In today's reading we will complete both the Book of Nehemiah and the Old Testament! Today we will read Nehemiah Chapters 12:27-44, 13:1-27, 30-31. Today we will see Nehemiah zealous for upholding God's laws and holding everyone- leaders, priests, and people- accountable for doing the job that they were given to do. The people were to obey the teachings of the priests and support the priests by bringing in their tithes and offerings; the priests were supposed to work at the temple to teach the people and do the jobs they had been appointed; the leaders were supposed to ensure that God's laws were being upheld by the people and the priests. When Nehemiah saw that everyone was failing in their responsibilities he called them out on their shortcomings and set everyone back on the right track.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of spiritual growth and the responsibilities that we have to uphold God's laws, encourage other believers to obey God's Word, and respect the authority of our spiritual leaders when the need arises for them to point out where we are not following God's rules. We will also talk about the importance of bringing our tithes and offerings into God's churches so that we may financially support the spiritual leaders that God provides for us. We are all meant to do our part!

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back again, everybody. Today is August 9th, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching, and we are here for our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me, whether you are following along on your podcast or whether you are watching the video. If you are following along in your commitment calendar, you know what time it is.
00:00:30
Speaker
It's time to get it out because you're about to hear the Bible today.

Conclusion of Old Testament Journey

00:00:38
Speaker
Today, we are here for our final reading of the Old Testament. Wow, this has been quite the journey.
00:00:54
Speaker
We have learned so much in the Old Testament. We are very equipped for doing the good works that God has given us.

Nehemiah: A Model of Leadership

00:01:05
Speaker
But now we're going to be reading starting tomorrow about the coming of Jesus so that we can see great examples, perfect examples of how to live out our faith in God.
00:01:20
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be seeing Nehemiah in his final entry, and we are going to be seeing him as an excellent example of a servant leader.
00:01:32
Speaker
We are going to be seeing him zealous for God. When we say zealous, that means that he is very passionate. He is very motivated to do God's work and to do what is right, especially in God's eyes.
00:01:50
Speaker
He is very concerned about making sure that not only the people, but that the priests and the leaders are all following God's laws and that they are not dishonoring God, that they are upholding the integrity of the temple and that they are behaving properly and that everybody is doing the job that God gave them to do.
00:02:17
Speaker
So today we are going to be looking at Nehemiah chapters 12 and 13. They are written in a different order, the opposite order. So first we will be reading chapter 13 and then chapter 12.
00:02:33
Speaker
As you already know, this version of the Bible is written chronologically.

Upholding the Sabbath and Community Principles

00:02:37
Speaker
And so we are following it along and with chapter 13 first, and it is entitled Closing the Gates.
00:02:50
Speaker
Now there was a priest who had been in charge of the storerooms, and these were at the worship house. But he was a friend of Tobiah's. He had given Tobiah a big room there.
00:03:03
Speaker
I wasn't in Jerusalem at that time. I had gone back to Babylon, and I had gone back to serve the king. Remember that Nehemiah was a cupbearer for the king.
00:03:16
Speaker
Later, asked the king if I could come back to Jerusalem. And that is when I learned about Tobias' room at the worship house. I was very unhappy about this, and I threw Tobias' things out of the room.
00:03:34
Speaker
I found out something else. People were supposed to give the priests and singers food. The priests and singers had to go back home because the people weren't giving it.
00:03:48
Speaker
The priests and singers had to go back to work in their fields. They couldn't serve God at the worship house. So I called the leaders together.
00:03:59
Speaker
Why do you forget about the worship house? I asked. Then I saw people working on the worship day. Our Big Bible tells us that they were treading the wine press.
00:04:14
Speaker
And they were also bringing food into Jerusalem to sell. They were loading grain on donkeys. They brought in grain, wine, grapes, figs, and other food.
00:04:30
Speaker
But I told them not to sell food on that day.
00:04:36
Speaker
Other men brought in fish and other things, and they sold these on the worship day. I said, what are you doing? You're making the worship day seem like nothing.
00:04:48
Speaker
Your families from long ago did the same thing. And that brought us the trouble that we are having now. You're going to make God angry at us again.
00:05:00
Speaker
So I gave an order and the city gates were to be closed at on the worship day. They would close in the evening and they would not open until the worship day was over.
00:05:13
Speaker
I put some of my men at the gates. Then nothing could be brought in on the worship day. Sometimes seller would spend the night outside the gate.
00:05:24
Speaker
But I said, why spend the night here? Don't do it again. And if you do, i will come and get you. And they never came on the worship day again.
00:05:37
Speaker
Remember me for doing this, God. Be kind to me because your love is great.
00:05:44
Speaker
I also saw men from Judah marry women from other lands. Half of the children didn't even know the language of Judah. I told these men they were wrong.
00:05:56
Speaker
I made them make a promise that they wouldn't let their children marry people from other lands. I said, isn't that how Solomon sinned? There was no other king like him.
00:06:10
Speaker
God loved him. But even Solomon sinned. The women he married led him into sin. And they were from other lands too.
00:06:22
Speaker
do you have to do this? You are not obeying God if you marry women from other lands. So I made priests get rid of everything that didn't please God.

Dedication of Jerusalem's Wall

00:06:35
Speaker
And I gave each priest a job to do. I made sure that people knew when to bring their gifts.
00:06:43
Speaker
Remember me and be kind to me, my God.
00:06:49
Speaker
Chapter 12, and then some of 13. Singers on the Wall.
00:06:57
Speaker
Now the day came to give the city wall of Jerusalem to God. We call that dedicating it. It was time to say that God was in charge of it.
00:07:09
Speaker
It belonged to him. So people from the family group of Levi came to help. They led songs to give thanks to God. They played music with cymbals, harps, and lyres.
00:07:24
Speaker
The singers came together too. They had built towns for themselves around Jerusalem. I told Judah's leaders to go on top of the wall, and I chose two big groups of singers to give thanks.
00:07:40
Speaker
One group went to the top of the wall to the right, and half of the leaders followed them. Ezra led them. They marched to the fountain gate and they went up the steps of David's city.
00:07:54
Speaker
And then they went to the water gate. The next group of singers went the other way and I followed them on the top of the wall. And half of the people followed too.
00:08:06
Speaker
We went past the oven's tower to the wide wall. We went over the fish gate and the hundred tower.
00:08:17
Speaker
We went to the sheep gate and we stopped at the guard gate. And the two groups of singers gave thanks. Then they went to the worship house and I went too.
00:08:30
Speaker
Half of the leaders went, the priests went, and they took their horns and the singers sang. That day, many gifts were given to God.
00:08:44
Speaker
And that's because God had made the people very happy. The women and children showed their joy too.
00:08:54
Speaker
The happy sound could be heard far away. Everyone brought their gifts of grain, wine, and oil. And the gifts were put in the storerooms.
00:09:07
Speaker
We chose men to be in charge of the storerooms. And these were men that we could trust.
00:09:14
Speaker
Remember me, God. Don't forget what I've done for your worship house.
00:09:20
Speaker
Then Moses' law book was read out loud. All the people could hear it. And they did what it said.
00:09:31
Speaker
And that is the end of the Old Testament. And the end of our reading today.

Supporting Spiritual Leaders

00:09:40
Speaker
Wow. Such a big accomplishment for us, for Nehemiah, for the people. there was There has been so much growth, so much learning.
00:09:54
Speaker
We have learned so much. Nehemiah learned a lot too. He read the book of of the of God and he learned what was right.
00:10:05
Speaker
that's exactly what we've been doing this year too. We've been reading God's word and learning about what is right and what is wrong. And it's very important, just like Nehemiah did, that we stand up for what is right and that we talk to people about doing what is right when we see that God's laws are not being upheld.
00:10:28
Speaker
It's not okay to just let the bad things be done, to let people continue in sin. We know that we are in the world and that not everyone is a believer.
00:10:41
Speaker
So in this case, when they were talking about Jerusalem and and the country of Israel, in this country, this country was God's country. And so everybody was expected to obey God because this country was set apart special for God.
00:10:58
Speaker
We are not set aside as a special country for God. no matter which country we live in anymore, unless we are living in Israel. So we're not going to be able to necessarily um convince other people that they are committing laws ah they're committing wrongs against God because they may not care.
00:11:21
Speaker
They don't believe in God. They don't follow him. But for those of us who do follow God, It's important that we encourage one another, that we are good examples of leadership, that we are good examples of following God's word.
00:11:37
Speaker
and that we are able to build up our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ so that together we can be zealous for God. We can do the things that God sees are right and not the things that God sees that are wrong.

Encouragement and Looking Ahead

00:11:54
Speaker
God's ways are higher than our ways. He is always right and just and fair. And Jesus is going to show us how to live that way even more as we go through and read the old the New Testament.
00:12:08
Speaker
But we have some great examples in Nehemiah and in some of the other people that we've read about this year too so far, such as Moses. Moses was very humble and he worked hard to to help the people to do what was right.
00:12:26
Speaker
So we have some great role models to look up to, to try and do what is right, and to stand up for God in our lives. God places us in places just for times is like that.
00:12:40
Speaker
God wants us to stand up for people who can't stand up for themselves. He wants us to look out for other people. He wants us to tell the truth.
00:12:52
Speaker
He wants us to be respectful of our parents and to obey them. He wants us to bring our tithe into the church. And it's very important that we do that because we see here that when the people did not bring their tithe and their food, the people who were serving God couldn't do their job because they had to go out and provide for themselves.
00:13:15
Speaker
Our ministry workers, our pastors, they are doing God's work. And so it's very important when we bring our tithe into ministry,
00:13:26
Speaker
the church because this is supporting people who are meant to be our leaders our spiritual leaders and they have been appointed and it's important that we do what we are told by taking care of them by bringing in the tithe It's not just to give back to God.
00:13:47
Speaker
God isn't taking that money and spending it and going shopping. God uses that money to support the people who are doing his work for him, who are leading us, who are teaching us.
00:13:59
Speaker
who are there for us every week. It helps to pay the mortgage or the rent on the church, the utilities for the land. It helps to buy materials and Bibles.
00:14:12
Speaker
It helps to support missionaries that are out in the world trying to reach people for God. There are so many ways that God uses the tithe that we bring in. And it's not good to forget about that because we need to remember that we are supporting God in this. We are supporting God's ministries.
00:14:34
Speaker
And God can do it without our support, but that is not what we are called to do. We are meant to help one another and to support one another. And part of the way that we do that is by the tithe.
00:14:47
Speaker
And we are meant to honor our leaders and to obey their teachings when they type when they teach us what is right in God's eyes. And that if they see us doing something that is not in alignment with God's rules, then they will sometimes have to go to the people in the church.
00:15:06
Speaker
And we need to respect their authority and be able to honor what they are telling us and not to simply be offended. Because they are trying to do their job to stand up like what Nehemiah was doing.
00:15:19
Speaker
To defend God's rules. And to help us be the body of Christ that God has designed us to be. So that we can be good examples in the world.
00:15:31
Speaker
And be lights in the world for him. And point people to God. So I hope that you feel that the Old Testament has lit your light, that you have learned a lot about how to make God the most important one, how to observe the Sabbath and to keep it holy and to follow god's all of God's commandments that he has given us.
00:15:55
Speaker
We will be learning that Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. He gave his life as a sacrifice so that we wouldn't have to have the day of atonement.
00:16:09
Speaker
Jesus himself will become, in our reading, we already we already know that in the past he has, become our sacrifice so that our sins are paid for, so that we can be reconciled to God.
00:16:24
Speaker
Now we just need to grow. And it's a great thing to do. We don't want to just stay at the same age, the same maturity level.
00:16:35
Speaker
We want to grow and and become wise in God's ways. So I will be looking forward to reading the New Testament with you. I'm so glad that you're joining me on this incredible journey as we go through the entire Bible in chronological order, reading this day-by-day kids Bible.
00:16:55
Speaker
And I'm looking forward to the company that I have on this journey.
