Global Sports Podcast Network
of podcast network Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network you as you just heard from that lovely intro.
00:00:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm your host today Dan Tanner and with me to talk all things Palace over the last couple of days, week or so is Wale Bakari. How are you doing mate? It's been a little while since you and me have done a podcast together so a little bit catching up to do.
00:00:32
Wale Bakare
Yeah. yeah it's been a while, Dan. Great to see you. Great to be on the pod. i hope you've been well as well.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah So far, yeah, I've been all right as the for the last couple of weeks. It's been all right. So

Eze's Performance and Impact

00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace have been winning, so I'm in a good mood, especially after last weekend's one. The very normal game up until the last 10 minutes or so, then it just turned into a Royal Rumble.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, right. So this podcast, we're going to talk a little bit about the man of the hour, the man of the month, Eze, and his Maroc very sort of fantastic form this season, well this month really.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're also going to continue talking about the Oliver Glasner saga as a new complication has entered. so And also try and get Wale's kind of thoughts on this because I think he's the only one that hasn't really put any of his thoughts behind it. So let's see what he thinks of this.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're also going to talk a little bit about supporters clubs, Palace supporters clubs from around the world.

Global Reach of Palace Fans

00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I saw this on the the Palace official website the other day where two Australian supporters clubs from Sydney, one Palace and one Brighton set up their own A23 derby the other day. So it just got me sort of looking into some some of the other Palace supporters clubs from around the world.
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And There are quite a lot of them, actually. I was surprised, but we'll get into that in a little bit. So to start with, we're going to talk Eze. Why not? One of the top one of the better players over the last month or so.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
whip Firstly, gets his first international goal, being the second only Palace but palace player to do that. Has got a goal and assist in the in the FA Cup, and has two assists in the league, both of them against Brighton, which that some of them, though those passes were absolutely fantastic.
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Wale, what do you think the the most impressive part of Wale, of Eze's play this month is? What do you think is the best part of it?
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And would you expect very the same over the next couple of weeks or... Do you think some there might be a bit of a shift on who might be the next sort Palace player in form?
00:03:05
Wale Bakare
I really think it's coming to form in the right period.

Eze's Role in Palace's Success

00:03:09
Wale Bakare
I was saying this to Joe on Monday. i you know A lot of times you find players dropping in terms of their form towards the end of the season. But for Eze, he's just picked it up. And it's good news for Palace, good news for Palace fans.
00:03:24
Wale Bakare
His performances have shined through in its performances i've sh through in the results you know for Palace as well.
00:03:36
Wale Bakare
you know you Whenever Beretieze is playing well, it's most likely that the Palace attack line you know will play well. Things tend to go through him a lot.
00:03:47
Wale Bakare
And that that's exactly what we've seen in the last couple of weeks. There was a bit of a debate around whether... he was going to get that call-up by Thomas Tuchel.
00:03:57
Wale Bakare
I'm guessing that must have instilled some belief in him. That must have put some confidence in him because there were indeed players who were in you know good form across the Premier League that could easily have been invited.
00:04:12
Wale Bakare
by Tuchel. And then he didn't get a lot of minutes, but he got very effective minutes in the second game, got a goal against Latvia, his first international goal, totally deserved his comeback and he's maintained the form, as you said, got the goal and assist in the FA Cup and then the two great assists in the game against Brighton. So,
00:04:34
Wale Bakare
it It just feels like, oh is and and we've seen this in patches this season where he did feel like he was getting back his form and then he just filters away for the next couple of weeks. but we we before the international break, we did see a semblance of the Iberitieze that we knew you know for about three consecutive weeks before the international break.
00:05:04
Wale Bakare
And that was what at least gave that a little bit of hope that maybe he could be invited by Thomas Tuchel. He did get the invitation, you know, got the goal. and And

Future Aspirations: FA Cup and Europe

00:05:14
Wale Bakare
since he's returned, he's just looked happier. He's just, you know, smiled more.
00:05:18
Wale Bakare
His body language has been better. His touches have been great. His... you know, gun at defenders the way we know he can, you know, try to, you know, go on a run in the middle of the park, find that killer pass.
00:05:33
Wale Bakare
And that's the Iberi Giese that we've known since he moved to Palace. So it's great that he's back in form, so to speak. And I personally really hope and expect and that this will be the form that will be taken on to the end of the season. And I just really wonder, you know, how far Palace can go how high Palace can go in the league but you would agree that the FA Cup run I'm sure is one Palace Fires will be looking at and saying I don't mind if we finish 12th in the league or 13th in the league or maybe even 16th in the league as long as we win you know the FA Cup and remember the FA Cup winners get an automat get a sport in the Europa League so
00:06:15
Wale Bakare
there's a lot riding on that for Palace so it will be great if AC's form continues and I really expect that will continue to the end of the season.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, definitely looking for that European spot because looking at our schedule, that's probably the most realistic way unless we get a lot of lucky results. But that's probably for another discussion, probably some point next week.
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
but But yeah, S.A., since yeah the this month, he's been absolutely fantastic. He's been pulling all the strings.
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been sort of, well, deadly, really. Like, definitely. Gone are the beginning of the season form where he would take the entire team on himself. He'd try and take a long shot because I was watching the highlights again from the Brighton game and the assist he gets to Munoz.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is a moment where I'm thinking he's going to take the shot. If that was the beginning of the season, he would have taken that shot every single time but without thinking. about passing it but ever since i think it's some way so some point in november or something like either something clicked or glasner had a word with him just to say we need you to be the playmaker just get the ball and just sort we need you to pass it out we don't need you to take it on all yourself there are other there are other members of the team here you can we want you to be the driving force yes
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
but you don't have to do it all yourself and i think that's starting to show in his play he's become a considerably deadlier midfielder when he's not trying to do it all himself and sort
00:07:49
Wale Bakare
Do you think, I was going to ask Dan, sorry, I was going to ask you, do do you think it might have been that, you know, the departure of Michael Olisse was playing in his head at the start of the season and he felt the, you know, the expectation or the onus was on him to drag the team and maybe that kind of got the better of him at the start of the season and he just wanted to, you know, do everything?
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's probably a little bit of that because last season they were quite a deadly duo. So once half of that's gone, he's probably thinking that now I have to step up and do it.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so it also didn't help that Mateta didn't start off that well. And Enketiah, who was brought in probably as somewhat replacement for Relais, sort of it in that same vein,
00:08:31
Wale Bakare
you
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't hit the ground running either so he's probably going i'm gonna have to do this myself and sort of looking also at some of the other midfielders as we do have a plentiful of of defensive minded midfielders so it's probably like i've got to sort of be the one driving forward and yeah i think probably it was probably did play a little bit into his head but now that sort of mateta is now on form walton's sort of come in and now sort of
00:09:48
Wale Bakare
Well, naturally, when you've got a manager that's doing well, it's it's totally normal that there will be clubs coming after him, particularly when they they might, especially clubs that will think because they've got more relatively more spending power they'll be hoping that will appeal to the manager and in a lot of the talks about olivier glasner either joining rb lives they've got you know just talks about suppose it's about you know spending power it's about the money that will be available to him and you know what his ambitions are and and all of that but i think it will boil down to
00:10:33
Wale Bakare
you know, what Palace's ambitions are as well. He's...

Speculation on Oliver Glasner's Future

00:10:39
Wale Bakare
I know that there have been contract talks between him and Palace.
00:10:45
Wale Bakare
How that is going, we there's been not much about it, to be honest. But remember, there were talks about him leaving before the start of the season. There were, you know, talks about teams wanting him. I think Bayern Munich came for him, I think.
00:11:00
Wale Bakare
it was mentioned in that job before. Yeah. Before Vincent Company was appointed. So it's totally expected.
00:11:12
Wale Bakare
As I said, it's going to be dependent on you know what the ambition of Palace is as well. What's the conversation between him and Parish and the hierarchy of the club?
00:11:23
Wale Bakare
What exactly are they looking to achieve? Because depending on how things finish this season, there's an FA Cup run depending on where that ends.
00:11:37
Wale Bakare
If we, example you know, I'll try to be optimistic and say there's a European european place, there will then be the questions of what What's the club? i was How much is the club going to back him you know to do well you know in in in Europe and, of course, in the Premier League?
00:11:57
Wale Bakare
Say Palace do not get a European place, but continue this vein of form and maybe lose, you know, I know a lot people who don't like this, but maybe you lose the FA Cup final and then maybe finish...
00:12:11
Wale Bakare
tent in the league and, you know, get close to those European places, the next step will then be, can we, you know, get closer or get a place in Europe next season?
00:12:22
Wale Bakare
This was the dream at the start of the season, remember, you know, especially after the end of last season. So it's it's a function of what exactly you know is is the ambition of the club. He's a top manager. He's worked with you know top clubs in Germany, in Wolfsburg, and Frankfurt. Did he win the Europa League with Frankfurt?
00:12:46
Wale Bakare
Yes.
00:12:48
Wale Bakare
I think there'd be Rangers in the... Yeah, they won the Europa League Frankfurt. so so So those are you know things that... will will will will be part we'll determine what it will be looking to do.
00:13:02
Wale Bakare
Although I know a lot of reports have also mentioned the money and the size of some of these jobs, particularly the RB Leipzig one. that That's a job that is very familiar with.
00:13:15
Wale Bakare
The Red Bull franchise have got this nice setup. They've got Jurgen Klopp in a very good role now. So they will be looking at top managers. I know that part of Klopp's job is attracting great managers to the teams under the Red Bull set up.
00:13:36
Wale Bakare
And I'm sure we we we cannot doubt the pull factor of Jurgen Klopp as well. so those Those are things that will be coming into play. But overall, it will be about you know what Palace are saying to him.
00:13:51
Wale Bakare
This is the ambition we have. This is the plan. This is how we're going to back you. and and And all of this will play a big part in him making a decision. I cannot say, to be honest, that I am confident of him staying or whether if any of this club come for him.
00:14:08
Wale Bakare
Maybe not Spurs, because I don't even know... Whether Ange will leave or not is also dependent on you know what happens with Spurs this season. If they go on and win the Europa League, for example, I'm sure they might be looking and thinking, oh, we'll give him some more time.
00:14:23
Wale Bakare
And then can is Ange really the problem at Spurs? Is he also you know the kind of business they've done? And you know it does look like there's other issues at Spurs. There's fans wanting...
00:14:35
Wale Bakare
you know, the Dani Lieve out and all of that. So I don't think he would want to go into that kind of environment in Glasner. So

Palace's Future Plans and Glasner's Decision

00:14:42
Wale Bakare
I think the Leipzig one is a more realistic, you know, one that it would might really entice him. But there's a chance for Palace, depending on the ambitions of the club. I really hope he stays anyway.
00:14:56
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:14:57
Wale Bakare
Yeah, but to be honest, I hope he doesn't leave. Remember at the time we did, think lot us favoured was Graham Potter, and now he's got job at West Ham.
00:15:10
Wale Bakare
West Ham.
00:15:12
Wale Bakare
Yeah. To be honest, it's difficult, and... It's still going to go back to what the dream is at Palace.
00:15:24
Wale Bakare
Glasner is sos it a good manager. He's a top manager working with those clubs in Germany, winning the Europa League Eintracht Frankfurt.
00:15:36
Wale Bakare
The moment know the Palace went for him, that sort of tells you what the long-term plan is. don't know whether it's for the club or whether it was... so of that Remember, there's also the angle of Dugge Friedman as well, has now left the club.
00:15:52
Wale Bakare
you know So but that's another issue on its own. but the fact that Palace went for it, Glasner et al, tells you that there's a long-term ambition there.
00:16:04
Wale Bakare
but The club's looking at you know getting closer to those European places, especially with the Premier League now. If you stay too long, in those 11, 12, 13 places for a couple of seasons.
00:16:18
Wale Bakare
It's only a matter of time before you find yourself you know becoming Wolves or Everton and you know finding yourself embroiled in relegation battles for the next four five seasons. So you really want to be you know pushing for those European places.
00:16:33
Wale Bakare
So I really hope it stays. I don't want to start thinking about you know possible replacements. It would be more like managers that wouldn't mind at Palace because of you know their performance. But is it realistic? Will they leave the teams that that you know that that they they've got or that they are in at the moment?
00:16:57
Wale Bakare
that that That's another question. and yeah In Premier League, In the Premier League, maybe, maybe I really love Bon Moetze Raula.
00:17:10
Wale Bakare
I think this is, I like his kind of football. I like the ways, you his team plays. And I think he has an understanding of, you know, that kind of football that Palace also play, you know, they try to defend well and can be very decisive when they attack and can hurt you when they attack, especially when they are the underdog in a game and a less least expected less expected to win.
00:17:41
Wale Bakare
So, and Danny Raola is one that, but I quite like you know what he does. There's managers that are good as well, but you know the teams are not doing well at the moment. To be honest, and I really did like Ange, but it's not been great for him at Tottenham at the moment. so But you're out.
00:18:01
Wale Bakare
Well... i mean
00:18:03
Wale Bakare
Well...
00:18:04
Wale Bakare
the Well, don't be don't be jewish struggle mean too sure there wouldn't be pressure at Palace as well because see, after Glassner's done this season, I'm not sure Palace fans who want to go back to you know fighting for you know to to be or Yeah.
00:18:23
Wale Bakare
or fourteens in the league
00:18:26
Wale Bakare
Not Numb Forest is doing it. Not Numb Forest is doing it. The way things are at the moment, it might be Not Numb Forest and Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League, maybe even Aston Villa.
00:18:40
Wale Bakare
So there's teams really... Yeah, there's teams really hoping to be part of those, you know, that you just never can tell, you know, what you can achieve as a team. so but But yeah, Irawala for me, that's a manager I'd won in the Premier League.
00:18:55
Wale Bakare
Outside the Premier League, I'd be sceptical about, you know, bringing a manager from outside the Premier League. He's tough enough having the experience of the Premier League. Yeah, Glaston has done great since his come on, but even he had a very terrible start this season and there were talks already about him losing his job. So,
00:19:12
Wale Bakare
I really hope he stays, but if he's leaving, hypothetically speaking, as you said, you're a manager I'd take any day, any time.
00:19:22
Wale Bakare
o Yeah, that makes sense.
00:19:28
Wale Bakare
but That makes sense.
00:19:33
Wale Bakare
it it It tells you you know what what a big global brand you know the Premier League is. A lot

Expanding Global Supporter Base

00:19:40
Wale Bakare
of Premier League teams having fans far away. know that there was a time when Palace did, although this was something I read, I'm not going to pretend like I'm some Wikipedia and with this knowledge in my head, but I know there was a time Palace did say the club had about 40 different supporters clubs around the world.
00:20:02
Wale Bakare
This was many years ago. I can only imagine that it's grown since then, especially you know with players coming into the club from different parts of the world. See, when you talk of Ghana, that makes sense to me. Jordan Ayon is you know is It's a big name in Ghana. His father, Abedi Pelle, was a big name in Ghana and Africa.
00:20:23
Wale Bakare
Oh, he's a big name and gun in Ghana and Africa. Sorry, because he's still alive. The brother... I can't remember his name. What's the brother's name? Well, something like you.
00:20:36
Wale Bakare
yeah yeah and i love brother ah ah the The brother, well, I can't remember, a but something, Dede Ayo, he is also a big name, and so John Ayo is is as one as well. So I get the Ghana part.
00:20:51
Wale Bakare
And, you know, there's other players. I know Wilfred Zara eventually played for started playing for Cote d'Avoire. So I wouldn't be surprised if there's you know fans of Palace and in Ivory Coast as well.
00:21:06
Wale Bakare
It will be tough in Nigeria where I'm from because and most Nigerians are... I know there's a lot of... I think it used to be United-Arsenal and then Chelsea when...
00:21:18
Wale Bakare
Yeah, and then Chelsea when... When Chelsea started winning, you know, Gloriantis, whole bunch of them. Then eventually some City fans as well. But i know there's a lot of Liverpool fans as well.
00:21:30
Wale Bakare
Maybe Potsmoth because Kano went to Potsmoth and Potsmoth came to Nigeria then, played with some Nigerian clubs. I know United came to Nigeria as well, maybe Arsenal at some point.
00:21:41
Wale Bakare
So... it's it's it's it's a big brand, the Premier League. And the longer Palace stay in the Premier League, the more the chance of getting noticed by somewhere someone in the corner of the world. I'm i'm surprised about the South American part, and especially with Munoz playing and doing this great you know for for the team. I'm guessing it's only a matter of time. But...
00:22:09
Wale Bakare
okay
00:22:13
Wale Bakare
and And then it's maybe more the La Liga. There's a lot of players going to the La Liga from so South America, although there's of course a lot of South American players in the Premier League as well. Some of them, the greatest, you know, Guerrero, Luis Suarez,
00:22:29
Wale Bakare
so Players that have done really great. But yeah, um'm so as I said, you it's a big brand, the Premier League. As long as Spilett remains in the league and you know continue to do well, it's only a matter of time before you know the the global support the global support you know grows larger than what it is at the moment.
00:22:48
Wale Bakare
what entertaining
00:22:50
Wale Bakare
here
00:22:51
Wale Bakare
but entertaining yeah we
00:22:54
Wale Bakare
Finally.
00:22:58
Wale Bakare
that's
