishes it a little bit. But then, you know, just when you get to East Croydon, there's a sea of red and blue, um which there will be tomorrow, I'm sure, like throughout the day. It just sort of gives you a bit of a tingle. You're like, oh my God, we're actually like well supported. And you you sort of see how big Palace in this part of the world. Like when you see the fans come out in force for a big game like this, you you kind of realize like, oh, actually we are like,
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
we are the biggest club in South London. um Hopefully there's no Charlton or Millwall fans listening. So I would disagree with that, but it is true. Like,
00:05:29
Dan Tanner
Ah, they're not listening. And even if they are, we're in the prem, they're not. Sorry.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's Exactly, yeah. yeah i think there's truth in what I'm saying there. um But yeah, these moments are just why you support a team like

Reflecting on Past Achievements and Memorable Moments

00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace. Like you said, Dan, we don't get to these occasions um much, but when we do, we cherish them and try and make the most of them, even like win or lose.
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know It's a big day out for us. um But then again, like you know we're not just going to show up and let Villa you know run the show. We're there to give them a ah proper game, which Glasner has spoken about.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh pretty much um you know so we're there to be competitive we're not there just to enjoy it um but yeah this this kind of run as well like You know, beating Fulham, I think, in the previous round was a huge result because it is like Premier League opposition. They're probably on a par with us in terms of quality.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So to see them off of a 3-0 win was was was massive. um So, yeah, looking very, very much forward to tomorrow. um I won't be speaking as clearly as this probably due to the excitement and maybe a couple of drinks beforehand.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, yeah.
00:06:37
Dan Tanner
and Between you and me, won't be able to talk on Monday. We'll lose our voices completely. so Joe's going to have to do it by himself. ah
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah we might be relying on Joe and Wale dialing in from Nigeria to help us out on Monday Dan but we'll see and so Dan I just want to want to end this part um by just looking back on on you know those few occasions where we get to Wembley do you have a favourite game or moment um from from Wembley for Palace
00:06:46
Dan Tanner
Joe and Wale.
00:07:08
Dan Tanner
Well, you have to you have to kind of bring up the Alan Pardew dad dance.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you have to bring it up?
00:07:15
Dan Tanner
You have to bring it up.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
but and thirty Yeah.
00:07:16
Dan Tanner
You ah know you put Palace into like a meme generator or something like that, and it's like the second or third thing that's going to come up.
00:07:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:25
Dan Tanner
It's just so bad. It's like, oh, even at the time, it was like, oh, come on, man, you can do better than that. Because I think we and think we just scored, and we didn't like...
00:07:36
Dan Tanner
a minute, 30 seconds to a minute, we can see it again. it's just like, you look like an absolute, I can't say this word. on
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
here We know what you're thinking.
00:07:46
Dan Tanner
um Yes. But besides from some cringy dad dancing, it kind of has to be the championship final where we went up because that was the last time we were in the championship and basically the rest is history.
00:08:04
Dan Tanner
And you've also got to remember that that was this is the the championship when nobody had any money. We've just gone into almost like a whisker away from administration. I think it was either a year, maybe two earlier, something like that.
00:08:19
Dan Tanner
ah Held on by literally the 11th hour. And that team was made up of A lot of players that were the back end of their career.

Crystal Palace's Rise and Current Team Quality

00:08:29
Dan Tanner
We had one of them was Kevin Phillips, which I'm pretty sure was past 40 at the time.
00:08:35
Dan Tanner
Pretty, if he not wasn't, that he was very close at the time and got a goal. um But yeah, our team was made up of yeah guys at the back end of their career and a spattering of what would become the backbone of the team. So you had like the likes of Zaha and Clyde were starting to come through the the ranks.
00:08:53
Dan Tanner
So it's a bit special. um And also the fact that we didn't get relegated but ah the next year, which usually happens to us. As I think I remember reading somewhere, we were the most relegated team in Premiership history up until fairly recently, I think.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:09:09
Dan Tanner
ah So we didn't get relegated and the rest is history. We are now looking at another FA Cup run and sort fairly comfortable mid table with top quality stars that are representing their countries and sort of getting a few England players in there as well now. So yeah, it all stemmed from that, uh, championship sort of championship win.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that was... um like if If tomorrow is going to be tense, that championship playoff was like double the kind of tension. um It was obviously 0-0, wasn't it? And then went to extra time and Zaha, obviously a bit of magic, got penalty. And it was just like... yeah I just ah can't even remember it now, like even though it was, what, 13 years ago, just sitting up near the top of Wembley, just like absolutely...
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to use some for the American listeners, use the term brick in it.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you don't know what that means, look up. But yeah, it's, it's um yeah, it's always nervous, but yeah, like that that team, ah the championship playoff team was unreal. Like Damien Delaney, Yedinak.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Like you said, Phillips. um And yeah, it's, it's, it's mad to think how far we've come since that team. Like it's, you know incredible. And even the last time we got to the FA Cup final, the team then probably wasn't as good as what we've got

Team News and Preparations for FA Cup

00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
now. like You had like, yeah, Johan Kabay,
00:10:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
and like punching, but they're not kind of the calibre of players that we've got now. Like we we're in a better place. um So yeah, I'm feeling good about tomorrow, but we' we'll see how we get on.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
This time tomorrow might be different. Yeah, we'll see. Right. That's the end of part one. Stay with us for part two, where we'll be looking at some team news and having a look at Aston Villa's team as well.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. I'm Alex Waite. I'm joined by Dan Tanner. We're looking ahead to Palace's massive FA Cup semi-final tomorrow at Wembley. um So, looking at team news, Glasner spoke to the press earlier um and there wasn't much change on the injury front. The only news really was that Ben Chilwell was available after missing out in midweek at Arsenal.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Other than that, it's Chaddy Riyad and Decore who are out basically for the rest of the season. um So it looks like, Dan, we've got a full full selection to choose from.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I was a bit worried in midweek because Glasner put out a strong team and I was like, what's he doing? um you know I was a bit worried that might pick up a couple of injuries, but we haven't luckily. um So from the players available, who do you think stands out for us who could make a difference um on Saturday?
00:12:34
Dan Tanner
I'm mainly just glad we have a full squad to pick from because the last few weeks we've had one or other of our defenders being suspended with, well, let's just say some of them questionable cards.
00:12:48
Dan Tanner
But we've been through that a couple of times on this. So we won't go into that anymore, I think, ah unless there's going to be some any more weird decisions from the referee on the weekend. But we'll have to wait and see on that.
00:13:01
Dan Tanner
But... but For players that are going to make an impact, um you can't really go past Eze and Mateta. If they're clicking, the Palace attack is going to be quite so quite effective and quite fast and fast-paced.
00:13:21
Dan Tanner
But I think their confidence over the last few games has been sort of hit a little bit as sort against Newcastle and against City. They've got sort smothered, really. They didn't have much of an impact.
00:13:35
Dan Tanner
um But against Arsenal, both of them get a goal. Eze's was slightly deflected, but it what did go in. And then you had Mateta's one where he's sort pressuring the defenders.
00:13:49
Dan Tanner
And for some bizarre reason, the goalie is all the way on the other side of the 18-yard box. And I don't know why he's there. And he's sort of gifted with this open goal from...
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:14:01
Dan Tanner
what, 15-odd yards out, something like that. So they're probably riding high, getting a good couple of goals in the ah midweek. um And I think so also having the back three, our preferred back three, available for the first time in a good few weeks definitely is going to boost some confidence there.
00:14:26
Dan Tanner
um We've got ah Hughes, I think, is also back from kind of one of many suspensions he's had over the seat season. So that might shore up that um ah midfield and get sort of those long, deadly passes he's been starting to do over the last so

Key Players and Tactical Insights

00:14:45
Dan Tanner
few weeks. So it's it's a great ah confidence boost that for once we have a full squad to choose from, besides from the already established ah season then season out injuries so we'll just have to wait and see really i can't pick on any single one at the moment that can really change the game because almost any of them can do it now um you just have these moments where one of them will do something spectacular just as long as we play like we played against fulham and not newcastle i will be ecstatic
00:15:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I totally agree with you there. um I think having the full squad available is just, it's the first time and probably about, probably since we played Fulham that we've had a full, full, proper first team available.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it is, it has come at the right time and actually it's probably meant that those suspended players like Richards and Gehi ah have actually probably had a bit of a rest in between this massive fixture pileup which I think could help.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I think obviously Eze and Mateta are such good players, like they're the obvious candidates but I think you're right to pick out the back three as a potential like game changer for us.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um just like their understanding Richards, Lacroix and Gehi is amazing. um And, you know, they were key to that run of clean sheets we had away in away games, you know, um recently.
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think they're also like a massive threat from set pieces. Like Richards got on one, ah things at Man City. Gehi scored a couple. Lacroix is obviously like six foot four or whatever.
00:16:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that could be a key on on Saturday to unlocking Villa. um But yeah, I also think like Mateta's goal against Arsenal was like really important because if we come into this game off the back of another defeat, um it's just like kind of deflating a little bit.
00:16:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for him to score in such a it was such a good goal as well, which like the lob. I caught Raya out massively by surprise. It was great. But I think that's just given us a little bit extra to bring into this game, which is

Analyzing the Opposition: Aston Villa

00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
is really important. and But yes.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going to be all eyes on Eze, I think, tomorrow. like Everyone will be looking at him to do something, but we'll see. um Obviously, Villa are ah stacked with quality, done you know Went on a great run in the Champions League, semi-final for the FA Cup and pushing for ah top four finish in the Premier League at the moment.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Who from their team stands out for you at the moment who could kind of cause us problems tonight?
00:17:30
Dan Tanner
Oh, well, I got a little look at their squad just to remind myself because some of the ones are, but they just got quality along the board. Absolutely. They're all their players are sort of, I've been at top level teams one way the other in the, some of the best leagues in the world. So i think nearly all of them one way or the other, especially that, um, sort of a midfield and attacking threats, they are going to be more of a problem that I think we are asking for.
00:17:59
Dan Tanner
so But I think my one that's a real threat um is... it um Sorry, Asensio.
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:18:06
Dan Tanner
you can't You can't ignore a guy that played for Real Madrid and PSG. He's just like, this is he shouldn't be playing for Villa. He really shouldn't be there. He should be at Arsenal Liverpool or something.
00:18:18
Dan Tanner
But yeah, just one of these so attacking playmakers, attacking midfielder, almost centre-forward kind of players. You can't ignore him. He's too good to so be...
00:18:30
Dan Tanner
of given a load of time and a lot of space and you also can't ignore um rashford who's also since leaving that the cesspool that was man united this really weird sort relationship or style that they were playing that really didn't suit him or whatever if it's a back room or if it's a train whatever since he's gone on loan he's become the player that, well, he should be a little bit more of sort of that attacking threat, a bit more creative and things that. it looks like he's been sort of a giant burden has been sort of lifted from him. And there's a reason why I think we've been linked with him. If we lose as a, apparently we are ah on the, he's on a sort of our books kind of a, well, supposedly, I don't know how much you can take into that, but, and then you can't, and then Ollie,
00:19:21
Dan Tanner
Oli's always going to be a problem when you've got a ah top quality Premier League centre forward. There's sort of regular for England. You can't ignore that one either. Our back three is going to have such a such a workout.

Palace's Strategy Against Villa

00:19:35
Dan Tanner
It's going to be a long day at the office for them.
00:19:38
Dan Tanner
But that also being said, we are undefeated against them this season. It's two draws and a so one draw and two wins. One of them being in a cup game.
00:19:49
Dan Tanner
And the last time we played them, I think we beat them 4-1.
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was, yeah.
00:19:52
Dan Tanner
I want to say 4-1, but that was at the beginning of that weird sort of eight, nine game stretch where we were undefeated.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and words yeah
00:19:58
Dan Tanner
So, um it's yeah, we just have to wait and see. But they as was saying earlier, their team is so stacked compared to our one. They've got quality along the board.
00:20:09
Dan Tanner
Not that we're saying we haven't got that quality, but ours are like for like they are good at palace but i think if you put them anywhere else they might not work so well and things like that so yet again we'll have to have to see um i know i'm saying that a lot today but we're gonna have to wait and see what happens uh it's gonna gonna be a long day tomorrow
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you've pinpointed all the the key players, but I mean, their depth at Villa is is incredible. Like, even in midfield, they've got players like Uri Tilleman, too. It's sort of like he's not, you know, like Asensio, I would consider almost a world-class player.
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whereas Uri Tillemans, he's great, but he sort of goes under the radar a bit. um like he's just He's an amazing footballer. He can shoot and score from anywhere, really.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Then they've got John McGinn, who's like a little little power horse running through midfield and a proper leader, proper captain. so I think like like in a lot of Premier League games, like this one could be one in the midfield and Adam Wharton and Will Hughes or Lerma, however, two of those three start are going to have to be on their game from the off.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And yeah, we're just going to have to keep a very tight back line out of possession. um So yeah, it's going to be an interesting matchup.
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I mean, they're at the back, they're not great. They do concede a lot of goals, which I think could bring us some goals.
00:21:38
Dan Tanner
Yeah, at the at the back I think is where they might have a bit of a problem. They're not as quite as stacked, quite as a good, but it so only really works if our attack is on form, which they're kind of coming back into it.
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:21:51
Dan Tanner
But Mateta's always confident. He's got 100%. He's going to go for it every time. So... ah
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i think Sar has had some joy against their back line this season as well. His pace caused them a few problems in both the home and the away games. I think as well, we've scored eight against them this season in three games, which if you need a confidence boost, it's

I'm Alex Waite. I'm still with Dan Tanner. And we're going to cap off this episode by giving our score predictions for the FA Cup semi-final game against Aston Villa tomorrow.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Dan, let's start with you. Are you going bold? are you going to go for it another big Palace win against Villa? are you going to be more conservative for this one?
00:23:17
Dan Tanner
Well, I'm going go for a Palace win 2-1. I don't see it being a classic by any way. I don't expect it to be high flying or ah high scoring or anything.
00:23:29
Dan Tanner
And like you said earlier, I expect the goals to come from set pieces where we've got sort of, hopefully now should have thee the back three, which have all scored from set pieces before.

And I think we're also one of the best when it comes to set pieces from like scoring from them or scoring chances so it's definitely something that villa are going to probably be watching out for and that also being said you've got um emilio in the in the goal who's always a bit of a wild card when it comes to sort of goalkeeping so um you never know which one he's if he's gonna sort be on it or he's gonna just sort of put him a half a shift or something so um uh yeah
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:11
Dan Tanner
um but it's what you've also got to take in like villa are i think they've won five of the last six and we've only won one with two draws in that so form doesn't really sort of go in our favor per se but then it's the fa cup form goes out the window it doesn't a cup game throws that completely out the window so I have to go for a Palace 2-1 win.
00:24:42
Dan Tanner
to we can't We can't go out in the semi-final. That would just be heartbreaking. But we'll have to yeah go Saturday and then go from there.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, nice. I like it. I like it. 2-1. I think it's definitely possible. um Yeah, okay um'm I'm just taught. I can't even make a prediction at the moment. i just um We've started our game so weirdly recently. like We obviously had the went 2-0 up at Man City um and then blew it.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can see...
00:25:19
Dan Tanner
And blew it after half hour, yeah.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, conceded early against Newcastle with 4-0 down at half-time.
00:25:21
Dan Tanner
yeah
00:25:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Didn't concede against Bournemouth. Conceded early against Arsenal. So we haven't really... like You can't really judge much on that kind of like inconsistency. So I'm just going to go to... We'll hold out for like the first 25-30 minutes.
00:25:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Have a little blitz before half-time. And yeah, I'm going to join you with 2-1. I think... ah think this game could be a bit more cagey to start with, but I reckon both teams have got so much quality like to open each other up that I think it will get a bit more end-to-end as it edges on.
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um That being said, the last thing that i want is a draw. but I can't deal with extra time, man. It's just...
00:26:10
Dan Tanner
No, no, we don't want extra time. No, no, no, no, no.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:26:13
Dan Tanner
no no no no no no
00:26:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, this that is just the worst case scenario.
00:26:16
Dan Tanner
no
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I've only seen Palace play penalties once. It's away at Cardiff, I think, in the EFL Cup. Carling Cup, it used to be called. It's showing my age there.
00:26:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, i was sitting in the away end there and we lost, like got hammered on penalties by Cardiff. And I was like, I never want to see that again. So hopefully hopefully we avoid a draw on penalties. But yeah.
00:26:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we win 2-1, if they listen to me and Dan, our score predictions, then we'll be fine. We'll get through to the final and we'll be yeah in good spirits next week. um Right, that's us for today.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
just want to say a massive thanks, as always, to Dan for joining me. Thanks, mate.
00:26:59
Dan Tanner
Yep, no worries. but And then hopefully our voices are still working next week. So it may be the middle of the week ones, but we'll have to.
00:27:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
