In today's reading we will cover Matthew Chapter 4:12-22, Mark 1:14-20, Luke 3:19-20, 4:14-30, and Chapter 5:1-11. Today we will read about Jesus returning to his home town, Galilee, and teaching in the local worship house (synagogue), where he was met with skepticism rather than acceptance. After leaving the town Jesus went to teach at the Sea of Galilee, where Peter, Andrew, James, and John had been unsuccessfully fishing. Jesus asked Peter to row him out a little ways so he could teach the people gathered by the shore and then asked Peter to row them out so they could catch fish. Peter informed Jesus that they had already been unsuccessful the entire night but would do as Jesus asked them. Suddenly the net was so full of fish that they had to call James and John over in their boat to help bring in the net, which ended up  filling both boats with so many fish that the boats almost sank! Peter exclaimed that Jesus should go away from him because he was a sinful person but Jesus responded that he didn't need to be afraid; he just needed to follow Jesus and Jesus would teach him how to become a fisher of men. All four of the brothers left fishing their fishing jobs and began following Jesus full time.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how God gave all of us certain talents and characteristics that He can use for us to fulfill the purpose and good works He created for us to do. Today I will share my own personal example of this: God gave me the name Obedient Witness. I have a high attention to detail and notice things. While this is a very helpful skill/characteristic for me to have in my daily life, God is teaching me how to use it to be HIS Obedient Witness as I read and study His Word to be able to "see" details and then share them with others, such as in this Bible reading event! Like Peter, we need to not be afraid. Jesus will teach you and teach me how to be the person God created us to be so that we can use who we are to further His Kingdom. We just need to follow Him! Jesus will teach us how to be a (fill in the blank for your specific job/skill/talent, etc.) of people!

Condensing Jesus' Stories

00:00:44
Speaker
We are going to be reading out of ah multiple books. this account that we are These accounts that we are reading about today, about Jesus, took place in several of the the Gospels.
00:00:57
Speaker
And that's what I love about this Bible. It takes all of the story and condenses it into one continuous storyline so that as we are reading, we are not confused.
00:01:10
Speaker
ah Different writers gave different ah gave varying levels of detail in these accounts. So it takes all of this Bible takes all of the accounts and puts them all together into one picture.
00:01:24
Speaker
Yay! So easy to read and understand.

Jesus' Journey and Teachings

00:01:29
Speaker
today we are going to read about... when Jesus went back to his hometown, as well as the nets full of fish.
00:01:42
Speaker
We are all pretty much familiar with that event as well.
00:01:48
Speaker
So here we go. Our first event is called Jesus, or first section rather, is called Jesus's hometown. Now you may remember that yesterday we read that ah Jesus had healed a soldier's son And so this is after that.
00:02:06
Speaker
Now John had been teaching in the desert, John the Baptist, and something he said had made King Herod angry. John had told Herod that he shouldn't marry the wife of his brother.
00:02:20
Speaker
And John told about other things Herod shouldn't have done. So Herod put John in jail. Now Jesus heard about this, and that was one of the reasons he went back to Galilee.
00:02:31
Speaker
And he went to live in the town of Capernaum. It was by Lake Galilee. And so Isaiah's words came true. The way to the Lake Galilee is by the Jordan River.
00:02:45
Speaker
People who live in the dark now see a bright light. It is beginning to shine. It shines on people living in death's shadow.
00:02:57
Speaker
Then Jesus started teaching and he said, "'Turn away from your sins.'" Heaven's kingdom is near. People everywhere started hearing about Jesus, and he went to teach at their worship places.
00:03:12
Speaker
Everyone said good things about him. Then Jesus went to Nazareth, his hometown, and that's where he grew up. The worship day came, and Jesus went to the town's worship house, and that's where he always went on the worship day, the Sabbath.
00:03:30
Speaker
Jesus stood up and got ready to read. Someone gave him the book of Isaiah. The words were on a long scroll. Jesus unrolled it and he found a place to read.
00:03:45
Speaker
This is what he read. God's spirit is on me. He chose me. He sent me to teach good news to poor people.
00:03:57
Speaker
He sent me to tell people in jail they can be free. He sent me to help people who can't see so they can see again. He sent me to help people who have a hard time.
00:04:11
Speaker
He sent me to tell about a new time. It's a time when God will save his people.
00:04:22
Speaker
Then Jesus rolled up the paper and he gave it back to the man who was helping. He sat back down. Everybody was watching him.
00:04:34
Speaker
These words have come true today, he said. The people had only good things to say about Jesus, but they were surprised at the way he talked.
00:04:46
Speaker
This is Joseph's son, isn't it? asked They asked. And Jesus said, I'm sure that you will tell me this old saying. If you are a doctor, heal yourself.
00:05:00
Speaker
You heard about what I did in Capernaum, and you'll want me to do the same things here. But here's the truth. People in a prophet's hometown don't say good things about him.
00:05:13
Speaker
Remember when Elijah lived, said Jesus. The sky stayed closed for three and a half years, and there was no rain. No food grew. There were many women whose husbands had died.
00:05:26
Speaker
God sent Elijah to one of these women. But she was not Jewish. When Elisha lived, many people had a skin sickness, said Jesus.
00:05:39
Speaker
But Naaman was the only one God made well. He was not Jewish. Everyone was angry when Jesus said this, and the people all stood up.
00:05:51
Speaker
They pushed Jesus out of town. The town was on a hill, and the people pushed Jesus right to the edge of the hill. They were going to throw him over the edge. But Jesus passed right through the crowd and he walked away.

Miracles and Commitment

00:06:10
Speaker
If you are watching the video, then you see somebody was squeaky on the floor and wanted up on my lap. We'll see how long he stays there. Say hello, Scooby. You haven't been on camera in a while. We get you in the picture sometimes, but you're not usually on my lap long enough to stay here for the reading.
00:06:28
Speaker
If you are listening to the audio, you may be saying, what is going on in the middle of this reading? But I have Scooby here on my lap.
00:06:38
Speaker
yeah
00:06:41
Speaker
All right, our next section is entitled Nets Full of Fish.
00:06:47
Speaker
Jesus stood by Lake Galilee and many people stood around him and they were listening to Jesus teach God's word. Peter and some of the other men who had been fishing were there also and they were washing their nets.
00:07:01
Speaker
They had left two boats at the edge of the water. And there he goes.
00:07:09
Speaker
Jesus saw the boats and he got into one of them and it was Peter's boat.
00:07:18
Speaker
Jesus asked Peter to row out on the lake, and they went just a little way from the shore. Then Jesus sat down in the boat, and he began to teach the people. When Jesus finished talking, he turned to Peter. "'Take the boat into deep water now,' he said.
00:07:37
Speaker
"'Then put your nets out, and we can catch some fish.' "'We fished all night,' said Peter, "'and it was hard work, and we didn't catch anything.' so But we will put the nets out.
00:07:50
Speaker
The men threw out their nets. Right away, hundreds of fish swam into the nets. The nets got heavy with all the fish and the nets began to break.
00:08:04
Speaker
Peter and the men in his boat needed help. So they called for James and John who were in the other boat. James and John brought the other boat to help, and they filled both boats with fish.
00:08:16
Speaker
In fact, both boats were too full. It looked like they might sink. And the men were very surprised to see all the fish. Peter bowed down in front of Jesus.
00:08:30
Speaker
You should leave me, Lord, he said. I am sinful. Don't be afraid, said Jesus. You will catch men after this.
00:08:41
Speaker
So follow me and I will show you how to fish for men. So they pulled their boats up onto the land. Then they followed Jesus.
00:08:54
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:08:59
Speaker
Well, I wanted to give us a little bit of understanding in our reading today. We know how I feel about that. It doesn't do us any good to read God's word if we don't understand what's going on.
00:09:13
Speaker
So Jesus had just started teaching and he was telling the people to turn away from your sins because heaven's kingdom is near. And he was ah first in Capernaum and then he went to Nazareth.
00:09:28
Speaker
So um Nazareth, And way was saying would be just like when Elisha and Elijah were prophets.
00:09:41
Speaker
And you know what I never realized is that the widow in Elijah's story, where ah you if you've been with us long enough for the old covenant, then we read that story. we We read both of those stories.
00:09:55
Speaker
But in order to remind us a little bit of the stories, I just wanted to give us a little bit of a recap on that. So when Elijah had prayed for no rain, as Jesus said, there was no rain for three and a half years. And at first, God sent Elijah to go live by what they called wadi, which was like a lake, like a creek.
00:10:17
Speaker
And when the creek ah dried up and this and the ravens were bringing him food there, God had ravens bring him food both morning and night. Then God told Elijah to go to a woman who was a widow and she had a son.
00:10:34
Speaker
And he said, I have commanded a widow to take care of you. And when he got there, he saw her and he asked her to bring him some water and to make him ah something to eat.
00:10:48
Speaker
And she did, but she said at first, she said, I don't have enough for for the all of us. My son and I, I'm about ready to make the last of our food, and then we will just wait and die because we have nothing left.
00:11:01
Speaker
And Elijah told her that you don't need to worry. Your flour and your oil will not run out until after it rains again. And that's exactly what happened.
00:11:12
Speaker
But I did not realize that she was not Jewish. But Jesus did. He knew that. Now, in the story of Elisha with Naaman, Naaman was an army ah captain, a military captain yeah from Aram.
00:11:32
Speaker
And he had gone on a raiding party and he had taken ah ah a Jewish girl, a little younger girl, ah in ah as it guy captive and made her his servant in his home.
00:11:46
Speaker
And he ended up getting the skin sickness, which we call leprosy. And when he got that, the Jewish girl said, oh if only he would go see Elisha, Elisha would make him well.
00:11:59
Speaker
So she knew about Elisha. And so the the man went to the king of Aram and he said, ah this one this my servant girl says that I need to go see Elisha, the prophet, in order to heal my skin sickness.
00:12:16
Speaker
And so the king sent him a letter allowing him passage to go see the king of Israel. Actually, it was not even of Israel. It was, I believe it was in Samaria, if I remember correctly.
00:12:27
Speaker
And... um and said that, you know, I'm sending you this man ah for you to heal him. Now, it wasn't the king who was supposed to heal him. It was Elisha. So the king got all upset, tore his clothes, and Elisha heard about it and said, why did you tear your clothes? Send him to me. i will heal him.
00:12:43
Speaker
And then he will know that there is a prophet here. And so he did that. And he ah he went over to Elisha, and he stood at the door, and Elisha told him to go dip himself seven times in the Jordan River.
00:12:58
Speaker
And this man was not Jew. And when he did so, he was healed. And he went back to Elisha and he tried to offer Elisha payment. And Elisha said, no, this is not a time for us to accept payment. I will not take anything from you.
00:13:12
Speaker
And Naaman said, may I at least have two mulefuls of of dirt from your land so that I may worship the God of your land. And he says, ah he's and Elisha granted him to take two mulefuls of dirt.
00:13:29
Speaker
And he said, another thing that Naaman said was he said, please let your God forgive me when I have to help the king. And he kneels down and he prostrates himself to the God Ramon.
00:13:43
Speaker
He says, i have to also do so. He says, but I'm not going to be worshiping that God. I must do it in order to assist my king. says, may your God not be angry with me about this. And Elisha told him, don't worry about it.
00:13:58
Speaker
Because why? God knew his heart and he was not a Jew. So Jesus was explaining why are these and things important? That in the same way, although Jesus was coming to the Jews, it would be people who are not Jewish, the Gentiles, who would end up believing.
00:14:21
Speaker
He was prophesying a essentially about that happening. And the people got very angry about that. And what was his message previously in Capernaum?
00:14:31
Speaker
It was to turn your to turn away from sin. These people were not turning away from sin. They were becoming angry. So I just wanted to point that out, first of all, before we get to our daily application.
00:14:44
Speaker
Now, our daily application has to do with following Jesus.
00:14:51
Speaker
So in this story with the fishermen, the fishermen who were fishing, that's a fisherman. That's funny. um Jesus went to ah stood by the Lake Galilee.
00:15:07
Speaker
And he was teaching the people. Now, we know that we've already heard about Jesus having Peter and giving Peter, giving whose name was Simon. He said, I will call you Peter the rock.
00:15:19
Speaker
So it might be confusing. Why did Jesus say, follow me when they were already following him? Well, they were still living their lives and Jesus was teaching, but they would they would come and go.
00:15:35
Speaker
They were fishing at this time. They were not following along with him everywhere he went as a disciple. They were just, ah they were listening to him here and there and they believed in him, but they hadt they were not making him their whole life.
00:15:54
Speaker
And Jesus was inviting them to follow him in in entirety. And so eventually they left their their job of fishing because Jesus told them, I will teach you how to become fishers of men. So follow me.
00:16:09
Speaker
So then they left their regular full-time jobs and they went essentially went into full-time ministry and learning full-time with Jesus. They became full-time students, I should say. They no longer had a part-time job.
00:16:21
Speaker
They now, they weren't splitting their time. They were now following Jesus completely. And so that was Peter and John and James.
00:16:34
Speaker
Now, and think that was James. Yes. So I wanted to point out some of what what occurred in that event. So at first, when Peter saw the great catch,
00:16:49
Speaker
Jesus, ah Peter said to him, he says, you should go away from me for I am a sinful man. And Peter told him, don't be afraid.
00:16:59
Speaker
He said, follow me and you will catch men after this. I will show you how to fish for men. So they pulled up their boats and then they followed Jesus.

Purpose and Personal Journey

00:17:10
Speaker
So our daily application is to not be afraid because we find that we we think that we are unworthy. Jesus has a purpose for us.
00:17:22
Speaker
He has work for us to do. And we should not think. You remember Moses? and He said that he couldn't go speak to the Pharaoh because he was slow of speech.
00:17:32
Speaker
And God told him, don't be afraid. God will help us do whatever work he gives us. And we don't want to be discouraged by the enemy who says, you don't have a purpose. Who are you?
00:17:44
Speaker
You are worthless. you God can't use you to do anything. There's nothing special about you. What is special about you is that you believe in Jesus as your savior.
00:17:56
Speaker
Jesus says, don't be afraid. I will teach you. so I may have shared that one of the names God has given me is that I am obedient witness.
00:18:08
Speaker
I see things and I experience things and then I share them. I share those events. I witness about it. I give my testimony and I talk about the things that God has shown me. And as I like to say, if God didn't want anybody to know, he surely wouldn't tell me.
00:18:25
Speaker
So God is taking something that is the way he created me, the way he made me. He made me to be very observant. I have what we might call a high attention to detail.
00:18:39
Speaker
So I notice things, I see things. He shows me things at work. I find things that are not working. I find things that are not quite right.
00:18:50
Speaker
I find things that are different and say, this isn't going okay. And I bring that to leadership. And i have ah high credibility because I don't just bring up anything and everything.
00:19:04
Speaker
I don't complain about the trash on the floor or something like that. For for instance, I find things like packages that are under the belt ah that have been knocked down and they're not being ah They're not being seen.
00:19:16
Speaker
So those are packages that are going out to people. And that's what's caused a delay in their delivery is that they've fallen down. And God shows me these things. And then i go and I get them.
00:19:30
Speaker
And I i escalate is what the word that they use. And I i bring things to a higher level for the things that I can't take care of myself so that somebody else can take care of them. So God is using...
00:19:42
Speaker
who he made me to be. Now, those are great things to do, but he has also taught me how to be a witness for him.
00:19:54
Speaker
and I never thought that that was something that I was meant to do, but instead, here I am with this event. And this is not something that I could have planned.
00:20:07
Speaker
I didn't know how to do this. I just know that he gave me a desire to read and read this book. He brought this book to me years ago when I bought it for my daughter and another little boy in our family.
00:20:25
Speaker
And I don't. ah My daughter never read all of it, and I don't know that he ever read all of it, but I loved this storybook version of the Bible in chronological order so that people of any age, especially young kids, would be able to read it and understand the story, the big story of the Word of God.
00:20:49
Speaker
And so he put that desire into my heart. And then he's he he takes me day by day to show me daily application on how every day, every reading has daily application for something that we can incorporate into our lives, a little a little lesson for what we can do today.
00:21:10
Speaker
and so he is teaching me. He's teaching me how to fish for men. I'm not a fisherman and I'm not fishing for men. For me, he's teaching me how to be his witness.
00:21:23
Speaker
So in the same way, whatever it is that you are called to do, whatever it is that you are good at, whatever it is that is your talent, God will show you how to use it for him.
00:21:38
Speaker
He will teach you. Don't think that you don't have purpose in who you are because the way that God made you, God will teach you and then you will be that of people.
00:21:54
Speaker
And that is our daily application. I love how God shows us these things. He's very, um the but the big word is demonstrative. He demonstrates.
00:22:07
Speaker
these things to us. Jesus gave us demonstrations. He showed us like when he said he uses what we call parables in the Bible. But a parable is another word for in today's language, what we would call a simile.
00:22:20
Speaker
A simile is a comparison between two things using the words like or as it is like this. It is like that. This gives us a point of reference so that we can take something that we already understand and apply it to something new.
00:22:37
Speaker
It's a great way of teaching. And God has given me that ability as well so that I'm able to see the things that we read about and see how it applies today in our daily lives. And i I'm so thankful for that.
00:22:55
Speaker
And then he has given me a desire to speak it, not just keep it inside, but to share it. I love that. So whatever it is that you have,
00:23:07
Speaker
Ask God to teach you how to be you for him.
00:23:14
Speaker
And he will.

Call to Action and Engagement

00:23:16
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light and to not only light it, but put it up on a hill. Jesus will tell us nobody lights a lamp and then puts it under a bowl so it can't be seen.
00:23:28
Speaker
But instead we put it up high so it can illuminate a bigger area.
00:23:35
Speaker
And so I hope that you feel that way in your life today that you've gone, ah, I know, understand. think I know what she's talking about.
00:23:47
Speaker
And then you you then all of a sudden you you get a spark of of, oh yes, I can do this with my ability to do or my my my tendency to do this.
00:23:59
Speaker
And I'm sure that you have because our God doesn't just give us things to read about. He will then apply those things in our daily lives. He will bring circumstances about that will cause his Holy Spirit to speak to you and to show you exactly how to be what we were reading about.
00:24:20
Speaker
I love that. God is so faithful to do that. So I hope that you ask God about that and spend some time in that. That is my prayer for you today. And that while you are doing that, you have a fantastic rest of your day today, ah either on August 19th or whatever day you are hearing or watching this daily reading.
00:24:43
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow. Oh, and don't forget to click that light button. The one that looks like a thumbs up or a heart or a share button. Because everybody should know that God can use them with exactly who he created them to be.
00:25:01
Speaker
Have a great day.
