In today's reading we will read Luke Chapter 2:21-38. We will read about Mary and Joseph obeying God's laws by dedicating Jesus to God on the eighth day of his birth, as well as offering the required offerings and waiting for the time of Mary's purification after giving birth. We will read about Simeon and Anna, a prophet and prophetess who both loved and obeyed God, speaking with the power of the Holy Spirit about how Jesus would fulfill the promise of God's Promised One who would save the people.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about obedience and the importance in us doing so. Jesus always obeyed God and still does! He only speaks to the Holy Spirit what the Father tells Him and He obeyed God even to die for us, giving His life as a ransom for many. Before dying Jesus taught us that if we love Him we are to obey Him. What does He tell us to do? He taught us to love one another and that if we wanted to be great we must serve one another while remembering that no one is greater than He is. So let us remember to serve and love one another with joy while we obey Jesus and our Heavenly Father, today and every day!

Speaker
Get them out because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:57
Speaker
We are going to be reading a short bit today. It is part of chapter 2 of Luke, and it is going to be covering verses 2 through 38.
00:01:10
Speaker
Chapter 2 is a rather long chapter. I'm finding that the chapters in Luke so far are both kind of long. So tomorrow we will complete the second chapter of Luke, I think. and ah But today we just are reading a portion of it.

The Birth of Jesus and Observance of Law

00:01:27
Speaker
So today we are going to be reading our section entitled No More Waiting.
00:01:34
Speaker
So we read yesterday that the baby Jesus was born and the angels heralded his birth. And now we are reading that eight days later, Mary and Joseph named the baby Jesus.
00:01:49
Speaker
And that was the name the angel had given him. Mary and Joseph had to do what God's law said. So they waited for a while and then they took the baby to Jerusalem.
00:02:01
Speaker
God's law said that every firstborn boy must be God's. And God's law also said to offer a gift. The gift was to be of two doves or pigeons.
00:02:14
Speaker
So Mary and Joseph offered a gift to God. And they promised that the baby would belong to him. We call that a baby dedication and his naming ceremony.
00:02:27
Speaker
It's also the day that his circumcision would have been performed because he was a boy.

Simeon's Prophecy and Reaction

00:02:33
Speaker
A man named Simeon lived in Jerusalem, and he was a good man. He loved and obeyed God. The Holy Spirit was with him.
00:02:45
Speaker
ah Simeon had been waiting for someone special. This person would save God's people. And the Holy Spirit had told Simeon that he would see this special person.
00:02:59
Speaker
And before he died, Simeon would see the promised one. The Spirit told Simeon to go to the worship house. And that is when Joseph and Mary brought Jesus there.
00:03:14
Speaker
Simeon held the baby Jesus and he praised god God, you promised this. Now you are letting me die in peace.
00:03:27
Speaker
I have seen the one who will save. All people will see him, and he will be like a light, God. He will show you to people who are not Jewish.
00:03:41
Speaker
He will show how great you are to your people Israel. Mary and Joseph were surprised at what Simeon said.
00:03:51
Speaker
Simeon prayed for good things for Mary and Joseph. Then he said, Many people in Israel will fall and rise, and it will be because of this child.
00:04:03
Speaker
He will be a sign, and it will be easy to see what people think. And you, Mary, your heart will feel like it has been cut open.

Anna's Worship and Message

00:04:17
Speaker
Now another person was at the worship house and her name was Anna. She was very old. She had been married when she was very young, but her husband had died after only seven years.
00:04:29
Speaker
And after that, she had no husband. And now she was 84 years old. Anna stayed at the worship house. She worshiped night and day.
00:04:41
Speaker
She prayed and sometimes she even went without food to worship God. right at that moment, Anna came up to Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus.
00:04:54
Speaker
And she thanked God. And she talked about Jesus. She talked to everyone who was waiting to be saved.
00:05:05
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:05:11
Speaker
We are seeing that everybody is so joyful. God told a lot of people about Jesus's birth, that he would be coming.
00:05:22
Speaker
He told Simeon that he would get to see the baby before he was born, the promised one. And when the right time came, the Holy Spirit directed him to go to the temple to receive Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.
00:05:39
Speaker
And then right at that time, Anna came and she too knew that this baby was the one who was promised who would save everybody. There can be no doubt that Jesus is the Messiah.
00:05:54
Speaker
There can be no doubt. Jesus is the one. There is no one else we are waiting for. He is the one who was promised by God, who saves us from our sins.

Significance of Sin Offerings

00:06:08
Speaker
I want to talk a little bit about sin atonement. So when Mary and Joseph were fulfilling God's law, they were going first to have his dedication ceremony, to dedicate every firstborn boy to God, as well as to perform his circumcision.
00:06:28
Speaker
But there was also the offering that Mary needed to make. And it says that they made an offering of either... Now what's interesting wanted to point out is that first all, why were they offering We don't know lot about rules offering because we don't do them anymore.
00:06:53
Speaker
why were they offering to god we don't know a lot about the rules of offering because we don't do them anymore We don't abide by those rules.
00:07:05
Speaker
But part of that was cleansing offering for Mary because she had given birth. And so there is blood involved. And so as in the time of her monthly cycle, after a woman's monthly cycle, she would be considered unclean and she would need to go make a sin offering for atonement for cleansing for herself.
00:07:27
Speaker
Now, what's interesting is that they specifically mentioned that she needed to bring either two doves or two pigeons. This means that Mary and Joseph were about middle class because the greater offering, the primary offering that should have been offered during this time was a lamb.
00:07:54
Speaker
So if it says if she in Levites, Leviticus 12 in verses one through eight, it talks about the offering that a woman would need to make as ah as a new mother.
00:08:10
Speaker
And it says that if a woman conceives and bears a male child, then she will be unclean for seven days. As in the days of her cycle, she will be unclean. And on the eighth day, the flesh of the boy's foreskin is to be circumcised.
00:08:25
Speaker
And then she weight the blood she must wait during the blood of purification for 33 days. We would call this postpartum bleeding. She is not to touch any holy thing nor come into the sanctuary until the days of her purifying are completed.
00:08:45
Speaker
Then it talks about if she bears a female child, which is not relevant for us here because Jesus is male. And then when the days of her purification are completed for a son or a daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of the meeting, a year old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtle dove for a sin offering.
00:09:06
Speaker
And he is to present it before the Lord and make atonement for her. And then she will be cleansed from the discharge of her blood. And this is the Torah for her who gives birth, whether to a male or female child.
00:09:18
Speaker
And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she is to bring two turtle doves two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. And then the priest will make atonement for her and she will be clean.
00:09:34
Speaker
So I wanted to point out that we know that Jesus was born and that there was no room for them in the the inn. And so he had to be placed in a manger. And when we sing our songs about that, we say that he was he was in a very humble estate there.
00:09:52
Speaker
Jesus was was born into a rather middle-class family. There's actually a lower offering ah listed in Leviticus chapter five, where it talks about that if they cannot even afford the two turtle doves or two pigeons, that then a third offering possibility for those who were very poor would be about two quarts of fine flour.
00:10:18
Speaker
And they were done as a sin offering and a cleansing offering. So it's interesting to note that they did not have a lamb. First of all, they were traveling.

Obedience to God's Laws

00:10:29
Speaker
And so they would not be able to have access to that, potentially. But they didn't have money to even buy a lamb for offering.
00:10:41
Speaker
They had the money for two pigeons or two doves. So sometimes we can think that by serving God that he will reward us richly in financial means.
00:10:54
Speaker
But look at the example of our Savior. He was born into a rather middle class family. They did not provide the highest level of sin and purification offering, but neither did they provide the lowest.
00:11:09
Speaker
And I've never heard anybody speak about that, but I thought that was very interesting that I wanted to point out. Now, the reason that they were doing this is that they were obeying God's law.
00:11:20
Speaker
So what we see is that they were obedient. Having been and the birth mother for the son of god They it did not excuse them from obeying God's laws.
00:11:36
Speaker
Just as Jesus said that he did not come to be served, but to serve. While Jesus was here, he always obeyed God. And even now, Jesus obeys God.
00:11:47
Speaker
Our prime example that we have is to obey God in everything. Now, one of the things that Jesus ah fulfilled is our sin offering.
00:12:00
Speaker
So we no longer need to make atonement for things like having a baby to be cleansed for our sin offering. or for any other type of sin. There's a whole set laws regarding sin offering.
00:12:16
Speaker
And we don't realize it because we just take it for granted because we don't have any experience in any of that. It's not something that we have ever had to deal with. But there was a great deal that needed to be done.
00:12:29
Speaker
And they were doing it. There was this whole section of time. She had to wait 33 days for male. She had to wait 66 days for a female.
00:12:40
Speaker
and We do still circumcise and and it is very common even in nowadays for Jewish families to circumcise on the eighth day when they have the name giving ceremony.
00:12:52
Speaker
But there is no longer a sin or atonement offering made. And ah first of all, there's no temple to do that for them. But for us who are believers, Jesus paid at that price.
00:13:06
Speaker
We don't realize the convenience we have in that. We are already considered clean. mean Jesus says that we would are clean. So that is a wonderful gift that he has given to us.
00:13:21
Speaker
And we want to talk about today ah about obedience. We see here that Mary and Joseph obeyed. We see that Simeon obeyed. Simeon was a, it says the description for him that that
00:13:41
Speaker
ah He lived in Jerusalem and he was a good man and he loved and obeyed God. And the Holy Spirit was with him. So he and we also have that Anna was worshiping and living at the temple and that she worshiped God night and day.
00:14:01
Speaker
She was always obeying God. That did not mean that either of them were perfect. It just means that they were obedient to God. They did everything they were supposed to do. And Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.
00:14:18
Speaker
God said that he would forgive us of our sins, but it doesn't mean that we are free to disobey his laws. We are still expected to obey him.
00:14:29
Speaker
And Jesus said that if you love me, you will obey me. And we are to love one another. That is the big commandment that Jesus gives us.
00:14:40
Speaker
So loving one another and treating one another well. And he got Jesus ah told us, and we read a few ah weeks ago, that if we any of us wants to be great, that we must be the servant for others.
00:14:58
Speaker
That is how we become great, is by serving one another. Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. And none of us is greater than he is.
00:15:09
Speaker
So we too are expected to serve and to obey and to love one another. he said, if you love me, you will love one another. So these are great things for us to do.
00:15:22
Speaker
We want to be mindful of our obedience. We want to love and serve God and others. So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today with today's reading. There would be no more waiting.
00:15:38
Speaker
We don't have to wait to be reconciled to God.

Encouragement to Spread God's Word

00:15:42
Speaker
God has reconciled us to him with the um death and resurrection and ascension of Jesus, our savior.
00:15:53
Speaker
And that is a wonderful thing. Now we can freely obey and we know that our sins have been forgiven. So thank you for joining me today. If you also feel that God has lit your light, let's do our best to attract attention to God's word and to spread the word about reading God's word.
00:16:13
Speaker
We want everybody to know that it is important to obey God. It is important to obey Jesus. So it is important to love one another, to serve one another, and to remember that we are not better than Jesus or anybody, but that we are ah servants. We are meant to serve and love one another, not trying to place ourselves above one another.
00:16:37
Speaker
So thank you for clicking that light button, whether it looks like a thumbs up, whether it looks like a heart. If you have the opportunity, please share the event. And if you are new here, I would like to encourage you to please click that follow or subscribe button from wherever you are watching or listening.
00:16:54
Speaker
And that helps us to be that light on the hill so that we can Point people to God's word, not to point people to me. This is not my event. We are trying to point people to reading.
00:17:07
Speaker
God's word, whether it is in the day-by-day kids Bible, NIV, Tree of Life, New American Standard, you get the idea. We want to spread the word about reading God's word.
00:17:19
Speaker
That is the point of this event. And to understand what we read and to be encouraged by understanding that every single day has daily application for us in our life.
00:17:32
Speaker
I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you are getting around to watching this August 12th daily reading. And you know it. I will be here for you again tomorrow. See you then.
