In today's reading we will read Zechariah Chapters 9:9-17, and 10:4-12. We will prophesy concerning the Messiah- that He will come from the tribe of Judah, that He is right. That He saves us. He is kind and good. He will ride on a colt. He will bring peace to the nations, over all the earth! God's promise of salvation will set us FREE! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the fact that only Jesus fulfilled all of the prophesies given to us in the Old Covenant concerning the Messiah. Jesus saves us. What does He save us from? The consequence of sin- spiritual death, separation from God forever. Why did God do this? He tells us He did this because He cares for us! God loves us! God's love for us never ends! He loves us so much that He sent His Son to be the Savior of the whole world! Let us be witnesses of God's love for us and spread the word about God's Word- Jesus is our salvation! He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life! Jesus saves us!

Prophecies About Jesus

00:01:11
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading from the book of Zechariah chapters 9 and 10.
00:01:17
Speaker
And today we are going to be reading about prophecy about Jesus. Why are these prophecies so important? We've been reading and learning that God doesn't do anything without telling us first, which I just think is incredible.
00:01:32
Speaker
That is just so amazing. And God tells us that he does this so that we will know that it was him who did these things. We can't give credit to anybody else because God said that they would happen many hundreds of years before these things ever occurred.
00:01:51
Speaker
And why is it important to know about specifically these prophecies about Jesus? It's so that we could identify him as being the true Messiah. There were many people who would claim to be the Messiah, and yet they did not fulfill these prophecies written about in Jeremiah.
00:02:10
Speaker
These prophecies are a way of of giving us information the knowledge about him so that we would be able to have discernment as we look and see who is the real Messiah.
00:02:25
Speaker
Jesus told us that he is the way, he is the truth, and he is the life. And all who come to him shall not perish but have everlasting life. And these are exactly what we are going to be seeing that Zechariah was given the message to bring us today.

Jesus' Fulfillment of Prophecies

00:02:43
Speaker
If you have ah read the story, what we might call in Christianity, the Christmas story, you know that when Jesus came into Bethlehem, he came riding on a donkey, or not to Bethlehem, to Judah.
00:02:57
Speaker
Sorry about that. He was born in Bethlehem, but when he entered into Jerusalem, he came riding on a donkey. which, and ah ah not only that, but a baby one, a cult.
00:03:09
Speaker
So we are going to be seeing that he is that he will be doing that. This is the prophecy where Jeremiah wrote that this is going to be happening. this These verses are also important because you and i my brothers and sisters, we have Jewish brethren, brothers and sisters who do not yet know Jesus as their Messiah.
00:03:32
Speaker
So it's important that we point out these verses to those whom God puts into our path to help lead them to Jesus. They have not accepted him as the Messiah. And rather than condemning them for that, we need to be the light for them in this world.
00:03:51
Speaker
We need to be the people that God puts in their path to lead them to him. And these are the some of the verses that we can point to to show because they are awaiting for the Messiah.
00:04:04
Speaker
We can point to these verses as showing that this is how God would let us know that this person, Jesus, is the true Messiah and that he has indeed come.

God's Promise of Salvation

00:04:16
Speaker
God promises in these verses to bring salvation, to bring freedom, to save. And this is exactly what Jesus has done. He has brought us salvation from our sins.
00:04:28
Speaker
He has saved us from spiritual death. And he has saved us from what our big Bible calls the waterless pit, which is another which is a description of what we would call hell.
00:04:43
Speaker
So these verses are very important for us to know and to understand because we are to always give a reason for the hope that is in us. And these are part of the reasons why we have hope in Jesus is because he fulfilled these very prophecies that we're going to be reading about today.
00:05:02
Speaker
Jesus told his disciples that he was fulfilling prophecy and he quoted these verses to them when he was explaining it to them. And in the book of Matthew, for instance, is the ah disciples note that they did not understand these things at first when Jesus told them.
00:05:21
Speaker
But later on, they did. And they were their eyes were opened. So let us pray for discernment, for God to open our eyes and to open our ears, that we may have eyes to see and ears to hear about the
00:05:38
Speaker
prophecies that pertain to Jesus today.
00:05:45
Speaker
We are going to be looking at Zechariah chapters 9 and 10.

Zechariah's Detailed Reading

00:05:52
Speaker
In chapter 9, it's entitled, God's Arrow.
00:05:57
Speaker
Zechariah wrote these words. Show your joy, Jerusalem. See, your king is coming to you. He is right.
00:06:08
Speaker
He saves you. He is kind and good. He rides on a donkey. It's a colt. A donkey's baby.
00:06:21
Speaker
He will break the bow and arrow. He will send peace to the nations. He will rule from one sea to another. He will rule over all the earth.
00:06:35
Speaker
I have made a special promise to you. I will set you free. i will give you two times as much as you had before.
00:06:48
Speaker
I will wake up the people of my city, Zion. Then God will appear over them. God's arrow will flash like lightning.
00:06:59
Speaker
God will blow the war horn. He will march out in storms in the south. God's people will tear down the enemies. Then God will save his people.
00:07:14
Speaker
They will shine in his land like shiny stones in a crown. They will be beautiful. Grain and new wine will make them live and grow.
00:07:29
Speaker
Zechariah chapter 10, coming back. Here God is speaking to us. The stone that holds the building up will come from Judah.
00:07:41
Speaker
The peg that holds the tent up will come from him. The war bow comes from him. Every ruler comes from him.
00:07:52
Speaker
God is with them. They will fight their enemies. I will make Judah strong. I will save my people. I will bring them back because I care for them.
00:08:08
Speaker
It will be like I never turned away from them. I am the Lord their God. I will answer them. They will be strong.
00:08:20
Speaker
Their hearts will be glad. Their children will be happy to see it. Their hearts will show their joy in God. I will bring them in.
00:08:32
Speaker
I will save them. There will be as many of them as before. I may send them here and there in the nations. But even far away, they will remember me.
00:08:46
Speaker
They will live. Their children will live. And they will come back. I will bring them back from Egypt. I will bring them from the north.
00:08:59
Speaker
I will bring them in. There won't be enough room for them. I will make them strong. They will walk in my name, says God.
00:09:13
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Daily Application of God's Message

00:09:19
Speaker
Did you notice one sentence that God said several times today in between those two chapters? He said, he saves you. He saves us.
00:09:32
Speaker
God said it first in Zechariah chapter nine.
00:09:38
Speaker
He said it again. In Zechariah chapter 9, two times there, and this is just in our version. Then in chapter 10, he said he would make Judah strong and he would save his people.
00:09:54
Speaker
That's a third time.
00:09:57
Speaker
And again, in Zechariah chapter 10, he said, I will call for them. I will bring them in. I will save them.
00:10:09
Speaker
So what is our daily application today? That's right. God saves us.
00:10:19
Speaker
I was thinking today that I hope that one of the things that you may be learning from this event is how to read the Bible when you read it, how to ask God to show you what your daily application is or what message he wants you to to know about.
00:10:34
Speaker
And, um, because he he makes it clear. ah This version has been set into like a devotional style where there are daily readings and it is is all God's word.
00:10:50
Speaker
But each day, each piece, each, always has daily application. No matter where it is cut off, you can see a central theme of what is going on, whether it is in a behavior that where we can see what to do or what not to do by what is done in that day's reading.
00:11:10
Speaker
And he and by sometimes we see God's attributes. We see a message that he is giving us of what he will do or what he is doing. And so i I encourage you that when you go about and read your big Bible, and I hope you're always hungry for more of God's word, that ah that you learn a little bit about how to understand the messages that God is giving us in for each day to see that every day has application.
00:11:41
Speaker
So our daily application today is that God saves us. We could go on and on about all the many ways that that that Jesus fulfilled these prophecies today.
00:11:54
Speaker
I was looking at Matthew chapter 24, which we read, ah i think it was last week when Jesus was telling us about the end times and these verses,
00:12:06
Speaker
are what Jesus was also referring

Prophecies and Jesus' Second Coming

00:12:10
Speaker
to. We read ah some of those applications or some of those references when we were reading, um think it was, oh, I can't remember. Maybe it was Ezra or Haggai.
00:12:26
Speaker
But here we we can see that where God says, for instance,
00:12:38
Speaker
that God will appear over them in chapter nine. God's arrow will flash like lightning and God will blow the war horn. He will march out in storms in the south and God's people will tear down the enemies.
00:12:50
Speaker
Then God will save his people. So this is referring to when we see that God will appear over them and God's arrow will flash like lightning and God will blow the war horn.
00:13:02
Speaker
That is where it is referenced in Matthew 24 as well, where Jesus is is telling the disciples about what is to come when they asked him, when will these things happen?
00:13:15
Speaker
And Jesus said that to not be, um, deceived by false messiahs when people said he's in the inner room he is over here look he is in here he says that is not going to be the case he says when i when the son of man comes again so lightning can be seen from the east to the west so will the son of man come shining on the clouds and that you will be able to see him and this is what this is where it is referenced as well that this is another pointing to that and so uh
00:13:51
Speaker
Just every single bit of of this is is referenced and and God makes clear. And he always says things more than once. It's so amazing ah to me. It's so gracious that God gives us this information, not just once, but he wants us to know that these things are valid. They are important.
00:14:10
Speaker
They are not simply words that are being spoken and and to be brushed aside. Everything God says has meaning and is important. God doesn't waste time with trivial chit-chat.
00:14:23
Speaker
Every message he gives us is very important.
00:14:29
Speaker
We saw that Jesus would come. He is right. Jesus is right. He is the way. He is the truth.
00:14:41
Speaker
If we are right, then that is truth. Jesus is right. He is the truth and he is the way. He is not way. He is not one of many ways.
00:14:52
Speaker
Jesus says that narrow is the gate and narrow is the way and that we are to follow him. We are to take the narrow gate.
00:15:05
Speaker
It says that he will send peace to the nations. In our big version, it says he will speak shalom to the nations. Jesus brings a shalom. We we'd translate that as simply being peace. But if you've been with this event for a little while, then you may remember, and I hope you do, that shalom is has a much deeper meaning.
00:15:26
Speaker
It is not simply a peace. And it's not, it's even more than just like an inner peace, which transcends all understanding. But it is wholeness. Jesus makes us whole.
00:15:37
Speaker
He sends us the Holy Spirit after he left, after he counted up the days of Shavuot, and we had that that day ah where we had the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and we are one with him.
00:15:53
Speaker
We are one with God. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, who only speaks what he hears Jesus tell him, and Jesus only says what the Father tells him.
00:16:06
Speaker
So it's this chain where it starts with God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, us. And we are made complete in him. He will speak wellness. He will speak wholeness, shalom, peace, and a peace that transcends all understanding.
00:16:26
Speaker
Those who do not have it cannot understand it
00:16:32
Speaker
He will give us two times as much as we had before. I was trying to understand this. And what keeps coming to mind is that in the beginning, we had only God.
00:16:43
Speaker
Now we will have God, Jesus, and his Holy Spirit with us.
00:16:50
Speaker
And there could be additional translation for that as well. But that's what keeps coming to mind this morning for me as I go through this. Over and over, God says today that he will save his people.
00:17:02
Speaker
We are saved from the consequence of death for sin, for all have fallen short of the glory of God and the wages, the the earnings for sin is death.
00:17:15
Speaker
In our big Bible, it says ah that he will save us from the waterless pit. And that is what we would also call the the burning lakes or have the fires of hell.

Understanding God's Salvation

00:17:27
Speaker
And more than that, hell is eternal separation from God. This will save us from being separated from God. Jesus saves us from separation and he makes us whole.
00:17:43
Speaker
Isn't that wonderful? There are so many layers of understanding with how God saves us. It's not just as simple as saying, oh, he saves us from our sins. He does, but there is so much greater understanding.
00:17:59
Speaker
God transforms us with a renewing of our mind. So he saves us from repeating and and just living in a constant state of of wrong thinking.
00:18:13
Speaker
And God says that we will shine in his land like shiny stones in a crown. They will be beautiful. God makes us beautiful.
00:18:26
Speaker
He makes us beautiful from the inside out. I think it may have been Paul that said, what comes out of the mouth is the overflow of the heart. So God changes our heart and then we speak and we are beautiful.
00:18:42
Speaker
We are beautiful from the inside out.
00:18:49
Speaker
The stone that holds the building up will come from Judah. This was important. So unless the Messiah were to come from the tribe of Judah, he would not be the Messiah.
00:19:04
Speaker
The peg that holds the tent up comes from him. That's another way of saying that. Remember yesterday we read in the Psalms that he would be the cornerstone that was rejected.
00:19:16
Speaker
He is the stone that holds everything up. He is our rock of salvation. You see where we get all of these things? It's from Zechariah and from the psalm that we read yesterday.
00:19:31
Speaker
says, God is with us. God is with us. One of Jesus's names is Emmanuel, means God with us. And he is with us because he is inside with us. in our he He dwells with us. He says, I will never leave you or forsake you.
00:19:48
Speaker
We have been made whole, given shalom. We have God. We have Jesus. We have the Holy Spirit. And they are in with us. God is with us.
00:20:00
Speaker
You carry God's kingdom with you. Everybody. We are a mighty force on the earth. And God says that
00:20:11
Speaker
they will We will fight our enemies. Our battle is not one of flesh and of the of the physical world, but it is a spiritual battle. And God has won that battle for us.
00:20:23
Speaker
We fight that battle every day, and God wins. He will never give us more than what we can bear, even though he told us that before we had the Holy Spirit. How much more so now that we have Jesus and the Holy Spirit with us.
00:20:40
Speaker
We are on the winning team. We need to be sure that as Jesus cautioned that we stand firm to the end. Remember these things. God is with us. He has saved us.

Reconciliation and God's Plans

00:20:55
Speaker
In the end here today, um God is speaking about the return of his Jewish people who have not yet accepted Jesus as the Messiah.
00:21:07
Speaker
God said that I may send them here and there in the nations, but even far away they will remember me and they will live, their children will live. We have a lot of what we would call anti-Semitic behavior going on.
00:21:20
Speaker
Our enemy, the adversary, wants people to be accusing. God's chosen people, the Israelites. He wants us to be hateful of them. He wants to destroy them.
00:21:34
Speaker
And it is very important that we not fall into that trap and say, well, they rejected the savior. They are no longer God's chosen people. That is accusation.
00:21:47
Speaker
Anytime we hear the accuser, that is Satan. God does not accuse. Jesus saves. We are no longer accused.
00:21:58
Speaker
We are innocent before God's eyes because Jesus has paid the price for our sins. So when we find ourselves or we find others who are speaking,
00:22:10
Speaker
ah anti-Jewish behavior or thoughts or accusations. We need to remember that it is our adversary who is the accuser and that we need to bring them God's message of love and forgiveness because God calls us to be ministers of reconciliation.
00:22:28
Speaker
God does not call us to be the adversary. God does not call us to be the accusers of people. He calls us to reconcile, to bring others to God.
00:22:38
Speaker
That is why we are the light of the world. That is why we are meant to shine and we are beautiful inside and out. We are not meant to accuse. That is the adversary's job.
00:22:50
Speaker
And he doesn't need anyone to help him with that. He can handle that all on his own. You and I, we are called to be ministers of reconciliation. So our job is to bring is to to speak to people, to help bring them back to God so that they may know that they are one with him as well.
00:23:09
Speaker
God says that he will bring his people back. He will show himself to them. And there won't be enough room for them. And he will make them strong. And they will walk in his name.
00:23:20
Speaker
So remember, they are not ah to be written off. They are still God's chosen people. God's temple will still be built again in Jerusalem.
00:23:31
Speaker
And it is very important that we witness, we be witnesses for God to our Jewish brethren.
00:23:42
Speaker
And they too will walk in his name.
00:23:46
Speaker
Okay, well that is all we have for today.

Sharing the Message of Salvation

00:23:49
Speaker
God saves everybody. He wants everybody to come to him. He does not desire for anybody to die, but for everybody to have everlasting life with him. And that is why he sent us his son.
00:24:01
Speaker
God says he cares for us. He saves us. He saves our Jewish brethren. He saved us and he is the salvation of the world.
00:24:13
Speaker
So it is our responsibility to share this message of Shalom and of God's love with everybody. And this event is part of the way that I follow that command and to be a witness for God in this world.
00:24:27
Speaker
So I would appreciate when you're finished listening or watching, if you would click that follow or subscribe or light button, which we know looks like a thumbs up or it might look like a light.
00:24:40
Speaker
I give you eyes to see. It is a light button. And we are drawing people to God so that they can hear God's word. Because together we are helping to spread the word about reading God's word so that all may know his truth.
00:24:56
Speaker
To know that Jesus is the truth, the life, and the way. So thank you for joining me here today. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your July 28th, wherever you are.
00:25:08
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again for tomorrow's daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley. Have a great day.
